If you lived on a park in Amsterdam like I do, you would know that it is no exaggeration to state that in the summer, Amsterdam parks are the most intensely used stretches of green in all the world. As soon as the sun comes out, we head to the park. Women immediately strip down to their underwear; men wear nothing more than shorts, revealing milky white bellies with indifference if not pride. Everybody drinks rosé – which is never consumed anywhere but in a park. And miraculously, like clockwork, an entire army of bongo drummers comes out of the bush to bang out their mind-numbingly tedious beat from dusk till dawn. Despite all this, the parks are a hugely attractive place to be. Some, like the Amstelpark, offer train and boat rides for kids; others have fantastic restaurants, open-air theatres or music stages with free concerts all summer long. Still more have free public swimming lakes and paddling pools, fantastic petting farms like goat farm Ridammerhoeve in the park that is so big we call it a forest (Amsterdamse Bos). If you spend only one or two days in the city, be sure not to miss the first and foremost of the Amsterdam parks, the Vondelpark. Envisaged in 1864 – and thus 150 years old this year – as a park with an edifying and social purpose, the funds raised from citizens in an early form of crowdfunding, it grew to be the most urban of all European parks. The large lawn that is now home to several boot-camp groups once had cows grazing on it and a dairy farm. The population of ring-necked parakeets have been around since 1865 and were at one time (1880) so numerous that hunters were allowed to shoot them in great numbers. WET-LOOK JEANS BOLT FROM THE BLUE Amsterdam’s picturesque canals reveal their dark secrets in Lonely Graves, the Amsterdam-set thriller that promises to be this city’s answer to all that Scandinavian noir. The title of the novel by writing duo Britta Bolt refers to a real-life Amsterdam organisation that exists to ensure that anonymous corpses found within the city limits are properly mourned, and the action begins when just such a body is fished out of the stately Prinsengracht. The Britta Bolt writing partnership was born when human-rights lawyer Britta Böhler felt compelled to turn her past experiences into a novel. Amsterdam-based Rodney Bolt dreamed of doing the same. Soon afterwards, they teamed up to write a crime series that’s already been optioned by a UK television production company. www.mulhollandbooks.co.uk

As if his contribution to international levels of felicity and call-centre hold music weren’t enough, ‘Happy’ composer Pharrell Williams can now add helming a sustainable fashion line to his considerable accomplishments, thanks to a new collaboration with Amsterdam-based denim brand G-Star RAW. The singer, producer and songwriter has lent his support to RAW For The Oceans, an initiative that recycles plastic bottles found in the sea into pairs of jeans. The collection, available worldwide from 15 August, is made from a blend of materials – among them recycled plastic PET taken from the oceans, and cotton – that’s been developed by Bionic Yarn, a sustainable textiles firm of which Williams is creative director. Next time you’re passing through Schiphol, take a closer look at that table of business travellers staring intently at their smartphones. That beaded brow may have little to do with deadlines and sales targets, and everything to do with the airport’s bike-powered phone-charging stations, which can fully revive a juiced-out device with just half an hour of pedalling. The WeBike, which surely puts Amsterdam’s airport in the fast lane when it comes to renewable energy, is the brainchild of a Belgian company called WeWatt, whose founders were concerned about our increasingly sedentary lifestyles. BRICK OF ALL RIGHT Anyone who’s ever looked at the masterpiece ‘Girl With A Pearl Earring’ and wondered what that painting’s enigmatic subject would look like recreated in LEGO® bricks need look no further than Amsterdam Expo this summer. The exhibition The Art of the Brick consists of 75 works of art painstakingly crafted from more than a million LEGO® bricks by the American artist Nathan Sawaya. Many of the works are human figures (the keen-eyed will recognise the yellow sculpture on the exhibition’s poster from a recent Lady Gaga video) but there’s also a six-metre T-Rex skeleton constructed from over 80,000 bricks and another plastic pastiche of a well-known landscape, the original of which can be found in the Van Gogh Museum.



COINING IT IN Amsterdam has always been a pioneering centre for financial trade (the first stock exchange started here long before Wall Street) so it makes sense that the city should be an early adopter of the ATM for Bitcoin, the peer-to-peer payment system that’s been growing in popularity. Located in the courtyard next to the Hofje van Wijs café on Zeedijk, the machine distributes the digital currency via QR code, upon presentation of equivalent cash. As there’s a cap on the ‘minting’ of the currency, the only way to acquire Bitcoin is to buy it from somebody else, and it’s the brokering of this transaction that the ATM is facilitating. Its owners are obviously (ahem) banking that many of Amsterdam’s tourists will want to convert holiday Euros into Bitcoin at the end of their trip.



An Amsterdam tattoo artist is making a name for himself by going freestyle on the skin of his (willing!) customers. South African-born Jay Freestyle, who operates from a studio in the Red Light District, says that his clients often instruct him to do as he pleases. ‘Give me a piece of your skin, and I will give you a part of my soul,’ says Jay. DE PARADE Every summer, the small but perfectly formed Martin Luther Kingpark is ringfenced and strewn with party lights in honour of De Parade, a travelling theatre festival with a spontaneous, ragtag vibe and old-school carnival appeal. Locals descend en masse to imbibe litres of rosé, hang out under a canopy of trees, feast from an array of food trucks and catch a smorgasbord of quirky, small-scale performances. Those that are ‘language no problem’ are clearly signposted, with plenty of dance, music, magic and more (the Silent Disco is always a hilarious crowd-pleaser). From hippy camp to public employment programme and from gay cruising zone to alfresco theatre, Amsterdam’s 30 municipal parks are a vital part of the city. text Matt Farquharson highlights Danitscha van Zijverden

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER

here’s the stately Vondelpark with its summer programme of open-air theatre and the small-but-perfectly-formed Sarphatipark, an oasis of calm in the bustling, multicultural De Pijp neighbourhood. Then there’s the former gasworks-turned-cultural hotspot, Westerpark – not to mention the city’s oldest park, Wertheimpark, ‘gifted’ to the people of Amsterdam by Napoleon at their own expense in 1812. And of course there are the lesser-known green spaces, like the Siegerpark, a paradise for bees sandwiched between Sloterweg and the A4 motorway. In total there are some 30 municipal parks in Amsterdam today, and collectively they occupy 12 per cent of the densely populated city’s precious surface area. When the sun shines, they’re full of Amsterdammers staying out for the summer. VONDEL MEMORIES ‘When I first came to Amsterdam in the 1970s, Vondelpark was the domain of hippies, backpackers and those who just wanted to camp for free,’ says Richard Tulloch, Australian travel writer and creator of kids’ TV show Bananas in Pyjamas. ‘There was this Turkish drummer who knew only one rhythm and I’d take my

yellow fiddle and jam along with other wannabe Bob Dylans.’ Then, the park was a place where ‘everything was possible and almost everything was allowed’, he says. KLM even advertised flights to the Netherlands from the US with the slogan ‘Fly KLM, sleep in the Vondelpark’. But in 1975, the city stopped the camping because of the mountain of rubbish that was developing, and the hippies were cleared out. ‘The parks have had to become more regulated since those happy hippy days,’ says Tulloch. ‘Sunbathing is allowed, but nudity is not.’ But Vondelpark wasn’t always so prudish. ‘The Rose Garden was a notorious gay beat, where people strolled around with colour-coded handkerchiefs hanging from their back pockets. Which handkerchief you displayed and which pocket you dangled it from gave other strollers the clue to the sort of adventure you were up for,’ Tulloch recalls. A 2008 clampdown by police has largely curtailed such al-fresco assignations, despite the efforts of Amsterdam Alderman Paul van Grieken. BRANCHING OUT ‘It started as an initiative of residents from the city and it’s still a park of the

VONDELPARK The busiest and most famous of Amsterdam’s parks, Vondelpark has an abundance of ponds, lawns, gardens and winding footpaths that encourage visitors to explore – when they’re not imbibing at one of the several laid-back café terraces, that is. Of the latter, Vondelpark3 (www. unlimitedlabel.com), housed in the majestic former film museum, is one of the best, and perfect for people-watching. At the other end of the park you’ll find the more rustic Vondeltuin, conveniently located next to an enclosed playground so adults can relax while kids entertain themselves (www. devondeltuin.nl). Just outside the park’s boundaries is Ron’s Gastrobar, run by top chef Ron Blaauw who surrendered his Michelin star in order to create a more affordable menu (Sophialaan 55, www. rongastrobar.nl). At the other end of the culinary scale (and back inside the park) is the Kinderkookkafé, where kids do everything – from cooking to cleaning up (www.kinderkookkafe.nl). Also great for the wee ones – and also nearby – is the Electric Tram Museum, which offers rides on an oldfashioned tram that winds its way down to the Amsterdamse Bos (Amstelveenseweg 264, www.museum tramlijn.org).

PARK FRANKENDAEL Built as a manorial estate during the Golden Age to accommodate rich Amsterdammers escaping summer in the city, Park Frankendael is now a public park and a national monument. Inside, find Huize Frankendael, which houses Restaurant Merkelbach, with a beautiful garden and a top-flight menu (www.huizefrankendael. nl). Restaurant De Kas, meanwhile, is housed inside a historic greenhouse and serves the freshest food – much of it harvested from the on-site kitchen garden (www.restaurantdekas.nl). 

13 residents,’ says councillor Paul Slettenhaar of Vondelpark. ‘We are very proud that the most famous park in the Netherlands has been here for 150 years.’ Many of Amsterdam’s greatest achievements have been led by its citizens. Entrepreneurial merchants created the Canal Belt, and the explosion of green spaces that began in the mid-1800s was largely the work of Amsterdammers themselves. In 1864, partly inspired by New York’s Central Park, a group of wealthy Amsterdammers bought a plot of marshy land on what was then the outskirts of the city. It grew over the coming years, as more land was bought. The architect, Jan David Zocher, took his inspiration from the English landscape garden tradition, which did away with Versailles-style symmetry and pomp, in favour of a little pastoral idyll in the city: gentle undulations, wild flowers and lakes. It is, says Slettenhaar, a ‘relaxed park where you can lay in the sun, skate, jog or have a drink in a café. And in the summer there are performances in the open-air theatre.’

At that theatre, you’re as likely to see the Dutch National Opera Society singing their hearts out, as hear a Mozart symphony or catch touring bands from across the world (www.openluchttheater.nl). LIVE ATTRACTIONS But Vondelpark doesn’t have a monopoly on open-air amusement. Amsterdam is a city that likes its entertainment outdoors, and when the sun shines, barbecuers, picnickers, music-makers, idlers and sports enthusiasts quickly occupy every patch of green. And it is perhaps the live entertainment that makes these places special. From the carnivalesque theatre festival De Parade in the Martin Luther Kingpark to the outrageous glam of Milkshake Festival in Westerpark or hip hop and world music events in Oosterpark, the summer months are when the parks come alive. Even the smaller plots like Beatrixpark or little green squares like Frederiksplein have been known to see impromptu performances by eager strummers and drummers.

This hidden park is a lot less busy than the heavyweights, and may just be the greenest of them all. There’s the outdoor swimming pool Flevoparkbad (Zeeburgerdijk 630, www.flevoparkbad. com) to cool off in, and the distillery ’t Nieuwe Diep where you can sample the house-made genevers and grain wine on the sunny terrace by a lake (Flevopark 13, www.nwediep.nl). 

OOSTERPARK Cosily crowded on sunny days and surrounded by bars and restaurants, Oosterpark is worth leaving the Canal Ring for. On the east side of the park, Pata Negra serves superlative tapas (www.pata-negra.nl) or if slabs of meat and beer is more your thing, be sure to visit De Biertuin, where you can choose from some 40 specialty brews (www. debiertuin.nl). Sip coctails at Henry’s Bar (www.henrysbar. nl), join the after-work crowd at Bar Bukowski (www.barbukowski.nl) on the south-west corner or go dining and dancing in the old Hotel Arena – an old girls’ orphanage-turnedhotel and Paradiso-like club – on the north-west side. Also check out the Tropenmuseum, with its provocative exhibitions on non-Western cultures (Linneausstraat 2, www.tropenmuseum.nl). 

WESTERPARK Located on the site of a former gasworks, Westerpark is a creative hotspot, whose characteristic red-brick buildings now house restaurants, galleries, bars and a cinema. This summer, Herbert Nouwens’ steel sculptures will be exhibited across the park (until 31 August) and cinema Het Ketelhuis hosts free outdoor film screenings on Saturday nights (26 July-30 August, www. ketelhuis.nl). Try the tagine at restaurant Raïneraï (www.rainarai.nl) or go for gin and tonics and seafood at Mossel and Gin (www. mosselengin.nl). A dinner and jazz concert at North Sea Jazz Club is the ultimate sultry summer evening (www.northseajazzclub. com), while those who prefer their music a little more four-to-the-floor should check out one of the many EDM festivals hosted here. Milkshake Festival (20 July, www.milk shakefestival.nl) has an especially fun lineup and nice vibe. 

THE PEOPLE’S PARK To the south of the city, Amsterdam’s biggest outdoor draw, the vast Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest), was born of deepest gloom. Three times bigger than New York’s Central Park at around 1,000 hectares, it was created in the depression of the 1930s with two goals – to boost employment and create more green space – and led by architect Cornelis van Eesteren of Bauhaus acclaim. It gets around 4.5 million visitors a year, who come for the Bosbaan – a top-flight waterway for rowing, hosting the World Rowing Championships from 24 to 31 August – the swimming pools, the pancake house and goat farm. All these attractions owe their existence in part to the blood, sweat and tears of the 20,000 Amsterdammers who worked on the project between 1934 and 1940. So whether you’re catching a fashion show while checking your emails via the free Wi-Fi at Westerpark, enjoying fresh hip-hop beats in Oosterpark or checking out the famous Picasso sculpture in Vondelpark, raise a plastic picnic glass to the wonder that is Amsterdam’s vibrant park life.



SARPHATIPARK Sarphatipark isn’t just an attractive proposition because of its tinkling fountains and location just minutes from the bustling Albert Cuyp Market: it’s also the only park in the city where you can get pizza delivered. Amsterdam’s annual Grachtenfestival excels in taking classical music from the confines of the concert hall out amid the city’s iconic waterways.

et to attract more than 60,000 visitors from the Netherlands and abroad this summer, Amsterdam’s annual Grachtenfestival is the seamless fusion of two Mokum specialities: the picturesque waterways that celebrated their 400th anniversary last year, and the city’s tradition of exquisite, innovative classical music-making. A ten-day celebration of ‘water music’, the festival goes well beyond the realms of Handel and his contemporaries, and even compels the secretive occupants of some of Amsterdam’s most exclusive canal-side residences to open

their doors for intimate oneoff concerts. According to its programme director Mirjam Wijzenbeek, ‘the aim of the Grachtenfestival is to introduce classical music to a broad audience in unusual ways, allowing promising young performers to excel in extraordinary venues and affording them an opportunity to take their musical careers to the next level’. She should know. An accomplished violinist in her own right, Wijzenbeek first came in contact with the festival as a performer, and cites her participation as a defining moment: ‘I really think that

the Grachtenfestival turns our city into the world’s most beautiful concert hall. The combination of repertoire and venues presents classical music at the very highest level in an easily accessible format, so it’s a unique experience for both visitors and musicians,’ she says. FLIPPING OUT Aside from the increased prominence of jazz in line with Amsterdam’s status as Jazz World City 2014, the distinguishing factor of this 17th edition of Grachtenfestival Amsterdam is its theme: ‘Upside Down’. Providing a beautiful way to spend a balmy yet cultured summer evening, the Hortus Festival brings classical music to Amsterdam’s botanical gardens. This year’s 11th edition is a homage to Beethoven, who composed music in nature because it was a great source of inspiration for him. One of the highlights is the theatre concert by pianist Maarten van Veen and actor Abel de Vries, which tells the mysterious tale of the storied lock of the composer’s hair, which has been the subject of multiple scientific tests. Elsewhere, master pianist Ronald Brautigam will play highlights from Beethoven’s oeuvre, including the sixth symphony, or Pastoral Symphony. 23 July-31 August, De Hortus www.hortusfestival.nl

 OPERA IN THE GARDEN

ethos is being reflected in both the concert repertoire and the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam venues themselves, with concerts being held everywhere from a basement under a bridge to a venue 78 metres up in the air. Mozart’s old opera favourite Così fan tutte (pictured above right) is being turned on its head for a contemporary makeover and, for a special event entitled Toekomstmuziek (‘music of the future’), young musicians will perform atop the municipal vessels that are used to transport the bikes that have been dredged up from the canals. Elsewhere, the winner

of this year’s Nederlands Conservatorium Concours prize, an accordionist by the rather brilliant name of Vincent van Amsterdam, will perform deep underground in the tunnel of the soon-tobe-completed North/South metro line. The festival’s most popular event by far is the trafficstopping Prinsengracht Concert (Saturday 23 August). Performed on a spectacular, specially-constructed floating pontoon against the backdrop of 17th-century canal houses on the stately Prinsengracht, the concert can be enjoyed for

free from canals, bridges and – of course – boats. Teaming up with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and acclaimed conductor Antonio Pappano, the Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja is set to have audiences (ahem) head over heels with a number of wellknown arias including ‘Nessun Dorma’ from Puccini’s Turandot. The orchestra will also be performing Tchaikovsky’s ever-spectacular 1812 Overture, which traditionally culminates with a simulation of canon fire. Like much of the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam programme, then, it’s explosive stuff.

Harking back to opera’s beginnings as courtly entertainment in Italy, the annual Opera in the Garden performances at Museum van Loon match the grandeur of the canal-house garden with fantastic music. For this tenth edition, Ivo Meinen has created a new chamber music composition for Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck’s Vom Fischer und seiner Frau. ‘The Fisherman and his Wife’ is based on a fairy tale by the brothers Grimm about a poor fisherman who catches an enchanted fish that grants the increasingly outrageous wishes of his greedy wife. After the opera, visitors can have drinks in the garden or tour the house.

A summer season of classical concerts, swinging jazz and lively pop at the Royal Concertgebouw, Robeco SummerNights typically features informal and accessible performances. Legendary Dutch band De Dijk kick off this year’s series and acclaimed soloists including Christian Zacharias, Simon Trpčeski and Simone Lamsma (pictured) are all on the line-up. Ensembles will be flying in from as far away as Melbourne and Toronto to perform and music lovers can also expect unique collaborations, such as Ronald Brautigam and Isabelle van Keulen sharing the SummerNights stage. Curiouser and curiouser

From fantastical taxidermy hybrids to glass models of secret underwater worlds and an overstuffed walrus, things get delightfully freaky for de Appel’s latest exhibition, Curiosity: Art and the Pleasures of Knowing. text Megan Roberts

ike its predecessor the Renaissance Wunderkammer, created to house the natural and artificial discoveries that epitomised that age, the modern museum bears testament to man’s indomitable curiosity. On tour from England’s Turner Contemporary gallery and curated by New York quarterly of art and culture Curiosity magazine, Curiosity: Art and the Pleasures of Knowing, now on show at de Appel arts centre, is a celebration of that inquisitiveness, and it is as strange as one could hope. Witty and wondrous, the eclectic assortment of objets that comprises the exhibition is at times sublime (see Thomas Grünfeld’s taxidermy penguin that tapers to an iridescent peacock’s head, pictured) and at times comes close to the ridiculous (that bloated old walrus, whose skin was stretched sausage-tight by an inept Victorian taxidermist ignorant of the creature’s natural wrinkles). Elsewhere there are sketches of puzzles by Leonardo da Vinci, ornithological watercolours by Turner, historical artefacts and works by modern artists. Seven Rolodexes contain the business cards of contractors hired by the US nuclear weapons facility at Los Alamos at the height of the Cold War; an Antarctic king penguin, brought back

IMAGINING AQUATIC WORLDS Working in the late 19th century, German father and son Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka made incredibly detailed glass models of aquatic creatures for museums of natural history in Europe and beyond. So astonishing was the quality of these creations, that they continue to be exhibited around the world as though they were the real thing. Driven by science, the Blaschkas inadvertently created beautiful art and also contributed to a mythical underwater world – which is mirrored elsewhere in the exhibition in Aurélien Froment’s recent film of a billowing jellyfish that defies classification.

A showcase for talented young theatre makers as well as household names, Over het IJ Festival takes place annually ‘over the River IJ’ on the NDSM-werf and specialises in site-specific location theatre. This year’s festival is themed around urbanisation, and will see actors treating the old shipyard as if it’s their own urban playground. Be sure to check out the Sea Container Programme, which give 15 minutes of fame to recent art and theatre talents within the confines of former shipping containers. And just like any other self-respecting festival, Over het IJ also offers live music, DJs and great food.

The selection of stones – agate, quartz, alabaster – was collected by French writer Roger Caillois, who spied faces, landscapes and animals in their crystalline structures. ‘Like the cabinet of curiosities of the 17th century, which mixed science and art, ancient and modern, reality and fiction, this exhibition refuses to choose between knowledge and pleasure,’ explains curator Brian Dillon. ‘It juxtaposes historical periods and categories of objects to produce an eccentric map of curiosity in its many senses.’ Curiosity peaked? Among others, Danish accountantturned-fashion designer Claes Iversen will show his classy couture on the (invite-only) catwalk. Never before have so many artworks from New York’s Guggenheim Museum been shown in the Netherlands. Thirteen of the 51 pieces displayed were exhibited together during the opening of the legendary museum in New York in 1959. It’s the first time since the 1950s that Europe has seen many of the paintings by CoBrA artists including Appel, Jorn and Alechinsky. The artists who made them were dubbed the ‘Tastebreakers’ by museum director James Johnson Sweeney, who believed they would redefine the boundaries of art. And they did. Among them are Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning.

Best of the summer fests If you go down to the woods today… you’ll find slamming techno, wonky beats and leftfield pop. Welcome to summer festival season.



where else in Amsterdam – are strictly forbidden. Buiten Westen draws a casual clubbing crowd; people come here to party to hedonistic four-to-the-floor beats without worrying too much about the line-up – which is good, nevertheless, and comes courtesy of French DJ Joris Delacroix, German electro/glitch maestro Apparat, Britain’s Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Swede Sebastian Mullaert (of Minilogue fame). Only seven years after its inception, there’s no doubt that Dekmantel is one of the most exciting and prolific electro promoters on the planet. With a line-up that includes the best of classic Detroit techno, the UK variant of the genre, soulful house, British bass music and Amsterdam’s local scene, the second edition of the three-day DEKMANTEL FESTIVAL (1-3 August) is no doubt going to be a highlight for both music nerds and casual clubbers alike. For the first time this year, revellers can camp at the beautiful Amsterdamse Bos location  (which saves you waiting for a cab or trying to find yours among a sea of identical black bikes every night). ith its laidback vibe and liberal tolerances, Amsterdam always feels like a playground in city’s clothing. But when summer comes around and festival season begins, the city turns into a veritable theme park – for adults, that is. Hosting some 300 festivals held each year – featuring superstar DJs, R&B superstars and local talent – Amsterdam’s throwing one hell of a party this summer. We’re here to help you sort the beats from the chaff, with the best of the season’s offerings for beats and bass. Kicking things off on 4 & 5 July is PITCH FESTIVAL at the industrial Westergasfabriek . Organised by the pros behind Holland’s largest pop festivals Lowlands and Pinkpop, you know you’re in good hands. With a mix of leftfield pop, wonky beats, afrobeat and house, this festival draws a crowd of head-nodding connoisseurs with a line-up including Massive Attack, Moderat, Mount Kimbie, Richie Hawtin, The Gaslamp Killer and many, many more. Just around the corner in Westerpark , BUITEN WESTEN takes place on 19 July. Despite ‘buiten westen’ meaning ‘totally trashed’, chemical narcotics – like any-

back-to-back with Detroit’s Ryan Elliott, Russian Nina Kraviz and more. APPELSAP (9 August) is one of the few dance festivals centred on breaks, R&B and hip hop. Held at the Oosterpark in Amsterdam’s east , Appelsap (Apple Juice), draws a sexy local crowd, more keen on mixers than beer. Musically, expect a lot of local Dutch-language hip hop plus a few international urban headliners, including Kanye West collaborators Travi$ Scott and Hudson Mohawke. On 30 August, the summer festival goes out with a bang with VOLTT LOVES SUMMER. Promoters Voltt – veterans on the local techno scene – know how to entertain spoiled four-to-the-floor snobs for a full day in the industrial setting that is the NDSM in Amsterdam-Noord . Although traditionally the Voltt guys like their beats minimal and Germanic, this year’s line-up is more eclectic and inter-Atlantic, boasting a healthy mix of styles from Frankfurt’s Sven Väth, Detroit techno proponent Richie Hawtin and Innervisions Recordings boss Dixon headline. don’t miss these THE BRAVE FESTIVAL EDM is the undisputed king in Amsterdam, and never more so than during summer festival season. So dominant is four-tothe-floor in the Netherlands that open-air singer-songwriter, indie and folk festival The Brave is the only of its kind in the country. The line-up includes Town of Saints (pictured), whose blend of traditional folk and modern indie-rock elements has led to comparisons with Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes and Local Natives, Tessa Rose Jackson (whose catchy folk tune ‘Change Time’ recently featured in a German Ikea advert) and lots more – but, in the spirit of the festival, absolutely no DJs.

Known for his films that explore the relationship between body, mind, technology and mass media, David Cronenberg achieved cult status with a series of intelligent, low-budget horror films, and sealed the deal with Videodrome in 1983. This exhibition gets inside the Canadian director’s head via artefacts including photos, audiovisual fragments and set designs. But it’s the props – the helmet from Videodrome, the surgical instruments from Dead Ringers (1988), the leg braces from Crash (1996), the typewriters from Naked Lunch (1991) and the Telepod from The Fly (1986) – that will get film buffs especially excited. The exhibition is accompanied by screenings of all 18 of Cronenberg’s films.

LALAH HATHAWAY, JAZZ AND R&B SINGER Born: 16 December 1968 (age 45) Talent: The daughter of legendary singer Donny Hathaway, Lalah has a voice as smooth as melted chocolate. Two celebrated but also controversial projects by photographer and filmmaker Larry Clarke. Tulsa (1971) and Teenage Lust (1983) are based on Clark’s first publications, which explored his fascination for youth culture. Tulsa was primarily autobiographical but the later work saw him follow a group of youngsters whose lives were dominated by sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. The explicit images contained in these projects caused widespread commotion when they were released but were also part of the reason why they attained their iconic status. The vintage photos in this exhibition are complemented by several of Clarke’s films.

‘When I was little, all kids took piano lessons. All of those kids are “classically trained”. I think it’s one of those things that people throw out there as some sort of laurel. But if you took a music lesson, you’ve been classically trained… I’m just a mixture of nature and nurture. So I’m a natural musician but I’ve also educated myself about my craft, and I think that has enhanced what was natural about my ability. I don’t think you have to worry about educating yourself and becoming smarter about what you do, having that somehow supersede your natural ability or having it hold you back. I think the combination of both things is what makes you well rounded.’

All aboard the ComedyTrain

The 21st edition of the Englishlanguage laughter fest is on track for another hysterical summer.

hen they last graced the Julidans stage in 2011, the black-clad dancers of German choreographer VA Wölfl’s Neuer Tanz company were, variously, setting fire to their microphones, belting out an opera version of Michael Jackson’s ‘Earth Song’ and toting revolvers in dazzling, mechanical synchronicity. Towards the end of that unforgettable production, Ich sah: Das Lamm auf dem Berg Zion, Offb. 14,1, figures seated in the audience began to rise to their feet and join the hypnotic frenzy of the dance, and it became increasingly difficult to distinguish between the company and the public. Who, precisely, was in on the act? The title of the Julidans festival itself, which has its 24th edition this summer, is intended to convey a sense of the blurring between the traditional roles of performance art, explains Anita van Dolen, the festival’s energetic programme director: ‘Of course, the festival happens in July, but the Dutch word for “July” sounds like the word for “you”, and that’s deliberate. Dance, like music, has the power to tap directly into people’s emotions. It’s a

universal language and no one should be excluded.’ Elitism isn’t a charge that could be levelled at Julidans, however. Last year, for Disabled Theatre, a group of performers with conditions such as Down’s syndrome took to the stage to address the audience. This year Neuer Tanz returns to Julidans with Kürze Stücke, promising to address the apparent contradictions that coexist in our culture, such as the hedonism of party culture and the omnipresence of war. The Belgian-Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui returns to the festival for the sixth time wth Genesis (pictured), demonstrating the festival’s ability to both spot and retain top talent. Of this year’s programme, Van Doelen says: ‘I think the choreographers this year have been inspired by serious personal and social matters, but they’re putting across their ideas with an unprecedented lightness of touch and plenty of humour.’ Let’s hope the microphones survive this time. his July, there’s arguably only one place in Amsterdam guaranteed to be as hilarious as Toomler, the city’s most prestigious comedy club. And that’s the house in which the imported talent is staying. Each Wednesday, you see, a new double bill of international stand-ups (Tom Rhodes and Hannah Gadsby; Ophira Eisenberg and Brooks Wheelan) is arriving for the Comedy Train International Summer Festival, and their enterprising hosts have taken the unusual step of accommodating each pair, together, in a house near to the venue in the manicured Oud-Zuid. Who wouldn’t want to be the proverbial fly on the wall during week three, for example, when harmonica-playing Sean Munnery (who describes his routine as existing somewhere between the realms of ‘unfunny comedy’ and ‘shit art’) shares the breakfast table with famed English actress and ventriloquist Nina Conti (pictured) of dark BBC comedies Black Books and Family Tree, who’ll probably bring her unsettling puppet Monk, a potty-mouthed primate, along for the ride? ComedyTrain’s programme coordinator Stefan Pop (a profes-

sional stand-up comedian in his own right) assures us that, as the acts have been chosen to complement each other on the Toomler stage, they should be able to be relied upon not to kill each other in real life: ‘We wouldn’t put, say, a big party anarchist and a very traditional stand-up on the same bill,’ he says of the arrangement. ‘Plus, it’s a big house, and of course they’ll have their private areas,’ reassures Pop. One situation that Pop says international comedians might find harder to adjust to is the dynamics of a majority-Dutch audience, something he briefs his charges on before they make their first appearance on the Amsterdam stage: ‘It’s a very different atmosphere for comedians who are used to America, where audiences get behind you from the word go. Dutch audiences are different. They make you earn it.’ One thing’s for certain: this summer, Toomler, which is Yiddish for ‘creator of comic tumult’, is certainly living up to its name – sleeping arrangements and all. My father was born in Ovar, near Porto in Portugal. When I was small, we always went there on holiday. We drove from Klazienaveen in the province of Drenthe, where we lived, to Schiphol. My parents always allowed time to stroll through the streets of Amsterdam. It felt as if I was part of the popular Amsterdam detective series Baantjer, which I loved.

The bicycle. I’ve had so many bicycles in Amsterdam, I finally got myself a good lock. I always bike to go to Theater Amsterdam .

2. WHAT SHOULD SOMEONE DO WITH A SINGLE DAY IN AMSTERDAM?

I would go on a canal cruise in the morning, then I would rent a bike and go the Vondelpark . Afterwards I would go shopping in the Jordaan , and, if there was time, I would visit the Rijksmuseum . 3. FAVOURITE AMSTERDAM WORK OF ART?

In the Rijksmuseum the paintings by Rembrandt really stand out, especially ‘The Jewish Bride’ . That is so beautiful.

5. FAVOURITE STATUE?

I am very impressed by ‘De Dokwerker’ (‘The Dockworker’) by Mari Andriessen on the Jonas Daniël Meijerplein, next to the Portuguese Synagogue . It’s a memorial to the February strike of 1941, when Amsterdammers went on strike to protest the deportation of the Jews. 6. TELL US SOMETHING WE DON’T ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THE CITY.

Noord, the Northern district on the other side of the River IJ, is very nice. You can easily get there by ferry, for free. I especially like the NDSM-werf. There are all kinds of activities at this former dockyard. In the summer it hosts festivals – such as theatre festival Over het IJ (www.overhetij.nl) .







7. WHERE WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO SPEND THE NIGHT?

In the Royal Palace on Dam square (www.paleisamsterdam. nl) . Actually, I’ve never been inside – but hey, I met the king at our opening night. So I can ask him if I could spend a night there [Laughs]. 8. WHERE’S THE BEST VIEW OF AMSTERDAM?

From the rooftop of the Theater School on the Jodenbreestraat . From there you can see the whole centre of Amsterdam. 9. FAVOURITE AMSTERDAM DELICACY?

It’s completely authentic. There’s still no electricity. Sometimes they have candlelight concerts. 12. WHAT'S THE BEST THING ABOUT AMSTERDAM?

Amsterdam is an open, cosy city. It’s definitely a big city, but it has the atmosphere of a village. If you’re interested in theatre, you can go to a performance every night. 13. AND THE WORST?

luk de Nacht goes with Amsterdam like coffee goes with cake. For 11 nights every August, film-lovers flock to former dockyard Het Stenen Hoofd at Westerdoksdijk, a ten-minute walk from Amsterdam Central Station, to catch a movie under the stars. Pluk de Nacht (literally ‘Seize the Night’) began in 2003, when three employees of Haarlemmerdijk’s iconic art-house cinema The Movies were searching for an accessible open-air venue to show movies that rocked the international indie festival circuit but never made it to Dutch cinemas. What started with about 3,000 visitors over four weekends grew into the biggest openair film festival in the Netherlands, with a steady turn-out of

around 28,000, and editions in Arnhem and The Hague. But while popular success has taken Pluk de Nacht into the mainstream, the programming remains anything but. It has, however, become increasingly difficult to find unknown – or rather, unnoticed – cinematic gems, concedes artistic director and co-founder Jurriaan Esmeijer. Of course, it would be good news if Dutch distributors were supporting independent films, but the internet looms large in the equation. Still, Pluk is always packed. People come for the vibe and the view as much as for the movies themselves. ‘Either you’ll love it or you’ll hate it, but at least it will spark an emotion,’ says Esmeijer. For the ultimate Pluk experience, get your hands on one of the couple of hundred free

beach chairs. It’s first come, first served, so on sunny days be sure you’re early – the bar opens at five thirty. Don’t want to risk ending up empty handed? Some chairs can be reserved for a small donation (minimum €5). You can also sponsor the festival by buying a beer or a snack at one of the stands – although you are allowed to bring your own food, beverages and chairs. Keep an eye on the website for the complete programme (most movies are either English or English subtitled), if the film will be screened in- or outdoors (there’s a back-up circus tent for inclement weather) and updates on attendance (on busy nights, you might not get in). So be ready to seize a chair – and the night!

luk de Nacht isn’t the only (welcome) returning summer guest on Amsterdam’s film scene. Lovers of gay and lesbian cinema can eat their hearts out at the eighth edition of the Gay & Lesbian Summer Festival, with a selection of the best films the international film festival circuit had to offer. Non-native speakers beware, though: not all movies are in English, and all films come with Dutch subtitles. If those Dutch subtitles aren’t a hurdle – or you happen to be fluent in Portuguese ¬– make sure you catch The Way He Looks, winner of this year’s Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival, about a blind teenager who falls for the new boy in town. Problem is, so does his best – female – friend. Thankfully, there’s also some more foreignerfriendly fare. Like Test, about two gay dancers living in San Francisco in 1985. It’s the height of the AIDS epidemic and young Frankie does his best not to panic. Are those freckles really just freckles? Should he take the new HIV test? In a decidedly lighter vein is Gerontophilia by Canadian filmmaker Bruce La Bruce (L.A. Zombie), a gay riff on Harold and Maude. When an 18-year-old boy discovers the employees of a local nursing home are drugging the residents, he helps one of them escape. Also on the run are old lovers Stella (Olympia Dukakis) and Dot (Brenda Fricker) in the tender-hearted road movie Cloudburst, directed by Thom Fitzgerald (The Hanging Garden). When Dot is being put into a nursing home, Stella busts her out and together they set off for Canada to get married. Feel like binging? On 3 August there’ll be two movie marathons – one featuring the lesbian films; the other the gay selection – screening all the movies on offer.

Club of the month VOLKSHOTEL The city’s biggest nightlife project to date in what was once dubbed the ugliest street in Amsterdam is a self-contained cultural hub, complete with rooftop club, all-night cocktail bar, 172bedroom hotel, café and a ‘DJ Street’ – a corridor of studios where artists work on tunes that they then test on the dance floors elsewhere in the building. Nightlife activities are centred around the transformed Doka – the temporary venue open while the site was under construction for the past ten months, now a 100-capacity speakeasy-style cocktail bar that is likely to be open until seven in the morning – and the renovated Canvas on the seventh floor. Musically, the venue will sit somewhere between the downbeat and breaks of the old Canvas and the überexperimental programming of Doka. Programmer Alexander Van der Meer confirms: ‘Fridays will focus mainly on nonhouse styles, while on Saturday it’ll be four to the floor.’ Confirmed partners include techno crew Dekmantel (hosting festival after-parties at Volkshotel on 1, 2 and 3 August), I Love Vinyl (disco, breaks and soul) and eclectic gay night Get On Down. The Volkshotel will also host ADE’s DJ and musicians’ workshop ’Playground’ this October. Clearly, the right people are on board. Unique in Amsterdam, the Volkshotel will effectively be a 24/7 hub, while Canvas, Doka and Café Werkplaats have overlapping opening hours. Which means you can go straight for breakfast when Doka shuts its doors at seven, bringing nightlife into the cold light of day. We approve. Christiaan de Wit

Where art meets music .

If you haven’t come to Amsterdam for the red lights and cannabis, chances are you’ll be spending quite a lot of time in the plush part of town known as the Museum Quarter. Amsterdam’s answer to London’s South Kensington and New York’s Museum Mile is located just south of the centre, bordered by the Stadhouderskade to the north, the Hobbemakade and Reinier Vinkeleskade to the east, Vondelpark to the west and Emmastraat to the south.

RAGS TO RICHES Some 130 years ago, a stinky wax candle factory and marshy meadows made way for what’s become the city’s most affluent area. Construction began following the completion of the Rijksmuseum , with a street plan based on the design of Pierre Cuypers, the museum’s celebrated architect. Unsurprisingly, the quarter’s name comes from the presence of the city’s three major museums on Museumplein, all of which have recently been refurbished, adding a layer of lustre to the area. In addition to the aforementioned Rijksmuseum, there’s the Stedelijk Museum of modern art  and the Van Gogh Museum , which houses the

world’s largest collection of the artist’s work, with over 700 of his letters, 500 drawings and 200 paintings (including the crowdpleasing ‘Sunflowers’). There’s still some on-going construction – the Van Gogh Museum’s entrance will be moved from the Hobbemastraat to the Museumplein side to join the others – but otherwise it’s business as usual. Also overlooking Museumplein is the Royal Concertgebouw , Amsterdam’s most important orchestral concert venue, internationally renowned for its acoustics and house orchestra. SWANKY SHOPPING The area’s most famous shopping street is undoubtedly PC Hooftstraat, but serious shoppers should certainly visit adjacent Van Baerlestraat for stylish local brands such as Pauw (nos. 72 and 48, www.pauw.nl ) and noted specialists such as art bookshop Boekhandel Robert Premsela (no. 78, www.premsela.nl ) and sheet-music shop Broekmans & Van Poppel (no. 92, www. broekmans.com ). To fuel your shopping spree, you could do a lot worse than the elegant Chang-I, which marries classical Chinese and European culinary influences with too much

SEAFOOD BAR Just around the corner from PC Hooftstraat sits a seafood lovers’ port of call known for its six varieties of oyster, squeaky-fresh sushi and flawless fish and chips – all made with sustainable seafood. This focus on sustainability translates to the light, bright interior, which shuns nautical clichés in favour of recycled wood, exposed brick and polished stone.



aplomb to be dismissed as fussy fusion. A recent menu included dishes such as Iberico pork dumplings, Wagyu fillet with duck liver sauce and durian tart with raspberry sorbet. But don’t just take our word for it. Chang-I was recently voted as the best Chinese restaurant in the Netherlands by no less than NRC Handelsblad newspaper (Jan Willem Brouwersstraat 7, www.chang-i.nl ). Lovers of independent shops and boutiques should head to nearby Jacob Obrechtstraat and Cornelis Schuytstraat. &Klevering Zuid (Jacob Obrechtstraat 19A, www.klevering.nl ) offers a well-curated collection of homewares, toys and gift items. There’s also a popular Saturday market and a creative new coffee and juice bar-slash-marketing agency called Coffee Concepts (Jacob Obrechtstraat 5, www.coffeeconcepts.co ). ByDanie Designer Vintage store (Cornelis Schuytstraat 45, www. bydanie.nl ) deserves a special mention for its immaculate presentation of vintage finds. Pebbles van Noorden (25) owner of IJsboutique ice-cream shop on Cornelis Schuytplein, says: ‘Unlike the PC Hooftstraat, where you’ll only find luxury brands, the offering here reflects the neighbourhood’s family-rich environment, with a butcher, a baker and a really good greengrocer.’ There is a perception that inhabitants of this part of town can be a little elitist and reserved, and perhaps because of a lack of diversity it is often referred to as ‘the reservation’, but Van Noorden disagrees: ‘In the year we’ve been open for business, we’ve been welcomed by the neighbourhood. The locals are really warm and open.’

STEDELIJK MUSEUM The new bathtub-shaped extension of the Netherlands’ largest modern and contemporary art and design museum doesn’t hold water for some, but whatever you make of the controversial renovation, its collection remains one of the world’s finest, with key works by artists and designers such as Mondrian, Rietveld, Appel, Berlage and Van Gogh.

Come to admire the much-praised recent renovation of this treasure trove of Dutch Masters, which artfully blends modern design with the building’s restored 19th-century features, or copy Obama’s pose in front of Rembrandt’s ‘The Night Watch’ (reportedly, ticket sales to US visitors tripled in the week after the famous photo was taken). New this summer in the museum’s garden gallery are some 20 creations by American sculptor Alexander Calder (1898-1976).



or such a reserved, pragmatic and admittedly thrifty lot, that the Dutch bestow three kisses during both greeting and departure seems uncharacteristically excessive, not to mention time-consuming. ‘Ah, the Dutch and threes,’ my Amsterdam friend commented at my recent birthday celebration, where the Dutch rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ sent me off with its traditional three ‘hoeras!’ to blow out more candles than any one cake should ever have to hold. As we were air-kissing goodbye in triplicate, I got to thinking: What is it with Dutch people and threes? While it may have nothing to do with genetic coding or even ancient custom, Amsterdam visitors won’t be able to help but notice the prevalence of threes in their midst. The city’s coat of arms – those three vertical XXXs – adorn every phallic-shaped bollard (or Amsterdammertje) and manhole cover in the city. While they are actually St Andrew’s Crosses, named after the martyred fisherman who died on one of those Xs, you’ll find them gracing more worldly souvenirs such as boxer shorts and big-breasted ceramic ashtrays in promotion of Amsterdam’s triple x-rated Red Light District. There’s the Museumplein and the troika of art institutions that encircle it: the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh and the Stedelijk. Tram 3 will drop you off virtually in the lobby of the bathtub-shaped Stedelijk. Culturally speaking, there are the three Toppers, those stiffly-coifed, faux-tanned

middle-agers whose disastrous 2009 Eurovision appearance has thankfully given way recently to Dutch women superstar contenders such as Anouk and, this year, country darling Ilse DeLange, who gave the bearded Austrian Conchita a damn good run for her money. The royal couple has not one, not two but three little princesses. (Bonus points if you can name them, especially when most Dutch people can’t. Hint: they all begin with the letter A.) There are three parliament members in the Dutch Party for Animals, the world’s only animal-rights party to have nationally elected representatives. (Even more bonus points if you can name them.) t seems you can’t sling a slab of smoky meat these days without hitting yet another establishment offering a ‘new barbecue concept’. In Oost alone there’s the new barbecue joint Bar Brouw, and Smokin’ Barrels is set to open in July. Self-proclaimed ‘grill hotspot’ Grand-Café Lokaal, which opened its doors in May, offers American staples such as widecut spare ribs, five styles of burger and three cuts of steak. The kitchen boasts a gleaming Josper charcoal barbecue, a style of indoor grill-oven famous for retaining the natural juices and flavours of meat, fish and vegetables. Unsurprising then, that our Brooklyn burger (featuring a Black Angus beef patty, bacon, Emmentaler and egg for €13) was moist and moreish, despite the too-soft plastic hamburger bun – hopefully just a teething issue shortly after opening. Lokaal, which translates as ‘local’ or ‘cafeteria’, attracts a lively mix of students and a diverse cross-section of Oost-ites. Inspired by the former packing plants in New York’s Meatpacking District and designed by De Horeca Fabriek, the slick interior combines plenty of warm wood with geometric tiling and industrial work stools for a welcome slice of New Amsterdam on the Wibautstraat.

hile it may ‘technically’ take three to make a trend, two new contemporary Vietnamese restaurants in town give us high hopes that this is no mere coincidence. Pho 91, recently opened on De Pijp’s Albert Cuypstraat, is a cool canteen-style eatery, specialising in the freshest, tastiest pho in town. This flavoursome Vietnamese broth comes fully loaded with flat rice noodles, beansprouts, coriander, sawtooth herb, spring onion and red onion. The tofu version is great – but the Pho 91 special, combining sliced beef and home-

made meatballs, is sublime. Across town on the Rozengracht, meanwhile, the brains behind many of Amsterdam’s coolest restaurants (Lion Noir, BO5, Rose’s Cantina) have opened Restaurant Chow, a pan-Asian spot serving a Vietnamese lunchroom menu during the day courtesy of Nghia N Nghia. THE AFGHAN WHIGS Singer/guitarist Greg Dulli, whose bourbon-soaked voice has found a partner in grunge survivor Mark Lanegan in recent years, is back as frontman of The Afghan Whigs. These New Orleans rockers sound like they’re always mirroring the (darker) R&B and soul sounds of the ’60s. The group technically called it quits in 2001 but reunited a couple of years ago. STAFF BENDA BILILI One of the finest feel-good musical stories in recent memory, these paraplegic street musicians found themselves transported from the neighbourhoods of Kinshasa Zoo to playing major venues across Europe. Founded by two polio victims, Staff Benda Billili has become a dazzling collective of Congolese musicians mixing African rumba beats with more traditional forms of R&B and reggae to great effect. his is the perfect time to explore the Zaan region from the water, taking in the windmills, wooden houses and the polder landscape as you sail along the River Zaan. Sailing is one of the best ways to see the perfectly preserved museum village The Zaanse Schans, whose impressive skyline – studded with working windmills ¬and characteristic green wooden houses – can be perfectly viewed from the water (www.dezaanseschans. nl). The 11km waterfront of the River Zaan connects approximately 75 vintage industrial buildings, including windmills and the vast factory wall at Wormer. It makes for a surprisingly beautiful view from the river. Sloop rental is available in the centre of Zaandam, from where you can explore on

your own. There are countless opportunities to picnic or to dock at a terrace for refreshments – and with a GPS route, even the biggest landlubbers can’t get lost (www.varenopdezaan.nl). If you don’t fancy taking the helm yourself, take a trip on the Zaan Hopper, which sails between Zaandam and Wormerveer every Friday-Sunday (www.zaanhopper.nl). HAARLEM JAZZ & MORE The biggest free jazz festival on the continent takes place in the historic city centre of Haarlem, a hop skip and a jump from Amsterdam. National and international artists and DJs play jazz, funk, soul, hip hop, R&B and electro at five stages across the city, each themed by genre. Puerto Rican Gabriel Ríos brings his pan-cultural electronic pop approach embracing elements of rock, hip hop and salsa, while pint-sized Dutch singer-songwriter VanVelzen, who has supported Kelly Clarkson and Bon Jovi on tour, is sure to give a great live performance. Soulstress Sabrina Stark, reggae/hip-hop outfit Postmen and Dutch-Belgian jazz duo Gare Du Nord are also set to perform. 13-16 August Haarlem www.jazzandmore.nl

LATIN VILLAGE FESTIVAL DUINRELL AND TIKIBAD Duinrell is a small amusement park with all the classic rides you’d expect – but the real reason to go this summer is to cool off in the Tikibad. The best-known tropical swimming pool in the country, Tikibad boasts 11 waterslides, including one with a trapdoor called ‘X-stream’ and one that is 80 metres long and 14 metres high. For the ten-year anniversary of Velsen’s Latin Village Festival, an impressive line-up has been put together and a new, bigger location found. Big names such as Benny Rodrigues, Gregor Salto and Franky Rizardo (pictured) will play highly danceable Latin house beats. HARBOUR FESTIVAL IJMUIDEN During the week the fishing industry runs at full capacity, but once a year IJmuiden’s harbour turns into a cosy family-friendly hangout. Cultural and nautical event Harbour Festival IJmuiden brings youth and street theatre, art, poetry, film and concerts (pop, world and classical music) to the docks, but you can also take tours through the dockyards and on old boats. 30 August Trawlerkade, IJmuiden

GETTING THERE: From Amsterdam Central Station take the train to Haarlem, then transfer to bus 75 (direction IJmuiden Zeedijk) to Zwaanstraat. It’s a 15-minute walk from there. Journey time: 60min.

Find products from young and established designers with a distinctly Dutch design aesthetic, at Dutch Design Year. Recently opened on the Hembrugterrein, a former munitions site, the repurposed optical instruments factory has been turned into a showroom featuring work by Rick Tegelaar (who makes modern lamps out of chicken wire) and Pepe Heykoop (who makes paper vases to put over a water bottle) among others, in combination with curated vintage products. You can also find the newest work by designer Dirk Vander Kooij (known for his Chubby Chair that appears to be made from thick layers of toothpaste) in the shop, as he has conveniently opened his studio in the same building. GETTING THERE: From Amsterdam Central Station take the train to Zaandam, and from there take bus 456 (direction Assendelft, S. de Beauvoirstraat) to Hemkade. The bus departs hourly at a quarter past the hour. Journey time: 25min.

For modern and contemporary art, you can’t beat De Hallen in Haarlem. The museum houses more than 10,000 artworks dating from 1850 to the present day. It’s also the first Dutch museum to have a house poet; inspired by the MoMA in New York, Lucas Hirsch writes poems to accompany exhibitions. This summer, De Hallen presents an exhibition that revolves around the theme ‘skies’. Gaze at paintings, photography, video art and spatial art that shows cloud formations, sunsets, rainbows and moonlit nights by impressionists, modernists and contemporary artists. The exhibition will include works by Constant (the famous CoBrA artist), moving images by Guido van der Werve and objects by Anne de Vries. Until 7 September Grote Markt 16, Haarlem www.dehallen.nl

Until the late 16th century, the area between the Kloveniersbrugwal and Zwanenburgwal was officially ‘the grounds outside the fortress near the Amstel’. It wasn’t until 1593 that the area was annexed to the city. The cloth trade settled and thrived here, and the name ‘Groenburgwal’ indicates that cloth dyers specialising in the colour green operated here. Fast-forward 350-odd years, and legendary Amsterdam street photographer Ed van der Elsken captured black American soldiers on military furlough and Surinamese Amsterdammers heading to the Cotton Club, a jazz café on the Nieuwmarkt. Today, the Cotton Club still stands (www.cottonclubmusic.nl), and is one of the oldest jazz clubs in the city. To coincide with a reprint of his photography publication Amsterdam!, the Amsterdam City Archives is exhibiting more than 100 of Van der Elsken’s street portraits. With images shot between 1947 and 1980, the exhibition provides an enthralling snapshot of a lively period of Dutch history, from dogged revolt against the authorities to post-war poverty and, on the flip side, increasing prosperity in the ’60s and ’70s.
