aar tegenwoordig Amsterdam-Noord ligt, werd vroeger turf gewonnen. Nadat het gebied in 1393 bij Amsterdam gevoegd werd, functioneerde het achtereenvolgens als galgenveld en tolstation voor de scheepvaart door het Noordhollandsch Kanaal. Eind negentiende eeuw bulkte Noord van de zware industrie. Voor de werknemers werden nieuwe arbeiderswijken in de buurt gebouwd. De laatste jaren is de zware industrie grotendeels uit Noord verdwenen, en transformeerde het stadsdeel tot een creatieve hub met een overvloed aan nieuwe restaurants, bars, hotels en winkels. Neem de pont achter het Centraal Station en ontdek een van de coolste buurten van Amsterdam, aan de sunny side van het IJ.

hat we know as Amsterdam-Noord today used to serve mainly as an area for peat extraction. Once it joined Amsterdam in 1393, it functioned as a gallows pit and tolling station for passing ships. By the late 19th century, the city’s heavy industry had found a home in Noord. And, because these industries’ (guest) workers had to be housed, working-class homes were built in the borough. In recent years, since heavy industry largely vacated the area, Noord has become a creative hub, with a smorgasbord of new restaurants, bars, hotels and shops opening, sitting pretty on the sunny side of the IJ-facing waterfront. Catch one of the free ferries from behind Central Station and discover one of Amsterdam’s coolest ’hoods.

TOLHUISTUIN De muziekprogrammering van dit cultuurpodium met zijn grote tuin wordt verzorgd door poptempel Paradiso. Van grime-dj’s tot Afrikaanse dansgroepen. W IS JE T DA T? Deze verlaten scheepswerf is omgetoverd tot een spannende underground-zone met een postapocalyptische sfeer. Het wemelt in de reusachtige voormalige scheepsloodsen van de kunstenaarsinitiatieven en hippe bedrijfjes.

Creatieve vrijhaven

e rommelige werf met zijn roestige loodsen en weerbarstige beton aan de noordzijde van het IJ oogt niet bepaald als de gemiddelde ansichtkaartidylle. Juist dat rauwe trekt de jongste generatie creatievelingen en ondernemers aan; de afgelopen tien jaar is de waarde van het terrein door hun aanwezigheid de lucht ingeschoten. Artistiek pionier Eva de Klerk zag als eerste welke belofte de plek inhield voor de eenentwintigste eeuw, als de uitgestrekte magazijnen in gebruik genomen konden worden door avantgardistische kunstenaars. Ruim tien jaar geleden werkte ze samen met de gemeente en vrijwilligers aan de bouw van Kunststad, een creatief toevluchtsoord en een opwindende broedplaats. In het kielzog van de culturele voorhoede durfden ook commerciële galeries en grote bedrijven zoals MTV de oversteek van het IJ aan. De oorspronkelijke decorbouwers, beeldhouwers en graﬁsch ontwerpers werken nog steeds in hun van ondernemingslust gloeiende Kunststad – en veel van hen vonden ook weer nieuwe opdrachtgevers onder de nieuwkomers (ndsm.nl).

This derelict shipyard-turnededgy art community has a distinctly post-apocalyptic vibe. A creative hub, it bustles with artists’ cooperatives and youth brands, which have sett up shop in the converted factory buildings and hangars.

Creative haven

he blustery expanses, austere tower blocks and rusty warehouses north of the IJ are hardly the idyll that postcards are made of. But that’s precisely the area’s appeal for the new generation of creatives and entrepreneurs who, over the course of the last decade, have made the former shipping yard NDSM hot property. It was art pioneer Eva de Klerk who spied the 21st-century potential of the cavernous shipbuilding hangars at NDSM-werf as a place that arty types could colonise. More than a decade ago, she worked with local government and a band of volunteers to build Kunststad (‘art city’), a creative refuge and cultural breeding ground. Commercial gallerists, then larger businesses, have followed the hip young things across the waters of the IJ. The original set builders, sculptors and graphic designers remain at Kunststad amidst burgeoning business activity – many having found new clients amid the new arrivals (ndsm.nl).

oen Amsterdam eind negentiende eeuw uitbreidde in oostelijke richting, onderging dit gebied een metamorfose: van drassig platteland waar de Amsterdammers zondags uit wandelen gingen naar een dichtbevolkt en snel in populariteit toenemend stadsdeel. Amsterdam-Oost omvat de voorname Weesperzijdestrook langs de Amstel, met monumentale negentiende-eeuwse panden, en de groene Oosterparkbuurt met zijn prachtige park en grote culturele aanbod. Verderop in Oost vind je de Dapperbuurt, met zijn bruisende markt, en de Transvaalbuurt, met expressionistische Amsterdamse School-architectuur. De Indische buurt – waar de straten naar de vroegere Oost-Indische eilanden zijn vernoemd – is een geweldige culturele smeltkroes. Sinds de jaren negentig maakt de buurt een gigantische opleving door, met het Timorplein als kloppend hart. De Javastraat is veranderd in een mediterrane winkelbuurt. Op de Wibautstraat vind je het bruisende Volkshotel, dat behalve een hotel ook een creatieve broedplaats en club Canvas herbergt.

The not so far east

he city’s eastern city expansion, which began in the last quarter of the 19th century, transformed the marshy countryside where Amsterdammers once went for their Sunday walks into a densely populated and increasingly popular borough. There’s the distinguished Weesperzijdestrook with its monumental 19h-century buildings that borders the Amstel river, and the leafy Oosterparkbuurt with its beautiful park and cultural institutions. Head further east and you’ll ﬁnd the Dapperbuurt, with its lively market, and the Transvaalbuurt’s expressionist Amsterdam School architecture. De Indische buurt – so called because its streets are named for islands in the former Dutch East Indies – is extremely ethnically diverse. Since the 1990s it’s been in a state of regeneration, with the Timorplein at its heart, while the Javastraat has been transformed into a Mediterranean-style shopping area. On Wibautstraat, meanwhile, is the Volkshotel, which apart from a hotel also houses a creative incubator and club-ofthe-moment, Canvas.

e Plantage heeft vele gezichten gekend: het was een groene oase, een buurt van theaters en nachtleven, maar ook een buurt die later voorgoed getekend werd door de geschiedenis. Met de eeuwen is één ding constant gebleven: hier kruisen de stad en de natuur steeds weer elkaars wegen, en vind je naast monumentale, lommerrijke straten en parkjes ook dierentuin Artis en de Hortus Botanicus. De Plantage omvat de vroegere Jodenbuurt, en is een stille getuige van de gruwelen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. In de oude Hollandsche Schouwburg, waar de Joden zijn gedeporteerd, is een oorlogsmonument opgericht met de namen van alle Joodse families die tijdens de oorlog zijn omgekomen. De vaste collectie van het Joods Historisch Museum toont Joodse kunstvoorwerpen en historische objecten. De ernaast gelegen Portugese synagoge uit 1675 is nog altijd in gebruik bij Amsterdamse orthodoxe joden. The Jewish Historical Museum, made up of four former Ashkenazi synagogues, houses a vast permanent collection of Jewish art and artefacts; former theatre the Hollandsche Schouwburg is a war memorial bearing the names of all 6,700 Dutch Jewish families who were killed during the war; and the Portuguese Synagogue, dating from 1675, is today a working temple serving Amsterdam’s orthodox Sephardic community. The nearby Resistance Museum (verzetsmuseum.org) tells the stories of those who opposed the Nazis.

et fraaie Oud-Zuid werd ruim een eeuw geleden, volgend op de bouw van het Rijksmuseum, ontwikkeld als culturele rode loper van de stad – bovenop wat eerst een moerassige polder was. e Pijp is een ontmoetingsplaats voor kunstenaars, studenten en vrije geesten. Veel straten zijn hier naar kunstenaars vernoemd. De Ferdinand Bolstraat, een van de drukste straten in de Pijp, draagt de naam van een van Rembrandts leerlingen; de Vincent van Goghstraat behoeft geen uitleg. Eind negentiende eeuw werkte Piet Mondriaan in zijn armzalige atelier aan de Ruysdaelkade (nummer 75, mocht je een kijkje willen nemen) aan zijn baanbrekende kunst. Niet alleen bohemiens, ook hippies en provo’s voelden zich later thuis in de Pijp, dankzij de vele cafés en arthousebioscopen. In de jaren zestig en zeventig vond er een kleine culinaire aardverschuiving plaats. De snelle groei van de Heineken Brouwerij trok Spaanse, Turkse, Marokkaanse en Surinaamse arbeiders aan, die hun eigen keukens meebrachten en ingrediënten verkochten op de Albert Cuypmarkt. Vandaag de dag vind je in de Pijp nog altijd een veelheid aan lekkere restaurants en gezellige cafés.

At the turn of the 21st century, abstract artist Piet Mondriaan allegedly founded his revolutionary art of ‘De Stijl’ in a poky studio on Ruysdaelkade (no. 75, should you want a historical peek). While De Pijp has always harboured beatnik ﬂair, with cafés, art-house cinemas and utopian students in abundance, the area did see a seismic shift in culinary DNA during the ’60s and ’70s. The Heineken Brewery’s immense growth attracted Spanish, Turkish, Moroccan and Surinamese workers, who immediately showcased their tastes around the Albert Cuyp Market. Today, some of the city’s best restaurants and convivial cafés can be found here.

e buurt die lange tijd bekendstond als ‘de Bijlmer’ kan misschien niet langer meer bogen op de grootste diversiteit aan nationaliteiten van Amsterdam (een luttele honderdvijftig), maar het is waarschijnlijk wel nog steeds de enige plaats in Nederland waar je verse doerians (fruit uit Zuidoost-Azië) kan vinden. Of een shopping mall van Amerikaanse proporties, of een Amsterdamse voetbalheld bij het stadion, of een van de modernste concerthallen van Amsterdam. Waar je, als je goed kijkt, een buurt ziet die midden in een spannende overgangsperiode zit. Veel buurtbewoners hebben Caribische wortels, waardoor er een opwindende variëteit aan etenswaren en cultuur is. Zo vestigden zich hier bijvoorbeeld veel Surinamers toen hun land in 1975 onafhankelijk werd. In winkelcentrum Amsterdamse Poort tref je tussen de gebruikelijke winkelketens dan ook allerlei kleine zaakjes en stalletjes aan met producten van over de hele wereld – van de betere currymengsels tot exotische groenten en hair extensions.

he neighbourhood long known as the Bijlmer may no longer have the most nationalities in Amsterdam (just 150), but it’s still probably the only place in the Netherlands where you can buy fresh durians (a South-East Asian fruit). It’s also where you’ll ﬁnd a shopping mall of American proportions, Amsterdam’s resident football heroes and two of the city’s most modern music venues. And, look a little further still and you’ll discover a neighbourhood in full and vibrant transition. Many of the area’s inhabitants have Caribbean roots – the independence of Suriname in 1975 resulted in a large inﬂux of Surinamese immigrants, for example – and so it’s home to an exciting range of food and culture. At the Amsterdamse Poort mall, along with the usual chain stores, smaller shops and stalls offer products from around the world – from spicy curry powder and exotic vegetables to hair extensions.

he leafy yet lively and eminently liveable Oud-West is thoroughly deserving of a visit. Occupying a roughly triangular area bordered by the stately Vondelpark to the south, Oud-West is the result of rapid urban expansion in the last quarter of the 19th century. This dynamic neighbourhood is also home to a ﬂurry of trendy restaurants – many found along the bustling De Clercqstraat. The Overtoom – nowadays a busy arterial road running parallel to the Vondelpark, and the best place in town for furniture shopping – was in the 14th century, a canal with an overtoom – a ‘portage’ where boats were transported overland from one waterway to another. A stone’s throw from the lively Kinkerstraat and Ten Katemarkt, one of Oud-West’s coolest recent developments is De Hallen. This former tram depot is now home to a boutique hotel, cinema, two restaurants and a food hall to rival London’s Borough Market.

oen Rembrandt in 1650 de Spaarndammerdijk richting Halfweg en Haarlem afstruinde om fraaie schuurtjes en boerderijen te vereeuwigen, was het Westerpark nog woest gebied, op een enkel akkertje en wat graan- en houtmolens na. De Westerparkbuurt werd pas eind negentiende eeuw gebouwd, ter huisvesting van de spoorwerkers en havenarbeiders die hier na de aanleg van het Noordzeekanaal kwamen werken. In de jaren tachtig stond de buurt te verkrotten en werden de leegstaande woningen gekraakt. De afgelopen twintig jaar is de buurt opgeknapt en geweldig tot bloei gekomen, mede dankzij de transformatie van de voormalige Westergasfabriek tot culturele hotspot, vanaf 2003. Ook het aangrenzende park werd heringericht met watervalletjes, landelijke slootjes en ruig rietmoeras. Het barstensvolle zomerse festivalprogramma en het levendige terrein met bioscoop, galeries, cafeetjes en restaurants maken een dagje Westerpark tot een belevenis.

Just west of the scenic Jordaan, Westerpark has a multicultural population and a strong cultural edge provided by the sprawling Westergasfabriek cultural complex.

Vibrant cultural park

hen Rembrandt took his famous sketching walk along Spaarndammerdijk in 1650 towards Halfweg and Haarlem, the Westerpark area was still quite wild and only dotted with plots of agricultural land and windmills grinding grain and sawing wood. As a neighbourhood, Westerpark was built up at the end of the 19th century to accommodate workers building on the railway and harbour after the laying of the North Sea Channel. By the 1980s, the buildings were worn out and squatters took over but renewal in the last decade or two, along with the reinvention of the former city gasworks Westergasfabriek, has seen this neighbourhood bloom. The ultimate regeneration success story, it features bucolic, reedy wilderness, with marshes and shallow waterfalls. A full programme of summer festivals – plus galleries, a cinema, lively restaurants and bars – makes Westerpark a full day’s entertainment.
