Following the reopening of the main Rijksmuseum building in 2013, the completely renovated Philips Exhibition Wing – designed by architects Cruz y Ortiz – will open its doors in the autumn of 2014. The wing will be dedicated to both large and small temporary exhibitions and also houses an à la carte restaurant and a café featuring an outdoor terrace on the Museumplein. From 12 February to 17 May 2015, the Rijksmuseum will be presenting the extraordinary exhibition Rembrandt: The Final Years. Read more page 6.

THE RED CARPET

The Overhoeks Tower opposite Amsterdam Central Station will be transformed into the Amsterdam Dance and Music Tower (A’dam Tower) with a mix of offices, nightclubs, a hotel and an observation deck with breathtaking views and a revolving restaurant. The opening is scheduled for the end of 2015.

Amsterdam is building a new entrance to the city centre that will become a warm welcome for both tourists and business visitors alike. Project The Red Carpet will create a new and warm look with the redesigning of the public spaces above the North / South metro line (expected to open in 2017) and will make more space for pedestrians on the busy thoroughfare between Central Station and Dam square. Eventually the route will go all the way to the Nieuwe Vijzelstraat and follow the Ferdinand Bolstraat on to the Ostadestraat.

GALLERY OF THE GOLDEN AGE This year, the Amsterdam Museum, Hermitage Amsterdam and Rijksmuseum will join forces to present a permanent exhibition of over 30 large-scale 17th- and 18th-century group portraits. These paintings are unique in the art world, portraying a characteristically Dutch burgher society. Paintings by Rembrandt, Govert Flinck and Nicolaes Pickenoy are just some of the works to feature in the new presentation, which opens in late November 2014 in Hermitage Amsterdam. Rijksmuseum presents Rembrandt exhibition in 2015 For the first time in over 20 years, the Rijksmuseum will present a Rembrandt exhibition, giving every generation the chance to renew its acquaintance with the ultimate Old Master of the Golden Age. In collaboration with The National Gallery in London, the exhibition Rembrandt: The Final Years presents a comprehensive overview of the Master’s work from around 1652 to his death in 1669. The Hermitage museum on the River Amstel is the Dutch branch of the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia. MUSEUM ons' lieve heer op solder (OUR LORD IN THE ATTIC) On the Oudezijds Voorburgwal in the oldest part of the city you’ll find one of Amsterdam’s most unexpected museums. At first glance, Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder (Our Lord in the Attic) looks like a typical 17th-century canal house, but there’s a historical church hidden behind the classical façade. This clandestine church in the attic dates back to the time when Catholics were not permitted to openly practice their faith. aanstreek was the birthplace of some of the most prominent Dutch multinationals, because in the 17th century Amsterdamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s craft guilds opposed the construction of windmills. By contrast, in the Zaanstreek businesses were given all the space they needed. In no time hundreds of windmills had been built, making the Zaanstreek the oldest industrial area in Western Europe. Wood was sawn, sails and ropes were made in these mills and ships were built in the nearby docks, in which enterprising tradesmen set sail across the seas. The goods they brought back from their voyages - mustard, cocoa, wood, paint and paper - were processed here too. This laid the foundation for rapid industrialisation in the 19th century along the River Zaan. The Zaanstreek is well known for the beautiful panoramic landscape. Twelve windmills are still in use and can be visited. Today, in the Zaanse Schans many of the characteristic regional houses are now museums and workshops, which demonstrate traditional crafts and provide eager tourists with plenty of souvenirs and photo opportunities.

Boat trip on the river Zaan Taking a boat tour is one of the best ways to visit the various sites along the Zaan River. Both small boats and boats that can accommodate groups of 12-60 are available for hire. Skip across the 11 km Zaan, along historical locks and bridges. You will be able to see the Dutch windmills and the old factory sites which made the region, which is now an area of valuable industrial heritage, so popular. The boat tour should include the Wormer Industriewand (industrial wall) with its impressive factory sites. SAY CHEESE Or should that be Edam? The famous round cheeses with their distinctive red paraffin coating traditionally produced in this quaint medieval town have been travelling to the most remote corners of the world for centuries now. And cheese is still at the centre of life here – both figuratively and literally: the Kaasmarkt (cheese market), given the royal sanction by William of Orange back in the 16th century, is the town’s focal point. These days it’s more about entertaining tourists, but the cheese market remained the town’s economic anchor right up until the 1920s. smalltown harbours

n the ‘Old Holland’ villages of Edam, Marken and Volendam, with their picturesque canals, harbours, dykes and wooden fishermen’s houses, it can seem as though time has stood still. Traditional costumes and clogs are still frequently worn throughout the region, which makes for postcard-ready views, recalling scenes from historic Dutch paintings. Pull up at one of the intimate cafés or restaurants for a cup of coffee or some herring – served in the typically Dutch way, of course.

Grand churches, iconic museums, plenty of shopping, canals and cobblestone streets: Haarlem is a destination in itself.

or centuries, Haarlem was the leading Dutch city in terms of art. Renowned as one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands, Haarlemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s artists drew great inspiration from their immediate surroundings. The city has an exceptionally rich history, with a vast number of great churches, a cathedral, windmills, historic city hall and the famous Haarlem hofjes (courtyards), which were famed for creating a peaceful ambiance in the heart of the bustling city. On the River Spaarne, which winds its way through Haarlem, is the Waag (Weighing House) from 1599, where traders weighed cheese and butter, while the striking Molen de Adriaan towers 12 metres above the Spaarne. Of course, there are many museums, as well as world-class shopping and dining.

THE HISTORIC GARDEN

he Netherlands is truly a land of flowers. Cycling or hiking through North Holland’s bulb fields in springtime really is a mesmerising experience. With everything in full bloom, you’re surrounded on all sides by rainbow-like rows of colour – purple hyacinths, countless varieties of tulips and bright yellow daffodils. You can even meet the flower growers or take a tour of the vast flower auctions. The real paradise for flower lovers is, of course, the Keukenhof (20 March–17 May 2015). This famous flower park is home to 7 million blossoming bulbs, as well as idyllic ponds, ancient trees and flowering shrubs. Contact information page 62

he winding River Vecht, a branch of the Rhine, meanders between Amsterdam and Utrecht, passing impressive villas and their carefully manicured gardens. These estates were originally the summer houses of wealthy Golden Age Amsterdammers, who would retreat from the city’s oppressive heat to the countryside during the summer months. At the start of the 17th century the River Vecht was the most important link between Amsterdam and Utrecht, and the holidaymakers ‘only’ needed five to seven hours to reach their splendid rural residences. Don’t miss Castle Nijenrode, one of the area’s most impressive heritage sites, with its imposing gateway and drawbridge. Nowadays it’s filled with students: it is a prestigious private business university, founded in 1946.

KASTEEL-MUSEUM SYPESTEYN As the last male member of his line, Lord Henri van Sypesteyn (1857-1937) built Castle Sypesteyn as a tribute to his family, filling it with the familial collection of portraits, antiquities and excellent examples of Loosdrecht porcelain – one of the finest private collections in the country. These are cities with a rich history, restored forts and castles dating back to the Middle Ages, and green city walls. The many forts in the area comprised the Defence Line of Amsterdam, a 135-kilometre-long fortification around Amsterdam that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can slip into the casement of the Muizenfort, visit the region’s most famous castle and take a walk along the top of the city walls. The Middle Ages come vividly to life here, yet it’s all just a stone’s throw from Amsterdam! The fortified town of Muiden lies on the IJmeer Lake. Neatly laid out, peaceful and green, it has a picturesque harbour with small cafés and restaurants, while Naarden is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in Europe. Weesp, meanwhile, not only has multiple fortresses, but windmills as well.

NEED TO KNOW The compact size of the metropolis and the efficient public transport make Amsterdam easily accessible. Train The train station at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located directly below the airport. The journey to Amsterdam Central Station takes just 20 minutes (one-way ticket k4). Every day dozens of trains, including high-speed ones, leave from Amsterdam to other European destinations such as Brussels, Paris and Frankfurt. All parts of the Netherlands can be easily and quickly accessed by train. Tickets are for sale at the NS service desk or ticket machines. www.ns.nl

EASY & Affordable parking with P+R Parking in a P+R car park costs only k1 or k8 per 24 hours, with a maximum parking time of 96 hours. taxis Taxis can be handy when travelling to and from the airport, late at night when the trams have stopped running or when you’re running late. Because space in the city centre is limited, taxis cannot stop anywhere they like. Taxi stands, which are identified by blue taxi signs, can be found near tourist hotspots such as Central Station and Leidseplein.

amsterdam marketing PUBLIC TRANSPORT P+R Travelling within Amsterdam is straight-forward and convenient. There is an extensive transport network connecting city districts. This includes the tram, metro, bus and (free) ferry. Journeys are paid for with a public transport card (OV-chipkaart). The Visitor Information Centres offer 24- to 96-hour tickets (1-4 days) that entitle you to unlimited travel through Amsterdam. The public transport company (GVB) offers up to 168-hour tickets (1-7 days). Drivers and conductors also sell 1-hour (k2.80) and 24-hour (k7.50) disposable cards on trams and buses.
