12 Amsterdam ranks as the most attractive city in the world for the ’creative class’, based on the ‘three Ts’ of economic development: talent, technology and tolerance, plus amenities and quality of place. The ’creative class’ includes people in science and engineering, architecture and design, education, arts, music and entertainment whose economic function is to create new ideas, new technology and new creative content. InnovationLab Innovation concept officially launched during HISWA Amsterdam Boat Show: Amsterdam RAI enhances its exhibitions with the InnovationLAB. Wednesday, 11 March 2015 saw the official launch of the InnovationLAB platform by Amsterdam RAI and its external partners TNO, 3TU Federatie and Accenture Innovation Awards. The InnovationLAB is an inspiring environment designed to enable exhibitors and visitors to share their knowledge and experiences in the field of innovation. From now on, innovations will have their own clear and central place in the exhibitions organised by Amsterdam RAI. Innovation is often given as one of the top three reasons to visit an exhibition. In response, Amsterdam RAI has created the InnovationLAB concept, creating places where ideas, innovations and news are given material form on both the exhibition floor and online. The advantages The InnovationLAB is a rich and inspiring platform that allows Amsterdam RAI to stimulate exhibitors to enhance the spotlight on their innovations. In addition, it gives knowledge centres, research institutes, innovation partners and the like a platform to market their innovations, further enriching Amsterdam RAI’s exhibitions. This, in turn, will help inspire visitors, as Ids Boersma, Director of RAI Exhibitions, explains: ‘The InnovationLAB is a platform where visitors can see and experience the innovations in their market, both online and in real life. In addition, the medium of exhibitions is distinguished and profiled based on this crucial topic. The InnovationLAB is a generic concept that can be customised to suit any trade show.’ Cooperation Amsterdam RAI has now officially confirmed its cooperation with TNO, 3TU Federatie and Accenture Innovation Awards. ‘The InnovationLAB will make innovations visible and tangible to a broad audience,” explains Esther van Zeggeren, Director of Marketing & Communications at TNO. ‘It will also serve as a bridge between people and knowledge, a vital precondition for more innovations. We call this “Innovation for life”.’ IJsbrand Haagsma, Secretary General of 3TU Generatie, comments: ‘We see the cooperation with Amsterdam RAI as an excellent way to bring scientific technological developments closer to the public. The government expects us to work on valorisation as well as teaching and research; that is, we should create practical applications for the knowledge we develop. This is what we showcase in the InnovationLAB.’ ‘Improving brand familiarity is one of the main goals of Innovation Awards participants,’ adds Pieter-Paul van Oerle, initiative taker and organiser of Accenture Innovation Awards. ‘Our cooperation with Amsterdam RAI lets us meet this need even better in the framework of various appropriate concepts.’ The next exhibition where the InnovationLAB will be deployed will be the AutoRAI in April 2015. Next, it will be the turn of Rematec, SSA and the BedrijfsAutoRAI, followed by the international exhibitions Aquatech Amsterdam and METS in November.
MICE update Amsterdam’s international outlook acts as a gateway to continental Europe. English is widely spoken and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the continent’s busiest and most efficient. Crucially, Amsterdam measures high on quality-of-life indices, which makes it easy to hire talent. ‘It has the culture, the canals - it’s not hard to attract people due to the quality of life here,’ explains Reinout te Brake, founding partner of the GameOn fund. Meetings have become more interactive Martha Sheridan has underlined the fact that information does not follow a one-way track any more. Many of those that simply attended in the past have now turned into active participants. Interaction is greatly helped by the latest technological developments, by social media and specific apps. Something that fits perfectly with the image of creative Amsterdam and doing smart business.
Pictured from left to right: Pieter-Paul van Oerle, Accenture Innovation Awards; IJsbrand Haagsma, 3TU Federatie; Ids Boersma, Director of RAI Exhibitions; Claar van Ittersum, Manager of InnovationLAB at Amsterdam RAI; and Esther van Zeggeren, TNO.
Choices are made with costs in mind Overall, rates are still lower than those registered before the economic crisis.
Hotels, convention centres and other such destinations are still offering great incentives to both planners and attendees. For this, Amsterdam has designed the ‘I amsterdam approved’ label. Conference organisers can receive the official ‘I amsterdam approved’ guarantee of availability and quality of hotel rooms. The initiative was conceived and implemented by the Task Force Citywide Congresses, a collaborative effort between Amsterdam’s large business hotels, the Amsterdam RAI conference centre, Amsterdam Marketing and other relevant parties. The conference and the three-, four- and five-star hotels must specify before-
hand in a charter how many rooms they can offer the citywide conference organisers. By doing so, the city will be able to field bids for large conference proposals in a quick and efficient way without holding preliminary discussions, and guarantee the availability of a maximum of 16,000 rooms. The MICE Industry and the most recent trends – compliance becomes an important issue Amsterdam has started a dedicated CGR working/knowledge group, consisting of the Dutch chapter of CGR, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, Amsterdam RAI, Netherlands

Your global meetings partner for airline travel
AIR FRANCE KLM
The Netherlands as MICE destination With KLM and its large network and hub Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the Netherlands has a great deal to offer (international) exhibition and conference visitors. The KLM Group flies directly to Amsterdam from 185 airports worldwide, offering direct connections to most of the world’s major economic regions. As a member of the SkyTeam alliance, KLM is part of a network that connects 921 destinations in 168 countries. Discounted fares with AIR FRANCE KLM Especially for the MICE industry, AIR FRANCE KLM developed the proposition AIR FRANCE & KLM Global Meetings, offering organisers of exhibitions, conferences and events a free online tool that is unique within the aviation industry. It enables organisers to make their event more attractive to visitors and exhibitors by offering discounts up to 15% on most KLM and Air France fares. In addition, the organiser can earn free tickets. • Discounted fares are valid on all AIR FRANCE KLM flights and partner code share flights (e.g. Alitalia, Delta Air Lines) with AF/KL flight numbers. • Eligibility from/to any AIR FRANCE KLM destination, e.g. New York/Amsterdam, Amsterdam/London and Buenos Aires/Amsterdam. • Discounted fares are available from five days prior to five days after the event dates. • Ticketing via an IATA travel agent is also possible. • Programme is for individual bookings (not for groups). Additional information: The event should be registered via www.airfranceklm-globalmeet ings.com at least two months before it is due to start. The organiser will then receive a communication kit including a link with an Event ID code. The link and AIR FRANCE & KLM Global Meetings logos must be posted on the event website. Event participants can log in with the assigned Event ID code to book their flights. See www.airfranceklm-globalmeetings.com for complete terms & conditions. Board of Tourism & Conventions and Amsterdam Marketing, and is presided over by Mayor Van der Laan. This knowledge group is working together to improve communication regarding new medical convention requests while learning from conventions that have been held in Amsterdam since 2013. • As a result of this working group, the Netherlands/Amsterdam offers personalised service where the Dutch chapter of CGR could meet ECCO to see where you have questions and provide solutions. For example, ERS has received personalised advice, tailored to ERS’s needs regarding how to set up an exhibition or how to organise paid seminars. • As EU law was created and rolled out by the pharma industry, Dutch pharma companies are familiar with the implementation, as other large, city-wide and international medical meetings have been held since then. DMOs are behind MICE expansion Both DMC and DMO support is considered
crucial for planners, especially in regards to growing markets. Acquiring the maximum information beforehand is also beneficial for onference attendees, ultimately, improving their experience. Working with local companies can also increase the rates of success, nd events focus on regional markets. Within an always-changing context, planners must constantly adapt to newer demands. Currently, that entails a focus on local/regional markets while tackling more specific subjects. A local/regional approach also proves to be cost- and time-effective. Amsterdam is an ideal conference destination, where many aspects of planning an event are made easier by both the small scale of the city and the wide range of available resources. However, organising meetings and conventions is a time-consuming and complex task in any city. Thankfully, there is help at hand.
2014 has proved to be a highly successful year for hotels in Amsterdam, and a recent report by the consultancy PWC states that there is room for further growth. Lucrative business Amsterdam is expected to remain in the top ten of best performing cities in the hotel industry in Europe. In its industry report, the ‘European Cities Hotel Forecast’, PWC states that it expects hotels in most major cities to perform well in 2015. Only Geneva, Moscow and Zurich should prepare for deteriorating results. Due to improving economic conditions and a resulting increase in corporate travel, PWC expects the industry fundamentals in Amsterdam to improve even further. The RevPAR (revenue per available room) is expected to increase to 3.6% in Amsterdam, which would make the Dutch capital the seventh best performing city in Europe on RevPAR. Occupancy rates in Amsterdam are also expected to remain high – at almost 80% – according to PwC. Booming sector Amsterdam stands out as one of the few cities with a significant amount of new hotel rooms to be added this year. The new Hyatt Regency hotel is scheduled to open in 2015, while the W Hotel chain is also expected to make its Dutch debut in Amsterdam this year. In the last few years, Amsterdam has proven to be a highly attractive location to invest for hotels operating in the top segment of the market. In 2014, the legendary Waldorf Astoria opened a 94-room hotel on the prestigious Herengracht canal. Hyatt opened its first Andaz Hotel in Amsterdam in 2012. 3

Unique locations & events HOTEL NEWS Hotel policy 2006-2015 and recent hotel developments There will be a joint strategy for hotel developments across the Amsterdam Region until 2022, agree by the aldermen of Amsterdam and Haarlemmermeer. Amsterdam and the Metropolitan Region Amsterdam (MRA) have made up ground with 6,000 additional rooms. As a result, room occupancy and prices are at a desired level and the number of visitors has increased. In the coming years, the MRA is aiming for growth. A regional team will follow the hotel developments continuously, indicate promising areas for new hotels and advise on new initiatives. These include the Amsterdam North and Schiphol areas, where there is room to develop hotels and create affordable rooms.

Unique locations & events
Heineken Experience Inspiring and unique, a venue that serves more than just the ‘perfect beer’
The Heineken Experience is one of Amsterdam’s most exclusive venues for meetings and events. It offers five historical rooms, each with a different atmosphere, a capacity up to 850 people, a spectacular view over the heart of the city, excellent hospitality and many gastronomical possibilities. It is the ideal location to have a memorable business event. Back in the day, these event rooms were used to store the ingredients of Heineken when the brewery was operational from 1864 to 1989. The Koelschip (pictured above) has a capacity of 400 people and a modern style. It is a bright space with a terrace, perfect for having a barbecue in the summer. The authentic atmosphere of Heineken can be found in the Molenzolder, which is decorated in a typical Dutch style. Furthermore there’s the Moutzolder, Hopzolder and the Brouwerskamer for more intimate events.
Looking for a special venue for a conference, meeting, product presentation or gala? Located on the waterfront just outside central Amsterdam in the Western Harbour district, the brand new Theater Amsterdam offers several conference rooms, each with their own character and different capacities. All areas are well suited for both small as well as large groups that can range from 10 to 1,100 guests. Theater Amsterdam offers unique possibilities for projections and the latest theatre technology. We have 500m2 of projection screens with a radius of 50 metres and a height of 9 metres, build 180 degrees around the audience.
The Heineken Experience is part of the ‘European Route of Industrial Heritage’ and is, besides a unique location, also one of the biggest attractions in Amsterdam. This tour through the dynamic world of Heineken can be a great addition to any event.
Restaurant Boven de Planken is situated on the floating first floor of the theatre. The restaurant offers stunning views over the harbour area and Amsterdam. In this innovative restaurant it is possible to dine with up to 200 guests. For a walking dinner, we can accommodate 300 guests.

Gassan Diamonds Amsterdam has been known as ‘the City of Diamonds’ for over 425 years and in the greenest museum quarter of Amsterdam known as ‘de Plantage’ you will find Gassan Diamonds. This formerly steam driven diamond factory, originally build in 1879, is the oldest in Amsterdam. Gassan Diamonds offers free diamond tours led by expert guides in your own language. Visitors can admire diamond polishers at work and learn about what factors determine the quality of diamonds and their related value. Gassan Diamonds can provide business-to-business activities for both small and big groups. To give you an impression of the possibilities, you will find some suggestions below. • Organise your meeting in the oldest diamond factory in Amsterdam. • Add a lovely lunch or cocktail to complete your programme. • You can combine the diamond experience with a Diamond and Champagne Surprise cocktail. Depending on the budget, there will be, for example one genuine brilliant-cut diamond in one of the glasses and the rest will contain a synthetic stone. Once everyone has enjoyed the champagne, a diamond expert will then check the stones and consequently find the lucky winner of the real diamond. This promotion brings a lot of excitement to a sophisticated incentive travel participant. • Gassan Diamonds not only offers products, but services as well – for example, anniversary programmes and after-sales service. • Organise events for employees of your company with the purpose of teambuilding. Arrive or leave Gassan Diamonds the Dutch way. For example, you can rent a bike, have a canal cruise or visit by tourist bus. Parking facilities, also for buses and a mooring site for canal boats, are available. Gassan Diamonds is open seven days a week from 09.00 to 17.00. 9
