VAN GOGH MUSEUM

V

incent Van Gogh might just be the Netherlands’ best-known contribution to the art world. The Amsterdam museum that bears his name houses the largest collection of pieces by Vincent van Gogh in the world. In total, the permanent collection includes 200 paintings, 500 drawings and more than 700 letters, plus his collection of Japanese prints. For both locals and far-travelling visitors, the Van Gogh Museum is a unique and inspirational experience. Alongside his instantly recognisable impressionist works, such as his landscapes, self-portraits and still lifes – especially ‘Sunflowers’ – the museum provides opportunities to track the artist’s development and compare his paintings to works by other artists from the 19th century – those who inspired him and those who drew inspiration from him. Every Friday evening, the Van Gogh Museum stays open until 22.00, inviting musicians, DJs and other performers to share its public spaces with the artworks and visitors – who can also enjoy a drink.F FREE with the I amsterdam City Card Contact information page 61

2015 VINCENT VAN GOGH: 125 YEARS OF INSPIRATION MUNCH | VAN GOGH Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) and Edvard Munch (18631945) are known for their emotionally charged paintings and drawings, their personal and innovative style and their lives full of hardship. Despite many striking parallels in their oeuvres and artistic ambitions, the challenge of juxtaposing them in an exhibition has never been met. The Van Gogh Museum and the Munch Museum have therefore joined forces to create this once-in-alifetime exhibition. 24 September 2015-17 January 2016

ROEL PRIKKEN

Z

aanstreek was the birthplace of some of the most prominent Dutch multinationals, because in the 17th century Amsterdam’s craft guilds opposed the construction of windmills. By contrast, in the Zaanstreek businesses were given all the space they needed. In no time hundreds of windmills had been built, making the Zaanstreek the oldest industrial area in Western Europe. Wood was sawn, sails and ropes were made in these mills and ships were built in the nearby docks, in which enterprising tradesmen set sail across the seas. The goods they brought back from their voyages - mustard, cocoa, wood, paint and paper - were processed here too. This laid the foundation for rapid industrialisation in the 19th century along the River Zaan. The Zaanstreek is well known for the beautiful panoramic landscape. Twelve windmills are still in use and can be visited. Today, in the Zaanse Schans many of the characteristic regional houses are now museums and workshops, which demonstrate traditional crafts and provide eager tourists with plenty of souvenirs and photo opportunities.

The famous round cheeses with their distinctive red paraffin coating traditionally produced in this quaint medieval town have been travelling to the most remote corners of the world for centuries now. FLOWERS

The Netherlands produces 70 per cent of the world’s commercial flower output. In the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, you’ll see contemporary Dutch flower power in action.

THE HISTORIC GARDEN

T

he Netherlands is truly a land of flowers. Cycling or hiking through North Holland’s bulb fields in springtime really is a mesmerising experience. With everything in full bloom, you’re surrounded on all sides by rainbow-like rows of colour – purple hyacinths, countless varieties of tulips and bright yellow daffodils. You can even meet the flower growers or take a tour of the vast flower auctions. The real paradise for flower lovers is, of course, the Keukenhof (20 March–18 May 2014). This famous flower park is home to 7 million blossoming bulbs, as well as idyllic ponds, ancient trees and flowering shrubs.

Contact information page 62

ECONOMIC BLOOM The green-fingered should be sure to visit FloraHolland’s enormous flower auction to witness Holland’s contemporary bulb boom. Each day, 19 million flowers and 2 million plants are sold in an area so large the workers traverse it by bike.

Take your flower experience to the next level with a tour of the horticultural museum the Historische Tuin (Historic Garden), which tells the story of horticulture in the area from the 1700s until around 1940, in an area totalling 13,000 square metres. www.htaalsmeer.org

The earlier you arrive (it opens at 07.00) the more action you’ll see. Buyers haggle for the best prices, and the blooms – brightly coloured and heavenly scented – are dispatched all over the globe within hours of being sold. The flowers are sold in a ‘Dutch auction’: as the clock ticks down, the price of the flowers gets lower. Bidders risk either paying too much or missing out entirely. Contact information page 62

The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area boasts more than its share of imposing castles, historical forts and impressive country houses.

THE RIVER VECHT

T

he winding River Vecht, a branch of the Rhine, meanders between Amsterdam and Utrecht, passing impressive villas and their carefully manicured gardens. These estates were originally the summer houses of wealthy Golden Age Amsterdammers, who would retreat from the city’s oppressive heat to the countryside during the summer months. At the start of the 17th century the River Vecht was the most important link between Amsterdam and Utrecht, and the holidaymakers ‘only’ needed five to seven hours to reach their splendid rural residences. Don’t miss Castle Nijenrode, one of the area’s most impressive heritage sites, with its imposing gateway and drawbridge. Nowadays it’s filled with students: it is a prestigious private business university, founded in 1946.

NEDERLANDS VESTINGMUSEUM (FORTRESS MUSEUM) How did Amsterdam’s soldiers guard the city? Naarden’s dark, damp casemates played a key role. This museum comprises several exhibits, including ones on fortification, garrison life, the Dutch Water Line and the history of the city of Naarden.

uiden, Naarden and Weesp are extremely well preserved examples of historic fortified towns. These are cities with a rich history, restored forts and castles dating back to the Middle Ages, and green city walls. The many forts in the area comprised the Defence Line of Amsterdam, a 135-kilometre-long fortification around Amsterdam that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can slip into the casement of the Muizenfort, visit the region’s most famous castle and take a walk along the top of the city walls. The Middle Ages come vividly to life here, yet it’s all just a stone’s throw from Amsterdam! The fortified town of Muiden lies on the IJmeer Lake. Neatly laid out, peaceful and green, it has a picturesque harbour with small cafés and restaurants, while Naarden is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in Europe. ake a seaside stroll, shop or hop from one sunny beachside terrace to the next. And of course, enjoy the amazing views and the exceptionally wide sandy beach. Zandvoort is one of the Netherlands’ oldest beach resorts, with the first bathhouse put into use back in 1829. This was the start of the development of a luxury bathing resort frequented by many people of renown – including Austrian Empress Sisi – and it remains one of the region’s most popular beaches. HIGH-OCTANE THRILLS If relaxing on the beach isn’t your thing, you’ll find plenty of high-octane excitement at Circuit Park Zandvoort. Nestled amidst the dunes, each weekend it plays host to diverse (inter)national

he tranquil and broad beach at IJmuiden aan Zee is not only perfect for chilling out and breathing in the salty sea air, but also for working up a sweat with popular beach and water sports. Kite-surfing is particularly popular, as is racing kite buggies across the sand. There’s a surfing centre right on the beach where you can learn the basics, as well as rent wetsuits and gear, and while you probably won’t master kite-surfing in a single day, it’s all the more reason to come back. IJmuiden is the only gateway to Amsterdam harbour for large seafaring vessels and cruise boats. Gawp at the huge ships, find out how the four locks work and don’t forget to eat a fresh herring or fried fish.

NEW LAND

With their modern architecture and water-rich landscapes, the ‘new towns’ just east of the city form a modern contrast to the rich history of the region.

ALMERE & LELYSTAD

I

t is well known that the Dutch have been waging a war against water for centuries, building dykes and dams, and pioneering innovative techniques to protect and reclaim land. The province of Flevoland is one of the finest examples, as its entire land was drained and reclaimed from the sea. Standing here now are new cities, famous for their modern architecture as well as their water-rich natural landscape. In taking a bike ride through the ‘new towns’ of Almere and Lelystad, you’ll not only encounter iconic architectural design but also quiet beaches and protected countryside. The Oostvaardersplassen, for example, is nature at its most pure, where nature develops in a manner considered impossible in the Netherlands. Anyone who’s experienced the biggest polder landscape in the world has truly encountered the real Netherlands.

February VALENTINE’S DAY Amsterdam is one of the most romantic cities in the world: cosy up for dinner, take a boat cruise or just stroll through the old cobblestoned streets. 14 FEBRUARY

In the streets, canals, parks and everywhere in between, the city is bursting with orange as Amsterdammers enjoy the biggest street party of the year. Amsterdam will celebrate King’s Day (Koningsdag) for the first time in 2014, after the inauguration of King Willem-Alexander on 30 April 2013 (what was then still Queen’s Day). King’s Day will officially be celebrated on 27 April (the king’s birthday). However, the event is traditionally not celebrated on a Sunday which means that the first King’s Day will be held on Saturday, 26 April 2014. 26 APRIL

AMSTERDAM LIGHT FESTIVAL Everything is illuminated when the Amsterdam Light Festival sheds light on some of the city centre’s most beautiful and historical locations with art installations, light exhibits and illuminated walking routes. DECEMBER 2014- MID JANUARY 2015 www.amsterdamlightfestival.com

In 2015 Amsterdam will focus on the creativity, determination and open-mindedness that have characterised city life here through the ages. Amsterdam’s art institutions honour the energy and determination of the artists who have lived and worked here. In February, the Rijksmuseum celebrates the genius of the unconventional Rembrandt van Rijn with a major retrospective of his later works (see page 6), while 19th-century genius Vincent van Gogh – who died 125 years ago in 2015 – will have a major exhibition in September at the museum that bears his name, together with that other great northern painter of desperation, Edvard Munch (see page 9). Other landmark events in 2015 include the 120th birthday of the Stedelijk Museum and 50 years of the National Opera. Held once every five years, SAIL Amsterdam sees the world’s finest sailing vessels, historical and modern, moored in Amsterdam from 19 to 23 August. This massive event will lure boating enthusiasts from all over the world.

BUSINESS CITY

BUSINESS CITY Throughout the ages, Amsterdam has always been a centre for global trade and manufacturing.

T

he Amsterdam Area is a melting pot of people and cultures where virtually all nationalities (177) have made their home. This is reflected in the high level of amenities and facilities. There are hotels and restaurants to suit all tastes, and the cultural scene is rich and diverse. The many sporting facilities make Amsterdam a sports paradise. Without exception, internationals find visiting or living in the city and its region an unforgettable and inspiring experience. INSPIRING CITY Amsterdam has a strong tradition as a city of inspiration. The city may be relatively small in size, but that did not stop it becoming one of the world’s most powerful and wealthy cities during the 17th century. A leader in trade, the Amsterdam Stock Exchange was originally founded in 1602 and the world’s very first shares were issued in Amsterdam in 1606. INTELLECTUAL & CREATIVE CITY Currently, the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area has 2.2 million inhabitants, two universities, six technical colleges, two academic hospitals, 40 independent research institutes and more than 100,000 students in higher education. The city offers high-tech companies a large pool of well-educated and expertly trained professionals. Approximately 44 per cent

There are international train connections to Germany and a high-speed train link to Brussels, Paris and London. An extensive network of roads and waterways links the region to the rest of Europe. few minutes at Schiphol and you’ll soon forget you’re in an airport. It's with good reason that it is repeatedly voted ‘airport of the year’: you can shop until you drop, with stores stocking everything from luxury clothing brands to books, cosmetics and souvenirs and all that’s in between. There’s even a branch of the world-famous Rijksmuseum, displaying genuine Dutch masterpieces that passengers can see for free. If you’ve more time to kill (and money to spare), check out the Holland Casino, get a relaxing massage or chill out in the world’s first airport park, which uses mixed reality technology to take you far from the madding crowds.

Fly to more than 140 destinations around the globe with KLM from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol – and thanks to the collaboration with Air France since 2004, you can fly to more than 240 destinations worldwide. NEED TO KNOW

NEED TO KNOW The compact size of the metropolis and the efficient public transport make Amsterdam easily accessible. TRAIN The train station at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is located directly below the airport. The journey to Amsterdam Central Station takes just 20 minutes (one-way ticket 4). Every day dozens of trains, including high-speed ones, leave from Amsterdam to other European destinations such as Brussels, Paris and Frankfurt. All parts of the Netherlands can be easily and quickly accessed by train. Tickets are for sale at the NS service desk or ticket machines. www.ns.nl

EASY & AFFORDABLE PARKING WITH P+R Parking in a P+R car park costs only 8 for the first 24 hours and 1 for each additional 24 hours, with a maximum parking time of 96 hours. To be eligible for the discounted P+R parking rate you must travel to the city centre zone by public transport. Please check www.iamsterdam.com/parkandride for more details.

TAXIS Taxis can be handy when travelling to and from the airport, late at night when the trams have stopped running or when you’re running late. Because space in the city centre is limited, taxis cannot stop anywhere they like. Taxi stands, which are identified by blue taxi signs, can be found near tourist hotspots such as Central Station and Leidseplein.

AMSTERDAM MARKETING PUBLIC TRANSPORT P+R Travelling within Amsterdam is straight-forward and convenient. There is an extensive transport network connecting city districts. This includes the tram, metro, bus and (free) ferry. Journeys are paid for with a public transport card (OV-chipkaart). The Visitor Information Centres offer 24- to 96-hour tickets (1-4 days) that entitle you to unlimited travel through Amsterdam. The public transport company (GVB) offers up to 168-hour tickets (1-7 days). Drivers and conductors also sell 1-hour (2.80) and 24-hour (7.50) disposable cards on trams and buses. Most importantly: check in and check out on every journey at one of the card readers. To plan your journey visit: www.9292.nl

COACHES In and nearby the city centre, Amsterdam has over 125 special parking spots for coaches. You can download the ‘Amsterdam for coaches’ brochure at: www.amsterdam.nl/touringcar
