Rubik's Cube

Object Translation Model

The Rubik's cube consists of nine squares on each face, arranged neatly when stationary, but instantly forming various geometric shapes when rotated. This creates a contrast between order and chaos. Extracting elements from its lines, a framework can be constructed to illustrate the geometric transformations of the Rubik's cube.

Continuing from the previous model, this new conceptual model extrapolates the entities under the framework. It consists of stacked massing, each composed of different geometric blocks, mirroring the original connectivity pattern. Starting from a central block, rods are used to connect these modules together.

In contrast to the stacked geometric blocks of the previous model, this design employs a subtractive approach to depict a Rubik's cube-like transformation. It utilizes the chaotic yet ordered contrast of a Rubik's cube, where within the orderly outer frame, spaces are carved out with various geometrical cuts.

Massing generation

The site is located at the Plaza of the Acueducto de Segovia in Spain. The concept applies the principles of a Rubik's Cube to the site, extracting textures and rearranging them into different corresponding geometries. By reorganizing these elements, one can discover various geometric transformations and textures within the site.

The underground space features smooth curves that contrast with the textures on the surface. This underground area connects various buildings above ground, akin to the central circular arc of a Rubik's Cube, facilitating rotation. This creates a phenomenon of squares on the outside and circles on the inside, with the central area linking to the outer cubes.

Creating volumes of varying heights, including high-level walkways, wooden platforms, and sunken plazas, allows people to appreciate the aqueduct bridge from different angles. Additionally, this design facilitates vertical activities happening around the aqueduct bridge.

The blue section of the platform weaves through the waterway bridges, enriching the flow of movement within the architecture. The larger platform spaces provide areas for people to gather, sit on the ground, or even lie down to view the waterway bridges from various angles.

The tall structures are aligned along the central axis, serving as sheltered viewing spaces.

Axis Intersection

The central intersection of the square acts as a visitor service center and serves as the primary entrance to the underground restaurant and cultural lecture spaces.

The yellow section is mostly dedicated to restaurants, the red section serves as a space for cultural lectures, and the blue section is predominantly outdoor, providing an open and versatile space for people to relax and engage in various activities.

House Design

Located in the Zhongxi District of Tainan, this residential building is surrounded by Tainan’s distinctive alleyways. The atmosphere here is tranquil.

The design is intended for a monk who wishes to open a bar and lives with his parents. The father is a flower art teacher, so the residence needs to include a floral greenhouse. The mother plans to run a dessert shop. To meet both commercial and residential needs, the design uses large stairs to divide the interior space into two distinct areas, separating living from business to ensure a clear distinction between public and private zones.

Design concept

One of the unique characteristics of the Zhongxi District is the distinct atmosphere between the main roads and the alleyways. Main roads are busy with heavy traffic, while the alleyways offer a slower pace and a tranquil atmosphere. The paving materials play a significant role in defining these spaces: the red bricks in the alleyways contrast with the more modern paving of the main roads. Similarly, in the design of the space, different paving materials and finishes can be used to delineate and define various spatial qualities.

The Zhongxi District has a rich history, and reconstructions over time, resulting from different periods, including Additionally, some buildings display appearances and contributing to

The owner has three main requirements: a bar, a flower shop, and a dessert shop. They hope the space will have a cohesive design, with furniture that allows for a blurred boundary between different areas. For example, a flower stand could also serve as a table for the dessert shop, or the bar seating area could be shared with the dessert shop. By considering the scale of the furniture, the design aims to achieve spatial continuity.

Spaces Planning

Divide the residence along the center, with the front and upper sections open to the outside, serving as commercial spaces. The lower and rear sections are designed to be more private, functioning as residential areas.

Design Process

I.Stack the primary spatial massing in a front-to-back arrangement, and connect them through the middle.

II.Transform these volumes into floor plates, creating distinct spatial forms.

III.Use large stairs to separate public and private areas, and design visual focal points to enhance the spatial experience.
