Introduction

A

s a designer I would like to create something which is original and different. The product will most probably be available for every age group but specifically aimed for a group of people in the design industry. However everyone can buy or make use of the products!

What to create?

P

ersonally I believe that there are many reasons why someone should create a product in benefit for the client. According to an article I have found there is a list of four physcological aspects people want to experience or solve when buying. Pain or relief of pain Problem or solution to a problem Pleasure Prevention

Initial Idea

T

he idea of creating a suitable kit for designers was quite an original one. The designers nowadays tend to use the computer way too much rather than experimenting with traditional mediums. At this point of time I only had the main idea of creating a kit. The content of this kit was yet to be researched, discovered and most importantly designed.

Inspiration

T

he early typography world must have inspired me to create something from the past. Reviving a particular era in the design history is not an easy task. The love for everything hand made was growing rapidly by time. I believe that I can create some sort of product which can help revive the hand made typography world.

An idea was born

A

fter several research conducted, an idea flowed into my mind. The idea of producing a design kit was very open but making a kit exclusively for the artists to encourage them to design with this calligraphic kit was one of the strongest concept I managed to come up. Coming up with several brand identities was necessary to finally choose the best one which reflects mostly the kit. The three concepts were divided into a minimal, vintage and modern feel. A specific name “Il-Kreattiv� was chosen to represent the brand. It was specifically in Maltese for the reason that creating something which is local and used worldwide might create interesting results.

T

he minimal and modern designs both had different approach in them. The colours palette also reflects the brand identity itself. Keeping the identity clean was ideal as to give the brand an elegant yet classy feel.

Vintage Design

This particular identity was chosen to be the one representing the brand. The colour palette is very minimal with that vintage feel to it. The classy feel can also be seen. The viewer might notice that there is a mixture of calligraphy and modern sans serif type. The purpose of mixing two typographic styles is to give it a touch of modern in it. The K was specially hand crafted by myself taken note of several geometrical elements in order to balance it out.

BRAND GUIDELINES



‘Il-Kreattiv’ is a hand crafted box full of elements that help the individual to create a one of a kind typography piece. The tools established in this box can be used by anyone engaged in the handmade typography world. Bring back the memories when very few technology existed and no computer programs did the job. The box is originally created to import back the hand crafting days.

Logo

T

he calligraphic ‘K’ which is part of the logo is hand made for this particular brand. The logo gives the perception of what the brand is all about and what is the possible result if the right tools are used.

Logo Mark

T

he calligraphic logo was later on transformed in digital taking special care on the dimensions and aesthetics of the letter ‘K’ itself. On the right one can notice the logo mark of the brand. It can be used independently for a better visual result.

Complete Logo

T

he complete logo should be used always this way and there should not be other alterations in order to make it look different. The logo mark is accompanied by “Il-Kreattiv� type with a modern sans serif typeface.

Colour Palette

The colour palette used is very minimal with rich colours that compliment the brand. The blue shows seriousness and class whilst the gold gives the brand a rich and vintage feel.

Il-Kreattiv is based on the typeface Brandon. A sans serif type with round edges to have a cleaner look.

All the type must be based on Mission Gothic. This type was chosen since it is a handmade gothic calligraphic typeface and it compliments the brand nicely.

BRAND APPLICATION



Brand Identity

A

s one can notice in the photo the brand identity can be seen throughout the business cards, letter heads and envelopes. The aim is to have everything identifiable from the logo and branding.

The Kit’s Look

After polishing the brand identity it was now the turn to think about the kit’s look and feel. I wanted to create something with a vintage feel which reflects the product itself. The first material that came into my mind was wood, it is the main material they used in the old days. The products will be in a wooden box which one can easily open and seal with a lock.

Inside Look

As soon as you open the box you will find a thank you card which basically thanks the loyal client for buying one of our original product. Under the card a booklet can be found which basically explains the brand and what it includes. Beneath the special fabric one can find the products professionally packaged and laid by the brand itself. Every piece was carefully chosen in order to satisfy the designer’s need. The package is specifically designed in a vintage manner. It holds two levels were when the individual opens the box it will create suspense as what to find next. The design was kept consistent throughout the whole package.

THE CALLIGRAPHY KIT


N

owadays people are advertising more online rather than print. Facebook is the number one starting point where it allows you to set up a business page. Everyone uses Facebook nowadays therefore I will give a try advertising on it. Secondly I would like to create posters which will be allocated on bus stops and also billboards. I believe that having your own website and store will serve in a good benefit for the customers and brand itself.

Advertising Design

T

he advertising design plays a huge role when it comes to reflecting a particular brand. In my opinion a clean design always works better, I wanted to achieve that clean yet eye catching design apart from the posters which had a totally different approach to them. The posters were designed in a way that they will create suspense. They say that sex sells, what I wanted to create was that try to portray something dirty in the individual mind so that he will make sure to visit the website and after he or she will notice that the poster lead them to the ‘Il-Kreattiv’ website. When it came to website and guerilla advertising I wanted to keep the clean look. Mixing several styles sometimes confuses the consumer. Risking a particular part of the brand for the sake of attracting the people is something completely different unless it holds a lot of thought and research.

Campaign

I

l-Kreattiv is aiming high, creating an awareness campaign might be interesting. Several talks will be conducted as to create awareness on the handmade calligraphic work. The talks are aimed for students, designers and also enthusiasts who can attend. The brand team will also make contact with the design schools where they will offer the chance to educate the students on the handmade type. After the sessions individuals can try the kit where this will encourage them to buy one.

Guerilla Advertising

O

ne of the strongest and most eye catching advertising is probably the guerilla advertising. As part of the IlKreattiv advertising I tried including a simple yet eye catching adverts where you suddenly get the message however you won’t get what the product is unless you go into the website.

Early Poster Ideas

T

he process of the posters was quite long. Finding the right style of design took a lot of research, sketching and actually designing it in digital. I honestly believe that you can have a good sketch or visual in your mind but unless you try it out in digital you won’t be entirely convinced it is going to work. I don’t spend a lot of time on sketching, although I do sketch the basic elements and hierarchy.

The Website

T

he website is one of the most important elements when it comes to the brand. One can find several information on it with a store shipping to worldwide countries. The design was kept minimal keeping in mind that it will be used by people of all age therefore making it easier for the elderly who most of them are not that familiar with the internet. You can also ask questions and read the latest news.

The Facebook Page

O

n the Facebook page one can find useful information on the next talks, future products and also product reviews done by professional in the industry. Facebook is an important source as most of the people will see the brand’s page for the first time on Facebook.

T-shirt Design

T

he employees of the company are encouraged to wear the company’s designed t-shirts in order to achieve indirect advertising. The t-shirts can also be found in the website store where people can buy and wear them. They are kept clean and plain so that individuals can focus on the K. The design also gives a modernvintage look.
