CHAPTER1

1Nowitcametopassinthedayswhenthejudgesruled, thattherewasafamineinthelandAndacertainmanof BethlehemjudahwenttosojourninthecountryofMoab, he,andhiswife,andhistwosons.

2AndthenameofthemanwasElimelech,andthenameof hiswifeNaomi,andthenameofhistwosonsMahlonand Chilion,EphrathitesofBethlehemjudahAndtheycame intothecountryofMoab,andcontinuedthere

3AndElimelechNaomi'shusbanddied;andshewasleft, andhertwosons

4AndtheytookthemwivesofthewomenofMoab;the nameoftheonewasOrpah,andthenameoftheotherRuth: andtheydwelledthereabouttenyears

5AndMahlonandChiliondiedalsobothofthem;andthe womanwasleftofhertwosonsandherhusband.

6Thenshearosewithherdaughtersinlaw,thatshemight returnfromthecountryofMoab:forshehadheardinthe countryofMoabhowthattheLORDhadvisitedhispeople ingivingthembread

7Whereforeshewentforthoutoftheplacewhereshewas, andhertwodaughtersinlawwithher;andtheywenton thewaytoreturnuntothelandofJudah

8AndNaomisaiduntohertwodaughtersinlaw,Go, returneachtohermother'shouse:theLORDdealkindly withyou,asyehavedealtwiththedead,andwithme

9TheLORDgrantyouthatyemayfindrest,eachofyou inthehouseofherhusband.Thenshekissedthem;and theylifteduptheirvoice,andwept

10Andtheysaiduntoher,Surelywewillreturnwiththee untothypeople.

11AndNaomisaid,Turnagain,mydaughters:whywillye gowithme?arethereyetanymoresonsinmywomb,that theymaybeyourhusbands?

12Turnagain,mydaughters,goyourway;forIamtooold tohaveanhusbandIfIshouldsay,Ihavehope,ifIshould haveanhusbandalsotonight,andshouldalsobearsons; 13Wouldyetarryforthemtilltheyweregrown?wouldye stayforthemfromhavinghusbands?nay,mydaughters; foritgrievethmemuchforyoursakesthatthehandofthe LORDisgoneoutagainstme

14Andtheylifteduptheirvoice,andweptagain:and Orpahkissedhermotherinlaw;butRuthclaveuntoher 15Andshesaid,Behold,thysisterinlawisgoneback untoherpeople,anduntohergods:returnthouafterthy sisterinlaw

16AndRuthsaid,Intreatmenottoleavethee,ortoreturn fromfollowingafterthee:forwhitherthougoest,Iwillgo; andwherethoulodgest,Iwilllodge:thypeopleshallbe mypeople,andthyGodmyGod:

17Wherethoudiest,willIdie,andtherewillIbeburied: theLORDdosotome,andmorealso,ifoughtbutdeath parttheeandme

18Whenshesawthatshewasstedfastlymindedtogowith her,thensheleftspeakinguntoher

19SotheytwowentuntiltheycametoBethlehemAndit cametopass,whentheywerecometoBethlehem,thatall thecitywasmovedaboutthem,andtheysaid,Isthis Naomi?

20Andshesaiduntothem,CallmenotNaomi,callme Mara:fortheAlmightyhathdealtverybitterlywithme 21Iwentoutfull,andtheLORDhathbroughtmehome againempty:whythencallyemeNaomi,seeingthe LORDhathtestifiedagainstme,andtheAlmightyhath afflictedme?

22SoNaomireturned,andRuththeMoabitess,her daughterinlaw,withher,whichreturnedoutofthe countryofMoab:andtheycametoBethleheminthe beginningofbarleyharvest

CHAPTER2

1AndNaomihadakinsmanofherhusband's,amighty manofwealth,ofthefamilyofElimelech;andhisname wasBoaz

2AndRuththeMoabitesssaiduntoNaomi,Letmenowgo tothefield,andgleanearsofcornafterhiminwhosesight IshallfindgraceAndshesaiduntoher,Go,mydaughter 3Andshewent,andcame,andgleanedinthefieldafter thereapers:andherhapwastolightonapartofthefield belonginguntoBoaz,whowasofthekindredofElimelech 4And,behold,BoazcamefromBethlehem,andsaidunto thereapers,TheLORDbewithyou.Andtheyanswered him,TheLORDblessthee

5ThensaidBoazuntohisservantthatwassetoverthe reapers,Whosedamselisthis?

6Andtheservantthatwassetoverthereapersanswered andsaid,ItistheMoabitishdamselthatcamebackwith NaomioutofthecountryofMoab:

7Andshesaid,Iprayyou,letmegleanandgatherafter thereapersamongthesheaves:soshecame,andhath continuedevenfromthemorninguntilnow,thatshetarried alittleinthehouse

8ThensaidBoazuntoRuth,Hearestthounot,mydaughter? Gonottogleaninanotherfield,neithergofromhence,but abideherefastbymymaidens:

9Letthineeyesbeonthefieldthattheydoreap,andgo thouafterthem:haveInotchargedtheyoungmenthat theyshallnottouchthee?andwhenthouartathirst,go untothevessels,anddrinkofthatwhichtheyoungmen havedrawn

10Thenshefellonherface,andbowedherselftothe ground,andsaiduntohim,WhyhaveIfoundgracein thineeyes,thatthoushouldesttakeknowledgeofme, seeingIamastranger?

11AndBoazansweredandsaiduntoher,Ithathfullybeen shewedme,allthatthouhastdoneuntothymotherinlaw sincethedeathofthinehusband:andhowthouhastleftthy fatherandthymother,andthelandofthynativity,andart comeuntoapeoplewhichthouknewestnotheretofore 12TheLORDrecompensethywork,andafullrewardbe giventheeoftheLORDGodofIsrael,underwhosewings thouartcometotrust

13Thenshesaid,Letmefindfavourinthysight,mylord; forthatthouhastcomfortedme,andforthatthouhast spokenfriendlyuntothinehandmaid,thoughIbenotlike untooneofthinehandmaidens

14AndBoazsaiduntoher,Atmealtimecomethouhither, andeatofthebread,anddipthymorselinthevinegarAnd shesatbesidethereapers:andhereachedherparchedcorn, andshedideat,andwassufficed,andleft.

15Andwhenshewasrisenuptoglean,Boazcommanded hisyoungmen,saying,Lethergleanevenamongthe sheaves,andreproachhernot: 16Andletfallalsosomeofthehandfulsofpurposeforher, andleavethem,thatshemaygleanthem,andrebukeher not

17Soshegleanedinthefielduntileven,andbeatoutthat shehadgleaned:anditwasaboutanephahofbarley.

18Andshetookitup,andwentintothecity:andher motherinlawsawwhatshehadgleaned:andshebrought forth,andgavetoherthatshehadreservedaftershewas sufficed

19Andhermotherinlawsaiduntoher,Wherehastthou gleanedtoday?andwherewroughtestthou?blessedbehe thatdidtakeknowledgeoftheeAndsheshewedher motherinlawwithwhomshehadwrought,andsaid,The man'snamewithwhomIwroughttodayisBoaz.

20AndNaomisaiduntoherdaughterinlaw,Blessedbehe oftheLORD,whohathnotleftoffhiskindnesstothe livingandtothedead.AndNaomisaiduntoher,Theman isnearofkinuntous,oneofournextkinsmen

21AndRuththeMoabitesssaid,Hesaiduntomealso, Thoushaltkeepfastbymyyoungmen,untiltheyhave endedallmyharvest

22AndNaomisaiduntoRuthherdaughterinlaw,Itis good,mydaughter,thatthougooutwithhismaidens,that theymeettheenotinanyotherfield

23SoshekeptfastbythemaidensofBoaztogleanunto theendofbarleyharvestandofwheatharvest;anddwelt withhermotherinlaw

CHAPTER3

1ThenNaomihermotherinlawsaiduntoher,My daughter,shallInotseekrestforthee,thatitmaybewell withthee?

2AndnowisnotBoazofourkindred,withwhosemaidens thouwast?Behold,hewinnowethbarleytonightinthe threshingfloor

3Washthyselftherefore,andanointthee,andputthy raimentuponthee,andgettheedowntothefloor:but makenotthyselfknownuntotheman,untilheshallhave doneeatinganddrinking.

4Anditshallbe,whenheliethdown,thatthoushaltmark theplacewhereheshalllie,andthoushaltgoin,and uncoverhisfeet,andlaytheedown;andhewilltellthee whatthoushaltdo

5Andshesaiduntoher,AllthatthousayestuntomeIwill do.

6Andshewentdownuntothefloor,anddidaccordingto allthathermotherinlawbadeher

7AndwhenBoazhadeatenanddrunk,andhisheartwas merry,hewenttoliedownattheendoftheheapofcorn: andshecamesoftly,anduncoveredhisfeet,andlaidher down.

8Anditcametopassatmidnight,thatthemanwasafraid, andturnedhimself:and,behold,awomanlayathisfeet

9Andhesaid,Whoartthou?Andsheanswered,IamRuth thinehandmaid:spreadthereforethyskirtoverthine handmaid;forthouartanearkinsman

10Andhesaid,BlessedbethouoftheLORD,my daughter:forthouhastshewedmorekindnessinthelatter

endthanatthebeginning,inasmuchasthoufollowedstnot youngmen,whetherpoororrich

11Andnow,mydaughter,fearnot;Iwilldototheeall thatthourequirest:forallthecityofmypeopledothknow thatthouartavirtuouswoman.

12AndnowitistruethatIamthynearkinsman:howbeit thereisakinsmannearerthanI

13Tarrythisnight,anditshallbeinthemorning,thatifhe willperformuntotheethepartofakinsman,well;lethim dothekinsman'spart:butifhewillnotdothepartofa kinsmantothee,thenwillIdothepartofakinsmantothee, astheLORDliveth:liedownuntilthemorning

14Andshelayathisfeetuntilthemorning:andsherose upbeforeonecouldknowanother.Andhesaid,Letitnot beknownthatawomancameintothefloor

15Alsohesaid,Bringthevailthatthouhastuponthee, andholdit.Andwhensheheldit,hemeasuredsix measuresofbarley,andlaiditonher:andshewentintothe city

16Andwhenshecametohermotherinlaw,shesaid,Who artthou,mydaughter?Andshetoldherallthattheman haddonetoher

17Andshesaid,Thesesixmeasuresofbarleygaveheme; forhesaidtome,Gonotemptyuntothymotherinlaw

18Thensaidshe,Sitstill,mydaughter,untilthouknow howthematterwillfall:forthemanwillnotbeinrest, untilhehavefinishedthethingthisday

CHAPTER4

1ThenwentBoazuptothegate,andsathimdownthere: and,behold,thekinsmanofwhomBoazspakecameby; untowhomhesaid,Ho,suchaone!turnaside,sitdown hereAndheturnedaside,andsatdown

2Andhetooktenmenoftheeldersofthecity,andsaid, SityedownhereAndtheysatdown

3Andhesaiduntothekinsman,Naomi,thatiscomeagain outofthecountryofMoab,sellethaparcelofland,which wasourbrotherElimelech's:

4AndIthoughttoadvertisethee,saying,Buyitbeforethe inhabitants,andbeforetheeldersofmypeople.Ifthouwilt redeemit,redeemit:butifthouwiltnotredeemit,thentell me,thatImayknow:forthereisnonetoredeemitbeside thee;andIamafterthee.Andhesaid,Iwillredeemit.

5ThensaidBoaz,Whatdaythoubuyestthefieldofthe handofNaomi,thoumustbuyitalsoofRuththe Moabitess,thewifeofthedead,toraiseupthenameofthe deaduponhisinheritance

6Andthekinsmansaid,Icannotredeemitformyself,lest Imarmineowninheritance:redeemthoumyrightto thyself;forIcannotredeemit

7NowthiswasthemannerinformertimeinIsrael concerningredeemingandconcerningchanging,forto confirmallthings;amanpluckedoffhisshoe,andgaveit tohisneighbour:andthiswasatestimonyinIsrael.

8ThereforethekinsmansaiduntoBoaz,BuyitfortheeSo hedrewoffhisshoe

9AndBoazsaiduntotheelders,anduntoallthepeople, Yearewitnessesthisday,thatIhaveboughtallthatwas Elimelech's,andallthatwasChilion'sandMahlon's,ofthe handofNaomi.

10MoreoverRuththeMoabitess,thewifeofMahlon,have Ipurchasedtobemywife,toraiseupthenameofthedead

uponhisinheritance,thatthenameofthedeadbenotcut offfromamonghisbrethren,andfromthegateofhisplace: yearewitnessesthisday

11Andallthepeoplethatwereinthegate,andtheelders, said,Wearewitnesses.TheLORDmakethewomanthatis comeintothinehouselikeRachelandlikeLeah,which twodidbuildthehouseofIsrael:anddothouworthilyin Ephratah,andbefamousinBethlehem: 12AndletthyhousebelikethehouseofPharez,whom TamarbareuntoJudah,oftheseedwhichtheLORDshall givetheeofthisyoungwoman.

13SoBoaztookRuth,andshewashiswife:andwhenhe wentinuntoher,theLORDgaveherconception,andshe bareason.

14AndthewomensaiduntoNaomi,BlessedbetheLORD, whichhathnotlefttheethisdaywithoutakinsman,thathis namemaybefamousinIsrael.

15Andheshallbeuntotheearestorerofthylife,anda nourisherofthineoldage:forthydaughterinlaw,which loveththee,whichisbettertotheethansevensons,hath bornhim

16AndNaomitookthechild,andlaiditinherbosom,and becamenurseuntoit.

17Andthewomenherneighboursgaveitaname,saying, ThereisasonborntoNaomi;andtheycalledhisname Obed:heisthefatherofJesse,thefatherofDavid.

18NowthesearethegenerationsofPharez:Pharezbegat Hezron, 19AndHezronbegatRam,andRambegatAmminadab, 20AndAmminadabbegatNahshon,andNahshonbegat Salmon, 21AndSalmonbegatBoaz,andBoazbegatObed, 22AndObedbegatJesse,andJessebegatDavid
