Executive Vice President Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp.

To further propagate the humanitarian work of the Philippine Red Cross, the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation is fully supporting Art for Red, a charity event that features leading Filipino artists whose outstanding works of art are showcased in our publication Filipino Artists in their Studios. In collaboration with Galerie Francesca, the Manila Bulletin invites art connoisseurs and patrons to the Art for Red exhibit at S Maison and at the Manila Hotel on 11-18 April and 1925 April, respectively, to view and appreciate the featured art works. We salute and thank our artists for generously sharing their masterpieces for a truly worthy cause. The Philippine Red Cross provides a beacon of hope in times of distress and calamity by dint of its timely and dependable assistance to those whose lives and wellbeing are severely affected. Red is, indeed, the color of love and affection for those in need. The Philippine Red Cross is the timeless symbol of courage, as it is a bulwark of strength in times of pain and grief. Art for Red is, therefore, a celebration of courage and the indomitable spirit of magnanimity of all the generous artists and lovers of art that are joining hands in this noble endeavor.

Mabuhay!

MILlIE F. DIZON

Senior Vice President SM Malls

It is our honor for S Maison to host the Art for Red special charity art gala and preview of the Filipino Artists in their Studios Volume II in partnership with the Manila Bulletin. Through this week-long exhibit, we will be celebrating and showcasing the ingenuity and vision of the master artists featured in this extraordinary coffee table book. Published by the Manila Bulletin, Filipino Artists in their Studios Volume II features a collection of portraits and artworks of the Philippines’ most prominent and legendary as well as emerging artists at their private workspaces. This is a take-off from Filipino Artists in their Studios, which had a series of “The Artists Gallery” exhibits at the SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, SM Aura Premier, and SM North EDSA The Block. The Art for Red special charity gala, on the other hand, will be for the benefit of the Philippine Red Cross, especially to the families that the organization supports. In behalf of the SM Management, we would like to thank the Manila Bulletin for this opportunity to launch this beautiful book, and to host the special charity art gala. We are looking forward to more cultural partnerships with your company.

RICHARD J. GORDON

Chairman and CEO Philippine Red Cross

Art imitates life. Art can depict an imagery of the daily lives of our people, depicting their emotions, their routines, sufferings, and aspirations. If one has to paint a picture of the Philippine Red Cross, it will certainly paint a huge canvas of different humanitarian activities showing how people’s lives are saved or how sufferings of the most vulnerable are alleviated. For 71 years to date, the PRC has remained steadfast in alleviating human suffering and uplifting human dignity. Through our major services, Disaster Management, Blood, Safety, Health, Welfare, and Red Cross Youth, we have always been committed to serve the most vulnerable, regardless of race, religion or nationality. In a manner of speaking, volunteers may also be regarded as artists. Artists and volunteers have their own messages to convey. Like artists, volunteers aim to deliver messages of hope for those who are downtrodden. Together with our millions of truly committed and compassionate volunteers, the PRC would like to congratulate the Manila Bulletin for successfully staging “Art for Red and to the participating artists who have shared their talents for the benefit of the PRC. By doing so they have now became our partners in building our capacity to provide timely, efficient, and responsive assistance to the most vulnerable, especially during disasters, emergencies, and crisis. We would like to thank everyone who supported this initiative.

Benjie Cabangis demonstrates an affiliation with linear abstraction, reminiscent of an architectural blueprint or diagram. Cabangis is one of the most consistent practicing abstractionists working today and a 1978 Thirteen Artist Awardee, works with a layered aesthetic. His gauze-like variance of hue application techniques removes his practice – and this painting in particular – from the cold geometric abstractions of his peers. He is currently a full professor at the UP College of Fine Arts where he also graduated with a BFA in Painting in 1978.

A painter, sculptor, and installation artist, Magno's career began towards the end of the modernist era of Philippine art. Starting out as an architecture undergraduate at the Mapua Institute of Technology, in 1976, Magno shifted to the Fine Arts program of the Philippine Womens University, under the auspices of its then-director Raul Isidro. In 1980, Magno won first prize at the YMCA Painting Competition for his work called "Bayanihan." This, and his subsequent first solo show at the Greenhills Art Center in 1981, garnered him a reputation for painting hyperrealist paintings of Filipiniana artefacts church interiors, gardens, and antique furnishings - that were heavily fused with a nostalgic sensibility. Making a name for himself with these works, Magno held exhibitions at some of the most important art spaces in the Philippines - including the Ayala Museum in 1990 and the Madrigal Art Center in 1992.
