How do we teach digital drawing for urbanists? The key issue for digital drawing in urbanism is that the operations needed to execute particular drawings means using a variety of software to produce

our images. Teaching digital drawing for urbanists is not about achieving great depth of technical ability in a series of particular software but rather about understanding the basics of tools within software that allow us to move between them. This series is centered around the

C-URL Kits are meant to be similar to DIY or science kits for children. What I’m postulating is that the most effective way to teach technology is treat just like any other tool. Therefore it is important to not place emphases on expertise over the tool but rather the efficacy of applying software to studio projects. C-URL Kits are short interactive lessons meant to passively teach important concepts through the process of making.

“Conflicts. Migrations. Checkpoints.”

Drawing out the stories of migration along Border geographies → #narrative #fictionalcartographies

Migration And The Notion Of ‘Border’ Were The Central Themes To 2017’S Director’s Project. Before the start of the semester, I was on a flight to Varadero when I picked up a copy of National Geographic with my daily coffee. September’s copy explored advancements in the science of health and addiction. The closing article was ‘Borderlands‘ a photo-essay series by Richard Misrach. In a series of photos he documents the physical conditions that separate the United States from Mexico. Many of his photos offer a striking glimpse into the near sculptural quality of the walls that divide these nations.

4/60

Borders are a fascinating point of contention for anyone interested in the intersection of politics and design. So often is it forgotten that many of these walls are mere physical manifestations of sociopolitical thought. Even borders that we perceive as natural such as those created by watershed are lines we draw to rationalize and categorize what exists on a complex spectrum. Anuradha Mathur & Dilip da Cunha explore this in

their work – ‘Soaked: Mumbai in Estuary’ (2009). Misrach’s article also explores the relationship between border and water. In the context of the Sonoran Desert, access to water determines the fate of those with the grit to cross. Over 3,000 attempts at crossing have resulted in death in the heat of the desert. Amidst or despite political tension, the Water Station project by Humane Borders has voluntarily placed 55-gallon barrels of water along the border – operating a vast network of life-saving water posts. In a hybrid style of new and old cartography, Route 45 imagines and dramatizes the coordination it might take to cross the border – reliant on these plastic bastions of life. In the end, questioning how we’ve come from the unwavering trapped lightning of liberty herself to these hollow tubs in the sand. You can find out more at: https://

Creating a platform for economic developers to communicate urban-scale information and metrics for communities and investors. → #criticalcartography #triptych #artifact #atlas

Economic developers face many challenges. One challenge that we can address is the lack of the neccessary tools to visually communicate to potential clients the various assets that are available for purchase.

6/60

My roles as a GIS+Design research assistant with was to establish visual legibility, management of data, synthesis of new data, and marketing materials that will be used to secure additional funding for the project. Our team was composed of architectural designers, computer scientists, and UX/UI designers.

↑ Cartographic logic of “OEED Layer Styles” One of my first recommendations was to a systematize maps to break down the application in a variety of thematic “layers”. This would not only improve application performance but also provide the framework for the project to grow modularly as

Maps is one of the most important data-visualization tools in planning and design. However, they are also useful in telling complex narratives that data and prose cannot.

↓ Istanbul Networks This map takes cues on old ideas of the city as analogous to the body. Intended to render the landscape as flesh-like and amorphous.

New narratives for the frigid extraction landscapes of Yellowknife → #unity #augmentedreality #mapbox #mapping

Sub-Arc(h)tic is a speculative researchdesign project developed through a landscape urbanism seminar This project explores the relationship between economic potential, infrastructural technologies, extraction landscapes, and the role of urbanism and architecture. This two part project first documents the existing economic conditions of 16/60

Yellowknife and then proposes a unique architectural/urban typology that can diversify the economy, provide food, and produce energy. What is proposed is stacked geothermal, data centre, and green house that creates a self-returning system that is of economic and social value.

18 / 80

TOWER AND BASE Final components that model the structure. SITE VARIABLES Components to control the complexity and size of the structure. UTILITY Final components that model the structure.

The Sub-Arc(h)tic response project is not meant to be a mere one-off site specific response. Rather it is meant to present a solution that can be replicated across the extraction landscape. It is parametrically designed so that the entire structure emerges out of a series of test variables including: (a) mineshaft-size, (b) available land area, and (c) desired tower size.

19 / 70

20 / 80

→ Open-Infrastructure The success of a “modular” building of this size is predicated on if people can freely access the structure’s plans & schematics. Open-sourcing the design of the structure is critical to the success of the project in the long-term.

Series 002 - Geometric Modularity

↑ Node & Edges The function of the primary unit as a source of energy, food, and work can be augmented with secondary units that can grow with the building. Modularity is important to allowing the building and it’s program to be resilient to the rapidly changing economy.

into a system for analysis, allocation, and design. In doing so, this project sees the potential for urban design to be an act of coordinated intervention. It approaches city as both the whole and the fragment.

A low-fi prototype using geolocated augmented reality apps for gathering data in Los Angeles → #unity #augmentedreality #mapbox #mapping

Bellhop taps into the various streams of data that make up our geospatial world. Information such as land use type, land value, proximities and other metrics are brought together into one package that generates a geospatial bound AI entity: the Bellhop. 28/60

These entities populate key locations throughout the city. Ultimately, creating a network of digital beings across our cities. These digital beings gather data through “normal” conversation and derive conclusions that can be used for refining generative design solutions.

DEVELOPMENT & PITCH

The value proposition is in being able to gather “dark” or unaccounted-for urban information through passive interactions (conversations).→ Designer and Planner Issues/Needs: 1. Lack of High Fidelity Data 2. Out-of-date Analysis

Expected Application Core Features: 1. Voice Interaction (ex. IBM Watson) 2. Data Storage (ex. Sheets/FTP) 3. Geolocated AR Objects (Mapbox)

To deliver a final presentable pitch we focused specifically on developing as much in Unity as possible to avoid post-production video editing.
