A pragmatic, buildable and replicable urban garden prototype for vacant sites across Toluca Lake, LA. → #landscape #park #garden

The toluca lake garden prototype is a small scale design proposal for the Toluca Lake Community that turns unused land into urban farming units.

The design uses an open design language that takes advantage of physical site conditions and seasonal solar conditions.

Chamartin has faced decades of proposals that have not come to fruition. Amidst these proposals was the global recession of 2008. Many of these proposals are centered around a generic mixedused develoment. This project instead proposes that Madrid takes advantage

of the size and location of Chamartin to create the worlds largest Expo hall. This expo-station hybrid would become a new economic engine for the city of Madrid.



URBAN STRATEGY

This project leverages the rapid expansion of infrastructure across Spain pre-2008. This proposal re-affirms the power of events to drive development and civic identity →

Our research revealed that any strategy for Chamartin needed to reflect a broader economic strategy. Madrid is the geometric and cultural heart of Spain. Chamartin is poised to become one of the most important trainstations in Spain. We proposed the world’s largest exhibition hall to be hosted on this site - creating the worlds first expo-station hybrid in a city with one of the densest transit networks in the world.

SYSTEMS & PLAN

Chamartin is as long as Central Park in New York. Thinking of the site as an interlocking system of neighborhoods with specific identities and functions is important to managing potential growth plans.

THE PROGRAM

↑ Vacant Site Matrix: Determining usecombinations based on key parameters. These sites are then fed into a generative system that translates their contextual data (i.e. proximity to transit, etc) into architectural proposals. ↓ “Combinatorial” Modelling as a generative design techniique allows us to create formagnostic models that can quickly iterate and yet maintain key schematic metrics.

Where does urbanism start? The Feedmill Innovation District is a suburban master plan whose scope spans across the regional, the neighborhood, and the street scale.

Drawing upon techniques used in developing science fiction, the design forecasts and explores the urban impact of emerging technologies and social trends. The design argues for a practice of urbanism which engages multiple scales of intervention, between fictional and factual narratives, and weaves in questions of energy, responsibility, and power.

Driverless Streets redefines the urban interface between Driver and Pedestrian Infact, to call these machines cars or vehicles prevent us from being able to see them for what they could become. What I propose is a street system that embraces the car of the future as “invisible transportation”. Driverless vehicles will change everything. This is no understatement. Not only our daily commutes but our building typologies, street logic, and landscape composition will need to adapt to the new “perfect” driver.

Urban play becomes a common daily occurrence. The street becomes a modular system that can reconcile efficiency and play. Modules can either be sponsored by adjacent stores or can be owned by the local administrations. They can either reflect corporate brands or be changed seasonally by local government.
