Co m p a ny P r o f i l e Eagle K-wear started its origins as a clothes-manufacturing firm in 1958 and since then has built its reputation in the clothing-manufacturing sector in Malta producing and manufacturing a variety of knitted garments. Formerly known as Eagle Knitwear Company Limited, the company was set up by the Aquilina brothers, Frank, the late Charles and the late Emmanuel, in partnership with Mr Humphries with 12 employees. Within 9 years staff increased to 165. In 1967 operations moved into centrally located and larger offices and factory premises, where it still operates.

Throughout their career, Frank Aquilina and his brothers always sought to build a reputation for integrity, teamwork and commitment. The company also started exporting garments to the United Kingdom, Germany, Cyprus and Fiji. The values remain true today and are the reason Eagle K-wear is further expanding its business beyond Malta and venturing into the international market. This is a milestone which all of us at Eagle K-wear are very proud of. In the 1970’s, the company continued to expand, investing in state-of-the-art machinery, operating on a 24-hour shift basis. Eagle Knitwear was the first company in Malta to export to Poland. The company started to concentrate on fashion wear, with a fully equipped sample room complete with inhouse designers. Garments were produced for prestigious labels in London like ‘Mary Quant’, ‘Miss Selfridge’, ‘Jean Alley’, ‘Carré’ and ‘South Sea Bubbles’. We also exported garments under private labels to Sweden, Switzerland and Belgium. In the 1980’s the company achieved a pioneering milestone by exporting to the USSR, Japan, Australia, Germany and Holland. Another milestone was achieved when the company started manufacturing all the ‘Pepsi’ brand wear fashion clothing exported to the Benelux countries, as well as Greece.

At Eagle K-wear the customer is at heart in everything we do Frank Aquilina’s son and present managing director of the company, Alex Aquilina, transformed the company into a work wear clothing industry leader producing a large variety of quality garments and knitwear for domestic requirements. Today, Eagle K-wear is synonymous as the leading brand in custom-made uniform and work wear clothing, and continues to diversify and enhance its portfolio of products and services to ensure an efficient and reliable ‘one-stop’ shop for bespoke clothing designs to its clients. Our position and strength enables the company to provide additional value to our clients and opportunities for our employees. The strong combination of over fifty two years of expertise in the textile and clothing industry, packaged with additional personalised services are a key component of the company’s ability to provide additional value to clients. Eagle K-wear offers favourable rates to clients and offers a superior tailoring and fashionable clothing design concept. Eagle K-wear provides unique benefits to clients by leveraging its tremendous purchasing power. The company buys direct from manufacturers of raw materials receiving preferred pricing, quality fabrics, thus offering customers direct service and improved delivery timing.

• The Maltese are portrayed as descendants of ancient Carthaginians and Phoenicians. The Phoenicians colonised the islands around 1000 BC. • In 736 BC, they were occupied by the Greeks who called the colony ‘Melita’, later coming under the control of Carthage (400 BC) and then of Rome. • In AD 60, the Maltese islands were visited by the Apostle Saint Paul, who is said to have been shipwrecked on the shores of the appropriately-named ‘Saint Paul’s Bay’. • Among the rulers that followed, one can highlight that the Arabs had a great influence on the culture and language of the inhabitants. This is why the Maltese language is referred to as a Semitic one, and is closely related to Arabic. • In 1530, the islands were given by Spain to the Order of Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, a militant monastic order now known as the ‘Knights of Malta’, who withstood a full-blown siege by the Ottoman Turks in 1565 (at that time considered to be the greatest non European military power), an event which remained strongly imprinted in the memory of the Maltese and their history. • Following this, fortifications were increased especially in the inner-harbour area, where the new city of Valletta, named after the great Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette, was built. • Napoleon conquered Malta in 1798 on his way to his expedition to Egypt, establishing an administration controlled by his nominees. • In 1800, the island became a British protectorate, whereas in 1814, as part of the Treaty of Paris, Malta officially became part of the British Empire, and was used as a merchant shipping way station and fleet headquarters. Malta played an important role during World War II, owing to its proximity to axis shipping lanes. The bravery of the Maltese people during the second Siege of Malta moved HM King George VI to award the George Cross to Malta on a collective basis on 15 April 1942 ‘to bear witness to a heroism and devotion that will long be famous in history’. • After the war, and after a short period of political instability, Malta was granted independence on September 21, 1964 (Independence Day). Under its 1964 constitution, Malta initially retained Queen Elizabeth II as Queen of Malta, with a Governor-General exercising executive authority on her behalf. • On December 13, 1974 (Republic Day), Malta became a republic within the Commonwealth, with the President as head of state. • Malta joined the European Union on May 1, 2004.
