Be able to present factual copy and imagery for an identified purpose in an appropriate format Introduction: This task will develop your understandings of the qualities required for factual writing in different contexts Brief: The aim of this assignment is to establish a topic to address when approaching producing factual copy for print and additionally to define who the target audience of the article will be.

Part 1 – Topic choice and audience research • Obtain a topic to focus your article on from the Guardian Newspaper website http://www.guardian.co.uk/ • Using illustrations and text create an audience profile mind map diagram outlining their key characteristics - Include age, education, interests for example - how often they’re in the kitchen, how often they go to restaurants, whether they’re interested in trendy foods, whether they travel, have kids, take classes, etc. Doing so will help you focus your factual article.

Part 2 – Create a brief pitch for factual production Your pitch needs to reflect and build upon the research that you have conducted, create a Prezi or Powerpoint depicting the category and topic and target audience of your factual article. Focus on • • • •

Part 3 - Obtain research and images from appropriate sources •

Obtain either first hand research (in the form of an interview) or second hand research in the form of using secondary sources (websites, books, reports)

Create a sheet detailing key facts and quotes that you might use, giving the sources for that information.

Obtain original images and choose up to five images to include in your final print production, edit the images in Photoshop to reflect the professional standard that you are aspiring to create.

Part 4 – Production of factual copy • Using a standardized format produce a first draft of your factual copy article – 1000 words • Condense down to 750 words • Final draft 500 words • Demonstrate and depict the text editing process in the form of a developmental timeline. http://allaboutwriting.org/?p=20

Part 5 – Layout Drafts • SKETCHED DRAFT - Sketch out a draft layout, scan and import into your portfolio. • FIRST DRAFT - Produce a first draft of a layout based upon your sketched draft, annotate using textboxes and focus on the conventions of your format, how your layout will appeal to your audience. • FINAL DRAFT – Present a final layout draft, annotate with notes about the key features that you have changed.

Part 6 – Combine Factual Copy and Sourced Images Building on the drafts that you created in the previous task, develop a complete layout of your factual article combining –

Present your finished factual article in an appropriate format demonstrating consideration of the appropriate conventions of your media format, as well as demonstrating innovation and imagination in the presentation of your article and its layout.
