EDITORIAL Time flies when we perform the activities that we found pleasurable and recreational, that are how three months have passed sin the last number. This time we present somewhat contrasting articles, in one side a kind of illustration closer to the comics than the conceptual images of the designer/illustrators and in the other side messages from a different culture made in a different way and that perhaps in our context would not work in the same way. Where are we going with this? Only to make visible that design is universal and not-elitist. There is worldwide and is practiced differently depending on the culture and the kind of audience it is directed. Therefore, we can say that there is not bad design, simply that it could be functional or, it not looks functional because is not part of our particular context. What it is exactly the same or should be, is the prevailing necessity in the designer to express the messages in the best possible way, to passionate for what he does, to use his brain looking for original, audacious solutions and experiment all the reach sources.

The design research The first time that I heard the term was a couple of years, and the first instance that came to my mind was the process that we carry out the design project, either in a poster, a web site, typography, etc. However my idea was far away from the real meaning. Indeed it is an analysis, but not directly from the process to generate the design object, but to analyze that process, measure the ranges of the results, identify if the used methodology was the best, if a long-term the design object is still effective and can be reinterpreted in the process for similar objects, the benefit that the costumer win with the use and if it contributes to the design discipline. We are talking about a design research.

To understand this better we can make a comparison with a research conducted in a scientific way, for example: we study in specific the influence of the viscosity from a lubricant in the increasing production of a bearings maker. According with our research and the field tests get that to higher viscosity less friction between the machines that make bearings, therefore require less maintenance costs, lower spending on the purchase of spare parts and a significant gain in the processing time. This generates large profits for the company, less expenses and then the inversion in the studies of how produce more viscous lubricants will be increased.

This is exactly that concerns to the design research. That through the exploration of processes, objects, hypothesis and methodologies of the discipline we reach a measurable result and as a result rationalizable with which we can improve o build procedures for the development of the design knowing the possible result, to discard or upgrade theories based on the present public perception, updating the bibliography, investment gain (nowadays almost null) in the development of the technical and pedagogic infrastructure to continuing with these investigations and increase the human side of the design to improve the quality of life.

About this theme, Sheila Pontis graphic designer from the faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning from University of Buenos Aires points the existence of different approaches in the analysis of design practices such as design. These approaches are: Research design. The first approach is purely theoretical and literary, the whole information is from bibliographical sources (books, articles, publications) and contrasted between the authors. The studies that use this methodology are considered the most common and simple. Within this group can be included historical research, research about esthetic and perceptive aspects and a research into various theories about design. Numerous studies using this approach can be used as references.

8

Research trhought design. Second methodology can be defined as a mix methodology, which combines the theoretical research with practical actions, forming a cycle of trial and error. The theories about this kind of research are not testing in an independent way and then applied to practice, they were corroborated by practice and then reworked, being this a process that evolves from the general to more specific. Its main focus is the realization of a practical research (action research), constituting a more complex methodology as above. Mainly have three stages: search for research materials (raw material and background), development work (field works), and applied research (corroboration of theories). Design research. third methodology is consider the most complex because involves the resolution of final prototypes that contribute with new knowledge to the discipline. That means foreground is presented visually besides to written. A design research can combine more than one methodology, always taking into account what you want to investigate. http://foroalfa.org/es/articulo/208/Que_es_y_que_implica_la_investigacion_en_Diseno

The approaches that we used will be given by the kind of object of our research y will be election of each of us. We can say that each of us has done at time design research, focus of course in an specific communication problem, which we have not measure yet, due that once is done we finish the relationship with the project and move to the next. There is where the researcher work starts, that these events do not stay in the fact of realization but subject to a scientific verification able to provide measurable result and hence useful for our professional work. Is therefore a design research, an area where exist professional improvement as work in a freelance way, however are few the institutions where this is important, where are programs that is consider and with the necessary investment and the adequate infrastructure. The responsibility is in hands of the practitioners, to allow time of investigate, and analyze if our work and other is appropriate, follow rules, is measurable, has an impact in the society and trough this analysis propose and expose results for the design community, which are convenient for all and can make a change in the different authority levels. Then we will see that one day we will wake up with teams of specialized researchers in this area, masters and doctorates focus to the exploration and innovation of the graphic media.

OSCAR GONZĂ LEZ LOYO I am aware of artwork since I was five years old, because my father works with the comics since the fifties and the house always was full of painters, illustrators and cartoonist, with whom I interact since I was a child. My inspiration is my father, HĂŠctor Macedo, Jack Kirby, Moebius, John Buscema, John Romita Sr. and Jr., Frazetta and thousands more.

12

The technique makes the master Speaking of illustration techniques I use mainly the ink with brush and nib, pencil, watercolors and nowadays MAC. The type of work is that asks you the kind of technique to use, in the case of comics the drawing and inking require master the nib and brush to make thick and thin lines, mastering the nib will take three or five years. Many contemporary artist shun the nib because is so hard to master and that make us till certain point quotable between the companies and publishers.

The technology is very important because you cannot stay in the past, but contradictorily here in K! it is a law can work with the traditional techniques as we have not computers, to not undermine the traditionally artistry.

The creative process My work is selling in editorials, all kind of companies and television; to develop a project depends from one or two months calmly and in an emergency to one week‌..we always fight for two months. Here in ¥Ka-Boom! We are twelve members of base and according with the work is divided and is very variable, sometimes just one artist make the stroke and ink, sometimes one make the stroke, other ink and other colors, all depends, sometimes because of the time all are involved in the same project. The creative process can be variable, depending from the work, but is taken from this points: concept, objective, the brand, the logo, the universe, the characters (motleys, radio spots, advertising or commercial animation, merchandising, hence all that is printed, animate o characterized: human, animal or amorphous). The process is divided in four stages: Wandering stage. In this stage we do not spare in forms and figures, since at this point, we are going to eliminate and suggest bold, traditional or modern designs that pleasant the costumer, the implicated persons, and us the experts

iin the design of fantasy characters and science fiction applied in a commercial product or advertising. Is in this creation moment when we apply the semiotic. Once that is founded the genre and style, with permission from the client, proceed to develop the final design and the color psychology tests. In this last point the sheet primary model will be develop (expressions, poses, attitudes, views and the comparative heights), which will be serve as art guides for application in art stores: comics, packaging, posters, advertisements, general advertising, animation, etc. In case of need extra poses to the models sheet, the client will ask to ¡Ka-Boom¡ studio, the specific poses. The creation of the concept, the universe, the characters y they psychology, will be the base and the inexhaustible fount of possibilities to commercial development or advertising of a product.

Seeking to save the world When you look for a client the first thing that you have to do it is show professionalism, quality and effectiveness, this can delay depending from the illustrator, but little by little this characteristics are leading the way and then you do not seek, the client finds you. Of course in our early days we look for clients and works, but in certain way despite of the necessity we always thing that is very important to select our clients, should not be accepted from all and overall you should not squander…. !Sure¡ if you prove that your work is in the quality standards. 14

I have a very subjective formula, if the client fails the psychological test that we realize, we do not accept because we will have many troubles, it is a spiritual test, where we can notice if the client knows how handle the form, the chart with the sound, if a client critics the fantasy and charge us a pet for a child product, we refuse.

Evil never rests, plans and provides your struggles Whenever you go to negotiate a gig, if you ca, get advice with an attorney that knows about business negotiations and copyright. Before to begin a job and according with the contributions, not work if there is no 50 or 60% NON-REFUNDABLE advance, and a contract that testify the benefits and obligations from both sides, but watch out, the contract have certain little word and colons that can mark the difference that they trick you or not, in spite of. The client wants everything for yesterday, here in K¥ we are not subject to the costumer’s times, but the one that takes to do a job with quality and speed that is not the same, because when a costumer do not respect our way of work, it is preferable don’t accept, so establish your real time, but once that you established it meet them for review and delivery. Every time that you deliver a job if it is of sweatshop and advertising and you create a pet for a brand o client, you must be conscious that even you are the author and give the rights, by law you will never lose it, although many will say otherwise, but here the inconvenient is that you make it by charge for an enterprise, there is no sense fight for it if you want to get a benefit in the future, but you can ask for credits or recommendations

The ember magazine

15

in an editorial level and ask that you will be the first option to develop more job with that pet, set a good price for your job. And before to sign a contract or get a deal, never leave work samples even when the client requires it, clarifies that all the material will be delivered once that you have a contract, sign of the design acceptation and the 60% in advanced (remember NON-REFUNDABLE). Never leaves copies of anything before to sign a contract, never sign without check the contract, do not show arrogant or submissive, never be a bootlicker and remember the country to Rome, do as the Romans do, once that you are inside you can broke the rules and innovate, but if at the beginning you act like a jester, you may lose.

Do not fall into the dark side Many times our competence are the artist that charge less and sell themselves for five pesos in order to get the job, something good is that the customer notice that and after to round some colleagues, some of those worn back and they have to paid the same price or according with the normal increments.

The force is on your side, use it¡ Before to delivered an agreed job. Send it to yourself by mail in a envelope and check that in the post office they put the official seal, it does not matter if there is in the same colony to your home and never open that envelope, in case that the client tricks you before to paid, you can fight in a trial without the register in the INDAUTOR. If it is a charge job you will always kept the moral rights but you must be conscious that it belongs to the client and give the rights with the suggest of to be the first option to kept working with the client and your characters. The progress in the work depends that you become necessary and develop things that no one else can do, with quality and speed, that characteristic will open doors in editorials, companies and media.

Las enseñanzas del maestro the master’s teaching My style has been influenced by Osamu Tesuka, Hanna-Barbera, Disney. In order to find an own style it doesn’t need to be search, but let it arises alone, if you force it you become somebody’s clone and lose originality. For example my style is naïf, light, universal and not-elitist. For that reason always take into account that the illustrator is mad man that makes others dream and fantasize, someone that in a white surface defines the feeling that other do not have the ability to produce. The best advised that I can give is that search for the historical memory in your field, appreciate to the pioneers and do not underestimate the happened fashion, if you have an universal style, you will never go out of fashion and over all be updating of all, carton, drawing, realistic, etc. And never leave the fantasia and daydreaming, because are important for our profession, and more than the drawing ability.

When I was in primary school I won my first camera in an academic competition, in high school it becomes in a hobby and in the university I bought one with the BUAP scholarship. I used to borrow a camera. Taking pictures makes me happy since I remember.

A personal message When I make a shot I know that something is there, but people do not. The details, the concepts that the image can show, as well as the ideas and feelings, beside to fulfill its function. “I think that is a common photographers characteristic. Each one reflect their style

Reflection’s of the client needs When you make a job by charge you have to adapt to the client needs, you improvise, no matter how, you have to do the job, adapt the time and satisfy adequately the project needs.

21

Between methods and prevention My way of work define the client needs, technically is necessary provide things such as batteries, the light, the sky, etc. You have to research, for example visit the place once or two times before the shot day. When I work in a personal Project the methodological processes arises from the reading. Trough the reading I inspire myself, and then I do my research in books, magazines, internet and consultants to other photographers. After tests where I see the results of the research in the application. A Project just meets me when it moves me emotionally, when I feel made.

Between the design and the photo The photography it’s free. Maybe because for me it’s easy, so I feel it. Explain the justification it’s simpler, every picture it’s unique and unrepeatable. Sometime you have to be flexible with the time, due to the process isn’t as complex as in the design.

Talking about technology To me is very important. I don’t demerit the hand or traditionally work, I appreciate; but the use of these techniques saves time and provides quality in less process. Not vital of course, remember what they say: “the devil knows more for being old than by evil”. You most know be cleaver.

Travel in subways is a common activity in many countries, but sometimes results an experience that comes from the painful to the bizarre and at the end can be an unpleasant trip and even stressful for some people because of the attitudes and activities that some passengers share with those how share the wagon with them. And there is somebody that was not been taking as a pillow because the partner beside starts to fall sleeping or for example have to hear the song from the music player that use the speakers instead of headphones. These are some examples that most of us have been happened. Its hard try to indicate to the persons how they have to be without being rude, that is why the subway in Tokyo prefers to persuade their users using messages cleverly represented by illustrations that show us this behaviors in a comic way that make the users reflect about this attitudes in the Public transport. “Mata Yaroo”, “let’s do it again”, is a campaign encouraged by the Tokyo’s subways thanks to the illustrator Bunpei Yorifumi promotes with the users of the system practice the good manners in a effectively way, with the collocation of new illustrations every month that represents a different activity and that the passengers relate in a direct way with negative attitudes inside the subway and then they try to avoid it to make it in an adequate place.

The social networks 1st part

Recently the concept of social network has become popular in the common vocabulary and is very normal talk about them, heard in the news of them and as a consequence be part at least in one of them. But, before this boom in the social phenomena, meone we have access to his data based and connect we know the existences of the social networks or we re- us with them for our own benefit, that can be work, lated them with the internet? sentimental or something else. First we are going to indicate that the social network have always existed, of course, basically a social network is a group of people with interests and common characteristics, like sports, ideological, familiar, scholar or commercial interests. However the networks in the real world are limited by reasons such as geography, language, prejudice, etc.

Now, in the past the social network where know as virtual communities, which were characterized for the interchange of information trough blogs, forums, email or chat.
