The acquisition will give scope to Chemique to offer a full industrial adhesive package into both their existing and new market sectors.
Combilift’s New Man for North of the Borders
Anthony Rooney appointed new product manager responsible for Scotland and Northern Ireland
Combilift Ltd, the leading global manufacturer in the long-load handling sector has appointed a new Product Manager responsible for Scotland and Northern Ireland. Anthony Rooney will be adding support to current Combilift dealerships in these areas, where demand for the Combilift range of 4way handling solutions continues to defy the current market situation. Anthony has been with Combilift for almost eight years now. He moved from an initial role in the production of the trucks to a four year stint opening up new markets in the USA, before moving back closer to home to take on his current position. “Sales in Scotland grew by over 100% last year, and I expect this to continue throughout 2009,” says Anthony. “The oil industry is a buoyant sector, and our larger trucks with up to 14 tonne capacities are particularly suited for offshore applications. In Northern Ireland I have identified increasing requirements for the Combilift range in manufacturing and engineering sectors. In general, customers appreciate the cost effectiveness of the 3machines-in-1 Combilift system rather than operating a fleet of multiple types of forklifts.” Anthony has also made some initial sales of the recently introduced Combi-CB, and believes that this will prove to be a very popular model in future: “The Combi-CB has been specifically designed for handling a mixture of long and palletised loads, so if you thought that the Combilift range was not for your

operation, you may need to think again and get in touch!” Anthony can be contacted on 0779 439 7546. Tel: 00353 47 80500 Email: info@combilift.com www.combilift.com
Veneer Manufacturer Extends Range of Innovative Wooden Surfaces Danzer Group, the world’s largest producer of hardwood veneers, has acquired Reholz GmbH, Kesselsdorf, near Dresden, Germany. The company will be integrated into Danzer Group under its current management. Reholz has developed an internationally unique, patented process for moulding veneers three-dimensionally without cracking. With 3D veneers, it is possible to achieve stable moulds – for example for the furniture and automotive industries – that are resistant to breakage or bending. Both the structure of the wood and texture of the veneer are unchanged in the process. By acquiring Reholz GmbH, Danzer Group will be able to offer its customers veneers in 3D versions for moulded parts and coatings. Customers can use the innovative wooden surfaces to produce high-grade and unique quality products that stand out significantly from the competition. International demand for 3D veneers is increasing – especially from the furniture industry for chairs and rounded furniture fronts and from the automotive industry for use in interiors. The Wood Awards 2008 The award winners were revealed at a party hosted by the Carpenters Company in the City of London recently. The winners of the new ‘Best Use of Panel Products’ award was the Taylor Library of Corpus Christi College in Cambridge which showcased fine examples of European oak veneers bonded into a variety of wood-based panel substrates. The award was in recognition of the increasing importance of materials such as MDF, OSB, plywood and particle board. Geoff Rhodes, specialist in the wood panel product sector, former president of the TTF and marketing and business development director of Coillte Panel Products (manufacturers of Medite and SmartPly) who are commercial sponsors of The Wood Awards, added: "This special recognition is a great way to improve the understanding of wood panels products and to showcase their adaptability and quality, particularly as nearly a quarter of this year’s Wood Award entries used panel products:

Combat the Recession with Budget PR Service Long-standing specialist PR and advertising agency, Wellesley Publicity Services, headed up by John ‘JB’ Burrows, is currently operating a low-cost Budget PR Service for businesses involved in the manufacture, sales and installation of woodworking machinery, panel processing systems, tooling, waste extraction equipment, finishing systems, furniture fittings, materials and components. “I’ve been working in this industry since 1972 and have witnessed at first-hand the devastating results of two previous recessions,” said John Burrows. “However, I do feel that during this present economic downturn, when new business is even harder to come by, it is vitally important that companies keep their customers fully informed of the products, machinery and cost-effective services that are currently available to them and which could enhance production techniques and lead to increased sales.” He continued: “This ideal of keeping their name in the forefront of the industry can be effectively achieved by maintaining a regular editorial presence in the trade press.” In this light and in order to assist companies in their endeavours, Wellesley Publicity Services is now offering a Budget PR and advertising service at special recessionary rates. This covers the preparation and distribution of new product press releases, installation articles and other newsworthy stories, on a one-off basis, at flexible low-cost fees, throughout the duration of this recession. Better Buy The Biesse Group are world renowned for delivering top quality products with a superb price/performance ratio on their Industrial
portfolio of products like the
Techno & Rover Series introduced more than 30 years ago. Over the last few years they have also been concentrating their efforts on building the same reputation with their BiesseArtech brand. The range brings the larger machine technology and quality to smaller companies who thought that they could never afford it, but still need all the same capabilities as their larger competitors. The BiesseArtech range really does fit this requirement giving an excellent price / performance ratio and therefore small companies the real chance to compete.
he BIesseArtech philosophy and success is attributed to producing the highest quality products affordable to everyone who appreciates the importance of buying the best that you can afford. Following the processes in a factory, the line up consists of a beam saw, through-feed edge-banding range for straight edge work, another series for shaped and awkward panel work. The drilling range is made up of the versatile multi spindle boring machines, including dowel insertion and for the CNC machining centres there is the Skill series both in flat-table and pod table formats. Sanding is covered with two ranges depending on the number

of belts required. For the clamping of rigid carcasses we have the Cosmo clamp. This portfolio is a complete and comprehensive offering for the smaller factory. We must stress, that these machines are all manufactured in Biesse’s production plants in and around Pesaro. Being a global organisation The Biesse Group consists of more than 10 manufacturing companies involved with wood, plastic, metal, stone and glass sectors. The total employed workforce, throughout the world exceeds 2000. The UK operation, Biesse Group UK Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Biesse Spa, was formed in 1992 to service and support this vital market for Biesse. From a purpose built 45,500 sq ft premises based in Daventry, Northants we operate a sales, service and spare parts organisation numbering more than 40 people. The building houses an excellent fully functioning showroom with training facilities for customers and employees alike. Our free telephone help desk, available to all customers, uses the most advanced HDA (Help Desk Application) software, enabling us to record all breakdowns, ensuring the shortest possible down time, and keep a history of the resolution applied. Whilst the machines are incredibly reliable inevitably spare parts are required. From our UK spare parts department we ship nearly 90% of all requested parts on the same day from our £2,000,000.00 (£2 Million) stockholding. Biesse UK put a lot of effort during 2008 into setting up a relationship with Wadkin who were appointed our sole distributor for the BiesseArtech range for the UK in June 2008. In the same period Paul Ambrose joined Biesse UK as the BiesseArtech Brand Manager. In the following months we decided to finish our relationship with Wadkin following their recent restructuring. appointment Paul commented “I am delighted to be working for The Biesse Group. I find them both very professional and highly efficient in the manufacture of high quality production machinery. I can see the benefits of the Kaizen production methodology that has been implemented by the involvement of Porsche Consulting over the past two years” says Paul. “This is giving us a big advantage during this difficult economic climate.“ Quality is one of the things I looked at before joining Biesse and am very happy to be introducing the BiesseArtech range to the UK market. Another vital point for me was after sales support and I had underestimated how much Biesse had invested in making this their number one priority knowing how important this is to the customer and a key factor to consider when purchasing this type of machinery. I was always astounded at the products that the Biesse group brought to the market which in many cases were way ahead of the competition in terms of innovation and build quality. Now seeing things from the inside, I understand why.” “Being made by BiesseArtech, you get a better buy.” So, if you are looking for a quality machine, well built and fully equipped at a sensible price, contact Paul directly: Mobile: 07852-774297 Tel: 01327-300366 Email: paul.ambrose@biesse.co.uk

ULTRACUT’ is a software which revolutionises the way work is done on classic machines because it is the first and only one on the market which uses graphics that are updated in real time to guide the operator step by step during each cut. Once the cutting patterns have been created and can be put on a USB key, the operator can perform the entire sequence of cuts without errors and without wasting time repeatedly turning the panels on the worktable or trimming an edge more than once. For each cut, ‘ULTRACUT’ indicates how the panel must be positioned and the reference dimensions for the cuts or it suggests controlled movement of the programmed parallel fence. The operator can modify the logic with which ‘ULTRACUT’ proposes cuts by acting on the general parameters or using a button which shows the various possibilities for the cut displayed, the parallel fence or squaring fence stops. ‘ULTRACUT’ is easily retrieved with the Vanguard control and allows the management of materials magazine, various cutting lists and optimisation parameters, like on ‘Ottimo Perfect Cut’, the system used by SCM’s Sigma range of automatic panel beam saws. ‘ULTRACUT’, exclusively on L’Invincibile models SI6500 and SI6000 circular panel saws, overcomes all problems relating to the preparation of cutting lists, minimising rejects and operator errors. ‘ULTRACUT’ doesn’t replace the operator, but like a ‘Sat Nav’ device for drivers, it is a useful aid when working on long cutting lists. ‘ULTRACUT’ is just one of the latest SCM patents, the result of research and continuous development by a company which is a leader on the market in terms of innovation and its exclusive solutions.

A Superior Finish For Hillside Veneers Based in Bolton, Lancashire, Hillside Veneers is owned by Ken Armstrong and is a company that specialises in the manufacture of bespoke veneered panels servicing the cabinetry and shopfitting companies along with the furniture makers and office designers.
n order to move his business forward Ken realised that he had to look at the possible investment in new plant and equipment which would both compliment the quality of work for which Hillside had already become recognised and also to increase their manufacturing potential. One key area which needed addressing was the secondary and final finishing of the panels which had been veneered using the company’s heated press. After being pressed, all panels were pre sanded manually before being lacquered and then after lacquering were again manually de-nibbed prior to the application of the final coat. This time consuming process based on existing work in progress took 2 of Hillside’s employees around 30 hours per week to complete, hence leaving very little scope for future growth. Upon looking at the justification of investing in a wide belt sanding machine, one of the companies Ken contacted was J & C O’Meara Ltd, area distributors for the Kundig range of wide belt and edge sanding machinery.
I
’We need a machine to be able to cope with the complexity of sanding and finishing a top with quartered cut walnut, an inlay and a book matched burr walnut centre to give the quality demanded of a boardroom table destined for a very prestigious client.’
12
An appointment was made for a site visit by Mr Carl O’Meara to view the work in progress and also to discuss both current and future requirements that would allow Hillside to progress and look to the future. Says Carl O’Meara ‘As with all specialist machinery manufacturers, there are always a number of options available, this being dependent upon the processes for which the machine is to be used and also the required levels of productivity’. Based on the findings upon this site visit, it was concluded that a machine would have 3 main functions, firstly to calibrate the raw MDF prior to veneering, secondly to pre-sand the veneered board prior to lacquering and thirdly to de-nib after lacquering. Kundig AG, based in Switzerland produce a comprehensive range of wide belt sanding machines from a single belt machine to multi head top and bottom sanding lines. From this broad range of sanding machinery, it was suggested that minimum consideration be given to one of the Kundig Premium machines, with 1st calibration roller then second segmental pad to cater for the veneers but also to have the lacquer sanding options which included variable speed to the abrasive, vacuum bed and action controlled belt blower to clean the finer grit abrasives. The alternative to the Kundig Premium range of machines with traditionally mounted sanding heads is the award winning Kundig Brilliant series of sanding machines where at least one of the sanding heads is mounted at 10 degrees to the travel of the work piece, hence sanding in the ‘shear plain’. Without prejudice or expectation, it was arranged that Ken and 2 of his employees made a site visit to Kundig AG’s Wetzikon headquarters where a batch of samples had been sent and could be sanded on the 2 different machines which were amongst those on permanent demonstration in Kundig’s dedicated showrooms. These samples included various veneered panels, some with

inlays and some with veneer tape and also a number of lacquered panels. Says Ken ‘Common to both machines which was very apparent, was that the handling of the work pieces was going to be a lot easier on the operators due to the Kundig machines having a fixed bed, where the sanding head increases or decreases in height to the desired working thickness. Also, from an operator’s point of view, having such features as the ‘Enormatic’ setting device meant that once actuated, the machine would set itself without the need for the operator to return to the control panel, even starting up the conveyor once set, ideal for when we are sanding full sized sheets’. During these rigorous tests, it was found that the Kundig Brilliant with the oblique sanding head was not only found to be a lot more effective in removing the tape from the veneered samples due to the overlap of grit in contact with the work piece during the sanding process but also having a shear cutting action offered a totally clean surface free from fibres. When tested on the lacquered panels, again the Oblique sanding head showed a far superior finish due to the nature of the shear cutting action and even when a purposely damaged sanding belt was used, the defect was not transmitted to the surface of the lacquered panel, as it would have been on a

traditional style sanding head. Says Ken’ The visit to Kundig in Switzerland was of massive benefit to us. As with all small to medium sized companies, this level of investment has to be right and to be able to see the different configurations of machine, to run tests and see the results was fantastic. We also had the opportunity to see the machines in build and how they are constructed. Equally important to us was meeting the people behind the product and one of the company owners, Mr Stephan Kundig spent the whole day with us’. Say’s Carl ‘ So impressed was Ken with what he had seen, that on the way back, before the plane had even landed an order was placed for a new Kundig Brilliant-2 1350 REd with lacquer sanding equipment’. Since the delivery and commissioning of the new machine, the work that would ordinarily have taken 2 operatives 30 hours is now processed in less than 6! This obvious advantage along with the improved quality and consistency of the results achieved from the machine has allowed Hillside’s manufacturing to be more productive whilst giving the flexibility to take on more work and improve delivery schedules.

Wood Waste Technology Ltd Provides a Solution to Renatus Waste Problem enatus Ltd, a leading manufacturer in the design, fabrication and refurbishment of church organs has chosen Wood Waste Technology Ltd. to supply and install a wood waste heater for their production facility. The WT10 wood waste heater, which suited Renatus’ application, produces around 90kw/hr (300,000btu/hr) of heat into the workshop, and will dispose of a large skip of off cuts per week, saving approximately £6000 per annum in skip charges and a further £3000- £4000 on gas bills making the payback period around 12 months. Customers can then look forward to savings somewhere in the region of £50,000 over the next five years. Managing Director Colin Peacock looked at a few different options and suppliers but chose Wood Waste Technology due to their excellent reputation and well known outstanding after sales service. Mr Peacock explained “Many people do not realise exactly how much money is spent on skip and heating costs and the figure is quite frightening when worked out over a 12 month period, I was paying £400 in the summer and around £800 per month in the winter, I financed the unit for a couple of years and my outgoings are now £250 a month, a saving from day one! I have been looking for a reliable wood waste heater and supplier for some time and after viewing many different models actually working on site chose Wood Waste Technology, mainly due to
R
glowing reports from their customers, and also the well built and heavy duty design of the unit. I was also pleasantly surprised to find that as manufacturers of their own equipment they were the most competitively priced units in the marketplace. The installation was quite complicated and a tight squeeze, but the engineers who fitted the unit where excellent and the whole operation went like clockwork. ” Managing Director of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft comments,” we believe in providing very affordable solutions to ever increasing waste and heating charges and keeping payback periods to a minimum, which will be reduced even more with current hikes of between 15 – 35% on gas & oil price. We also pride ourselves on our outstanding after sales and service departments, which we believe has made us the U.K No.1 manufacturer in our field, this has been highlighted by our continuous growth and purchase of a new production facility. The majority of our business comes from recommendations and we are always more than happy to supply names and addresses of any of our clients for new customers to contact, being a great believer in customers listening to first hand experience of people who have dealt with us rather than sales talk.” The WT range are fully certified to be installed in clean air zones without the use of an afterburner, this will save approximately a further £2500 on the initial cost and £2000 per annum in running costs compared to competitors units, making the payback period the quickest in the market place today. Wood Waste Technology manufactures a wide range of heaters from small hand fired units to fully automatic systems to suit virtually all sizes of companies. We also service other makes of wood waste heaters, supplying genuine spares at up to 60% cheaper than our competitors.

Fittings and components are the key to kitchen use ost kitchen buyers probably already have a good idea of the look they want their kitchen to have before they walk into the showroom. What they haven’t been able to visualise is how it will work and perform for them after being installed. Kitchens have become highly sophisticated when it comes to interior cabinet planning, access and motion. Storage has become a major consumer priority and selling point so the better fitted the kitchen the better it will perform. These are few of the “musts” of today’s modern kitchen: All drawers and pullouts must move on effortless runners that offer full extension to the user for total access to the back of the component. More and more customers are insisting on soft close and this should be integrated into the runner. As people appreciate the benefits of storage, so deeper and wider drawers are called for. Therefore runners need lateral stability and load bearing capacities of 50kg plus. Internally, drawers need to be organised with flexible dividers and gallery systems. Special units require special applications like larders and corner units. On the walls, cabinets with doors must have hinges with the correct opening angles and these too should be fitted with integral

soft close mechanisms. There is a growing demand for lift up doors in various configurations. The fittings for these units need to be specially engineered so that the weight of the door panel (or door panels if bi-fold) do not pose any effort for the user. Soft close on these systems is, once again, essential. These are just the basics that the buyer of new kitchen should be looking out for.

The fittings and components aspects of a modern kitchen are exemplified by the entire range of products and systems from Blum that have been developed in accordance with co-ordinated product planning. The Austrian fittings manufacturer have set and led trends for many years now – from the first CLIP hinge for tool-free mounting through to the establishment of the modern kitchen planning concept of Dynamic Space® which encapsulates all the benefits of Blum’s superb storage components and fittings. Blum have always sought to make using the kitchen a practical, pleasurable experience. This has come about by developing products according to their philosophy of ‘Global Customer Benefits’ which aims at giving advantage to all involved in the chain – manufacturers, retailers, fitters and users. So now when we examine the dynamics of the modern kitchen most of the accepted ideas have come from Blum designers. In base units their storage ethic calls for all fixed shelves to be eradicated and replaced with full extension TANDEMBOX drawer and pull-out

Full extension and organization are essential systems with integrated BLUMOTION soft close. Internally Blum have developed ORGA-LINE as a sophisticated and flexible system for personal organisation. Now, moving still forwards, Blum offer SERVODRIVE to automatically open drawers at the touch of a hand, knee or foot.

Difficult areas have not escaped the ingenious attention of Blum designers and the aim is to use al available space and volume in the most accessible way. The SPACE CORNER is a unique and innovative use of the problematic corner areas. Under-sink and in-plinth drawers make use of normally wasted space. In larder units, full extension pull-outs are able to use the full cabinet width due to special Blum zero-protrusion hinges. On the kitchen walls Blum latest AVENTOS lift systems make opening heavy doors totally effortless and the integrated BLUMOTION soft close make closing simple and safe. AVENTOS is available in 4 different configurations and soon to be equipped with an automatic opening system. Intelligently placed in the correct positions brings Blum’s storage units into the synergetic advantage of Dynamic Space® with around 55% additional storage achieved over a conventionally designed kitchen.
