CASE HISTORY Cabinet Vision Vital for One-Off Specialist A manufacturer of hand-made bespoke furniture says the right software is vital to maintain their reputation. Oakleigh Cabinets have been working with Cabinet Vision for about 15 years and always embrace the updates in each new release. “We don’t offer a standard product range,” says owner Maurice Leigh. “Customers come to us because they want something different; a one-off.” The familyrun business operates with 14 employees out of 9,800 square foot premises just South of Manchester, supplying bespoke kitchens, utility rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, studies and family rooms. Customers include kitchen and bathroom showrooms, interior designers, housebuilders such as Bellway Homes, and the public. Oakleigh now use Cabinet Vision’s flagship, Solid Ultimate, taking full advantage of its solid modelling technology – along with Screen-To-Machine, the most powerful automated CAM solution in the woodworking industry, which sends all the designs as machine-ready G-Code straight to their Anderson Stratos Pro CNC router. And Label-IT™ helps them keep track of which panels belong to which job when they come off the machine. Maurice Leigh, who runs the company
with wife Linda and daughter Gemma, says they were quick to take two enhancements in particular, on board; one of which, the updated 3D customer rendering feature using global illumination, was introduced in the latest release, V8. “This is very beneficial for us as it gets everything across to the customer in a much clearer way, showing them exactly how their room will look in situ.” The other feature which he finds especially useful is the ability to produce drawer boxes on the router. “It gives me more control when I set out a job. We use six or seven different styles of drawer box, and I can simply put those into Cabinet Vision, edit them and run them through the system, instead of having to draw everything manually and then tell the shopfloor how to shape the front or sides.” As their work regularly incorporates bespoke curved and shaped cabinets, it can take around eight hours to design a full kitchen. “If we haven’t drawn the part in Cabinet Vision initially, we use the order entry system
Maurice Leigh, with daughter Gemma and wife Linda
to input the information from the customer’s drawing, and manipulate the cabinets or joints if necessary, before nesting, and running the job through Screen-ToMachine. The CNC operator loads the machine and the panels are cut. We have a take-off table and printer, so as the sheets come off we print labels using Label-IT™, which include all the edgebanding information and correct descriptions.” Jobs involving mainly square panels are nested using block nesting. For panels needing angular shapes or curves they use Cabinet Vision’s True Shape nesting capability to get maximum usage from their material, which includes melamine faced chip board, veneered and standard MDF and plywood, along with hardwood boards to make oak, maple and walnut drawer boxes. Job sheets are produced with each order, and a booklet goes to the workshop so the craftsmen can see exactly what they’re making. “Because Gemma and I use Cabinet Vision on a daily basis, it’s just second nature to us.” For further information: Tel: 01189 756084 Email: stewart.bint@verosoftware.com www.verosoftware.com Oakleigh Cabinets: www.oakleighcabinets.co.uk

Salvador and Elcon Success in the North East Northumberland based Transped go for high production crosscutting and vertical sawing technology from Daltons Wadkin When Blyth Northumberland based Transped Ltd decided to replace existing crosscutting and panel sawing machines with new equipment during the latter part of 2012 they approached Daltons Wadkin knowing that they were able to offer arguably two of the best engineered and most highly rated machines available. Transped Ltd were established in 1997 to create add-on services and marketing for the Port of Blyth. The company’s activities embrace a wide range of import/ export activities including shipping services, distribution and storage, worldwide forwarding and importantly import/ export packing, hence their requirement for high specification woodworking machinery. Daltons Wadkin Sales Director Andy Walsh had no hesitation in offering the Salvador S200 Superpush Optimising Crosscutting System with which the company have had much success and
paired this with an Elcon 135D Vertical Panel Cutting Saw of compact and operator friendly specification designed to suit limited operating space and a comparatively low budget. The Salvador Crosscut is designed for fast and accurate cutting, incorporates pc controls and is fully programmable. With the majority of packing made to measure, Transped required an automatic Crosscut that was quick to set up providing the operator with a user friendly interface enabling quick entry of customised cutting lists. Having had some issues previously with equipment reliability, support back-up and spare part availability was paramount. Both machines were delivered, commissioned and installed by Daltons Wadkin during the winter and the old machines which Transped had been using were taken away. Subsequently Transped now have two brand new machines in their workshops and as Customer Services and
Warehouse Manager Daniel Hooper commented, “We are delighted with this equipment and with the assistance and service provided by Daltons Wadkin who were helpful from start to finish. The machines will improve the efficiency and accuracy of our production as well as being easy to operate and safe to use.” Andy Walsh added, “We have been supplying Elcon Vertical Panel Saws for many years and there are countless numbers of them all over the UK and Ireland but the Salvador is a comparatively recent addition to our portfolio and it is particularly satisfying to be able to place another one in the North East, strengthening as it does a network of installations which is fast growing throughout the UK.”

SCM Sigma Prima Beam Saw for Entry Level Panel Processors The Sigma Prima Automatic Panel Beam Saw is the perfect solution for small and medium-size companies requiring the cutting and breakdown of all types of panels including chipboard, MDF, MFC, plywood, etc., with a perfect cut finish. Blade projection on the Prima 50 and 67 is 50 and 67mm respectively, with a 3300, 3800 and 4300mm rip cutting capacity and a choice of 2100, 3200, 3800 and 4300mm cutting depths. A variable saw carriage speed of 6 to 30metres/min., and 24metres/min. for the rear pusher and clamps. Long-life high performance and quality is due to the use of THK guides instead of round bars for the raising and lowering of the saw carriage and the base derived from the top of the range models. Strong “H shaped beams and rack and pinion for the rear pusher movement with very high positioning precision due to the reading
system utilising a magnetic band. The automatic side aligner, included as standard, slides on THK guides ensuring maximum precision when cross cutting panels, therefore reducing cutting times. The saw carriage, driven by rack and pinion, ensures top finishing quality and long-life performance, which are typical features of much larger industrial machines. Waste reduction is ensured by special openings in the pressure beam, which eliminates all interferences with the panel grippers and ensures that the entire panel is utilised. Two rack and pinion systems connected by a torsion bar ensure that the vertical pressure beam movements are perfectly aligned. The beam saw is controlled by the latest PC/PLC control system, with several Software options available, such as Wincut (PC/PLC operator's interface) and graphic editor, Cutty (first level cutting optimiser

Elcon Launch The Titan Technical breakthrough for Dutch saw manufacturers Visitors to the recent Ligna 2013 show at Hannover may have noticed something of a ‘monster’ Vertical Panel Cutting Machine on the Elcon stand. This is the brand new model DSD Titan and has been designed to enable the cutting of material up to 150 mm thick. UK distributors Daltons Wadkin claim that this is another ‘first’ for their Dutch Panel Saw partners. Alex Dalton said, “Elcon frequently lead the way when it comes to technical advances with this type of machine, for example the fully programmable Elcon Quadra and the unique Advance Clamping system for holding multiple panels during the cutting operation. The Titan has been developed in
response to an increasing demand for a machine to handle panels with a greater thickness than the normally accepted maximum of 80 mm. This machine can cut through panels up to 150 mm and will handle a diverse range of materials including wood based panels, plastic, aluminium or even steel.” Elcon engineers have developed the Titan using a double column construction with heavy duty bearing blocks for the saw unit. It is equipped with a high power 5.5 kW or optional 7.5 kW motor and pneumatic rotation of the saw head for easy operation. Other technical advances amongst optional functions available include a specially designed saw guard to protect even very sensitive top layers of panels,
automatic panel detection to prevent damage to the edge of panels and a laser line indicator to show where the cutting line will be. The Titan Panel Saw will be the ‘big brother’ of a comprehensive range of Elcon products marketed by Daltons Wadkin in the UK and Ireland which includes the programmable automatic Quadra, the Advance systems and the popular DS and space saving D models.

PROFILE William Hughes Continues to Grow its Manufacturing Facilities in Bulgaria When William Hughes opened its new production facility in Bulgaria in 2004, it was hard to imagine that nine years later the operation would have proved so successful that the factory has expanded four-fold. Located near Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second city, William Hughes’ 4320 square metre, custom-built factory now employs 131 people and its scope and product capability continues to grow as new machinery and processes are added. William Hughes specialises in the manufacture of springs and bent wire assemblies. Production is split between its UK headquarters in Stalbridge, Dorset and Bulgaria, depending on the type of product and the location of the customer; for example, products requiring a higher labour content are generally channelled to Bulgaria. Torsion springs are a particular area of expertise in Plovdiv and there is additionally a strong local demand for this type of spring. William Hughes is also an approved supplier for Johnson Controls and a major new contract for Turkey involving parts for
a popular minibus, has accounted for a 20% increase in turnover. Over 45 new parts are involved, including a mixture of bent wire, springs and assemblies. Turkey is only a few hours from Plovdiv by road (414 Km) so the benefits of supplying locally are many. Other supplier customers include Fehrer, Lear and CTS, with most parts destined for the automotive market, in particular vehicle seating. As demand for its high quality products has grown, new machinery and processes have been installed in Bulgaria to help support the UK manufacturing facility. For example, last year, four new wire forming machines were installed bringing the total in Bulgaria to 29. Robot welding capacity has been increased two-fold with 6 robots being fully utilised. The company has also added two vertical injection moulding machines with a capacity of 120 and 250 tonnes. Traditionally, William Hughes has made clipped car seat mats but these new machines allow the seat mats to be overmoulded, dispensing with the need for clips altogether and providing an assembly that
is both strong and fast to manufacture. New finishing processes have also been installed at the factory enabling wire parts to be coated with Delta Tone and Delta Seal for corrosion protection. As Max Hughes, Managing Director, William Hughes concludes, “Establishing our first overseas production facility was an exciting experience. We have seen a growing demand for our products from the developing local markets in Romania, Serbia and Turkey as well as the traditional markets in the UK, Poland, France and Germany. We are delighted with the continuing success of the project. With our reinvestment programme, we look forward to the continuing growth of our facilities to the benefit of both the local economy and our overall UK capability.”

CE Accreditation a Quality Step Forward Last year when The Premier Group was looking for ways to expand the manufacturing group’s business portfolio they identified Ladymead Joinery as an ideal acquisition, and after negotiations it was acquired and re-named Premier Architectural Joinery (PAJ). “PAJ was an exciting acquisition to add to our plastics & security product companies as it was local. It was in desperate need of investment having expanded heavily in cutting edge CNC equipment just prior to the recession and was struggling under debt burden” says Patrick Green MD of the Group. The last 14 months has seen significant investment in additional equipment, and more importantly, investment in quality management systems including CE accreditation and ISO9001:2008 Quality Standards. “Soon after the acquisition it became apparent that the urgency for CE accreditation was the ‘elephant in the room’ that everyone was ignoring!” continues
Patrick “So at our first production meeting of the new year, it was decided that we should address this and we started on a programme of total quality management” The extensive work has paid off with PAJ achieving CE Accreditation for their timber window & door sets and improving their QMS to ISO9001:2008 standards. “It was refreshing that everyone involved saw the positive side of this process and embraced it willingly” comments Patrick, “Implementation significantly improved productivity as well as quality, so much so that we have now had the windows tested and it has been indicated that the timber windows will achieve ‘A’ ratings under the BFRC Window Energy Scheme for which we are awaiting ratification” PAJ employed the services of CENSolutions Ltd’s MD, Michael Galliard “Mikes guidance through the maze of CE implementation was invaluable, we couldn’t have done it in the timeframe without him” says Patrick. The rest of the year is now focussed on the move to the brand new 6000 sq foot

Company History Premier Architectural Joinery Ltd (PAJ) was founded in 2012 when The Premier Group acquired Ladymead Joinery (LJ) and re-branded it to be more in line with the group profile.
financial and managerial, setting PAJ up to be one of the best joinery companies in the UK. The focus has been moved to concentrate on the bespoke end of the listed, period and contemporary market sector.
Ladymead Joinery was founded in 2001 by one of the present directors of PAJ, Anthony Clark. Anthony trained at Aylesbury College as a carpenter and joiner and then gained his experience working for a variety of corporate and private companies.
Anthony is the Operations Director and oversees the day to day running of the business, while Patrick brings his marketing & company management skills to the table.
In 2008 Ladymead was growing significantly and the decision was made to invest over £1m in state of the art CNC manufacturing equipment increasing the capacity significantly to meet demand. Unfortunately, as we are all aware, 2008 saw the start of one of the worst recessions ever recorded and while Ladymead managed to largely weather the storm it was very difficult to grow in the climate. In 2012 Premier Group Director Patrick Green was looking to expand the groups companies and was wanting to find a local manufacturing business to add to the group. Patrick and Anthony had known each other for many years after meeting in the local village pub, and after a chance conversation one evening it was agreed that Premier Group would buy a majority stake in Ladymead and bring it into the Premier Group of Companies.
2013 has seen significant quality improvements resulting in CE Accreditation for the window and door sets, approval to Quality Standard ISO9001:2008 and has had its windows rated ‘A’ under the BFRC Window Energy Rating Scheme. Add into this their membership of FENSA & BM TRADA competent persons schemes and Trustmark status, the quality is truly outstanding. The business is going from strength to strength and has just commissioned a new purpose built 6000 sq foot production facility to cope with the expansion. The move to the new facility is due in the Autumn 2013. The business focuses on all aspects of quality hardwood joinery including – windows, doors, conservatories, roof lanterns, staircases, screens, gates, furniture, bookcases etc. etc. The client base is approximately 60% Trade and 40% retail.

INSTALLATION Large Holz-Her Edgebander Installed at David Urquhart Joinery David Urquhart Joinery of Portsoy, Banff, has recently invested in a large, high spec. Holz-Her Arcus 1336 Premium edgebander. It is a heavy duty and exceptionally stable and precise machine returning near zero setup times and glue lines, ideal for the high class panel and joinery products they manufacture. David Urquhart has always believed in moving his company forward by using the latest new generation technology available. Prior to this investment, the company installed the Weinig Powermat 500 planer moulder, the OptiCut S50 cross-cut saw and before that, the Profimat 23 – all high precision German engineered machines. The Holz-Her company is part of the Weinig Group, and the technical backup service to customers is the same guaranteed service Weinig are renowned for, on their moulders and tool room equipment. Well known and highly reputed in the woodworking industry for quality joinery, David Urquhart mainly supplies products to builders’ merchants, building contractors and individual customers. By using the latest CNC machines, they are able to

deliver bespoke, solid wood joinery, to the highest quality standards, quickly, and at highly competitive prices, without increasing staffing numbers. Flexible production and meeting delivery promises is the key to their success.
The company have now expanded into the panel market. Says David Urquhart, “I wanted to penetrate the top quality end of the market, so I researched the panel machine manufacturers that offered reliable heavy duty edgebanders, incorporating the most advanced new panel technology, with a proven and dependable backup service. Holz-Her met all my detail needs and, as part of the Weinig Group, I feel secure with their training and prompt service from past experience of Weinig UK. With this new addition it will complement our door set production for bespoke solid core and the laminated faced doors. We have found the Holz-Her very user friendly with the setup times and change over for different products all done from the screen taking away operator error in the set up”. The Arcus 1336 Premium offers precise and rapid setup facilitated by servo motors orchestrated by the machine’s touch screen controller. A key advantage of Holz-Her edgebanders over other makes is its patented ‘Glu Jet System’. It allows the use of granulates or cartridges, with a choice of capacity of 330g to 2 kg. Its thin film

INSTALLATION technology produces ‘invisible joints’, giving an impressive quality finish. This feature is so reliable, it carries a 3-year guarantee as standard. The benefits to manufacturers are countless: 3-minute heat up time, saving time and money; no loss of glue power, saving hassle of re-edging; colour can be changed within 3 minutes; EVA or PUR glue can be used; no need for a nitrogen tank for PUR clean down taking up 4 minutes; near zero glue line; no discoloration; and it uses a third less power. All types of edging can be used – solid wood lipping, veneer, ABS, PVC, melamine or acrylic.

SERVICING
T.M. Services Comes to Joinery’s Rescue Stepping in where others had failed, T.M. Services & Spares successfully repaired a seriously damaged Italian four-headed planer/moulder at a Hampshire joinery. The nine-year-old Griggio G23-4 is a vital part of the production process at shopfitting joinery specialists, Powells Joinery, part of the Powells Group of Andover and one of the top 20 shopfitting companies in the UK. When the machine broke down after a shaft had become bent causing extensive internal damage, joinery foreman James Wright called in a local woodworking machinery engineer to get it fixed. “After taking a look at the machine he said he couldn’t tell what was wrong with it, which was very disappointing,” said Mr Wright. “As the Griggio is one of our main machines it was a nightmare being without it.” He then had an idea and rang up T.M. Machinery in Leicester, who had supplied and regularly serviced their Striebig vertical panel saw, and asked if they could help. “They sent down an engineer from their service division the following day and after inspecting the Griggio faxed through a report of what was wrong and what parts were needed to get it going again,” said Mr Wright. The new parts needed included a short and long shaft, two double pinions, a length of Duplex chain and five bearings. After obtaining them from the Italian manufacturer T.M. Service’s engineer returned to the joinery to fit them and make sure that the machine was in perfect working order. “I am 100 per cent satisfied with that T.M. did for us,” said Mr Wright. “Their engineer really knew what he was doing, and this kind of first class service is exactly what we need in the fast-moving

Services & Spares has repaired and maintained a wide range of industrial woodworking machinery. Founded in 1984 by exWadkin engineer Tony Morris, the company is focussed on offering a top class machinery maintenance service. The company has grown to become one of the UK’s most respected woodworking machinery service specialists, providing nationwide coverage. It offers a rapid response to breakdowns as well as delivering regular service programmes. Its highly trained field engineers, who are amongst the most experienced in the UK, can repair most types of

SANDERS DMC Invents the “Sanding Centre” Flexible Solutions for any Finish Stimulating demand with perfect, captivating finishes, whether they are modern or traditional and meeting any requirement, so as to increase a company's competitive edge. In other words, deciding to challenge a still “difficult” market by giving customers what they want, what their tastes require, so that they get a floor or a piece of furniture that they feel is really “theirs”. This is an even more common theme when talking about wood, a material which – depending how it is machined, sanded and finished – can produce a range of different sensations, from a rustic to an ultra-modern look, from farmhouse-style to a sophisticated look. Guaranteeing that the thousand possible finishes can be produced using a single technology, a single machine, is the challenge that DMC, a division of the SCM Group, has overcome with the new range of “System” sanding machines. A “technological container” which can be fitted with the required machining heads needed to obtain any type of finish, even the most complex. Simply imagine what you need to obtain and set up the required combi nation of machining heads to get that result. And that’s not all. The new DMC “System”

machines can hold up to ten different machining heads, easily replaceable, for doing everything needed for now and in the future! The machining heads can be selected from a vast range of continuously updated technical solutions, so as to always guarantee the manufacturers quality with high industry productivity, regardless of the finish demanded by the market. Simply make a few adjustments, combine the
action of the machining heads with absolute freedom and, in very little time, you can “design” a new finishing cycle, with absolutely low costs, and always with a constant and surprising finish quality. An idea that many end users around the World have already been rewarded, solving all problems with a single so lution. This is demonstrated by DMC’s flagship “System T10”, a true “finishing centre” able to produce many surface effects, including transversal and longitudinal waves, light and heavy duty structuring, pore opening, and even perfect reproduction of saw cutting marks, recently much in demand both for wooden floors and for the doors of furniture and kitchen cabinets. Another advantage is that manufacturers can visit the DMC technological lab in Thiene, Italy, not just to see the “System” in operation, but also to study, with the SCM Group’s technicians, the best, most effective and economical way to obtain a very special finish.

BÜTFERING’s New State of the Art Production Line With a history spanning more than 60 years, Bütfering is an innovative world leader of wide belt sanding machines. As part of the Homag Group, it has a policy of continuous product development to meet the everchanging customer demands. To maintain its position as the benchmark of the industry it has recently invested in a new state of the art production line. In a period which has seen radical changes due to the worldwide economic situation, the decision to move the manufacturing facility from the original location in Beckum, Germany to Herzebrock just 20 km away, was a bold one. Herzebrock is of course home to Weeke, another Homag Group company employing more than 680 people in a modern factory producing technologically advanced CNC, drilling and assembly machinery. Integrating the Bütfering brand into the Weeke plant not only necessitated a significant redesign of the production halls, but also the construction of a completely new Competence Centre Showroom. Needless to say, this project required a substantial investment. The Bütfering product mix is extensive. At the entry level, there are simple standardised machines offered in 950mm, 1100mm and 1350mm working widths with one, two or three heads. In Homag parlance, these are referred to as 'Optimat' machines. To address more specialised needs, a range of tailor-made solutions is offered under the 'profiLine' banner. These cover single through to six head machines in working widths of 1350mm and 1650mm with a comprehensive choice of head configurations and options. It was with these criteria in mind that the new production was conceived. The end result is that today, Bütfering boasts the most modern and advanced manufacturing and assembly line for wide

belt sanders in the world. Occupying some 1,600 square metres, the new line has been designed to optimise production and ease of assembly. Machine frames are positioned on huge precision surface plates that move on rails down the production hall. These rails are precisely levelled and have a capacity in excess of 20 tonnes, in particular to accommodate the heavy Sorbtech bases used in both the SWT 500 and 900 series of sanders. This system has the significant advantage that there is no longer the need to re-level the machines as they pass down the production line. Simon Brooks, Homag UK’s sales and marketing director concludes, “With a faster throughput and streamlined

processes, the new facility will produce more machinery than ever before whilst maintaining Bütfering's stringent quality standards. The factory move and investment in this state of the art production line is a clear indication of Homag's long-term commitment to the surface technology industry.”

PROFILE
New Jointing System ‘Clics’ with Trade Show Customers One of the stars of the show at the recent Interzum furniture exhibition in Cologne was undoubtedly the new clic jointing system that could revolutionise the pre-fabricated furniture component sector. Developed jointly by Egger, in a unique partnership with competitor Unilin, the clic system makes it possible to assemble furniture without tools. Instead of glue, screws or dowels, the individual components are joined using a tongue & groove system milled into the material – reminiscent of the click principle used in laminate flooring. Assembling a piece of furniture using the clic method can be accomplished in just four steps. The double tongues on the side edges link up with grooves in the base and top to create a stable connection. Taking furniture apart is just as straightforward, with tests showing individual components can be assembled and disassembled hundreds of times without any signs of wear. On its stand at the giant Interzum show, Egger took a slightly novel approach – with foot-square clic boxes in a range of colours available for customers to try for themselves. “We were pleasantly surprised at the level of interest in the clic system,” said Egger marketing manager Nick McClughin. “Long-established in laminate flooring, we’ve now developed this technology further for use in furniture construction. “Our intention is to support our furniture industry customers interested in using the clic system in new product development, with manufacturers having the option to either license the patented system so they can invest in their own production facilities – or they can buy clic components from us. “We had a stock of clic boxes available at Interzum for customers to take away and show their colleagues, and ended up giving away more than a thousand of them over the four-day show. “I think it’s fair to say that, at the moment, customers are still working out if and how they can make it work for them, their own customers and what the best routes to be market would be.” But, if conversations with UK furniture

manufacturers are anything to go by, Egger believes the preference is likely to be for larger companies to manufacture clic cabinets – especially in bedroom and occasional furniture applications – under licence. There was also interest in Egger’s teaming of clic jointing technology with its EUROLIGHT boards making for a product that is lightweight as well as easy to assemble and take apart. “People are more and more mobile today, increasingly willing to buy furniture online and with the growth in rental properties are moving home more frequently,” added Nick.
According to recent studies, the market for ready-to-assemble furniture grew by nearly 4% between 2006 and 2011, and furniture optimised for straightforward setup and shipment worth more than EUR 8 billion was produced in Europe in 2011. Proof if you needed it that this product innovation is here to stay in some shape or form.

Egger’s ‘synchronised pore’ technology demonstrated how ever-deeper textures can provide a more natural and realistic wood grain finish where the texture traces the markings of the wood. And the new décor trends were dramatically showcased in Egger’s new VDS LIVE KITCHEN – the latest phase of the company’s breakthrough virtual reality showroom system that it is now making available to manufacturers looking to speed up new product development.

The Extended Lifecycle Of Decking James Latham is now offering Lifecycle by UPM, a wood-plastic composite decking that has the luxurious look and feel of a real hardwood decking. However, unlike timber decking, with the minimum of maintenance, Lifecycle will continue to look good year after year, in fact, made in the USA, it is backed by a 25year manufacturers guarantee. A further advantage of Lifecycle over other composite or timber decking is that it has a unique, stain resistant, ‘closedsurface’ that does not absorb oil, spills or drips – something which, after a few BBQ’s or sun-bathing sessions can often make other decks quickly look unsightly. Lifecycle is made from recycled American red and white oak fibres plus polyethelyne with a patented process where the fibres are heat treated and encapsulated in a hard polymer shell. This produces an exceptionally solid and stable board. It’s also extremely environmentally friendly and sustainable. 95% of the materials used to manufacture the boards are recycled, including the oak fibres and plastic polymers. Plus, giving these high quality materials a second life reduces landfill and waste incineration. Lifecycle requires no annual sanding, varnishing or staining and the embossed wood grain surface offers good friction whether wet or dry. Being splinter-free, Lifecycle is ideal for bare feet. Despite being hard wearing, the boards feel great to the touch. Available in three colours: dark Walnut, golden Tigerwood or sun-bleached Desert Sand. All the boards feature natural looking streaks and veins, making each deck a unique living surface.

Textured, Linear and Ridged Structures Printed decors and surface finishes from rustic to elegant The trend for rustic romanticism is stamping its mark on the decorative landscape: oak designs take centre stage, while highly structured surfaces evocative of split wood and matt surfaces give a natural feel. With 29 new stock range additions and a variety of innovative make-to-order designs RENOLIT has based both its 3D and its 2D products on these trends.
Weathered tones The highlights among the new products which appeared at Interzum are the natural looking Magellan oak decor and threedimensional Veralinga emboss. Veralinga is a deep, dynamic wood structure with a smoothly matt finish. It makes the perfect
partner to the Magellan oak decor with its rustic image. Magellan Vintage P has a warm grey shade with light touches of beige to make it look like it has been bleached by the sun and a discreet shimmer of silver lends a hint of exclusivity. In combination with the three-dimensional structure of Veralinga, the finished effect takes on the character of freshly split wood. Looking very sculptural and so even more rustic is the make-to-order decor Inedito Oak in combination with Melinga emboss. Rich knotting and gnarling give life to the streaks of oak. The rough-sawn planks produce a shingle effect with their different lengths. The uneven joints and overlaps cast shadows and give added depth to the dĂŠcor with a dramatic effect.
The streaked wood structuring of Canyon Monument Oak (MTO) is both lively and rustic. Slight finishing marks suggest planing and with different light areas they give the effect of bleaching. With narrow cracks and a few knots, Canyon Monument Oak conveys an aged and rough look while its S-Coat surface gives a comparatively matt feel.
Elegant oak Thermo A oak is considerably more discreet: a blacken oak with finely grained areas, it‘s richly dark colour with red undertones provides a charismatic and sophisticated design. The elegant surface structure gives a discreet touch. Additionally, Thermo B offers a slightly

Also following the line of elegance is the Brabant oak decor, available in two colour ways, each combined with different matching surface structures to give both a unique appearance. A unique combination of ash and oak is created by the Okasha emboss: here you feel what you see. Widely spaced sections of distinctive ash alternate with an authentic oak woodgrain in the interlaying flat areas. Its striking nature gives the impression of real open-grained wood, completed by a slight texture to its surface finish. Increased Demand for AXYZ Routers from Woodworkers In spite of arguably the most damaging and prolonged economic downturn in living memory, AXYZ International has reported a much higher than was expected demand for its highperformance CNC routing, engraving and cutting systems. This has been especially evident in the furniture production, industrial woodworking, joinery and panel processing industries. Much favoured by these industries are the AXYZ 6000 and in particular the 4000 series of machines. These offer a host of both standard and optional production enhancements and have been shown to greatly assist owners of these routers by way of faster throughput, higher volumes and commensurate profitability during what have been difficult trading conditions. In charge of production at Cardiff Theatrical Services, Darren Joyce commented: “We chose the AXYZ 4010 router because it ticked all the boxes in our ‘must have’ list of machining requirements. We use the router to cut out components for scenery and stage constructions involving everything from formers for wooden boxes to complex shapes fixed to timber or steel frames.” At Wood & Wood International Signs, the 4010 router was purchased to supplement the 6010 machine already installed. Procurement Manager, Gary Adams commented: “The 4010 router has run continuously for 10 hours a day, six days a week without any problems or maintenance requirements. The machine was an excellent choice. It is easy to use and totally reliable and is supported by the on-site training and ongoing technical back-up provided by AXYZ International, both of which were outstanding.” Interior design specialist Stringer installed a 4008 router to process components used in, amongst others, the point-of-sale displays and office workplace systems, it manufactures for multiple retail and office/studio environments, including blue chip companies such as the John

Lewis Partnership. Founder and Principal Designer Dick Stringer commented: “Installation of the 4008 router has enabled a total production capability to be introduced, with fast and reliable processing of a wide range of both solid and composite woods.” Two models of the same router have been installed at Leeds-based Sound Leisure. Chief development engineer Phil Patterson commented: “The accuracy and versatility of the routers and the speed of production provided means we can deliver our specialist products to key customers within a time frame of days and even hours rather than weeks when we used conventional methods of production.” At Dorset-based Minster Joinery a AXYZ 4004 router is used to create architecturally sensitive wood-based constructions such as an elegant staircase installed at a Grade 1 Arts & Crafts building in London. Founder and Managing Director Martin Stones commented: “The router is used for a wide range of disparate applications including, for example, cut out formers required for

TOOLING Leitz Tooling UK Demonstrates Demand for ThermoTech Window System With companies looking to diversify, keep up-to-date with regulations and seek a competitive advantage, Leitz has already enjoyed full houses for its series of seminars on ‘Thermal window production to proposed new building regulation standards for 2013’ in London, Leeds and Bristol. Earlier this year, Leitz Tooling UK launched Leitz “ThermoTech Window System”, which enables any size joinery company to manufacture ‘A’ rated thermal storm-proof, flush casement and traditional wood windows. Created in response to proposed Part L Building Regulations energy and carbon reduction improvement targets, Leitz Tooling developed a complete, compliant and scalable system for the manufacture of high quality ‘A’ rated thermal windows by not only large companies, but for small to medium sized joinery companies, opening up new markets and business opportunities and reducing waste and sanding, while increasing efficiency, performance and finish. Brian Maddox, sales manager for Leitz Tooling UK, the UK’s largest supplier of tooling to British industry, said “We have removed the burden of design, tooling, set up and window simulation thermal testing for the energy performance rating; the only things we don’t do is actually ‘performance test’ the window, or make it. Our high quality product is actually the most economical solution in the industry and our seminars give companies the chance to see it in action for themselves.” The features and benefits of the ThermoTech Window System mean that all design U values of the timber windows are 1.4 or better, the designs are expandable for different hinges and the profiles on the system are easily changed, without needing to purchase extra tools. The system is available in multi-tool or dedicated sets for spindle moulders, tenoners, CNC machine centres and window machines. Leitz’s ThermoTech Window System provides an all-in-one package solution which is scalable for the specific and

changing needs of individual businesses. British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) registered simulator with Leitz, Richard Jacob, said “The system supports every type of variation, to suit every type of manufacturer, with any type of specification, with flexibility. As a low cost, dedicated modular system, it is not only as accessible and as future-proof as we can make it, but includes all the support customers might need, including custom window design and the cost of simulation to BRFC regulations to get the approved ‘A’
rating.” Maddox concluded, “If you want to make ‘A’ rated wood windows, call us.”

Thicknessing is more comfortable as in the universal combined machines, during the changeover from surfacing to thicknessing, the surfacing tables open simultaneously towards the inside of the machine, with a 90° angle. The Classic series includes the following models - CU 410 and CU 300 combined universal machines, FS 41 and FS 30 surfacing and thicknessing planers, ST 3 saw-spindle moulder and SC 3 and SC 2 circular saws. The SCM Group has developed a number of "Save Energy" devices including the consumption of power, compressed air and dust extraction systems on all their machines for a "greener" factory environment. Includes feed speed controls and machines into "Stand By" when not in use. With “Save Energy” companies using SCM Group machines can consume less, spend less and increase their competitiveness.

HIGHLIGHTS Veteran of Sharpening Technology Honoured by Ligna This year, Vollmer took part in the Ligna international woodworking fair in Hanover for the 20th time. For this reason, the Swabian specialist for sharpening and eroding machines was honoured with a certificate and a thank you speech. Vollmer therefore ranks among the veterans of Ligna and has been part of every trade fair since 1975, the year it was established. "Vollmer is one of the few companies to be represented at every fair since Ligna began," says Alexander Wurst, manager of the international trade fairs division at Deutsche Messe AG in Hanover. "Over the decades, the loyalty and dedication of the Swabian sharpening specialist has contributed to the success of the woodworking fair and has fundamentally shaped it and for that we warmly thank them." At Ligna, Alexander Wurst handed over the 'Certificate of Appreciation' to Sieglinde Vollmer, the daughter of the company founder and a member of Vollmer's supervisory board to this day, who travelled specially to pick up the certificate. Since 1975, the international forestry and woodworking fair has taken place in Hanover every two
years. Previously, exhibitors from the fields of woodworking and forestry were integrated in the Hanover trade fair. As a specialist in sharpening and eroding machines, Vollmer uses Ligna to present the latest technologies and services in relation to the sharpening of band and circular saws as well as PCD (polycrystalline diamond) rotary tools. This year, the focus was on the new eroding machine QXD 250, with which PCD tools can be produced up to 30 per cent faster than before. Thanks to Ligna's international focus, the trade fair is the ideal platform for Vollmer to speak directly to its customers and partners worldwide. 2013 was a particularly successful fair for Vollmer, as around 40 per cent of the trade visitors came from abroad. In total, the fair included 90,000 trade visitors from 100 countries. For Vollmer, the global expansion of the business is of central importance in order to continue to grow in the future. The technology and service company therefore boasts over 30 sales locations worldwide and has its own branches in a total of eleven countries – outside of Germany, these are located in Austria, Great Britain, France, Italy, Poland, Spain, the USA, Brazil, Japan, China

HIGHLIGHTS ever, Ligna has proven to be the showcase and must-attend event for woodworking machinery and tooling, and for Leitz Group, the 2013 event was a resounding success, “ concluded Liddell. Six Leitz Tooling product innovations were exhibited for the first time at LIGNA 2013:
times with a longer lasting consistent high finish cut quality. The longer profile knife lifetime also has positive benefits as it reduces machine down time and reduces tungsten carbide raw material consumption.
DT Hogger PLUS a successful further development The Leitz DT hoggers have been further developed. The new generation of DT Hogger PLUS provides edge quality and the greater efficiency with a 20% increase in resharpening area across a constant cutting. The DT Hogger PLUS‘s innovative new cutting and gullet geometry reduces noise by up to 3 dB(A), and the DFC-technology ensures trouble-free chip clearance and excellent chip collection on all panel materials.

VectorCut Panel sizing sawblade with intelligent tooth geometry In keeping with the Leitz LIGNA slogan “Making processes more intelligent“, Leitz has developed the new VectorCut panel sizing sawblades with an intelligent tooth and gullet geometry for sizing single panels and panels in stacks. It´s not the saw tooth that is intelligent but the geometry behind the design. The tooth shape remains constant from the first cut to the last. The abrasive area of the saw tooth is reduced by 50%, providing a significantly improvement in material collection. The VectorCut panel sizing sawblades with their intelligent tooth and gullet geometry achieve 30% higher performance time compared to conventional panel sizing sawblades as well as 10% energy saving.
The noise reduced WhisperCut jointing cutter has reached the next level: With increased resharpening area of the replaceable diamond knives, the new WhisperCut PLUS can be resharpened up to 10 times. Halving the weight and optimising the shape of the reusable aluminium tool body yields a noise reduction of up to 5 dB(A). DFC-technology guarantees chip collection in excess of 95%.
Plastic edges can ‘stress whitening’ and dull the material during the scraping processing. Colour fastness suffers particularly on dark ABS, PP and PMMA edges. The solution is Letiz new Duo-MultiProfile. These yield a colourfast, high-gloss polished, glued edge without lining – no stress whitening and no chatter marks. The Duo-Multi-Profile scrapers, consisting of two knives working together, can be used on all conventional edge banding materials. The pre-cutting edge controls the edge protrusion and the finish edge is arranged to take a very thin constant chip to create a profiled area of minimal roughness.

Ligna Orders for Combilift With 15 exhibits including world and European premieres of new models, there was never a dull moment on the two Combilift stands at Ligna 2013. Probably best known for its range of 4way forklifts and sideloaders with capacities from 2.5t upwards, the level of interest shown in Combilift’s latest and smallest model to date shows that once again the company’s R & D department has tapped into even more market potential. The Combi-WR4 (Walkie Reach) is Combilift’s first multidirectional pedestrian truck, developed in response to feedback from customers in the timber and DIY sector for a smaller unit for handling loads of up to 1,450kg. In areas where the general public or employees may be present it also offers a very safe way of handling loads such as packs of timber or laminate as well as palletised goods in confined areas. “We took an order for one of these trucks on the very first day of the show from a customer who had not previously used any Combilift products which neatly illustrates the potential of the WR4 in this sector,” says MD Martin McVicar. “Overall, in a climate where actual orders placed at trade fares are increasingly rare, we secured orders on each day of the event from mainland Europe, Chile and Nigeria for example.” The new 4-wheeled two directional sideloader was also a focal point for visitors,

often found in other sideloader makes when faced with long distance runs at high speed. The by now familiar sight (and sound) of the Combi-CB display team, manned this year by brothers Sam and Josh Moffett was a further attraction on what was probably one of the busiest stands in the outdoor area. Martin McVicar: “Our success this year proves that not only does Ligna remain one of the best international events of its kind but also that our tailor made products are just what the timber sector requires.” For further information: Tel: 00353 47 80500 UK Tel: 07870 976 758 Email: info@combilift.com www.combilift.com

HIGHLIGHTS
Success for Kündig at Ligna Kündig AG reports an extremely successful experience at Ligna 2013, with the latest innovative technology attracting considerable attention and with the promise of more to come in the future. Kündig UK's Carl O'Meara spent time on the Swiss sanding specialist's stand, having primary responsibility to meet and greet visitors from the UK and see how Kündig can assist in their manufacturing requirements and also to work as part of the Kündig team, in Carl's words: "to ensure that people do not get neglected when they visit the stand, however busy it is". Carl reports that the Kündig stand was so busy that there were occasions when all twelve sales staff were demonstrating machines to potential customers, so all that he could do was arrange meetings or take business cards from interested parties, so that the sales team could follow them up in due course. Carl added: "My personal observation was that a lot of visitors to the stand looked first at the performance of the machines and what they could achieve: only afterwards did they look at the price." He reports considerable interest from continental Europe in Kündig's offering, as well as from further afield, for example Libya, Afghanistan, Cameroon and India: "they came to the show, and to the stand, from every continent in the world". Visitors showed particular interest in the Brilliant wide-belt sanders (at least one of which was sold off the stand) and in the demonstration using a purposely damaged sanding belt to show exaggerate oscillation marks when straight line sanding: then, by simply placing the same sanding head to give a shear cut, these marks simply disappear. It was the Technic Precision that had been "under wraps" before the show. Carl commented: "There is no machine like it for the way it is constructed, the way it works and the accuracy it gives." During Ligna, the Technic Precision was demonstrated sanding raw veneer to a calibrated thickness of 0.4 mm. The sander offers an accuracy of ± 0.02 mm and can be utilised on various materials either fed sheet by sheet or from a role, including composites, veneers, aluminium, high pressure laminates, duroplastics, cork fibreglass, carbon fibre,

honeycomb, rubber and insulation, and serves a wide range of industries. In addition to the Technic Flash for the edge-sanding market, the Technic is offered in three wide-belt configurations: the Technic Precision, the Technic BOTOP and the Technic CNC. The range offers bespoke machines designed to meet individual manufacturers' specific needs, making it hard to describe a typical Technic machine. Options available include top and bottom sanding systems with two to six units (or more if required), extra large machines for panel manufacturers, special machines for processing plywood, cutterheads, and machines designed to work with very thin material, ideal for those working with laminates. The Swiss-based parent company reports that, due to the excellent reputation that Kündig has built up over the decades, it regularly receives enquiries concerning potential applications for which there is no pre-existing machine-based solution. Kündig welcomes such enquiries, which allow its engineers to demonstrate their creativity and innovative way of thinking, as well as the quality of the Kündig range. The Brilliant wide-belt sanders come in four designs, numbered 1, 2, 3 or 4, depending on the number of sanding heads, and can be equipped for solid wood, veneer or lacquer sanding. Designed so that it is the sanding group that raises and lowers to produce the

desired thickness, rather than the workpiece, the Brilliant range can be supplied in a wide range of configurations to suit individual customer needs, coming with a standard working height of 3-200 mm and being available in working widths of 1,100 mm, 1,350 mm and (2, 3 or 4 only) 1,600 mm and wider upon request (Kündig have built a number of machines with a 2,200mm working width) As well as the Technic, the edge sanding range from Kündig includes the Uniq, Uniq-S and Basiq, offering a variety of options to meet all edge sanding needs including for high gloss requirements. Carl O'Meara returned from Ligna very positive about the demand on the Continent for Kündig's range of quality sanders, commenting that: “It was a very rewarding show", and adding that he is looking forward to the next set of innovations that will be emerging from the Kündig stable. He said: "Although the presence from the UK was less than from other European countries, the quality of the enquiries received was high," and he is looking forward to sharing with British customers "the secret of quality sanding that is so well known and appreciated on the Continent". Makita M-Class Dust Extractor Now with Triple Filter System • • •
Automatic self-cleaning filter system Variable suction control Stainless steel canister Dust extraction is now a key industry challenge as the health risks associated with dust are recognised as important as the HAV concerns that have been addressed in recent years. Dust from wood, welding and silica pose respiratory, skin and other serious health risks. The latest Makita Mclass dust extractor can be integrated with many Makita power tools to greatly reduce these health risks in the work place. Industry should be aware that the Health & Safety Executive are now policing the use of correctly specified dust extraction systems and failure to meet the correct standard can result in heavy fiscal penalties. It pays to invest in the correct Makita dust extractor rather than be penalised. The new Makita VC3211M has a large, stainless steel tank with capacity for 32litres of dry and 27litres of wet material. The 1,050watt motor generates a maximum airflow of 3.5m /minute and a maximum suction of 22.0kPa. Suction power can be varied by a simple power dial on the control panel. A new design of automatic selfcleaning filter system includes twin threestage filters comprising pre-filter, damper and powder filter. Reverse air-flow is used to clean the filters in turn so that on this new Makita extractor at least one filter is always in operation. The vacuum level is a much smoother wave than other makes where effectively suction is momentarily cut completely when filters are cleaned. This very effective filter system includes an air-flow sensor that emits warning alarm when the air-flow is reduced by near full tank or blocked filters. Coupling Makita power tools to this new M-class dust extractor is simple. The suction hose connects to the dust intake port, or extractor accessory on the power tool, and the power cable is plugged directly into the extractor. This “power take-off”

provides both 110v and 240v connection. With the Makita VC3211M extractor powered up, the on-off switch on the power tool controls the parallel operation of the extractor so that any time the power tool is generating dust in operation, the extractor is automatically working to gather the dust for optimum operator protection. Weighing just 17.6kg the Makita M-class extractor is easily manoeuvrable on two main wheels and a forward castor which also has a locking brake. This extractor meets the exacting standards embodied in the pan-EU standard EN60335-2-69.This requires a class-M extractor to remove dust so that the occupational exposure limits are
equal to or greater than 0.1 milligrams per cubic metre of air. Typically, when using a wall chaser for one hour 15kg of dust would be produced. By connecting the Makita VC3211M extractor the amount of air-born dust is reduced dramatically to just 0.22g. This new Makita dust extractor is a major health protection investment.

WOODWASTE Recycling Wood Waste Creates Marketing Benefits for Manufacturing Business An exhibition company in Coventry has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to reduce its carbon footprint whilst saving money on waste disposal and heating bills. Established 22 years ago, exhibition contractors Exmedia specialise in building and installing conference and exhibition displays and stands for clients around the globe. After making a decision to relocate Exmedia’s production facility in autumn 2010, Managing Director Peter Gibson was keen to improve the company’s environmental performance as part of the move, and researched the possibility of installing a wood burning heater in the new premises. An associate recommended Wood Waste Technology. The team at Exmedia liked the fact that the heaters produced by Wood Waste Technology didn’t need an oil or gas afterburner, making them very economical to run compared to some of the other heaters on the market. A WT15 heater was installed in October 2010 by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers, just before Exmedia moved into its new 28,000 sq ft premises.

DCS Fits The Bill at North Offshore Aberdeen-based North Offshore Ltd, a leading fit-out specialist serving the offshore accommodation, office, hotel and commercial property sectors, has recently invested in new energy-saving dust extraction from Dust Control Systems Ltd. North Offshore’s joinery workshop has a team of skilled craftsman who operate an assortment of woodworking machinery used in the manufacture of all kinds of bespoke joinery and furniture including desks, bars, doors, screens and wall panelling. The company decided that it was time to replace their existing extraction equipment with a modern system that would fully comply with the latest COSHH regulations. Lee Garden, Operations Director, says: “We were ready to replace our existing 3-bag filter unit which was housed in the workshop and had to be regularly emptied. Also, we were mindful of changing legislation and were keen to improve the quality of the working environment by efficiently extracting all dust at source. DCS was one of four extraction companies which we brought in to assess our particular needs and to put forward proposals for a

new extraction system.” Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at Dust Control Systems Ltd, carried out a thorough evaluation of the workshop’s dust extraction needs before proposing a scheme that would deal with all dust generated in the workshop and would save on running costs. The DCS proposal centred round a compact yet powerful filter system, located in a small space outside the workshop and complying
with the latest ATEX directives. System control would employ ECOGATE® energysaving ‘on-demand’ technology and the scheme included a vacuum system for use at work benches in assembly and finishing areas where sanders, hand tools and snip saws are used. Lee Garden adds: “DCS were by far the most professional of the companies we talked to. Every detail and benefit of their proposal was fully explained and we have been very impressed with the way they have managed the project. Installation and commissioning of the new plant was carried out extremely efficiently with little or no disruption to our production.” The compact DCS filter is an NFSZ modular unit, fitted with high-performance ‘Superbag’ polyester filter bags. It has an airflow capacity of 16,000m3/hr and is capable of efficiently coping with varying loads of wood dust and chips. The filter plant incorporates a rotary valve and waste conveying system which transfers woodwaste directly to a box cart. An ECOGATE greenBOX12 controller, in conjunction with a variable speed drive, automatically adjusts the speed of the main extraction fan as woodworking machines come on line or shut down – resulting in projected power savings of over 50% versus a traditional system.
