PEOPLE

An Urgent Appeal from a Good Samaritan Makita’s PR company, Jackie Biggin Media, emailed this story to us and we were so impressed with such a selfless act that we felt compelled to share the story of Bobby Singh with our readers. Nepal was devastated by a 7.8 Richter Earthquake on 25th April 2015. Bobby Singh is a proprietor of a DIY business in Tooting, South London and a father of two children. He has no links to Nepal, however, he was very touched by the media stories of people killed, families destroyed and made homeless. Being a family man this touched his heart. Bobby tried to join charities going to Nepal but he was hindered with red tape for vetting. This did A man on a mission not stop him and he went to Nepal alone, despite his family’s objections, due to their fear for his safety. Bobby decided to help people in the villages in remote areas who have not had any aid or relief from other charities. He also sent by cargo £7500 worth of protective equipment to the rescue workers (dust masks, torches, knee pads, gloves etc). This was stock from his business and personal supplies from manufacturers. Much of this has been supplied to the Armed Police Force in Nepal and the Nepalese army. Cargo was sent by air freight courtesy of Jet Airways. Bobby spent a week in Nepal and befriended some local residents who had been made homeless. Bobby created a team of four helpers who had been affected and on their travels other people assisted. They

travelled miles through dangerous areas and mountains to hand deliver tarpaulins, rice, blankets and flooring mats to those who had nothing and were living under trees. Bobby was in Nepal when the second earthquake struck causing further devastation and he witnessed the panic first hand as running down the third flight of stairs the force of the earthquake flung him to the side of the wall. He had a cut on his hand but was lucky to escape unharmed. He went to Delhi, India on 14/05/2015 to negotiate cheaper supplies and returned to the UK on 15/05/2015. Upon his return, he is still determined to help the people of Nepal even more. Bobby wishes to provide 500 semi-permanent living structures made from brick and corrugated sheeting for the roof which cost about £100 each to erect. This is because the tarpaulin is not sufficient to protect the people in the bad weather especially with monsoon season approaching. These structures provide a half-way home to the country being rebuilt and provide the people of Nepal some normality again. Bobby Singh has set up a Go Fund Me page to raise at least £50,000. He is willing to share his story with the media and to promote the money-raising effort with the hope he can appeal to the general public to donate to his cause. Mike King (11 October 1948 – 22 May 2015) The woodworking industry has lost yet another special man. By now most people in the industry will have heard the sad news of the death of Mike King. I had the pleasure of knowing Mike for many years and would like to pass on my sincere condolences to his wife, Carole, and his family. Mike started his career as an apprentice at Wadkin Limited in Leicester where he was awarded ‘apprentice of the year’. He signed up for a sandwich course at Leicester Polytechnic where he gained an HNC in Mechanical Engineering and became a design draughtsman. He joined Schuberts in Biggleswade as a sales representative and went on to become Sales Director prior to the company’s move to the North of England. Mike eventually returned to Wadkin as Sales Director of Wadkin Agencies until Wadkin closed. As a stop-gap and as it was close to home in Godmanchester, Mike took employment at Elliot Machinery in Eaton, Socon before joining SCM GB (1992) which later became SCM GB Ltd where he became Sales Manager until he took early retirement. Gabriel de Col, MD of SCM UK persuaded Mike to look after SCM’s PR, supplying installation stories for the trade press until his untimely death in May this year.

His love of steam trains was well known by his family and friends; he and his wife Carole travelled all over the UK on steam train excursions. He was also an avid Leicester City supporter and season ticket holder. He was an accomplished amateur football referee in the Huntingdon and Cambridge Colts League and at one time managed an under 12 boys team in the area. The industry has lost yet another great character. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him.

PROFILE Makita Celebrates 100 Years of Innovations • Foremost manufacturer of power tools in the world • Global manufacturing and market presence • Research and development core philosophy Makita, the global power tool manufacturer, celebrates 100 years of technical innovations in 2015. Founded in 1915 as an electric motor specialist in Nagoya City, Japan, the first power tool manufactured in 1958 was a planer assembled for an established machine brand which almost immediately received some innovative design changes from the creative engineering skills of Makita’s founders. This led to the manufacture of machines to Makita’s own design and the brand and its pure engineering philosophy was established. Now, 100 years later, the same level of innovative research continues to design and produce machines that meet identified tasks in many industries, from construction to all sectors of manufacturing, as well as the rapidly growing outdoor power equipment range. In the UK Makita is Britain’s number 1 professional power tool manufacturer and market leader. The UK subsidiary was established in 1972 making this the 43rd year in which British tradesmen and women have been supplied. The Telford production facility was established in 1992 and today produces more than 63,000 power tools every month, 80% of which are exported around the world. Telford today employs more than 300 staff. Globally, Makita has established 15 manufacturing plants operating to ISO standards and produces a range in excess of 700 different machines for delivery through sales and distribution operations in more than 150 countries. Since the creation of the Makita Electric Works in 1915 to sell and repair lighting equipment, electric motors and generators, there have been many successful milestones. Here are just a few that illustrate the growth of the brand over the last 100 years. 1935 saw the first export of motors and generators to the Soviet Union 1958 marked the first production tool and just one year later 1300 handheld planers were exported to the newly established Australian subsidiary 1969 saw the world’s first rechargeable battery powered drill with the launch of the 650D 1978 the 6010D entered the market as the first NiCad battery-powered drill 1981 witnessed the first launch of the Makita pneumatic air-nailer and compressor 1983 production started in Canada just two years ahead of the USA The purchase of the Sachs Dolmar chainsaw business in 1991 set Makita on the path to supplying the world with outdoor power equipment which was reinforced 16 years later with the acquisition of Fuji Robin, the small petrol engine business. In 1995 production started in China with the first Nickel Metal Hydride battery-powered cordless tools introduced by 1997. This innovative new battery science was underscored with the imaginative introduction of the Lithium-Ion battery on the company’s 90th anniversary in 2005. Makita lead the world with Lithium-Ion technology which has proved the cornerstone of the business’s growth over the past decade. Today in the UK, the Makita range of tools powered by the most popular 18v Lithium-Ion battery has reached over 100 different products under a single battery. Never before has one brand offered more than 100 different tools all powered by the same battery technology. The range now contains over 540 tools to meet the demands of most industries and occupations. Warehouse capacity grows continuously to match sales demands for machines and accessories. The Service Dealer network has recently been enhanced to 100 centres, well positioned geographically to provide maintenance service cover for both electric and petrol-engine machines with the corresponding increase in spares back-up inventory. The innovative 3-year warranty policy continues to build customer confidence. For further information: www.makitauk.com, Twitter @makitaUK , facebook.com/makitauk

A Busy Ligna for Combilift Combilift once again proved that it has the winning formula when it comes to attracting the crowds to its two stands at Ligna: around sixteen exhibits incorporating new features and technology, regular performances of the by now much awaited Combi-CB dance routine, hospitality, and the added bonus of perfect weather made for a very busy five days in Hannover. The range of exhibits demonstrated that Combilift has products ideal for use in small carpentry workshops right up to large operations manufacturing modular buildings. Models from the ever popular CSeries, sideloaders including the 4-wheeled SL and stand on trucks were complemented by the smallest Combilift product – the WR4 Walkie Reach with a lift capacity of 1.5t. The largest Combilift, the Combi-SC Straddle Carrier was on show at Ligna for the first time and was a talking point for

visitors, who were impressed by its design and extreme manoeuvrability in spite of its imposing size. With lift capacities of 50t and above, this was initially developed for container handling but, as MD Martin McVicar commented, “more and more customers in the prefabricated house and building sectors are recognising its benefits for the cost effective and space saving handling of oversized loads.” The demo area at the stand in the heart of the open air area was used by Combilift personnel to best effect to show the versatile capabilities of the products to visitors from all corners of the globe. “The visitors to our stand were definitely in buying mood,” said Martin McVicar. “We took firm orders throughout the show from new and established customers. We expect our order books to continue to grow as we process the hundreds of enquiries we received.”

SAWS Award-winning HOLZMA innovation: HPS 320 flexTec impresses the Innovations Symposium With the HPS 320 flexTec HOLZMA has revolutionized cutting processes in batch size 1 production. This cutting cell is purpose-designed for processing single panels and redefines the part flow – with fully automated workflows and unlimited recuts. This world first for the trade and industry was on show for the first time at this year's LIGNA fair in Hanover and was voted one of the "most significant innovations" of 2015 by the Innovations Symposium. Taking place in Hanover every two years, LIGNA is the world's leading international trade fair for the timber and woodworking industries. From May 11 to 15, 2015, its time had come round again. More than 1,500 exhibitors showcased their latest innovations for the woodworking industry. These ranged from tools and machines to entire production systems, for example, for the furniture industry. But which of the numerous innovations is then "the most significant innovation of LIGNA 2015"? The answer was once again provided by the Innovations Symposium, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year. This event is organized by Holz-Zentralblatt (Germany's

leading trade journal for the forestry and woodworking industries), the magazine HK, Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences (UAS) and the business consultancy SCHULER Consulting GmbH. Under the guidance of Professors Dr. Frieder Scholz, Dr. Matthias Zscheile and Maximilian Ober, all from the Faculty of Wood Technology at Rosenheim UAS, an expert panel of students firstly prepared a shortlist. The following criteria are taken into consideration for the title of "most significant innovation": new concepts for furniture manufacturing, building components and prefabricated houses from the three segments machining technology, surface technology and assembly, handling and logistics. Furthermore, the concept must constitute a genuine innovation for the industry as a whole. In other words, it must represent cutting-edge technology that was not exhibited at the previous LIGNA fair and is therefore less than two years old. At the Innovations Symposium on May 13, the professors of Rosenheim UAS presented the results of the initial selection to an audience of more than 200 trade visitors. They then gave their assessment and

announced the three "Top Innovations 2015 ". HOLZMA won a place on the podium with the HPS 320 flexTec saw. This innovative panel cutting cell revolutionizes the cutting process in batch size 1 production with the aid of a fully integrated robot. The robot makes unlimited recuts possible, affording maximum flexibility in cutting pattern layout. Up to 1,500 individual parts can be produced per shift, with a very high level of energy efficiency, little maintenance and an extremely high rate of availability. This complete package impressed the trade visitors at the Innovations Symposium. The HPS 320 flexTec took third place in the contest to find the "most important innovation 2015".

SAWS Striebig Help Architectural Students Embrace Digital Modelling The new Fabrication Laboratory recently opened at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at the University of Westminster in London will enable students to produce architectural models using the latest digital technology. A large array of advanced digital equipment will provide ABS and plaster 3D printing, CNC knife cutting, large-scale CNC routing, CNC metal milling and robot fabrication. To complement this digital equipment, a Striebig Compact vertical panel saw was chosen for use in the Fabrication Laboratory. The saw will allow technicians and students to size pieces of material, mainly MDF, plywood and acrylic sheeting, for use in advanced modelling. Dr David Scott, senior lecturer and academic leader for the Fabrication Laboratory, said: “We chose all our equipment with the same priorities in mind. As it is for student use, apart from cutting accurately it had to be robust, reliable, easy to use, and as safe as possible. In the case of the vertical saw, there was only really one choice, the Striebig, as it’s far ahead of the competition. It has lived up to our expectations 100 per cent and we are very happy with our purchase.” The Faculty decided on a Striebig Compact 4164 model, which is the smallest of the nine models in the entry-level saw range, because as well as having limited space they had no need for a bigger or more sophisticated machine. Fabrication Laboratory technicians, who have been trained in the use of the saw and who will supervise students in its operation, like its tough construction and its

smoothness, both of the saw unit and the vertical and horizontal axis of movement. With a cutting range of 3100 x 1644mm (10 ft x 5 ft) and a maximum depth of cut of 60mm, the Compact 4164 guarantees impressive dust limit values of well below 1mg/m3. All Compact saws are based on a single, fully welded sawing frame to give decades of reliable service whilst maintaining cutting precision. They can be wall-mounted or freestanding and can cut practically all woodbased sheet materials as well as timber, plaster board, plastics, composites and aluminium panels. Dr Scott added: “The new Fabrication Laboratory will allow students to immerse themselves in and explore the exciting and rapidly expanding field of digital fabrication. It gives them a fantastic opportunity to produce work of the highest quality, offering new design possibilities and creative outcomes.” Swiss-built Striebig vertical panel saws, also known as wall saws, continue to be the most popular choice for panel processors. Striebig’s portfolio consists of five machine series catering for all sizing needs; the entrylevel Compact, the Standard, the Evolution, the Control and the latest 4D sawing centre. All models, apart from the 4D, are available in no less than nine sizes with an extensive selection of options available to improve their effectiveness still further. Machines can also be built in special sizes and fitted with specialist equipment to suit individual requirements. The entry-level Compact series, with a cutting range 3100 x1644 x 80mm to 5350 x 2220 x 80mm, includes an automated cut cycle version, the Compact AV, to make them even more productive. The popular Standard series – which has been tried and tested over decades – comes in cutting sizes 3300 x 1680 x 80mm to 5300 x 2240x 80mm, and is the perfect saw for companies of all sizes. The fully-automatic Control series offers an optional Electronic Positioning System (EPS) on both axes for the automatic positioning of both the length stop and saw head. This increases the saws’ productivity by delivering automatic repeat strip and upper trim cutting.

Technician Roisin De Cogan uses the Striebig Compact saw in the new Fabrication Laboratory at the University of Westminster.

With manual feeding of the saw unit eliminated the operator’s job is made easier, giving him ample time to prepare the next job. Numerous procedures are carried out at the press of a button, including locking and releasing the beam saw, setting the horizontal cutting height, plunging and swivelling the motor, locking the support rollers during sawing and fine saw blade adjustment. Where high levels of panel throughput are needed, the Control and the Evolution, with cutting sizes from 3300 x 1680mm to 5300 x 2240mm, offer an optional 100mm cutting depth. The Evolution has many similar features to the Control, making it one of the most advanced manual panel saws available. Striebig’s latest 4D high-end sawing centre machine can optimize and cut a full panel without the operator needing to re-handle it once it is loaded. It’s the world’s first vertical panel saw to offer intelligent cut optimization, even for the most complicated panel and strip cutting work. Delivering a cutting range of 5300 x 2100mm, the Striebig 4D comes with the option for cut depths of 80, 105 or 130mm. Striebig saws are available from sole UK sales agent, T.M. Machinery Sales. Alongside machine sales and installations, sister company T.M. Services & Spares repairs and maintains a wide range of woodworking machinery, including every type of saw.

JOINERY HOLZMA 300 Series Beam Saw Slices Cutting Times For Readshaw Timber HOLZMA, the German engineering company has carved itself a position as the world leader in beam saw technology. It has taken the basic beam saw and developed it into an advanced piece of machinery which does so much more than simply size panels. For the engineers at HOLZMA, it’s not just about designing an efficient saw. Their remit is to create solutions that are guaranteed to make daily manufacturing quicker, more accurate and more efficient. Their goal is to improve product quality, prevent errors and increase both flexibility and output.

Saws that meet specific needs Producing beam saws that deliver new standards of machine versatility is ‘bread and butter’ for HOLZMA. The company has a policy of continuous improvement, innovating, revamping, streamlining and simplifying its range of products all the time. One of its most popular ranges is the 300 Series, designed for small to medium sized enterprises. HOLZMA 300 Series – Compact, technically advanced beam saws The 300 Series models are technically advanced machines that have set the standard for beam saws worldwide. The HPP 300 is the base model, but its specification is anything but standard. It is a compact and powerful saw featuring an 80mm saw blade projection, an exceptionally smooth running saw carriage and low energy consumption. Optional extras include, increased cutting height, ascending and vertical post forming packages, pneumatic trim stops, manual angle cuts, high precision laser guide beam, kerfing, a label printer, a stress-release cut option and Cut Rite optimisation software packages. More recently, an Easy2Feed option has been developed which offers automatic feeding at a budget price and can be retrofitted to both the HPP 300 and 250 models. The core element of Easy2Feed is a

compact scissor lift table which is perfect for loading with a forklift truck. The HPL 300 model offers an integrated lift table for automatic feeding to speed up production and boost throughput. At the top of the HOLZMA 300 Series range is the HKL 300 angular system which is in effect two saws in one permitting simultaneous rip and cross cutting for higher output. The HKL offers an optional waste flap which opens and closes in perfect coordination with the operating cycle of the system removing waste cuttings from the rip saw. It also has a transfer to crosscut saw option. Completing the 300 Series offering is the HKL 300 combiLine. This breakthrough machine enables cutting and routing on a HOLZMA angular saw delivering many benefits. Flexible and highly cost efficient, it virtually eliminates extra work steps for recuts, resulting in a fully automated cut-tosize operation for batch-size-1 customers at very high speed.

The HOLZMA HPP 300 cuts four times faster and increases quality 100% for Readshaw Timber Based in West Yorkshire, Readshaw Timber has seen its business go through the roof since it installed a new HOLZMA HPP 300 beam saw. “It has made a tremendous difference to our productivity,” claims Carl Readshaw, a director of the company.

He continues, “We were struggling to keep up with demand when we had the sliding table saw. Not only was it slow, but the cut quality was far from perfect; after cutting, we had to put the panels onto another machine to square them up which took up far too much time and was a costly operation. “The HPP 300 has changed all that. It cuts three panels at a time and the quality is

outstanding. The cuts are square with no chipping, so they don’t have to go to another machine for finishing. “The increase in quality and productivity has enabled us to take on larger jobs and attracted a host of new customers. We were already aware of the quality of the products from the HOMAG Group, but the HOLZMA saw has performed better than even I thought it would and, I must say, my expectations were pretty high.

Friendly and professional service at the end of the phone “One of the factors we really like about dealing with HOMAG UK is their service. The engineers are extremely knowledgeable and friendly which is a great help. Also, whenever you call head office, a real person answers the phone and puts you through to the right person straight away. You never get left hanging on, feeling frustrated and stressed. Every member of the HOMAG team seems go out of their way to make sure the issue is sorted quickly and efficiently,” concludes Carl Readshaw. SANDERS

Royal Warrant Holder Chooses Viet Sander Greatly improved sanding accuracy is being achieved by a Norfolk joinery after replacing its elderly wide belt sander with one of the latest Viet artisan range machines. Scope Joinery specialises in the creation of high-class purpose-made traditional and contemporary joinery. Established in 1991 by Chris Green and his brother-in-law Peter Lord, the original two-man team has gone from strength to strength. They now employ 15 time-served craftsmen joiners in a 10,000 sq ft workshop on a two-acre plot at Beeston in the heart of rural Norfolk. The company works on projects around the country for domestic clients, house builders and designers and architects. Its skilled joiners can produce everything from new kitchens and conservatories to staircases, windows and doors, restaurant and bar fittings and furniture, In addition to working for the National Trust and carrying out restoration and new works inside churches and chapels, Scope Joinery holds a prestigious Royal Warrant as a manufacturer of exhibition joinery to Her Majesty the Queen. Its new Viet S1 213 sander is a twin head machine with a 1,350mm working width. The sanding elements include a calibrating roller followed by a combination head comprising a softer roller and inflatable pad. The machine features anti-dubbing on the second head and inverter control of the

conveyor belt to allow excellent finish sanding on veneered boards. The S1 model is a heavy duty wide belt sander with a large choice of sanding and finishing elements with additional options including inverter control of the abrasive belt and touch screen controls to give maximum flexibility from the compact machine and increase operator ease and speed of use. Every single component that requires sanding in the joinery shop, including door parts, window frames and staircase parts, whether made from hardwood or softwood, as well as veneered panels and MDF, passes through the Viet.

“The Viet replaced a Sandingmaster that was around 20 years old and was costing us too much in continual repair costs to make it financially viable any longer,” said Chris Green. “As T.M. Machinery had carried out the Sandingmaster’s servicing for several years I asked their engineer if he could recommend a suitable replacement, and he said that T.M had taken over sales of the Viet range. “Because I was pleased with T.M’s level of service over the years I called them to see what they could do for us. I also checked out other wide belt sanders on the internet before finally deciding to go with a Viet. I wanted a good capable machine at the right price and the Viet is just that. I could have spent twice as much to get a machine that does the same excellent job the Viet does. “All the lads like it as it’s a lot more accurate than our old one because of its built-in calibration which leads to fewer mistakes. It has been totally reliable and should give us years of good service.” Now part of the Biesse Group, Viet’s artisan range of wide belt sanders is available in the U.K. from T.M. Machinery Sales, who also service the machines and provide spare parts.

Kündig’s Comprehensive Display Draws In The Visitors KÜNDIG had a successful Ligna, reports Carl O’Meara of Kündig UK Ltd, present on the Swiss parent company’s stand to welcome visitors from the UK and from other English speaking countries, such as the USA and Canada. “As always, Kündig had a comprehensive display of machines including the new carousel brush for sanding deep into profiled surfaces, along with traditional solid wood veneer and lacquer sanding machines, some fitted with crossbelts,” says Carl. “Those visiting the stand were high quality visitors making serious enquiries.” Carl reports that a number of orders were placed for companies based in the UK during the show: one for a three-belt solid wood machine from the Premium range and two further machines from the Brilliant range. He reports that the Brilliant 2 was, as always, popular with visitors “as it is a genuine all-rounder”, along with the edge sanders, while the compact 650 Premium 2 belt machine generated a lot of interest for component work. Also on display were a number of examples of products for which specific machines from the ‘Technic’ range had been constructed: these included honeycomb, veneer, automotive components, composites, snowboards and a ‘butcher’s block’ which was a specially commissioned machine (pictured below),

SAWS HOMAG BMG Machines Enhance Reputation for the Specialist Joinery Group Specialist Joinery Group is a leading manufacturer of bespoke joinery and fitted furniture throughout the UK and Ireland with a turnover in excess of £10m. Established in 1988, it has built an unrivalled reputation for meeting and exceeding customer demands with innovative, premium joinery products for projects in high end residential, office/commercial and public sector markets. Over the last couple of years, the company has invested more than £3m into its Northern Ireland Headquarters, making it one of the most modern, well equipped manufacturing facilities in the industry. “Our business is built upon reliability and service,” said Specialist Joinery’s Director, Ciaran O’Hagan. He continues, “The investment in the new HOMAG BMGs is an important element of our growth plans. We firmly believe that HOMAG machinery is the Rolls Royce of woodworking production equipment; it is totally reliable and consistently delivers quality second to none. “We do a lot of cutting-edge work in the resurgent London market. The HOMAG BMG 511 and 512 are the jewels in our crown, enabling us to respond to the exacting needs of this sector, which has demanded for increasingly bespoke and intricate joinery items. The HOMAG machines have helped us deliver projects such as Rolls Royce Offices, Buckingham Gate, the 2014 RIBA Stirling prize winner – Everyman Theatre, Guildhall School of Music and Google’s European Headquarters in Dublin.”

A Strategic Investment “These new 5-axis CNC models were purchased for two key reasons. Firstly, we wanted to replace an older machine with one offering the latest technology to handle complex projects and, secondly, we required additional capacity to increase the throughput of our production facility. “After carrying out due diligence, we selected HOMAG because the machines offered the optimum lifespan, total reliability and compatibility with the other HOMAG equipment in our facility. In addition, in the rare event of machine issues, the response time of HOMAG’s service engineers means we minimise downtime which is absolutely essential in our business.”

Installation – The Model of German Efficiency “It was important for us that the installation of the BMG 511 and 512 machines was planned and executed with the minimum of disruption to our manufacturing schedules. As you would expect from a global market leader, HOMAG planned the installation programme down to the last detail. “The new machines were installed over a three week period, with the first machine fitted in week one, the second in week two and the operator training completed in week three. “It couldn’t have gone any smoother. The machines were up and running on schedule and providing the increased manufacturing capacity we were looking for. The investment has allowed us to respond to customer demand and accelerate our manufacturing programmes.”

Compatible Control Systems

The Homag BMG’s enable the Specialist Joinery Group to deliver premier projects such as the Concert Hall at the Guildhall School of Music, London

“The HOMAG BMGs are controlled using the woodWOP software, one of the most popular software systems in the world and one our operators are very familiar with. It is easy to use and the inter-operability with other HOMAG equipment gives us real flexibility to deploy our staff as needed across the shop floor. “We had one of the BMGs fitted with a hot melt edgebanding unit which enables us to

do efficient edging on shaped components. The versatility of these CNC machines is amazing and they enable us to make much more efficient use of materials and time.”

Teamwork “At the end of the day, its people that build relationships and together with HOMAG, we deliver award winning projects. The staff at HOMAG UK are very much part of our team. They are friendly and easy to deal with; everyone from the sales team through to the service engineers has an excellent knowledge base and they always give us the best, unbiased advice. “In terms of manufacturing excellence, the BMG 511 and 512 have added a new dimension to our production capabilities. Quality is always at the very top of our agenda and the BMGs give us supreme confidence to deliver the premium projects that we’ve become renowned for over the last few years. “To complement this and raise the skill levels of our craftsmen, we have implemented a bespoke NVQ level 2 across all joinery production staff. This was achieved in December 2014 and was an important element of our investment plan,” concludes Ciaran O’Hagan. B9 Painted Oak Wood David Clouting, the UK’s leading vinyl distribution company, is launching a new range of vinyl colours. The range consists of an extensive collection of colours in the latest combination of B9 texture and printed Decofoil. B9 is a highly effective texture, which replicates the look of a solid oak wood panel. LG Hausys, as a leading exponent in developing new products and manufacturing techniques, has successfully developed the B9 emboss to work in tandem with a subtle print. The overall effect creates a natural looking painted wood product that is suitable for vinyl wrapped doors, five piece doors and laminated flat panels for cut and edge. Alongside the traditional KBB sectors using B9 Painted Oak, the shop fitting and interior design sectors will benefit from the durable, functional and flexible capability of the B9 Decofoil. David Clouting are stocking seven B9 colours: Porcelain White, Ivory, Mussel, Cashmere, Stone Grey, Light Grey and Graphite Grey. All colours tie into existing Decofoil Gloss foils and complimentary MFC materials. Grey is a tone that is growing rapidly in popularity in the UK furniture sector and whilst light grey and graphite grey are

relatively new decors, they are quickly establishing themselves as mainstream growth trend colours. Grey can conjure up a cold feeling, but the look is far from this. Light Grey is fresh and clean and Graphite Grey is quickly taking over as a warmer alternative to black, and a colour that can be mixed in successfully with lighter tones. The combination of these colour tones with the B9 texture is a winning combination that will ensure enduring successful product ranges in the coming years. Boats priced from £5,000 up to £120m use Hampshire based Moody Decking’s teak decks, as their unique construction process ensures the decks last considerably longer than decks produced with traditional rebated seams. Martin and Scott Moody are the fifth generation of their family to work in the boating industry. The current company has been making decks for 10 years, supplying to 12 high end boatyards, with custom one-

offs for individual owners. Previous family enterprises stretch back 200 years and have included building dinghies and wartime landing craft, yacht construction, repair/maintenance, yacht brokerage and running marinas. Martin Moody explains the difference between conventional decking and decks manufactured using his company’s own process: “To keep the planks evenly spaced, a traditionally built deck will have a 4mm wide seam, rebated to 3 – 4mm for a 6mm deck, leaving 3mm of teak at the bottom used to control the seam width. Caulking is only added to the sides of a seam, not the base, so it can expand and contract in the sun. As the decking wears down over the years, the rebates end up with only 1mm of caulking attachment, so when people walk over it, the seams are pulled out." “This doesn’t happen as quickly with Moody decks, because our special

manufacturing procedure creates full depth seams, adding substantial life to the deck, potentially doubling the life of the product. The Moody Decking caulked seam has no rebate; the caulking is the full depth of the seam in every case, regardless of the thickness of the deck. Our teak thickness varies between 6mm and 18mm, depending on the size of the boat. As an example, our 6mm decks have a full 6mm of caulking, while a conventional rebated deck only has 3 – 4mm.” In his opinion, the combination of their digitising system and Alphacam CAD/CAM software slashes average production from around 12 weeks to less than a fortnight, including drying time. “It’s been a real game changer for us, giving us the opportunity to increase our work load because our turnaround is now so much quicker and efficient, as well as reducing the required floor space.”

SOFTWARE - CASE STUDY Their scanner digitises up to 100 metres with extreme accuracy. They then smooth the shape out to tolerance with Rhino before exporting it into Alphacam to undertake the design and styling process incorporating butt patterns, snapes, etc., and thus creating the deck to each customer’s remit. Digitising and CAD technician, Jarrod Hulett, says moving from CAD to CAM in Alphacam is seamless and quick. “An Alphacam program contains around 10 planks wide for a 12-foot boat, rising to more than 150 for a 100-foot vessel. Once we’ve located the planks and inserted them into the jigs, the process is extremely straight forward as we only cut the planks in 2D with machining styles.” Different customers and projects require different material thicknesses between 6mm and 18mm. This requires varying toolpaths and number of cutting passes within the program. As the Alphacam post processor which controls their two SCM Pratix routers and their Rye machine includes material thicknesses, he can then simply click on the NC output to send everything the CNC machine tools need to start cutting the teak to the correct specifications. Martin Moody explains that using the scanner in conjunction with Alphacam for the first time several years ago was a real sink or swim situation. “It was the biggest job we’d undertaken at that time...decking for a 100-foot yacht. We knew we couldn’t achieve the quick turnaround time required

l-r Jarrod Hulett with Mark Collis, Digitising and CAD technicians

by the customer without using this system; we had developed the processes required in our minds for some time, and had the technical support contacts in place. This was the right time to proceed. Everything was then installed and we just had to trust the system – which worked perfectly for us.” “It links the digitising, drawing and design packages together, and means we’ve moved on from hand tooling and then digitising individual small component parts, to the whole operation being done in one seamless design and production process, increasing speed of service,

accuracy and guaranteed repetition.” The process has subsequently been sped up even further with a number of Alphacam macros. Three of these involve extrapolating the planking from their angled positions and fully preparing it for insertion into the jig, which he says has turned a 2 week job on a large boat into just a week. A fourth macro enables a multiple offset to be done from the same line. “Another great benefit is that we don’t need to keep thousands of templates. When a customer wants a replacement deck in 20 years time, we’ve got the required toolpaths on an Alphacam program and can go straight to cutting it. Of course, accidents happen on boats. Planks can be damaged by items being dropped or occasionally through collisions. If we’re sent a picture showing where the damaged planks are in the deck, we simply cut the individual new parts, be that in plank or panel form, for the owner or crew to install. “Alphacam has revolutionised our production process and we continue to work with the Alphacam engineers to improve and refine our processes into the future.”

Woodland’s Three Keywords from Cabinet Vision Confidence. Flexibility. Visibility. Those are the three keywords that Cabinet Vision software provide for one of Northern Ireland’s leading kitchen, bedroom and cabinet companies. Woodland Kitchens, a family-run business founded in Ballymena over 30 years ago by Brian McCloskey, who is still Managing Director, is at the forefront of design, manufacture and installation of high-end, ultra-contemporary and traditional kitchens and bedrooms. All their units are created in a purposebuilt 90,000 square foot factory in Rasharkin, using computer controlled manufacturing technology combined with traditional craftsmanship, and are supplied fully made up. Design Technician Sean Quinn says Cabinet Vision is an essential part of their design process. “It gives us a clear vision of what we’re aiming to produce, and the confidence that what we design will be replicated in the workshop. We’ll take an initial brief on the specifications, and Cabinet Vision’s wizard makes it so easy for us to construct a base unit. That’s always our starting point.” Then comes the flexibility of bringing in materials of different thicknesses and finishes, regardless of the unit design. “We simply toggle between the materials, and have total confidence that the unit will fit within the parameters that we set.” As well as a fast design time – he says it takes around half an hour to design a full kitchen in Cabinet Vision – it also gives what they call “essential visibility” on how all the cabinets interlink. It is this additional detail of the through-section displays that they find to be a tremendous advantage. “Most design packages are primarily for floor plan layouts. They show how the finished cabinets and doors will look, but don’t go into construction detail. Someone may use software like that to design something which looks good, but it doesn’t work when it comes to putting everything together. Cabinet Vision overcomes those issues by giving me all the details I need to be fully confident that my designs can be

machined and constructed perfectly. “With Cabinet Vision I can design a unit that isn’t just a block of a certain height by a certain width and certain depth...I know the position of the shelves, where the feet will go and how the fixing components are going to interlock the units together, down to the finest detail.” And he says because Cabinet Vision shows movement systems such as hinges, drawers, extensions and angles, those can be tested at the CAD design stage, giving confidence that the fitters won’t have any issues at the customer’s home. Overall, he feels designing with Cabinet Vision is three times faster than using other software packages. “And even then, they don’t give the specifics of construction elements. So it’s not just time saving with Cabinet Vision; we get flexibility and full visibility, which gives that all important confidence of knowing that what we see at the CAD stage will be faithfully replicated when we start cutting wood.” And with Cabinet Vision being fully parametric they can take an existing design and tweak it to create something new. Sean Quinn keeps all his programs as a starting point, or base program, for other projects. “We can set up rules for how we want a cabinet to respond, and with a couple of mouse clicks we can transform what we’ve done previously into a new program.” He says whenever they design a cabinet and position a shelf or hinge hole, with tooling attached to that operation, Cabinet Vision gives them the ability to view the part as an individual, rather than just the unit as a whole. Even though their Solid Ultimate edition of Cabinet Vision helps them take the business to a different level, they are constantly pushing its boundaries and asking the support team how it can be stretched to achieve even more time savings. “For example, we attached an attribute to our system to include a specific handle drilling program where we just wanted to click a button to apply it to any panel without having to do it manually every time. It’s just a little tool that makes life easier.

TOOLING

Vollmer Develops New Side Grinding Machine With innovations rolling off the production line at Vollmer, the latest new addition to its extensive product line-up is the new CHF840 and CHF1300 machines for grinding the tooth sides of carbide-tipped circular saw blades. This new generation of TCT saw blade sharpening technology uses five CNCcontrolled axes to machine the tooth sides of carbide-tipped circular saw blades with precision, productivity levels and capabilities beyond anything available from alternate vendors. All commonly used angles are ground in only one cycle, even on saws with group toothing. This makes processing of complex blade geometries a simplistic process for the end user. The new CHF840 has been introduced to deliver a solution for the processing of circular saws from 80 to 840mm diameter whilst the larger CHF1300 is capable of finishing saws from 80 to 1300mm diameter. Offering versatility that leaves nothing to be desired, the new CHF machines provide oscillation grinding as standard to remove maximum material rates in a single cycle. The 5-axis kinematics deliver maximum flexibility and optimal movement co-ordination for short grinding times and to reduce non-production times with an adjustable cam for the ideal tooth positioning. All this, makes the new CHF series suitable for side grinding saw blades for the saw mill industry, woodworking, plastic and aluminium processing and also the metal cutting industries. The machines from the CHF series adjust the angles without assistance, even the hook angles and tooth pitch are automatically detected. To further simplify processing for the end user, the CHF makes it possible to machine convex tooth flanks and it has an optional tooth pitch up to 180mm, which is credit to a second feed pawl for greater flexibility. Additionally, saw changes are possible without adjusting the mounting carriage, so there is no need to set a blade up a second time. From an operational perspective, the new CHF840 and CHF1300 incorporate a multifunctional hand-wheel that makes operation

faster and more simplistic. The axes can be selected and controlled by only one module to avoid the possibility of incorrect operation. This hand-wheel can also be used as a potentiometer in order to carry out speed adjustments in automatic mode. With operator convenience built into every aspect of the new CHF line, there is no need for manual adjustment of radial and tangential clearance angles. This means that operator errors are eliminated and values can be entered as angles or absolute values. With an intuitive Windows based CNC control, the multi-function hand-wheel and the storage of up to 4000 programs that are accessed via a 10-inch LCD colour display, Vollmer has truly covered every angle from the

perspective of user friendliness. "For our new sharpening machines, we provide numerous services such as consultation and training, as well as financing options. We also support our customers throughout the entire service life of the machines, with services for maintenance and corrective repair, for which we operate twelve of our own Sales and Services branches worldwide," says J端rgen Hauger, Head of the Sales Division at the Vollmer Group.

TOOLING First Combi-CBE Model for Slovenia Sold at Ligna Combilift had one less exhibit to ship back to Ireland after this year’s Ligna show in Hannover when the CombiCBE on display on the stand was snapped up by fellow exhibitor Mebor, a Slovenian manufacturer of primary wood processing machines. The compact counterbalance design, electric powered Combi-CBE is the first model of its kind to be in operation in Slovenia and will be used for transporting steel profiles, semifinished and finished sawmilling machinery as well as various sizes of pallets. The Mebor brand was established in 1982 by Boris Mesec and the company prides itself on being one of the world’s leading manufacturers of machinery for the primary sawing of wood and was the first to make a fully automatic horizontal band saw. Now catering for small, medium and larger scale sawmills, 95% of the company’s products are exported.

Boris Mesec and his son Uro visited the Combilift stand when they were exhibiting at this year’s Ligna show. Production Manager Uro Mesec said: “we need a more compact machine for our new production warehouse and we would like a battery operated machine that is quieter for use indoors but still capable of handling 3 tonne loads which can be up to 9m long.” Previously the main handling vehicles used by Mebor were two-directional forklifts which transported woodworking materials around the warehouse. The limited manoeuvrability of these trucks was less than ideal when dealing with long and heavy loads and meant that transportation was a very time consuming process. Wanting a more suitable solution for requirements the company invested in its first Combilift - a C4000 truck- and in 2011 it acquired a second machine, a 10t capacity C10,000, both of which are operational at Mebor’s 15,000m warehouse. The multidirectional capability of the Combilifts

DUST EXTRACTION

Broadstock Saves Power with Ecogate Broadstock Office Furniture Ltd., a major manufacturer of workplace, educational and catering furniture, has dramatically cut its dust extraction running costs by retrofitting Ecogate energy-saving technology. At Broadstock’s 53,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Macclesfield, Cheshire, 90 plus people contribute their expertise to the design, manufacture, supply, delivery and installation of high quality furniture, with all aspects of production being carried out on-site. Operating for more than 30 years, Broadstock has grown into one of the UK’s most respected workplace and contract furnishers, trusted by architects, designers and specifiers alike. Above all, the company ethos is to deliver world class service – from first contact to final fit. Last year, Broadstock management decided that they would explore the potential for energy savings by taking advantage of the free ‘energy saving appraisal’ offered by approved Ecogate installer, Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS). Andrew Gill, Facilities Manager at Broadstock explains: “DCS, together with Ecogate, came in and were able to determine the total extraction demand for all of our high performance machines in

the workshop as well as for two clean-up hoses. They then were able to identify how the individual systems could be adjusted for volume and duty cycle, with the aim of lowering the average total volume and, therefore, our power usage.” The existing dust extraction installation at Broadstock employed two main extraction fans with a total power rating of 59kW. And, as is the case with most workshops, the fans were installed to run continuously, at full load – in this case, for around 2000 hours per year. DCS put forward a proposal which involved retro-fitting the innovative Ecogate optimisation system to the existing dust plant. The DCS proposal predicted that installing Ecogate would result in power savings approaching 60% against previous usage. Broadstock commissioned DCS to install the Ecogate system which comprises two Ecogate Power MASTER® variable speed drive units, each with an Ecogate greenBOX® 12+ central controller, together with Ecogate motorised damper gates and sensors which were fitted to each of the six production machines. The damper gates automatically open and close as machines come on or off line, and the Power MASTER® variable speed drive units respond ‘on-demand’ to the variations in

Ian Rayner, sales manager of Ecogate says: “We confidently predicted that the Ecogate system would achieve power savings of 60% and six months on from the installation, analysis of the system, confirmed that savings had in fact exceeded our initial forecast.”

WOODWASTE

New Wood Waste Heater Furnishes Company’s New Division A North East manufacturing company has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to reduce waste disposal costs and provide free heating for the business. FuDa Hobart Rose in North Shields, Tyne & Wear manufactures furnishings for home decor. The business has been running for 56 years, and now employs 148 people in 4 factories that spread over 100,000 sq ft. The business has recently launched a new division, expanding the company’s activities to include the design and manufacture of occasional furniture, including sofas, chairs and accessories for its customer base of major retailers. Launching the new division meant the company needed more manufacturing space, so it acquired its fourth industrial unit in November 2014. Executive Chairman of FuDa Hobart Rose, David Rose had seen articles in the trade press about the benefits of wood waste heaters and their ability to save companies money on waste disposal and heating. As the new unit had no form of heating, and the amount of wood waste produced by the company was about to escalate with increased manufacture, including MDF and chipboard waste, David contacted Wood Waste Technology to find out more about converting wood offcuts into energy. After speaking to Kurt Cockroft, MD of Wood Waste Technology, and evaluating the prices and outputs of wood waste heaters available, the company ordered a WT15 which was installed in January 2015. Now, FuDa Hobart Rose is benefiting from being able to convert all its wood waste to heat, as the wood waste heater provides a free, environmentally friendly facility to heat the factory whilst saving the company vast amounts of money on waste disposal fees. The company has also purchased a summer heat dump, to allow the waste wood to continue to burn throughout the summer, by sending the heat direct to atmosphere. The new heater is also creating a tidier workplace and saving space as, previously, all the waste would pile up around the factory whilst waiting for disposal. David says: “We’re delighted that we chose Wood Waste Technology as our supplier. As

a company, we have a strong commitment to UK manufacturing, so liked that fact that all Wood Waste Technology’s heaters are manufactured in the UK. We’ve also been very impressed with Wood Waste Technology’s customer service, from our initial point of contact right through to the efficiency of the Wood Waste Technology engineers who installed the heater with speed and ease.“ Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re delighted that we could assist FuDa Hobart Rose to help the business lower its operational costs by saving money on heating and waste disposal.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as

offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.

WOODWASTE Norbord Invents System to Reuse Waste Material; and Improve Product A project to reduce waste wood chip at panel manufacturer, Norbord’s South Molton site has helped lower the risk of fire and, ultimately, enhanced the quality of the final wood panel product. Raw wood chip at the mill has traditionally been ‘cleaned’ using air density separation where blown air helps to lift the lighter wood chip away from heavier contaminates such as stones, glass and metals. However, the team was finding the process inefficient as it was producing as much wood chip waste as heavy contaminate collection. This all had to be sent to landfill which was wasteful and expensive. The Waste Management team at South Molton looked at the problem and came up with a solution: a float-sink process which would allow all the wood chip to float through the system and the contaminants to sink and be collected, followed by an eddy current separator which would further sort the contaminates into non-ferrous metals, such aluminium and copper, and other waste. The scrap metal now provides a useful source of income. As the team could not find any one piece of equipment on the market that suited their needs, they had to design and build the pre-cleaning system themselves. Engineering Projects Manager, Justin Smyth, said: “Being able to start a project like this from scratch has been a great experience and it brought a whole range of special skills together, including our inhouse engineering and electrical teams, as well as involving our PLC engineer to help programme the system so we can integrate and control all the processes. We also involved outside contractors to ensure compliance of safety systems in line with PUWER regulations.” The team is now working on integrating the pre-cleaning system into the rest of the plant so that cleaned wood chip is transported directly into the wood chip silo so increasing the capacity of the new
