PEOPLE Colin Simmons Retires From SCM After 25 years selling woodworking machinery, Colin Simmons has retired from SCM Group (UK) Limited. Mr Simmons was SCM's Sales Manager responsible for selling solid wood machinery including planer moulders, tenoners, CNC window machinery and production lines in the UK and Ireland. Mr Simmons was instrumental in growing SCM's market share and reputation for quality woodworking machinery, supplying a considerable number of machines to many of the UK's leading joinery, mouldings and timber processing companies. Mr Simmons was at SCM for 15 years, preceded by 11 years as Sales Director at Sedgwick Woodworking Machinery. He trained as an electrical apprentice at English Electric, followed by a career at Brook Compton Motors. In retirement, Mr Simmons will continue with his hobbies of caravanning, martial arts (he is a 5th Dan in Karate), completing the renovation of his Sprite car and decorating as well as spending more time with his family.
Kevin Lovell - Sales Manager, Weinig UK Kevin Lovell has been appointed as Sales Manager of Michael Weinig (UK) Ltd from the start of January 2012, responsible for the Weinig division product sales. Kevin has been working within the woodworking machinery industry for 23 years and returns to Weinig UK after 12 years, during which he expanded his experience with panel processing machinery, wide belt sanders and classical machines. The Weinig Group range of products has significantly expanded in the last few years and Kevin is relishing the opportunity to get to grips with the Raimann, Dimter and Grecon ranges as well as the new developments Weinig has pioneered within their market leading range. Mindful of the tough economic realities facing everyone currently, the focus on excellent quality entry level machines throughout the group, such as the Weinig Cube four-sided planer and straightening machine, Raimann UniRip Multi Rip Machine, and the Dimter UniCut Cross Cut Saw, suggest an exciting future. In the best tradition of returning characters, Kevin say’s “It’s great to be back”.

PROFILE The Future of Wood and Panel Working ... by Giben Giben, of course, is a well-known and respected Italian saw maker. There are Giben beam saws in panel shops up and down the country; because that’s what Giben do: they make panel saws ... don’t they? Well sit tight ... Giben now do rather more than that: they have been developing technologies and forming alliances that will herald significant changes in the way we do things. This focuses on the way panels are cut, the way they’re shaped and finished, and the way panel-working factories are structured. Piergiorgio Benuzzi, son of founder Gino, is CEO at Giben and runs the 250employee business alongside managing director Giuseppe Riva. However, the world remains largely ignorant of what this partnership is achieving at a time when many other Eurozone production-machine makers are struggling. Giben hasn’t informed world markets on its corporate progress for a number of reasons, the principal one being: they haven’t had time! Giben has formed a Special Products Division that is working flat out to equip new panel-processing factories in China; they have 14 contracts under their corporate belt already and the 15th is all over the Bologna shop floor as we speak. But these are not just panel-cutting shops — these are turnkey factory and warehouse design-

and-installation projects that are coming in at around 50 million euros apiece and are focused on robotics, logistics and lasers and much more. Management has rearranged Giben the saw maker into three new divisions: Cut to Size, Edging and CNC. The roots of the first are obvious; the second and third speak of strategic alliances. Edging relates to the Giben-funded technology development mission of long-time British edgebanding specialists Ellwood, once well known on the UK stage but lately focused 100 per cent on the strategic requirements of Giben.
A first obvious step in diversification for a panel-sizing organisation like Giben is strategic alliances with companies like Ellwood, who have a strong history in panel edge finishing.ahead of the market and with new models like the superb Prisma 6000.

CNC, however, is a different story. Represented over many years in UK by David Thompson Rowland at RW Machines Ltd., Scandinavian CNC specialists Anderson are among global leaders in their field and have now entered a strategic alliance with Giben to produce CNC products badged under the name GIBEN Anderson ... but there’s more to it than that. David TR, representing Giben in Italy and Anderson in Sweden, was a big supporter of the new growth path, of course. In addition to commissioning a new manufacturing base in Brazil, there are major panel processing technology advances in the second decade of the new millennium; concepts that are likely to take the Italian manufacturer further ahead of the global panel-sizing arena. These include developments like the new PM (Pinze Mobil) System for positioning moving panel grippers and integrating them within a high-technology automation environment for maximum flexibility and precision. There is also TetraMatic, a new fourblade saw set-up to cut composites in packs up to 220mm thick (310mm by special order) to generate big production increases, reduce labour costs and thereby to

Homag Improves Productivity for The Sash Window Workshop Based in Bracknell, The Sash Window Workshop provides customers with beautifully made, thermally efficient windows and doors that will work perfectly for 20 years or more. Excellence and attention to detail are watchwords for the business and managing director, Richard Dollar, is always looking for ways to improve the company’s quality and efficiency. It was this motivation that led him to invest in a 5-axis CNC processing centre and a sander from Homag UK. “Since we started the business in 1994,” explains Richard, “we have always employed experienced craftsmen. Our joiners are true professionals and turn out exceptional work. They are, however,
however, we were so impressed by the Homag machine we saw at one of our suppliers that we were confident enough to focus on Homag from the outset. This confidence was confirmed when we went out to Germany to meet the Homag engineers and see their production facility. “You cannot fail to be impressed with the set up over there. The quality of engineering and the calibre of the people are

Naturally, this came at an attractive price and, along with the Bütfering SWT 124 sander, made the whole deal very beneficial for our business. “Since the machines have been installed they have made a real difference to our business, speeding up production and improving the already high level of quality which is the hallmark of our business. “Whilst Homag’s easy to use woodWOP software can totally control the operation of the machine. At the front end, however, we prefer to use a specialist window industry software that we have used in the business for the last 15 years or so. This software links directly into woodWOP giving us the
best of both worlds and enabling us to machine window components very efficiently and accurately. “The clamping system that Homag installed on the router is perfect for holding our solid wood window components in multiples. The routine parts are now produced quicker and to a better standard than before, allowing our joiners to concentrate on the complex elements of each job. “Throughout the process, I have been impressed with everyone at Homag UK. Not once have they let us down; they do what they say they are going to do and are always friendly, helpful and very
professional in everything they undertake. I can’t recommend them highly enough and would urge anybody considering a 5-axis CNC machine or sander to talk to them first,” concludes Richard.

Several orders were placed after the in-house exhibition and interest has continued to increase. Many more Cube planers have now been installed in UK companies, but P & J Joinery is the first installation. INSTALLATION service they provide. The Company are prepared to machine any type of components for their customers – builders and private clients and give a complete joinery service for windows, doors, staircases, kitchen and bedroom furniture manufacture. They use traditional standard machines in their workshop and also used their Weinig Profimat 22N, very successfully for 22 years. So the new features on the Weinig Cube make it the ideal addition to the workshop, to keep up with the latest technology and to grow their business. Said Philip Nixey, Owner, “We chose Weinig because of the reliable German engineering we experienced on the Profimat and the prompt service backup we received over many years. The Cube provides many of the extra benefits we needed to attract more business. It is easy to use, fast, and more precise. We particularly needed its 260 x 160 mm specification, and were highly impressed by
its versatility, and saving in set-up time. In fact, the Cube also has numerous other practical new features such as: providing an energy saving of 60% in dust extraction, simple and fast knife changes on its ‘EasyLock’ system, and safer feeding of short pieces.” The Cube reinvents the planing operation. It is very fast, highly accurate and easy to use as never before, being equipped with new technology laser measuring and automatic adjustment for width and height. It is particularly suitable for smaller companies and those that currently use standard machines and traditional methods of 4-sided planing. It does not have to be run all day long to be profitable – as it is so productive, efficient and attractively priced. The Cube is very compact and is ideal where space in the workshop is tight. And it can easily be relocated by using hand– operated lift equipment. It does not require time consuming adjustments and
eliminates set-up error due to its part recognition technology. The operator has the added advantage of being able to adjust the machine dimensions whilst spindles are running. The Weeke BHX 050 Processing Centre – A Powerhouse with Homag’s New eSolution Software Concept The Weeke BHX 050 Optimat is a compact throughfeed drilling processing centre with an equally trim price tag from the Homag Group. It is the perfect drilling solution for all businesses whether small, medium or large. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of Homag UK explains, “The BHX 050 is an ideal CNC machining centre for producers of furniture whether it’s for the kitchen, bedroom or office. The unique advantage to the BHX 050 is that it is packed with all the features of a conventional CNC but, in taking up less than 5m2, it’s small enough to fit comfortably in any production facility. What’s more, with a price tag to suit, it is within reach of most producers. “This reliable 3-axis processing centre is equipped for all drilling needs. It can drill on five sides and is capable of grooving and routing at fast throughput rates whilst, at the same time, keeping energy bills down due to its low energy usage.” Highly Flexible The versatile BHX 050 is capable of

processing panels as small as 200 x 70 x 12mm up to panels as big as 2500 x 850 x 60mm with an option to increase this working length to 3050mm. Simon continues, “This machine can process any type of wood panel and is most commonly used for chipboard or MDF. We have, however, had situations where even demanding materials such as Trespa are being handled by this robust machine.” Capable of using a range of drills from 3mm – 35mm in diameter, the BHX 050 is supplied with a starter kit providing a variety of high quality drill bits and cutters to get the machine straight into production. A Real Time-Saver “With smaller machines it’s generally expected that processing time will become extended,” Simon continues, “however, the Weeke BHX 050 can match the rapid processing times of much larger machines.
Customers that have seen the BHX 050 put through its paces have been nothing but impressed by its capability. “Once the programming has been done, the set-up takes just seconds; it only requires the push of a pedal and press of a button to get it started. A really productive feature on the BHX 050 is the panel holding system. There are no vacuum pod or beam positions to worry about, the machine automatically positions the panel clamp correctly to suit each panel. All the operator has to do is load the parts – simple and efficient.” Packed with Typical Weeke Features “Although the BHX 050 is classed as an entry level machine, it comes with the usual features expected from a Weeke machine no compromises have been made on build quality or safety. “The machine features large transparent doors so the operator can see inside, to keep an eye on the process. With the operator in mind, these doors open fully to provide easy access to the heart of the machine for simple toolchanging. The inbuilt safety switches stop the machine from being started whilst the door is open.

Homag woodCAD|CAM software
“A recent development is the installation of pressure adjustment dials that enable the operator to control how much pressure is applied by the clamps to the wood in order to make sure that they do not cause any damage to the surfaces. This is particularly useful for companies wanting to process honeycomb panels or those with sensitive surfaces. “The BHX 050 maintains the full functionality of a CNC point to point machine whilst saving a great deal of space. The throughfeed concept, impressive panel size capacity and low price mean that it truly is a smart investment.” Optimisation with eSolution CAD|CAM “To give the BHX 050 an added boost, it can be optimised with Homag’s eSolution woodCAD|CAM,” explains Simon. “This new software delivers parametric furniture design in 3D and provides a direct link to the machine technology. “Immediately following the design process, production drawings and bills of
material can be created at the click of a mouse with design data automatically forwarded to Weeke BHX 050 machine. This means they are directly actuated with all the necessary parameters such as tool selection, drilling pattern, speed feed rate or approach strategy. “Regardless of whether you are working with dimensionally variable carcass furniture or complex furnishing items, such as counters, bars or reception desks, assemblies are generated in 3D complete with all their connections, processing operations and hardware. “At the same time, woodCAD|CAM creates drawings in a two or threedimensional view, including all crosssections and details for easy communication with architects and developers. “The system encompasses an integrated order and project management capability. This means planning and design data is calculated directly with material and production costs which can be read out in

various forms, such as a manufacturing cost calculation or a quotation template. “Not only is this software the modern way to produce furniture, it is also the only way forward if you want to remain competitive. WoodCAD|CAM is an extremely cost effective product and due to its modular design, customers only need purchase the parts relevant to their business. Combined with the Weeke BHX 050, they are a real powerhouse and this duo will give furniture manufacturers a real edge,” concludes Simon.

correct cup placing at a glance. “In addition a 14 or 18-slot plate changer increases the number of tools and units which can be directly accessed, thus reducing set-up times further. A saw blade with a diameter of up to 350mm can also be accommodated,” Simon adds. All inclusive high-end features “The Homag Venture 316 comes with high end equipment above and beyond that expected for this level of machine,” Simon continues. “Features include safety zone technology which enables dynamic alternating field sizes. This means that if you’re processing longer parts on one side of the machine, it’s still possible to prepare and position a shorter part on the other side, therefore saving time and increasing productivity. “The 316 features fluid cooled trimming spindles with hybrid bearings which offer a long service life. A really smart feature across the Homag CNC range is the intelligent vibration sensor system which detects tool imbalance and protects the
spindle from overload or damage.” For consistent drilling depth even on hard materials, the 316 has a drilling head with spindle locking mechanism. This patented system provides precision drilling depth every time. Spindle speeds range from 1,500 – 7,500 rpm for high feed rates and short drilling cycles of approximately 1.5 seconds. Equipped to meet future challenges “When investing in the 316, you are making a decision that protects you now and in the future. The machine is designed to grow with your business step by step. A wide range of optional extras guarantee this flexibility. “Various optional clamps, fixtures and vacuum pods are available to meet all machining requirements. The powerClamp is a really helpful option that clamps straight and curved parts through pneumatics rather than the machines vacuum system. This permits much higher clamping forces which are ideal for securing solid wood components.
See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com
“PowerClamps are perfect for arched windows, door frames, narrow strips and frame parts. For uprights and newel posts a special horizontal clamping device is offered to securely clamp them in position. “The optional corner notching unit is perfect for the production of right-angled, splinter-free, sharp-edged recesses where space is restricted, such as door apertures or sink cut-outs in kitchen worktops. “With low energy consumption due to the ecoPlus system and long machine service life, the Venture 316 is an extremely cost effective machine,” concludes Simon. “And, of course, with Homag Finance’s excellent range of finance options, you have the opportunity to take advantage of the benefits that this machine delivers immediately.”

timber into briquette blocks that are used on domestic fires. A large proportion of Auditoria’s work is as a preferred supplier to many of the UK’s leading developers along with Universities, Schools and Colleges throughout the UK. Their writing ledges, tables and under arm foldaway tablets for use in this sector are manufactured to meet the very demanding nature of today's educational environment whilst keeping a close eye on style and quality of finish. Previously, all panels manufactured by Auditoria were made out of MDF that required edge shaping, sanding and spray finishing but the final result often needed hand finishing on site. Auditoria's Managing Director, John Penistone Senior, comments "We wanted a better method to edge all our straight and curved panels and to be able to offer our customers a wider range of colours on both surfaces and edges. Because of the large dimensions of

some of our panels, small contour edge banders and trimming machines were not an option, and as we already had an SCM Sliding Table Panel Saw, we contacted SCM Group UK in Nottingham, to see what they could offer." After discussing their requirements with SCM UK's Area Sales Manager, Ian McCarthy, Auditoria were quoted a Morbidelli CNC Combined Routing and Edge Banding Machining Centre, model Universal HPL Edge, and after demonstrations, an order was placed for delivery in the Spring of 2011, just before Auditoria's busy production period. The Universal HPL Edge has a heavyduty construction with a highly rigid closed structure and a mobile upright that ensures the machining unit has a balanced support, is stable and is resistant to the most severe machining conditions for high performance and precision. On it are mounted an 8.5 KW routing head with a Rapid 18-position rear mounted automatic tool changer, a 26-spindle vertical and horizontal drilling unit and edge banding equipment, with movement in the 'X' and 'Z' axes on prismatic guides with recirculating ball screws. The machine has a 4900 x 1850mm
table with 2 working areas for pendulum machining, and with 12 aluminium support bars on which a range of differently dimensioned vacuum cups can be quickly located to accept the loading of tops and panels for machining. Digital displays on each support bar for rapid positioning of the bars in 'X' axis and the vacuum cups in 'Y' axis allow for very fast setting up times. A new, removable, aluminium solid work table has been supplied that will enable the nesting of panels, as and when required, to be carried out. This table is in 3 sections for ease of loading on to the machine, and it will be mounted on the lower vacuum cups, each section having its own high volume vacuum feed from the vacuum manifold and 2 - 250mc/hour vacuum pumps. The edge gluing unit optimises the glue consumption and improves quality. The 5 Kg capacity glue tank, easily removable to change glue or colour, is equipped with a sensor to ensure it is continually being topped up with new glue, thus maintaining its adhesive qualities. The edging materials are automatically fed to the edge banding unit from a magazine that has a capacity of 6 different edgings or colours that can be selected individually and fed automatically to the

application head. Auditoria use 2mm thick PVC edging. Heating lamps keep the edging flexible when rounding sharp corners. Sensors measure the exact length of edging to be applied and the length is automatically cut with an integrated saw unit with an 8 degree angle, ensuring an exact and perfect joint without any overlapping of the edging material. Trimming of the top and bottom edges is performed by a special combined trimming and scraping unit facility fed from the tool changer, therefore saving changeover times, the tools automatically adjusting themselves for panel thicknesses of 16mm up to 60mm. Programming is carried out by the Morbidelli's machine operators using Genio CAD/CAM supplied by SCM. General Manager, John Penistone Junior, concludes "We are very impressed with the Morbidelli and the installation by SCM's engineers. As this was very new technology to us, we had a few initial hic-cups, but from then on, and with the help of SCM engineers, especially Andy McKenzie, the machine has provided us with all our straight and curved panels with a very high degree of finish quality that our customers are impressed with, and we can now offer them whatever they want in terms of shapes and colours."

DUST EXTRACTION EU says OELs on Hardwood Dust Must Come Down ... but is it Enforceable? Steve Matuska at Dustraction reports that the EU is planning possible revisions to Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) which will reduce hardwood dust in the workplace from 5mg/m3 to 3mg/m3 - or possibly even as low as 1mg/m3. This is all part of an EU revision of the Carcinogens & Mutagens Directive and following an 18 month implementation programme, revisions at one level or another could become law in the UK in 2014. Steve’s reaction is that such a regulation would be virtually unenforceable. “The problem”, he believes, “is that the HSE, who will probably head up negotiations on behalf of the UK, are out of touch with reality and don’t have the resources to police any such standards.” “I doubt that equipment supplied by the UK LEV industry is any different to that in France, Belgium ... or anywhere else,” he says. “So the ability to meet an improved OEL standard, here or in mainland Europe, is either based on better work practices and training or different measuring methodology - or is perhaps just the usual paying of lip
service to the law.” Wally Gilder, one of Dustraction’s UK trading partners at Flextraction in Leicester, continues: “A difference between UK and Europe could be that air recirculation is banned in some Euro countries. I would question whether it is known what current working levels actually are in the UK since probably 95% of all installations are never measured - even though it is a requirement for carcinogens. And even if money were made available to subsidise OEL reductions in the UK, what different or better equipment and services are there available?” “So far as I know,” Steve Matuska continues, “there is no way to distinguish between hard and soft wood dust so existing methods to measure
Around 2.5 tons of MDF waste is dealt with by Dustraction per hour at SAM Mouldings in Antrim, eliminating annual energy costs of £230,000 and waste disposal costs of £300,00 - quite apart from earning £35,000 annually in electricity generation. Factory process heating is a by-product
inhalable dust of any kind will come up with different results. In France, I believe, wood and panel processors are subsidised to get down as low as 1mg/m3 while British manufacturers are not - and that too makes for a somewhat uneven playing field. “Perhaps,” he concludes, “the EU have a control system that works better than the existing CoSHH legislation?”

DUST EXTRACTION Study in Green Extraction at University Design School Dust Control Systems Ltd has installed an energy-saving dust extraction system at Loughborough University’s newly-built Design School building. Renowned for the very highest quality of research and teaching, the Design School undertakes a broad spectrum of design-related programmes ranging from product design to engineering design. The new state-of-the-art building includes design studios, research, teaching and IT laboratories, a lecture theatre/auditorium, offices and meeting rooms, exhibition spaces and two wellequipped prototyping workshops. The two workshops comprise a wood preparation shop, located on the ground floor, and a wood machine shop, housed on the second floor. Equipment in the wood preparation shop is restricted to use by university technical staff and includes a wall saw, dimension saw, crosscut saw, two routers, planer, thicknesser and a grooving machine. Within the machine shop there are a total of 24 woodworking, sanding and finishing machines which are made available to students to utilise in the construction of design prototypes.
The requirement for a dust extraction system was set out by mechanical and electrical contractors, Imtech G&H, and called for an internally-sited filter capable of extracting from all machines on both floors. It was also an essential requirement that the system must provide low-noise operation and be energy-efficient to run. A major constraint placed on the plant’s design and installation was that the filter and fans would have to fit into very limited space on the ground floor. Also, the route for ducting between floors had been established when the building was designed and meant that all main ductwork had to in place ahead of other trades. DCS designed a scheme which centres round a custom-built bag filter that perfectly fits the available space, and features their computerised ECOGATE® energy-saving extraction optimisation system. The high-efficiency bag filter has a capacity of 23,000m3/hr and is fitted with 160 tubular polyester needle-felt filter bags - ideal for collection of many different types of dust. Filter cleaning is by ‘shaker system’ and waste is collected in quick- release bins beneath each filter section. As the filter is housed inside the building it is fitted with

spark detection equipment to prevent the possibility of fire by spark ignition. The system employs two main fansets – 7.5kW for the wood preparation shop and 22kW for the machine shop. Energy saving measures involved the fitting of variable speed drives to each fan, and machines in the workshops were fitted with ECOGATE automatic motorised gates with sensors. The system employs two ECOGATE greenBOX12 controllers in the machine shop and one in the wood preparation workshop. The sensors signal the controller to open or close gates as machines come on line or shut down. The greenBOX12 detects changes in extraction load and adjusts the variable speed fan drive accordingly. The result is a highlyefficient dust extraction system, which operates at reduced noise levels, and provides precise extraction volumes only when needed. It is expected that the ECOGATE ‘on-demand’ system will reduce power usage by around 60% when compared with a traditional fixed-speed system. DUST EXTRACTION £20,000 A Year Savings Feels Like Lottery Win For UK Company Point Eight Ltd, the UK’s leading designer and manufacturer of award winning libraries and commercial interior fit out company, has chosen Wood Waste Technology Ltd to supply and install two wood waste heaters for its West Midlands production facility. Point Eight Ltd has purchased two WT15 wood waste heaters for its factory in Dudley, West Midlands. The units will dispose of all wood off-cuts saving money on skip costs, plus each heater will produce around 145kw/hr (500,000btu/hr) of heat, thereby reducing Point Eight’s factory heating costs throughout the cold winter months. After investigating different wood waste heater options and suppliers, Point Eight’s Managing Director, Andrew Wall, ordered the units from Wood Waste Technology, due to the company’s excellent reputation, outstanding after-sales service and keen prices. Since the wood waste heaters have been
installed, Point Eight has estimated savings of around £13,000 on skip costs and about £7,000 on fuel bills each year. Mr Wall says, “We have been looking for a solution to our wood waste for a while and are delighted to have found this solution to our problem which will deliver such immediate savings. After viewing many different working models on various sites, we heard glowing reports about the robust, heavy duty units produced by Wood Waste Technology. As we visited the manufacturing facility to find out more, we were impressed with the quality of the products and how competitively priced they were against others in the marketplace.” With Point Eight’s factory located in a built-up area, one of Point Eight’s concerns was about pollution from burning wood waste. However, Wood Waste Technology’s WT range is fully certified to be installed in clean air zones without the use of an afterburner, saving around £2500 on the

initial purchase cost and around £2000 per annum in running costs compared to competitor units, making the payback period the quickest in the market place today. Installation of the 2 units was expertly managed by Wood Waste Technology’s engineers, who managed to install both units in one day, with no disruption to Point Eight’s production. Point Eight’s Logistics Manager, Paul Bailey explains, “The machines are a real asset to our business. They burn so clean and the workforce is over the moon with the nice warm workshop. I’ve worked out these heaters will pay for themselves in about 12 months, and save the company around £100,000 over 5 years. The savings on gas and skip charges means we’ll be able to buy another CNC machine for the workshop. It feels like we’ve won the lottery!” Managing Director of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft comments,”We believe in providing affordable solutions to ever increasing waste and heating charges, and keeping payback periods to a minimum. We also pride ourselves on our outstanding after-sales and service departments, as this is an area of the business that we feel is as important as the initial purchase.” Wood Waste Technology manufactures a wide range of heaters to suit all size companies, from small hand fired units to fully automatic systems. The company handles everything from site survey and design, to manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance, servicing all types of wood waste heaters and supplying genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. ‘Business is Stronger at the ‘Posh’ End Of The Market‘ So says director Ed Tremlett at Touchwood Interiors in Clyst St Mary, just outside Exeter, who are currently investing in better manufacturing and management systems and whose order book remains strong with residential and hotel fit-out work at the top end of the market. Among workshop upgrades are a new tubular sock-style of woodwaste extraction filter which has been installed by Dustraction; Ed says it has transformed the work-place and is having a very positive effect on working conditions on the shop floor. “The system we were running with, before Dustraction came in and sorted us out, was coming to the end of its service life; the filter was also inside the workshop so it didn’t perform with anything like the efficiency of current technology - and, of course, it was noisy. Now the filter is externally sited, much more efficient and all the pipe-work and connections are also bang up to date; the overall effect is very positive indeed.” That the shop floor is ‘bang up to date’ is important, says Ed, because Touchwood is aiming at interior designers and architects with furniture and interior fit-out projects that combine traditional drawing with fine cabinet making skills plus state of the art CAD drafting and production techniques. Touchwood is taking quality contracts from design right through manufacturing and on to full project management, so customers like to know who they’re dealing with in shop floor terms when they attend for discussions. In fact, the Exeter company is extremely well-equipped, producing both traditional and contemporary bespoke work of exceptional quality for private residences and hotel contracts throughout the West country, Home Counties and London. Traditional wood machines from Wadkin, Griggio and Stenner – including four sided moulders, planers, thicknessers and spindles - line up alongside up-to-the

minute wall saws by Striebig and CNC technology from Homag. Dustraction have also installed one of their downdraught denibbing benches in the finishing shop. To cope with increasing volumes of hardwood dust, Dustraction have installed a No. 27 four section filter unit with the latest bagging base which includes rear inlets to improve distribution of outgoing waste and to counteract unevenness that is the bugbear of all bagging filters. A manual over-ride has also been fitted on the automatic shaker mechanism that dislodges caked waste in the fabric filter tubes so that the new Dustraction set-up can be used to serve the whole of the shop floor, or individual machines as required. Dustraction’s No. 27 filter unit is now sited externally so that noise is no longer an issue; it is also housed in a new acoustic enclosure designed by Dustraction and installed by them for purposes of sound reduction. The whole of the new Touchwood dust installation falls within current Health and Safety requirements, and full COSHH LEV tests will now be

undertaken on a 14 monthly basis to include all shop floor areas together with Touchwood’s existing spray shop. Dustraction have also tested and either upgraded or replaced all dust gates and ducting connections throughout the manufacturing layout. Ed Tremlett is delighted with the service from Dustraction and also, of course, the improved performance of his woodwaste collection and disposal. “We found Dustraction as helpful and accommodating as we could have wished; the engineers in particular were a delight to work with, responding to special requests and off-plan modifications with the sort of enthusiasm that isn’t often found in this day and age.”

INSTALLATION Brilliant Kündig Sander at Dee Valley Dee Valley Joinery is a manufacturer of quality bespoke timber products, “where custom-made is standard”. Priding itself on being “large enough to cope, yet small enough to care”, Dee Valley Joinery has built a reputation based on manufacturing and supplying a high quality product, where success has largely been based on customer satisfaction. Established in 1987, a highly skilled team of woodworking machinists and joiners operate in the company’s custom built premises in Aberdeen, equipped with some of the most modern machinery and equipment in Scotland. This includes a Kündig Brilliant sander which, according to company proprietor Lennie Georgeson, “works as well today as the day it was installed back in 2006”. Lennie became aware in 2004 that his previous sander was not performing as he would like and began researching alternatives. He originally learned of the Kündig range through reading about it in a trade journal, but he also views trade exhibitions as an important opportunity to see and compare different machines “in the flesh”, as it were. His search for a new sander took him to Holz-Handwerk in Nurmberg in 2004, to Ligna in 2005 and back to Nurmberg in 2006. There he met Carl

initial enquiry to measuring premises, design, quotation, manufacture and installation by their own staff. Joint Managing Director, Gani Mawji, comments "After our move to larger premises, we realised our existing edge bander was not up to the job as we had just received an order for a large contract. We made several calls to potential edge bander suppliers, finding out that SCM UK had a Stefani machine in stock. We travelled to Nottingham, where SCM's engineer, John Wilson, did an excellent demonstration, so we placed an order there and then." "Two days later, the Stefani Solution was delivered to the Kingfisher Interiors premises with SCM engineer Dan Long on hand to commence immediate installation and commissioning, so we were up and running in no time at all." The Solution - 106 is a very high specification machine running at up to 25metres/min. At the infeed are sizing and moulding units that can shape the edges of panels for the softforming process when required. This is followed by a powerful

edge milling unit with twin 4KW motors that machines the vertical edges of panels prior to gluing, with diamond cutters for longevity, providing a perfect edge for gluing, taking out any imperfections when the panel was sawn or damaged in storage. After the panel edge is machined, the edge is glued using the special gluing system. Glue pellets are transferred from a hopper, pre-melted and then transferred to the gluepot where a sensor reads when the glue is down to a level that requires more glue adding, perfect when continuously edging long panels. Edging materials supplied in roll form, 2 or 3mm ABS/PVC or melamine is applied from a vertical multi-position magazine with auto changeover. Solid wood lippings or laminate can also be applied. A series of vertical pressure rollers for applying the edging material follow, or a system of rollers that can be adjusted to any soft-formed shape. An upper edge trimming unit, YU-SP, with blade
inclination cuts the edging material exactly to the front and rear ends of the panels. A top and bottom edge trimming unit followed by an RSU fine finishing trimming unit with quick release motors/cutters enables fast changeover as and when required. For the rounding of the corners of panels with 2 or 3mm ABS/PVC applied, a C1 and C2 corner rounding unit provides an excellent finish. An edge scraping unit precedes a buffing unit and a brightening kit for panel edges. The Solution - 106 has the very latest PC Control System with "Winedge Plus" software to enable fast and easy programming and the re-call of programs to ensure fast setting-up between jobs, the movement of all operating units and height control of the upper pressure beam when the board thickness changes. To enable one man operation of the Stefani, a return conveyor receives the panel at the outfeed of the edge bander and

returns it to the operator at the infeed, so the second, third and fourth sides can be edged if and as required. Joint Managing Director, Sunny Dayal, concludes "We are very impressed with the Stefani edge bander from SCM UK, who reacted to our urgent requirement for the machine to be delivered, installed and commissioned within 2 days of us placing an order. HANDLING
Aisle-Master - Indoors, Outdoors and for Doors Distinction Door Solutions is the leading supplier of GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester) entrance doors to the UK market. The company has recently taken delivery of two AisleMaster articulated forklift trucks to ensure the seamless handling and storage of its stock of 25,000 door blanks, 80,000 glazing cassettes and other components in its warehousing facility in Barnsley. Following an expansion of the business Distinction Door Solutions opened a new warehouse earlier in the year for the bulk storage of raw materials, doubling the footprint to 80,000 ft . This is located across the yard from the original store which houses finished doors, so any forklifts working on site need to be able to travel easily and quickly between the two buildings to ensure a steady flow of goods. This was not the case until the AisleMasters were brought in as Operations Manager Dennis Bird explains: “The reach trucks we were using were not really up to the demands of outside operation – we had problems with damage to the tyres, and regular breakdowns were seriously impacting on our productivity. When we opened the new facility we realised we had to look at something more robust and reliable to ensure the supply of over 5,000 doors a week to our customers around the country.” Ability Handling has been advising the company on handling and storage issues for around 10 years, and Lee Brown recommended the Aisle-Masters due to the trucks’ versatility to work equally well indoors and out as well as their proven track record of extreme dependability. The reach trucks were withdrawn earlier than scheduled and replaced with two narrow chassis AC electric powered 1.5t capacity 15E Aisle-Master models on a 5 year rental

contract, resulting in vastly improved operations. The 15E model is a new addition to AisleMaster’s range, and designed for companies handling lighter loads in low bay applications and can also work in block stacking applications. It therefore perfectly suited Distinction Doors’ requirements as the finished product is not overly heavy, is stored to a top beam height of 5500mm, and the raw materials are block stacked. With a chassis width of just over 1m, the trucks are able to work in extremely narrow aisles, but due to the dimension of the doors, which are around 2m in length, more generous aisle space has been allocated for easy manouevering. “The Aisle-Masters are the all-round solution,” says Dennis. “They can offload in the yard, commute easily between the two buildings and give us peace of mind that we can fulfill our customer commitments.” Aisle-Masters have capacities of up to 2.5 tonnes, lift heights of up to 12.5 metres, with a choice of AC electric or LPG power.
The range is designed and built at the dedicated production facility of its parent company Combilift in Monaghan, Ireland, and can be customised for individual requirements. Aisle-Master design engineers also offer a site visit and warehouse layout service and supply free layout proposals illustrating how to maximise the use of available storage space.

The Buck Stops With Alphacam A wooden buck was an essential factor in the success of a specialist one-off racing car. And the Cambridgeshire woodworking company that produced it says it was a real case of wood ensuring that metal can do its job properly. Andy Mitchell, proprietor of Mitchell Motors in Wiltshire, wanted a unique car in the spirit of a 1950s classic racing car which he could use both on the road and on racing circuits. He came up with the Mitchell Special MK 11, based on a shortened version of the box-section Bristol chassis, but with a new spaceframe of his own design. Once the body shape had been finalised following extensive CAD work, he called on dedicated CNC routing specialists The Cutting Room to create the wooden former for proving out the metalwork. In a bygone racing era, Italian craftsmen at Touring, Zagato and Scaglietti would have painstakingly hand-crafted a full-sized wooden body buck from solid elm to help their metalworkers form the finished bodywork for their cars. But instead of having to hire such skilled specialist workers, Andy Mitchell only had to email his CAD file to The Cutting Room, based at Huntingdon, and within 36 hours they had produced the birchwood ply profiles, using
Alphacam to create the toolpaths. The profiles fitted together to form the rigid 3D former, to which the panel beater could offer up each metal sheet as it came off the wheeling machine to eliminate any uncertainty over whether corners matched, or the wheel arches and door apertures corresponded. A wheeling machine enables a metal craftsman to form double curvature curves from flat sheetmetal. Panels produced this way are expensive, but it has the key advantage that it can flexibly produce different panels using the same machine. It is used wherever low volumes of compound curved panels are required; typically in spaceframe chassis racing cars such as the Mitchell Special, car prototypes, car restoration, coachbuilding and aircraft skin components. To keep costs to a minimum, it was essential that the bodywork was absolutely right first time, and this was where the accuracy of the wooden buck came in. Cutting Room partner Mark Durey says: “Without the buck the car could not have been made to the high standard it was. So the buck had to be absolutely perfect. It’s formed through 2D interlocking cuts, and we had to put in a vertical slice wherever it
The Mitchell Special MK11
was needed, creating a cross hatch. We had to make sure all the joints were correct and that only one edge of the board would touch the metal’s surface smoothly.” Once The Cutting Room had received Andy Mitchell’s CAD file, they used Alphacam to nest the profiles on sheets of birchwood ply and create accurate toolpaths. But Mark Durey says Alphacam’s role did not end there. “We used Alphacam’s tagging facility on some of the smaller parts, raising the cut to hold the components steady, like Airfix parts are held in place. Although we were creating a lot of small parts, tagging effectively makes them one large part, ensuring absolute accuracy and increases the cutting speed.” The profiles were machined on an Anderson Duo – one of The Cutting Room’s three CNC routers; the others being an SCM Record 220 and SCM Routomat 3. Each piece of the plywood assembly was numbered and coded so the buck could be disassembled for storage, or packed flat and transported at minimal cost. The buck also gives an accurate pattern which can be used in the future if the car ever suffers accident damage. When The Cutting Room got their first CNC router they were putting the code in by hand and working out the dimensions on graph paper. “Then I saw how Alphacam would be ideal for putting our toolpaths in, so I bought it straight away. That was about 20 years ago, and I’ve used Alphacam ever since as it’s absolutely the best software for our needs,” says Mark Durey.

REPORT FIRA Report Shows the Economic and Environmental Impact of Biomass The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) have compiled a report to the Government on its approach to providing energy producers with subsidies for burning Biomass (wood) and how this is pushing up the price of wood which is seriously damaging the competitiveness of most of the furniture industry. On Monday 12 December, the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) and the British Furniture Confederation (BFC) held a meeting at the House of Lords in December to launch the report commissioned by FIRA that focuses on the Renewables Obligation Woody Biomass Subsidy and the detrimental affect it is having on British manufacturing. The launch event enabled FIRA and the BFC to share the report with parliament, and appropriate Ministers and MPs were invited. This report is the outcome of a number of Biomass Summits held at FIRA earlier this year. These events brought together key industry leaders to discuss how government subsidies encouraging power companies to burn wood, are distorting the market for new timber, thereby forcing up prices for the
manufacturing of furniture products. The woody biomass report will now be used to lobby the Government on behalf of the furniture industry. This document outlines a series of recommendations on how the Government can ensure that manufacturers are allowed to continue business without facing the difficulty of coping with rising prices from the woody biomass subsidy distortion. The report also explains how the biomass subsidy is having a negative economic impact within the UK furniture industry. Following the introduction of biomass subsidies, wood prices have risen by 55.1 per cent over the past 5 years, having a significant impact on furniture production margins. With increased costs for furniture production, an increase in jobs losses is also likely. Many manufacturers are based in rural areas where unemployment is already high and there are limited employment opportunities. As a result, if the UK wood panel industry was to disappear, 4,400 jobs would be lost. With increased costs for furniture production, it follows that furniture product

prices for the consumer will also increase. This is especially poignant as the subsidy paid for burning renewable fuel is paid by consumers through their electricity bill. This means consumers are paying for a renewable energy form which distorts the market perversely against them as both a consumer and also to British manufacturing. Over its life time, burning woody biomass also emits significantly greater CO2 than wood panel manufacturing. The report suggests that the biomass subsidy should not encourage the burning of virgin wood, which could be used productively through its lifecycle, before being burnt for fuel. It encourages that furniture at the end of its lifecycle is burnt for fuel, rather than placed in landfill. Furthermore, the report discusses how biomass stations relying on wood imports from abroad are a threat to the world’s forests and may even increase climatechange emissions. Stephen McPartland MP spoke at the parliamentary launch event, in his capacity as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group. The Chair of the British Furniture Confederation, Paul Von der Heyde also spoke.

DECORATIVE SURFACES & EDGING The Strength of Oak from David Clouting Ltd The old maxim 'to stand still is to go backwards' can be seen to be clearly understood by David Clouting Ltd, which continues to innovate and keep pace with the latest fashion trends. The most recent example of this is the company's introduction of its Saw Cut versions of Golden Odessa Oak (KUYJ02-T3) and Grey Odessa Oak (KUYJ01-T3) Decofoil designs, clearly displaying the intention to build on its success in recent years by maintaining its leading position through the established practice of constant innovation. David Clouting's Odessa Oak Saw Cut options feature realistic surface texturing which, combined with authentic wood grain reproduction, provides customers with all the benefits of access to cutting edge trends without any of the environmental drawbacks. The fact that no trees have been harvested can be seen as an important environmental factor in using Decofoil. Working with Design – immediate response for DIMA Right from the off it looks like visitors to W12 Working with Design at the NEC in October will have something special to look forward to. The launch last month of the Design In Manufacturing Awards (DIMA) has had an instant an encouraging response from exhibitors eager to enter show products of distinction, original ideas and concepts that will help their customers to produce solutions of commercial excellence. Exhibition organisers Huddlestone have now posted the details for entries along with entry forms on the W12 website (www.w12exhibtion.com). The information includes conditions of entry, rules as well as advantages to entrants. As previously publicised the eminent judging panel has been announced and judging will take place in September with the closing date for entries on July 31. In essence there will be one entry allowed per exhibitor and these will take the form of a written product description including all reasons for inclusion in this specific competition. Up to 3 images can accompany each entry and company logo as well. Any queries or clarification should be directed to Matt Long at matt@kyalami.co.uk. There are already entries coming in and it seems that exhibitors have taken a good grasp of the DIMA concept. The entries received all display different levels and directions in which their products will make a quantifiable commercial and quality difference to any final product in which they’re included. This takes the form of purely aesthetic originality or a combination of design and performance that will differentiate and enhance the final product. Other entries display functional performance at a superior level and also not so visible advantages like eco-friendly sources of supply where real environmental

progress can be demonstrated. Trading is difficult in the current climate and any advantages that manufacturers can gain in terms of adding value to and differentiate their product when it comes to taking to market helps to protect margins and also gain new areas for business growth. These are the companies that will emerge from tough times with a distinct lead and lay the foundations for future success. This is what Working with Design and DIMA specifically is all about.
For exhibitors and visitors alike W12 Working with Design – running alongside the W12 Working with Wood – will be a new, refreshing and mutually beneficial experience. Don’t miss it and keep the DIMA entries coming in!

Active design from EDP at W12 EDP, leading UK supplier of quality foils, veneers, edging and components, will use the occasion of W12 Working with Design in October to introduce a “working” exhibit where visitors can move displays around and experiment with putting different colours, texture, finishes and patterns together. “We don’t want the stand to be merely a shop window” explains EDP’s Terry Willett “it’s important for visitors to become involved with the whole design concept and walk away with something tangible for the future”. EDP say that the entire philosophy of the Working with Design concept as show where cutting edge design can be evaluated and appreciated for its central contribution to manufacturing is what the industry has been looking for. “We will only be showing new innovations and designs on the stand – materials that can take UK manufacturing forwards.” “The introduction of the Design in Manufacturing Awards is very exciting and positive” adds Terry Willett “EDP will definitely be entering this Awards completion.” See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com
WHAT’S NEW New Flat Laminating Solution For High Gloss Foils The growing trend towards production of high gloss surfaces within the interiors and furniture sectors has placed new requirements on processes and products. Kleiberit, a European leader in hot melt adhesives, has developed a new range of high performance hot melts specifically developed for bonding high gloss foils to wood based panels. The company states that its new technology offers unequalled aesthetic appearance at a competitive cost. The benefits offered when compared with conventional adhesives also include low operating temperature, low coat weights, minimal heat degradation, and excellent bond properties over a wide range of substrates. The foils commonly used are available in different thicknesses and quality, in sheet form, or as rolled material. The foil construction is often in the form of a combination of decorative layers (e.g. ABS, PVC) with a transparent and high gloss top layer (e.g. PMMA). The cost of these high gloss foils increases with thickness, hence there is a growing move within the market towards use of thinner foils. The problem is, the thinner the foil the more difficult it is to achieve a perfectly smooth aesthetic appearance and the more critical is the surface preparation of the wood-based substrate.
In order to give a perfect finish when laminating thin and high gloss foils to flat panels, Kleiberit has developed a special processing solution involving panel, substrate, adhesive and foil. It includes the development of a special range of PUR hot melt adhesives, together with the use of roller bar slot nozzle technology. In the Kleiberit European Technical Center, these processing technologies are available for viewing by interested parties. Product development and customer demonstrations can be conducted in the technical centre by mimicking full-scale production. The specially developed PUR hot melts from Kleiberit have been perfectly
formulated for bonding high gloss foils and they give many benefits including: • Excellent application properties. • Optimal smoothing in the coating process. • Good universal adhesion properties, e.g. to ABS and PVC. • High green strength. • Perfect aesthetic appearance especially with high gloss and thin foils. • Application with roller coater or slot nozzle with roller bar.

Bellissimo’s Five-Piece range: the best yet “I defy anyone to tell this apart from solid timber” says Bellissimo Managing Director Warnock Watson of the company’s new Five-Piece vinyl wrapped kitchen range. Five-Piece, so called because it comprises five separately wrapped elements, rather than a less-authentic single structure, comes in 11 finishes and is made-tomeasure. Curves in six height options are available for all finishes. Five-Piece is based on machined MDF, for the smoothest results. There is a choice of four walnuts, three oaks, two ivories (one solid, the other woodgrain), a beech and “mussel”. “As always, we have chosen everything
from the moulding to the vinyl quality and colours with utmost care, accounting for current trends and marketing predictions. The five-piece style is so important in the UK, but to exploit its potential fully, you need to pick the right finishes and offer the utmost flexibility in sizes and formats. Our new range is the designer’s ideal companion when targeting a huge slice of the British kitchen market.”

Huge Interest at ZOW for Decorative Panels Decorative Panels are pleased to announce their most successful ZOW show to date. The reaction to their high gloss range at ZOW has been extremely positive offering exciting prospects for Decorative Panels Lamination. The stand displayed their Specialist Materials, including an extensive high gloss offer and inhouse produced dp-lite, a hollowcore board. Displayed on hanging rails were large samples providing visitors

to the stand an excellent platform to view products on a ‘look and feel’ basis. Visitors commented on this style of displaying product saying “being able to see a sample this size gives us a much better idea of how our final product could actually look, it allows a much better visualisation.” Attracting particular interest were some new developments on the Senoplast acrylic product. Firstly, a new “hardcote”
system, which Senoplast call TopX was on show and rigorous rubbing with wire wool, proved how fantastically resilient this new product is – certainly more than adequate for counter tops and horizontal surfaces. Secondly, Senoplast have now developed a 0.5mm acrylic product which gives very nearly the same surface finish but which can be offered as a more economical alternative compared to the established thicker product.
See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com
DECORATIVE SURFACES For more information on both of these products contact Decorative Panels Lamination on the details below. Additionally new developments on trend were on show, with the main focus being on attractive ‘super matt’ vinyl finishes.
