products released to market will include Roofdek, a coated roofing panel designed to withstand the elements, SiteCoat, a filled and primed OSB hoarding panel and Buildboard a smooth faced OSB panel designed as a ‘plywood substitute’. Formed in 1998 as a start up by MD Jean Richardson, TFS is now a multi-million pound turnover business. Jean Richardson is understandably proud of the company and its achievements and said: “Trust, commitment and hard work have been the bedrock of our success. Without the trust of our customers, commitment of suppliers and sheer hard work shown by my loyal staff we would not be celebrating this milestone.”

Fittingly in the year they celebrate reaching ‘15 years in business’ milestone, Trade Fabrication Systems (TFS) has continued its highly successful collaboration with world leading manufacturer of wood-based panel products, Norbord by developing a brand new portfolio of high-tec timber products for the building market. TFS a processor of coated and laminated timber-based products has worked closely with Norbord since 1998. The new

Organisers of Timber Expo announced that the 2013 exhibition was the most successful in the in the event’s three year history. A total of 4,611 visitors attended – an increase of 9% on 2012. 58% of exhibitors signed contracts at the show for the 2014 exhibition which will be co-locating with W14 at the NEC – October 7 & 8th. The W14 Show will be on from October 5th – 8th. This move has been welcomed by the many visitors who will now be able to see both shows on a single visit. Pressure On W14 Space Blum appears on the W14 floor plan alongside other industry leaders and Timber Expo draws alongside the show. Our industry’s 2014 exhibition is indeed preparing to meet the economic upswing. As a reader of Panel and Joinery production you will be at the NEC for W14 which is being staged in the autumn of 2014. The show ranks amongst the largest manufacturing events in the UK and has been established for 30 years as the focal point for our industries. You can’t move far along an aisle without meeting some industry character that you know! The organisers of any national show will be the first to recognise a need to keep the event up with the needs of the industry, always in touch with times. When that event only happens every 2 years as is the case with W14 then it’s even more essential. Thankfully, W14 organisers Huddlestone

have been well aware of this and the 2014 is refreshed in the light of more cheerful predictions for the industry. With house building now very much back on the agenda for post-recession UK it’s time to look to the construction sector for the long

awaited growth. Of course, we know that Timber will have a major part to play in any building programme, its sustainability and ‘green’ credentials are not dimmed in the slightest by the recession. It’s also a really fashionable and beautiful product.

EVENTS

W14 will be highlighting design in materials and components

Good news then that the timber building specifiers exhibition, Timber Expo, decided to re-locate from the provincial Ricoh site to the unarguably centre stage of NEC. Even better that the organisers of W14 and NEC have realised the importance of bringing their two exhibitions together in Birmingham. The resulting platform will provide a fantastic opportunity for exhibitors and visitors alike, combining furniture and construction production elements and showing the clear value which can be gained by visiting the NEC in early October 2014 for this massive event. The show underlines its growth by refreshing with a single new logo to reflect the wide W14 umbrella. At the same time,

its successful highlighting of design in materials and components is maintained with a series of initiatives and publicity which will enable visitors to see the best in ‘bought in design’ opportunities on the UK market. With exhibitors of the stature of Blum, REHAU and David Clouting on the W14 floor planning impressive showings it’s always going to be a ‘must-see’ event. Again, driven the by the industry and its diversity, W14 is encouraging exhibitors to style their displays without restriction, within only the bounds of practicality. This means that companies with special areas of co-operation, for example machinery and materials suppliers working together, will be able to appear on the floor together.

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

Equally, for those materials and component suppliers looking for a little quiet from the machinery hub bub will be able to do so in designated areas around pure design features. This will be a show to celebrate breadth and fluidity so vital to competing on a world stage. Given the ability of visitors to flow freely between the shows it’s pretty certain that many new faces, with a lot of business influence, will be seen in the W14 aisles. Specifiers arriving as part of the expected 5,000 people visiting Timber Expo will naturally also be able to see the stunning things being done with boards and surfaces at W14. When people with shared interests get together at a national event with hands on chances to see products good business can only result. So, W14 and Timber Expo might be understood as two separate events, each with their focus, but that would be to underestimate the possibilities arising by creating such a central event to germinate ideas, conversation and business. W14 event director Angela McGowan sees the most significant sector exhibition in memory. “Enthusiasm for the co-location is already huge, and amazingly visitor registrations are pouring onto the web site with virtually a year to go before the doors open. With the presence of Timber Expo visitors boosting interest from the construction sector and the likes of Blum showing for the first time on the furniture side this really has raised the bar”. For exhibitors, less than 20% of the space remains and Angela expects a sell-out. “The rapidly improving economic climate, certainty of a larger show and early booking of key names suggests we are only going to be limited by hall space available “she says. The organisers have promised a complete concentration on the ability to do business at W14. The exhibition is already known for its ability to bring together suppliers and manufacturers who simply did not know of each other’s capabilities and the watchword for 2014 is to dramatically further that reputation. With a following wind now in the economy and the new prominence of W14, that timing should be perfect.

EVENTS Weinig Profiling Theme Day Door To The Future Of Production Technology Opened Wide Around 100 customers from all over Europe accepted the invitation of the world market leader in machines and systems for solid wood processing to come to Tauberbischofsheim for a comprehensive update on trends and developments in planing and profiling. The primary focus of the event was on innovative solutions for large dimensions. In the Technology Park ExpoCenter, experts used presentations and demonstrations to illustrate how simply, efficiently and flexibly customers can use Weinig systems for the most diverse applications. Starting with the latest generation of moulders with CNC-controlled axes and high-performance PowerCom controls, presentations also included wood-saving technology as well as the latest version of the popular application of structured planing. The people at Tauberbischofsheim are particularly proud of the planing, free from "snipes" and "dips", which uses angled spindles and is becoming

increasingly popular on the market. Depending on capacity, the reduced chip removal can yield savings in the order of millions of euros, says Michael Mosner, Sales Director of the Weinig Product Unit Profiling. Another key topic of the Theme Day was organization of the machine environment. With MillVisionPro, Weinig has a true ace up its sleeve in this department. The production software optimizes processes, reduces throughput times and lowers production costs. A similar increase in efficiency is guaranteed by the new Moulder Master. The software covers all processes of work preparation from the idea to the creation of tools to the finished profile and forwards the data obtained to the PowerCom controls. Automation is another core area of process optimization that is gaining in importance. Weinig offers solutions for every requirement in this field. The Theme Day centered around high-performance PowerCom-controlled systems that are operated externally with no tools and

increase the productivity of a production line by an entire performance class. In construction timber production, Weinig has an ever-increasing portfolio. The Theme Day included presentations of solutions for four-sided planing with chamfer in a single pass, solutions for glulam beam carriers with hardwood coating as well as the latest developments in CLT production. Using gluing with preprofiling and depending on board thickness, up to 25 per cent wood savings can be achieved. Chief Sales Officer Stephan Weber believes Weinig is well positioned in the Product Unit Planing and Profiling. "A Weinig customer has the security of obtaining an entire portfolio from us and with absolute process reliability," he emphasized.

PROFILE

A device for the application of laser edges through compressed air It uses the very simple principle of compressed hot air to perform the melting of the functional layer obtaining excellent results. The cost of this technology is far lower than laser gluing systems, but the quality of the parts processed with Airforce Systems is even slightly better than what is achieved with other systems says the manufacturers. Also its resistance to water and humidity give it unbeatable advantages. The system can be installed on small to

large range machines, making the top quality standard of the welded edge now accessible to everyone. The STREAM MDS which is Biesse’s largest edgebander is an ideal answer to flexibility required by the medium/large scale shops has been fitted with the system along with both the ROXYL and AKRON also available as either glue or hot air applications. Airforce System won the “Visionary Award” for product innovation at the AWFS 2013 exhibition in Las Vegas, USA.

shops, there is virtually nothing that we cannot achieve,” said Frank Kottbus, plant manager of the production site in Vreden. The company takes a totally holistic approach to design, encompassing the use of elements such as light, sound design and digital media. It even integrates Feng Shui concepts into its retail solutions. The results are unique design concepts tailored for each client.

Dula has a store of its own Dula managing director, HeinzHerbert Dustmann, had always dreamed of opening his own retail space containing high-end brands whose units featured interior decoration from his own company. Ten years ago, this dream became reality when the ‘DUSTMANN’ brand department store opened for business. Situated in the south of Dortmund, it accommodates boutiques, a perfumery shop with accessories and home furnishings and even a BVB fan-shop. The advantage for Dula is simple; it has direct contact with customers and gains

immediate feedback for its design concepts. New ideas, materials, forms, colours and fragrances are put into practice in a ‘real-life’ situation and the instant feedback enables Dula to rapidly improve their designs and solutions.

25% time saving in production To produce exclusive bespoke products, the Dula plants depend on innovative and reliable equipment. A quick glance at the Vreden production facility confirms Dula’s brand values so clearly seen in its shop fitting: innovation, attention to detail and quality. On closer inspection it becomes obvious that these values are equally adhered to when it comes to investment in its woodworking equipment. Dula’s is a totally integrated approach with nearly all machines featuring the’ blue wave’ of the HOMAG Group. In the 19,000m Vreden facility which employs 150 staff, the focus is on customised serial production. The factory has several CNC-machines from HOMAG and WEEKE, a store ‘n saw combination from BARGSTEDT and

Sanding challenge finish sanding in just one pass The sanding process provided a real challenge. Dula not only wanted to save time in the production process, but it also needed to improve the surface quality finish. To achieve this, the decision was made to invest in a BÜTFERING ProfiLine SWT 755 widebelt sander. The machine, with a bespoke configuration for Dula, is equipped with five sanding heads, the magnetic pad system and special cleaning units for the sanding and transport belts. The head sequence combined with the head technology delivers two key benefits: firstly the efficient processing of

mineral materials with very fine sanding belt grit sizes and secondly, the processing of veneer surfaces, length and crosswise to the throughfeed direction. This set up allows a single pass where previously four passes would have been required to achieve a similar high quality finish. Amortisation in just a year As a rule of thumb, the average period for amortisation is three to four years; for Dula, however, the BÜTFERING machine was amortised after just one year. “We are very satisfied with the machine’s quality, performance and availability, and are happy to confirm that the decision to invest in a BÜTFERING sander was absolutely right for our business,” said Kottbus.

With transport via land, sea and air, orders which typically took four to six weeks to complete are now delivered much faster. The Dula Group is a fascinating company that delivers products which stretch both retail and manufacturing boundaries. In everything it does, the company upholds its promise of designing individual concepts with innovative ideas, at a quality level second to none. The HOMAG Group is immensely proud that its machinery plays a major role in helping Dula to consistently deliver on its promise.

TOOLING & MAINTENANCE New Vollmer QXD 250 Produces Made-to-Measure Diamond Tools Vollmer, the global specialist for grinding and eroding machines, received an excellent response to its new eroding machine, the QXD 250 at the recent EMO exhibition. Launched in May at the Ligna International Trade Fair for Forestry and the Wood Industries, the metal processing industry proved as excited about this new machine as the wood cutting sector. Thanks to the new Vpulse EDM generator technology, the QXD 250 can produce PCD tipped (polycrystalline diamond) tools up to 30% faster than has been possible up to now. With targeted eroding impulses, the Vpulse EDM can increase the surface fineness by a factor of two or more. This gives the QXD 250 more flexibility in terms of tool production, which allows Vollmer to offer tailored-made solutions to the different demands of the marketplace. “PCD tipped tools have a significantly higher service life than any comparable hard metal tools when it comes to working on highly abrasive materials,” says Dr. Stefan Brand, Managing Director of the Vollmer Group. “With our QXD 250, we are making the production of made-to-measure

The QXD – up to 30% faster and with improved surface finishes

diamond tools cheaper and faster when produced in large quantities while still maintaining the highest quality standards.” The Vollmer eroding machine QXD 250 makes it possible for tool manufacturers to process more than 30% more PCD cutters in the same amount of time as has been the case up to now. This milestone in production is made possible by the new generator technology Vpulse EDM, which sets the eroding beat at the heart of the QXD 250. Depending on the demands, the Vpulse EDM can increase the speed of the tool production or increase the surface fineness. The Vpulse EDM achieves these advances when processing PCD surfaces by using individually cycled eroding impulses. This corresponds to two-fold improvement and more in comparison to the eroding technology that is currently available from competitor machines. The QXD 250 gives greater flexibility and opens up a wide range of new possibilities for PCD tool manufacturers when processing PCD cutting tools, allowing manufacturers to react in a targeted way to the demands of their customers and markets. Apart from the newly developed eroding generator Vpulse EDM, the Vollmer universal machine also offers a simultaneous track interpolation in six

CNC controlled axes. As a result of the increased tool track distance and swivel range, PCD tools with diameters of 320mm and lengths of 250mm can be precisely processed. In one single clamping fixture, the QXD 250 measures, grinds, erodes and polishes diamond tools in just one combined process. The Vollmer automation technology allows 24-hour production without the need for an operator to be present, during which the loading and emptying of the workpiece reservoir can take place simultaneously by automatic operation. The integrated tool changer for up to six eroding, grinding or polishing discs makes the processing of different work piece variants possible. “The QXD 250 eroding machine makes it possible for our customers to completely process PCD tools. Diamond tools such as face milling, groove milling or slot milling cutters can be exactly sharpened and can now be tailor manufactured for an ever increasing number of industrial sectors,” concludes Dr. Stefan Brand.

TOOLING & MAINTENANCE

Vollmer UK Continues its Growth Grinding & Erosion specialist Vollmer UK has announced that its 2012 turnover was an exceptional 35% improvement upon what was previously a successful 2011. The increased turnover at Vollmer UK has seen the company employ three new members of staff and also undertake a complete office refurbishment project. Commenting upon the impressive growth figures, Vollmer UK's Managing Director, Mr Peter Allen comments: "Whilst sales of our TCT and HSS circular and band saw blade grinding machines have been performing well in the wood making industry; it's the remarkable increase in demand for PCD cutting tools in the metal cutting sector that has been the major contributor to our growth. As the number of machine shops machining difficult to cut titanium alloys and composite materials increases, the demand upon leading cutting tool manufacturers to provide the

specialised tooling increases. As the market leading supplier of erosion and polishing machines for processing PCD Tooling, more and more cutting tool manufacturers have turned to us for solutions." This uptake in high specification machine tools from Vollmer has seen sales for its QXD erosion machines quadruple over the last 12 months. As a company that has built its reputation upon its service and support solutions, Vollmer has employed two service engineers and an apprentice to support this growth. Furthermore, the company's Sandiacre headquarters is undergoing a complete refurbishment. The three month refurbishment project will increase the stock room size and consequently stock levels, create a larger boardroom, provide more workspace for the staff and also see the introduction of a dedicated mailing room. Discussing the office project, Mr Allen continues: "The opening up of our office space will increase

TOOLING & MAINTENANCE Tooling Manufacturer Develops new Products & Growth with Vollmer When Prima Tooling recognised the expontentially increasing demand for PCD tooling, the company invested heavily in Vollmer machine tools to support cutting tool production. However, the Essex based cutting tool manufacturer that opened its doors for business in 1979, first noted the demand for PCD tooling back in 1985. Like other cutting tool manufacturers, Prima was limited throughout the 1990’s by the available technology for processing tools and in 1997 it bought its first Vollmer erosion centre, a QM75P with a 50-tool magazine. Despite being state-of-the-art at the time, the machine only had the capacity for one tool shank diameter, still limiting the company’s capabilities yet improving productivity and profitability tenfold. The company continued much of its PCD erosion on a series of ageing Agie EDM machines – until 2006. At this point, the Brentwood based cutting tool specialist made a paradigm shift and acquired a new Vollmer QWD750H erosion centre with a 12 tool carousel for cutting the profiles of its PCD tools. The purchase immediately scrapped four Agie EDM machines – and the new machine proved more productive than the four machines it replaced. Unlike its manually loaded predeccesors, the QWD750H is a fully automatic erosion machine that enables Prima Tooling to load the 12 tool carousel, allow automatic

production to take place and then unload completed tooling. This acquisition enabled Prima Tooling to improve the accuracy of its tool profiles, reduce cycle times by 60% on each tool whilst increasing the available floor-space by replacing four machines and enabling staff to be allocated to alternate tasks as opposed to continually loading the ageing machine tools. Where Prima once had four operators running its previous EDM machines, the company now has two men running the QWD750H and the remaining five Agie machines. Furthermore, with the level of automation afforded by the QWD, Prima could run the machine lights out to improve capacity and profitability. Since the company’s inception, the original partners have now stepped aside and converted the partnership to a Limited Company, allowing the two new directors, Mr Mark Cattle and Paul Wiggins to take the reins. As Mr Cattle comments: “We manufacture new cutting tools and also operate as a service centre. On the QWD, our new and service tools are finished 60% faster and all in one operation compared to the Agie machines. Previously tools would require two or more set-ups with inferior surface finishes and accuracy to that of the high quality tools made on the Vollmer.” Not only has the QWD improved productivity, capacity and customer leadtimes, it has also benefitted the end user with the supply of cutting tools to a far

superior quality. With the benefits of the QWD apparent, Prima Tooling invested in a Vollmer QXD200 grinding and erosion centre in June 2011. The new QXD200 was the first of its type to be supplied in the UK with a 64 tool conveyor for high levels of automation, as Company Director Mr Paul Wiggins says: “The QXD immediately improved cycle times by 50% and with its extensive Vollmer programming software, we have been able to extend our product range and target new industry sectors. The Vollmer software has improved productivity through its automated functions that reduce the need for manual input. For example, the production of secondary angles on cutting tools is fully automatic without any need for manual adjustment or setting for left or right handed tools. This is also the case for the calibration and dressing of the grinding/erosion wheels. Furthermore, with innovative features such as the new EX LEVEL software, we are able to process carbide and PCD drills and can now diversify into the supply of drilling and milling products.” A long way from the Vollmer machines of the 1980’s, the QXD200 with 6 linear axis and capacity for six erosion or grinding wheels, has the flexibility to process tools from 0.4 to 260mm diameter. This allows 9 employee Prima to manufacture anything from PCD routers and end mills, profile cutters, grooving, slat-wall, edge-banding and profile spindle tooling through to PCD

saw blades, hoggers, hinge borers and drills for the wood and metal cutting sectors. The first QXD made such an impact at Prima, that within a matter of months, the company decided to invest in yet another machine. In May 2012, instead of returning to Vollmer UK’s headquarters after the MACH exhibition, the next QXD200 was delivered straight to Prima. In less than a year, the company had increased its business to such an extent that the first Vollmer QXD was at full capacity – running 24/7. The next machine was a natural progression for the market leading cutting tool company. Identical to the first machine, the second QXD200 had a 29 tool carousel as opposed to 64. Commenting on the arrival of the second machine, Mr Cattle continues: “The second QXD has sharpened up our through-flow of work considerably. We can now schedule simplistic PCD routers and end mills for programming throughout the week and we can do all our complex long duration tools over the weekends. For example, we manufacture and service PCD face mills

and hoggers that may be up to 250mm diameter. We can put up to 30 cutters of this type on the 64 carousel machine and it will run from Friday afternoon through to Monday morning unmanned. Whilst this lengthy process is in operation, we can run a batch of 29 less complex tools from a Friday night through to Saturday afternoon on the new QXD200. Once this batch is complete, we can check the machine over the weekend to unload and re-load tools and attend to our erosion & grinding wheels ready for the next batch to run from Saturday through to Monday. When the facility is manned through the week, we reverse the schedule and do long jobs on the 29 magazine QXD whilst the 64 tool carousel churns out less complex tools.” Concluding on the acquisition of the Vollmer QWD & QXD machine tools, Mr Wiggins says: “The Vollmer machines are a big investment and a potential risk to a business of our size. However, once the first machine comes in and starts paying dividends with regards to cost reductions through running less machines and staff whilst improving productivity and capacity

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

and reducing lead-times; we knew we were going in the right direction. Our productivity and turnover has more than doubled since the first QWD installation in 2006 and our profitability, quality and capability has certainly improved. We can safely say that we wouldn’t be in the position we are without the Vollmer machines. This is largely credit to the capabilities and automation that allows us to run the three Vollmer’s 24/7.” “The Vollmer machines are allowing us to look into new market sectors and we are continually investing in things like CAM software for producing our own cutter bodies, the Vollmer drilling software, potentially a new machining centre and in the near future probably another Vollmer machine tool…”

TOOLING & MAINTENANCE Leitz Razor-Cut saw blades slash production costs on beam saws at Grant Westfield With over 100 years in interior building design and an enviable history in the field of manufacturing for building interiors, Grant Westfield has a wealth of experience in the design of all aspects of their field. The ability to design and manufacture using specialist tools and processes means that they can meet the most stringent architectural requirements. Their multiPANEL product line produces 4,000 – 5,000 domestic shower panels per week in 9mm plywood, laminated both sides and PVA glue bonded. MultiPANEL is the leading product of its type in the UK. Cutting five stacked boards at a time, Grant Westfield’s previous saw blades needed to be changed every 300 to 400 boards, but a trial with Leitz Tooling, the UK’s leading supplier of tooling to British industry, had saw blades lasting up to a recorded 1,358 boards before a change was needed. Grant Westfield machine shop foreman Grant Finlay said, “About a year ago we took three sets of Leitz Razor-Cut saw blades on trial. They were talking numbers and performance which we didn’t think possible, so we gave it a try. Previously our old blades lasted between 300 and 400 boards which means we were changing blades two or three times each shift. With

Leitz Razor-Cut sawblades are designed for noise reduced sizing to finish cut quality

Leitz’s Razor-Cut saw blades, one blade will last for two shifts; the saving in down time alone is impressive.” Mr. Finlay continued, “It’s a no brainer, the new blades are far superior. Leitz saw blades might cost more but the savings far outweigh the price. We were spending much more on ‘cheaper’ saw blades before we made the switch. The difference between the old saw blades and Leitz is like night and day. We’re now on a further four

sets and have not looked back.” Brian Maddox, Leitz Tooling sales manager said, “We know our Razor-Cut saw blades outperform the competition every time, but tooling can easily slip down the list of manufacturers’ priorities. A trial with our saw blades can make such a difference in down time and setting time, duration and quality, and we want more manufacturers to talk to us about what Leitz can do to transform their production lines. The time and cost saving potential in downtime is huge, particularly when combined with our expert sharpening services.” Leitz Razor-Cut saw blades are designed for noise reduced sizing to finish cut quality. Special cutting geometry ensures perfect cut faces and tear-free cutting edges in timber products coated with foil or plastics and the tool body has vibrationdamping laser ornaments and irregular pitched teeth for noise reduction and smooth running.

FINSA COMPACMEL: better than compact laminate FINSA says that their mission is to produce solutions in wood and arguably their high-tech COMPACMEL products is one of their best examples. All FINSA developments are aimed at providing products that offer users both additional application scope and excellent performance along with additional value. COMPACMEL is an extremely cost effective alternative to solid laminate used in so many public usage and contract situations. It is technically very high grade high density fibreboard (HDF) bonded with moisture resistant synthetic resins. FINSA UK Managing Director Rafael Willisch explains: “At the top end of the application scale for solid grade laminate, probably around 30%, there is no alternative (like specification that calls for specific chemical resistance), but for the remaining approximately 70% COMPACMEL is a fully viable alternative in all respects at between 35% and 40% less cost. This translates into significant savings on any project and will often be the crucial difference in winning a tender.” COMPACMEL presents excellent performance characteristics: It has a high density (more than 1000kg/m) as well as tensile strength, bending strength, elasticity and high impact resistance. It is well suited to environments of persistent high humidity. Therefore COMPACMEL covers a great variety of existing and future applications – educational furniture, public area toilet cubicles, locker room furniture, hospital and laboratory furniture, hotel and leisure area furniture and panelling, wall cladding and work surfaces…to name some. COMPACMEL comes in thicknesses of between 8 – 19 mm and a variety of colour tones and patterns. COMPACMEL can also be covered with different surfacing and edging materials. It machines as easily as other wood-based composites and has another advantage in that it is not nearly as abrasive as solid grade laminate so extends the tool life on fabricating machines. In the UK FINSA distribute all their board products nationally from their main base at Birkenhead on Merseyside and through

selected appointed distributors. A full range of technical literature and specification information is available from FINSA. For further information: Tel: 0151 651 2400 Email: uk@finsa.com

PROFILE David Clouting Reinvents the Wheel Whilst woodgrain has become the most popular effect in many areas, this has also seen it become a commodity product with the danger of suppliers being forced into competing on price alone. By concentrating on delivering the highest quality products at highly competitive prices, David Clouting Ltd allows its customers to match the needs of the fashion-conscious interiors market while continuing to make profits and reinvest for the future. The company’s Rijeke Oak G3606-Z5 is the perfect example of this. The design was introduced as an MFC/MDF by Kronospan last year, with the David Clouting version providing an exact match in PVC. Rijeke Oak blends both print and texture to represent a light, straight-grained linear oak. The end result is a highly commercial effect with a fresh tone, creating a timeless and classic design, destined to become the next generation’s leading straight-grained oak. The use of the new Z5 embossing texture, created through considerable investment by LG Hausys, enhances both natural appearance and tactile effect. Versions of both horizontal and vertical texture are available to match

all requirements. Yet another example is provided by Sand Lyon Ash which, through its simplicity of design, provides a natural look that will sit comfortably in virtually all room settings. This high quality product combines subtle warmth and soft light colouring, resulting in a superb colour combination that will easily blend with a wide selection of interior designs. Sterling OSB enjoys supporting role in Margate’s amazing sliding house When Thanet District Council gave artist, Alex Chinneck, permission to use an empty property in Margate, Kent to create a major new public artwork – “From the knees of my nose to the belly of toes” - little did they know quite how famous the project would become. Not only has the national media loved the work, key products have been highlighted as integral to the build; and none more than the ever-flexible Sterling OSB from Norbord. Norbord enjoys a close relationship with Alex and uses the company’s panel products in his work which typically combines art and architecture in different physically amazing projects. In Margate,

he peeled the façade of a four-storey house away from the rest of the building. As the curving bricks, windows and doors slide into the front garden of the property, which has been vacant for eleven years, its upper floor is revealed to the public below. Alex chose the house from a number of properties owned by the council for its character and location. In the short-term, the artwork will attract people to rediscover this historic suburb of Margate (the UK's original seaside resort) with its growing creative buzz. Sterling OSB, the UK’s leading OSB brand, was used as the main panel product for walls, floors and hoarding in the unique building.

BOARDS & PANELS Lawcris Succeed with Superpan STAR Since being appointed by FINSA as their preferred supplier of the groundbreaking lightweight Superpan STAR veneer board Lawcris Panel Products have experienced a tremendous reception and positive reaction from customers. Paul Holstead, Commercial Manager of Lawcris says: “Superpan STAR has given our veneered product portfolio a new dimension. The reduction in weight, superior face veneer, excellent machining performance and competitive pricing means that this product appeals to a wide range of customers.” Superpan STAR, has been created by using FINSA’s existing patented Superpan board technology and BASF’s Kaurit Light system. The result is a board product as strong and high performing as existing Superpan but up to 30% lighter. Superpan is produced in a continuous process by creating a chipboard core with surfaces of MDF-like fibres which gives the board higher resistance to bending over conventional chipboard. The Kaurit Light polymer is introduced into the core at this stage using a process called ‘foamation’. It also means that Superpan can be machined in all respects with conventional methods and offers excellent screw holding

properties. The MDF-like faces mean that the board yields superb results when accepting a surface laminate or decorative coating. Paul Holstead adds: “Superpan STAR has multi appeal to our customers. Some like the weight reduction, others like the superior face veneer, and they all like the machining performance.” Leeds based Lawcris Panel Products employs more than 130 staff. Their fleet of distribution and delivery vehicles is approach 40. Paul Holstead adds: “Due to the successful launch, we have recently placed orders to increase our stock range from the

start of 2014. I have no doubt that our range will increase even further during next year.” Superpan STAR was launched in the UK at the W12 Working with Design exhibition where it received an award in the Design in Manufacturing Awards (DIMA). FINSA says that the introduction of Superpan STAR has had positive ramifications across a whole range of applications and industry sectors.

Handi Andi at Parker Knoll Those who remember the glory days of furniture manufacturing in High Wycombe will be no stranger to the names of E. Gomme Ltd. and Parker Knoll. The traditional upholstery of the latter goes back 150 years and the contemporary brand of Gommes has flown under the G-Plan banner since the ‘50s. Both are world-beaters, setting standards for style and design that meet the up market needs of all those who have ridden the post-war ‘boom’ to relax on after a busy day at the office. The manufacturing interests of both companies left the High Wycombe district some years ago, G-Plan for Melksham in Wiltshire and Parker Knoll for Riddings in the Derby Dales. RW Machines Ltd is a supplier to both businesses. CNC links with G-Plan began in 2010 when RW installed two big routers by Anderson at the Melksham factory, where precision standards were paramount for G-Plan in the optimisation of increasingly expensive raw materials as well as in underscoring the quality promise of the brand. Through experiences at G-Plan, R.W. Machines’ CNC man Brian Thomson was able to bring Parker Knoll’s production man Kieron Greatorex fully up to date on the poor finishing consequences of cutting sofa frame components on a bandsaw. “I

routers at G-Plan easily made the key point for nesting: it doesn’t matter whether the upholstery style is contemporary or traditional, the bits in the middle need to fit together properly,” he adds. The sitting experience has been a focal point for Parker Knoll since founding father Frederick Parker established the business back in the mid 19th century. Today the team at Parker Knoll continues to work to the same core principles when introducing new designs to meet the needs of today’s consumer. Parker Knoll still leads the market for design, technology, fabric and materials in the production of beautifully crafted furniture for unparalleled comfort and timeless design. A new Anderson Exxact Industrial model 1626 PT has also now been installed at the factory of Parker knoll in support of the nesting ethos and cutting LDF (that’s light instead of medium density) panels 2 x deep for sofa frames

They operate without need for manual adjustment - and that's regardless of whether the machine is routing to a single panel depth, or through multiple panels to its maximum depth.

150 Years of Wood Processing Machines from Raimann For 150 years, wood processing machines have carried the Raimann name. What started as the pet project of a gifted inventor is now a company of the international Weinig Group with customers all around the globe. As part of the jubilee celebrations, Raimann presented its current range. Some 200 guests attended a jubilee event at Raimann that seamlessly combined the eventful history of the company with a performance demonstration of the modern supplier of rip optimizing machines and systems. Master mechanic Berthold Raimann commenced production of machines and repairs of all kinds in 1863. Specialising in wood processing machines would subsequently lead to rapid growth. Following the opening of a trading branch in Sao Paulo in 1925, Raimann expanded its international presence and Raimann products soon enjoyed a global reputation for high quality. New developments in the machine sector would later draw in additional customers from the furniture industry. However, the rapid expansion was halted by a sudden crash in the 1970s, as market conditions took a decisive turn for the worse. From the embers of the old company, two longstanding employees of B. Raimann GmbH, Rolf Heisterkamp and HansHeinrich Rottenberger, formed Interholz Raimann GmbH in 1977. After three years of trading, the successful company moved to a new production facility in FreiburgHochdorf, which remains its head office to this day. Additional milestones include the acquisition of the product range of Jrion Holzbearbeitungsmaschinen GmbH of Lörrach in 1998 and the creation of a sales office in the USA. Raimann circular saws would take the North American market by storm. At the beginning of 2001, Interholz Raimann GmbH joined the international Weinig Group in Tauberbischhofsheim, adopting the name "Raimann Holzoptimierung". Today, the company led by Michael Holtmann and Rüdiger Ruh employs some 80 personnel and trains its

own young talent via apprenticeships in all areas of the business. Raimann wood processing machines are in use in all areas of application of solid wood pre-cutting. Combined with state-ofthe-art Weinig scanner technology, Raimann rip saws offer increasing efficiency when it comes to cutting optimisation. The machines make a decisive contribution towards making the production of wood processing companies more profitable and make optimal use of the valuable, CO2-neutral raw material that is wood. 150 years on from its first incarnations, Raimann wood processing technology is more modern than ever. As part of its jubilee celebrations, the Weinig subsidiary presented its state-of-the-art pre-cutting solutions at its Freiburg factory. Besides the proven multi-blade and longitudinal circular saws, crosscut systems and scanners from the Weinig Group were also on display, arranged in individually assembled systems together with separating

technology to form highly efficient units. Raimann also presented a brand new development in EnergyPlus. The central dust extraction system specially developed for Raimann multi-blade circular saws comprises a highly efficient extraction and filter unit as well as a briquette press. The inevitable sawdust, which previously had to be disposed of at significant expense, is processed into briquettes and can thus either act as energy storage or can simply be sold. EnergyPlus is quick and easy to install, is energy-saving and, with its additional value creation, has a very short payback period.

WHAT’S NEW William Hughes adds Strength and Versatility to its Wire Components with new Overmoulding Capability William Hughes, the specialist manufacturer of springs and wire components, continues to find new ways to meet its customer’s requirements for precision wire assemblies with the introduction of an overmoulding capability for wire parts. The new process dispenses with the need for metal retaining clips in assemblies such as car seats – providing an assembly that is both strong and fast to manufacture. The new process can be applied to a wide range of wire assemblies and requires the wire parts to be manufactured to a high accuracy. The components are brought together using special tooling designed by William Hughes and two vertical injection moulding machines perform the moulding process to complete the assembly. The overmoulding process allows for variations in the finished assembly – for example, in car seat assemblies retaining bars for the seat cloth can be included or where heated seats are required, connectors

and cabling can be incorporated so that heating elements can be simply plugged into the encapsulated boots. “Our expertise is in the design and manufacture of a wide range of bent wire components to high accuracy and this is critical for the manufacture of overmoulded assemblies, said Emma Burgon, Engineering Director, William Hughes. “This means that the overmoulding process can be applied to a wide range of assemblies across many industries, providing benefits to our customers in terms of strength, versatility and speed of manufacture.” Any 2D or 3D wire form that involves twists, turns, spirals, protrusions, indentations – or just plain bends – can be accommodated and the William Hughes team of application engineers can help customers solve their engineering problems by offering a rapid design and prototyping service. This is particularly suited to the high volume sectors such as automotive. William Hughes has over 200 years’ experience in producing bent wire

INSTALLATION Striebig Saw Stars at London Sign Company Newman Displays, a leading sign and display company specialising in the theatre and cinema sector, is benefitting from cleaner cuts, less wastage and a reduction in dust after switching to a Striebig Standard vertical panel saw The London-based company, whose large creations can be seen outside theatres and cinemas in the West End, in other UK cities and internationally, makes and installs all types of signage. They could contain vinyl graphics, silk screen printing, neon, illuminated and non-illuminated signs or acrylic fabrications. Its Standard TRK1 4216 saw sizes a variety of sheet material including hardboard, Foamex, Perspex, aluminium board as well as some MDF. Printed vinyl is then mounted on to the sheets. With a cutting range of 3.3m x 2.1m and a maximum depth of cut of 80mm, it is one of nine models in the Standard TRK1 series. The Striebig replaced a 13-year-old saw that was coming to the end of its working life. Mechanics had to be called out almost every month to fix it, and as panel cutting is the first stage in the production process this was causing serious bottlenecks in the workshop. During an initial Google search to seek a replacement, production manager Gary Brooks was impressed with the specifications of the Swiss-built saws. He also received a favourable report from one of

his plastic sheet suppliers, a Striebig user. Mr Brooks then met a representative of the saw maker’s UK sales agent, T.M. Machinery, at a B&Q store to see a Striebig in action. “The cleanness of the cut is its biggest advantage,” he said. “We never cut that clean before, even on hardboard. It gives us a smooth cut every time, making it a quick and easy job to polish the edge. We often ended up before with ragged edges on some of the materials that took time to smooth out.” Material wastage has been reduced. This is because the bought-in boards measure 3m x 2m, but as they could only get a 3m x 1.9m sheet on their former saw the suppliers had to cut a strip off each one so it would fit. The Standard TRK comes with a strip cutter fitted as standard that’s ideal for making fast and accurate repeat cuts. Newman Displays finds it very useful for the small pieces that often needed to be sized, such as those featuring stars’ names. The company is also impressed with the Standard’s highly efficient integral extraction system, which delivers dust limit values considerably below 1mg/m3. Tried and tested over decades, the Standard is considered the workhorse of the vertical panel saw sector. Its flexibility and extensive options make it the ideal panel saw

for company of all sizes. “We were happy to go with the Standard as we wanted a basic saw that would give us accurate and smooth cuts,” said Mr Brooks. “T.M. has given us great service, delivering the machine on time as promised and providing thorough on-site training. We are so impressed that they have been asked to service all of our machines in future.”

BB Trade Kitchens and Bedrooms is, in the main, a manufacturer of kitchen and bedroom carcasses, buying in their doors from a number of suppliers, primarily from Browns 2000 in Cramlington just a few miles down the road, and they have a large showroom for potential customers to view their extensive range of products. In 2012, as sales were increasing, BB Trade Kitchens and Bedrooms needed to increase production by purchasing a second CNC machining centre for carcass production. Brian Burke comments "We already had an SCM Pratix 48NST CNC, but to machine boards using the Nesting process, we had to cut 300mm each time

Morbidelli Universal 3622 CNC machining centre installed at BB Trade Kitchens

off a full size sheet of MFC, a costly additional operation and a waste of material. A CNC was available with immediate delivery, so we ordered it through a dealer and it was delivered to our

factory extension." "However, this machine was a disaster and despite many promises it hardly ever worked on production over a 2 month period at a very busy time for our business. We also had major problems linking it to our existing Cabinet Vision CAD CAM system. After numerous visits from engineers and senior staff, we finally asked the dealer to remove the machine and give us our money back. Still desperately needing another machine, we contacted SCM Group's Area Manager, Ian McCarthy, who visited us without delay to discuss our exact requirements." As BB Trade Kitchens and Bedrooms required a machine to nest panels from a 2800 x 2070mm Jumbo sheet of MFC, Ian McCarthy proposed a Morbidelli Universal 3622 CNC Machining Centre Cell complete with infeed and outfeed handling equipment. As it happened, a machine that suited the customer's requirements was in SCM Group's Morbidelli showroom in Rimini, Italy. An order was immediately placed and collection and delivery arranged with installation and commissioning

without delay. The Morbidelli Cell is essentially a one man operation. After a full load of boards is fork lifted on to the infeed loading platform, side aligners accurately position the panels, then 3 large diameter suction cups located on the rear of the main machine's gantry, grabs the top panel on to the slave board on the Universal 3621's solid aluminium multifunctional work table. Two - 250mc/h vacuum pumps ensures the MFC panel is securely fixed to the machine table. Tools are taken by the powerful 12HP routing head with variable 1500 - 24,000rpm spindle speeds from the rear 10-station tool changer. Nesting of the component panels takes place swiftly and at the end of the routing cycle, the F26 Drilling Unit (18 vertical and 8 horizontal spindles) drills all the required assembly holes. The nested component panels and rails are then automatically pushed off the

Universal's table by a pusher bar on the gantry and on to the outfeed table. The machine then processes the next full-size sheet from the infeed panel stack, as the operator manually removes and stacks the components from the outfeed table, with enough time to insert the Hafele assembly fittings into the vertically drilled holes. Panels are then taken to an SCM S1000 Single-Sided Edge Bander for edging where necessary with 0.4, 1 or 2mm PVC or Melamine tape. The Universal 3622 has an automatic panel thickness measuring device providing absolute precision when routing with the automatic measuring of the effective thickness of the panels being processed and the length of the tools. Factory Manager, Ian Findley, comments "We are very impressed with the new Morbidelli Universal 3622 Cell from SCM and with the SCM Group's installation

process. Programming with Cabinet Vision in the office enables the operator to call down programs to the CNC by hard line. If we do have a problem, SCM engineers are on hand in the office to provide immediate solutions. We also have our 6 year old Pratix for any remedial work or for drilling panels to avoid disrupting production on the Morbidelli Cell. After our previous bad experience we are now satisfied we made the correct machine purchase from SCM."

CNC MACHINING CENTRES

Weeke’s BHX Range CNC Drilling Centres – Simply The Best On October 1, 1945 Gustav WEEKE & Sohn founded a locksmith’s shop in Herzebrock in Westphalia, which focused on the demands of woodworking factories. The company developed the first lock insertion machine SEM-I, which carried out all working processes in only 5 seconds. This ‘revolutionary technology’ was followed by a machine which allowed multi-spindle drilling into work panels; this superseded the costly tongue and groove connecting method which had been used previously. From those early days, the throughfeeddrilling machine, as it was called from that time on, has developed into the high-tech WEEKE machinery of today. In 1986, WEEKE which had been family-owned up to then, was integrated into the HOMAG Group. Since then, the company has been tasked with the strategic responsibility of developing the specialist fields of drilling, routing and assembly technology.

WEEKE’s Ground-breaking BHX 050 and 055 Ultra-compact Drilling Centres Launched at Ligna in 2009, the WEEKE BHX 050 Optimat is an ultra-compact throughfeed drilling centre with an equally trim price tag from the HOMAG Group. It is the ideal drilling solution for all businesses whether small, medium or large. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of HOMAG UK comments, “Sales of the BHX 050 have been amazing. This year will probably see the

on five sides and is capable of grooving and routing at fast throughput rates whilst, at the same time, keeping energy bills down due to its low energy usage.”

Highly Flexible

2000th machine leaving the factory. Clearly, it’s proved to be a real winner and is an ideal CNC machining centre whether for kitchen, bedroom or office furniture producers. “The unique advantage to the BHX 050 is that it is packed with all the features of a conventional CNC but, in taking up less than 5m2, it’s small enough to fit comfortably in any production facility. What’s more, the icing on the cake is the price tag which is easily within reach of most manufacturers. “This reliable 3-axis processing centre is equipped for all drilling needs. It can drill

The versatile BHX 050 is capable of processing panels as small as 200 x 70 x 12mm up to panels as big as 2500 x 850 x 60mm. There is also an option to increase this working length to 3050mm. Simon continues, “The BHX 050 can process any type of wood panel and is most commonly used for chipboard or MDF. We have had situations, however, where even demanding materials such as Trespa are being handled by this robust machine.”

A Real Time-Saver that Offers True Value “With smaller machines it’s generally expected that processing time will be extended,” Simon continues, “the WEEKE BHX 050, however, can match the rapid processing times of much larger machines. Customers that have seen the BHX 050 put through its paces, have been nothing but impressed by its capability. “Once the programming has been done, the set-up takes just seconds; it only requires the push of a pedal and press of a button to get it started. A really productive feature on the BHX 050 is the panel holding system. There are no vacuum pod or beam positions to worry about, the machine automatically positions the panel clamp correctly to suit each panel. All the operator has to do is load the parts – it’s simple and efficient. “Although it is classed as an entry level machine, no compromises have been made on build quality or safety. The BHX 050 has the features you’d expect from a WEEKE machine, all at a real value for money price.”

CNC MACHINING CENTRES WEEKE BHX – debuted at Ligna 2013

WEEKE BHX 055 – More Capacity, More Spindles The success of the BHX 050 prompted WEEKE to develop a higher specified version, the BHX 055. This powerhouse has all the benefits of the original 050 but includes automatic adjustment of work piece thickness, a maximum working length up to 3050mm and 13 vertical spindles as standard.

WEEKE’s BHX 200 – Debuted at Ligna 2013 WEEKE unveiled its BHX 200 CNC processing centre, the next generation of small footprint vertical CNC technology, at Ligna 2013. This compact power pack requires less than 10m installation space and selectable features include a powerful 9 kW HSK routing spindle with a 4-fold tool changer as well as a tiltable grooving saw. It is the big brother to the BHX 050/055 series and utilises the same vertical machining style. The BHX 200, however, boasts considerably faster machining speeds whilst maintaining high levels of precision, despite its small size. The machine is equipped with two individually moveable high-speed drilling heads which activate a total of 34 highspeed drilling spindles enabling, for example, rows of holes to be processed considerably faster. As standard, the BHX 200 is equipped with two CNC-controlled no-vacuum clamping devices to precisely position and

fix the work pieces during operation, so no setting times are required.

WEEKE BHX 500 Optimat series CNC Gantry-Processing Centres For years, the BHX 500 series has impressed UK customers with its speed and precision in work piece handling and processing. Equipped with two machining heads (routing, drilling and grooving) mounted above and below the air cushioned worktables, the BHX500 can drill two panels at once, providing extremely short cycle times. One-off panels pose no problem for the BHX 500 as there are no vacuum pod positions to worry about. The incredibly versatile BHX 500 is available as a left or right handed machine or alternatively as a throughfeed system. WEEKE offers a wide choice of automation to further enhance the capability of the machine. These include infeed and outfeed stations as well as fully integrated robotic systems which can feed and de-stack from the machine without the need for an operator. With a travel speed of up to 130m/min it delivers rapid execution of jobs. Regardless of the speed, however, the two CNCcontrolled clamping devices ensure permanently firm and precise positioning of the work pieces. Even work pieces of up to 80mm (2 x 40mm) thickness are easy to handle. The patented spindle clamping gives a

permanently exact drilling depth for all drilling operations and the SmoothPressure System© provides a protecting air cushion below the work piece which enables high-quality work piece handling.

Fast and Simple Controls with powerTouch The new powerTouch system unites design with functionality in a totally new user interface. Central to the new system is a large wide-screen multi-touch monitor which enables the operator to control the machine’s functions by simply touching the screen. The ultra-modern user interface offers an array of help and assistance functions designed to radically simplify the work experience. Standardised control elements and software modules ensure that all HOMAG Group machines can be operated with the same familiar look and feel using power powerTouch. This not only simplifies the operation of different machines, but also makes for greater efficiency by significantly reducing time for servicing and training.

Willow Joinery Install SCM 5-Axis CNC Machining Centre Willow Joinery are a small but expanding joinery and furniture manufacturer located in Daventry, Northants, specialising in the production of all types of joinery, including stairs, doors, windows and bespoke kitchen and bedroom furniture and studies. Owner, Mike Pateman, started Willow Joinery 11 years ago, and has 20 years experience in carpentry and joinery. Finding and keeping experienced staff has always been a problem, and although he already has a well equipped workshop with traditional woodworking machinery, after visiting several machinery exhibitions, Mike decided earlier this year to start looking at CNC Machining Centres, to increase production levels, quality and profit margins and improve on times producing components, especially complex ones. Having looked at several manufacturer's machines and after visiting another joinery manufacturer nearby who has an SCM 3axis CNC machine, Mike Pateman contacted SCM UK's Area Manager, Roger Gabb, who visited Willow Joinery with Rod

Tudhope and Graeme Hughes of local dealer Aztec Machinery. Mike Pateman comments "I knew I had to purchase a CNC to expand my business. As well as joinery products, I want to

manufacture more bespoke kitchens and bedrooms as I have already supplied furniture to various schools and businesses through architects who I have previously supplied with joinery, especially one-off stairs. I calculated a CNC would improve production times, increase profit margins and enable me to manufacture more elaborate parts for stairs, kitchens and bedrooms now increasingly demanded by customers." Mike Pateman was already well versed in CAD design to assist in producing drawings to accompany quotations, so a CNC and programming the machine held no fears, so much so, Mike decided to purchase a 5-axis machine rather than a conventional 3-axis one. Visiting SCM's showroom for a demonstration, Mike was keen to proceed, so purchased the demonstration machine on the spot, an SCM model Tech Z5-31. Rod Tudhope and an SCM engineer installed the CNC at the beginning of August this year. The Tech Z5 machine table has 6 movable bars and pods with a machining area of 3050 x 1550mm, but with SCM's

CNC MACHINING CENTRES unique cantilever structure, it allows the loading of components and panels along the 'Y' axis far wider than the working capacity of the table. The powerful 15HP 'Prisma 5' routing head can run up to 20,000rpm and is capable of heavy duty machining of all types of timber and panels by utilising cutters, saws, drills and aggregate heads for angled routing, sawing, grooving and drilling. The compact 5-axis routing head is capable of working in reduced spaces without the risk of collisions, and with this SCM patented solution, allows the keeping of the overall dimensions in each direction of travel to a minimum, resulting in operator convenience and maximum flexibility. A separate F18 drilling unit with 12 vertical and 6 horizontal spindles enables the drilling of all types of work. Tooling, including roughing and finishing cutters, cutters for nosing on stair components, saws and rebating and hogging heads are stored in either the Rapid 12 automatic tool changer, with 12 stations, or in the TR10 rack tool changer with 10 positions, to provide maximum flexibility. The table's vacuum pods have a powerful mechanical grip on the movable bars to enable heavy duty machining. SCM supplied Willow Joinery with their own 'Xilog Maestro' CAD/CAM software and programming package, which is very easy and simple to learn and use, with 3D graphic display and worktable set-up. Various options include modules such as

Machined component from the SCM TECH Z5

Maestro Cabinet for cabinet and furniture production and Maestro Nesting for panel components nested from a full-size sheet with reduced production times and tool paths. Mike Pateman states "I am already very impressed with the SCM Tech machine after only 5 weeks since installation. The first job I did was the machining of a heavy duty fire door, followed by a complex tray for the delivery of pistons. Then I made some bedroom doors with mortise and tenon joints. The vacuum to the pods is

powerful as I recently machined two 60mm wide wooden rails, side by side, on 120mm wide pods and they held firm throughout the machining process." Training was carried out by SCM and will continue on an on-going basis. Aztec's Rob Tudhope and Graeme Hughes are local and always on hand to assist Mike Pateman as and when necessary, plus SCM's own service division. Mike Pateman concludes "As I have only had the CNC running for a few weeks, I am already very pleased with my purchase, as when I press the start button, the machine does exactly what I've programmed it to do. All the components are "Spot-on", very accurate compared to traditional machining methods, so everything fits together first time without any remedial work necessary. This saves a lot of time, and time is money. The machine will soon pay for itself."

FINISHING

High Class Finish from Chilfen Dust Control Systems (DCS) recently partnered with Spray Finishing Systems specialist, Gallito Ltd, on a project to design, manufacture and install two custom-built spray booths and a drying room, for long standing customer Chilfen Joinery. Based in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, Chilfen employs around 70 people and operates from a modern 33,000 sq ft manufacturing facility. The company provides a bespoke joinery service to fit-out specialists, predominantly in the commercial and retail sectors. Commenting on the project, Michelle Dear, joint managing director of the family run concern, said: “Having reviewed our

operation over the last 18 months we identified the need to upgrade our spraying facility to enable us to satisfy increased demand for our sprayed products. We invited DCS to put forward their proposals for two replacement spray booths and a drying room. The drying room was seen as a very important addition in order to increase throughput without compromising the quality of our finished products.” DCS engineers, working closely with manufacturer Gallito, came up with a scheme which involved the fabrication of two new spray booths, providing a total spraying area of 540 sq ft, together with a 210 sq ft interconnecting drying room which enables finished product to remain

in an isolated, dust-free environment until completely dry. Mike Stephenson of Gallito explains: “Chilfen’s new spraying facility was designed specifically to suit their production requirements. It provides the necessary air flow to meet current legislation, and the control system ensures maximum life is achieved from the filter media and that emissions fully comply with current and future requirements. A balanced air extraction / input system, incorporating fan speed control and fan silencing, draws air into the drying enclosure and spray booths from high level in the factory where the air is warmest. This considerably aids the drying process and,

because Chilfen generate heat for the factory by burning wood waste, warm air is

a plentiful commodity. Also, unlike the old system, the new facility is capable of

running for over 12 hours at a time.” Michelle Dear adds: “We now have a spraying and drying facility to be proud of, enabling us to finish products more quickly, and to a consistently high standard. Installation of the new plant also presented us with the opportunity to relocate the spraying facility to better suit production flow in the workshop and, as is always the case with DCS, the installation team worked around us with little or no disruption to production.” The old spray booths were removed and the new system was fully commissioned in just 10 days.

WOODWASTE Exhibition Business Uses Wood Waste to Stand up to Astronomical Bills An exhibition contractor in the Midlands has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating bills. MD of Nu-Stand in Redditch, Simon Harris purchased the wood waste heater six months ago after hearing so many good things about the heaters and the company from a fellow business colleague who’d had a number of the heaters installed. At the time, Nu-Stand was paying astronomical bills of around £5,000 on heating and almost £14,000 on skip hire charges each year. Simon spoke to Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology, and visited the stand at the W12 Exhibition at the NEC before ordering a WT15 model. The heater was installed at the end of 2012, taking Wood Waste Technology’s experienced installation team less than half a day to set it up in the 8000 square feet factory – and everyone is delighted with it.
