Wood From The Trees The high price that energy companies are able to pay for UK trees may eventually mean it is uneconomic to make things with wood in this country. The factories that produce kitchens, windows, wardrobes, chipboard, building panels, toys and many other useful things may have to move abroad, to places where costs are lower. If we have to import these products, then the price will go up and jobs will be lost in

this country. Making useful things with wood creates one full time UK job every 9.4 tonnes used. Burning wood for energy uses up 840 tonnes to create one full-time job. For more information, see www.usewoodwisely.co.uk. For further information: Tel: 01786 812 225 www.norbord.co.uk

Norbord Technician Gets On His Bike To Raise More Than £1,300 For Charity Ian Lawrence from Norbord's South Molton plant is celebrating after cycling the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100. The Norbord technical manager spent months training hard to prepare for the event and raised more than £1,300 for Micro and Anophthalmic Children's Society (MACS). The charity offers support to both children and their families born without or undeveloped eyes. The 45 year-old has been a keen cyclist for more than 22 years and is delighted to have completed this most recent personal

challenge. Ian said: "Training and preparation went well before the race but on the day organisers were forced to remove two hills from the route due to safety concerns. Riding through closed roads in London was a great experience and it was lovely to see a number of iconic sites including Parliament Square, Piccadilly Circus, Harrods and The Shard on my way." PROFILE

30 Years of FIRA Gold An accreditation which signifies excellence in furniture products and installation is celebrating thirty years since its initial launch. FIRA Gold Certification was first launched in 1984 for kitchen units, following demand from manufacturers for a quality mark for furniture tested to industry standards. The scheme expanded to cover installation services in the early 90s, then office and bedroom furniture in 2002. Today, most major kitchen retailers and manufacturers hold FIRA Gold, as well as many independents. Most recently, Broadstock achieved Installation Certification for workplace, educational and catering furniture and Chaucer Furniture Logistics for contract furniture. FIRA Gold Certification is a quality mark awarded by FIRA International and backed by the Furniture Industry Research Association, experts in the furniture industry for 65 years. Current Gold Certification holders, Bushboard and Paula Rosa gained FIRA Gold for their kitchen ranges in 1989 and continue to hold the accolade twenty-five years later. Salice, a component supplier, and Magnet joined the scheme in 1990. Manhattan achieved FIRA Gold for kitchen and bathroom installation in 1990 and B&Q first gained Certification for fitting kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms in 1997. In the office furniture sector, Lee and Plumpton, a manufacturer, has held the accolade for nearly ten years for a range of desking and storage. Phil Reynolds, FIRA’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “First introduced in the 80’s, FIRA Gold is a way for businesses to provide independent evidence that their products and installation services meet the highest standards in the industry. To achieve FIRA Gold a product or service will undergo thorough testing and/or auditing to ensure excellence is maintained. As years have gone by we have moved with the industry to expand the remit of FIRA Gold to meet demand from consumers and organisations specifying furniture on tender documents. We are proud to be celebrating that as the recognised mark of quality for furniture, FIRA Gold has been able to provide reassurance to customers for thirty years.” To receive the FIRA Gold Installation

Certification a company must to go through a rigorous annual audit, ensuring all staff work to the highest standards and follow agreed industry practices. Product Certification is awarded following stringent assessment of the products to ensure they fulfil all relevant industry standards. The accreditation means that the production processes used have passed a rigorous series of tests to ensure that products are made to the highest standards

each and every time. FIRA Gold is the only accreditation scheme recognised by the furniture industry and audited by an independent third party.

Timber Expo Reports Record Visitors Numbers Organisers of Timber Expo today announced the 2014 exhibition was the most successful in the event's four year history - with over 6,000 visitors attending the show. Event Director, Loretta Sales said: "Timber Expo has grown year on year and this represents a 30% increase on the 2013 visitor numbers! There was a real buzz around the event which is now a truly international affair, with visitors travelling as far afield as Qatar, China, Ghana, Russia, Kuwait, India, Malaysia, Canada and New Zealand. Exhibitors came from over 30 countries to showcase innovations from across the globe." Loretta added: "This is not purely a numbers game however, and attracting the right sort of visitors is crucial, so we are delighted to report an increase in architects, engineers, specifiers and contractors - many with live projects." The Structural Timber Association (STA) had a high profile at the event and used Timber Expo as the launch platform for their new Structural Timber magazine. With an objective to engage and inform, the magazine features in-depth case studies, introductions to structural timber solutions and articles on, for example, ‘Closing the Performance Gap.' Another feature of the event hailed a great success was the Timber Buyers & Specifiers Forum and the feedback from attendees is testament to this: "It's a great event. A lot to get out at a personal level and the Buyers & Specifiers Forum is the best use of my time. It's very structured, well organised, with good refreshments and polite staff. I would highly recommend it." Atit Kumar, Architecture Business Owner, Tesco Stores Ltd. An excellent forum to explore ideas, innovations and an excellent event to promote a growing industry.' Elspeth Faulkner, Architect, BDP. "A very user friendly experience - the Buyers Forum helps to organise my time at the show, allowing me to get the most of out of my visit." Peter Clark, Construction Model & Specification Manager, ASDA. A very useful way to make quality leads with the organisations you want to meet. The

The Timber Buyers & Specifiers Forum was a great success

Buyers Forum avoids a lot of time wasting and is well worth the visit." David Kemp, Sustainability Manager for Social Housing, Procure Plus. On behalf of TRADA, organisers of the seminar programme, Rupert Scott said: "The Timber Focus seminars featured over 50 renowned speakers from across the built environment. The format went down well with visitors and all chairmen have reported lively and engaging Q & A sessions because of the great content that was delivered by people who knew their subject well." Judged by a panel of independent experts, media and industry partners - each year the Timber Expo Awards takes place at the event and this year's winners are: • Eco Curves by Jagram - Award for Best Pre-Show Marketing • Cellecta - Award for Best Shell Package Stand at Show • SIG RoofSpace - Best Custom Built Stand at the Show: The real test of an event's success is the rebookings and the organisers of Timber Expo have reported that nearly 60% of exhibitors signed contracts at the show for the 2015 event, when it will be taking place at the NEC

on 06 & 07 October. And finally a word from an exhibitor - Nick Milestone, Managing Director of B & K Structures, the UK partner of the X-LAM Alliance said: "The Timber Buyers and Specifiers Forum at Timber Expo provides an excellent opportunity to meet with both existing and future client audiences in an effective and efficient setting. It's a fast track route to relationship building for innovation and project involvement that would be difficult to achieve in more general networking settings. This year we have met with several Architects, Engineers and Developers and discussed projects in the pipeline, large developments and live projects that are awaiting design input - for us it is an absolute vital constituent of the Timber Expo offering and we would recommend participation, wherever you sit within the supply chain."

INSTALLATION Howarth Windows and Doors Install Two SCM CNC Machining Centres Long established and leading UK joinery manufacturer, Howarth Windows and Doors, has recently installed two SCM Accord CNC Machining Centres at their New Holland, North Lincolnshire factory following the floods in December 2013 that decimated their production facility. Howarth Windows and Doors produce sash, casement, shaped, arched, gothic, profiled and cambered head windows and all types of doors including entrance doors and frames and bi-fold doors as well as associated joinery products, all from European Redwood obtained from well managed sustainable sources. They also offer a supply and fix service if required. With the flood water one metre high and all the machinery on the factory floor badly damaged and production grinding to a halt, immediate action was necessary to restart production of Howarth's high performance windows and doors in order to keep their many customers happy. Having already installed an SCM Record

220 CNC several years previously and more recently an SCM Concept 2000 Double End Tenoner, Factory Manager, Mick Toner, decided to contact Ian McCarthy at SCM Group UK as well as other potential machinery suppliers to discuss Howarth's immediate machinery requirements, even before the insurance assessors had agreed the level of compensation Howarth would receive as time was of the essence. Mick Toner comments “Although the flood was a disaster for our production, it did enable us to contemplate our immediate and future production requirements and therefore the specifications of the machinery required and, of course, delivery times were very important.” Ian McCarthy and Mick Toner discussed in detail the CNC machine specifications and the next day quotations for 2 CNC’s were made with a fast delivery as the machines were in SCM’s Rimini showroom after being exhibited at the 2013 Ligna Exhibition. The Accord 40 FX, in particular, had a number of hi-tech features included,

some never seen in the UK. For example the “Mach 5” shuttle for rapid tool changing in masked time with a TRC 48 position rear tool magazine, the “MAXI-PRISMA T” 5axis routing head with chip conveying device, eight "Matic" Bars with suction pods or clamps, “Tecpad” mobile console, etc. It has a 5020 x 1680mm table size. The “MAXI-PRISMA T” 5-AXIS machining unit ensures quality and productivity at the very highest level. The SCM Group's patented solutions provides the unit with the rigidity of a vertical routing head, therefore allowing the carrying out of even the most heavy duty machining, and its compactness keeps to a minimum the overall dimensions in all directions. This results in a high quality finish to all machined components, maximum operator convenience and flexibility of use. The "MATIC TABLE” ensures set-up times in just a few seconds. A single positioning to obtain elements for the assembling of a complete window or door due to a dedicated motor in each

INSTALLATION pod/mobile surface and the configuration is performed in just a few seconds with guaranteed safety against the risk of collisions between the tools and the worktable. The suction cup / clamp changeover operation is quick and easy by pressing a pushbutton integrated on the base without having to use external tools. The tool magazine, positioned on the machining heads allow for tool changes in masked time. Positioned on the mobile gantry they house up to 48 large dimensioned tools which can be changed in just 5 seconds with the SCM “Mach 5” shuttle unit. The possibility of pendulum machining ensures that productivity is at the highest level. The operating cycle is never interrupted, whilst the machine operates on one side of the table, the finished work pieces are unloaded on the other side and the new ones loaded. Double-acting component lifting bars assist the operator loading heavy or large components. The second CNC, the Accord 20 FX has a 3680 x 1380mm table size and it also has a 5-axis routing head (PRISMA KT) with chip conveying device, an F14L Drilling Head, Rapid 16 rear tool changer plus a TR10 side / rack tool changer and “Tecpad” mobile console. It machines posts and scroll posts, arched windows, doors and frames etc. Programming of the Accord 40 FX and 20 FX is carried out at the machines PC while it is machining by operator Aaron Dixon using AlphaCam CadCam software, with training on SCM’s Xilog Maestro operating system carried out on site by

SCM Accord 20FX 40FX CNC machining centres at Howarth Windows & Doors

SCM Technicians as the machine was installed and commissioned. The programming system automatically informs the timber department the size and section of the timber required at the machine for processing. Howarth operates a SFO (Shop Floor Orientated) system so there is no CadCam office or R & D department in the factory, preferring to use the operators and personnel on the factory floor to run the production. Time is allowed every day for maintenance and an hour on a Friday for preventative maintenance and to solve any problems that can affect production on the machines. Howarth Windows and Doors supply many of the UK’s leading house builders

and developers, small builders, self-build individuals and companies that refurbish old buildings such as mills, churches, etc. As there is a diverse range of products and varying quantities taken by their customers, Howarth are successfully aiming towards “Just in time” production, therefore much reducing stock that costs money. Builders place an order for windows and / or doors, and subject to the weather, prefer to call off their orders on a short term basis, so a very short lead time is required and that is where the two new SCM Accord CNC’s have greatly assisted the production department. Mick Toner concludes “We have been very impressed with SCM and their salesman and their team of technicians, engineers and trainers as well as the two Accord CNC’s which are high quality products. The machines were installed and commissioned promptly as SCM knew the urgency required after the flood. Also, our SCM D.E.T. has been fully refurbished on site, with production continuing over a 3 month period. We provide an excellent service to our customers as we always want their next order and SCM have exactly the same philosophy.”

PROFILE

Innovation Continues to Fuel Growth at AXYZ International Leading supplier of CNC routing, engraving and cutting solutions under its AXYZ and Pacer power brands, AXYZ International has the capacity to accommodate virtually any application and budgetary consideration. Included in the most popular machine options is the 4000 series of routers and in particular the AXYZ 4008/4010 models that are said to represent a high-performance to lowcost option. Like all AXYZ routers, they are supplied with a host of both standard and optional performanceenhancing features, including a recently expanded (up to 33-station) automatic tool change (ATC) facility that provides both automatic and manual tool change options contingent upon the nature of the work being processed. The main contribution to continuing growth at AXYZ International has been a robust new product development programme that has included a raft of technically advanced machine upgrades. These include the new AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility that ensures the material being processed is always held securely throughout the routing/engraving/cutting cycle to enable optimum accuracy and a vastly superior finished product to be achieved. The facility also radically reduces material wastage and machine downtime caused by incorrectly set vacuum valves. The AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility supports other performance-enhancing features introduced by AXYZ International. These include the latest A2MC machine control and integrated AVS (AXYZ Vision System)

solution. The former greatly reduces or eliminates ‘bounce’ and vibration caused by sudden acceleration or deceleration often found with conventional control systems, while the latter ensures a more precise cutting action using all of the tools used on AXYZ routers as well as enabling a much wider range of materials to be processed. A further optional machine enhancement is the new helical rack and pinion drive system. This incorporates a multiple gear teeth configuration that ensures a more even distribution of the workload, resulting in significantly increased feed rates, greater accuracy of cut, quieter machine operation and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. Supporting all of these machine

enhancements is the recently expanded AXYZ International online 24-hour CNCRoutershop division. Due to wider sourcing of tools and accessories from both the UK and Continental Europe, this facility will now accommodate the requirements not only of AXYZ and Pacer routers but also virtually any other machine regardless of make or country of origin. Tools are available that will effectively cut harder materials such as solid woods and stainless steel as well as lighter materials like MDF, aluminium, plastics and their derivatives and vinyl, including specially coated engraving tools that impart a clean and clear surface finish on elaborately decorated or fine detailed design concepts.

W14 REVIEW Over 20% Growth at W14 Delights the Industry Last month the NEC doors closed on a very busy edition of the UK exhibition for Furniture and Joinery Manufacturers. Exhibitors reported excellent results across the product sectors – machinery, materials and components all saw packed stands and strong business levels. Event director Angela McGowan says that the true evidence of the massive success which is W14 was the number of visitors actually on stands and doing business. “The reviews from exhibitors are the best testament to what happened on the show floor and record results in terms of sales and enquiries were regularly reported from delighted exhibitors” she commented. “A glance at the post event trade press will tell you everything about the fabulous experience of attending W14” Angela concludes. It was immediately obvious that the exhibition has grown considerably since its 2012 outing. A 28% increase in exhibitors had led to over 20% more floor space with the show filling the three large NEC halls. The event is now one of the largest manufacturing exhibitions in the UK. Impressively, the machinery content of the event again expanded and the UK’s leading machinery suppliers were certainly in full force at the national showcase for technology. The organisers are especially delighted to see so many materials and components brands exhibiting for the first time in recent memory. “The objective of making the show into a complete shop

window for visiting UK manufacturers was achieved with W14” said Angela McGowan “Visitors tell us they were thrilled to see such a comprehensive show for the industry” Visitor numbers responded in kind with attendance at 9,667 (pre-audit). The 21% increase on the core W12 audience was further swelled by those Timber Expo visitors who took the opportunity to see both shows. It was pleasing to see many W14 exhibitors doing business with over 400 Timber Expo exhibitor and VIP professionals. John Smith-Bodden, MD of Huddlestone

which owns the W exhibition series, sees further growth for the 2016 show. “The work we, and our fantastic exhibitors, have put into the event since we acquired it during 2010 is now bearing fruit for the industry“ said John “It is important that W16 benefits from further investment and development to support a clear appetite for such a major event here in the UK”.

For further information: regarding W16: Tel: 01629 530998 Email: angela@huddlestone.co.uk

W14 – A Massive Success There were many contented exhibitors at this years W14 who were showing their products and services to a large number of visitors from the woodworking, furniture and joinery trades. Promoting TimberExpo, which ran for two days alongside W14, proved a worthwhile exercise. Although in separate halls they complimented each other boosting visitor numbers for both shows. With the addition of more fittings, laminate and adhesive exhibitors the show had a ‘one-stop shopping’ venue. Huddlestone Events Ltd did a great job marketing W14 with articles and advertising in the trade press throughout the year and, of course, on-line information. The industry needs this show and W16 will be upon us before we know it. Repeat bookings for stand space are looking positive and I feel sure they will be at a record high. W14 REVIEW Increase In W14 Visitors Leads to More Sales for T.M. W14 turned out to be a runaway success for T.M. Machinery, with both Striebig vertical panel saws and Viet artisan wide belt sanders proving popular with the large number of visitors to their biggestever stand. “There was a great deal of interest in the new Striebig 4D, being shown in the UK for the first time, which offers fully automatic panel optimisation,” said T.M’s sales director Matt Pearce. The show model had already been pre-sold to Lawcris Panel Products of Leeds with more sales expected following the show. “Optimism has certainly returned to the industry and people were prepared to spend money at W14, which was not the case two years ago,” said Matt Pearce. “In all we sold eight Striebig machines, including the Compact and Control models that were on the stand, with

customers particularly impressed with the extremely small footprint of the high specification Compact.” For the first time T.M, Machinery was showing the Italian-made Viet range of artisan wide belt sanders and Matt Pearce said they received a highly positive reaction from visitors. “Customers really appreciated the competitive price of the small S1 model, given its build quality and high specification. They were also highly impressed with the fine finish delivered by the new Opera 5 machine, which we demonstrated by sanding off ink from brochures without any damage to the paper. “All in all we had a great show. Visitor numbers were way up on W12, as was the quality of the enquiries we received, and we now have a great many strong leads to follow up.”

Viet product specialist Giuseppe Parma shows how the new Opera 5 wide belt sander can take the ink off a printed brochure.

W14 REVIEW

W14 Grows with HOMAG The W14 exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham was a massive success and, as the premier exhibitor, HOMAG UK enjoyed a fantastic show. “The buzz at this year’s show was clear for all to see and hear,” claims Simon Brooks, HOMAG UK’s sales and marketing director. He continues, “Our stand was inundated from the moment the doors opened on the Sunday until after the close of the show on Wednesday. “Interest was across the board from the small workshops looking to invest in our entry level machines to improve the productivity of their businesses, to large manufacturers wanting to introduce automated production lines to gain maximum efficiencies. After the tough market conditions of the last five years it was really encouraging to see such a positive outlook from the show visitors.”

Growing with HOMAG and raising money for charity To underline the HOMAG Group’s marketing theme for the year, ‘Grow with HOMAG’, HOMAG UK were running a promotion at the show to raise money for children’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent. Visitors to the stand could witness the versatility and speed of the WEEKE Vantage

100 throughfeed nesting machine as it produced one of five wooden height charts including a soldier, snake and penguin designs. A minimum donation of £5 secured a child’s height chart of choice for visitors. For adults, HOMAG was also making wine bottle holders which visitors could take away for a £3 minimum donation. By the end of the show the charity promotion had raised an incredible £1,540 which was generously doubled by HOMAG UK who were able to present a cheque for £3,080 to CLIC Sargent.

Quality at the touch of a button Simon Brooks again, “A real strength of the HOMAG Group is the quality and reliability that German engineering brings to the table and it is something we always highlight to potential customers. This show, however, is testament to the performance attributes of the entire Group’s machinery output. “We were the only exhibitor that had every machine on our stand, 17 in total, powered and producing. That we were able to achieve this within such a short build-up time for the show emphasises the fact that when our machines are delivered from Germany they are tested and ready to

operate straight ‘out of the box’.”

Entry level excellence The HOMAG Group has developed a range of cutting edge technology for the smaller workshops. Offered under the Practive banner, these machines provide precision and quality at practical prices. It means that almost any company can enjoy the undoubted benefits of partnering with the global market leader. As part of the package, HOMAG UK offers affordable financial packages from its specialist HOMAG Finance division. This valuable service enables companies to invest in machinery as and when they need it. The financial support is specifically developed for each individual company taking into account their own unique circumstances.

Growing with HOMAG – Enabling little acorns to grow into large oaks Entry level equipment on the HOMAG stand included models from edgebander specialist, BRANDT who demonstrated the Highflex 1230 and Ambition 1440 FC machines along with a new model of the successful KTD 720 edgebander designed specifically for curved parts. With its new digital control panel the KTD 720 can even

handle complete 360 degree work pieces. WEEKE had its immensely successful BHX 055 and BHX 200 compact drilling and routing vertical CNC centres on show. With their automatic tool changing facility these super compact models are truly versatile and practical, and the automatic panel return system fitted to the BHX 200 certainly stirred up a lot of interest. Purchased via HOMAG finance, the BHX 055 and BHX 200 machines cost just £4.48 and £8.73 per hour respectively. When it comes to wide belt sanders,

BÜTFERING leads the field and for entry level customers they were showing the efficient and cost effective SWT 114C and 225CC models. HOLZMA meanwhile demonstrated a machine from its most popular range of beam saws, the HPP 300. Featuring the new dustEx system ideal for sensitive boards, this saw can be purchased using HOMAG finance for as little as £6.62 per hour. This makes it not only a highly productive machine, but also a very competitively priced premium product.

Leading edge technology At the other end of the scale, there was plenty to see for the larger manufacturers. A machine in great demand was HOMAG’s BMG 512 CNC processing centre with BAZ technology for curved edging. With its 5-axis capability and BAZ technology, this is a truly versatile machine which is ideal for panel processing as well as window, door and stair manufacturing. On the high volume edgebanding side, BRANDT showed its Highflex 1650 FC and HOMAG its Ambition 2272 models; both

featured the airTec system to demonstrate zero joint technology. The Ambition 2272 was paired up with the Ligmatech ZHR 05 return system which if bought through HOMAG finance can be added for just £3.12 per hour. Shown for the first time in Birmingham was BÜTFFERING’s larger wide belt sander with cross belt, the SWT 325 QX. This powerful machine is ideal for sanding solid wood, veneer, sealer and filler coats on an industrial level. Visitors to the HOMAG stand were hugely impressed by its Venture 316 CNC processing machine. This full blown 5-axis machine offers considerable advantages over and above a standard aggregate CNC. Work that previously required moving to two or three other machines to be completed can now be done on the Venture 316 alone. Operators love the machine because it is so easy to use. They find HOMAG’s woodWOP 7 software with 3D graphics gives them a clear picture of what’s happening on the machine.

A quality finish time after time

HOMAG has enjoyed a strong partnership with CEFLA for over eight years now and the CEFLA Prima automated paint spray machine caught the eye of many of the stand’s visitors. Not only is this cost effective (just £6.01 per hour) automated spray booth simple to use, but it also guarantees a consistent quality finish on work pieces time after time. Compared with hand spraying, the CEFLA Prima delivers 50% savings on both paint and energy usage, and it can be run by an unskilled operator. As well as its famous return systems, LIGMATECH is a leader in carcass presses and at the show had its entry level MPH 410 press on show. With adjustable pressing pressure, two pressing speeds and a timer to set the required pressing time, it is a reliable clamp. What’s more, at just £1.97 per hour it is a cost effective workhorse.

overwhelmed by the amount of money that was raised for our chosen charity; it really was the icing on the cake for us. “Sales for the exhibition topped 35 machines at a value of over £2.25m and it was great to see that small and large manufacturers alike were highly impressed with the breadth and depth of our ranges of hardware and software. “We came away from the four day event feeling extremely positive about the future of the UK woodworking industry. There is no doubt that we will be building relationships with prospects we met at W14 and many will be visiting our Castle Donington showroom to purchase machines in the near future.” If you would like to arrange a demonstration of any of the HOMAG group equipment or software, please contact Adele Dixon at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

A Very Successful W14 for the SCM Group The SCM Group, the World and UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of Woodworking and Panel Processing machinery, took the opportunity to show their latest machinery innovations at the recent W14 Exhibition at the NEC, Birmingham. Covering an area of 624 square metres with 4 adjoining stands, new machines from the classical machine range, SCM's Premium Division, Industrial, Housing and Furniture Divisions were mostly running to demonstrate to the many W14 visitors to the SCM stands, the very latest developments that have recently taken place by the SCM Group within their manufacturing facilities in Italy. Gabriele De Col, SCM Group UK's Managing Director, commented on the last day "We have had an excellent Exhibition with many orders and enquiries from across the whole range of the SCM Group's

machinery, from top of the range CNC Machining Centres and large Stefani Edge Banders down to our wide range of SCM and Minimax Classical Woodworking machines. It certainly confirms that the UK economy is picking up and customers, old and new, are investing in the very latest technology that SCM can offer." The Accord 20FX CNC Machining Centre for the production of windows, doors, stairs, solid wood parts and for all those processes that require high level machining, while maintaining a high standard in terms of precision and finish quality, was continually demonstrating the machining of 4-piece pre-finished window components and the easy setting of the bars and pods on the worktable. Four machines were sold. A Stefani Single-Sided Edge Bander, the latest LASER machine, sold to Brown's 2000 of Cramlington, was demonstrated

and fully working as if on production, using materials and edge banding supplied by Browns 2000. As well as the Laser application, the machine also had the Stefani PUR 'Slimline' gluing system for dual edging, similar to a Stefani edge bander already on production at Browns 2000. Such was the quality of finish of the panels produced, the Stefani machine always had crowds of customers around the machine and the enquiry level was extremely high with additional sales assured. For drilling panels, a Cyflex F900 PRO BR was demonstrating the ease of setting up and machining of panels, for example, the production of carcasses for kitchens, bedrooms, offices, etc. Productive and versatile due to the worktable that does not require any adjustment between different panel configurations and the high capacity boring head, with 18 vertical and horizontal

W14 REVIEW spindles and the possibility of performing routing and grooving operations, ensures the Cyflex is becoming a very popular machine, confirmed by the sale of 5 machines. For planing and moulding, the latest SCM Profiset 60 Planer Moulder is designed to be very sturdy with 4, 5 or 6 spindles, with a Universal spindle available at the outfeed with 240mm capacity. The new feed system using Cardan joints and gearboxes is the technological heart of this machine providing higher productivity and a better finish to the machined timber. Features include pneumatic pressure on the 120mm diameter feed rollers and the inverter for continuous speed control guaranteeing a powerful, efficient and linear feeding of timber. Equipped with a pre-straightening system through the reference engraver placed on the inferior planer spindle, and with a 2000mm infeed table length. Several orders and enquiries were taken on this very popular machine with joinery and moulding companies. Exhibiting for the first time, one of SCM's latest edge banders, the K560 TER2, a compact and productive machine that has been designed to operate for long production periods per day with an 18 metres/min feed speed. number of different panels at the same time. Complete with infeed planing heads and corner rounding, many types of edging materials, including 2 / 3mm BS and laminate, were applied. Several machines were sold. From the Classical SCM range, an SI 5, one of the SCM Group's new range of L'Invincible sliding table panel saws, that can be customised to each customers exact requirements and include a number of programming and electronic features was on display. The sliding carriage provides a maximum quality of cut, guaranteed for 10

years from day of delivery. The carriage will never require adjustment and due to the structure with arch-ground steel slideways (an SCM exclusive and patented design), it can bear loads four times higher than other saws. The horizontal positioning of the guides ensures protection from dust therefore improving the sliding motion of the carriage. Other machines that were much demonstrated and received a considerable number of enquiries and orders were the Pratix S, Tech Z1 and Z5 CNC Machining Centres, Sandya 300 Wide Belt Sander, Morbidelli Uniflex HP CNC Drilling Machine and, of course, the SCM and Minimax Classical Woodworking Machines. Gabriele De Col concludes "After all the hard work by our sales and engineering staff before and during the W14 exhibition, all the effort certainly paid off and was confirmed by the number of customers on our stands requiring demonstrations, information and wanting to negotiate orders. Our office will be busy in the next few days sending the many orders to our Italian factories and our sales and distributing personnel contacting customers to close more deals for SCM Group machines."

W14 REVIEW Daltons Wadkin “Smarter” Revolution at W14 The W14 exhibition at the NEC Birmingham provided an opportunity for Daltons Wadkin to display their impressive array of high profile machinery brands within the UK marketplace. The company, now in its 113th year, have moved with the times and in order to reflect current demand across a wide range of industries their focus is now very much on providing specialist machinery to suit individual requirements whether they represent the traditional solid timber and joinery sector, furniture manufacturers, public authorities or industries as far reaching and diverse as motor manufacturing and aerospace. The many visitors to stand numbers 7D475/80 at W14 will have immediately noticed the change of emphasis when confronted with sophisticated equipment for the panel industry featuring Kimla and Greda CNC machining centres, Nimac beam saws, Altendorf sliding table panel saws and Elcon vertical panel cutting equipment, including incidentally the revolutionary fully automated and programmable Quadra. The company are following trends and demand from an increasingly wide range of customers and feel they now have a range of equipment to match or surpass anything

alternative manufacturers have to offer. In particular strong interest was expressed at W14 in the CNC machining centres and also (very possibly the first for this exhibition) the Kimla 5-axis ‘Streamcut’ water jet machine which is designed to cut a range of materials from steel through wood and plastics to even stone and is capable of unusually high cutting speeds being driven by a high pressure water and aggregate mix. The Kimla products were powered up and performing throughout the show and attracted many onlookers and potential customers. The Kimla BPF1731 CNC machine, incorporating gantry with three axes and matrix bed, was sold to London based timber importers and merchants T Brewer and Company and their director Keith Fryer was keen to see the

machine being put through its paces on the stand. Salvador crosscutting systems were also major exhibits on the Daltons Wadkin stand and featured a Superpush 200 system with auto rotation and ejection outfeed system, a Super Angle 600 and the smaller budget priced Classic 50. A Salvador technician flew over from the manufacturer’s base in Italy and was busy demonstrating throughout show. Many enquiries were received which it is hoped will bolster an increasing number of successes with this equipment throughout the UK and Ireland. Elcon vertical panel saws again featured strongly and the unique Limpio design, which is designed so that dust can be

extracted from both sides of the panel whilst cutting, attracted much interest. The major machine however was the Elcon Quadra which is a fully programmable and automatic vertical panel sizing machine with advanced clamping. This virtual ‘beam saw’ was demonstrated to great effect throughout the exhibition, again attracting much interest. A Stenner ST100R band resaw was sold to Gibraltar Joinery and Building Services, a Kuper XL6 planer moulder is on its way to old established Norwich timber merchants A & W Cushion and an Altendorf Elmo 4 fully programmable sliding table panel saw is destined for P M Products in Dudley, West Midlands. Other equipment on display included a CML multi rip saw with moving saws from Italian manufacturer CML, one of the Nimac fully programmable beam saws for which the company are sole UK distributors, a range of Maggi machines for edge banding and horizontal boring and examples from the Wadkin machine range for which the company are manufacturers and sole distributors. All this was presented under Daltons Wadkin’s new “machine smarter” slogan which was highlighted on large signs above the stands and which sum up the company’s involvement in an increasingly wide range of high quality and often CNC controlled equipment for a diverse range of industries. W14 REVIEW Blum Experience “Fantastic” W14 “Fantastic experience” are the words used by Blum W14 stand manager Andrew Hancox. The W14 show gave us the opportunity to engage with customers on a different level. Instead of displaying all product, the W14 stand concentrated on Blum’s ‘back-room’ devices for the assembly and manufacture of both traditional wood in-frame kitchens and the steel products primarily used with lay-on designs. “Perfecting Motion is a key concept for Blum and our customers” says Andy, “and our staff at W14 were able to demonstrate to stand visitors the benefits of using our specifically designed jigs, assembly devices and machines when working with Blum products.” Andrew estimates that around 50% of the visitors to the stand were using large, automated CNC machines for their drilling and marking, while the other half were making their own jigs and assembly devices in their workshops. The interactive displays of Blum manufactured tools, jigs and assembly machines came as somewhat of a revelation to them. In addition to the practical interaction Blum, for the first time at a trade show, gave visitors the opportunity to order any of the jigs, assembly devices and machines that were demonstrated during the four

days of the show. In conclusion Andrew Hancox stated, “The stand was constantly busy for the full four days, and I believe that every customer went away with a greater understanding of the wide-ranging support that surrounds the Blum product range and brand.”

W14 REVIEW

A Smooth Show for Kündig “W14 has been a busy show, with much interest shown and many enquiries taken, especially for the new brush system for kitchen doors,” said Carl O’Meara of Kündig Ltd after the show. “Edge sanders also proved very popular, particularly the Uniq and Uniq S, and we have plenty of work to do after the show. “There was a lot of interest in what Kündig has to offer throughout the exhibition. Numerous demonstrations took place, and our network of UK dealers was kept busy welcoming customers to the stand. Several previous customers also visited to say hello, and this was always very welcome,” he added. The sanding brush units, launched early in 2014, were the result of customer demand. “From several customers and distributors, we noticed increasing demand to find a finishing (wood and lacquer) solution for profiled panels, frames, doors, etc,” said Kündig’s Sales Export Manager, Juergen Schuster. “From a customer perspective, it was always the demand to find a ‘one-machine’ solution in order to keep the production lines short or to avoid having two separate production runs through two separate machines. With the new sanding brush units, we can offer either a hybrid machine

(brush & wide-belt in one machine) or single sanding brush sanders (without any wide-belt unit),” in addition to Kündig’s existing wide-belt range. For example, for customers manufacturing five piece doors, a suitable configuration may be a calibration unit followed by the sanding brushes: such a machine could presand before lacquering and de-nib after lacquering. The new brush units can be offered for solid wood and veneers, for painted or lacquered surfaces: if you make it, there is a Kündig model that can sand it. Kündig edge sanders are, according to the Swiss parent company, “the ultimate in edge sanding”, offering heavy cast iron working tables. The Uniq edge sander offers sanding for solid wood, veneered edges and shaped panels. Whether straight or bevelled, veneered or solid edges, the sanding belt unit is adjustable in height for complete use of the abrasive belts and comfortably covers all variants. It features two 1,180 x 325 mm work tables, one for solid wood and the other for veneers, with the optional bobbins with diameters of 25, 30, 40 and 45 x 100 mm for internal and external roundings. The working length is approximately 830 mm for solid sanding, and 900 mm for veneer

sanding. The floor space required is 1,150 mm x 800 mm, and the driving roller comes with the option of a mountable cast table with holes for the dust extraction. The Uniq-S, also popular at W14, is the next model up: it offers through-feed sanding of small or large workpieces, thanks to the integrated feed belt system, where pressure rollers hold the workpieces against the feed belt. Features of the Uniq-S include: adjustment for abrasive grits in the sanding pad device; two guide-pulleys with front structure for long workpieces; continuous graphite cloth-covered back wall sanding belt; and a sliding table extension, enabling easy handling of large workpieces. Options available on the Uniq-S include an extra table with mandrel and abrasive bobbins for external and internal shapes; a semi-round table for sanding curved pieces against the rubber covered driving roller. To learn more about any of these Kündig sanders, contact Carl O’Meara at Kündig Ltd.

W14 REVIEW DCS Group Celebrates W14 Success With the theme ‘Control the air you breathe’, DCS Group reports that W14 has been their best show for years, with all three of its group stands busy throughout.

Dust Control Systems Ltd As the exclusive UK distributor for German extraction equipment specialist Schuko, the DCS stand was the ideal platform to showcase Schuko’s latest technology. Taking pride of place was a 5 metre tall, full size model of a Schuko ECOVAR Validus Filter. This new generation modular filter features a fan cascade system whereby fans are brought on-line or taken off-line according to demand. Cleaning cycles are also tailored to specific needs by employing a new mobile compressed air regeneration system. The ECOVAR Validus benefits from a standardised construction system which means that the filter can be installed quickly, with reduced transport costs. Built using corrosion resistant galvanised external panels, units can be fitted with thermal insulation to save on energy usage and to provide soundproofing. “We are genuinely excited by the immense potential of the Validus

filter”, says DCS managing director Philip Oldfield. “These high-efficiency filters are supplied pre-assembled in sections, which means that on-site installation is much simpler, and they also negate many of the Health & Safety issues involved with erecting traditional filters.”

Ecogate Ltd Ecogate Ltd, the exclusive UK distributor for the ECOGATE® ‘extraction-ondemand’ system featured all the products and systems developed by California-based Ecogate Inc. Visitors to the Ecogate stand were able to see a practical demonstration of how the Ecogate energy-saving extraction optimisation system functions to drastically reduce electricity consumption for dust extraction. Chris Oldfield, who heads-up Ecogate Ltd, says: “We first launched Ecogate at W10 and it was an immediate success and, at W14, we continued to attract high end manufacturers. W14 REVIEW W14 Huge Success for Leitz Tooling Thermotech Window System and Unique Tooling Solutions for the Furniture Industries Leitz Tooling (UK) reports a full stand throughout the duration of the recent four-day long W14 exhibition. “It was a great experience,” said Leitz sales manager Brian Maddox. “We’ve had a huge range of conversations from most manufacturing sectors. Our stand gave visitors the chance to chat and find out how unique tooling solutions can improve productivity by improving performance, improving finish, and reducing sanding, set up and downtimes.” Leitz’s tooling was seen in action on the stands of many leading machinery around the show. Mr Maddox explained that many of the conversations had indicated that tooling customers are becoming very aware of the impact of buying ‘cheap’ tooling, without adequate back up, testing, traceability and support. “If something does go wrong, who will be responsible? Tooling has a vital effect on the specification of machines and customers are realising it is a huge advantage to speak with us first, when they are looking to invest”, he said. “It does not

cost to do so. It’s simple - the product needs to be machined by the tools, and in some cases the tools need to set the specification for the machine. Tool positions, weights, RPM capabilities and clamping arrangements for tooling can have an effect.” Leitz Tooling also saw strong interest in their ThermoTech Window System. Mr Maddox continued, “We also offer the BRFC licences and, through our cooperation with other leading companies, the contacts and resources for almost the full production requirements of an A rated timber window.” Leitz’s ThermoTech Window System is a complete, compliant and scalable system for the manufacture of high quality ‘A’ rated thermal windows achievable by both small and large manufacturers alike. Licences for 18 different variations of energy rated timber window manufacture can be obtained from the BFRC through Leitz by any company using the ThermoTech Window System stack tooling, and incentives are available on the first year of

W14 REVIEW A Successful Show for Maka A record number of W14 visitors converging on the Maka stand this year, gives an excellent indication that the industry’s recovery is well under way. The star of this year’s show was undoubtedly the [PE 90 CNC] 5-axis machining centre, with the speed and accuracy of the CNC controlled pods and rails creating a real stir. Demonstrations making stair strings and curved handrails, coupled with a demonstration of high speed pod positioning attracted a great deal of attention. A common question form visitors to the show has always been “ why is the machine not cutting” Maka UK engineer Nik Rayment’s simple answer “ A Maka machine is built to be used, to demonstrate the full capacity of the machine’s power and speed would see us getting through a considerable amount of raw material on a daily basis, You only need to compare the size and premium build quality with that of our competitors to know that this is not your average routing solution” The speed of the demonstrations took many by surprise. The live demonstrations which were seen running in “real cutting time” conveyed the exceptional speed, agility and rigidity that Maka has become synonymous with. One visitor commented that similar components at W14 were having to be machined with as many as two to three times more passes to remove the

Great Show for J&C O’Meara THERE was a constant stream of visitors to the J & C O’Meara stand during W14, Carl O’Meara reported after the show. “Undoubtedly the new edge-banding machine, the Genisis 512S, was the star of the show,” he commented. “We sold several at the show off the stand, only one of which was through a previous contact. “There was also very, very strong interest in the briquetting machines, with both those on the stand having been pre-sold. “The OMC press, which was also presold, has also stimulated a lot of interest: frequently people commented on its good quality and on how heavy duty it is.” The Genisis 412S and 512S edgebanders were added to the J & C range during mid2014 and were the result of a long search for a suitable model. Both models are considered ideal for tapes up to 2 mm in thickness and can end trim, flush trim and corner round, has scrapers, solvent cleaner and buffers. In addition, the 512S also benefits from pre milling, which allows easier planning of cutting lists by setting the pre mill to the same thickness of the tape being used, whilst offering all the benefits of removing scorer marks or any chipping that may occur when the panel has been handled or, of course, re-referencing the edge if the edge has been left overnight, absorbed moisture and become swollen. It also benefits from a colour touch screen along with pre heating of the edge, which assists in the bonding process, especially in the cold winter months.

There are 15 models of briquetter available in the Genisis range: the compact Nano range, and a range of traditional and vertical briquetting machines designed for a number of applications and having levels of productivity up to 210 kg/hour Traditional style briquetters, as illustrated, are a machine where the waste is gravity fed into the feed box via an agitator. These machines can be manually loaded or can be mounted directly beneath a dust extraction unit. The heavy duty vertical briquetting machines are designed to work directly beneath a dust extraction unit and are essentially the same as the traditional series but with the hydraulic closing cylinder mounted vertically to reduce the machine’s width hence changing the foot print of the machine. This series of machine also benefits from an auger feed screw to transfer the waste into the compression chamber. By using a sensor on the output of the machine, the auger automatically compensates the amount of waste being transferred into the compression chamber to ensure a consistent size of briquette and to automatically allow the machine to offer maximum productivity. The Nano series of briquetters are designed specifically for those who have a limited working space and are looking to convert a low volume of waste by either manually introducing the waste into the hopper or, as this is of a compact design, could be sited directly below a dust extraction unit. The 10 ft x 5 ft OMC press has 10 pressing rams, a pressing power of up to 160 tons and weighs about seven and a half tons. It is constructed using structural steel graded fe 430v and the frame is welded and worked with high precision machines to guarantee a long life. The presses can be equipped with different types of platens according to production needs, and with different types of heating, in order to guarantee the best working results. There are many useful features, including an integrated timer for pressing

times and weekly/daily automatic starting to allow pre heating prior to use. In addition, the hydraulic system has automatic hydraulic pressure recovery. An optional colour touchscreen is also available, using a state of the art control system to control temperature and pressing time, as well as calculate pressure settings for partial loading. Also on display and attracting attention was the Genisis P32 sliding table panel saw, with a 3,200 mm sliding table, 1,300 mm rip fence with fine adjustment and parallel over head safety guard.

Mirka Innovates to Help Customers Control Costs at W14 Focusing on continuous product development enabling customers to make efficiencies and control costs while delivering a high quality finish, Mirka UK is presenting a host of sanding and polishing innovations at W14 on its stand 6E619. For the first time at W14, Mirka is presenting its air sanding technology. The Mirka Pneumatic Random Orbital Sanders (PROS) are effective and durable tools for professional sanding. They are ergonomically designed and made from lightweight, hi-tech materials creating tools with optimal strength and user comfort. These machines are built for maximum dust extraction at low suction power and have a low noise level even when operating at their 12,000 rpm maximum. In addition, Mirka’s new abrasive film product, Microstar, designed for mattening and paint rectification of top- and clear coat applications, is on display in belt format. Microstar has a special stearate layer and a smooth film backing. Used for dry sanding only, this product has a high quality finish and lasts longer as it doesn’t clog as easily as traditional products. It produces a fine scratch pattern that is easy to polish out and is recommended to be used with a 5mm interface pad. The new high gloss solutions kit is being demonstrated on Mirka’s stand offering a quick, simple and cost-effective system that enables customers to high gloss a range of lacquered surfaces and solid surface materials. The kit offers two processes - a single compound polishing method involving more sanding; and a twocompound polishing process involving more polishing. Both procedures can achieve a 95 to 98 gloss following the simple pictorial chart included in the kit. The set contains everything required for ‘the complete solution’ from the patented Microstar film discs, polishing compounds, microfibre cloths, Abralon finishing discs,

mops and pads through to the correct backing pad for the polisher. Customers can also purchase a Mirka 180mm professional polisher in a case to accompany the kit at a reduced rate when purchased together. Also on show are Mirka’s Ultimax wide belts, which are manufactured using a groundbreaking new production process called ‘Selective Coating™ Technology’ (patent pending). This features a series of tiny cavities designed into the abrasive material which work efficiently to prevent clogging. This innovative technology, along

with special abrasive grains, produces aggressive performance and excellent edge wear resistance while keeping the sanding surface cool. Together these features ensure a longer lifespan and reduced material usage per job. The belts are available in grits P80-P180, P240-P320.

FINISHING Cefla PRIMA from HOMAG UK Brings Automation and Profit to N A Birch N A Birch is a family run business that specialises in providing high quality paint finishing services for shop fitters, joinery firms, door, kitchen and bedroom furniture manufacturers. With a 4,500 sq. ft. purpose built workshop in north Hertfordshire, the company works closely with its clients to colour match paint finishes and sheen levels to their specific requirements. “Delivering consistently high level finishes to our client base is critically important to our business,” explains Neil Birch. He continues, “We used to do all our spray work by hand which was not only very time consuming and labour intensive, but also meant it was extremely difficult to maintain the standard of consistency our clients demanded. “To address this we made a strategic decision to invest in automation and so began a search for a suitable piece of equipment that would meet our needs. Initially, we were considering the second hand market, but after much searching around it became clear there was nothing available that would work for us.”

A timely visit to W12 “Shortly after this we visited W12 at the NEC and saw the Cefla Prima machine in action on the HOMAG UK stand. We were extremely impressed by the performance of the machine and the consistency of finish that could be achieved. The real advantage we saw in this machine is that it allows us, as a smaller producer, to take advantage of automated spraying without the excessive costs that are normally associated with this level of equipment. The PRIMA has enabled us to step up from traditional hand spraying to a controlled and consistent process in a surprisingly affordable manner. “Being a new machine, the investment was more than we had budgeted for, but Simon Brooks of HOMAG UK was very accommodating at the exhibition and offered to help us with financing the purchase. He put us in touch with HOMAG’s finance man, David Henshaw who was absolutely amazing.

The Cefla Prima automated paint spray machine

He made it very easy and quickly put together a great deal for us which we were really happy with. It was a really slick service.”

Operational sea change “Prior to getting the Cefla Prima everything was hand finished except for the sanding. Now with the Cefla machine our output volume has increase five or six fold and more importantly, the consistency of the output is outstanding. This is a massive difference which has totally changed our operation. “This has enabled us to turn around work far quicker with a level of consistency that has meant we can take on much bigger contracts with tighter deadlines. We get better finishes on edges, because when you spray by hand it is difficult to get the evenness achievable with a machine and when you’re spraying by hand the potential for ‘runs’ is much greater.”

Trouble free installation and training “In terms of the delivery and installation of the machine, everything went very smoothly. Once we had prepared the space in the workshop with electrics and extraction, the engineer was able to install the machine within a couple of days. This

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

included providing our operator with full training on the machine. Since then our operator has had no problems operating the Prima so it really was very effective training. “One of the biggest advantages of the machine is the labour saving. Previously we had to have a number of skilled hand sprayers, now we can use general labourers who are far more cost effective for the business. Overall, the machine will probably have paid for itself within two years.”

HOMAG UK - a pleasure to do business with “From our point of view, dealing with HOMAG UK has been a real pleasure. All the dealings we have had with them have been fantastic; they always do what they say they are going to do and that gives us real peace of mind. On the odd occasion we’ve had to call an engineer they’ve been really helpful,” concludes Neil. SANDING

BÜTFERING – The Pinnacle Of Wide Belt Sanding BÜTFERING sanding machines are used by woodworking companies all over the world. For over 60 years, the company has been developing innovative, customer-oriented machine solutions that set the standard for the rest of the industry. Part of The HOMAG Group, BÜTFERING has a portfolio of machines designed for craft workshops through to high-tech industrial manufacturing plants. All the models boast German technology and engineering, world renowned for its quality and reliability. The BÜTFERING range starts with the SWT 100 series. These entry-level wide belt sanders are equipped with up to three sanding heads to ensure perfect sanding results both on solid wood and veneered panels. The next in the range is the versatile SWT 200 series for sanding solid wood to veneer and intermediate sealer sanding. The design of the SWT 300 series sets new standards for wide belt sanders. This popular series is available as free spec models for sanding solid wood, veneer, sealer and filler coat. The BÜTFERING SWT 500 series features the magnetic pad system MPS and is constructed with the patented SORB TECH material delivering far better vibration absorption over welded steel frames for resonance-free operation. It also boasts the latest sanding technology including energy efficient ECOTECH and the trend setting X-Head. For industrial manufacturers BÜTFERING has developed the Profiline SWT 700 and 900 series wide belt sanders. These advanced machines set new standards in technology, ergonomics and productivity.

BÜTFERING in action – HOMAG UK’s customers explain the benefits Hazlin of Ludlow is an expanding British manufacturer of high quality, bespoke architectural veneered doors, frames, panels, screens, furniture and other joinery items. Since it was formed in April 1974, Hazlin has devoted itself to becoming the best in the market. As part of its strategy to

BÜTFERING’s state-of-the-art production line is a foundation for its renowned quality and reliability

achieve this goal, the business has always invested in the best machinery it could afford. “We first started dealing with BÜTFERING almost 20 years ago,” explains Chris Jones, managing director at Hazlin. The reason we bought the BÜTFERING SWT 955 was to respond to an architectural ‘fashion’ that has significantly increased the demand for horizontal veneers on doors – a horizontal veneer being when the grain runs across the width of the door rather than the traditional vertical veneer which runs top to bottom. “Our previous BÜTFERING sander, the SWO 313, which is still a good machine, has a cross belt and two longitudinal belts. So when sanding veneers that were laid horizontal, we had to put the parts through

the machine twice using the cross belt on the last pass to remove all sanding scratches in the veneers. “With our new SWT 955, we have a longitudinal belt followed by two cross belts so we can sand in one pass. This not only saves time, but also gives us an improved finish as each cross belt goes the opposite way to one another. “The new pad technology on the SWT 955 is significantly better. The pads respond much faster and more accurately which has all but eliminated any ‘sand-throughs’. What’s more, the latest software that controls it is more versatile; you can feather the pressure in so, as the part enters the machine, you can slow it down then build pressure up as the part travels through. It is just a very, very good piece of kit.”

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

SANDING Three big advantages “The new sander has delivered three big advantages to our business. Perhaps the most important to us is the accuracy of sand because when you’re sanding various different types of veneer that is very important. “Secondly the ability to take veneer tape off is a great benefit because to get skilled labour to remove veneer tape effectively isn’t easy. Getting the gum residue out of the veneer is tricky but with the SWT 955 we can do it quickly and easily. “Finally, being a veneer company, we just needed to be able to sand to a much higher standard in one pass rather than two. The new finishing sander gives us this productivity gain with a very high standard of finish. “From a productivity point of view the new sander is saving us a couple of minutes a door, so if you’re doing a hundred doors it doesn’t take long to add up to substantial time savings. This time saving has allowed us to move labour to other areas in the production process,” concludes Chris Jones. Peter Thompson of York relies on BÜTFERING to hone tough hardwoods Bespoke joinery company Peter Thompson of York has a heritage spanning nearly 40 years, the company designs, hand-crafts and installs some of the country’s most amazing kitchens, interiors, floors and staircases. The business specialises in creating products predominantly out of solid hardwoods such as oak, walnut, maple and mahogany, all sourced from sustainable forests. “Our clients are discerning people and they demand a top quality product backed up with first class service,” claims Robert Thompson, the company’s managing director. He continues, “Given the nature of the materials we work with, we have to invest in heavy-duty equipment that can handle these tough hardwoods.”

Better quality, lower running costs “In our business, the finish is exceptionally important. This meant when it came to selecting a sander for the company we had to make sure it could do a first class job. We wanted a four head machine so we could complete work in one

The BÜTFERING SWT 300 series sets new standard for industrial wide belt sanders

pass. The BÜTFERING is three times faster than our old machine at processing a set of doors yet the quality of the finish is superb. “We are also saving money on sanding belts. The BÜTFERING SWT 345 is very efficient on belt usage, so we don’t have to change them so often which also means we have less machine downtime. “The BÜTFERING SWT 345 has certainly met our expectations. It has delivered a new level of quality, it’s fast and it’s efficient which is exactly what we were looking for in a wide belt sander, enthuses Robert.”

HOMAG UK opens the doors to profit for Cotswold Manufacturing Located in an 80,000 sq. ft. factory in Thornaby, North East England, Cotswold Manufacturing is a privately owned company that manufactures and supplies doors, doorsets and internal glazed screens for use across the commercial, residential, leisure and education sectors of the construction industry. “Our business is built on quality and service,” claims Stuart Burnett, the company’s Operations Director. He continues, “We had been having problems with the quality and service we were getting from other door suppliers and so in 2013 we decided to set up our own door manufacturing cell. “We looked at a number of potential suppliers but, after visiting HOMAG’s Treff

in Germany and discussing our requirements in detail with HOMAG UK, we settled on equipment from the HOMAG Group to supply the majority of the machinery for our new venture. “Having had previous experience of HOMAG equipment, I was totally confident of the quality, reliability and after sales service they would supply. For the door manufacturing cell we specified a HOMAG KAL 310 edgebander, a BÜTFERING SWT 335 finishing sander, a HOLZMA HPP 250 beam saw and a CEFLA Roller Application line.”

A knowledgeable and helpful team “One of the major benefits we like about dealing with HOMAG UK is that all the people there are so helpful and knowledgeable. From the sales and support staff to the service engineers, there is a genuine desire to help. They want a longterm relationship and always go out of their way to give the best advice for our business”. “John Shepherd, the HOMAG area sales manager, is a pleasure to work with. He understands our business and looks after us even when we are not in the market to buy. HOMAG’s after sales service too is excellent. When we do need an engineer HOMAG invariably has an engineer onsite the next day. We also get superb support over the phone from Kev Kaye who can dial into the machines remotely to help us with any issues. If Kev can’t help, the engineers in Germany can also connect remotely to help sort any issues, so we really are well looked after. If you would like more information or a demonstration of any of the BÜTFERING sanders and control software please contact Adele Dixon on 01332 856424.

Ney, Doing Things Differently Why follow when you can lead? It’s a question that has made woodworking machinery and components supplier, Ney Ltd think outside the box and do things a little differently. Ney’s latest in-house event is a prime example of this ambitious philosophy, which has been behind the company’s continual success for many years. Held to coincide with W14, the four-day event gave exhibition attendees an opportunity to dropin and see the latest products for themselves. “The idea was simple,” says Managing Director, Gerd Ney. “We showcase new product twice a year in our purpose-built 25,000 sq ft showroom. It gives new and existing customers an opportunity to explore our portfolio and see what we, as a company, can offer. As we’re situated only 12 miles from the NEC, we wanted to open our doors to the public during the biggest woodworking show in

the UK, offering W14 visitors the chance to come and visit us before or after the show,” explains Gerd. With strong visitor numbers and several orders taken at the show, the event did not disappoint. Over 50 machines were on show, with several models shown for the first time under the Ney umbrella, including and the new OMC Press and the latest machines from its new partnership with Italian machinery manufacturer, Vitap. The show also offered visitors an opportunity to talk to engineers and see the machines in action. “Nobody knows the ins and outs of a machine like the manufacturer, so we always invite the engineers to our shows,” explains Gerd. “They can talk you through the machine, offer demonstrations and give sound advice. It’s a service that most machinery suppliers can’t offer so it is a great selling point for us.” The showroom also exhibited the latest

components available from the Coventrybased distributor, including a new kitchen and bedroom spotlight and strip light range. Gerd adds, “Components are very important to us. They allow us to be the complete solution for manufacturers. Our latest spot, strip and touch sensitive lights complement the exist range of sliding doors, wirework and kitchen and bedroom doors we have on offer and what better place to show them off than on our lifestyle display?” With so many products on display, it’s clear to see why Ney’s in-house exhibitions are proving a success. Gerd adds, “We simply wouldn’t be able to show this many products on an exhibition stand. Behind the scenes, we have our entire sales team at the show to welcome their customers personally and trained engineers on hand to guide you step by step. This kind of oneon-one service will always work best for us. It’s the Ney way.”

Make Forests Happy This Christmas with the Stylish and Sustainable timbatree Start a new Christmas tradition with the stylish and sustainable timbatree, and make rocking around the Christmas tree one to remember this year. Timbatree is lovingly designed and handmade in Britain by carpenter Joost Taylor, using FSC certified redwood sourced from smiling Scandinavian forests. Made from quality softwood, these trees will last more than a lifetime. The simplicity of the design ensures you don't need to be a DIY wonder to put it together. No needles, screws or nails, just a few quick clicks and your tree is ready to dress. Decorate your tree with your own

unique and inspirational decorations. Baked goodies, handcrafted baubles and heirloom ornaments are just a few of the endless possibilities. Kids will have hours of fun decorating their timbatree. And what’s more, you can personalise your tree with the names of your loved ones carved into the branches so it can grow with you and your family. Fancy a splash of colour? Choose from a tempting selection of twelve Chalk Paint™ decorative paints by Annie Sloan, so you can make your alternative Christmas tree even more individual. Joost Taylor comments, “I really wanted

to create something that was a fun and beautiful alternative to the traditional Christmas tree. Many of us want to reduce our carbon footprint yet find the faux plastic trees a little too kitsch for our homes. The timbatree is perfect if you want an alternative tree that looks fantastic and can be used year after year.” When it comes to Twelfth Night, just take it down and store in the recycled box for next year - no mess, no hassle, no worries. Timbatree is available in three sizes - L (180cm high X 110cm diameter), £ 229, M (120cm high X 90cm diameter), £ 159 or S (90cm high X 70cm diameter), £ 129 from www.timbatree.co.uk, www.notonthehightstreet.com or through independent retailers.

DUST EXTRACTION Masterclass In Energy-Saving Extraction with DCS Sigma 3 Kitchens Ltd is yet another company to have benefitted from retrofitting ECOGATE® ‘extractionon-demand’ technology, and has achieved dramatically reduced dust extraction running costs at its factory in South Wales. Sigma 3 Kitchens is one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of kitchens and bedrooms in the UK and its state-ofthe-art factory is the manufacturing centre for its flagship ‘Masterclass’ kitchen collection. The Masterclass brand features a standard range of over 300 door styles; satisfying demand from the middle to upper end of the market. The company also offers a bespoke made-to-measure service for non-standard spaces and cabinets which further extends the potential of the Masterclass brand. Sigma 3 first identified dust extraction optimisation as a possible source of energy savings over a year ago and called in Ecogate’s authorised installer, Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS), who provided a free site survey which included a full energy appraisal of the extraction system. The existing system employed three fixed-speed main fan sets along with a waste conveying fan, and was extracting dust and chips on a

continuous basis from all panel processing machines throughout the 50,000 sq ft factory. Recorded data on energy usage was analysed and, together with information gleaned from observing the overall production process, DCS and Ecogate engineers determined that each fan set could be adjusted for volume and duty cycle to facilitate a significant reduction in power consumption. This would be achieved by retrofitting Ecogate technology and it was

confidently estimated that the system would result in energy savings of around £21,000 per year. Sigma 3 commissioned DCS to install an Ecogate system which comprises: three Ecogate greenBOX12 controllers, Ecogate motorised gates fitted to all machines, and variable speed drives for each of the three main fans. The greenBOX12 controllers constantly monitor individual machines and determine the optimum speed of the respective fan. The system also detects when machines are inactive, and motorised gates only open when material is being processed. MORE Ian Rayner, UK Sales Manager at Ecogate Ltd, reports: “A year on from commissioning the energy-saving system, Ecogate engineers revisited the site and interrogated each controller; collected data confirmed that annual savings accurately matched our predictions, and also means that Sigma 3 is on track with its planned 2year payback on the investment made in Ecogate technology.”

DUST EXTRACTION Dustraction to Service Waste Styrofoam Cutting and Maintain Neutral/Slightly Positive Factory Pressure Panel Systems is a unique manufacturer of panel products, processing an extensive range of materials including rigid and foam plastics, compact grade laminate, aluminium and plastic honeycomb plus more traditional materials such as MDF, plywood and chipboard. The Sheffield based company operates from three sites specialising in composite panels, foam fabrication and CNC machining. Recent investment by Panel Systems in a 5 axis CNC created a need for Dustraction to install an externally mounted filter discharging panel waste directly to an enclosed skip. There are high level gas heaters inside the new building and return air ductwork has been necessary to ensure that a “neutral/slightly positive pressure” is maintained inside the factory, so that the balanced flues of the gas heaters operate correctly. Over the past ten years Panel Systems has had a strong commitment to investment in the latest manufacturing

machinery using knowledge-based skills and strong ‘partnership’ links with both customers and suppliers. Strong sales growth across the range of branded products resulted in the need to convert a warehouse into a new manufacturing unit to help develop its range of CNC machining products and services. Panel Systems’ waste extraction upgrade is based on servicing 3xSCM CNC routers, Homag beam saw, double-end tenoner and other equipment. A Dustrax No.27 tubular sock-type filter has now been installed to handle growth up to an anticipated duty cycle of 5.15m3/sec. The Dustrax filter comprises a floormounted extraction fanset which, being internally sited, will benefit from Dustraction’s new low noise impellers and also from two automatic shaker systems to manage the build up of dust cake and general waste and to ensure that the extraction system is operating at optimum efficiency. The control panel of the system is equipped with all necessary contactors, timers and overloads and is CE marked to

ensure full compliance with existing and foreseeable regulations. Operations Manager Pauline Harris at Panel Systems says that Dustration’s new central collection will improve production flow by extracting waste from all machines simultaneously and now operating fully automatically, rather than by managing waste from machines individually. “There will be only one central waste bag to worry about in future,” she says, “instead of about 10 around the shop floor currently, all working on different machines individually.” “At the moment,” Pauline adds, “we are constantly stopping machines to allow cutter waste to be bagged up at each different source but our new Dustrax 27, collecting from all machines imultaneously, is going to make a massive difference to production flow and also, of course, to waste management efficiency.” For further information: Tel: 0116 271 3212 Email: steve.matuska@dustraction.co.uk

DUST EXTRACTION

Reputation for Reliability Wood Waste Technology has just installed a new wood waste heater into a joinery company in Hertfordshire. The team at family business, Crompton Joinery contacted Wood Waste Technology

when they were looking to quickly purchase a reliable wood waste heater, to replace one they’d purchased around five years ago from another manufacturer which had broken down beyond repair.

MD of Crompton Joinery, Steve Haskins says, “We were gutted when our wood waste heater malfunctioned and couldn’t be fixed. Having experienced the money saving benefits of biomass technology, we wanted to get a new one as soon as possible, otherwise we were going to have to start spending around £2000 a month on waste disposal again, plus money on heating to keep our 30 staff warm - but needed it to be a reliable model that could last a long time.” The company got in touch with Wood Waste Technology, which has an excellent reputation for reliability, with every heater ever produced by the company still in operation today. The team decided on a WT25A automatic wood waste heater, which was installed into Crompton Joinery’s 10,000 square foot factory in Stevenage. Steve continues, “We’re delighted with the service we’ve received from Kurt Cockroft and the team at Wood Waste Technology. The heater is perfect for our needs, was quickly installed, and the company has delivered on everything it promised us. I wish we’d bought one from them before.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.
