NEWS BWF Launches New and Improved U-Value Service for Windows The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) has re-launched its basic U-value calculation service to bring it in line with the Construction Products Regulation (CPR). The CPR’s introduction on 1st July 2013 means that businesses with 10 staff or more, or with a turnover of ¤2million or more – known as small and medium enterprises (SMEs) – are required to have their U-value calculations validated by a notified body. The BWF has teamed up with a notified body, the British Board of Agrément (BBA), to ensure that all calculations supplied by the BWF can be validated for SMEs to be compliant with the CPR. Chris Addison, BWF Technical Officer, who runs the BWF’s basic U-value calculation service, said: “Approval of our U-value calculations by the BBA means that joinery firms can be confident that their windows comply with the Building Regulations, can secure compliance in a cost effective manner – and of course – be used for CE marking purposes. “We work with each company to get their window to the required U-value and then issue them with a certificate, which they can use to prove compliance for Building Control, clients, and well as use to promote their products’ performance.” Micro enterprises with 9 or fewer employees still do not require notified body validation for U-values, but are still required to provide a U-value for Building Control approval. The BWF’s basic U-value calculation service is also available for micro enterprises to access. Norbord Considering Major Investment At Inverness Plant On February 7 2014 Norbord submitted a notice of intent for a planning application to Highland Council for a major investment in its OSB (oriented strand board) manufacturing site at Morayhill, near Inverness, Scotland. The application is subsequent to a detailed feasibility study into upgrading the current 25-year old facility to include stateof-the-art continuous press and environmental control technologies. This investment would help secure the long term future of the 130 staff directly employed at the site, as well as over 300 jobs supported indirectly through the supply chain.

NEWS Signs Of Recovery For UK Furniture Industry Information from a publication released at the end of 2013 hints at a small recovery for furniture manufacturing in the UK, but this improvement is overshadowed by poor export performance and China gaining a massive foothold of our import market. A statistics digest which contains key information about current furniture industry market trends, essential for strategic business planning, is now available. The annual analysis of furniture industry statistics is researched and published by the Furniture Industry Research Association. Established sixty four years ago, the Association provides invaluable technical support to the entire furniture supply chain and funds projects for the benefit of the industry. Statistics from the Digest, combined with anecdotal evidence, also show that the general public appears to be happy to lend (and spend) more money and housing starts and transactions are up (although nowhere near the pre 2008 figures). These are all positive signs for the UK furniture sector which manufactured £6.5 billion of product in 2012 and is hoping to have improved on this by the end of 2013. The significance of imported furniture is reflected by the fact that, at between £4.3 and £4.5 billion, it comprises 40% of the home market. Predictions are that this will have increased slightly by the end of 2013. Exports, however, have remained relatively static for many years and struggle to reach the £1 billion level. Dr. Peter Beele, FIRA International’s Technical Development Manager, commented: “Whilst the differences between the latest government figures (2012) and the previous year are relatively small, they indicate key longer term trends and show some interesting anomalies. For example, furniture manufacturing is an important contributor to UK manufacturing, but of greater importance to government, employs many more people per pound of turnover than most other sectors. “Our Statistics Digest does much of the hard work and number crunching that would otherwise be a laborious task for strategic planners and as any good MD, or bank, will attest, understanding current market trends, and predicting future developments are critical components of business planning. We are pleased to announce the release of this year’s publication which is now available on our website.” The Statistics Digest comprises almost 40 pages of facts, figures and commentary covering production and international trade for a wide range of product groups. It also assesses some of the key drivers behind furniture spend such as lending and house purchasing patterns. AWARDS Combi-WR4 Wins FLTA Ergonomics Award Further success for 4-way forklift specialist The Combi-WR4, Combilift’s new pedestrian truck and the smallest model in its range to date has won the Ergonomics Award at this year’s UK Fork Lift Truck Association awards for Excellence. The Combi-WR4 is the first purpose built 4-way pedestrian reach stacker which combines multi-directional travel with features such as a pantograph reach, side shift and tilting fork carriage for handling long loads and pallets in very narrow aisles and is the only truck of its kind able to work in aisle-widths of 2.1m pallet to pallet.

With its unique patented multi-position tiller, electronic power steering and fingertip controls it is easy and effortless to operate: push button control rotates the rear wheel parallel to the chassis and back again which reduces the need for leaning, reaching and bending and minimises general manual strain when picking and placing loads. Mark Whyte from Combilift accepted the “Archie“ trophy from Derek Anderson of award sponsor PowerCell Industrial Battery Engineers, making this the sixth time that Combilift products have won various FLTA category awards over the past nine years. Commenting on Combilift’s latest achievement the Fork Lift Truck Association said: “The Ergonomics Award celebrates Combilift’s drive to keep fork lift truck operators comfortable and safe, while achieving the highest levels of productivity and efficiency.”

A Chair Fit for a Prince Specially designed, hand-made high chair fit for a Prince to be delivered to the Duchess of Cambridge, by The Furniture Makers’ Company Wednesday, 12 February at Kensington Palace, HRH The Duchess of Cambridge will receive personally a gift for HRH Prince George - a specially designed, handmade high chair from The Furniture Makers’ Company, the furnishing industry’s charity. Five eminent furniture designers were tasked by the Company to produce a chair fit for a prince and Sussex-based craftswoman Katie Walker won the competition. Chairman of the judges Hugh Garforth-Bles said: “All of the entries were of the highest quality, but Katie’s was the most modern and original design. The chair is much more intricate to make than
it appears. It will be the perfect first chair for Prince George.” Katie Walker commented: “I was thrilled to win this commission; it is wonderful to be chosen to represent my profession in creating a real piece of history. I’m also delighted to be able to deliver the chair personally to Her Royal Highness.” Katie will be accompanied by Jonathan Hindle, the Master of The Furniture Maker’s Company, who said: “This chair is a great example of how the UK is leading the world in design excellence and proving how much our industry is benefitting from recent investment.” The chair is made in rippled ash
(Fraxinus Excelsior), originating from a tree felled in the Longleat Estate in 2001. Ash was chosen because it would be particularly white. The chair is finished with white tinted hard wax oil. The backrest curves around the body for comfort and this curve allows one front leg of the chair to flow seamlessly into the other. In order to achieve this, the front legs and the top rail of the backrest are steam bent. All other curved elements are laminated from ash veneer or birch plywood. Claude Daly Retires After 40 Years of PR Mention PR in the woodworking industry and the first name that springs to almost everyone’s mind is the ever popular, Claude Daly. Claude qualified as an aeronautical engineer and trained as a technical writer with Rolls Royce where he worked as Publications Manager for 15 years. In 1971 he decided to branch out into public relations and worked as Publicity Manager for Wadkin Limited based in Leicester. Following redundancy he formed his own PR company in 1983 – Claude Daly Associates – ably assisted by his daughter, Jan. He went on to represent many of the leading woodworking machinery manufacturers – Weinig, J.J. Smith, SCM, Schelling, Maka, TM Machinery/Striebig and Busellato – becoming an industry icon for over 40 years. It has been my pleasure to know and work with Claude for over 30 years. With the very obvious growth of the Materials and Components content at W14 it would be easy to overlook an equally remarkable expansion of the machinery area. Writing this in late January I look at the floor plan and see a huge confidence in the industry, and therefore in the exhibition. The biggest players continue to sit at the heart of the area. Homag can be guaranteed to put on a good show and notable increases in floor area come from SCM, Felder, JMJ, Altendorf and Advanced Machinery. RW continue to have influence across the halls. Many other well- known machinery names have increased their presence or plan to ramp up their style of doing things at W14. Everything says that our industry anticipates that the time for investment by manufacturers is at hand, and the exhibition in October is where many of those key decisions will be made. The origins of the machinery section of W14 are of course in the Woodmex
future. This must give W14 one of the most impressive heritages in the UK. For me, the fact that this exhibition features running machinery is one of its major attractions. We are a practical

industry, always requiring technical capability to under pin the market advances. Training and expertise are vital industry assets which get the best out of the amazing machinery and skilled people available to us. This input of knowledge and experience is available to anyone browsing around at W14, visitors getting a chance to talk to and be advised by some of the most knowledgeable people in the industry. New exhibitors are already booked to join the machinery ranks at W14 and the organisers tell me that more are in the process of securing their space. Panhans, Robland, Beck, Barbaren, Venjacob and Packsize are the most recent to secure exhibiting contracts. It’s nice to see Freud back with a substantial presence and I’m looking forward to seeing this floor plan come to life at the NEC. As far as I can see every machinery option is covered
somewhere in those halls. Just a word about the co-location with Timber Expo this year. Many in the industry are delighted that this conference based exhibition has decided to come alongside W14 at the NEC. The two audiences may both have elements rooted in timber building but they are quite different. Specifiers are the name of game for Timber Expo while W14 is the natural home for manufacturers. However, good things happen when two events get together like this and crossover of visitors (Timber Expo attracted an audience of over 4,000 in its last outing at the Ricoh Arena) should be high. It’s also going to be good to see TRADA with an opportunity to inject its educational expertise at the events. EVENTS SCM Groups “The Home Event” 2014 Thursday 10th to Tuesday 15th of April "THE HOME EVENT" is the name of the SCM Group's latest event which is due to attract thousands of visitors from all over the World to their showrooms and factories of the Rimini-based Group - the World's leader in the production of technologies for processing wood, plastic, glass and composite materials. SANDERS New Sanding Brush Units from Kündig In response to customer demand, Kündig has developed new sanding brush units, increasing the versatility of Kündig wide-belt sanders and enhancing the company’s ability to produce truly bespoke wide-belt sanders. These are available in the UK, through the UK subsidiary, Kündig Ltd, and its appointed regional distributors. “From several customers and distributors, we noticed increasing demand to find a finishing (wood and lacquer) solution for profiled panels, frames, doors, etc,” says Kündig’s Sales Export Manager, Juergen Schuster. “I think especially in North America and Russia, but of course also other markets, such profiled work pieces are common. “From a customer perspective, it was always the demand to find a ‘onemachine’ solution in order to keep the production lines short or to avoid having two separate production runs through two separate machines. “With the new sanding brush units, we can now offer either a hybrid machine (brush & wide-belt in one machine) or single sanding brush sanders (without any wide-belt unit),” in addition to Kündig’s existing wide-belt range. Juergen continues, “At the end of the day, the result will be very individual machines depending on a specific customer’s needs or wishes,” although he stresses that in order to plan the layout, it is important to receive from the customer all the production para- meters as well as samples for test-brushing: an example of the attention to detail that characterises the Kündig range. He adds, “I think with these units we cover with our machines and unit portfolio all the
finishing needs in the woodworking industry that a customer can have.” The new line of brush systems are available as ‘stand alone’ machines or can be integrated with the options of the various wide belt sanding heads. For example, for customers manufacturing five piece doors, a suitable configuration may be a calibration unit followed by the sanding brushes: such a machine could presand before lacquering and de-nib after lacquering. Customers working with MDF panels which have been routed and need preparing prior to spraying, for example, may prefer a machine with just brushing heads. The new brush units can be offered for solid wood and veneers, for painted or lacquered surfaces: if you make it, there is a Kündig model that can sand it. Carl O’Meara of Kündig Ltd says of the new options: “It comes as no surprise that these
new sanding heads work in a somewhat unique fashion. Kündig’s approach is always from a different direction, where they have the ability of ‘thinking outside the box’. ” Examples of Kündig’s unique approach include the oblique sanding method and the fact that it is the sanding head that rises and falls rather than the workpiece, both factors that are consistently popular with Kündig’s broad customer base. And the addition of the sanding brush units to the range of options available from Kündig enhances the company’s ability to provide truly bespoke machines, perhaps best exemplified by the company’s Technic range. The development of the new sanding brush range also demonstrates Kündig’s customer-first policy: the sanding brushes have been developed in response to customer demand, and arise from the typical Kündig response to unusual specifications from its customers: “how can we meet this need, even if it is somewhat different to everything we have ever done before?”. Need a Better ‘Finish Cut’ in MFC and Longer Lasting Saw Blades? “We tried everything to fix what we thought was an issue with our beam saw. The melamine-faced chipboard kept chipping and we were sending five sets of beam saw blades out for sharpening every week; that is, until we found Leitz Tooling.” Neil Wade, owner of CJ Kitchens in Cambridgeshire, explains problems the company had as recently as 2012. As designers and manufacturers of highquality kitchens and bedroom installation and furniture, CJ Kitchens prides itself on providing quality and craftsmanship to the highest standards. The company was also a contractor on the 1960s ambulance-tocampervan episode of Channel 4’s “George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces”, where they worked with the Norfolk-based family of six and TV production team to convert the tiny ramshackle ambulance interior into a small scale design dream. The company also manufactures and supplies carcassing to building contractors for large scale residential, commercial and education projects. “We had a real problem,” recalls Mr Wade.

“The rectification and board trimming alone was taking up serious time, time we needed to do the work coming through. We had six sets of blades for the beam saw but were always running out of them and sending them out to be sharpened.” The previous saw service returned the blades sharpened and wax-coated but the MFC would still chip and the blades’ edge would not last. CJ Kitchens turned to Leitz Tooling, who visited the workshop near Huntingdon. Mr Wade said, “It was a very helpful visit. They looked at what we were producing and how we did it and took away a couple of blades for sharpening. Once the first one was back on the beam saw, we didn’t change it for four weeks and the MFC cut more smoothly than we’d ever seen.” At their workshop, CJ Kitchens manufacture full production of one complete kitchen every day, using up to 9 sheets of 2.8m x 2070mm x 18mm melamine faced chipboard. From sending five sets of beam saws blades per week for sharpening, with Leitz they now send one set every three to four weeks. After the success with Leitz sharpening service, the company decided to invest in Leitz Razor-cut saw blades. “Some of the slightly cheaper MFC used to chip badly and the time needed to rectify the work and check and even replace the saw blades wiped out any marginal cost saving on the product. But we are finding that with producers of MFC working to improve their product and using Leitz saw blades and servicing, our work is a whole lot easier.” The word soon spread, and local fitters now drop their saw blades at CJ Kitchen’s workshop to be serviced by Leitz. “I know first-hand how good Leitz service and product is, and the fitters we work with tell me every time that their Leitz sharpened saw blades come back much sharper and last much
longer. That’s all we need to know.” Brian Maddox, Leitz Tooling sales manager said, “We know our Razor-Cut saw blades are the best available, and a trial with our saw blades can make a huge difference in down time and setting time, duration and quality. Like CJ Kitchens, we want more manufacturers to talk to us about what we can do to transform their production lines. The time and cost saving potential in downtime is huge, particularly when combined with our expert sharpening services.”

A Helping Hand When starting a business seems like a tough task, Ney’s finance package and follow up service is there to support you as WG Kitchens found out. “We wouldn’t be here today without Ney,” begins Steve Green, Managing Director of WG Kitchens. With over 30 years of experience in the woodworking industry, Steve was aware of Ney’s solid reputation as a woodworking machinery supplier and through the grape vine, had heard stories about its willingness to help small businesses grow. With his sights firmly set on creating his own furniture manufacturing business, he approached Ney, hoping to have his own success story to tell… “It was now or never,” recalls Steve. “My colleague and I had just been made redundant from a contract kitchen company and we both knew that it was the right time to set up our own business.” Together, the duo put a business plan together, with the right machinery at the forefront of their minds. “Like any new company, money was tight,” explains Steve. “From the off, we knew we wanted to make high-quality cabinetry for the retail market – less superior products were not an option for us. To do this we would need several machines but we knew that getting the right machinery at a price we could afford would be no mean feat.” After securing some funding from the

government’s Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Steve, like so many other small business owners, turned to Ney’s ProWood Finance team. “We’d heard great things about Ney’s finance agreements and the options didn’t disappoint. The
terms were flexible and perfectly suited to a new company. ProWood also allowed us to purchase different machines as we continued to grow, simply and economically - something we have utilised in the four years we have been in business.” Establishing the business in a 3,000 square foot unit in Staffordshire, the workshop included four machines, all purchased through Ney. A range of new and used machines were chosen to reflect WG Kitchen’s budget: a radius Edgebander and trimming machine, a Paoloni Beam Saw, an Ortza edgebanding machine and an Ortza CNC machine. Ney’s engineers were also on hand to train staff on how to use and maintain each machine. Growth for the company was quick and larger premises and more staff were required a few years later. “We reached the targets of our five year business plan in two years. We simply needed more space

to cope with the orders,” explains Steve. With the company’s turnover almost doubling year on year and its growth up by 225% since it opened for business, it wasn’t only the premises that needed to be upgraded. “With unexpected growth we
found that the machinery we originally bought was struggling with the workload. We were needing to create over 200 cabinets a week – something our machines were not designed to do,” explains Steve. “We spoke to Ney and together we came up
with a solution. Within 24 hours we had new machines being delivered to the premises and old ones being taken away.” The new machines included a Fravol Smart, which was chosen specifically for WG Kitchen’s work. “Ney has made a point of getting to know us and the work we do, which has proved extremely useful when researching new machinery and components. The Smart was recommended to us because of our work with 50mm board. It’s the only one on the market in this price-bracket that can work with a material this thick.” Additional growth was also taken into account with the arrival of a MasterWood Project 310 CNC and a Mayer beam saw. “Each machine was demonstrated to us in Ney’s showroom and both Ney and WG Kitchens were confident that the machinery would increase productivity considerably without the need for more staff – manufacturing up to 350 cabinets a week.” For now, this is where the story ends but the next chapter is in sight. INSTALLATION Cross and Sansam Install Second SCM Routech 5-Axis Chronos with a Massive Table Size Cross and Sansam are a well established family run business specialising in pattern and mould making and general wood machining, based in Shepshed, near Loughborough in Leicestershire. They have recently expanded further by taking delivery of a second SCM Routech Chronos HT 5-axis CNC Machining Centre with a larger worktable and machining area, and thought to be the largest machine of its type manufactured by Routech for the European market. Cross and Sansam's company policy has always been based upon manufacturing and supplying a quality product, delivered on time, using their wealth of experience, technical know-how and long gained experience of their customer's requirements. All sales are obtained by their reputation and repeat business. Pattern and mould making is a large percentage of the manufacturing at Cross and Sansam, but in recent years, the company has moved into specialist wood machining and mouldings, in both hard and soft woods, with stair handrails and components, flooring and wood turning being produced on a wide range of machinery located in their wood mill including CNC Machining Centres, Planer Moulders, Sanders, etc.. Customers in a wide range of industries are supplied, including aerospace, automotive, composites, marine, medical, transport and water treatment, with automotive and other specialist materials now becoming more evident in their customers' requirements. As David & James Sansam were very impressed with their first Routech Chronos installed 3 years ago, Cross and Sansam quickly confirmed an order with SCM for a second Chronos HT with a 4250 x 4250mm table size, with delivery and installation taking place last November. With a 900mm Z-axis capacity, machining is carried out by an 8.5KW

INSTALLATION programs using a graphical editor and tool parameters. The possibility of importing DXF files allows integration of CAD/CAM packages with Cross and Sansam using "Mastercam" CAD/CAM. Customers paper drawings, emailed drawings or scanned components are converted into programs to be sent directly to the 5-axis Chronos. With patterns for castings, machine operator, Simon Riley, comments "With our experience, we can add various contraction values to a program depending upon the final metal being cast, or we can scale or factor up or down dimensions as required. Patterns are made from a combination of wood, plywood and various synthetic materials. Rough component shapes are band-sawed out and then fitted to a base board that is then fixed to the table of the Chronos for machining. For machining, a typical job uses a tool that is a 20mm end mill for roughing out, running at 14,000 rpm, with a feed speed of 15 metres/minute, stepping down 3mm at a time. When finishing, a 10mm cutter with a 1mm radius is employed running at 18,000 rpm at a 10 metres/min feed speed stepping down at 0.25mm. The final finish obtained is excellent. Simon Riley has noticed the new Chronos is about 20% faster in positioning speed as this Chronos now employs
intelligent encoders that remember where they are with a battery back-up, and also, there is no requirement to reference the X, Y and Z axes, only the A and C fourth and fifth axes. Also, with the additional travel of the routing head over the table area, an additional 500mm of capacity is achievable on 3 sides, so that even larger components can be machined, especially when applying automotive components. David Sansam comments "Since installation of the second SCM Chronos, we have again been very impressed with its accuracy and quality of finish on the patterns and components after machining, whether they are very large up to the machine's capacity or fairly small, intricate component parts. HOMAG Doubles Productivity for Silverlining Furniture Since its inception in 1985, Silverlining has become one of Britain’s leading furniture makers. It has achieved this through founder Mark Boddington’s love of wood and his passion for perfection in the world of furniture design and production. Now, nearly three decades since he set up shop in a disused cow barn in Cheshire, his company’s innovative and awardwinning furniture can be found in palaces, museums, galleries, corporate headquarters, high-end residences and superyachts worldwide. Boddington learned his trade under the watchful eye of renowned furniture designer, John Makepeace OBE. At just 21, Boddington opted out of his family’s famous brewing empire to launch his own business, Silverlining – a name which was inspired by his early use of inlaid silver in furniture.
Commissions for the rich and famous Early commissions included work for the Grosvenor Family’s remodelled Eaton Hall, the most significant of which was a suite of furniture including 14 English walnut and exotic inlaid wood dining chairs. By the 1990s, Silverlining was creating and exporting furniture for clients around the world, including pieces for David Bowie’s London and New York homes, and for Kevin Costner’s Hollywood mansion. Soon after, the company was commissioned to work on its first superyacht – the Royal Motor Yacht, Claire, owned by Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei – this was the start of a longstanding affiliation with the yachting fraternity.

Craftsman’s quality challenge As you’d expect from such a prestigious furniture maker, the company has always prided itself on the outstanding craftsman it employs to create its masterpieces. With the rapid expansion of the business, the challenge it now faced was how it could keep up with an ever-increasing demand for its bespoke furniture and push the limits of 21st century deign and craftsmanship with technology and material innovations. Luke Briggs, CNC production manager for Silverlining takes up the story, “We carve a lot of furniture legs out of solid wood and historically this has taken our craftsman two or three days to hand-carve each leg. That’s a very labour intensive exercise and one which was causing a bottleneck in production. “The issue we faced was how to speed up this operation without any loss of
quality. John Lambert, our senior project manager, researched the market and decided a state-of-the-art CNC machine was a potential solution. More due diligence followed which led to John drawing up a short list of three potential suppliers, one of which was HOMAG.”

PROFILE The WEEKE ABD 060 Optimat CNCDrilling and Dowel Inserting Machine Premiered at Ligna 2013, the WEEKE ABD 060 Optimat CNC-drilling and dowel inserting machine is the perfect complementary product for all nesting solutions. The small compact machine has a high-speed, horizontal drilling gear with three individually selectable spindles and one dowelling aggregate. All three axes are CNC-controlled and thus ensure top quality production with a variety of materials including MDF, MFC and plywood. The CNC-controlled X/Y/Z axes ensure absolute precision whist drilling and inserting dowels, every time. Featuring a low-pressure double membrane glue pump, the ABD 060 provides consistently high quality results. The double membrane system ensures that the glue is consistently pumped, guaranteeing both perfect and clean dosage levels. INSTALLATION Busellato Easy Jet - The Quickest Way To Fly For Flexfurn! The business that is now Flexfurn began by supplying furniture for the events hire marketplace in and around the company’s home town of Cheltenham. Part of the marketplace the business had developed locally was for folding and stackable tables for use by the men who for years built sections of the M5 Motorway which ran past the company’s Gloucestershire premises. As well as folding tables for the workforce to eat their lunches at, the Flexfurn team supplied everything else they needed on a day to day basis - including waterproof clothing against the sort of weather for which the south-west is famous. Seeking to extend and expand market penetration overseas, Flexfurn had worked closely with a Belgian sales organisation called Europa 2000. Europa had 200,000 sq ft of warehousing and their territories extended into the Americas and across Western Asia; in 2007 the two companies merged and a new business was floated under the Flexfurn Ltd. headingFlexfurn was a 10-man team working out of a 20,000 sq ft manufacturing and showroom space but with only a single beam saw - all that the team had needed up to that point. However, expanding sales in conjunction with Europa 2000 was putting the supply of hire product of sufficiently good quality to meet new standards under

Peter Whiteland is Managing Director and is, by his own admission, not a techincal man; nevertheless, he was tasked with heading off to the industry’s premier manufacturing equipment show with a list of requirements that was shaped by things to do rather than machines to buy. After a day on stands large and small, Peter settled at the stand of RW Machines, which seemed the

David Thompson Rowland added solutions to the problems and also did the sums; together the two men did a deal and agreed dates for delivery and commissioning. RW Machine’s principal Casadei Busellato fullfulled the problem that topped the list for a CNC work centre and a straight line edgebander, respectively the latest Easy Jet CNC from Busellato and a Flexa 37 straight line edgebander by Casadei. For face finishing on table tops RW supplied a heated press with glue coating rollers from Orma Macchine and further edge finishing, this time for shapes, with Eclipse by Vitap. The Easy Jet CNC is the machine that enables nesting for optimisation of raw materials and also carries a broad range of hortizontal and vertical boring options. Easy Jet carries two boring heads and a grooving saw working in the X axis with a 10 position auto-tool changer; it ticked all the boxes ... easy to use, compact and capable. David Thomson Rowland was able to draw up a grid for manufacturing layout that could handle large sheet sizes of materials from Melamine-faced MDF to a range of HPLs on plywood and in sheet sizes up to 5 x 12 and material thicknesses from 12 to 24mm. Peter Whiteland had the work specifications all to hand and David now also had a useable area footprint to work to. It all added up to a financial package of the right equipment available from one supplier and against a single invoice. “When you are trying to meet the needs of a market you’ve already identified,” says Peter Whiteland, “but can’t fulfill for want of the
means to do the work, it’s very refreshing to find someone who knows all about the technology needed to do the job - and also someone who understands its deployment and technical support. I’m a salesman with no notable CAD experience so RW introduced several specialist engineers into the equation to install the machines and then to train me and my team to make best use of them.” “It’s been a steep learning curve”, says Peter, “a lot to take in, but the team has been great and David Thompson Rowland’s people from RW Machines are coming back again to continue the training next month.”

Schattdecor Launches Second Digital VISIONS Collection at the Euroshop 2014 Taking inspiration from the idea that 'success comes from being different', Schattdecor unveiled its second Digital VISIONS collection of some 70 new decor highlights at the Euroshop show in Düsseldorf in February. Taken together with the 80 decors from the first collection, this provides commercial interior decorators and wood panel and laminate industry customers with almost 150 decor ideas to choose from for creation of unique surfaces that meet the highest of expectations in terms of quality and effect. The response to Schattdecor’s showing was enormous, with visitors from the fields of architecture, shopfitting and booth design all eager to learn about the possibilities of high-quality digital printing. ON TEST Testing the Makita 18v Combi Drill Cordless technology has revolutionized drilling for both the DIY market and Tradesmen When I agreed to test Makita’s 18v Combi Drill I will confess to being a little apprehensive as I am not known for my DIY prowess. Fortunately my son Tom is a trainee joiner so I enlisted him to assist with the testing. Our project was to build a pergola adjoining the French windows to a courtyard. This entailed drilling to masonry, brick, concrete paving and, of course, timber. The model duly arrived in Makita’s new ‘MakPAC’ Connector Case – these cases are compatible with other stacking case systems and come in four sizes. They can be locked together, taking up less storage space and making transportation to and from work sites and workshops easier. Having previously used corded drills or cordless drills with limited power and battery life we were delighted with the difference the Makita 18v Combi Drill made to the job in hand. The power of the drill is very impressive and it handles extremely well. It is light and easy to use. The keyless chuck and reverse system saves time and cuts out the frustration and time fiddling with the chuck key to change the drills bits. The project required the use of heavy timber and the Makita 18v Combi Drill was the perfect tool for the job. It comes equipped with two batteries which means there is no down time for the operator and the recharge time of 36 minutes means that precious time is not wasted waiting for the battery to charge. RW Machines is Silent Partner at Acoustafoam “Everyone is a potential customer when you own an Anderson CoJet ink jet printer.” So says Carl Tranter, Production Director at AcoustaFoam. With over 30 years experience manufacturing acoustic insulation for the construction and marine industries, the family-run, Telford-based company has recently invested £500,000 in developing and testing a new, stand-alone product range entitled: AcousticArt. “Three years ago, we had an idea to start creating stylish acoustic foam absorbers that architects could incorporate into places like cinemas and conference halls to reduce noise pollution. While the market is niche, there seemed to be demand for a bespoke design service that could transform a normal foam absorber into a piece of functional art,” explains Carl. Already experienced in manufacturing acoustic foam noise control products for the industrial sector, expanding into architecture seemed a logical next step. He adds: “Working with foam is what we do best. As a manufacturer, we can control the whole operation from product quality to lead times.”
AcoustaFoam has an established onsite reverberation testing facility that generates a full report on the noise absorption characteristics of a range of products and materials. A slick design option now completes the manufacturing cycle at Telford. With its focus predominantly on product quality, AcoustaFoam needed to invest in the right technology with which to make AcousticArt a success. “We looked at several printing solutions with a view to applying customised designs and images onto cloth-covered absorbers,” explains Carl. But, after a demonstration of the Anderson CoJet staged by RW Machine’s engineers, the search for the right machine promptly ended. “There was a real buzz gripping the audience, which comprised customers as well as members of our own staff, once we’d seen what the machine was capable of”, says Carl. Cojet ticked all the boxes. AcoustaFoam needed a machine that could print highquality design onto a range of materials including melamine foam because of its light weight and ‘O’ fire safety rating. ability to handle this material was a must and AcoustaFoam also wanted it to work on large surface areas and a wide spectrum of shapes. Offering a range of absorber sizes up to 2500mm x 1200mm and from 25mm to 100mm thick, Carl Tranter and his team were very impressed that Anderson Cojet could work with even larger workpiece sizes when they needed it to. The specific needs of AcoustaFoam formed the basis of a clear brief for makers Anderson to build a machine that incorporated important features like builtin primers on the machine’s eight print-

heads; two further print head options are also available, plus a 10 x 5 working table and 1440dpi high-speed printing capabilitites. Trade magazine media, like this publication, will have been printed at or below 300dpi using a much coarser screen. Inkjet print heads will overprint images up to eight times to build surface depth and texture while still covering around 20sq metres per hour in normal print mode. Double UV print-head lamps cure inks almost immediately and imitative print images will convince both eye and, where textures are concerned, also touch. “Even with our specific tech-spec
requirements,” says Carl Tranter, “the machine was built and installed within 12 weeks and as soon as it arrived, RW arranged for an Anderson engineer to be flown over to help us with the initial set-up and training.” With news of the CoJet’s impending arrival and the birth of the new AcousticArt range, excitement at the Telford workshop and showroom was mounting. “We had orders ready and waiting before the machine even arrived,” says Carl. “Everyone was so excited - we coulldn’t wait to see what it would be able do once we got our hands on it!”. Machines asked one of the company’s existing and now loyal CoJet customers, Richard Love, to give AcoustaFoam a helping hand with its initial orders. “Once the machine was installed, we hit the ground running,” says Carl, “and already we are manufacturing often upwards of 120 absorber panels a week. We’re confident we will see a return on investment inside three months,” he adds. A new 4,000 sq ft showroom at Telford now houses the CoJet machine and more than 50 of the newest samples and a dedicated new designer has been head hunted and appointed to oversee the project. Carl adds: “We’re already seeing a huge rise in enquiry levels and we’re really excited to see where this terrific machine can take us. We are confident that with RW Machines behind us, AcoustaFoam will be able to make the most sophisticated, design-led noise absorption products on the market.”

PROFILE BIESSE AirForce System. The “Zero-Glue-Line” evolution Have you ever had the opportunity of seeing a panel edgebanded on four sides with a bonded edge, without using glue? The quality can’t be questioned. No argument. It beats any aesthetic standard. The colour continuity between the edge and surface gives a finish more akin to a painted panel than a plastic edge. This kind of appearance has been described as a “zero-glue-line” and should be the goal for

any manufacturer producing kitchen cabinet doors or any visible component for a top quality piece of furniture. The “zero-glue-line” can only be achieved utilizing a special edgebanding tape produced with a co-extrusion of different polymers. This special edge has a functional layer made of Polypropylene (PP 0.2mm thick). This layer is fused to the substrate during the edgebanding process by means of different techniques so the
edge is applied to the panel by interpenetration of the polymer into the panel fibres. PP is today co-extruded and available onto materials such as: PP, PVC, Acrylic, and ABS.

compressed hot air (400-500° C) to perform the melting of the functional layer. Results are excellent! The maximum working speeds are up to 25 m/min using the most common 18 mm panels. The simplicity and the cost of the AirForce System is far lower than Laser systems, it’s maintenance and operating costs are not even comparable. The quality of the panels processed with an AirForce System is even slightly better than that achieved with other systems. Its resistance to water, humidity and peel provide the same standard as that of laser processes. AirForce Systems also have unbeatable advantages in that they can be installed on small to large machines, making the top quality standard of the welded edge accessible to everyone now. It is no longer restricted to large companies with higher capital budgets. AirForce System also has minimal impact on machine mechanics, meaning it can easily co-exist with the glue system (EVA or PUR). A BIESSE edgebander equipped with AirForce can have the capability of using any kind of glue. This represents a significant advantage as we
should consider that over the next few years all machines will be equipped with both systems. Another very important aspect of the new AirForce technology is that coextruded edgebanding tape may become much simpler. The PP functional layer of the Laser edge needs specific “absorber” components in order to react to Laser Light. The absorbers react to a specific wave length (mostly used 980nm wave length frequency) and melts the functional 0.2mm PP. Laser technique is also very sensitive to edge colour. Dark and light colours have a dramatically different reaction to Laser light so the settings need to be properly adjusted. If not, there is a risk of the edge not adhering to the panel, or melting too much that it burns the edge. If you’re using PP coextruded on PVC, an imprecise Laser tune-up may cause unnecessary risks to the environment and people’s health safety. AirForce System is a very promising and will allow any manufacturer to supply top quality furniture to their customers. BIESSE AirForce System is available in two versions: STEP1 and STEP2.

INSTALLATION already had a very good working relationship with G & J having bought machines and servicing from them over a number of years, and as they are now an SCM Distributor, we trusted them to supply a machine to meet all our edge banding requirements." The SCM K260 Evo Edge Bander is a compact machine but fitted with many of the features employed on much larger machines, one of which is the RT-V infeed panel edge trimming group that has two contra-rotating cutterblocks that plane any imperfections from the panel edges and thus provides an excellent surface before edge gluing with hot melt adhesive. This unit is followed by edge banding application of both rollfeed materials, including melamine, PVC and ABS, and strips of laminate and solid wood lippings up to 6mm thickness on panels from 8 to 60mm thickness at a feed speed of 9 metres/minute. The K-2 end trimming unit follows, always giving a perfect cut, with the 2 independent motors sliding on prismatic guideways. The unit provides rapid set-up between straight and angular cutting with the automatic tilting device and it can also radius corners. A top and bottom edge trimming and finishing group, R-K, follows with rapid changeover between straight and radius finishing with pneumatic positioning and fast adjustments with mechanical readouts. For top quality finishing of all applied edges, a glue scraping unit is followed by a

Daltons Wadkin Sign Distributor Agreement with CML Italian Multi Rip Saw manufacturers CML Engineering have signed a distributor agreement with Daltons Wadkin which gives the company exclusive rights to supply their entire range of Multi Rip Saws throughout the UK and Ireland. SAWS Stenner ‘Rocks’ In Northern Ireland Resaw from Daltons Wadkin aids guitar manufacture The music industry seems an unlikely connection with Stenners world renowned Band Resaw range but UK and Ireland distributors Daltons Wadkin recently supplied George Lowden Guitars Ltd in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, with a new ST80 Resaw directly for use in the manufacture of guitars. Francis Dalton commented, “This is probably the most unusual application that we have come across for a Stenner Resaw but the fact is that a machine was required to manufacture super thin hardwood board for the guitar bodies. The Stenner ST80 had its inverter feed modified so that it could feed down to two metres per minute, a flat fence was used and a board width of 3.5 mm achieved.” The ST80 is the smallest of the Stenner stand-alone resaw range but has a build
quality fully comparable to the larger machines. The ST80 has been supplied to timber users throughout the UK and Ireland but never before for the manufacture of guitars! INSTALLATION Pontrilas Sawmills Opt For Salvador Crosscutting solution from Daltons Wadkin Pontrilas Sawmills and Builders Merchants, a family owned business established in 1947 in the Herefordshire village of Pontrilas, are leading suppliers of timber, much of which is locally sourced. The company are involved in logging, transport and machining and are a high profile source of kiln dried timber. Fourth Striebig for Heathrow Export Packers Export packing and case making company Universal Packing Specialists has added a fourth Standard model to its allStriebig stable of vertical panel saws, the oldest of which has been in use for 23 years. The saws size sheet materials including plywood, Tri-Wall high performance corrugated board, foam and polystyrene, used in the production of packing cases. The latest Standard TRK2 model was bought to meet an increase in business and to provide added production flexibility at the specialist company, which operates around the clock on weekdays. It’s the second TRK2 5224 model to go into service with the company, which is based at Colnbrook, close to London’s Heathrow Airport. They work alongside a Standard II machine and an original Striebig Standard bought back in 1991, which is now used solely for cutting sheets of polystyrene needed to line crates when needed. Seven-Up for Lawsons Elcons in multiple for Hertfordshire timber suppliers A star customer for Daltons Wadkin, Lawsons (Whetstone) Ltd have so far purchased seven Elcon Vertical Panel Saws, now installed at six of their home counties branches. The latest purchase was an Elcon 155DS Limpio which incorporates the manufacturer’s patented extraction system removing waste from both in front and behind the material and dramatically reducing the operator’s exposure to hazardous dust to less than 0.5 mg/m . The machine incorporates the usual Elcon high precision steel frame guaranteeing an accuracy of 0.1 mm per metre of cut. The Limpio system is a particularly welcome feature to Lawsons who greatly value the health and safety benefits and improved working environment. Daltons Wadkin are sole UK and Ireland
distributors for the Dutch manufactured Elcon Vertical Saw range and the machine was supplied and installed by Daltons Wadkin engineers at Lawsons Camden depot in October 2013, thus building on the success of the other six Elcons at Whetstone, Colney Heath, Salford and Coulsden. DUST EXTRACTION Ecogate® – Perfect Fit For Utopia Utopia Bathroom Group, the UK’s brand leader in fitted bathroom furniture, has slashed its electricity bills by investing in energy-saving dust extraction technology from Ecogate®. For 25 years, Utopia has been designing and manufacturing high quality bathroom furniture, bathroom suites, and bathroom accessories which are sold through a network of 600 retailers covering the UK and Ireland. Today, the company employs 140 people at its large, modern manufacturing centre in Bilston, West Midlands. Utopia’s managing director, Dave Conn, along with production engineer, Jon Phelps, first saw the Ecogate technology being demonstrated at the W12 exhibition and were soon convinced that retrofitting
the Ecogate system would make significant savings to the running cost of Utopia’s existing dust extraction systems. In May 2013, Ecogate Ltd, together with authorised installer Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS), were called in by Utopia to carry out a thorough energy appraisal and present proposals for retrofitting Ecogate throughout the site. Ian Rayner, sales manager at Ecogate, explains: “Utopia were operating two large-capacity drag chain filters, and a total of eleven main fans; ranging from 11kW to 75kW. And, with production operating on a two-shift pattern, fans were running virtually all day, 7 days a week. We were able to determine the extraction demand for every single machine in the workshop and calculate how each system could be adjusted for volume and duty cycle by optimising with
Ecogate. We put forward an ‘extraction-ondemand’ proposal, demonstrating that annual savings of around 450,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) were achievable – giving a full return on the investment in approximately two years. Furthermore, the installation was backed by a Carbon Trust assessment which meant that it qualified for Green Equipment Finance through Siemens (SFS Ltd).” Utopia commissioned DCS to carry out the work which involved the installation of eleven Ecogate Power MASTER® variable speed drive units, each with integral Ecogate greenBOX® 12+ controllers, and a total of twenty six motorised Ecogate damper gates which automatically open and close as machines come on or off line. And, the DCS installation team installed and commissioned the complete system to schedule, over a two week period, with no interruption to production.”

WOODWASTE Company Avoids Increase In Bills Despite Larger Premises When a Cirencester kitchen business moved to a larger workshop, the staff noticed a staggering increase in heating and waste disposal costs, so started looking for a solution. Bespoke kitchen and cabinet makers, Evie Willow, moved to its new 8000 square foot premises when the increase in orders meant the old unit no longer provided enough room. The staff were delighted with the extra production space at the new place, but the company soon realised it was spending at least £600 a month on oil during the winter to heat the unit and keep the 11 staff warm. There was also an increase in skip costs due to the extra manufacturing activity.
