The Use Wood Wisely Owls Hoot The Word At The Biomass Awards ‘Use Wood Wisely' Owls encourage attendees of the Biomass Awards at London's Gibson Hall to ‘Get Wood Wise'. The event was organised to highlight the campaign to enshrine the hierarchy of wood in law. Currently, 1.8m tonnes of British grown wood is being burnt by power generators every year instead of being used for building materials and furniture making, which ensures the CO2 stays locked in for decades. Campaigners believe wood should only be incinerated at the end of its useful life. For further information: www.usewoodwisely.co.uk

The business operates nationally from modern premises in Nottingham, supplying mainly to the trade, predominately to showrooms, property development companies, holiday home specialists and other supply and installation outlets. As well as standard kitchen cabinets as featured in the company’s on-line brochure, frontline also offers a custom-made service, capable of producing cabinets to any size, height, width and depth and in any combination Utilising the latest CNC machinery and technology, Frontline produces a high quality and varied range of products and has the increased flexibility necessary to meet all its customers various requirements. The company boasts a wealth of experience in the production of custom made units of any size for both kitchens and bedrooms. Frontline bedroom and kitchen cabinets are manufactured to the highest standards and feature 18mm high density MFC and 18mm MFC backs. In addition to standard 2mm PVC edging, for an additional 10 per cent cost Frontline also offers edging to all front edges and internal shelves. With a focus on a zero glue line finish, as

well as all the exposed edges being lipped, this where the company had the need to purchase a suitable edgebander and it was to Fen UK based in Derby that managing director, Ian MacCall turned when the decision was made to purchase a new Paul Ott edgebander. Following comprehensive research into the various models of edge-banders currently on the market, Ian McCall chose the Twister edgebanding machine manufactured by Austrian company, Paul Ott GmbH and distributed in the United Kingdom & Ireland by Fen UK because he wanted to achieve the best possible edgebanding quality. His research has certainly paid off, as Ian now finds that it is possible to achieve his aim of an entirely repeatable zero-glue line finish time after time. Using the Twister, edgebanding materials can be applied with a seamless and professional finish, providing a future-proof high quality solution that can truly be claimed to work 100 per cent of the time. For a professional and consistent finish that is guaranteed to last the Twister edgebander as purchased by Frontline Cabinet Design is ideal for quick processing from coiled material to solid lippings. It is capable of applying edgings ranging from 4mm to 10mm and these can be applied to panel thicknesses up to 60mm.

The Twister is a heavy machine, as the edgebander is designed to cope with high production environments; all the time producing an industry leading finish at 20 m/min, straight off the machine. Standard equipment includes a premilling unit and the patented electronically controlled CombiMelt glue application system. The change-over to different types of edgings is truly fully automatic, ensuring maximum repeatability at the same time. Thanks to the spray finishing stations supplied by LCM, all the finishing work is completed by the machine, without the need of any manual cleaning of panel faces afterwards. Additionally there are diverse solutions available for all manner of possible finish treatments, including the new deep grain decors becoming available. As a manufacturer, Paul Ott GmbH started out in 1963 and began the production of woodworking machinery. Today the company continues to expand in private hands and is owned and managed very successfully by the new generation of the family, ensuring a very high level of technical service to their customers. EVENTS All The Components for a Great Show

As brands such as Salice and Blum reveal plans for their W14 presence, more key exhibitors provide the UK with an important showcase at the NEC this October. You must have seen the striking new W14 image now featuring in adverts for the show. A bold, confident statement, just like the event itself. The picture is of a giant W14 in 3D, being constructed from a vast array of components and materials within the NEC’s cavernous halls. Now we can see that is exactly what is happening on the live floor plan (see for

yourself at www.w14exhibition.com. In previous years the components and materials for joinery and furniture manufacturers have been slowly growing. 2014 represents a positive explosion as the big names in components and materials hold their own with the traditionally huge machinery presence. For example, Salice are the latest major components supplier to take an impressive stand at W14. Walter Gosling of Salice UK commented, “W14 is a cornerstone of our campaign to consolidate our position as the most innovative source of new concepts in furniture hardware and we look forward to the interest that products like Lapis, Titanium and the Eclipse will certainly generate”. Most observers will also note that Blum will be showing to UK manufacturers at W14. Dave Sanders, Sales Director of Blum UK welcomed the opportunity “W14 is

undoubtedly the best and most high profile exhibition for the furniture manufacturing industry and Blum will be there to interact with our front line customers and demonstrating our skills in working with wood and all associated products. We will have our Austrian apprentice colleagues on the stand to show how Blum develops the future for ourselves and our partners in business but also plan to show how Blum UK plans to introduce this element of cooperation into the U.” Other debutants at W14 show their desire to engage with a revitalised audience of UK manufacturers. Kingslide are also significant players on the world component stage and come to W14 for the first time. Their presence promises to be imposing in showcasing their offer to manufacturers. From Spain, W14 welcomes components and lighting suppliers Emuca for the first time. Their comprehensive range is certain

to excite visiting manufacturers. UK based component suppliers are also in good strength with impressive design led companies such as Armac Martin being joined by redoubtable names. Isaac Lord, Crofts and Assinder and the re-branded

Formed are recent additions set to make a lasting impression at W14. BA Components have already planned how they intend to use their prominent stand at W14, quickly picking up on the show’s ‘Make the Difference’ concept. The

theme for BA Components stand at the W14 exhibition in Birmingham this October reflects the ‘family’ of Brands offered by the Company and the benefits associated with being part of the BA Dealer Network. ‘Be a Part of it’ will be the message clearly displayed throughout the stand and on all relevant show marketing materials as BA believe how they ‘make the difference’ is in the range they offer and the complete support package provided to their dealer network. With just about every main supplier of edge bands and a rapidly growing materials, finishes and surfaces content, W14 is indeed built of everything the manufacturer needs. Good to see the industry celebrating the confidence now emanating from UK manufacturing. Here is major show on our doorstep this autumn. Building a Better Business As the UK's national timber event for the built environment, Timber Expo is now firmly established in the industry calendar. The event provides a platform for exhibitors from across the globe to showcase the latest innovations however Timber Expo is now recognised as being more than just a ‘market stall' to promote products and services, it is also a platform for ‘thought leadership' and knowledge transfer. But when other trade exhibitions are in decline, why is Timber Expo expanding year on year? According to Nick Milestone, Managing Director of B & K Structures, who with Austrian partners Binderholz form the XLAM Alliance - it's having a business focus. "It's all about creating a forum to bring the right people together to conduct meaningful business meetings. Once construction companies had the luxury of substantial marketing budgets; however the recession changed all that - now we have to ensure a return on our investment by generating a positive impact to the bottom line."

At the heart of Timber Expo each year, is the Timber Buyers and Specifiers Forum - a purposeful environment for building business networks. This focused approach has proved to be highly successful in creating new business relationships, facilitating meetings and most importantly, generating business. All participants in the Forum have a strong desire to engage at the highest level with decision makers with direct influence over procurement decisions. "We have exhibited every year since the launch of Timber Expo at the Ricoh Arena in September 2011. Last year the Buyers Forum was extremely successful for the X-LAM Alliance," Nick Milestone added. "The new format, with an online profile for all the buyers taking part, included details of live projects and precise requirements. With this system no one wastes their time and booking meetings in advance demonstrates commitment on both sides. Buyers meet with the right exhibitors and can get straight down to business. The Forum generated inroads and openings with companies we would have otherwise not had the opportunity to meet

and do business with." Due to the increase in international visitors and exhibitors, last year Timber Expo moved from the Ricoh Arena to the NEC. 2014 will see another first for the event - now in its fourth year, Timber Expo will be co-locating with W14 - the bi-annual trade exhibition for UK joinery and furniture manufacturers on October 7 and 8 at the NEC, Birmingham. Event Director Loretta Sales commented: "Keeping the content current and informative is crucial. The Timber Focus seminar programme organised by TRADA, is free to attend and focuses on new innovations, iconic case studies and the implications of new regulations. The Toolbox Talks programme offers exhibitors a platform to promote their latest products or services and the Timber Buyers & Specifiers Forum proved to be a great success with exhibitors and 98% of buyers confirming they would like to be contacted to take part in 2014." Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG UK explains, “FRIZ is one of the more specialised brands in the HOMAG Group and is, as a consequence, perhaps less well known. Its range of equipment, however, is first class and like all the brands in the Group, its machinery has become the benchmark in its sector of the market. Over the years, FRIZ has perfected the technology required to apply a wide range of materials such as thermoplastic foils, high gloss foils, papers and veneers. The FRIZ machinery can profile wrap these decorative faces around almost any kind of strip component.

An Alternative to Solid Wood Whilst there is no denying real wood looks superb, there are several reasons why it is not necessarily the best solution for manufacturing, particularly with moulded or profiled items. It is difficult to get consistency with real wood which warps and twists and has splits, knots and blemishes which often lead to high wastage levels. On top of this, there is the scarcity of sustainable supply which has led to the cost of solid wood continuing to escalate. Using alternative substrates, such as MDF, chipboards and even PVCs, can provide a more stable, uniformed and cost effective solution, particularly for pieces such as window and door frames, skirting boards and architraves. The finishes that can be applied to these wood substitutes using profile wrapping machines are so good these days that it makes sense to take advantage of the benefits of quality, cost and efficiency they offer.

To cater for this market, FRIZ has developed a range of throughfeed profile wrapping machines which are configurable for all levels of production. They are easily tailored to match manufacturing specifications and open up a host of cost effective alternatives for companies.

The FRIZ Optimat PUM Range The PUM 310 Profline is an example of a versatile profile wrapping machine which can run at speeds of up to 100m/min. The machine is ideally equipped to handle woodgrain foil wrapping of UPVC window components as well as veneer, foil and paper wrapping of MDF, solid wood, chipboard or derived timber components such as door frames, architraves, skirting boards, picture frames, window boards and dado rails. The 310 Profline can perform 360 degree wrapping and features efficient trimming, milling and cutting units for perfect finishing. There are systems available to reduce setting times when changing profiles and the automatic roll change eliminates the need to stop production when a change in finish material is required.

Aluminium, Metal or Plastic The Optimat PUM 120/30/DK model is designed to continuously wrap plastic (PVC), metal or aluminium profiles, up to 450mm in width, with thermoplastic foils using solvent based primer and PUR hot melt adhesive. Blow-off nozzles clean the profiles prior to primer being applied and short-wave infrared heating warms the profiles to ensure a high-

quality bond is achieved. A special foil in-feed guidance system leads the foil precisely towards the profile and a height adjustable laminating roller assists the smooth application of the foil. To prevent scratch marks, roller guides ensure the gentle guidance of profiles entering the machine. As the profile passes through the machine a control function calculates the desired glue application quantity according to the production speed.

Multifunctional Separating Saw The FRIZ PUS300 separating saw is designed to separate work pieces and has four operating modes available: • Separating cut in the work piece gap • Separating cut in the work piece joint • Front and rear edge trimming • Front and rear edge trimming including cutting to fixed length There are height and cross adjustments for U-shaped profiles or double-sided angle profiles and it is available with a maximum working width of either 250mm or 450mm. The PUS 300 is perfect for interlinking with upstream profile wrapping machines. “The range of equipment for profile wrapping from FRIZ is extensive and opens up new markets for manufacturers looking to gain an advantage on quality, price and service,” concludes Simon Brooks. If you would like to learn more about the advantages of profile wrapping technology, please contact Adele Dixon.

From Two Hours, To Ten Minutes, With Cabinet Vision The largest kitchen manufacturer in Ireland says it could not produce the thousands of panels it does every week, without Cabinet Vision software. While Cherrymore Kitchens & Bedrooms works from a range of standard units, everything is made to order off a plan, mainly for its sister retail company, Rite Price. Operating out of 80,000 square foot manufacturing premises in Donegal, Cherrymore uses Cabinet Vision to be 100 per cent sure that the panels are cut exactly as stipulated on lists of units which come in from Rite Price as an XL file, with a CAD drawing for checking against. Cherrymore co-owner and Head of Production Martin McLaughlin says: “We input that information into Cabinet Vision, which produces the NC code for routing, as well as controlling the loading, boring and labelling on our SCM Accord machine, and optimises our Holzma Beam Saw. As Rite Price invested in a specialist kitchen design software before we installed Cabinet Vision last year, we only use the integrated Screento-Machine module at the moment, to send accurate code to the machines for cutting, boring and labelling the panels. Eventually we’ll use Cabinet Vision as our design package, too, producing photo rendered drawings and cutlists.” Machine operator Jason Gallen is responsible for inputting the lists which comprise the size and style of the relevant Rite Price base, sink and wall units. “We have all those units in our library, starting at 150mm going up to 1,200mm. I manually drag and drop all the parts for the units into the Cabinet Vision file for that job, and once the list’s complete the S2M Center creates toolpaths for all the different parts. Then I optimise it to create the best possible nest, select the SCM or Holzma and run the program.” Amongst the features of the Screen-to-

Optimising the Holzma beam saw

Machine Ultimate module used by Cherrymore: • Control Feeds & Speeds of Tools by Material • Control Maximum Depth Per Pass of Tools by Material • ABC Axis Rotation • Square Up and Manage Nest Off-Fall (with Nesting) • Define Multiple Sheet Sizes per Material “When the SCM arrived, before we installed Cabinet Vision onto it, I used to manually put every single part on, and some units have ten parts. It took at least two hours – but it only takes ten minutes with Cabinet Vision. It’s completely revolutionised my job, and we couldn’t produce the number of kitchens we do, without it.” He says occasionally a component is called for that is off-standard. “As Cabinet Vision is parametric, it’s so easy to manipulate an existing panel. If I expand or

shrink one aspect, it automatically moves everything else, so I don’t have to worry about handle and hinge holes being in the wrong place.” A point echoed by Martin McLaughlin. “It’s so flexible. A parametric program is vital for the type of business we’re in. It speeds up production and eliminates human error, both of which are extremely important to us.” As well as driving the two machines, he makes full use of Cabinet Vision’s facility to produce a list of sheets prior to starting machining. “It means we can prepare our sheets of two-sided laminate chipboard or MDF on a stack for either machine. Each unit is manufactured from a dense 18mm board, which, when coupled with glued and dowelled joints, makes for one of the strongest carcases available.” And the labelling capability ensures that every panel is clearly identified with the part number, customer’s details, colour and size.

He says the fact that Cabinet Vision’s support team spent time setting everything up accurately is paying dividends now. “You can have the best software in the world, but it’s nothing without the right support. In particular Cabinet Vision undertook a lot of work in optimising the Holzma and setting

up the labelling system. Everything works perfectly, and is well worth the effort put in when we first installed it. “We’re 100 per cent confident that Cabinet Vision will produce the panels exactly as they are detailed on the unit list produced in the specialist design software

by Rite Price’s showroom staff.” Cherrymore’s manufacturing operation has been established for around 12 years, producing a wide range of traditional and contemporary styles at competitive prices; from modern flat and slab doors, to the classic shaker and solid timbers. Cherrymore also has a number of unique features such as hexagonal and curved doors.

INSTALLATION

Striebig Makes an Art of Packing Case Production Specialist fine art forwarder Williams & Hill has bought two Striebig Compact vertical panel saws for its newly-opened warehouse near London’s Heathrow airport. The saws cut a variety of sheet materials, including plywood, OSB and Tri-Wall high performance corrugated board, needed for the construction of bespoke packing cases, plus foam and polystyrene used to line the interiors if required. They join a Striebig Econom II model which was purchased shortly after the business was formed in 2002. Said the company’s warehouse manager Martin Edwards: “The original Striebig has done a terrific job and is a great piece of equipment. “Before we recently opened our fourth warehouse, needed to cope with an increase in business, I did look at some other makes of saws. The fact that we have had no problems with the Striebig in 11 years, coupled with the excellent service we get from the supplier, prompted us to buy two more.” The entry-level Compact model was chosen as best for the job because every packing case that is made needs to be a different size, with numerous repeat cuts unnecessary.

The two new Striebig Compact vertical panel saws at Williams & Hill.

The two new Compacts are a model 5220, with a cutting range of 4600 x 2200 x 60mm, and a larger model 6220, cutting 5350 x 2200 x 60mm All Compact series models combine exemplary ergonomics and high-quality visual appearance with unmatched

functionality. They feature central support and small parts support over the entire length of the saw, making the cutting of small work pieces very easy. They are suitable for cutting practically all sheet materials, including MDF, plaster board, plastics and aluminium panels. A scoring saw is available as an option to prevent laminate panel edges from tearing out. Each of the nine models in the Compact series is now available in an AV version incorporating an automatic cut cycle facility to make them even more productive. This feature was previously only found on Striebig’s more expensive models. Striebig saws are available from exclusive UK agent, T.M. Machinery Sales Ltd of Leicester. Williams & Hill is firmly established as a leading UK specialist transporter of fine art, antiques, design furniture and decorative objects. As well as its four warehouses at Heathrow, it has a warehouse in New York City. For further information: Tel: 0116 271 7155 Email: sales@tmservices.co.uk www.tmmachinery.co.uk

BOARDS & PANELS

FINSA – Solutions In Wood from One Source Wood-based boards, panels and composite materials become ever more complex and designed for specific purpose. At the vanguard of nearly all of these developments is the multi-national Spanish FINSA Group with factories around Europe. FINSA’s marketing slogan is “Solutions in Wood” and is certainly no idle boast. No matter what or how specialised the requirement FINSA can supply the solution providing product. It is a single source option for any wood-based product and the well established UK sales and service subsidiary ensures this market has full access to all these benefits. An overview of the FINSA product portfolio reveals board products ranging from standard chipboard and MDF options as well as a complete spectrum of lightweight solutions, fire retardant and moisture resistant products and specialist alternatives to solid laminate and structural specific requirements. A very important part of this product range is the unique Superpan board which FINSA has developed and patented. FINSA products are designed to meet international and national standards and certification stipulations and the company is underpinned by a high profile environmental responsibility at all levels. Product quality is ensured and maintained by total in-house production control (even to the extent of manufacturing their own adhesives) and FINSA supplement core substrate products with a full range of melamine, veneer and other décor developments at the cutting edge of fashion. All FINSA products are backed up with a full range of technical specifications and literature and in the UK by highly trained technical staff. Panel & Joinery Production takes a closer look at some of these products which are increasingly used and asked for by the UK market and available from FINSA UK from

backdrops to decorative situations that exemplify accent features and heighten visual and aesthetic effect.

Compacmel for solid laminate FINSA have developed their specialist Compacmel board as a cost effective alternative for solid grade laminate. It is a very high grade, high density fibreboard (HDF) bonded with moisture resistant synthetic resins. FINSA say that for general use solid grade laminate – around 70% of applications – Compacmel is a fully viable alternative in all respects at between 35% and 40% lower cost. (This will have major implications for any tendering or quotation process).

Applications include public area toilet cubicles, locker room furniture, hotel and leisure area furniture and paneling, wall cladding and worksurfaces. Compacmel’s performance characteristics are high density (more than 1000kg per cubic metre) as well as tensile strength, bending strength, elasticity and high impact resistance. It is well suited to environments of persistent high humidity.

Fibracolour – where black must be black Many progressive furniture installations and interior designs call for dark or black

FINSA’s Fibracolour Black MDF is the only product on the market that is truly black and not merely very dark shades of grey due to innovative technical properties. It will easily accept lacquer, waxes and transparent varnishes for aesthetic originality and can also be coated with natural veneer or melamine. Fibracolur is made with non-toxic, waterbased pigments and has a low formaldehyde concentration (E1 classification). It therefore guarantees a perfect and safe interaction with the environment and is an ideal solution for enclosed spaces. Stability, consistency and intensity of colour is guaranteed in compliance with the most demanding quality standards. So colouring is perfectly uniform and resistant to natural and artificial light…also surface damage can be easily remedied. Fibracolur is available with FSC or PEFC certification.

Fire Retardant (FR) requirements The requirement in legislation for FR building products continues to extend – particularly in the light of not only saved damage costs but also lives and the associated litigation. Paradoxically, in terms of general understanding, wood is considered to have

good fire behavior in a fire at the full development stage. Flame retardant wood panels even when in direct contact with flames for more than 20 minutes do not end up combusting. The FINSA range of FR woodbased products is the most comprehensive available in the UK, comprising raw particle board Fimapan, structural panels Superpan TECH, MDF boards Fimaplast and Fibraplast, lightweight Greenpanel (a unique product that combines strength, lightweight and FR properties in one

creating a high performance particle board product that is the substrate and platform for various specialist functions. It consists essentially of a chipboard core with MDF fibre-like outside surfaces pressed and processed in a continuous process. The superior outer surfaces give an excellent platform to carry final faces like veneer, melamine, foils, lacquers and paints. Superpan is obviously available in fire retardant FR grades, moisture resistant and even special structural (Superpan TECH) grades. It has extremely good machining characteristics and the nature of its structure gives it superior bending and other strengths. The most recent incarnation of Superpan has created enormous interest across the entire furniture manufacturing and specifying sectors – Superpan STAR This is a collaboration between FINSA and chemical giant BASF which uses a polymer called KauritLight to substitute part of the chipboard core which results in an even stronger product with a 30% - 40% weight saving.

FINlight is a light panel with thin MDF faces and a 300kg per cubic metre core. It machines like any conventional panel and can be postformed. Greenpanel is a revolutionary board made from thin MDF faces and a core of 3mm Fibranor MDF strips arrayed in a grid system to form a strong, flexible core. It will cut and edge like any board product and its weight ranges from 74 to 250kg per cubic metre depending on board thickness. Iberpan 400 is a very low density MDF of approximately 400kg per cubic metre and Fibrapan Ultralight is a low density MDF weighing around 30% less than conventional MDF. All of these lightweight products have a range of high performance characteristics and dimensional availability.

Superpan – the FINSA “super” board Superpan is an amazingly versatile solution in wood developed by and exclusive to FINSA. It is a board product that ticks a huge range of boxes in the demand lists of furniture manufacturers, architects and specifiers. Superpan is a FINSA patented process of

Kronospan Gives Bury FC the Smartest Changing Room In League Two Bury FC’s players have the best home comforts in League Two after Kronospan stepped up to sponsor The JD Stadium’s home dressing room. Hoping to play a part in Bury FC’s excellent recent home form, Kronospan worked alongside the football club to renovate the player’s changing room and give them a professional environment to prepare for matches. David Flitcroft, Bury FC first-team manager, said: “The new home changing room is outstanding. It’s a statement of intent from the chairman about where the club is going. It’ll give the players a professional edge and shows them that we’ll do everything we can to support them; because if you treat players like champions, eventually they will become champions.” The changing room was renovated over a three-day period. Kronospan supplied the panel board surfaces Santana Oak (6602 HE) and Graphite Grey (0162 PE), and Hill’s Panel Products (HPP), based in Oldham, cut and edged the board to be fitted in the changing room. Egger Launches New Zoom Collection Europe’s leading wood-based panel manufacturer, EGGER, is extending its market leading ZOOM Collection with the next generation in decors and textures. May 2014 will see EGGER launch 23 new decors and six completely new textures in the ZOOM laminate and melamine board range. The latest update of decors includes synchronised pore surfaces where grain and texture are aligned - authentic and striking wood reproductions as well as soft-matt finishes and an industrial style ceramic look. Nick McClughin, EGGER UK head of marketing, explains: “The new additions to ZOOM do far more than complement the existing collection, they are truly evolutionary. “When we presented our new wood developments to experienced design professionals as part of our NPD process they had difficulty telling them apart from a solid wood and veneer. “This reaffirmed our belief that we have created a suite of products that not only look and feel like the real thing but offer important performance benefits that are so important across the lifespan of the installation.”

Synchronised Pore With Character EGGER’s new synchronised pore surfaces, on both sides of the board, tie the decor and the surface texture together perfectly to create a look and feel incredibly close to solid wood and veneer. They have the added advantages of colour consistency over the lifetime of the furniture as well as being hard-wearing and low maintenance. All three new synchronised pore textures in the ZOOM 2014 update have a unique character and have been developed to offer a different tonality and feel from subtle and elegant to more rustic. The Feelwood Elegance ST27 texture exudes a modern and sophisticated feel whilst demonstrating the beauty and subtleness of nature. The fine and linear, yet natural, texture is synchronised with the grain of a chestnut reproduction called Tortona to create an incredibly realistic finish. It is perfect for creating a high value, elegant look. The Feelwood Nature ST28 texture on the other hand brings you closer to nature. Knots and planking create a natural feel and produce an incredibly realistic appearance. The matt texture which

is paired with the grain of ‘Gladstone Oak’ emphasises the sandblasted character of this decor. The Feelwood Ambiance ST29 texture has a striking, yet elegant appearance. With its large grain pattern it is ideal for large applications to create a tasteful, sophisticated feel. Soft recesses trace the grain to create a tactile effect and the matt-gloss finish all add to provide an air of grandeur.

Expressive Textures Four further surfaces have been developed which open up four quite different design routes. The Painted Wood ST26 texture builds a bridge between natural and contemporary design. The surface is based on pine with an opaque coating and is ideally suited to neutral uni colours such as a mid grey or white. The interplay of liner and pronounced sections gives the surface a very natural look. The Brushed Wood ST36 texture has an irregular and very deep texture, combined with a matt appearance very similar to the deeply brushed solid wood furniture that is gaining popularity. Six new decors using this texture have been developed which can be used to create an incredibly natural, authentic and premium finish. The Ceramic ST87 texture explores a new direction combining concrete and ceramic. The texture can create a contemporary, used look with a striking and industrial feel. A new material genre is

created by combining the rusty, aged look with the ceramic texture. The matt-gloss effects simulate the surface and feel of a ceramic plate helping to create a visual depth. The Perfect Matt ST9 texture creates a modern, yet calming atmosphere. The tactile, matt finish has a low reflection and is well suited to warm, trendy uni colours. The surface is soft, warm and pleasant to the touch. For designers, the ZOOM Collection not only means product quality, decor expertise and the reassurance of in-depth national availability – it means a comprehensive service package.

New Visualisation Tool EGGER has developed a new way of being able to visualise how colours will look as part of a room. Using high definition scans designers can quickly create colour combinations in room settings ranging from shops, hotels and restaurants to kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms. Already available for PCs, EGGER has developed a free new app for tablets and phones. Simply type VDS App on your device and download for free from iTunes or Google Play.

David Clouting Dares To Be Different Identifying the latest fashionable trends in KBB furniture is a topic in which David Clouting Ltd has developed a high level of expertise, further emphasised by the introduction of its latest high gloss additions to its Decofoil range. Ignored by many when it first emerged over 10 years ago, others claimed high gloss was a passing fad that would not last. David Clouting, however, has continued to develop its selection of high gloss designs, allowing customers to remain at the forefront of KBB furniture design. Its latest introductions are Light Grey Gloss KADR4-PG, Cashmere YEM18-PG, Stone Grey NCAB5-PG Stone Grey and Dakar NCAB3-PG. These will provide designers with further essential options to

match the demands of consumer demand for high gloss finishes. All four designs have proven their popularity in the market in matt PVC and MFC finishes, so their transition to high gloss will further extend their appeal. Their introduction is further proof that high gloss has considerable potential to serve the market for many years to come. Light Grey Gloss works well with Pfleiderer U1188 HG and Egger U708 St 15, providing a lightness of tone to suit commercial furniture design and reflect the optimism and confidence of more positive economic times predicted for the years ahead. The remaining three choices of Cashmere, Stone Grey and Dakar have all proven popular as solid colours, initially

originated by Egger. These high gloss versions are an attractive but logical extension of the Decofoil Innoface matt versions. The most recent of these is Cashmere, which has quickly been adopted by leading furniture manufacturers. The gloss effect further enhances its subtle, soft warm tone and emphasises its joyful effect. David Clouting has established itself as the leading provider of stocked gloss foil finishes and the latest additions to its Decofoil High Gloss range provides yet more confirmation of its status.

INSTALLATION Schelling Helps Noberne Open New Doors For Schelling performance and quality are not a question of money. Introducing the Schelling fh3 cut-tosize saw: economically priced, high quality yet compact. Noberne Doors Ltd, based in Leeds, West Yorkshire was founded nearly 40 years ago as a manufacturer of timber doors, and is one of Britain’s premier brands, supplying bespoke, high performance fire doors, acoustic doors, external thermal rated doors, bullet resistant doors and X-ray doors. Near the top of Noberne Door’s wish list was the desire to purchase a compact saw requiring minimal floor space without a loss in build quality, capacity and travel speed. Schelling who continue to evolve as a total solution provider and to develop its product range to match customer needs have satisfied Noberne’s wishes by combining high technology in a compact size. The fh3 cut-to-size saw is an ideal cutting machine for smaller sized companies. Schelling now offers a more affordable solution, which is compact so if your workshop space is limited then this is an ideal solution, saving you space and money. Trevor Watson, Production Manager from Noberne Doors, explained, “against a

32 Panel & Joinery Production MAY/JUNE 2014

background of limited factory space it was important to choose a saw that was compact, yet able to achieve our production targets, without compromise, and since its installation the fh3 has delivered on all counts.” Due to the working shift patterns at Noberne Doors it is important to get as much cutting as possible completed during a shift. The fh3 has the advantage of an automatic short stroke pressure beam which only lifts and lowers as far as the actual book height requires, leading to faster cycle times when cutting material. Combined with this option is the automatic feature, which detects the material book height and adjusts the saw height projection to the optimal cutting height. For Noberne both these machine feature have produced increased production output. To be successful in the board industry, responding swiftly to specific customer demands (such as varying sizes, widths or finishes) is a matter of increasing importance. The fh3 processes a wide variety of timber materials using a powerful 14Kw motor, which has the capacity for both small batch production and fast throughput of larger orders. In addition to standard machine features,

the Schelling fh3 is able to offer a range of options that can be added to suit individual requirements such as grooving, window cutting and an angle cut option. A standard feature on the fh3 is the viewing window in the pressure beam cover which offers the operator good visibility when cutting. Another option of particular interest to Noberne Doors is the format device that allows for cutting material with surface overhang around the panel. The formatting device guarantees precise machining of projecting surface veneers. As you would expect from the fh3 saw it is characterised – as are all Schelling machines – by its precision and cutting performance. Schelling now offers a model that delivers the performance expected from a Schelling but at a lower cost and as you would expect from a new Schelling the fh3’s retains the brands customary simple and elegant aesthetics. INSTALLATION The Saw Centre Install SCM CNC at Malcolm Allan Housebuilders SCM's Scotland distributors, The Saw Centre, based in Glasgow, have recently installed an SCM Tech Z2-27C CNC Machining Centre at Malcolm Allan Housebuilders based in Kintore, Aberdeenshire. Malcolm Allan Housebuilders Ltd. is a family owned and controlled business based in Aberdeenshire. Over the years it has built up a reputation as a high quality housebuilder in the North East of Scotland. The company has been recognised nationally in the NHBC Pride in the Job awards, winning the UK supreme award four times, the Scottish award six times and numerous Seal of Excellence and Quality awards. Other awards gathered along the years include Daily Express Housebuilder of the year award and Aberdeen Civic Society awards. Therefore, last year in an effort to maintain and possibly improve quality levels, Malcolm Allan's Director, Bruce Allan, decided to look at the possibility of installing a CNC Machining Centre to manufacture their own joinery including

The Tech Z2 is ideal for the production of customised furniture, panel machining and it can also be equipped with devices suitable for solid wood machining for the joinery market. It has a vectorial positioning speed of 83 metres/min. (X - Y axes). High performance is due to the latest "Photobumpers" safety protections (a patented solution), avoiding light cells or floor mats. Also, to save valuable floor space, the electrical cabinet and pneumatics are installed within the machine base. Customisation and flexibility due to the wide choice of equipment pre-settings, with the high performance worktable with bars and vacuum pods and the "PENTA" function. The work table consists of 6 - 1300mm TV aluminium bars with pneumatic locking after positioning along the table. Various suction cups are located along the bars to hold the components to be machined with alignment against 2 rows of pneumatic stops. Four pneumatic loading assistance devices help the operator to position components on the table especially if they are of large dimensions. The mechanical fixing of the vacuum cups provides the certainty and guarantee of quality results by utilising a powerful mechanical grip that locks into position the vacuum cups instead of the widespread

vacuum system. It is unrivalled when working in heavy duty conditions and unique in being free from dust (an SCM patent). The machine's cantilever structure is unique and very easy to use. It is the only structure that allows the loading of components along the “Y axis far larger than the standard working capacity of the machine which is 2700 x 1300mm. A powerful 11KW electrospindle running up to 24000 RPM enables the Tech Z2 to machine heavy duty materials and timber without any problems. The electrospindle is fitted with a Vector Axis with Penta Digital Control which provides automatic rotation at 360 degrees in the X- Y directions when Angular Heads are fitted. Tooling is supplied to the electrospindle by either an R8 Rapid Tool Changer with 8 tooling positions or a TR10 automatic tool changer with a capacity of 10 tools or machining heads and is located at the end of the machines table. An F18 boring head with inverter and with 12 vertical and 6 horizontal independent spindles and including an integrated sawblade for grooving completes the high specification. Programming of the Tech Z2 using SCM's Group's "Xilog Maestro" with the advantage of having simple and intuitive

INSTALLATION BRANDT Ambition Edgebander Sets the Standard for Wignall’s Wignall’s has been delivering innovative interiors and bespoke laminated joinery to contractors, designers and architects across the country since 1998. The company, located in the West Country, is based on creating work to the highest standard, delivering it on time and at the right price. With a panel based business such as Wignall’s, the edgebanding capability is a vitally important element in the production process. Consequently, getting the right equipment can make a tremendous difference to profit and performance levels within the operation. A top quality edgebander will save thousands of pounds, reducing waste, improving quality and freeing up labour to work elsewhere. “We were running an eight year old edgebander which was pretty much worn out,” explains Ray Wignall a director of Wignall’s. He continues, “With business expanding and the success of our recent Kitchen and Bathroom Warehouse operation selling direct to the public, we wanted to upgrade our edging facility.”

A reliable high quality product “When we evaluated the options, including several larger second hand machines, it soon became clear that there were only a couple of companies that could offer anywhere near the right solution. Naturally, BRANDT and HOMAG were on our shortlist so we arranged to visit the Castle Donington

showroom to see their edgebanders in action. “The HOMAG UK salesman who looked after us, Andy Potter, was brilliant. He was

extremely professional and listened carefully as to the performance we were looking for from an edgebander. Once he was clear as to our needs, Andy recommended the BRANDT Ambition 1230FC as the ideal solution. “Seeing the machine in action at HOMAG UK, we were impressed not only with its performance, but the quality of the product the machine produced. Recognising the step change the Ambition would bring to our manufacturing process, we made our decision to invest in the BRANDT machine.

Top-notch German efficiency “As you would expect from the world’s leading woodworking machinery brand, the installation process went like clockwork. The BRANDT was delivered on the Monday and was fully operational by Tuesday evening. Our machinist had a day’s onsite training and was then able to get the best out of the machine from the off. “Since we’ve had the Ambition we’ve experienced huge business gains. With the old edgebander we had high waste levels and downtime. Now, the BRANDT turns out panels with first class edging each and every time. You just turn it on and away it goes. We could run it 24 hours a day and it would consistently deliver excellent results. That level of performance and reliability is priceless, it gives you real peace of mind. “The Ambition 1230 FC is more efficient, cheaper to run, delivers better

results and has virtually eliminated waste. It is simply better in every way and we expect it to pay for itself well within the three year return-on-investment we estimated when we bought the machine.”

First class partnership “Throughout the buying process HOMAG UK were very friendly and professional; our relationship with them has continued to flourish long after the sale. They have done everything they said they would do and are always on the end of the phone if we need advice or support. “I would have no hesitation in recommending the BRANDT Ambition 1230FC edgebander and would have absolutely no qualms at all about suggesting a chat with HOMAG UK because they will tell you straight what machine you need to achieve your goals. There’ll be no flannel and no hard sell, just good honest advice,” concludes Ray. Many of the BRANDT and HOMAG edgebander are on show at the company’s Castle Donington showroom, near Derby. If you would like to see a demonstration of any of the models or HOMAG software, call Adele Dixon to arrange a suitable date.

TESTIMONIAL Decorative Panels Group Chooses Biesse Machines for New Factory The Decorative Panels Group continually invests in infrastructure, technology and people. With the recent addition of a new £10 million components production facility, the group has over 575,000ft2 of productive space. In relation to the new facility, Group Operations Director Phil Dalton explains “We had reached the maximum capacity of our two existing Components sites in Huddersfield. We had taken the decision to move all of our production to one central facility in Elland, where the factory could be laid out in the ideal format to maximise efficiencies. As part of the move, we took the decision to invest in new equipment to further enhance our capacity, improve quality standards and create a truly competitive facility aimed squarely at the high volume sector. The additional benefit of purchasing key new machines was that it allowed us to install them at the new site whilst production was still running at 100% on our existing machines, ensuring absolute continuity of supply for our customers.” As part of any new installation, DP look at ways in which they can maximise the efficiency of their labour force. “We utilise feeders and stackers extensively within Decorative Panels and as part of our Components Division installation, we made use of many RBO automatic loading and unloading systems. We see this as vital, not

40 Panel & Joinery Production MAY/JUNE 2014

only to ensure volumes but also to reduce the handling within the factory. The resulting benefit has been a 20% increase in efficiency as well as improved health and safety.” Did Decorative Panels experience a reduction in production cycles? “Although the product we produce is manufactured in relatively high volumes, we still have many SKUs. Each machine will have numerous set-ups per shift and because of this, we pay particular attention to automatic controls to reduce the downtime between panel types and also reduce the potential for human error during the set-up procedure.” In terms of improvements in material efficiencies, Decorative Panels have always

seen this as a critical factor in all of their machining processes and have made good use of optimisation software for many years. Where they have searched for further improvements is through the increased use of servo tape control to eliminate tails on the edgebanding process. “We edge millions of panels per year and saving a few mm on tape adds up to a lot of money and we estimate our new machines have saved us tens of thousands of pounds per year just on edging tape, due to the Biesse edge control systems that reduce tail lengths to just +/- 3.0mm.” Floor space is an expensive commodity these days so did Decorative Panels manage to make any efficiencies in this area? “A major part of our project at Components was to design a floor plan to maximise the space available (175,000 ft ). Potential machine suppliers played a part in this role as many options were offered. Although the site is large the quantity of machines quickly ate up the space. Biesse provided us with a solution that worked. To actually answer the question the project was aimed at significantly increasing our capability and so is based on a much larger floor space, however the output per ft is now significantly more.” Investments of this magnitude must also have a massive impact on your markets and the customers you serve. “Our service has always been excellent and our customers certainly enjoy an improved service as a result of our new facility. The new machines not only produce higher quality panels but

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

TESTIMONIAL

are also laid out in such a way that we no longer have a single point of failure. We have designed in dual redundancy so that if one machine has an unexpected downtime period, products can be re-routed through alternative lines, ensuring continuity of supply for our customers.” “Our strategy is for growth and we have significantly improved our market position since our new machines were installed. We see our factory as a key selling tool where visitors cannot help but be impressed.” “The installation was backed up by significant increase in marketing activity to ensure the industry was fully aware of our new investment. This has of course helped to increase market penetration as we have managed to attract new customers as a result of our new facility.” Part of Decorative Panels’ objective was also to make significant improvements to safe working practices. “As part of our factory layout the objective was to improve Health and Safety. A reduction in materials handling was sought, reduced material movements from machine to machine, better organisation of raw materials, plus the latest CE standards on new equipment.” The RBO automatic loading and unloading systems helped massively with this and Decorative Panels also experienced a significant increase in both quality and output now they’ve eliminated the manual feeding and stacking element. Their skilled operators can then spend further time running the machines. Maintaining the employee satisfaction theme Phil continued, “Our factory is certainly a more pleasant place to work for a number of reasons. We highly value our operators and believe that longevity of service is vital to the competitiveness of the business. New machines, new factory, new

extraction system, lighting and heating all add up to a great working environment for all of us.” The evolution of the project included many consultation meetings to evaluate various factory layouts and mutual ideas and Biesse’s experienced commercial and technical team played a major role in the design and specification. This was primarily through the use of factory layouts, route of product, production figures, and machine capabilities through timings and simulations. Before the machines were delivered and installed at Decorative Panels the ‘lines’ were fully assembled and set-up in Biesse’s factory in Italy where full operational and performance testing was carried out prior to sign off by Decorative Panels. “Testing and sign-off prior to the installation of key high volume production equipment is seen as vital to ensure all equipment is correct on the date of install,” continued Phil, “in fact some of our key operators went to Italy for training which was of great benefit as they were engaged in the procurement and acceptance process”. In summary, why did Decorative Panels choose Biesse? “Biesse’s Total Care was of course an influencing factor and we know the machines are going to be serviced and repaired within the scheme.” “We have had many Biesse machines over the years and have been extremely happy with their performance and reliability. The level of technical assistance provided during the specification and design process ensures we are fully satisfied with our decisions prior to purchase.” “We would certainly recommend Biesse. The machines produce excellent quality panels at speeds suited to high volume, 24

hour operations. The breadth of machines available, coupled with the knowledge of Biesse staff, ensures that an ideal solution can be realised for almost any application within our sector.” Did we demonstrate our core values of Trust, Can do, Communication, Competence and Co-operation? “Yes, the Biesse team work very closely with our staff at all levels. We have an excellent relationship where trust plays a major part.” Biesse machines at Decorative Panels: Drilling: • 2 x Biesse Skipper 100 through feed point to point borers • 1 x Biesse Insider with auto panel return through feed point to point borer • 1 x Bre.Ma GLD through feed point to point borer • 4 x Biesse Techno through feed borer Edgebanding: • 1 x Biesse Stream SB1 single sided edgebander • 2 x Biesse Stream SB2 first/second pass double sided edgebander • 1 x Biesse Stream SB1 first pass double sided edgebander • 1 x Biesse Single 89 shaped edgebanding machines Sawing: • 1 x Selco WNA 600 SynchroLogic angle plant • 1 x Selco WNT 750 rip line saw • 2 x WNTR automatic cross-cut saws Handling: • 1 x RBO Winner feeder and stacker for SB1 • 1 x RBO Winner feeder and stacker for SB2 • 1 x Advantage feeder for Techno • 2 x RBO feeder with auto panel turner for third party double sided edgebanders • 2 x RBO Winner automatic loader for Selco WNTR • 1 x RBO Lifter for automatic unloading of WNT750 rip line

WHAT’S NEW

Ticking the Box For any business owner, time is money but D&G Kitchens believes that Unilin’s revolutionary tool-less kitchen cabinet, ClicBox, could be the answer kitchen fitters have been waiting for. “It takes me longer to get it out of the box than it does for me to put it together,” explains Steve Borrett, owner of GreatYarmouth-based D&G Kitchens, when asked how easy Unilin’s ClicBox is to use. “I’ve never come across a product like it. It’s so quick and easy to assemble, anyone could do it.” It’s not every day you hear a skilled kitchen fitter with more than 25 years experience in the trade tell you how simple part of his job is but then again, it’s not every day you are confronted with the ease and simplicity of a Unilin ClicBox. As you walk around D&G Kitchens’ 55 sq mt showroom, it’s clear to see that the independent kitchen retailer and fitter knows a thing or two about kitchen manufacturing. He’s in demand. So much so, his diary is full for the next five months and, relying solely on word of mouth, he has won orders for more than 20 kitchens and 10 bedrooms in the last 12 months. But, for someone who works predominantly single-handedly on all his projects, where does he find the time?

“In this line of work, time is a valuable commodity. I have no time for gimmicks,” admits Steve. “I like to do a job well. I openly tell people that I don’t make cheap kitchens, I make good-quality kitchens, so I’m sure it’ll come as no surprise when I say I always err on the side of caution when it comes to working with new products.” With the housing market on the move again, Steve didn’t want to turn work away but he desperately needed to find a way of saving time so he could capitalise on the upturn in enquiries. “I’d been manufacturing my own kitchen carcases for over 15 years,” he explains. “It was labour intensive but with nothing on the market that could rival the quality and effectiveness of my own carcases, I had no choice but to continue making them myself.” After seeing a demonstration of Unilin’s ClicBox at the end of last year during the May Design Series, Steve couldn’t resist giving it a go himself and in under a minute, he had created his very first ClicBox. “I was seriously impressed,” he recalls. “Not only was it quick to assemble, it was just as sturdy as my madeto-order carcases and offered my customers choice and flexibility in their designs.” ClicBox also ticked the box when it came to quality. “I was surprised how much thought had gone into the design of this product,” he adds. “Even the wall units had been made 30mm wider than a standard base unit allowing for a full-size dinner plate to be stored easily. It’s this type of thing that gives me an edge over the competition.” Steve’s also impressed with the flexibility ClicBox gives him. Proud to offer design without limits, he needed a carcase that reflected the limitless possibilities his customers expected. The smart drilling

The CLICBOX kitchen display

pattern, which has been designed to match a range of fitting suppliers, means he can still offer four or five drawers and drawer liners can be added without the need to drill extra holes, providing customers with complete control over their kitchen. And, with help from Unilin’s UK distributor HPP, Steve can order from a range of fortytwo cabinet sizes and formats in any colour for next day deliver. Now Steve has time on his side, he’s busy creating a new showroom that includes a ClicBox kitchen display. Without the need to manufacture carcases himself, he’s also had the time to explore new opportunities and opened a new market with a local housing developer. He readily confirms what Unilin, the makers of ClicBox, have been saying for a while: “Thanks to ClixBox, I’m able to spend more time fitting kitchens and less time creating carcases.” And that’s what it’s all about isn’t it?

WOODWASTE Noise and Size - Big Issues for Dustraction at Handwork Kitchens Paul Manchett reckons he’s going to double sales at Handcraft Manufacturing in the next 6 months and is installing new production machinery and wood waste technology accordingly. The latter has been a challenge because he needs all the floor space he can get; there is only a narrow footprint to the rear of his new Wellingborough factory - and that is completely inaccessible to vehicles for the installation of filter, fans and ducting and also for an inclined elevator and silo to feed a new wood waste boiler. Steve Matuska at Dustraction was obliged to drop his new extraction equipment in by crane from the far side of the new factory and to take all the ducting in through the gable end, where the filter and transfer fans leave only inches to spare! Handcraft supplies kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and office furniture either as customer-bespoke cabinetry for end users, with a wide range of fittings and accessories, or as quality carcasing for sole traders, retailers and dealers in the construction industry. Founder and company director Paul Manchett says that Handcraft uses only high quality 18mm MFC in a wide variety of colours, grains and finishes - a far bigger selection, he adds, than is available from competitive sources. Output is currently running at a minimum of 1,200 cabinets a week generating five to eight tons of waste that

was previously bagged for disposal to land-fill. Paul chose a Dustrax 30 RV Series tubular filtering system from Dustraction, complete with three automatic shaker cleaning mechanisms serving 160 filter tubes and a return air system to bring the manufacturing air quality and temperature inside the new factory to optimal seasonal levels. He has been turning work away recently, he says, for want of a better manufacturing set-up and is now planning to double his output over the course of the next six months - and all without increase to his workforce! “Because we are a bespoke manufacturer,” says Paul, “we have the flexibility to produce our carcases to any size, with thickness

A very limited footprint behind the new factory of Handcraft Manufacturing has been filled by Dustraction with a No. 30 RV Filter on a steel gantry to raise airseal outlets clear for discharge to an elevated conveyor. options of 0.4mm or 2mm and with PVC or ABS edge finishings. All of my factory waste now goes up the chimney; disposal of flammable waste used to cost us around £120,000 per year and I reckon I’ll see payback on Dustraction’s installation costs inside 15 months,” he adds. Steve Matuska at Dustraction says that because Handcraft’s new factory site is densely residential in Wellingborough, noise is a major issue. Recent research and development by the Dustraction team at Oadby has resulted in major strides being made in noise reduction; Paul Manchett says: “I had a single fan running before and I’ve now got three, serving many more machine stations, and combined they make less than half the noise.” The new filter is externally mounted on a narrow strip of concrete to the rear of the new factory with transfer fans and silo for woodwaste storage and burning. The filter plant sits on a steelwork support gantry to raise rotary valve airseal outlets for smooth discharge of waste to an inclined conveyor and storage silo by Wood Waste Technology to feed a new boiler for seasonal air heating, cooling and disposal as needed. Dustraction is not yet ready to talk specifics, but Steve Matuska says that the latest news on noise reduction will be available for release soon. WOODWASTE Wood Waste Technology Makes Revolutionary Breakthrough with RHI Approved Biomass Water Boiler Wood Waste Technology’s biomass water boiler has been declared fully compliant with the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme without the need for additional flue gas filtration equipment. This revolutionary breakthrough will significantly reduce the investment and on-going maintenance costs of a RHI compliant boiler, and allow companies who are successful in their application to the RHI scheme to generate many thousands of pounds in rebate over 20 years, plus save money on business bills. Wood Waste Technology’s hot water boiler system burns wood waste to provide three different heating solutions including space heating to factory areas, traditional radiator heating for offices and domestic hot water. As well as being a cost-effective general heating solution, the water boilers can also be used for many other applications, including controlled temperature acclimatisation rooms, paint lines and drying kilns. Engineers at Wood Waste Technology believe they are the first to use purely primary methods to reduce emission levels in a biomass heating solution. They made the revolutionary step forward after many months of innovation and testing, investing more than £100,000 in research and development over the last few years. The RHI scheme pays for renewable heat produced, providing a fixed income for every kilowatt hour of heat generated, providing the biomass technology falls within acceptable emission levels for both oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and particulate. The scheme is worth on average around £20,000 - £25,000 a year to a company fitting a 300kw boiler, and runs for 20 years once accredited. Wood Waste Technology engineers initially

thought the only way to get the emissions low enough to comply with the RHI scheme was to add a ceramic or electrostatic filtration plant to each boiler. Adding a ceramic filter to a 300kw boiler would add around £18,000 to the initial investment cost. In addition, up to £9000 would need to be spent every 2-3 years when the filters need to be replaced. The engineers continued their research and development until they achieved a solution where no extra filters were required drastically reducing the initial and on-going maintenance costs, whilst increasing the returns on investment from the RHI scheme. The team at Wood Waste Technology has tirelessly tested the boiler with some of the most difficult and pollutant fuel waste, including melamine faced chipboard and MDF. In every test, the boiler has stayed within the extremely stringent RHI emission regulations for both NOx and particulate. MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says, “The RHI emissions regulations are three times stricter than Clean Air Act certification. To be able to meet the NOx and particulate emission levels at the same time without expensive filtration equipment is a breakthrough in technology that we believe nobody in Europe can achieve on a boiler this size burning MFC and MDF. This means businesses who buy a Wood Waste Technology biomass water boiler could receive quarterly RHI payments for 20 years, plus reduce their heating and waste removal bills and improve their carbon footprint whilst generating their own energy.” After the initial investment, the rewards for using a boiler on the RHI scheme can be huge. The extra income received as a result of a successful RHI application could run into the hundreds of thousands of pounds over the

Successful application to the RHI scheme can generate many thousands of pounds in rebate over 20 years

20 years of the scheme, in addition to the considerable savings made on heating and waste removal bills by burning waste to create energy. As well as being RHI compliant, the boilers are also now able to operate in clean air zones under the Clean Air Act. Certification was gained during the same testing period and is recognised by DEFRA, so the water boilers now meet the two highest standards in emissions regulations and are able to operate in even the sternest of jurisdictions in the UK. As well as the hot water boilers and wood waste burners, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.

Waste Turned Into Heat at Family Joinery Business Long-established family joinery business RBD Windows is turning waste wood into heat, following its recent move to a new factory in Great Yarmouth. Formed in 1969 by Roger Driver, RBD Windows have been providing high quality windows and doors to the whole of Norfolk for over 40 years. The business specialises in manufacturing timber and uPVC windows and doors and staircases for domestic and trade customers. RBD mostly manufactures in hardwoods including utile, oak and ash but also uses accoya and other softwoods. All softwood windows are Vacsol Aqua preservative pressure-treated in its own facilities. The company recently moved its joinery workshop across Gt Yarmouth to a site adjacent to its glass supplies business RBD Glass. Roger’s sons Ian, Paul and Neil head RBD’s double glazing, joinery and installation

divisions. Paul Driver, director of the joinery business, said: “The new premises have a flat clear footprint and give us the opportunity for production efficiencies.” The move also provided the opportunity to upgrade and enhance RBD’s waste extraction facilities and the company’s directors again turned to Reg Gareppo and his Wood Waste Control company to do the work. Paul Driver said: “We used Reg because we had used him at our previous joinery shop and he has always given us good service and reasonable prices. He does what we want and need, rather than not just sell us things.” Wood Waste Control is one of the UK’s leading dust extraction specialists. Based in Bourne End near High Wycombe it has hundreds of successful installations across the UK, in Europe, Russia and Africa. The ducting installed by Wood Waste Control extracts to a 4Y7 Cyclopex cyclone filter which is fitted with a Raille spark

protection system. From there, ducted waste is passed into a silo where it is joined by shredded offcuts from two Reinbold shredding machines. All the waste is then burned in a new Ranheat boiler and the output goes to heat the company’s joinery, glass and plastic workshops. Paul Driver said: “We are achieving big efficiencies at the new site with productivity improvements and massive reductions in waste. “Wood Waste Control did an excellent job and we are over the moon with the service given by them and the specialist companies they brought in. They could never do enough for us.”

WOODWASTE Company Delighted About Money Savings from Wood Waste Heater A building contractor and bespoke joinery company is celebrating how much money it is saving since it purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. London based MP Brothers Ltd has been operating since 1974. Every winter, the company had to hire in gas heaters to heat its 10,000 square foot factory throughout the cold winter months. Whilst the heaters were necessary to keep its 12 employees in the workshop warm, they were costly to run, so the management at MP Brothers started to look at alternative heating solutions. The company soon realised it could utilise some of the waste wood generated from manufacture to feed a wood waste heater. As well as saving on heating bills, the company would also benefit financially from reduced waste removal costs, as any waste wood could be burnt, rather than disposed of via skips, which was costing the business well over a thousand pounds each month. MP Brothers purchased a WT15 heater from Wood Waste Technology in Autumn 2013, which was installed by Wood Waste

WOODWASTE DCS Cyclonic Solution for MDF Dust Arbor Forest Products, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of timber products to the building, DIY and construction trades, recently commissioned Dust Control Systems (DCS), to supply and install further dust extraction plant at its timber terminal on the Humber estuary in North Lincolnshire. In addition to their already impressive mill facility, which processes more than 35 million metres of timber a year, Arbor Forest Products has recently invested over £3million in a newly built, state-of-the art, MDF moulding production facility. The high throughput manufacturing and finishing resource has been built to produce a comprehensive range of quality MDF moulded products. To deal effectively with the high levels of MDF waste anticipated at the new facility, it was essential, from the outset, to make the best possible choice of filter type for the scheme. Dust Control Systems, a longstanding supplier of dust extraction plant to Arbor Forest Products, was called in to fully evaluate the extraction and waste handling needs. The scheme that DCS presented for the new plant centred round a Cattin Cyclonic type filter. The new, externally-sited, dust extraction plant is designed to handle an overall air volume of 30,000m3/h and to operate on a

continuous basis. Waste is extracted from machines at source by a direct-drive 37kW main fanset which feeds the 3 metre diameter Cyclo-filter. Waste collected by the filter is discharged via a rotary valve into a closed-loop conveying system, which feeds an adjacent 50m3 capacity storage silo. Alternatively, when required, waste can be diverted from the closed-loop conveying system for discharge direct to the boxcart. Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at Dust Control Systems, explains: “We selected a Cattin Cyclo-filter for this installation because they’re the ideal choice when dealing with the heavy dust-laden air that’s

generated when machining MDF. Cattin Cyclo-filters are highly efficient units which employ centrifugal force to separate around 95% of the extracted waste from the air stream, before the remaining particulate reaches a series of tubular filters. Furthermore, the compact Cyclo-filter has very few moving parts, resulting in little or no requirement for maintenance.”
