NEWS The “W” Exhibition Sold To Montgomery Angus Montgomery have announced that they have acquired the “W” Exhibition from Huddlestone Events. Montgomery originally launched the event as the International Woodworking Exhibition back in 1973 to run alongside Interbuild. “W”, previously Woodmex, is now one of the largest trade exhibitions covering 20,000 square metres at the NEC, Birmingham. All the leading companies within the woodworking sector attend the show which is held on a biennial basis over 4 days. Sandy Angus, Chairman of Montgomery commented: “I am delighted to have the exhibition back in the fold and we are confident that our extensive knowledge of the woodworking industry’s sector and the long-term view we take as a business will allow us to nurture the event to the benefit of the industry as a whole.” From the launch of the first ever building show over 100 years ago, the company has launched events across the world and presently run exhibitions and events in over twenty different sectors ranging from high-end art fairs to industrial and mining shows. More information can be found on the Montex website. The next show will be at the NEC from 2nd – 5th October 2016. More information can be found on the website.
Very little waste is generated during the manufacturing of wood into timber and woodbased products Burning virgin wood, wood fibre and preused wood should be the last usage because burning releases locked up CO2 earlier than is necessary. Wood used wisely means the 0.9 tonnes of CO2 stored in a cubic metre of wood continues to be kept out of the atmosphere throughout the initial life of a timber product and then beyond, through re-use and recycling. Furniture Industry Statistics Published With the UK’s economy on the up and an overall increase in consumer spending, there is a positive tone to this year’s Statistics Digest, published by the Furniture Industry Research Association, which contains facts and figures specific to the furniture and furnishings industry from 2010 - 2013. Published annually, the Statistics Digest is compiled using the latest available data sourced from a range of websites. Dr. Peter Beele, Technical Services Manager for FIRA International and author of the publication, said: “Increased retail sales of furniture and furnishings in 2013 were reflected in UK manufacturer turnover which rose to in excess of £7 billion, which is the first time this level has been reached since 2010. Whilst exports also increased to £842 million, this
2 Panel & Joinery Production JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015
improvement was negligible compared to the value attributed to imports (£4.4 billion), the consequence being a widening of the negative trade gap with the rest of the world. Available free of charge to our members, I would recommend the Statistics Digests as an essential read for anyone operating in the furniture sector.” The Digest further segments the furniture and furnishings sector and notable improved manufacturing performances are evident in relation to beds and mattresses, kitchens and office and shop furniture. Provisional figures for 2014 won’t be released by government until the latter half of 2015. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that this year has also a good one for UK furniture manufacturers. Recently published trade data also hints at a
continued improvement in export performance, but ever increasing imports sit menacingly on the horizon. In summary, the statistics suggest that there is room for optimism within the UK, although the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement warns of continued global instability which will clearly impact on UK manufacturing, particularly in relation to exports. Established 65 years ago, the Furniture Industry Research Association was set by the industry for the industry. It provides invaluable technical support to the entire furniture supply chain and funds projects for the benefit of the industry. For further information: www.fira.co.uk

INTERVIEW
An Insight into Insight Disruptive technology has become a frequently used term in recent years and is commonly used to describe an innovation that helps create a new market, eventually disrupting an existing market by displacing an earlier technology. In early 2014, 2020 Technology launched 2020 Insight to the UK market. With over 25 years of continuous software development and knowledge to an industry where remaining cost effective is paramount, has 2020 Technologies finally launched a product that has the potential to disrupt the furniture manufacturing market? Does 2020 Insight bring such innovation to the table that the perfect balance between flexibility and automation has finally been struck? An already dominant leader in the UK design software market, 2020 already boasts over 60% of the kitchen dealers and retailers including big names like Ikea, Nobia and B&Q as customers to its innovative design software. As the only software solution currently able to support both the design and manufacturing process, 2020’s software enables complete end-to-end capability. Ernie Hollister, publisher of PJP, caught up with Steve Edge, 2020’s Director of Sales Manufacturing to ask him how this potentially disruptive technology had been received by the market. The 2020 Insight product is so completely different to anything the furniture manufacturing industry has seen before. Do you think the market is ready to embrace this kind of technology change? 2020 recognises that the manufacturing supply chain requires 3 main functions to be completed – Room Planning, Engineering and Production. 2020 is currently the only software company to have a competitive offering for each of these functions; connecting them delivers a significant advantage to both the manufacturer and retailer in terms of
10 Panel & Joinery Production JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015
reduced cost and risk. The Manufacturers we have spoken to so far have recognized that these advantages deliver truly significant benefits to their business and we are excited about the positive reactions we are seeing within this market so early on. Does 2020 Insight address specific issues that the furniture manufacturing process has not managed to automate yet? Insight differs from other offerings available in several ways: It connects to Fusion, 2020’s market leading room planning solution, allowing orders to be received automatically. It has a configurable engineering rules base which understands how a furniture unit is constructed, automatically adding appropriate connectors between a carcass and its doors and adjusting as the unit size changes, as an example. It has a comprehensive workflow engine which is populated with a set of industry applicable task automations. This enables a manufacturer to automate a whole series of tasks to ensure they are completed in the most efficient manner.
Does 2020 Insight sit alone or can it be used to bridge the gap between other products on the market that perform parts of the current process? Insight can integrate with a number of software solutions on the market, in addition its engineering functionality can be used in conjunction with existing production solutions to address missing functionality. For example, we’ve worked with manufacturers who use SAP for production but need a specialist engineering tool for product design and order entry. The product aims to address the entire manufacturing process, but what specific parts of this process do you feel will really benefit from this type of end to end solution? Insight addresses the engineering and production functions whilst our Fusion product addresses the room planning functionality (using catalogues generated out of Insight). Customers tell us that our graphical interface for product development and innovative BOM structures are of

INTERVIEW
significant benefit, together with the engineering rules base approach. At the production stage we deliver most of the workflow and standard reporting requirements out of the box meaning that the implementation task is much quicker than using generic tools. Is the market expecting/demanding technology to fix the issues it’s currently experiencing? Yes: when manufacturers understand our proposition, its value becomes extremely compelling. The benefits of going beyond managing the engineering and production processes through “point solutions” becomes immediately obvious. What are your competitors’ products lacking? None of our competitors provide industry specific engineering or production solutions and we find that businesses trying to adapt generic tools specifically for the furniture industry have very significant challenges – that are often not met. We regularly see that the engineering and production solutions are addressed with different applications, meaning multiple data sets must be maintained. Connecting these functions is again a very significant challenge Does Insight seek to change the way companies work and deliver their products? It’s not so much change the way they work, more enabling and enhancing what they would like to do. A disruptive technology is often described as a technology that helps create a new way of working, eventually disrupting or changing the way something has
previously been done. Do you think 2020 Insight could be the disruptive technology within this market place, or do you think technology has a long way to go before we see a complete change to how things are currently done? I believe that what we are doing is disruptive, we are changing what has been generally accepted by furniture manufacturers that the room planning / engineering / production processes are disconnected. 2020 are delivering the reality that these functions can be truly connected, providing a step change in productivity and customer service.
This product is already successful internationally, why is it only now that the UK is starting to embrace this level of advanced technology? 2020’s focus in the UK has been focused on retailers and we have secured a dominant position in both professional and on-line room planning functions. My role is to extend our reach and focus on meeting the needs of manufacturers; delivering a product that becomes instrumental in delivering an end to end automated process. What benefits should the UK industry expect to gain from such a technology? Our customers will see significant reductions in product development, order entry and manufacturing lead times. They
See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com
will reduce costs and risks as a result of our connected Insight platform Why is 2020 Insight the technology to get manufacturers excited about change? Insight helps manufacturers to gain control of their “end to end” process, increasing visibility and automation of key tasks. 2020 will take responsibility for this process in a single connected solution, reducing the risk for multiple suppliers. From order entry through to the design process, engineering through to shop floor production, 2020 Insight delivers key functionality that enables furniture manufacturers to better manage their production capacity across multiple plants. Combining real-time planning and interactive scheduling from a single source, the master scheduling capability allows the manufacturer to easily identify potential bottlenecks in production and proactively manage the workload; resulting in a better managed plant and reduced operating costs.

Higham Furniture have six licenses of Cabinet Vision Ultimate, from Vero Software, and an Advanced Screen-ToMachine module to drive their nesting flatbed SCM Pratix router. They use the CAD functionality to maintain their reputation of creating kitchens without compromise, whether a customer has unique ideas, wants to make a design statement or simply requires a personal made-to-measure kitchen. And with Screen-To-Machine being the most powerful automated CAM solution in the woodworking industry, they have been able to dramatically reduce material usage and labour time by streamlining the manufacturing processes. Company owner Tim Higham says: “Before investing in Cabinet Vision three

designs which helps them to make a sale, and produces the necessary NC code to cut the components accurately. Once a customer decides on a traditional or contemporary style, Higham’s designers use Cabinet Vision to create an initial design with standard cabinet and door assemblies, adding beading if required. “It’s just an outline layout at this stage – drawers and racks come later. Some customers only expect 2D plans, and are fascinated that we can show them 3D images, not only of the cabinets, but the whole kitchen space, showing how everything fits in. Cabinet Vision gives us the depth to be able to do this easily – getting the beading and end panelling correct. It makes the difference between putting a fairly standard design together with plain shaker doors, and accurately presenting cock beaded framework and moulding on doors.” He says the software also gives them the ability to produce complex parametric chimneys and mantels, along with ancillary parts and curved units, producing a far superior final visual for the customer, helping them to make a sale. “We spend a lot of time up front with Cabinet Vision to get the design absolutely right, but it ensures the workshop produces it accurately first time.” Using the software means they go from their bespoke design to the cutlist automatically. “Before investing in Cabinet Vision we had a number of issues with spreadsheets and the manual process of converting attractive designs into cutlists. But now, once we’ve got the walls accurately dimensioned and the kitchen fitting accurately to those dimensions, along with correct doors and cabinets, we simply push a button to create assembly sheets, cut lists and parts.” Providing a full design-throughmanufacture-to-installation service, Higham produce their kitchens from tulipwood, maple, and European and American white oak. Carcases are generally lacquered oak or birch ply, with Cabinet Vision being used in some capacity on around 95 per cent of finished products.

The designs are emailed to Workshop Manager Jason Frizzell who strips the job down into individual components. “We have separate cutting lists for the doors, cabinets, drawers and framework. Cabinet Vision gives me a full set of information, providing exactly what our craftsmen need to manufacture each kitchen. “Before installing the Pratix NST-48 CNC router and Cabinet Vision we cut all the components on a dimension saw, which was labour intensive. Now the operation is around 20 times faster.” It also saves him considerable time in his own job, as he used to go through everything on the cutting list manually, to ensure it was correct. “Cabinet Vision is a massively important tool in making sure we achieve what we do, especially on the intricate jobs. Everyone in the studio can create a Cabinet Vision component in London, that all 24 of us in the workshop here can fully understand. If we need to change a dimension or where a

panel is positioned, we can do it here...it doesn’t need to be sent back to Fulham.” Tim Higham also makes full use of Cabinet Vision’s support service. “As well as an annual maintenance contract which means we always get the latest release, I have a special arrangement for one day’s consultancy a month. I sometimes don’t have time to create a new parametric chimney or mantel, or to work on a new style, so a Cabinet Vision engineer comes in once a month to handle the parts I don’t have time to do. This ensures we utilise Cabinet Vision to the full, to get the very best out of it.”

SCM's Largest CNC in the UK Installed at Montracon Montracon are one of the leading manufacturers of top quality trailers in Europe supplying all types and the widest range of Box Vans, Curtainsiders, Flats, Double Deckers and Fridge trailers, from three manufacturing sites in Market Weighton and Doncaster, Yorkshire and in Mallusk, Northern Ireland. Montracon have recently expanded and upgraded their three sites with a multi-million pound investment. At Montracon's Market Weighton factory, they specialise in refrigerated trailers, supplying all the major UK supermarkets, multi-national companies and independents. They manufacture their own fridge panels to ensure the very best quality and high thermal efficiency are not compromised. Using Styrofoam panels free of CFC / HCFC's in construction is better for the environment. They also have a high resistance to water absorption and add considerable strength to the finished structure. Due to increased production requirements as sales are continuously increasing, Montracon's Senior Production

Manager, Stephen Reeve, had to urgently investigate the machining of their trailer sides and roofs as their old mechanically operated machine was struggling to cope. He therefore contacted SCM Group UK, based in Nottingham, were SCM's Area Sales Manager, Ian McCarthy, visited Montracon to discuss their exact requirements. A CNC machine with a very long table, 23 metres by 4.5 metres infact, to accommodate trailer sides and roofs was specified and therefore an SCM Routech 'Area' machine was quoted and an order Table and machining cabin of SCM Routech CNC machining centre at Montracon

quickly followed. Of the hundreds of CNC's supplied in the UK by SCM, this would be the largest CNC Machining Centre installed in the UK market with an investment by Montracon of over ÂŁ350,000 on the Area and tooling etc. Stephen Reeve comments "We were very impressed with SCM's proposal as the machine also included a 5-axis Prisma 'T' machining head that would accommodate a large diameter sawblade that would trim all 4 sides of a typical 103mm thick doublesided GRP laminated foam panel and also drill any holes required for assembling various items located in a trailer to meet customer's demands." After laminating their panels, due to the high dimensions, they are craned on to the Area's table and positioned by two Routech overhead laser geometry projectors. Tools for the 13KW high powered Prisma T head, with 5 interpolating axes, are selected from a 12-station rack-type tool changer that is
anchored to the large mobile gantry itself, so tools and saws are always on board enabling fast changeover and speeding up production. The Area's design is based upon a modular system allowing the customisation of the worktable that can be up to 50metres long if required. The solid and robust structure moves on precision, low vertical profile rails to ensure high levels of accuracy and therefore allows the operator to access the table if required. The protection cabin completely covers the working area and therefore drastically reduces dust and noise emissions. The Area's operator and programmer, Paul Machen, uses Alphacam and SCM's 'Quick Link' to program the Area. 'Quick Link' is a tool that allows the operator to interface with all the best Cad/Cam's available on the market. It is not necessary to program individual elements, the information comes from the CAD that

designed the component and 'Quick Link' does the rest. Stephen Reeve concludes "I took all my personnel to the Routech factory with Ian McCarthy to sign-off the machine and was very impressed. After a few weeks getting used to this new technology and the Area's installation, commissioning and training by SCM, we are very pleased with the machine. It has enabled us to increase production and the quality of our trailer sides and roofs in this ever competitive market."

Wreake Valley go for Kündig ESTABLISHED in 1951, Wreake Valley Craftsmen creates thoughtfully designed, carefully made and immaculately finished furniture. A company that is committed to combining traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods, Wreake Valley Craftsmen continually invests in the most modern machinery and systems, enabling the company to match the prices of high volume manufacturers whilst maintaining the highest quality standards. So when the company’s wide-belt sander was no longer providing the results that Wreake Valley Craftsmen wished to achieve, it was replaced by a new Premium-2 1100 RE from Kündig. Describing the old sander at the end of its life, company owner, Andrew Duncombe said: “Our old sander was just getting worn out: motors were going and things on it were not working properly. A replacement was required.” Much of the work carried out by Wreake Valley Craftsmen is the sanding of veneered panels, which requires a particularly high degree of accuracy. Andrew described how the company was already favourably inclined towards Kündig, having a Kündig Uniq edge sander with which they were very pleased. Investigations of the wide-belt sander market took Andrew and his team to W12, where they were able to see the Kündig Premium on show. “We thought they were very good quality,” says Andrew. This was followed by a visit to the Kündig facility in Switzerland, to see the machines demonstrated and the machines in build. Andrew comments that the visit to Switzerland was quite informative, and a useful exercise. He continued: “We did look at a couple of other sanders and decided that, although the Kündig Premium was not the cheapest sander available, it offered the best value for money: it was the quality we were looking for.” The Premium is a key part of the workshop equipment: as Andrew says, “Virtually every job that we do goes through it.” He continues, “We do a mixture of
16 Panel & Joinery Production JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015
things but the bulk of what we are doing is sanding veneered board. You need to be very accurate to be able to do that.” Key advantages of the new sander are “Reliability - and the fact that you aren’t going to sand through the veneers.” The sander selected by Wreake Valley Craftsmen has two sanding heads, the first being a calibrating roller and the second being an electronic segmental sanding pad with a working width of up to 1,100 mm. All new Kündig sanders now come equipped with the Eco energy saving mode, which constantly checks the electricity required by the sander. If, after an appropriate period of time, no workpieces are being processed, the machine automatically enters an energy saving mode. According to Kündig, studies have found this saves about 10-15% of the electricity that would otherwise be required. In order to produce the high quality finish and high level of precision required by Wreake Valley Craftsmen and similar
clients, Kündig pays particular attention to the mechanical engineering of its sanders: from initial design, in the choice of components and parts, during construction and through to commissioning of the machine in the customer’s premises. Research carried out by Kündig over the years has led to innovations such as automatic thickness measuring over the whole working width, the direct storage of actual operating settings and of course the fixed bed system which offers far easier handling of the machine as it is the sanding group which adjusts to the desired height, giving a fixed platform from which to work. The quality of the finished article is important to Wreake Valley Craftsmen: to quote the company website, “Every item of furniture that we make, whether it is a single bespoke piece, or part of a major contract, is subject to our stringent quality checks, including a personal inspection by one of our time-served craftsmen. The same rigorous approach to quality is maintained by our project designers and fitting teams. We believe that every pro- ject is unique: our goal is always to provide complete satisfaction.” This philosophy is shared by Kündig, and perhaps explains why the Kündig Premium was such a good fit for Wreake Valley Craftsmen. When asked if he would recommend the Premium, Andrew immediately replied: “Yes: we have had good service, and it is a very good sander.”

Venjakob Clean up a Sticky Situation Venjakob have developed their latest glue spray machines for membrane pressing to eliminate the need for costly paper conveying systems. This saves the expense of getting rid of a solid roll of glued paper behind the machine. The latest machines are now equipped with a self-cleaning Teflon conveyor belt, giving continues through feed production. The components are conveyed through the spray chamber, where the adhesive is applied by 4 reciprocating spray guns, the components exit the spray chamber and the belt returns under the machine. The glue overspray is dried and then cleaned from the belt. The overspray is collected as dry particles which are easy to dispose. The clean belt returns to the front of the machine, ready for the next panels in a continuous process. For higher volume production where the edges of the MDF panels require more applications of adhesive Venjakob have developed the VEN SPRAY VARIO spray machine. Problem-Solving the Ney Way Problem-solving is all part of the Ney service - and it’s led to nine years of loyalty from Ranco. When you’ve got a problem, you go to an expert to find a solution. And that’s exactly what Parminder Singh Ranauta, the MD of Perivale-based Ranco Kitchens & Bedrooms did. “When my uncle and I started the company, we had a bad experience with a second hand machinery supplier,” he recalls. “We were a small business. We couldn't afford to pay our workers if the machines we were using stopped working. We put the feelers out for a new supplier and we found Ney to be a great help. They were there in our time of need and because of that, we've stayed loyal to them.” Ranco’s most recent problem stemmed from the standard Edgebander they were using: it was creating visible glue lines. To overcome this, the team spent many hours cleaning the machine and trying different

colours of glues but to no avail. “It was a time consuming process which would have eventually started to cost us much more
than man hours. We needed to find a solution.” With Ney made fully aware of Ranco’s

problem, Parminder visited Ney’s In-House show to see the Airtronic Edgebander. “We'd been told about the machine before it was launched,” recalls Parminder, “And I was keen to see what it could do. The finish got my attention immediately. You would honestly think the board was one single piece. I had seen nothing like it before so I bought it there and then. It was the first Airtronic to be sold in the UK.” The machine was bought and installed in the same week. “This is the type of service you come to expect from Ney,” adds Parminder, clearly delighted with his supplier. “That's why we've worked almost exclusively with them for over nine years. I buy edging tapes, foils, glue, wirework, runners, hinges, handles and bedroom wirework from Ney.” Over the nine years Ranco has worked with Coventry-based Ney Ltd, the company has flown members of the Ranco team to
Germany to meet machinery manufacturers as an aid to deciding on other machines - and Ranco now has quite a collection from Ney. “I don't know another supplier who would do that,” he says. ”The sales staff are always on hand to help us. Whilst Ranco's team is highly trained and used to working with woodworking machinery, Ney's technical engineers spent time with the team when installing the new machine to limit any downtime caused by the installation. It’s clearly paid off. Since the introduction of the Airtronic, product quality has increased and the time taken to clean the machine has been considerably reduced. “Because the Airtronic doesn't need to use a glue pot, it's really simple to clean,” says Parminder. “What was a major problem has been completely rectified with this machine. I can't rate it highly enough.” To find out more about the Airtronic

BOARDS & PANELS
Alrow Pits Its Faith In SterlingOSB Alrow Services, a family-run property maintenance business based in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, is an enthusiastic user of Norbord's market-leading SterlingOSB. One of the most versatile timber board products on the market, SterlingOSB is widely used in construction, repair and maintenance for everything from partitioning to flooring. But Alrow's most frequent use of the product is in boarding-up vacant properties or temporarily securing broken windows and doors. "We often have challenges - usually at very short notice - for which we offer an emergency service and use OSB" explains founder and managing director, David Phillips. "We have accounts at quite a few national suppliers - Plumbase, Parts Centre, Howdens and Travis Perkins. The latter is where we purchase all our building materials, including Norbord SterlingOSB", adds David. The company also carries a small stock of 9mm SterlingOSB itself, as boardingup tends to happen out-of-hours. "We generally use half-inch [9mm] for boarding up, though recently we used some three-quarter [18mm] OSB for a roof job", says David. This job was, in fact, the re-roofing of the AOne Business Centre where Alrow has its headquarters. "Four years ago, I put together a team of chaps I knew who were all looking for office space when a building came up for sale in my street," says David. "We eventually purchased the flat-roofed office and, after a ÂŁ40k refurbishment, we created AOne Business Centre." The building now has ten offices, all rented out to small businesses. But three more years passed before the team could raise enough money for essential repairs to the leaking flat roof. "In July, we finally had the roof replaced using Norbord three-quarter-inch OSB supplied by our local branch of Travis Perkins," says David.
20 Panel & Joinery Production JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015
Pictured is a before and after image of how Alrow Services use Norbord’s SterlingOSB
"It's not our main business, replacing roofs," admits David, "but we have a range of sub-contractors which undertake our repairs so we had a felt-roofer on hand to undertake the work." Because the offices were occupied, it was not possible to remove the old roof, so it was decided to over-board the existing structure. "It was the easiest and least disruptive route," says David. However, the team had "a few issues" with the 1960s guttering which was hidden behind a brick fascia, creating an inbuilt channel, says David. "This was causing most of the leaks. The solution was to drop the brick fascia, level off the wall using strips of Norbord OSB cut for us by Travis Perkins and fixed into the top edge of the brickwork," explains David. "We then fixed an OSB fascia over-cover with PVCu fascia board and deep flow guttering." Finally, the roofer over-boarded the old roof with more than 60 sheets of 18mm SterlingOSB before finishing with three layers of hot-laid felt.
Although building maintenance is what Alrow is all about, this was not an everyday job for the company, admits David. But using SterlingOSB is something the company does do on a routine basis, and installing the new roof was no great challenge. "It was a great success - we have a watertight roof at last!" says David.

EGGER UK’s head of décor development Elliott Fairlie said: “Since launching our ZOOM Update earlier this year, comprising 23 new decors and six textures, what we describe as our ‘Feelwood’ textures have been extremely popular. “The decision to invest in additional production capability for this range in the UK, rather than importing from sister plants in Europe, means our customers can expect shorter lead-times, more flexibility on sizes and smaller minimum order quantities. “Our investment in a new texture plate and the associated set-up costs enables this board to be made in Hexham and follows the enthusiastic reception our new deeply-textured synchronised pore boards have received in the KBB sector. “The trend towards ultra-realistic rustic wood-grains that has been so evident in recent years – particularly in premium German and Italian kitchens – shows no sign of going away anytime soon. David Clouting Dares To Be Different Identifying the latest fashionable trends in KBB furniture is a topic in which David Clouting Ltd has developed a high level of expertise, further emphasised by the introduction of its latest high gloss additions to its Decofoil range. Ignored by many when it first emerged over 10 years ago, others claimed high gloss was a passing fad that would not last. David Clouting, however, has continued to develop its selection of high gloss designs, allowing customers to remain at the forefront of KBB furniture design. Its latest introductions are Light Grey Gloss KADR4-PG, Cashmere YEM18-PG, Stone Grey NCAB5-PG Stone Grey and Dakar NCAB3-PG. These will provide designers with further essential options to
match the demands of consumer demand for high gloss finishes. All four designs have proven their popularity in the market in matt PVC and MFC finishes, so their transition to high gloss will further extend their appeal. Their introduction is further proof that high gloss has considerable potential to serve the market for many years to come. Light Grey Gloss works well with Pfleiderer U1188 HG and Egger U708 St 15, providing a lightness of tone to suit commercial furniture design and reflect the optimism and confidence of more positive economic times predicted for the years ahead. The remaining three choices of Cashmere, Stone Grey and Dakar have all proven popular as solid colours, initially
originated by Egger. These high gloss versions are an attractive but logical extension of the Decofoil Innoface matt versions. The most recent of these is Cashmere, which has quickly been adopted by leading furniture manufacturers. The gloss effect further enhances its subtle, soft warm tone and emphasises its joyful effect. David Clouting has established itself as the leading provider of stocked gloss foil finishes and the latest additions to its Decofoil High Gloss range provides yet more confirmation of its status. Kitchen Trends for 2015 matt finishes. “Yes, not only do they look great but these finishes are ideal in a family home because you won’t see the finger marks as much as you would on a gloss door.”
So another year has passed and as we wave goodbye to 2014 and say Hi to 2015 it’s all about what’s hot and what’s not. It’s heating up in the kitchen stakes, with the pantone colour for 2015 just announced as Marsala but will this be introduced into the kitchen? BA Components Head of Product Development Kieran McCracken gives us his views on upcoming trends.
Gloss kitchens We won’t be seeing the death of the gloss door according to Kieran, In fact, with the soft colours; gloss is still very popular and seen as a modern option when you team this look with handle-less doors. I spoke about handle-less doors in a one of my blog posts.
Colour mixing cabinets The colour-mixing trend has taken off massively in 2014 and, we have seen this trend pop up all over the Internet. People are no longer opting for the ‘safe’ option when it comes to the kitchen, but daring to be different. Kieran, how can we follow the trend of this pantone colour? “As the Marsala colour is a red tone, opting for two colours in the kitchen would allow you to introduce the Marsala colour without total commitment.” Presenting two colours to the kitchen introduces the fun factor and allows you to have your base cabinets a different colour to the wall cabinets or you could opt for a different coloured kitchen island.
Matt kitchens We are seeing Matt kitchens pop up a lot. Can you tell us more about this trend? “It has been all about the gloss for the past few years but we are seeing an increase in the demand for a matt finish.” We asked Kieran about noticing the even more popular; textured
Wood grain Having visited several countries in 2014, Kieran tells us how wood grains are coming back into fashion. “In mainland Europe there has been a surge in demand for wood grain finishes. So rest assured this trend will sweep this direction very soon.”
Mix and match If you have limited space and a small kitchen then the trend of mixing finishes would work well. This look is gaining momentum as “people are mixing a light unicolour matt wall doors with contrasting base doors in gloss to reflect the light.” “This can also been seen with the mixing of strong wood grains used in base units or islands and matt or gloss light unicolour used on wall units, this is to reflect the light and works especially well when you have a north facing kitchen with little direct sunlight, or a kitchen with small windows.” So there you have it, the kitchen trends for 2015. What will you opt for?

FINISHING Osmo Gets The Thumbs Up In Scotland When a family took on a new self-build project in 2008 to build a ‘Double Log’ construction as their new home in Woodhead, Aberdeenshire, they were in need of interior and exterior wood treatment. Osmo’s eco-friendly wood finishes were recommended to provide an aesthetically pleasing and longlasting protection. Six years on, and the Osmo finishes are still providing optimum results. Long Rig is located in the crest of a hill, offering fantastic views of the Gampian Mountains. Not wanting to distract from the beauty of the natural landscape, Russell and Janice Quinlan chose to build a wooden house. All exterior and interior wood of Long Rig is Finnish Pine. With so much wood on display, a reliable and protective wood finish was required. After a recommendation, the homeowner chose to use Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain in Pine (700) for exterior wood and Osmo Wood Protector for all interior wood.
Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain, an oilbased protective finish was applied to the exterior of Long Rig. The finish provides protection against all weather conditions. With its active ingredients defending the material from mould, algae and fungal attack, Woodstain was the perfect finish for the wooden house situated in the hills of Aberdeenshire. “The finish allowed the woods national colour to influence the final tone, which resulted in a lovely finish for our house,” explains Russell Quinlan. “We have been so impressed with the Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain. It’s offered great protection, never cracking, peeling or flaking.” Turning their attention to the inside of the property, Russell Quinlan opted for Osmo Wood Protector. This finish preserves the original quality of the natural wood. It is a great product to use in areas of high moisture such as the kitchen and bathroom due to its increased water protection. It was the perfect primer for the
internal wooden finish at Long Rig. The interior was then finished with Polyx Oil. “We have been delighted with the end result, both internally and externally,” adds Russell. “All wood was fully treated with Osmo products and in the six years since the build, we have been very pleased with the performance of the Osmo.”

You Don’t Need to go French to Produce Fancy Finishes Osmo UK introduced its Polyx®-Oil Clear Gloss finish earlier this year to add a bit of shine to wooden floors and furniture. A few months down the line, and the product has received high praise from woodwork expert and YouTube blogger, Peter Parfitt. Peter’s latest project is a pedestal desk, made from solid American walnut. To complete the design, Peter required a hardwearing finish for the desk. Having taught French polishing many years ago, this would have been his finish of choice. However, this time, Peter opted to use Osmo’s Polyx®-Oil Clear Gloss finish and is extremely pleased with the result. As part of his New Brit Workshop channel on YouTube, Peter has uploaded his review of the product after applying the finish on the desk. He discusses the application process which includes two coats of the product. The finish is applied using a small brush and then wiped with a paper cloth to provide a thin and even coat.
After each coat, Peter left the surface to dry for 8 – 10 hours. Applying with the grain, the finish provides a deep and mature sheen. After treatment the wood is strengthened from within and retains its elasticity. It becomes water repellent, stain resistant and hardwearing, because it meets the wood’s natural demands and does not crack, flake, peel or blister. Osmo Polyx®-Oil is resistant to water and dirt, is very durable and smoothens wood surfaces. The natural vegetable oils and waxes allow for even colouring. Another key benefit of this wax-oil is that Polyx®-Oil has a reduced solvent content making it virtually odourless. Polyx®-Oil is a much healthier (and also more pleasant) wood care product to use for anyone suffering from asthma or other breathing

problems. Osmo Polyx®-Oils do not contain biocides or preservatives, making it a much preferred product over the conventional, solvent-based oil or wax finishes. PROFILE HOMAG Launches New Ambition Edgebanders Range A new range of HOMAG Ambition edgebanders was launched at the company’s TREFF show in Schopfloch during September 2014. The latest Ambition machines are characterised by the comprehensive range of equipment which comes as standard on all models. Each, for example, features a steel top pressure guide for precision work piece guidance, whilst all the trimming tools come complete with the I-system for optimum chip disposal and processing quality. These new high performance HOMAG Ambition machines are energy-saving and environmentally friendly. The new range has been designed to deliver improved productivity, with variable feed speeds from 16-20 m/min for the 2200 series, 16-25 m/min for the 2400 models and 16-30 m/min for 2600 series machines. To provide total flexibility, some
of the models also come with a free space so that additional processing units such as grooving or belt sanding can be included on the machines. “Yet again, HOMAG has set the bar high with its latest range of Ambition edgebanders,” claims Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG UK. He continues, “The level of kit that comes as standard with these machines is remarkable, they really do offer tremendous value for money. Any manufacturer wanting high edge quality will find the right machine for their needs in this range which delivers enormous flexibility through the capacity to process all types of material. “In the UK, it is likely that the 2200 series models will be the most popular in the range. However, as the zero-joint airTec technology can be integrated into the entire range it adds to the high level of specification and performance, so there is
bound to be considerable interest across the entire Ambition range.” The HOMAG Ambition 2274 and 2284 can be used for gluing solid, coil or strip edges at a feed rate of 16-20m/min. The separating agent spraying unit and the jointing trimming unit ensure the optimum preparation of work pieces prior to gluing. The sprayed separating agent application simplifies the removal of glue residues whilst the jointing trimming unit provides the perfect basis for splinter-free glue joints with a consistently high standard of product quality.
Gluing units – reliable hot melt glue application On these models, an EVA pre-melting unit comes as standard. The heated glue roller ensures an optimum gluing temperature. If required, the gluing unit can also be specified with a PU pre-melting

unit, allowing the rapid changeover between two different colours or PU. Also, to allow different edge heights to be processed with a consistent work piece thickness, the magazine height can be adjusted. For further flexibility, the airTec invisible joint technology can be specified or retro-fitted as required.
Snipping units – the perfect preparation for trimming The snipping units prepare the work pieces for subsequent trimming. The face side can be snipped either straight or with a chamfer. In terms of trimming, there are a number of options from the rough trimming unit through to the four-motor profile trimming unit for corner rounding. The trimming units are equipped exclusively with I-tools. This and the HOMAG-patented HSK interface ensure a high standard of processing quality and a long tool life. For rounded edges, the dualmotor profile trimming units permit both corner rounding and trimming of upper and lower projecting edges. To give the edges a showroom finish, the machines have a profile scraper for smoothing trimmed edges and a glue joint scraper unit for disposal of glue residues at the top and bottom of plastic edges. The finishing touches are completed with the buffing unit which polishes up the edges.
Optional automation packages Simon Brooks again, “For companies looking to gain even better productivity HOMAG offers a couple of high yield packages to enable faster retooling. The ‘Future’ package permits steplessly automated changeover between profile and chamfer, whilst the ‘Performance’ package implements automatic changeover of two profiles and chamfer. “These packages enable faster resetting, repeat accuracy and increased productivity because all changes are stepless, using controlled servo axes for precisely positioned programmed adjustment.” In addition, there is a nesting package for processing acute or obtuse-angled parts or parts with hinge holes of the type produced by nesting; a foil/high-gloss package and the PU glue unit. For those opting for the Ambition 2284, there is the added flexibility of a free space in the machine which is available for specific equipment such as the grooving unit, the multi-scraper blade or the belt sanding unit for sanding straight veneered and solid edges.
powerTouch – the innovative control system As with all HOMAG Group machines, the new Ambition range provides simple

operation with reliable control via the new wide-screen HD multi-touch monitor. Driven by powerTouch, HOMAG’s innovative control system, the machines are easy and intuitive to use. Modern software modules supply information on the machine status as a glance and integrated help and assistance functions result in greater productivity. “To help with the capital cost, HOMAG Finance offers a range of finance options based on your specific requirements,” concludes Brooks. “But, of course, it’s not the investment costs which decide the economic success of your production; it is the capacity untilisation and unit costs. That is why our primary objective is to combine top class production with higher productivity and consequently lower unit costs.” If you would like more information or a demonstration of the new HOMAG Ambition edgebanding machines, please contact Adele Dixon at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

SCM Nesting CNC Installed at Holmfields Holmfields Limited is a thriving manufacturer of kitchen, bedroom and home study furniture based in Leicester. An SCM Pratix S22-31 B CNC Machining Centre has recently been sold and installed by SCM Group UK's local Distributor, Blyth Woodworking Machinery. Holmfields is a family run business formed in 1995 working in two areas of construction, being furniture manufacture and new house building with Mark and Jo Hemmings running the manufacturing side of the business. Mark has 34 years of experience in the furniture industry and after serving his apprenticeship worked for several manufacturers before starting Holmfields with his family. Quality products and providing excellent service to their customers in Leicestershire and adjoining counties has seen the company continually grow with most of their orders coming from referalls rather than heavy advertising. Mark Hemmings comments "The first few years in business was a struggle and Mark Noon from Blyth Machinery introduced himself to us in the early days. He was always found to be very helpful in offering advice about different machines available on the market that would improve our quality and production levels. In 2002 we purchased a second hand SCM Tech 100 Super machine that was in good working order." "We had to manually input our panel requirements and this was very time consuming but the results were very good and certainly the Tech increased our levels of production. However, as our business further increased, we struggled with demand as it was necessary to cut our panels on a sliding table panel saw then locate them on the bed of the Tech for drilling. This was time consuming and also risked damage to the panels, loss of datum, etc." "Examining our production methods, Mark Noon suggested we look at the latest

Nesting technology where the panels are cut and drilled from a full-size sheet on the same machine in one cycle. After visiting an SCM In-House exhibition and seeing a Pratix being demonstrated, we then looked at two other CNC machine manufacturers to compare specifications, quality, back-up, etc., and decided to place an order for an

market and therefore perfect for factories with limited production space. It gives Holmfields the ability to nest "Jumbo" size sheet materials, 2800 x 2070mm, whether MFC or MDF for doors to obtain the best yield from the board and has therefore significantly reduced Holmfield's waste material. The powerful SCM Electro-spindle, with constant motor power of (S6) 6,6 KW at 24,000rpm, easily cuts through 18mm or thicker boards. A TR13 13-station automatic tool changer with HSK63F tool taper and preset for head attachments plus an SCM F7 7-spindle boring unit for vertical drilling provides a perfect specification for Nesting. SCM's aluminium multi-function worktable achieves a very high level of work piece holding down without resorting to several high-power vacuum pumps. The result is secure hold down of both the lower slave panel and the machining panel giving an excellent machining speed even when nesting small dimensioned panels. An internal flow speed of up to 250Km/h giving high efficiency on the whole worktable and less power consumption giving energy saving that is ecologically beneficial. SCM's “PRO-SPACE” safety protection ensures the Pratix is safe and compact and

is ideal for those with limited available space, and is distinguished by the absence of perimeter machine protections. Bar-type protections are mounted directly on the Pratix's mobile upright and therefore also provides free access to the rear of the machine for loading and unloading. Holmfield's machine is programmed by Cabinet Vision along with SCM's Xilog
Maestro and is generally programmed in the office and transported to the machine by USB. It also has Telesolve so contact can be made directly with SCM UK's CNC Service Department if required. Holmfields use Rafix fittings to build their cabinets that do not require horizontal drilling of panels so makes machining and assembly extremely fast and efficient. Diamond tooling is used with 3-piece tips and generally last over 2-3 months before replacement. Mark Hemmings concludes “When we ordered the Pratix, delivery, installation and training went like clockwork, with some teething problems which are to be expected. After the weeks training we were up and running and we have been able to train other members of staff. We would not like to be without the Pratix, it is a huge asset to our company”

PROFILE AXYZ International Expands the Possibilities for CNC Routers Leading supplier of high-performance CNC routing, engraving and cutting solutions, AXYZ International continues to provide a wide range of routers under its AXYZ and Pacer power brands. These have been widely adopted by operatives in the industrial woodworking, furniture and joinery production and panel processing industries. A preferred routing solution from AXYZ International is the 4000 series of machines and in particular the 4008/4010 models. The 4008 has a processing area of 2,440mm (length) by 1,466mm (width) and can be supplied with a host of both standard and optional performance-enhancing features. These include a radically expanded automatic tool change (ATC) facility for multiple tasking that offers both automatic and manual tool change functions. AXYZ routers now have the option of a host of machine upgrades to further enhance their performance capabilities. Arguably, the most significant of these is the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility. This ensures that the material being processed is always held
securely throughout the cutting process to provide optimum accuracy and a superior cut finish. In addition to greatly enhancing material hold-down efficiency, the facility eliminates material wastage as well as reducing machine downtime caused by incorrectly set vacuum valves. The AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility supplements and supports other performance-enhancing features introduced by AXYZ International. These include the latest A2MC machine control system that greatly reduces ‘bounce’ and vibration caused by sudden acceleration or deceleration often found with other control systems and the AVS (AXYZ Vision System) facility integrated within the A2MC controller. The AVS is fully compatible with all of the cutting tools used on AXYZ routers, including oscillating, tangential and drag knife cutters, to enable a much wider
range of materials to be processed. A further optional enhancement is the new helical rack and pinion drive system that greatly reduces machine wear. This enhancement is attributable to the system’s multiple gear teeth that ensure a more even distribution of the workload, resulting in significantly increased feed rates, more precise cutting, quieter machine operation and ultimately a longer machine life. Supporting AXYZ and Pacer CNC router options is the expanded CNCRoutershop online division. This provides a 24-hour resource for a vast range of CNC tools and accessories that will accommodate not only the requirements of machines supplied by AXYZ International but also those of virtually any other manufacturer regardless of the type of machine or country of origin.

PROFILE HOMAG Group CNC Machining Centres Set The Industry Benchmark CNC is the acronym for ‘Computer Numerical Control’. It morphed from the older term ‘NC’ (‘Numerical Control’) when, prior to commercial computers, machines were generally controlled using punched tape. NC, and later CNC machines, allowed for tremendous increases in productivity because the machines could run automatically without constant attention from operators. The first commercial punched tape NC machines were built in the 1950's. While the concept immediately proved it could save costs, it was so radically different that it was very slow to catch on with manufacturers. It wasn’t until the 1980s that CNC machines started to make significant inroads into the woodworking industry. From the outset, both HOMAG and WEEKE have pioneered the field and consequently have established themselves as the global benchmark.
Automation and precision – the key benefits of CNC machining centres CNC routers, typically in 3, 4 and 5-axis formats, produce consistent, high-quality work and improve productivity. Unlike a jig router, the CNC router can produce a one-off as effectively as repeated identical production. CNCs reduce waste, the frequency of errors and the time it takes to get finished product to market. They can perform the tasks of many carpentry shop machines such as panel saws, spindle moulders and drilling equipment. Ideal for most sectors of the market, CNC routers and machining centres are used in door, furniture, staircase, window and interior fittings manufacture, to name but a
few. In short, CNC routers help ensure part repeatability, high factory output and consistent quality. Between them, HOMAG and WEEKE have a range of machines that satisfy the demands of every market sector, from small specialist woodworking companies through to large mass production industry giants. Throughout the entire spectrum, the HOMAG and WEEKE solutions offer not only cutting edge technology, but also ‘lifetime’ value for money.
WEEKE’s ground-breaking BHX 050 ultra-compact drilling centre Launched at Ligna in 2009, the WEEKE BHX 050 Optimat gives producers an ultracompact throughfeed drilling centre at a trim price tag. It is the ideal drilling solution for small, medium or large businesses. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of HOMAG UK comments, “Sales of the BHX 050 have been outstanding. Recently, the 2000th machine was sold, underlining the benefits this CNC machining centre brings to kitchen, bedroom or office furniture producers. “Taking up less than 5m2, the unique advantage of the BHX 050 is that it is packed with all the features of a conventional CNC, but is small enough to fit comfortably in any production facility. “This reliable 3-axis processing centre is capable of drilling on five sides and is able to groove and rout at fast throughput rates. Despite its impressive performance figures it also keeps energy bills down due to its low energy usage.”
Highly flexible and cost effective In standard trim, the BHX 050 is capable
of processing panels as small as 200 x 70 x 12mm and as large as 2500 x 850 x 60mm. There is also an option to increase this working length to 3050mm. Simon continues, “The BHX 050 can process any type of wood panel and is most commonly used for MFC, MDF. We have had situations, however, where even demanding materials such as Trespa and solid wood components are being handled by this robust machine. “Although it is classed as an entry level machine, no compromises have been made on build quality or safety. The BHX 050 has the features you’d expect from a WEEKE machine, all at a real value for money price.”
WEEKE Vantage 200 – material efficiency, improved response time and increased throughput When it comes to ‘nesting’, the WEEKE Vantage 200 CNC gantry processing centre is a real power-house in the marketplace. Nesting describes the laying out of multiple 2D or 1D-parts in a defined space to be cut from flat stock (boards such as MCF, MDF, etc.). The Weeke Vantage 200 is the fastest and heaviest machine in its class. Weighing in at over 16,000lbs and with processing speeds of 105m/min, this CNC gantry-style processing centre is a true workhorse. Designed to deliver the highest precision over the total working width, the entire working field is reachable with all processing tools, so you can nest parts utilising the full panel size. Depending on your manufacturing needs, the Vantage 200 is available in the following table sizes: 5 x 10, 5 x 12, 6 x 10, 6 x 12, 7 x 10, and 7 x 14. The flexible matrix table system includes multifunctional clamping systems for part hold down. The Vantage 200 also includes many additional enhancements such as automatic labelling, in-feeding and off-loading.

The sealed ‘long-life’ linear guiding system helps guarantee the rigidity and long service life of the gantry.”
The HOMAG BMG 512 – high performance CNC router and machining centre This 5-axis CNC processing centre saves time and provides maximum production flexibility. The BMG 512 integrates sizing, edging and drilling with outstanding quality and efficiency in just one machine. It offers a variety of table systems to accommodate different work pieces and is ideally suited for furniture, home and vehicle interior fittings, stair, window and door production. Simon Brooks explains, “To ensure outstanding processing quality, the BMG 512 is constructed of SORBTECH©, HOMAG’s special vibration-absorbing material which dramatically improves the surface finish of the machined components. The machine is equipped with the DRIVE5C+ highperformance trimming spindle which provides one spindle for all your needs, keeping operations simple and efficient. “Fitted with an edgebanding unit, the BMG becomes a true all-rounder. The machine can perform everything from panel sizing, profiling and drilling to edgebanding, efficiently and to outstanding quality levels.”

Blum’s New Technical Support Hotline The leading fittings supplier to the KBB sector in the UK, Blum, has implemented a new extended hours technical support hotline – 0800 230 0898 - for fitters, designers and manufacturers. The new hotline will offer 8am – 8pm support Monday – Friday, and 8am-12 midday on Saturdays. Blum realises that a strict 9am – 5pm contact availability is no longer adequate for today’s working environment and, with the new hotline, have proved that they are once again at the forefront of service to industry, exceeding expectations. The decision follows the results of a widely circulated questionnaire asking if out of hours support would be useful. Seventy five percent of respondents said “yes”. Blum UK Sales & Marketing Director David Sanders said: “We realise that in

CASE STUDY - SAWS HOLZMA Delivers Quality Cuts at Reduced Costs for Decormax Established in 2001, Decormax enjoys an enviable reputation for its first class customer service and its extensive product range. The company is an ISO 9001:2008, FSC & PEFC accredited distributor of wood-based panel products and decorative sheet materials. The business operates its nationwide distribution network from three depots, each strategically placed to provide speedy full coverage of the UK. Recently, the company moved from its old rented facility to a new 1.2 acre site in Wakefield and, as part of its long-term growth plan, took the decision to invest in a new beam saw. “Our old saw was just about on its last legs,” explains Eric Johnson, Decormax’s managing director. He continues, “Moving the old saw to the new site wasn’t an option, it would have been too expensive and too risky. We had a look around the market to see what was out there, but to be honest I’d discounted a beam saw from HOMAG UK because I was convinced it would be beyond our budget. “Having checked out some of the Italian saws I wasn’t confident they were going to be able to deliver the quality and reliability we were looking for, so I decided to talk to HOMAG UK about its range of HOLZMA beam saws. “On reflection, I’m so glad I made that call. John Shepherd, HOMAG’s area sales manager, was so helpful and recommended the HOLZMA HPP 250 as the saw that would best suit our needs and budget. To my surprise, they had a machine in stock at a price which was really competitive. The

advice and pre-sale service I got from HOMAG UK gave me the confidence to place the order without even seeing a demonstration of the saw. ” Superb service from installation to training and aftersales support “The HPP 250 was duly installed in our new unit and I was very impressed with the speed and efficiency of the process. Our operators were trained on site and we were up and running inside a week. It really was very impressive and thorough. “The gains we have made with this new saw are amazing. It is at least 50% quicker than our old saw and yet the quality of the cut is far superior. We can now cut more accurately and with a cleaner finish, so much so that the boards can be edged without further processing.
“I can’t tell you the confidence that this saw has bought to our business and our operators. Although we only bought the machine in April 2014, it has already paid for itself. What’s more, the accuracy and quality of cut has enabled us to win new business that would have been beyond our capabilities with the old saw. “The CADmatic 4 software is easy to use and the online diagnostic facility is fantastic. Any issues are quickly sorted out and on the odd occasion we have needed an engineer, they have responded very quickly to address our needs. As you would expect from the market leader, spare parts are readily available and the whole set-up gives you immense confidence to deliver a reliable, first class service,” concludes Eric Johnson. HOLZMA - saws that cut the mustard The HOLZMA HPP 250 is one of a range of high quality beam saws from the HOMAG Group. However challenging your cutting needs, HOLZMA has a saw that will provide the right solution for your business, from entry level to industrial manufacturing.

Carriage with Independent Raising of the Main and Scoring Saw Blades is Now Available on the SCM Sigma Prima Beam Saw SCM's “entry level beam saw now opens up new prospects for all potential customers. The independent raising of both the main sawblade and the scoring sawblade is now available on the SCM Sigma Prima beam saw range, thus increasing the potential of using the saw and making possible more machining facilities. The main sawblade and scoring sawblade carriage, with independent raising on linear guides and recirculating ball screws, is in fact essential for the execution of post-formed panel sizing (40mm max. height), slots and grooves with 35mm max. height. Time optimisation and reduction of costs for tool maintenance due to the optimised height adjustment of the main blade projection on two levels, permitting the setting of the lower blade height in order to limit the blade wear and assure a better finishing quality. INSTALLATION - SAWS
Buying Second Striebig a ‘No-Brainer’ for Sheet Cutter A Striebig Control vertical panel saw has brought improvements to the sheet cutting service provided by West London timber and joinery suppliers, A J Ferguson & Co. The Control, which replaced a manual Striebig Standard in use for nearly 20 years, is the only saw the company uses for panel sizing. Said director Jarlath Bluett: “The Standard had given sterling service over the last 18 years. We had no serious problems with it but I felt the time had come to replace it with a more up-to-date model. “It earned me a lot of money over the years following the initial payback period and still had a decent residual value. It was a ‘no-brainer’ to stick with Striebig for a replacement as I knew they offered a top quality saw that was extremely longlasting.” After deciding to buy another Striebig he looked on their web site to see what they had to offer. “I followed this up by going to see a Control being used at a local company and talking to the operator, who gave it a favourable report,” said Mr Bluett. He chose the Control 4216 model because of the need for a semi-automatic machine that would fit into the available
space and which was capable of cutting the 2440 x 1220mm MDF, plywood and chipboard sheets they use, which measure from 4mm to 50mm in thickness. “Another feature in its favour is that it will now allow us to cut MFC boards, which tend to come in larger sizes, something we could not do before,” he said. The powerful Control 4216 has a cutting range of 3300 x 2160mm and a maximum cutting depth of 80mm. It is fitted with Striebig’s optional Electronic Positioning System (EPS) for the automatic positioning of the saw head. This increases the saws’ productivity by delivering automatic repeat strip and upper trim cutting. With manual feeding of the saw unit eliminated the operator’s job is made easier, giving him ample time to prepare the next job. Numerous procedures are carried out at the press of a button, including locking and releasing the beam saw, setting the horizontal cutting height, plunging and swivelling the motor, locking the support rollers during sawing and fine saw blade adjustment. Ferguson’s also specified an optional scoring saw which prevents laminate panel edges from tearing out whilst being sized.

The Control offers fast ‘touch and saw’ operation via an easy-to-use touch screen.
The machine’s operator, Andrew Sowizdrzal, previously used the manual Standard and so is in a perfect position to compare the two saws. He is a big fan of the new Control. “It’s much quicker and easier to set up using the control panel’s touch screen and gives a much more accurate cut. I enjoy using it every day,” he said. A J Ferguson & Co, whose origins in the Shepherd’s Bush area date back to 1918, is predominantly a trade supplier. It has kept up with changing times and its web site is currently being updated to allow customers to order sheet material on-line. To show just how impressed Mr Bluett is with Striebig, a large photograph of one of the latest Swiss-made saws is featured on the company website’s home page. The Control was supplied and installed by Striebig’s sole UK agent, T.M. Machinery Sales, who will be showing machines from the Striebig range on Stand 8F 610 at the W14 show at the National Exhibition Centre in October.

WOODWASTE Wood Waste Heaters on the Move..... Wood Waste Technology has just installed a second wood waste heater into a joinery company in the North West that has moved to new premises. Family business, M & R Joinery Services Ltd had worked from the same 6000 square foot premises in Merseyside since the company was formed 25 years ago - but the building was about to be demolished, forcing the company to move. Manufacturing traditional timber windows and doors produces a lot of waste wood shavings. The family used to give soft-wood shavings away free for animal use to people who kept horses, but as the business started to use hardwood, the shavings were more difficult to offload, and ended up being disposed of in skips. Rather than keep paying waste disposal fees for the wood shavings, the company decided to purchase a briquette machine, to convert the wood shavings into briquettes that could be burnt in the business’s wood waste heater, originally purchased from Wood Waste Technology in 2011. Managing Director, Phil Levenson has only ever worked at M&R Joinery Services Ltd, as he joined his parents business straight from school, and he’s recently taken over the running of the business with his brother Neil. Phil says: “We were apprehensive about moving to new premises, but knew a more modern building with a bigger floor space and more natural light would be a positive change. The WT5 wood waste heater was great in our original smaller premises, but just not powerful enough to heat the new building space which is almost double the size of the previous building, so we contacted Wood Waste Technology to buy a new wood waste heater to complement the old one. “ The company moved into their new 10,000 square foot premises in September 2014, and their new WT10 wood waste heater was fitted shortly after. Whilst the WT10 heats the majority of the building, the experienced engineers at Wood Waste Technology also installed new pipework into 2 separate workshops on the far side of the building that are rented out to two other businesses (who were actually the firm’s neighbours at the old premises, and who

moved with them into the new surroundings), providing them with free heating too. Phil says: “The wood waste heaters are great, as they provide free recycling of all our wood shavings and save us a fortune on heating bills. The guys in the workshop are so warm they work happily in short sleeve tshirts, and we only need a skip for items that don’t burn, like glass and metal. Our old WT5 provides heat to an enclosed 1500 square foot spray booth and finishing area which helps to dry the wet painted products. I can’t recommend Kurt and the team at Wood Waste Technology highly enough. They are most efficient, always deliver what they promise and are a pleasure to deal with.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have
helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications. WOODWASTE Double Benefit for Cambridge Joinery Specialist Cambridge bespoke joinery specialist Law and Lewis has invested £55,000 in efficient new wood waste equipment as part of its expansion into larger premises. Mark Law and Paul Lewis lead a skilled team producing bespoke kitchens, furniture, staircases, doors and windows. “Business is going well,” said Paul Lewis, “and we recently moved into larger premises next door to give us space to continue to grow.” The company now has a workshop, spray shop, assembly area, offices and showroom, as well as storage facilities. Law and Lewis asked three dust extraction specialists for their proposals to specify a modern wood waste extraction and treatment system and chose Wood Waste Control to carry out the work. Wood Waste Control (Engineering) Ltd is based in Bourne End near High Wycombe and has hundreds of successful installations across the UK, in Europe, Russia and Africa. As one of the country’s leading dust
extraction specialists all Wood Waste Control equipment is built to meet COSHH legislation requirements and can stand alone or be used in conjunction with a range of heating systems. Wood Waste Control manufactured and installed a WFS-1950-3J silo filter, with a rotary valve feeding the extracted waste dust into a Reinbold briquette machine. A carousel takes the briquettes which are produced and automatically loads them into bags. The company can opt to burn the briquettes for heating in winter, sell them – or simply give them away if they prefer! “Paul Lewis said: “It’s a great way to deal with the waste we produce. There is a financial benefit from no longer having to pay landfill charges, and an environmental benefit from creating something useful from our waste. “We are very pleased overall. Wood Waste Control were great, and their engineers were fantastic.”

DUST EXTRACTION
DCS Installation Gives Hydewood Legs! Dust extraction specialists Dust Control Systems have recently completed a major installation at the new premises of Hydewood Ltd – a leading UK manufacturer of wooden furniture components. Moving from a site in Harpenden, which they had occupied for 23 years, to a contemporary 11,500 sq ft facility in Welwyn Garden City, provided Hydewood with the opportunity to transform their production operation with the implementation of a modern, efficient layout. Run by husband and wife team, Peter and June Bush, Hydewood produces high quality turned products for clients in the upholstery and furniture manufacturing sectors. Queen Anne, Georgian, Louie and Spade Toe legs, as well as ‘bunfeet’, stools, stair spindles and table lamps, are all included in the large portfolio of products manufactured by Hydewood. With a dedicated team of long-standing employees, everyone at Hydewood is justifiably proud of the firm’s reputation for quality and first

class service. Peter Bush says: “Over the years our old premises had become somewhat crowded as new machines were installed and, with the planned move to new premises, we were keen to ensure that we should make the best possible use of the available space. It was also time to replace our existing dust plant and we knew that the dust extraction installation would play a key role in planning the W10 wood waste heater produces 300,000 btu/hr of warm air.

DUST EXTRACTION layout of the factory.” Dust Control Systems were called in at an early planning stage and were involved throughout the relocation process – working closely with Hydewood, DCS were able to recommend an optimum machinery layout and accurately assess dust extraction requirements for the new factory. Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at DCS, says: “With so many machines to be re-installed and commissioned, the move necessitated a two-week production shutdown, but our engineers were able to install the complete extraction plant in advance of the closure, and pre-install extraction points ready for machinery to be moved into place.” The new extraction system was sized on a duty of 42,300m3 per hour, and comprises a high-efficiency, externally located, modular filter unit with two 37kW lownoise main fan sets. Waste collected in the filter is discharged ‘pressure-free’ via a rotary valve into a closed-loop waste transfer system, which transports the waste to sealed boxcarts. Energy-saving measures involved the installation of an ECOGATE extraction optimisation system which employs two ECOGATE greenBOX12 controllers, together with variable speed

drives to each main fan. The greenBOX12 detects changes in extraction load and adjusts the variable speed fan drive accordingly. The result is a highly-efficient dust extraction system, providing precise extraction volumes, only when needed, and reduced noise levels in the production
facility. Ecogate confidently expect that the system will reduce power usage by around 60% when compared with a traditional fixed-speed system. Melvyn Bathgate adds: “For the Hydewood project we were able to call upon other expertise within the DCS Group by supplying and installing two Gallito benchtype spray booths and exhaust stacks, as well as specifying a manually-fed workshop heater which is fuelled by wood offcuts.” Obviously delighted with their new premises, Peter and June Bush are quick to acknowledge the contribution made by DCS: “The project was handled in a very professional and caring way,” says Peter Bush, “and we have nothing but admiration for the input and expertise of the DCS team in helping us kick-start a new era for Hydewood.”

DUST EXTRACTION
Here’s Two Good Reasons Why Dustraction Suits the Needs of Customers - Across The Board! Dustraction won the contract to put a new face on waste at the shopfloor that makes all the film-sets at Pinewood Studios. Pinewood, at Iver Heath in Bucks, is Britain’s Hollywood - the studios that made the Bond Films famous, made Michael Caine a star and made all the Carry-On films for comedy lovers around the world. The most important watchword at Pinewood, whoever you are, is noise because filming is always going on somewhere on the million square feet of staging. So all the new filters and fans at Pinewood are now located indoors in a dedicated new plant room where several fans and duct mains, each serving a separate area of the shop floor, are now in a new layout that can be shut down in sections when not in use, making big savings in power as well as noise. At Handwork Kitchens in Wellingborough, Nothants, Dustraction was obliged to drop new extraction equipment in by crane from the far side of the company’s new factory and to take all the ducting in through the gable end, where the
filter and transfer fans leave only inches to spare! Handcraft supplies kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and office furniture either as customer-bespoke cabinetry for end users in the construction industry or for selling direct by sole traders, retailers
and dealers. In both of these cases, pin-point accuracy and detailed fulfillment of the clients’ brief were vital. And in both cases, the customers were delighted by the lack of fuss and disruption in day to day use of all of the many machines involved. Steve Matuska at Dustraction was also very pleased by the speed and accuracy in the workmanship by the members of his teams that were involved in both cases. He is looking forward to a new year in 2015 for Dustraction, leading the way for customers who all, he says, have special needs of one sort or another!
