Matt Long It is with deep regret and sadness that I have to inform you of the death of my very dear friend and colleague, Matt ‘Bollard’ Long. Matt came to the UK in 1985 after working on Signature magazine in S.A. He applied for over 100 jobs and finally got offered two on the same day – one with Furniture Manufacturer, the other with a motor sport magazine which he would have preferred but it didn’t include a company car! He worked on Furniture Manufacturer as editor for about 18 months which is where I first met him some 28 years ago. Matt went on to become editor of Wood & Equipment News where I was Advertisement Manager; we made quite a team and became the best of friends. Matt then decided to concentrate on PR and in 1989 set up Kyalami Communications with his wife Jeannie – the company was named after the famous South African Race Track close to his former home in Johannesburg. He quickly built a strong, impressive portfolio of clients such as Jaydee, Elliott Machinery, Giardina and Blum, to name but a few. His clients expanded to cover all aspects of the Kitchen Manufacturing industry; from fittings, machinery, software to kitchen manufacturers. He was a true professional taking time to understand his clients products which therefore allowed him to write knowledgeable articles with full technical information for the trade press. The industry has lost a great character. He will be greatly missed by the trade press and his clients. He was a true friend and I will miss him. Clare and I send our love and deepest condolences to Jeannie, his five children and family. Goodbye my dear mate. Ernie ‘Enyo’ Hollister

NEWS IDS Charity Auction Raises £8,800 for Macmillan Cancer Support International Decorative Surfaces (IDS) raised over £8,800 through a charity auction and raffle, held as part of their annual conference. The money has been donated to their 2014 – 2016 campaign for charity, Macmillan Cancer Support and is one of many fundraising activities taking place in 2015. 60 delegates from IDS attended the twoday conference at the Imperial War Museum in Manchester and the auction and raffle were part of a gala dinner held at the end of the first day. The array of auction prizes included a signed Mark Cavendish cycling shirt, a luxury TV, a golf day at Woburn Abbey and opportunities to stay in holiday properties in Dubai, Majorca and Turkey which all encouraged some competitive bidding. A raffle was also held with top quality prizes on offer including experience days, an iPad and a Fortnum and Mason hamper. The fundraising adds to over £461,000 raised in total for Macmillan Cancer Support by IDS’ parent company, Saint-Gobain, through their ‘Together’ initiative - a unique

partnership between colleagues, customers, suppliers, friends and family supported by Saint-Gobain Building Distribution businesses. Since ‘Together’ was launched in 2002 it has raised £2.3 million and helped make a positive difference to the lives of thousands of people. Says John Bagshaw, Managing Director of IDS: “We are delighted to have raised vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support who are our chosen charity partner for two years and I thank everyone who took part in the auction, whether it was by donating a prize or bidding on the night. We all have an opportunity to make a difference and this provided us with a fantastic start to our fundraising in 2015 and we have many more events planned throughout the year.” This money raised to date by Saint-Gobain UK for Macmillan Cancer Support has been used purely to fund Macmillan nurses, who offer support not only to people affected by cancer, but to their friends and family. Previous charity partners have included the British Heart Foundation, Help the Hospices and Barnardo’s.

John Bagshaw, Managing Director of IDS, presents the cheque for £8,807.50 to Debbie Rushbrooke, the Macmillan Cancer Support Fundraising Manager for Staffordshire.

Furthermore all the know-how of ripping technology is brought together in the location of the company RAIMANN in Freiburg. In the future the development and manufacturing of both technologies for the ripping process, circular saw and band saw, will be located there. This transition is expected to give a significant increase in the innovation and sales potential for the Product Unit Cutting/Gluing. As part of this concentration of activities, the Board of Management of MICHAEL

WEINIG AG has decided, that the operations of the WACO Jonsereds AB, based in Halmstad, Sweden, will be ceased. The Management of WACO will start negotiations with the employees' representatives. The existing distribution channels in Sweden will be strengthened for the entire product portfolio of the WEINIG Group. The service and spare parts for the installed machines of the WACO-line will, as already established since 2014, be coordinated by the Product Unit Service. NEWS Leitz Tooling Tackles Three Peaks Challenge for Children’s Charities On July 3rd 2015 “Team Leitz” will be making their way to Fort William in Scotland to the start of their ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ to raise money for children’s charities Action Medical Research and Haven House Children’s Hospice. Brian Maddox, Tony Kumm and Dave McCann, with support provided by Dave Jepson and Simon Liddell, will climb the three highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours. The hike and climb of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon mountain will total more than 23 miles over 11,000 feet, with a lot of driving in between. Leitz Tooling’s chosen children’s charities are Action Medical Research which is dedicated to improving the health of babies and children through research (www.action.org.uk), and Haven House Children’s Hospice, which delivers specialist nursing care making a huge difference to life-limited children and their families. It’s a very tough challenge, particularly for the novice climbers. Training injuries have already been suffered by Tony Kumm, but as he picked himself up he said “It’s all about the kids; that’s why we’re doing this insane thing. Even with what we’re going through in training and over the 24 hours of the actual climb, we are without a doubt the lucky ones. This is nothing compared to what these children and families go through on a daily basis and it’s our privilege to help”. Team Leitz’s Three Peaks Challenge has been funded by the company, so all money raised will go in full directly to the charities. Every donation will make a difference whether they make it (in one piece) or not, so they ask that you give whatever you can. If Team Leitz reach their fundraising target of £3,000, one lucky contributor will be chosen at random to receive a Surprise Prize, so dig deep and give your support! Donate now on http://www.action.org.uk/sponsor/leitztoolinguk, and follow their progress on www.leitz-tooling.co.uk.

AWARDS

Double Success for Combilift at the FLTA Awards Combilift had plenty to celebrate at this year’s UK FLTA Awards ceremony as it came away with two trophies to add to its already extensive collection of awards from the association that it has amassed over the past few years. As well as developing innovative products for more productive materials handling, Combilift focuses on delivering machines which offer precise and easy operation and winning the Ergonomics Category for its Rotating Operator Console underlines its commitment to providing the best possible environment for the operator. The console allows 90 rotation of the operator and controls within the cabin. Simple joystick operation activates the hydraulic rotation of the seat, steering column, pedals and mast controls, allowing operators to face the load while manipulating it in confined spaces. The suspension seat and steering column are fully adjustable to operator requirements for further comfort. Commenting on the award FLTA chief executive Peter Harvey said: “The rotating operator compartment from Combilift is a prime example of the drive to keep fork lift truck operators comfortable and safe, while achieving the highest levels of productivity and efficiency.”

From l-r Derek Anderson from Category Sponsor Manbat Power Systems; Josh Moffitt of Comblilft, Josh’s younger brother Tommy Moffet, John Gould presenter

After Josh Moffett had accepted the award on behalf of Combilift there was further recognition for the family name when his father, Robert Moffett, Combilift’s Technical Director was the recipient of the FLTA’s highest honour: the Lifetime Achievement Award – although Robert is keen to point out that he is not ready to take things easy just yet and plans to develop many other award winning products in the

years to come! Robert’s name is synonymous with the success of the Moffett Mounty truckmounted forklifts and his engineering expertise and vision has been a key factor in the rapid growth and global reach of Combilift since he established the company with MD Martin McVicar in 1998. “It’s fair to say that Robert has always done things a little differently,” said the FLTA. “He is a problem solver who solves problems before the rest of us have even realised there IS a problem, and his fearlessness – accompanied by almost supernatural energy - has proved him to be both a creative genius and a hugely successful entrepreneur.”

Imago Takes on a Ferrari There aren’t many door hardware companies that can place themselves in the same class as Ferrari, Ducati and Maserati, but Imago Lift & Slide Door from AGB Hardware can. Established in 1954, the ADI Design Index acknowledges the most significant in Italian designs, and in 2014, Imago was shortlisted for the prestigious Compasso d’Oro award. Representing the entire breadth of industrious design, the Italian Association for Industrial Design (ADI) keeps a collection of winning products from the history of the awards in a special exhibition managed by the foundation. In 2004 it was declared part of Italy’s National Heritage. ADI recognises and honours the quality and value in Italian design. Imago is the first lift and slide door to be recognised by them and it’s unsurprising. ‘Technology must be beautiful’ is the philosophy at AGB and Imago truly is beautiful technology.

With the slimmest timber frame on the lift and slide market, Imago has been designed to create a door with the widest glazed area available, so views overlooking stunning mountains or countryside aren’t broken up by individual door leafs. The sliding door offers the pioneering Poseidon lock which provides maximum security levels. The hardware is installed flush to the frame so that it does not disrupt the aesthetic of the design. Imago features the Climatech threshold, manufactured from a fibreglass reinforced material which guarantees excellent thermal performance. A strong barrier against wind, rain and cold air, Imago doors are perfect for all weather conditions. It looks spectacular and has the natural movement of wood, but it’s also been engineered to be extremely energy efficient and secure. “Imago Lift & Slide. It’s not just a door,” says Marco Zen, Sales Manager for UK & Ireland for AGB. “It’s an engineering

masterpiece and it belongs on the design podium.” The winner of the Compasso d’Oro Award will be announced in Milan in 2016.

Another Successful Ligna This year’s Ligna was held in Hanover, Germany May 11th – 15th and spanned the entire wood processing and woodworking industry. With a high level of International participation with more than 50% of the exhibitors coming from outside Germany. Ligna is so much more than a presentation platform for state-of-the-art machines and solutions for the wood processing and woodworking industries. Its vast supporting programme of special presentations and forums makes it the world’s number one networking, communication and information hub for the forestry and wood industries, bringing together industry professionals from around the world. Approximately 1,567 exhibitors showcased their products and services with a total of 96,000 visitors attending the fair, around 46,000 of which were from outside Germany. The next Ligna will be from 22nd – 26th May 2017 and will feature a revamped more visitor centric layout of themes.

Leading Precision with Seven Innovations Working to the maxim of 'Leading precision', Vollmer presented its enhanced portfolio at this year's LIGNA in Hanover, Germany. The Swabian company introduced the wood and sawmill industry to its new grinding and erosion machines for sharpening circular saws, band and gang saws, as well as rotary tools. Vollmer showcased a total of seven innovations to representatives from wood processing industries, building on its market position as a full-scope service provider in the timber industry.

not rely on the circular saw and its performance. Five of the seven new sharpening machines are designed for carbide-tipped circular saws. These are the CP 650 and CPF 650, together with the CHP, CHC and CHF presented at the start of 2015, each of which is available in 840 and 1300 versions. All sharpening machines come with the new Vollmer operating concept. This revolves around the use of a multi-function wheel that offers intuitive machine operation.

sharpening band and gang saws. Among other things, Vollmer showed its new CAG 200 sharpening machine for gang saws at the Ligna fair, as well as the CA 210 and CAF 310 sharpening machines or the GPA 200 stelliting machine. The Vollmer subsidiary Loroch from Mörlenbach rounded off the company's presence with the new EVOLUTION K850-M automatic saw blade sharpening machine which, thanks to four CNC-controlled axes of motion, allows sharpening, re-toothing and automatically chamfers HSS/CV circular saw blades.

Solid carbide or diamond-tipped rotary tools From the field of tool grinding, Vollmer presented its Vgrind 160 grinding machine for grinding solid carbide tools such as drills and milling cutters. Thanks to its two vertically arranged spindles, the Vgrind 160 enables multi-level machining for the first time ever. Vollmer also showed the QXD 250 eroding machine for PCD rotary tool manufacture in Hanover. LIGNA REVIEW

HOMAG Rocks LIGNA as Titan the Robot Steels the Show The buzz and enthusiasm at LIGNA 2015 could be felt everywhere you went. You could clearly sense it peak, however, on the HOMAG stand when ‘Titan the Robot’ was presenting the fully networked furniture production concept. The 2.5m tall man of steel presented the 100m long batch size 1 production process several times each day. The networked cell was not only the highlight of LIGNA, but also, as a fully automated, interlinked and networked cell, it was a world first at an exhibition. All the pre-show hype focused on ‘Industry 4.0 for furniture production’ and the HOMAG Group’s network production cell demonstrated how this concept is already being implemented worldwide by HOMAG customers. The idea behind ‘Industry 4.0’ is to produce customised furniture on an industrial scale, in the most efficient way and at a similar cost to that of mass production. With HOMAG’s networked production, machines know precisely where each component is required at a specific point in time, how the component is to be processed, what the quality standards are and where bottlenecks may occur in storage. For this to work, all components involved in the production process, including machines, units, handling and storage systems, independently communicate with one another via sensors and networks. Fully networked production delivers increased energy and resource efficiency, reduced time-to-market, more complex products, increased flexibility, customised

mass production, high productivity and increased competitiveness.

HOLZMA revolutionises the cutting process The new HOLZMA HPS 320 flexTec beam saw revolutionises cutting in orderbased production. With this intelligent cutting cell, HOLZMA has introduced a concept that completely redefines the parts flow in customised production and makes fully automated sequences a reality. This saves time and materials which in turn reduces costs. Thanks to its intelligent sequences, the HPS 320 flexTec is able to significantly reduce scrap in batch size 1 production. Previously, when performing manual recuts, the single parts were temporarily stored and repeatedly fed to the saw – a complex and time-consuming process. The HPS 320 flexTec completes multiple recuts fully automatically, flexibly and without any limits.

At the heart of the system is an industrial robot that takes over the task of handling parts and strips during the cutting process. The robot is highly versatile, fully automatic and considerably more efficient than

conventional solutions. The result is up to 1500 parts per shift from a user-friendly and easily maintained cutting cell. What is more, the HPS 320 flexTec can be connected to an automatic horizontal storage system from HOMAG Automation or integrated in an industrial production line, making it attractive to both the trade sector and industry. In terms of design, HOLZMA has adopted a radically new approach and is the first company to introduce a saw concept specifically devised for cutting single panels. This provides many benefits including a small footprint, high material yield, time and cost savings, and optimum energy and resource usage.

Attention-grabbing entry-level HPP 130 from HOLZMA Another big show-stopper from HOLZMA was the new entry-level HPP 130; an innovative and compact beam saw that comes equipped with everything that smaller manufacturers need for cutting single panels and small series. The HPP 130 costs little more than a well-specified circular saw whilst providing a much more precise and efficient cutting process. It also has a small footprint to fit neatly into most manufacturing facilities.

Homag Automation – from individual products to the interlinking of processes – the perfect logistical solution

numerous options, the new KAL 370 edgebanding machine offers a wide range of options for edge processing. The new models are based on the experience and feedback gained from selling over 1000 Ambition and KAL 310 machines. The new Ambition series offers even more options. Where previously a fully automated changeover from one profile to a chamfer was possible, on some models a fully automated changeover from two profiles and a chamfer is now possible. Customers can specify various equipment packages, such as for gluing solid wood strips of up to 20mm or for processing nesting parts, that offer the right solution for every application. All machines can be constructed with an empty slot for attaching a grooving or belt sanding unit. With the growing diversity of materials used in the furniture industry and rising cost pressures, manufacturers are looking for machines that offer economy and performance no matter what materials are used. The versatile KAL 370 profiLine delivers in spades. It has a robust design with a capability to process all types of material and consistently delivers first class edge quality.

HOMAG’s Venture BMG 300 CNC processing centre The Venture BMG 300 is considered the flagship of the Venture series machines and has been designed to provide manufacturers with the exact machine for their specific needs. Each customer follows a simple three step process to specify their bespoke solution. Firstly, the user selects the correct length for his Venture machine. If space is limited, the short length M is ideal; for larger manufacturers, the length goes up to XXL for processing parts up to 6m in length or for processing doors and high

cupboard side panels in shuttle operation. For clamping and setup, the table options range from a universal K table with various clamping systems and setup aids through to automatic positioning consoles for flexible window production. There is also the A table for automation in batch size 1 up to the R table which is ideal for nesting, processing shaped parts and many other applications. To complete the order the customer selects the trimming spindle, tool changer and drilling head on the gantry. Each machine can be configured flexibly for specific applications from basic through to multi-purpose with more drilling spindles for efficient panel processing, to highperformance panel processing.

Surface lamination – the new HOMAG FKF 200 series HOMAG’s new professional series FKF 200 comes with a range of new features set to transform the entry level machine, launched last year, into an automated solution. Surface laminating machine FKF 200 features a hot melt, PUR application roller making it capable of practically unmanned sheet lamination. A new infeed system is used to align and clean the sheet material (PMMA, HPL, etc.) without a feed stop before feeding it to the ready-glued work piece. This solution is also ideally suited for high-gloss processing of substrate material. Also new is the Profi FKF 200 with ‘reacTec’ nozzle application which uses the ‘completeLine’ method. In a single work stage, the wide and narrow surfaces are laminated with material off the coil and the narrow surface finish is completed at an integrated wrapping line and finish processing unit. The integrated double payoff station allows coil changeover without interruption, enabling continuous production and a high output. As a result, this ‘completeLine’ method which is popular in the industrial sector, is now economically viable for medium-sized enterprises.

210 and combines them with increased speed, enhanced panel handling precision and an enlarged transportable panel spectrum. The TLF 211 optimises transport routes and measurably reduces material and time consumption. Standard interfaces link the storage system with production machines to create a truly effective production process. No matter whether in the size of a double garage or up to the maximum 600m2, The TLF 211 will drastically improve the efficiency and productivity of any manufacturing facility. Another time and money saver from HOMAG Automation is the uprated VKS 230 cardboard-box cutting machine. Whether furniture is supplied for selfassembly with high value fronts or as a fully assembled, finished item, it must be packaged in the best possible way so that the customer receives it in perfect condition. The VKS 230 enables manufacturers to minimise packaging costs whilst maximising product protection. The QuickScan measuring device captures the items dimensions and transfers them to the VKS 230 which automatically cuts the cardboard to the correct dimensions. Equipped with a twofold endless cardboard changing system, the VKS 230 features a ‘side-by-side’ feeder where up to three track widths can be accessed individually. For flexibility, the system can accommodate continuous cardboard of varying track width and quality.

BHX 200 – WEEKE’s flexible powerhouse Since its introduction, WEEKE’s BHX vertical CNC drilling range has been immensely successful. To further enhance the versatility of the BHX 200 model WEEKE introduced some new options at LIGNA.

HOMAG Automation – Material management Successor to the ground breaking TLF 210 horizontal storage system, HOMAG’s new TLF 211 has been completely redesigned from the ground up. The new system takes all the strengths of the TLF

connector, and/or an additional threespindle drill head for applications such as drilling hinge holes in only one cycle. Completing the upgrades for the BHX 200 is the ‘dowel insertion’ option. The improvements offer users more flexibility and greater choice in a compact vertical CNC drilling machine with a footprint of less than 10m2 and a work piece processing capability of up to 3050 x 1250 x 80mm.

With an excellent price/efficiency ratio, the Highflex 1230 makes possible complete processing of work pieces, thanks to pneumatic adjustments of the pressure zone, end trimming unit, trimming and scrapping units. BRANDT now offers three airTec units in all models from the 1200 to the 1800 series. The AT

10 has an 8m/min feed speed, the AT 15 which delivers 15m/min and the AT 20 for industrial producers running at 20m/min. The show also saw the introduction of the new BRANDT KDF 650 edition edgebander which features an air-table at the machine in feed to facilitate easy handling of large and heavy parts. The machine has the option of a perfect zero joint airTec unit or a QA 45 unit for hot melt glue or PUR/EVA adhesive application via a glue roll. The KDF 650 has a multi-functional contour trimming unit for corner processing and, thanks to the servo motors, it is optimally suited for the processing of high-gloss surfaces or lightweight panels. First class finishing is guaranteed thanks to the multi-stage scraper, a radius scraper and a buffing unit. “LIGNA was a triumph for the HOMAG Group,” claims Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG UK. He concludes, “The 100m networked production cell, shown off to great effect by Titan the Robot, stole the show. It was, however, the sheer breadth and width of innovations and product advancements from all the brands in the Group that truly impressed. “There was a fantastic reaction from British visitors to the show and in particular to HOMAG City. This enthusiasm and interest has already translated into significant sales, new customers and broader awareness as to the scope of solutions available from HOMAG Group companies.” If you would like more information or a demonstration of the new HOMAG Group machinery and software, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

BRANDT – Setting new standards with perfect edges Whether for entry-level, medium-sized or demanding batch size 1 production, BRANDT has led the field in cost-effective, high quality edgebanding machines. The big news from the brand at this year’s show was the introduction of the airTec AT 10 unit which makes zero joint technology possible for the entry-level BRANDT 1200 series.

LIGNA REVIEW A Resounding Success for Kündig at Ligna Kündig sanders are renowned for the quality of finish they provide, particularly in sensitive applications such as high gloss finishing. And Kündig UK’s representatives were on hand on the Swiss parent company’s stand, ready to assist with enquiries. On display and ready to demonstrate, Kündig had some eight wide belt sanding machines of differing specification to cater for all aspects of calibration and surface finishing including: A selection of Brilliant machines where at least one of abrasives is placed to give a shear cut across the surface. • Machines for calibration and veneer sanding. • The new carousel brush machine for sanding both flat panels and panels which have been routed on the surface. • Lacquer and high gloss machines using both the Brilliant wide belt and cross belt with independent variable speed control. • Precision machines offering an accuracy of 0.01 mm. • Structure brush machines. • Top & bottom sanding machine for high volume manufacturers. • The machines displayed 650, 1100, 1350 and 1600mm working widths. Complimenting the wide belt sanding machines were a selection of the Uniq edge sanding machines for solid wood, veneered edges and also in lacquer sanding execution. Features from the Kündig wide-belt range popular with UK customers included the fact that the sanding head rises and lowers, not the workpiece; the automatic thickness measuring system; and the oblique sanding system, which, according to the company results in a significantly improved finish. Both the belt speed and the feed speed can be infinitely adjusted, as can stock removal rate and the depth of the machine’s opening. Once the perfect settings have been found, they can be automatically stored for easy recall. For demanding operations, such as lacquer and sealer sanding, these settings can be recalled and sent to the machine, while at the same time

being displayed on screen for verification. For those with special sanding requirements, the Technic range can provide a bespoke solution. Those created so far include top/ bottom sanding systems with two to six units; extra large machines for the panel industrial, with special machines for plywood and sanders with cutterheads; and machines for working with very thin material in the laminate industry. If you have a requirement that you feel cannot be met by a standard machine, have a word with Kündig: the solution may be closer than you think. The Uniq range of Kündig edge

Hofmann By Weinig – The New “Old Faithful” So many people learned their trade on famous British-made spindle moulders you would struggle to count them. The attractions were clear - immense stability, robust design and great flexibility meant the highest quality work could be produced on such machines. However, these machines needed one essential element - human skill. With the demise of the British manufactured machines, users were in a dilemma. Do they stick with what they have or do they buy a low quality, mass produced spindle moulder to replace the trusty workhorse? Not much of a choice really, with many users hanging on to “old faithfuls”. Now, the Hofmann spindles range, available exclusively through Weinig UK, is a genuine replacement. The Hofmann midrange spindle moulder TFS 1245 has been designed and built like the old traditional British machines with an immense planed cast-iron table, but engineered to modern tolerances providing unrivalled precision. The cast-iron spindle housing gives maximum stability and vibration absorption; the heavy duty bearings support

the spindle, and it is driven by a powerful 7.5 kW motor to IE2 standards with variable speed belt drive. Even at first glance, the TFS 1245 has an air of solidity about it, evidenced by the finest planed - not ground - finish to the large 815 by 1250 mm table, for which extensions to increase this to 2750 mm are available. The table is available with a sliding table plate, so no need for a multitude of insert rings. Its clever yet simple mechanical design is totally reliable and not dependent on complex electronics or control systems to make it work. Hofmann spindles are available with a wide variety of fence options starting with the Type 2601 providing central fast adjustment of the cast-iron jaws by a hand wheel according to a digital readout. Upgrade to the Type 2610 and you get a rock solid fence for heavy machining applications. Central adjustment according to an LED display and the ability to zero the fence to the tool make this unit a genuine pleasure to work with. The Type 2610 can also be equipped with CNC positioning. Modern controls and CNC technology do play a part in the Hofmann spindle

moulders so that repeatable accuracy can be achieved quicker that with traditional old faithful machines. The automatic control panel can include up to four axis via LED display and 99 program memory covering the height and tilt of the spindle in addition to the fence and support positions. This can be upgraded to the CNC Eco and Komfort systems providing touch screen control and a very straightforward menu system making it very user friendly and easy to use. The extensive range of options also include a heavy duty sliding table for producing tenon joints accurately, safely and quickly. This unit is beautifully engineered and well thought out for heavy use in the real world. For producers of timber windows, a set-up of a Weinig Cube four side planer, a TFS 1245 spindle with sliding table and a set of Leitz ThermoTech Window System tooling is hard to beat for efficiency, productivity and perfect results. Detail design to the TFS 1245 has also been carefully considered. solutions for every type of application, including an option for HSK tools, this machine becomes the real heart of any workshop producing quality joinery or mouldings. The TFS 1245 is just one machine in the Hofmann range that is characterised by quality German engineering at its best - but available for attractive prices. The range extends from the entry level TFS107 spindle right through to the highly advanced award-winning spindle UFM Vision which comes with top-of-the-range design and features. Hofmann also manufacture a range of robust planers and thicknessers targeted at users who understand and believe in quality machines to produce quality products, making Hofmann products the “old faithfuls” of the 21st Century.

Hofmann Launches New “Omnifact” Mortiser Designed to be universal and versatile, Hofmann’s new “OmiFact” mortiser (inspired by the Latin “omni facere”) is such an all-rounder it really can “do all” and make almost everything. Brought to the British market by leading wood processing and technology company Weinig UK, the new Hofmann slotted dowel milling machine type LB 770 “OmniFact” is exceptionally versatile. Its fixed or swivel drilling unit from 65° - 0° - 65° is in response to customers’ request, particularly from staircase manufacturers. The options for motor specifications for the Hofmann OmniFact also adds to its flexibility. The standard pole changing motor offers 2 drilling speeds 1,500/3,000 rpm with optional variable speed control from 900 to 3,000 rpm. The new mortiser can also be equipped with a high-speed motor running up to 23,000 rpm. Fitted with the ELA drill head equipment, the

machine is perfectly suited for the new generation 3D-Dubel connector system used in furniture production. The machine can also accommodate multiple spindle drill units. The OmniFact has a maximum drilling depth of 200 mm; the useable height range of each drilling head is 150 mm, and the horizontal adjustment is 416 mm. Throughout the development of the OmiFact mortiser, Hofmann has paid careful attention to detail. The machine can be moved with pallet truck or it can be equipped with swivel castors for ease of mobility around the workshop or production area. Hofmann’s proven fence and stop system can also be found on the OmniFact. The concept has been expanded to offer a plug-in system, which makes it possible to use Aigner extension tables and other equipment.

First SCM Accord WD Installed at Traditional Sash Windows Traditional Sash Windows, based in Guildford, Surrey, have been manufacturing, supplying and installing traditional sash and casement windows since 1999. During this time they have completed a large variety of installations, supplying over 50,000 replacement windows plus refurbishing existing sash windows. Traditional Sash Windows is very much a family business, started by Chairman Paul Kitching, and run by Matthew Lord, Managing Director, and Jamie Kitching, Director, with their close nit team they are responsible for the growth and day to day running of the business. As the business is flourishing and production volumes are increasing, at the beginning of 2014, it was decided to examine the purchase of a CNC Machining Centre, as their existing SCM Windor 20L, although still producing excellent window and door components, was not capable of grooving, bevelling and machining horns, draught excluding strips and security bolt locations. It was felt a CNC Machining Centre, with a 5-axis routing head, would machine all window and door components in one location on the CNC's table, avoiding loss of datum when moving components from

one machine to another, providing greater accuracy and a better machined finish. Therefore, a visit to SCM Group's CNC manufacturing unit in Rimini was arranged by SCM UK's Area Sales Manager, Mike Lee. A model Accord WD Cell was demonstrated that also includes an automatic component feeding and stacking facility. The Accord WD can be used for

production in batches and in single units without ever interrupting the work cycle and always feeding at the maximum speed. Also, it is easy and fast to use and also with manual loading to produce any type of component and therefore exploit all the potential of an SCM Machining Centre. The automatic component movement system and the worktable management ensure that the continuous presence of the operator is not necessary. The 5-axes machining unit, designed and constructed specifically for demanding jobs, is supported by a rigid mobile gantry-type structure for fast profiling of large section elements. The table / machining area is 6360 x 1905mm. The work cycle is never interrupted as while the machine is machining on one half-table the finished components are unloaded from the other one and new ones loaded. Machining special door and window frames or other types of products is extremely simple as the worktable can easily be accessed for manual loading and unloading. The powerful 13 KW, 5-axis Prisma T machining unit, designed and constructed specifically for demanding jobs, ensures profiling of large section elements with fast feed speeds. Cutting, routing and boring both vertically and horizontally, without needing the tool changer, using the 3 KW machining unit type BRC. Fast and precise for all accessory machining, and for making a door or window frame there is a single secondary unit using an independent Z axis and dedicated inverter. The twin spindle horizontal head can be used for door hinge and lock recessing. Includes a 2 spindle boring unit and a sawblade unit. Matic is the fully automatic worktable ideal for machining solid wood. Complete set-up in seconds, all bars and supports moving simultaneously, each driven by an independent motor. The many technical devices give this table lasting safety and reliability. It is perfect for machining pre-finished / finished door and window frames, all supports having cleaning blowers which remove all shavings from the sliding zone and on the component hold down base during changes of the clamps. table, the right robot arm receives the next components from the rear roller conveyor and deposits them on to the right side of the CNC's table. Once the program is finished, the left robot arm unloads the machined components from the left table and deposits them on to the unloading buffer (lower table). The cycle is completed by unloading the components from the right CNC table while the CNC continues to machine the next components on the left table. Several components, of different length, can be positioned on the loading buffer. When the operator loads the component, its dimensions (length, width, thickness) are checked with by an optical sensor. For

increased productivity, two components can always be machined at the same time on the CNC's half-table. Short components are loaded automatically and clamped with a single clamp. The handling units are positioned with NC controlled axes. The clamping devices are positioned automatically, according to the length and width of the components. Maestro WD parametric software developed by the SCM Group to design and produce door and window frames on machining centres. It supports the design requirements of the most common types and geometric shapes of door and window frames, both linear and curved. A simple and intuitive graphic interface guides the user through every step of the project all the way to creating the machine programs. Paul Kitching concludes "We are very pleased with the SCM Accord WD and can see the benefits of the machine, especially the quality of the finished components and the machining of rounded edges. At the moment we are set up for sash window production and eventually we will move on to door production." The rail arm of iLECSYS is pioneering the use of composite materials on our railways from disconnection boxes to platforms and walkways. iLECSYS has been instrumental in offering new ideas to Network Rail and seeing this through to the design, prototyping and manufacture of the products. Many of the products that iLECSYS have designed now have PAD's approval. As an independent company, iLECSYS have the widest range of enclosures available in the country from small plastic junction boxes to floor standing enclosures in all types of materials. Over 50% of enclosures sold are customised by the company, whether that be for a few threaded holes or more complicated

machining such as rebates and cut-outs for special connectors.

When looking at a suitable CNC machine diversity and capacity were key. Alex Dalton of Daltons Wadkin visited the manufacturing site in Tring to discuss the requirements. 'To cope with the range of GRP material being processed including structural profiles and electrical cabinets I recommended the Kimla BPF model. The Kimla range of CNC machines can be tailored to meet almost any requirement. In this instance a large capacity machine with a working area of 2.1m x 3.1m was specified with an increased 700mm Z axis. Complete with 4th axis movement for aggregate heads it made the ideal solution for iLECSYS' comments Alex. Daltons Wadkin handled all aspects of the project providing a turnkey installation including training, specialist tooling and a dedicated dust extraction system. Grace Tipson, founder and Managing Director of iLECSYS, comments 'Other CNC suppliers seemed unable to cater for the capacity of machine we required. The Kimla has proved a valuable addition to our manufacturing capability and we are exploiting it in ways we had not imagined. Daltons Wadkin have delivered on their continued commitment to support and service.' For more information: Tel: 0115 986 5201 Email: info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com

INSTALLATION BSW Timber Upgrades to Automatic Crosscutting with Salvador speed of 180 m/min while maintaining a cutting accuracy of +/- 0.5mm. The cutting speed can be regulated as on the standard SuperPush between 0.2 - 2 seconds. Salvador also offer a range of outfeed options and in this instance the machine was adapted to feed directly into the Stenner Multi-Head Resaw line for continual production. Andy Walsh comments: 'Our sales of Salvador crosscuts have double year on year since 2011. The customer base is diverse including sofa and bed manufacturers, pallet and case manufactures, saw mills and window producers, but in each case the customer is a looking for the same thing to exploit the latest equipment technology to reduce overheads and waste, increase productivity, quality and safety - to Machine Smarter. The Salvador delivers every time'. To minimise any impact on production at the Newbridge Sawmill Daltons Wadkin carried out a turnkey weekend installation.

BSW Timber Newbridge Sawmill is located on a 10 hectare site in the heart of Wales. The mill operates on a treble shift pattern with an annual production of around 150,000 cubic metres of sawn timber. With a continual policy of safety and efficiency improvements BSW's John Smillie contacted Daltons Wadkin to update the existing Wadkin CW Hydraulic Crosscut Saw. The CW, used to cut to length prior to feeding into a Stenner MHS9 Multi-Head Horizontal Resaw line, had served the company well but was labour intensive and ultimately struggled to keep pace with the Stenner. On a visit to inspect the production line Andy Walsh, Sales Director at Daltons Wadkin, took no hesitation in recommending the Salvador SuperPush 200 FAST Automatic Optimising Crosscut Saw. The FAST option doubles the pusher speed to 120 m/min with a material read

be fine’ says Robert. CNC operator Steve is delighted with the H20 and stated how ‘exceptionally accurate’ it is. He went on to say that the H20 is very tidy and crisp and ‘the precision is unreal’. Before Felder Robert Charles Kitchens we were hand drilling and had a lengthy manufacturing process, but they can now meet any radius of a curve. ‘It is a fashion

item now to have curves in kitchens and the standardised curve facility on the H20 is great’ says Robert. Curved components are something we are able to offer with precision and ‘our handheld edgebander is a real bonus too’. ‘When customers come to our workshop they are able to see their kitchens in production and they are fascinated that we make everything in this space’. With ‘fantastic and affordable’ machines, Robert cannot speak more highly of Felder and what he has been able to achieve. ‘We are innovative and offer quality because of our machinery. We are able to make a better product due to the accuracy, repeatability and very small wastage factor. With the right machines for the right jobs, Felder has enabled us to be versatile and the quality speaks for itself’.

Latest Innovation from Egger Makes ‘Perfectsense’ Two new products from EGGER give furniture manufacturers the opportunity to reflect the continuing popularity of high gloss, and the emerging trend of velvet matt surfaces, seen in premium kitchens – but at a realistic price. Thanks to a revolutionary UV coating process, its new PerfectSense Gloss and PerfectSense Matt boards provide a particularly hardwearing surface with an up-market look and feel. Pre-launched at the Interzum show in Cologne, and available from September, they will be produced on a brand new line in Germany and have a core of super-smooth MDF. “The gloss boards offer a combination of a real mirror finish with a tough, smooth and flawless surface – something of a novelty in this product area,” said Elliott Fairlie, EGGER UK’s head of décor development. “By using a special coating process with UV technology, we believe we have elevated our products into an area of the market previously reserved for only a few high-end surfaces. “We have seen many kitchen manufacturers featuring high-gloss frontals in recent times, and it’s a look that customers are continuing to adopt. With EGGER’s PerfectSense Gloss you not only get the desired look, you also get a board that is strong in the fabrication process and suitable for heavier-use applications – being particularly scratch-resistant and robust.” EGGER’s new UV coating process gives its second new product – PerfectSense Matt – unique properties of its own, making it highly resistant to fingerprints. The warm, soft look also gives it an upmarket feel that is gaining in popularity. Both products are offered alongside standard structures in matching colours for carcassing, to create a co-ordinated look, and matching edging is also available. The dimensions are 2800 x 2070mm with a thickness of 18mm. Elliott Fairlie added: “Gloss in itself is not new, but with PerfectSense we believe we have raised the bar in terms of durability and the sheer depth of the shine – which responds to the high demand from end-users. “But Matt is also gaining in popularity. Matt surfaces have long been associated with high value and predominantly used in premium-end furniture production. This has made it much more desirable and the superior quality differentiates it from other matt furniture surfaces – particularly when used as a contrast to our new high gloss product.” PerfectSense Matt decors carry on the current “Glory of Grey” theme, with two cooler shades of grey included – U708 PM Light Grey

and U732 PM Dust Grey – as well as two warmer grey shades, U702 PM Cashmere and U727 Stone Grey. Besides the prevailing classic white, black is also celebrating its comeback on the matt surface – showcasing high quality at its best. The no-fingerprint functionality can be seen particularly well on the U999 PM Black. PerfectSense Gloss decors are based on current trends and the range will comprise a collection of popular solid colours and an exotic woodgrain. Premium Surface Technology Now Available at Lathams The innovative and highly textured range of premium, Thermo Structured Surface (TSS) decors - XyloCleaf - which offers a variety of wood grains, linens and other unique materials - is now available through James Latham. Unlike anything else on the UK market, XyloCleaf is a highly original and exclusive range of decors which are created using a unique process of thermal fusing in which decorative papers are treated with melamine resins, that under heat and pressure become part of the panel itself, hence the term Thermo Structured Surface. This process provides not only a stunning end result, but also a product that is strong, durable and highly scratch and chemical resistant, meaning that as well as looking great, it will stand up to the toughest of challenges when used in high traffic areas. The sensational and inspiring new XyloCleaf collection is perfectly suited to premium domestic design schemes such as kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms as well as for wall panelling and furniture and it has already proved particularly popular within high end commercial, leisure and hotel specifications. The deep textures and intricate detail of XyloCleaf makes it difficult to distinguish from the real material it is designed to mimic and the portfolio includes 50 different colours and patterns, all of which come with ABS edging as standard. Paul Morson, James Latham’s Group Product Champion for Melamine said, ”XyloCleaf represents a new generation of panel product and one which offers extraordinary potential, delivering a complete solution of innovative products to suit all interior decorative tastes, trends and applications. I have no doubt at all that it will become a big success for us.” XyloCleaf is available nationwide and directly from stock through James Latham and is supplied in panel sizes of 2800 x 2070 x 18mm.

dp-BioCote Quartz Used in the World’s First Antimicrobial Classroom dp-BioCote Quartz has been established within the dp-décor portfolio of products for some months now. This revolutionary sheet material is currently available in six decors – three popular woodgrains, Beech, Oak, and Maple and thee solid colours, White, Ivory, and Pale Grey. As well as offering high resistance to abrasion, far exceeding the abrasion resistance of high pressure worktops, one of the most significant properties of the material is the inclusion of the antibacterial additive from BioCote that gives up to a 99.9% germ free surface*. The product is becoming popular within a wide range of market sectors that can gain benefits from such properties but to gain first hand real time data the world’s first ever antimicrobrial classroom has been created at a primary school in the UK, resulting in huge reductions in levels of bacteria. Working in conjunction with BioCote Ltd and other users of BioCote® technology Decorative Panels have used the dp-BioCote Quartz product to create the classroom that actively inhibits the growth of harmful microbes. dp-BioCote Quartz sheet material and edgebanding was used to manufacture computer desks, work tables, and bookcases for the classroom. All other fixtures and fittings were provided by other BioCote® partners to create a safer, more hygienic learning environment. Levels of bacteria were measured over a period of time on the surfaces of products. Simultaneously, data was collected from comparable but untreated items in another classroom. Comparison of the levels of bacteria in these two classrooms revealed a dramatic difference. Initial findings were impressive – the antimicrobial products in the protected classroom were shown to be over 95.68% less contaminated with bacteria than the corresponding items in the unprotected classroom. With Government guidelines recommending schools prevent the

spread of infections by maintaining a clean environment it is easily seen how BioCote® treated products can contribute enormously to this aim. The study will continue throughout the academic year and further data will be collected by the BioCote® team with the aim of understanding if levels of contamination vary due to seasonality, the identity of the microbes recovered and what potential antimicrobial technology has for reducing absenteeism due to sickness. dp-BioCote Quartz is a sheet material that has much to offer over an array of market areas. The potential for cleaner safer environments from furniture manufacturer from a traditional sheet material is now a reality. Evola Collection Conquers Interior Decorating World Following a prominently acclaimed introduction at Interzum, UNILIN, division panels, can now boast an outstanding customer reference for its revamped and expanded Evola collection. Oostrozebeke, 18 May 2015 – UNILIN, division panels, an international specialist in innovative wood solutions for the construction and interior decorating markets, can take pride in its first successfully completed project featuring its revamped Evola collection, following its successful introduction at the world’s most prominent furniture industry trade fair. Dutch hotel and restaurant chain Van der Valk selected the laminate variant of the Evola collection, which imitates the original materials down to the smallest details, for the refurbishment of a hotel in Akersloot (the Netherlands).

Interzum attracts unprecedented visitor numbers Interzum is the Biennial trade fair par excellence for the furniture industry. Over 50,000 visitors from all corners of the globe flocked to the Koelnmesse in Cologne between 5 and 8 May. Countless visitors stopped at the UNILIN, division panels stand for an introduction to the updated Evola collection. The Evola collection captures trends in interior decorating by paying attention to even the smallest details. The designs meticulously imitate every single feature of the original materials. UNILIN not only expanded its existing range of wood designs, but also extended it with eight different solid colours in addition to a line of highly realistic-looking metallic and concrete designs.

Synchronous surface textures, even in laminate The greatest advantage offered by the revamped collection is without a doubt that UNILIN now offers synchronous surface textures — which until now could only be produced on melaminefaced board — on laminate. Each design also has matching edgebanding. The result is a sustainable, ecologically-friendly, low-maintenance and affordable product that can be installed quickly and easily for use in a diverse range of interior and furniture applications. Additionally, the entire line is produced inhouse by UNILIN.

First project delivered con brio Dutch hotel and restaurant chain Van der Valk pounced on the opportunity to use the new Evola collection in the refurbishment of its hotel in Akersloot (the Netherlands). Van der Valk was instantly

drawn to the natural-looking Heritage Oak Light design and the realistic surface textures of the panels. Of course, low maintenance was also an essential aspect in prompting the chain’s decision to incorporate the Evola collection into the hotel’s new

furniture. Blok Plaatmateriaal created wardrobes, bedside tables, desks and coffee tables for Van der Valk from melamine-faced Evola panels. The laminate variant was also used for the tops of the coffee tables – an absolute first for UNILIN. Not only has this project put a big feather in UNILIN, division panels’ cap, but Van der Valk is also over the moon with the result. UNILIN, division panels is part of the UNILIN Group. Since we were established in 1960, we have grown to become an international player offering solutions for the construction, furniture and interiors sectors. UNILIN is synonymous with (r)evolution. Interior Film Provides Refurbishment Solution For Dunkin Donuts Dunkin Donuts is one of the world’s leading baked goods and coffee chains with over 10,000 stores worldwide –many of them operated on a franchise basis. Their store in Cambridge was recently refurbished by specialists Pro AV Direct who used Interior Film from David Clouting to refurbish the walls in the public seating area which had become damaged and scuffed. Terry Hayden, Managing Director of Pro AV Direct explains why he choose Interior Film “I originally considered panelling the walls but as I had previously used Interior Film on another project I knew it was a great way to get a nice-looking finish, quickly and easily which were important factors given the nature of their business” David Clouting provided Pro AV Direct with a range of designs samples of Interior Film to show Dunkin Donuts who selected ‘Pine Cube’ for the high wear wall areas. “Interior Film is very easy to use,” says Terry Hayden. “It comes in a roll or you can buy it by the linear metre, simply cut it, peel off the backing and smooth it onto the surface. It’s self-adhesive but because the adhesive remains tacky, it’s easy to reposition if need be. It’s similar to applying wallpaper but without all the mess and the problem of smoothing out lots of air bubbles.” Interior Film, manufactured by LG Hausys is so versatile and can be adhered to most substrates including: wood, metals, plaster

board, plastics and melamine. It is CE Certificated so can be specified with confidence. Available in a range of designs and finishes including: Exotic woods, Leather effect, textured metals and Natural stone, Interior Film is part of a wide range of innovative interior surface products offered by David Clouting Ltd.

CASE STUDY HOMAG UK Sees Uplift In Demand for Cefla Automated Finishing Solutions HOMAG UK has been the exclusive distributor in the UK for Cefla products for many years. The partnership was developed because like HOMAG, the Cefla Finishing Group is the world leader in its field. “The partnership between the companies is a perfect match,” claims Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG UK. He continues, “The HOMAG Group is extremely proud of its position as the world leader in the woodworking industry and therefore does not enter lightly into agreements with other companies unless their business ethos matches that of the Group. “Cefla has emerged as the world leader in automated paint and finishing equipment, making it an ideal partner. Now, with the increasing move towards automation even in small manufacturing facilities, we are experiencing increased demand for Cefla solutions.”

options? Essentially, there are three main methods for automated finishing: spraying, roller coating and curtain coating.

Spraying machines Automation: Driving your business forward Automated finishing is a step up from manual solutions, offering a consistent, higher quality finish. Manual finishing has several drawbacks; firstly, no matter how diligent skilled craftsmen may be, as humans, they tend to tire as the working day or night progresses. This can lead to inconsistencies in quality. Secondly, the use of materials cannot be optimised because of the inconsistencies of the operators and finally, manual finishing will never achieve the output levels an automated system can deliver. These vital factors are encouraging more and more manufacturers to invest in automated finishing systems. So what are the

Simon Brooks again, “The spraying and coating machines designed by Cefla offer a wide range of production solutions. In the small to medium-sized category, the machines feature one or two spray arms and assure high quality coating of items. They deliver increased productivity and excellent coating product savings, handling everything from wood to plastic, glass, glue, metal, fibre cement and composite materials. “The entry-level Cefla Prima is engineered to make the switch from manual to automatic spraying an easy one. It’s highly userfriendly, reliable and cost-effective to buy and maintain. Suitable for any water- or solventbased coating, it increases productivity, reduces waste and improves finish quality

and consistency. Prima offers a working width of 1300mm, so productivity is much higher than manual spray booths and narrower automatic systems. “The PRIMA gives consistent panel face/edge coating and provides an excellent surface finish that would normally be associated with higher specified models. Prima is the ideal machine for companies wishing to make the most of the advantages offered by automated spraying, namely increased productivity, coating product saving and consistent panel finishing quality.”

Cefla Prima delivers for Anthony Mullan Furniture Once the Cefla was installed the impact was immediate,” claims Anthony Mullan, founder of Anthony Mullan Furniture. He continues, “We were able to reduce the number of skilled sprayers down to one with no negative effects on output. With the Cefla

The CEFLA Prima automated paint spray machine

Prima, anybody can use it and more importantly, the consistency of the output is fantastic; every product is finished to a superb standard, with no visible variance. “Speed is another major benefit. The machine eats up the work and because we are now using PU paint, the drying time is dramatically reduced so we can paint one side and then within two or three hours paint the other side. This means our turnaround is a lot quicker and yet our consistency remains top notch.”

iGiottoApp The latest machine from Cefla is the highly impressive iGiottoApp, a six-axis robotic sprayer for panels and 3D objects. The iGiotto combines cutting-edge coating technology with an easily programmable, highperformance application system for nearly any part or component up to 3.0m x 1.3m. It is a high precision machine that delivers exceptionally low coatings use combined with high productivity. Utilising state-of-the-art scanning technology, it assures application speed, accuracy and consistency day-in, dayout. The need for scheduled maintenance has been minimised thanks to automatic

nozzle-cleaning and the iGiottoApp can also be networked for remote diagnostics assistance if needed. The iGiottoApp offers versatility and delivers outstanding application consistency and repeatability as Tom Wright, a director at George Barnsdale & Sons Ltd explains: “We needed a new spray line so we had to decide between a manual and a robotic solution. We chose the automated system for its consistency and high throughput. “We manufacture bespoke timber window frames which come in all sorts of odd shapes and sizes. Manual spraying was an extremely time consuming business, now with the iGiottoApp we get high volume throughput with a consistent quality finish.” The iGiottoApp takes images of the pieces as they enter the spraying zone via an ultramodern 3D scanner that is synchronised with the product feed. This enables it to precisely coat each entire work piece.

Roller and curtain coaters The Cefla Finishing Group also offers several types of roller coaters to uniformly and evenly apply coating products and enamels on wooden, glass, plastic and fibre cement panels. All the machines stand out for their

versatility, ease of use and reliability. Curtain coating machines are ideal to evenly coat 3D or shaped work pieces. Paint, water or solvent-based, ‘rains’ down from the top of the machine as the work pieces pass through. The machines offer outstanding performance and excellent reliability. Curtain coaters are able to apply any type of coating product on pieces with working widths of up to 2500mm.

Preparation – the key to a first class finish Simon Brooks concludes, “Of course, obtaining the best possible finish requires that the products are prepared correctly. FINISHING Maxfield Jarvis Benefit from Gallito Spray Finishing Facility Spray booth and drying systems specialists, Gallito Ltd., have recently completed a dry filter spray booth installation for leading retail shopfitters, Maxfield Jarvis Ltd. Maxfield Jarvis are new generation fit-out specialists who fully manage and execute individual or multiple projects for a growing number of top high street names. Delivering a complete design, manufacturing, installation and refitting service, the company prides itself on its ability to provide the highest standard of service and craftsmanship. Established in 1999, by present directors Danny Maxfield and Michael Jarvis, the company operates from a modern 22,000 sq ft design and manufacturing centre near Loughborough, Leicestershire. Having traditionally contracted out the spray painting of components, the company recently decided to look at bringing this capability in house. “Our clients demand a pristine spray finish, with substantial resistance to chipping and scratching” says Michael Jarvis, “and an increase in demand for bespoke painted units led us to consider setting up our own spray shop.” While visiting last year’s W14 exhibition, Michael Jarvis and Danny Maxfield were able to see Gallito spray booths on display

High quality spray painted components feature in many Maxfield Jarvis projects

and discuss their requirements with Gallito sales engineers. Following the show, Gallito were invited to complete a site survey before putting forward a proposal for the installation of a Dry Filter Spray Enclosure, to be sited on the mezzanine floor of the Maxfield Jarvis factory. The project involved the design, supply and installation of a 4m wide dry filter spray booth, together with a 6m x 6m enclosure. The booth and enclosure are manufactured from galvanised folded panels and the enclosure includes filtered

air inlet panels in the front walls. A doublehinged component access door and a single personnel access door are included along with integral lighting. Two 1m square air inlet louvres were installed to allow air from outside to enter the building to replace the air being exhausted to atmosphere. Michael Jarvis adds: “We were delighted with the way in which Gallito handled the project, and their installation team did a great job. We now have a first class inhouse spray shop which means we can supervise and monitor the whole finishing process of spray painted products.”

PROFILE Making Wood Work More Dramatically with AXYZ Routing Technology To an increasing extent, routing solutions provided by AXYZ International are enabling the creation of a host of special effects and complex shapes using a variety of solid woods to be achieved. These are used across a broad range of applications, from architectural signage to ornate furniture and specially designed wooden constructions for boatbuilding as well as those used in theatrical, scenic, exhibition and outdoor event locations. For example, there is nothing to beat the aesthetic appeal of signs made from natural wood, with their unique ability to convey a sense of infinite reliability, durability and environmental awareness. A company that has built a global reputation for the quality of its three-dimensional signs made from cedar wood is Cornwall-based The Grain. Central to the success of these signs that have an incomparable handcrafted appearance has been a Pacer 25/15 HDS Pacer router supplied by AXYZ International. Developed for high-speed routing, the machine is particularly suited to the continuous production of two- and three-dimensional output using a broad range of materials. These include solid and composite woods, aluminium and aluminium composites (ACM), stainless steel, brass and acrylic. In addition to its renowned cedar wood sandblasted signs, The Grain has used the Pacer router for a wide variety of associated three-dimensional work as well as for heavy-duty routing tasks requiring a high degree of accuracy, quality of finish and fast throughput. Routing technology from AXYZ International was also a key factor in the success of Cornish boat builder Cornish Crabbers. The router supplied has been employed primarily for the manufacture of wooden components installed in its classic style sailing boats and yachts. These include interior wood-based furnishings and the wooden framework for the sailing craft. A spokesperson at Cornish Crabbers commented: “Hitherto, all of this work

40 Panel & Joinery Production MAY/JUNE 2015

would have been cut out by hand and require at least three and a half days to complete. Knowing that the router supplied by AXYZ International would cut all curves precisely with a perfect finish has enabled a much higher degree of accuracy and much shorter time scale than was previously possible.” Another successful AXYZ router owner has been Cardiff Theatrical Services. On behalf of the Welsh National Opera, the company builds theatrical scenery using primarily wood for complex-shaped components fixed to timber or steel frames.

General Manager at Cardiff Theatrical Services, Darren Joyce commented: “We chose the AXYZ 4010 router because it ticked all the boxes in our ‘must have’ list of requirements and because it provided the right level of production capability but at a price point with which we felt comfortable.”

The May Design Series is the most commercially focused interiors trade event in the UK Calendar. On the 17th to the 19th May, BA Components took to the London ExCel to exhibit at this much-anticipated event. BA Components theme for the show was their 25 years in business. ‘25 years in the BAking’ was aptly branded across the stand and to complement this, BA were giving out their very own branded cookies to visitors. Not forgetting what a long day exhibiting can be, BA brought their very own energy drink for their visitors. Customers old and new descended on the stand to see BA’s new Glidor sliding door range, which was on display in the Ultragloss Copperleaf and Ultragloss Limestone. Needless to say, it caught quiet a few eyes with its distinct look. This product was launched in February of this year and has seen huge success and popularity.

PROFILE Blum’s Product Innovations at Interzum 2015 Interzum remains the undoubted international showcase for suppliers to the furniture industry – from fittings and components, surfacings and boards, software advances and so much more. For world leading fittings manufacturer Blum, Interzum has always been a vehicle for introducing the latest (often revolutionary) innovations to the market. Very often these have been greeted with a good degree of scepticism and even comments like” the industry doesn’t need that” or “it will never catch on”. On each occasion the far-sightedness of Blum designers, planners and engineers have proved the doubters wrong and every ground breaking innovation since the CLIP hinge in 1985, metal-sided drawers and so on are now very much the industry norm. This has been based on Blum’s innate understanding of which way the market will head and how changes in lifestyle will change demand. At Interzum in 2015 this tradition once again held true. Innovative fittings solutions support the trend towards handle-less furniture; Blum made the most of this trend which is unmistakable. Handle-less fronts are still very much in vogue. Blum presented its product ideas to visitors from all over the world, at this great exhibition which was held in Cologne from 5 to 8 May 2015. The company will

displayed sophisticated innovations that bring enhanced user convenience to the entire home (in particular to kitchens) as well as optimised models of tried and tested fittings solutions. Blum has exhibited inspiring fittings solutions for wall cabinets and base units to support the ongoing trend towards handle-less furniture. Two Blum highlights at Interzum 2015: • Tip-On Blumotion – a fitting that combines one-touch opening with soft and effortless closing. Handle-less pullouts and drawers open with ease thanks to the mechanical opening support system and close again with a feather-

light glide. Tried and tested soft-close Blumotion guarantees soft and effortless closing. Tip-On Blumotion offers top quality motion for furniture throughout the home. (Tip-ON Blumotion for Blum’s flagship Legrabox drawer has just won the coveted iF Product Design Award). • Servo-Drive flex – Blum’s electrical motion support system for standard built-in refrigerators and freezers with handle-less fronts. The fitting opens appliances at a single touch. With appropriate planning, it can also be used for dishwashers. Servo-Drive flex is just one of three sophisticated individual applications that were presented at interzum 2015 in Cologne. For Blum, interzum is an international trendsetting fair for the furniture industry and therefore a permanent fixture on the tradeshow calendar. The company’s international sales team made the most of the four-day event in Cologne to present its new products to experts and use the opportunity to further consolidate Blum’s position as a market leader in the fittings industry. SOFTWARE Delegates Learn Cabinet Vision’s Flagship Updates Cabinet Vision users say a number of seminars around the UK have been invaluable in showing them how to use the flagship new functions in what is described as the “biggest ever” update of the software. With over 100 items of new and enhanced functionality in Cabinet Vision V9, Senior Support Engineer Dave Roberts says woodworking companies can now take their business to the next level. “Cabinet Vision is now a very different piece of software, as users can put models into the system and operations into materials, for the first time, all of which can be shown graphically. This is one of the biggest releases ever, and, as such, we planned these seminars to show customers how to use the new features, so they can get the very best from their software investment.” A point echoed by designer Ruth Lovelock, who attended a seminar with two of her colleagues from bespoke furniture

and architectural joinery company Hetherington Newman. “We can see today how to utilise the new functionality to make our lives easier and work more efficiently.” Once a survey has been completed, and after establishing the kitchen design from an empty floor plan, they add the cabinets into Cabinet Vision. For sole trader Glyn Burgreave, the software’s powerful rendering feature is a vital part of his sales process. “While flat drawings of elevations are important, customers love seeing a 3D image of how their cabinets will look in situ. The better the render, the greater chance I’ll get the job. It gives a real Wow factor.” Dave Roberts explained to delegates how to import 3D Sketchup and 3D DXF models. “This gives the functionality to apply all the associated operations to the model and provide accurate visuals to complement the already accurate machining data. “V9 also sees a major improvement to

the material database, giving greater flexibility in organising materials. Woodworkers can now create material categories and sub categories, and carry out quick material searches. The improved user interface is more in line with Windows Explorer, making it easier to manage and maintain the material database.” Delegates also learned how to generate faster reports, thanks to the Integrated Reporting Engine, which has replaced the standard version along with understanding 43 new bid methods; how a New Connect Tool creates a 0” fillet; how the CAM editor can reverse toolpaths on operations such as circles, arcs and lines; and a new utility for defining moulding profiles.

The Latest HOMAG Ambition Range Sets New Heights for Edgebanders When it comes to comprehensive equipment offered as standard, HOMAG’s latest Ambition edgebander series is in a class of its own. Each model features a steel top pressure guide for precision work piece guidance; all trimming tools come complete with HOMAG’s I-system for optimum chip disposal and processing quality and, for high productivity, the machines offer variable feed speeds of 16-20 m/min, 16-25 m/min and 16-30 m/min. In addition, all the models in the Ambition range come with a free space so they can be extended with optional processing units such as grooving or belt sanding. “Since last autumn‘s launch of the new

Ambition range at HOMAG’s Treff in Germany, there has been considerable interest in the new machines here in the UK,” claims Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of HOMAG UK. He continues, “We have seen particular attention paid to the new Ambition 2274. This model offers high-grade gluing of edges, with a PU option, and has precise snipping and finish processing. “A great deal of thought has been put into ensuring the new Ambition machines are as productive and efficient as possible. For example, the processing heads at the profile trimming unit and profile scraper blade are quick and easy to change for work with different profiles. The Ambition 2274 has three variable feed speed performance

categories which are steplessly adjustable for high productivity. As a consequence of all the improvements, the machine has an unbelievable cost-to- performance ratio.”

Early Adopter Bridec Dorset based melamine faced board manufacturer, Bridec, was one of the first UK companies to acquire a new Ambition 2274. Director, Alastair Pollard explains, “Our old HOMAG edgebander was getting a bit long in the tooth. It had served us well for nearly 12 years, but we wanted to take advantage of the latest technological advances and so we decided to invest in the new HOMAG Ambition 2274. “Naturally we evaluated several brands on

The HOMAG Ambition 2274 complete with trimming tools for high quality and productivity

the market, but none of them was able to offer the specification and quality at the price of the HOMAG machine. And, as our previous HOMAG edgebander had consistently performed to a very high level, it was an easy decision to opt for the Ambition. “We process high volumes of 2mm and 0.4mm PVC and ABS edging through the machine and added a HOMAG panel return system to the edgebander to further improve productivity. As we expected, the Ambition has proved to be very reliable, very German – it doesn’t breakdown and that consistent performance level is very important to our business. “The big difference dealing with HOMAG is the confidence it gives you. Confidence in the machine, confidence in the engineers and confidence in the support from both the UK and from Germany,” concludes Alastair Pollard.

Energy efficient and versatile The HOMAG Ambition models are energy-saving and environmentally friendly. The I-system controlled chip capture means that chips are extracted and selectively directed to the extraction hood. This results in a reduced extraction speed which drives down energy consumption and costs. Greater economy and a longer service life are also achieved due to reduced wear and lower service costs.

On the Ambition 2274, an EVA premelting unit comes as standard. The heated glue roller ensures an optimum gluing temperature. The gluing unit can also be specified with a PUR pre-melting unit, allowing the rapid changeover between two different colours or PU. Also, to enable different edge heights to be processed with a consistent work piece thickness, the magazine height can be adjusted. For further flexibility, the airTec invisible joint technology can be specified or retro-fitted as required.

Snipping units – the perfect preparation for trimming The snipping units prepare the work pieces for subsequent trimming. The face side can be snipped either straight or with a chamfer. In terms of trimming, there are a number of options from the rough trimming unit through to the four-motor profile trimming unit for corner rounding. The trimming units are equipped exclusively with I-tools. This and the HOMAG-patented hollow shaft taper (HSK) interface which ensures a positive locking connection between the tool and motor shaft, guarantees a high standard of processing quality and a long tool life. For rounded edges, the dual-motor profile trimming units permit both corner rounding and trimming of upper and lower projecting edges and can be programmed to

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

corner round one - four corners as required. To give the edges a showroom finish, the machines have a profile scraper for smoothing trimmed edges and a glue joint scraper unit for disposal of glue residues at the top and bottom of plastic edges. The finishing touches are completed with the buffing unit which polishes up the edges.

powerTouch – the innovative control system As with all HOMAG Group machines, the new Ambition range provides simple operation with reliable control via the new wide-screen HD multi-touch monitor. Driven by powerTouch, HOMAG’s innovative control system, the machines are easy and intuitive to use. Modern software modules supply information on the machine status at a glance and integrated help and assistance functions result in greater productivity. INSTALLATION Kimla CNC Router Expands Machining Capability at T. Brewer The addition of a Kimla CNC expands T. Brewer's already impressive in house machining facility to further ensure their product consistency and high quality is upheld. The move into CNC machining was prompted by the specific demands of a large rail industry customer requiring significant volumes of specialist components. Brewer director Keith Fryer enthused, ‘The machine became viable from the moment that installation was complete; we’re only into the first 6 months of being able to offer CNC machining and we have seen a great deal of interest from a wide range of new and existing customers who are looking for a reliable service.’ T. Brewer’s have been supplying timber throughout London and the Home Counties since 1888. Wide membership and active involvement of trade organisations, as well as investment in up-

to-date technology ensures that technical and product assistance is provided to its customers Andy Walsh, Sales Director at Daltons Wadkin, worked with T. Brewer to ensure the specification accommodated not only their current production requirements but was future proofed as far as practically possible to meet the potential demand as the service expanded. 'We have supplied Brewers with a number of machines over the years, each time striving to provide only the very best equipment in terms of quality and capability', comments Andy. 'The Kimla range of CNC machines meets that criteria and I had no hesitation in its recommendation'. A high powered 12 kW water cooled spindle, 10 x 5' working area, 500mm Z axis and 10 position tool changer formed the basis of the specification. Features often offered as options by other manufactures

are included as standard with the Kimla including real-time Ethernet digital AC servo drives, high precision hardened helical rack and pinion drive, stand alone dedicated operator console with industrial PC to name but a few. 'We had no experience with CNC machining prior to this and the guidance from Daltons Wadkin proved invaluable', comments Keith. 'Our main operator had some limited CAD knowledge but a two day training session at Daltons Wadkin HQ prior to the machine delivery gave him the skills and confidence to start machining right from the moment of installation.'

INSTALLATION Striebig Gives Boost To LongEstablished Derby Joinery Firm One of Britain’s oldest joinery businesses has invested in the future by buying a Striebig Evolution vertical panel saw, which is delivering improved accuracy together with increased productivity. J Seamer & Son was established in Derby in 1875 by John Seamer and until recently was still family-owned and run. The last member of the Seamer family involved in the business, also called John, retired in 2014 and the company is now owned by managing director Richard Latham, who started with the firm as an apprentice joiner in 1981. With 140 years of experience and expertise under its belt, Seamer’s 18 highly skilled joiners produce a wide range of hand-crafted bespoke joinery items for domestic and commercial customers nation-wide, with a great deal of repeat business. Among residential customers are a large number of people in the more affluent areas of London, for whom Seamer manufacture products to the highest possible standards. These range from bookcases and other furniture to kitchens, doors, windows and staircases. The company’s commercial clients include some of the most highly respected companies in the UK leisure industry. “As we operate at the very top end of our market it’s vitally important that we continue to strive to maintain and improve our product quality, which is why I believe in investing heavily in the best and most up-to-date equipment,” said Richard Latham. Buying the Striebig was a key part of a modernization process which has seen £100,000 spent on new machines and other equipment in recent months. When Mr Latham took over the running of the business he set up a management group to look into ways of improving how the products were made, as well as how to boost productivity. The existing sawing capability,

A joiner sizes a panel on the Striebig Evolution at J Seamer & Son

which consisted of an elderly flat bed saw that wasn’t all that accurate and needed three men to handle the cutting of large panels, was Quickly identified as being in urgent need of improvement. “I knew from my time in the business and from what contacts in associated companies had told me, that Striebig had a reputation of being the market leader in panel saws, which is why I didn’t bother looking at any other makes,” said Richard Latham. He did some research on Striebig and its UK dealer, T.M. Machinery, who were then asked to come in to talk about what machines they could offer. He decided to go with an Evolution model as it came with a bed size that could handle all their sheet material and he felt it suited exactly what was needed. The Striebig Evolution 5224 he selected, one of nine different sized models in the Evolution series, has a maximum cutting size of 4300 x 2240mm and a maximum depth of cut of 80mm. It features as standard Striebig’s user-friendly “touch and saw” operating system which delivers easy and convenient machine control through a touch screen panel that operates all of the machine’s functions. The Evolution represents the cutting edge in vertical panel saw technology. Technical features that are optional extras in other saws are included as standard. They include a digital measuring system, accurate to 0.1 mm, and an adjustable precision display that can be set to an accuracy of 1.0, 0.5 or 0.1 mm, according to the thickness of the panels being sized. It has a fully automatic roller locking function, an auxiliary stop section with its own tape measure, three additional auxiliary stops for repeat cuts and small work piece support, and automatic moving backing support. Striebig’s highly effective TRK extraction keeps users well ahead of all European legislation, with the panel support system offering support for the thinnest of panels. The Evolution is used to size all the sheet material used by Seamer’s joiners, mainly MDF and plywood, including veneered MDF sheets, as well as cutting the occasional piece of timber to length. Richard Latham is extremely satisfied with the benefits the Evolution is delivering. “We

Managing director Richard Latham with the new Striebig vertical panel saw

now have 100 per cent accuracy all the time with cut panels no longer out of square. This means we have eliminated scrappage as well as saving on sawing time, which will help to improve our profitability.” Another plus is that the Striebig has reduced manual handling. It could take three men to size a large sheet on the flat bed saw, with two needed to feed the panel on to the bed and a third to pull it through. Now it’s usually a one man job on the Striebig, or occasionally two to handle the biggest panels. “In my book you get what you pay for and I wanted a saw that was reliable, accurate and long lasting,” said Richard Latham. “It was well worth buying the Striebig because of all the added benefits it’s giving us. The installation went as planned and T.M’s engineer then provided training in its use.” He said it makes him happy to know that all the joiners enjoy using the new saw because of its simplicity which has made their lives easier. T.M. Machinery’s sales director Matt Pearce added: “It’s very satisfying to know that by supplying one of the latest Striebig saws to Seamers we are helping this long-established company move forward and take full advantage of the latest in sawing technology.” For further information: Tel: 0116 271 7155 Email: sales@tmservices.co.uk www.tmmachinery.co.uk

Sigma 3 Kitchens are Cutting The Competition with Schelling “It was 1997 when I was first introduced to Schelling,” begins Gerald Jones, Managing Director of Sigma 3 Kitchens Ltd. “I was relatively new to the task of specifying and purchasing our company’s machinery but soon became familiar with the merits of choosing Schelling.” Eighteen years later, Gerald is at the forefront of innovation, purchasing the UK’s first Schelling S45 420 / 420 cut-to-size saw. “It was an impulsive buy,” admits Gerald, who first saw the machine on Schelling’s W14 Exhibition stand last October. “I went to W14 looking for a new drilling machine but visited the Schelling stand to catch-up

with the team. Before long, I was being drawn to the S45. I’d never seen a saw that could offer me a tilted cut up to 46 degrees, whilst still being able to cut boards to size conventionally.” Already the owner of two FMH 430 / 220 Automatic rear infeed cut-to-size Schelling saws, which were purchased in 2004 and are still performing tirelessly, the kitchen manufacturing specialist was keen to explore new avenues with the first fullyfledged two-in-one pressure beam saw on the market. Not a company to rest on its laurels, Sigma 3 Kitchens Ltd has gone through a number of changes since the recession, adapting to a demanding kitchen market.

“We have to be open to the idea of change to remain in business and I’m always keen to explore new opportunities, whenever and wherever they may appear,” explains Gerald. “Before the recession hit, we had a £6.5 million contract business but almost overnight, 80% of that business evaporated. It was survival of the fittest and we needed to re-evaluate the business to give it a new lease of life.” “We quickly realised that the change in market meant it was no longer about numbers, it was about quality. Going forward we had to be biased towards quality. This meant new machines that could not only offer exceptional accuracy and manufacturing excellence but also offer

flexibility in order for us to create one-off, bespoke designs. A new market was unfolding before our eyes and for us, it was obvious we needed to change – and quickly.” With this philosophy in mind, the company expanded its designs and services to the independent retailer and concentrated its efforts with own kitchen showrooms. But, with demand high, new machinery was crucial to maintain the production quality of over 1500 kitchen units per week. “Yes, during a demonstration the S45 was great at cutting MFC and acrylic faced foils quickly and efficiently and from previous experience of owning several Schelling saws, I know just how good the build quality is on each machine. But could the S45 offer me versatility today and in years to come?” A visit to Schelling’s Wetherbyshowroom gave Gerald the answer he was looking for: “I needed a hybrid and that’s exactly what the S45 is. It is the perfect tool to create bespoke, kitchen designs that require precise angled cuts.” Delivery of the machine was scheduled

within three weeks of the order being raised, with engineers removing a Schelling FXH 330 / 330 beam saw and installing the S45 in four days. “It was the best installation I’ve seen," admits Gerald. "Whilst the surplus machine was being transported back to Schelling’s showroom to be refurbished and re-sold, engineers took control of the new installation and within a couple of days our workers were being trained on the new machine. It was Austrian discipline at its best.” The new machine – which is suitable for single-unit and volume production provides a mitre cuts up to 4200 mm length (higher lengths on request). A 400mm saw blade diameter provides a maximum saw blade projection of 102mm (70mm at 45 degrees) and a saw travel speed of up to 100 m/min resulting in higher ejection speed for finished parts. Whilst it’s three movable air flotation tables have been designed to ensure good accessibility and easy panel handling. Also its motorized air table provides perfect angle cuts and mitre cutting at the same time. The S45 has remained true to form,

contributing towards an upturn in sales. “We don’t have a lacquering facility here but the S45 can be used with acrylic based products, which, in part, has contributed to a 30% increase in bespoke kitchen orders.” That’s not all. Since the machine was purchased, the S45’s angling capabilities have also been the catalyst behind the company’s new acrylic-based seamless box joint kitchen designs that are being launched this spring. But for Sigma 3 Kitchens Ltd, the purchase of Schelling’s first S45 is just the start of its investment in the future. “We’re continuing to expand with a new, purposebuild 7,000 sq ft warehouse and three new zero glueline edging machines, providing increased self-sufficiency and vastly improved panel quality. By working with like-minded companies that are leading innovation, we’ll continue to grow from strength to strength.”

TOOLING & MAINTENENCE

Vollmer Introduces New Circular Saw Blade Machine The sharpening carbide tipped circular saw blades has now been taken to a new level of productivity and precision with the launch of the new Vollmer CHC840 and CHC grinding machines. This next generation of grinding centres provide the ultimate in flexibility for the processing of saw blades up to 840 and 1300mm diameters. With four CNC controlled axes, the new CHC line provides accurate grinding of virtually all tooth geometries in a single cycle. The result for the customer is improved circular saw blade quality and tool life with innovative geometries that will exceed existing performance levels. All this is generated through a user friendly platform that has been developed for ease of use, flexibility and optimal productivity levels. The flexibility and user friendliness of the new CHC840 and CHC 1300 is provided via a new multi-function hand wheel that selects and controls the axes through a single module. The hand wheel avoids operator error and it can also be used as a potentiometer to conduct speed adjustments when running in automatic mode. This optimises machining times and improves surface finishes through the variable input of speeds for different surfaces. To support the elimination of operator error, the new CHC provides a feed pawl sensor system to eradicate the tooth pitch input whilst digital detection modules prevent errors by automatically adjusting the hook and clearance angles. Whereas these features simplify machining and eliminate operational errors, the ergonomics of the new CHC range include large 10 inch colour LCD display and a large viewing window to enhance the aesthetics and functionality of the machine. From a productivity standpoint, the new CHC840 and CHC1300 has oscillating grinding as standard for high material

removal rates in just one cycle. In addition, the machine has a motor driven hook and clearance angle adjustment for a rapid changeover from face to top grinding. This feature, along with optimum movement coordination that creates a shortened grinding time, ensures that the CHC is the most productive machine available for the sharpening of carbide tipped circular saw blades. The CHC series has a capacity for saw blades from 80 to 1300mm diameter with a minimum bore diameter of 10mm and a workpiece weight up to 30kg for the CHC 840 and 80kg on the CHC1300. Capable of processing blades up to 8mm wide with a cutting width of 12mm, the new CHC line is the ideal addition to any saw mill or manufacturer of high quality saw blades. With a quality, precision, service and reliability reputation that can only be expected from the Vollmer brand, the CHC840 and CHC1300 are high quality production machines with simplicity and user friendliness at their core. This is all packed into a small machine footprint of 1.43m deep by 1.9m wide by 1.98m high for the CHC840 and a respective footprint of

TOOLING Vollmer Launches New Gang Saw Sharpening Machine Vollmer has now taken the sharpening of gang saw blades to a new level of speed and precision with the recent introduction of its new CAG200 gang saw sharpening machine. Incorporating advanced grinding technology with an intelligent control system, the CAG200 is the benchmark in processing gang saw blades up to 200mm. Packed into the extremely robust enclosure is an economically attractive machine concept that combines flexibility, precision and ease of use within a highly productive sharpening machine. The principle of the new CAG200 sees a grinding head moved by two CNC controlled axes over the saw blade, which is clamped over the entire surface. This permits the sequential grinding of each tooth in a single clamping arrangement. Like many of the new Vollmer grinding solutions, the CAG200 is ergonomically manufactured with operator ease of use at the forefront of the design process. This design philosophy sees the CAG200 provide a 10inch colour LCD display on a swivel mounted panel, a large viewing window and a large door to simplify blade loading for the operator. Unlike alternate grinding machines, the CAG200 sees Vollmer introduce a completely new generation of machine

technology. Whilst alternate manufacturers move the saw blade, the CAG200 clamps the whole blade for the 2-axis grinding head to move along the blade. The two axis head permits the processing of the tooth pitch, height and shape. This forward thinking technique minimises vibration, improves surface finishes and guarantees a consistently high quality and precision level over the length of the complete saw blade. The unique manufacturing philosophy of the CAG200 further enhances surface finishes and consistency with a clamping design that will hold the blade as close as 2mm below the grinding point. This clamping support also enables higher stock removal rates for increased productivity and reduced cycle times. To generate faster production cycles, the CAG200 also has an extremely powerful grinding motor that drives a large grinding wheel for optimum results. To maintain tooth quality and precision when conducting high stock removal rates, the CAG200 can be used as a wet grinding machine. Capable of processing saw blades from 60 to 200mm with a grinding wheel diameter capacity up to 350mm, the CAG200 takes productivity to a whole new plateau. Suitable for machining blades from 1.4 to 2.6mm thick with a tooth length from 800 to 1500mm and a pitch from 15 to 40mm, the CAG200 caters for all

The new Vollmer CAG200 sharpening machine

possibilities. To process blades in this dimension range, the CAG200 includes a heavy duty 2.2kW motor that drives the grinding wheel at 45m/sec. To deliver stability when machining at such high material removal rates, Vollmer has provided a heavy duty base that takes the machine weight to a sturdy 2300kg. This is packed into a footprint of 995mm deep by 2760mm wide by 1940mm high. Conceived as the true all-rounder for processing gang saws, the CAG200 ensures easy and safe machining with excellent grinding results.

Pluss Takes Salvador to the West Country Almost within sight of Westward Ho! and situated in the ancient port and market town of Barnstaple on North Devon’s western seaboard can be found the principal timber component workshops of Pluss, well known throughout the UK for its network of industrial workshops and its significant disabled workforce. Pluss offers employment and employment support to people with learning and physical disabilities, mental health issues and long term health conditions, supporting thousands of people every year. All their woodworking activities are concentrated in Barnstaple and so it was that local manager John Squires contacted Daltons Wadkin with a view to identifying a crosscutting system to improve efficiency and performance within their mill. Subsequently John and, importantly, members of his workforce visited the Daltons Wadkin showroom in Nottingham to see the Salvador Superpush 200 system. The machine was demonstrated by the technical sales staff, leaving the Pluss team in no doubt as to the impact such a machine would have in their organisation. Resulting from this visit and the discussions with Daltons Wadkin Sales

Director, Andy Walsh, an order was placed for the Superpush machine which is now installed at Barnstaple and in operation some 30 hours per week. During a recent visit to the Pluss workshops by Alex and Francis Dalton the enthusiasm of both John and his workforce was obvious to see. The Salvador system has made a major impact and according to Mr Squires has reduced wastage from an average of 27% to less than 5%. This significant saving, together with the speed of operation, represents a

real success story. John Squires said, “The machine does everything that Daltons Wadkin said it would do and more. It has revolutionised our workshop and really impacted on the performance and accuracy of production.” A wide range of beds, largely of timber construction, are supplied to a variety of markets but include top of the range luxury models. The Salvador Superpush system is a fully programmable automatic crosscutting machine with defecting and optimising incorporating pusher speeds of up to 60 metres per minute and variable cutting speeds ranging from 0.2 to 2 seconds. The machine was delivered to Barnstaple, installed and commissioned by Daltons Wadkin engineers. Andy Walsh enthused, “It is always pleasing to provide a solution for customers, especially so in the case of Pluss where the machine performance actually exceeded the customer’s highest expectations.” Further information: Tel: 0115 986 5201o www.daltonswadkin.com To view the Salvador in operation at Pluss visit the Daltons Wadkin YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/daltonswadkin

DUST EXTRACTION

Cades Ltd Appointed as Ecogate Installer Ecogate Ltd, the distributor of ECOGATE® energy-saving dust extraction technology, has appointed Cades Ltd as an authorised installer. Bradford-based, Cades Ltd is the latest major UK dust extraction specialist to partner Ecogate Ltd. Ecogate is a proven energy-saving extraction optimisation system developed by California-based Ecogate, Inc. and has an impressive track record of successful applications in the UK As an authorised installer, Cades can offer its customers the complete Ecogate product range, including variable speed drives. It will also undertake energy-saving surveys, as well as full installation and commissioning of Ecogate extraction optimisation systems. Commenting on the move Steve Rhodes, sales director at Cades

said: “Being able to offer the energy-saving benefits of Ecogate, together with our exclusive UK distributorship for Moldow high-technology filters, will considerably strengthen our all-round dust and fume extraction capability.” Ecogate Ltd claims that installing their ‘Extraction-on-Demand’ system will slash electricity bills by up to 80% and will typically pay for itself in just two years. In most workshops, as little as 50% of machinery may be in operation at any given time, but dust extraction usually runs at full capacity, with fixed fan speed, all of the time. The outcome is an extraction system which is likely to be consuming more electricity than all the lights and all the machinery put together. An Ecogate system employs a central controller, automatic

motorised gates, remote machine sensors and variable speed technology. When a woodworking machine is turned on, the sensor signals the controller to open the motorised gate of that particular machine to provide extraction and the controller determines the optimum fan speed. The result is an optimised system that only uses energy when required. For further information: Cades Ltd. Tel: 0845 838 6166 Email: extraction@cadesltd.co.uk www.cadesltd.co.uk Ecogate Ltd. DUST EXTRACTION

Latest DCS Filter Technology for Ellis Furniture Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS) has recently completed a major energyefficient dust extraction scheme for leading furniture manufacturer Ellis Furniture at its factory in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Established in 1891, Ellis Furniture design and manufacture strong, durable and safe furniture to meet challenging environments such as universities, care homes and hotels. The company’s Huddersfield site has 200,000 sq. ft. of production space occupying two separate buildings on either side of a road. On one side is a 65,000 sq. ft. Facility, which is dedicated to machining and panel production, and on the other side is the company’s extensive assembly and CNC routing facility. Ellis Furniture who, in 2013, contracted DCS to install a complete energy-saving Ecogate extraction optimisation system for its machine shop, called DCS back in to discuss their requirements for a completely new extraction system to serve the assembly building. Ellis Furniture’s engineering manager, Paul Dudley, explains: “Our two existing

New generation ECOVAR VALIDUS filter replaced two enormous drag chain filters

filters were already working at full capacity and, with further investment in new equipment planned for the assembly area, we knew that the filters would no longer be fit for purpose. The board gave us the go ahead to look at the various dust extraction

options available and we were tasked with coming up with recommendations for a system that would provide the best longterm investment. After undertaking a detailed review of the pros and cons of different filter systems on the market we decided on an energy-efficient system proposed by DCS which centres round a Schuko ECOVAR VALIDUS filter.” New generation ECOVAR VALIDUS filters feature a fan cascade system whereby fans are brought on-line or taken off-line according to demand. Cleaning cycles are also tailored to specific needs by employing a cleaning train regeneration system. The Validus also benefits from a standardised construction system which means that the filter can be installed quickly, with reduced transport costs. Built using corrosion resistant galvanised external panels, units can be fitted with thermal insulation to save on energy usage and to provide soundproofing. “We were impressed with everything about the Validus filter”, says Paul Dudley, “and we already had proof of DCS’s capabilities following their highly successful installation of Ecogate

Sized at an air volume of 110,000 m3/hr, the new dust extraction system serves a total of 23 machines

throughout our machine shop, from which we continue to reap the benefits of massive energy savings.” Ellis Furniture contracted DCS to install the new extraction system during the firm’s Christmas shutdown. This meant

disconnecting and removing two enormous old drag chain filters, installing the new Validus filter, including all new ductwork, and having everything fully operational in just seven days. The new plant, sized at an air volume of 110,000 m3/hr, extracts from

a total of 23 machines, with waste collected by the filter being discharged pressure-free from a rotary valves, via a screw conveyor, into an enclosed skip. The energy-efficient system employs four 37kW cascade fan units that operate in conjunction with an Ecogate energy-saving system, and are controlled from a touch screen control panel. Matthew Thomas, a maintenance engineer at Ellis, who developed his engineering skills through the company’s internal development programme, and was involved with the dust extraction project from start to finish, says: “DCS engineers did a thoroughly professional job and executed our time line plan perfectly. Had we gone for a traditional filter, which would have been delivered flat-packed, it would have been a near impossible task. The Validus filter was supplied in three preassembled sections, which considerably simplified installation when compared with erecting traditional filters. ”

WOODWASTE

Companies Invest Sooner Not Later to Get Best RHI Deal The team at Wood Waste Technology has been busy installing new biomass hot water boiler systems, to help companies maximise the returns available from the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme. One of the boilers has been installed into Bill Cleyndert & Company, a leading manufacturer of exquisite bespoke furniture, cabinetry and specialist joinery based in Fakenham, Norfolk. Bill Cleyndert & Company wanted to reduce waste disposal costs and save money on the oil and propane that was being used to heat the factory. By investing in a biomass boiler, the waste wood from production could be burned to create free heating for the factory, and heating and hot water for the office areas. Wood Waste Technology was the chosen supplier, due to the company’s excellent reputation and sophisticated product engineering. Its new biomass water boiler has been declared fully compliant with the RHI scheme without the need for additional flue gas filtration equipment or ceramic filters, significantly reducing the investment and on-going maintenance costs of a RHI compliant boiler. The boiler has also been tirelessly tested with some of the most difficult and pollutant fuel waste, including melamine faced chipboard and MDF, and in every test, the boiler has stayed within the extremely stringent RHI emission regulations for both NOx and particulate. The boilers can also operate in clean air zones under the Clean Air Act, meaning the water boilers now meet the two highest standards in emissions regulations and are able to be used in even the sternest of jurisdictions in the UK. The team at Wood Waste Technology was able to set up the new boiler to integrate with the current office heating system using a plate heat exchanger. At the same time, the engineers also installed a new extraction system to improve the ventilation in the factory, plus a Gross Apparatebau GmbH shredder to shred the wood off-cuts. Instead of using a traditional air transfer system, the team at Wood Waste Technology installed a conveyor to provide a quieter, more energy efficient solution. The boiler was installed into a dedicated boiler-house next to the 28,000 square foot factory, and uses six strategically placed 50w air-handling units to distribute the warm air from the boiler to where it’s needed, to keep the 55 workers warm whilst working. Director, Mandi Cleyndert said: “We did thorough research before ordering the new

60 Panel & Joinery Production MAY/JUNE 2015

system and estimate that we should be able to reduce our waste disposal costs by around 75% a year, whilst saving money on heating and hot water. We can even utilise the sawdust that accumulates from production, as it simply gets fed into the boiler to burn.” The Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) offers substantial financial benefits to companies who invest in new biomass technology, for example, the scheme could be worth around £20,000 £25,000 on average a year to a company fitting a WW199 boiler, and runs for 20 years once accredited. Wood Waste Technology’s boilers have been designed and tested to BSEN303-5-2012, the highest standard for efficiency and emissions, allowing customers to maximise their return from the RHI scheme by getting more money from every kilogram of fuel burnt. Managing Director of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “The value of RHI payments is regularly reviewed, so companies thinking about biomass technology should find out more as soon as possible. For example, at the end of December 2014 the payment level dropped by 10%.“ Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business
