AXYZ International Relocates to a New Facility In Telford Leading supplier of CNC routing, engraving and cutting solutions, AXYZ International has relocated from its former main UK and Continental Europe facility in Wolverhampton to a much larger and more strategically located site on the Telford T54 Business Park. The move was completed by the 13 July 2015 target date in what was described as a “fairly fast- track process”. President of the parent company in Canada, Alf Zeuner stated that the £1M investment demonstrated the confidence that AXYZ International had in its expanding UK and Continental Europe operations and the predicted future growth in these areas of the company’s global activities. Endorsing this confidence, UK Managing Director Mark Sweeney commented: “Having outgrown the capacity of our premises in Wolverhampton, both in terms of volume of output and the size of the machines being supplied, we recognised the need to relocate to a larger, more technically advanced and strategically located site. Situated on the T54 Business Park in Telford adjacent to the M54 motorway with links to other major road networks, the state-of-the-art facility will enable a 100 per cent increase in our assembly, supply and demonstration capabilities, with the latter now featuring a continually expanding range of machines within a much larger showroom.” The extended demonstration facility can now house up to four of the larger machines in AXYZ International’s portfolio of AXYZ (including the recently launched Trident integrated cutting and finishing solution), Pacer and Z machines. A radically enlarged workshop also allows for greater machine building, refurbishment and storage capabilities, while a dedicated new loading bay will help speed up the transportation of AXYZ International

machines and accessories. AXYZ International Vice President – Market Development, Robert Marshall further emphasised how important the move to the larger facility in Telford was to the company’s future growth and prosperity in the UK and Continental Europe. He added: “This is a major and seminal stage in the company’s ongoing development and one that will greatly enhance our machine assembly and supply capabilities. CNC routing, engraving and cutting solutions under our primary AXYZ and Pacer power brands continue to command a strong presence in the key markets we serve. These include predominantly the sign manufacturing, plastics and metal fabrication, industrial woodworking, furniture production and panel processing sectors.” The better situated Telford site will help AXYZ International to stay connected to its customers in the UK and throughout Continental Europe, with the larger facility

providing an enriched experience for visiting customers and the opportunity it will now provide to better assess the expanding range of machines now available. Visitors will also be able to follow every stage of the new building development via a special sequential display of photographic images.

Another New Member for the Blum Customer Services Team Lewis Biggs is the latest recruit to the Blum UK team of Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) which is expanding rapidly. Lewis brings a wealth of experience to the team, having previously worked as a kitchen designer and fitter for 10 years. NEWS Combilift Breaks Ground on €40 Million Manufacturing Facility Combilift Ltd, a major supplier of 4-way forklifts and other materials handling equipment to the timer and merchant sectors recently formally inaugurated the construction process of its new 40 million, 46,000m manufacturing facility and global HQ in Monaghan, Ireland. In the presence of local dignitaries and Combilift’s current workforce of 350, Managing Director Martin McVicar and Technical Director Robert Moffett turned the first sod on the 40 hectare site which will house a multi-function facility including a dedicated R&D building, purpose built testing area and adjoining administration offices. The facility is larger than originally announced and the expansion will position Combilift to double its current ¤150 million turnover by 2020. The initial phase to level the site is expected to last for 10 weeks and 200 personnel will be employed throughout the construction period of 18 months. A further 200 jobs are set to be created in the next five years, mainly for skilled technicians and design engineers. Martin McVicar comments: “We are delighted to break ground on our new facility which shows our commitment to manufacturing in Monaghan as well as to the regional economy.” Combilift is also a workplace partner for the Assembly Technician Traineeship course which starts this year at the Monaghan Institute. This traineeship, together with a recently approved Apprenticeship for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) Technicians, starting next year, will ensure the supply of locally qualified personnel. Combilift is best known for its wide range of multi-directional forklifts, Aisle-Master articulated trucks and material handling solutions such as the Combilift Straddle Carrier designed to handle large containers and over-sized loads. The company was established in 1998 and thanks to the continued 7% investment of turnover in R&D, it has produced in excess of 25,000 units and exports to more than 75 countries.

Blum Turnover Up Again in the 2014/2015 Financial Year Austrian fittings manufacturer records further increase in sales. Despite different developments in different market regions, the Blum Group increased its turnover yet again in the 2014/2015 financial year, thanks to product innovations, international market presence, consistent investments and the high degree of flexibility on the part of its employees. The family-owned company recorded a growth in turnover of 8% in comparison to the previous year. Fittings manufacturer Blum from Hoechst, Austria is pleased to report that the 2014/2015 business year (from 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015) was a good one. Thanks to innovative products, international market presence, consistent investments and flexible employees, the family-owned company based in Hoechst, Austria upped its sales by 8% in comparison to the previous year and recorded in excess of ¤1,555 million in turnover. 50% of the turnover was generated in the EU area, 15% in the USA.

Markets fared differently Most of Western Europe recorded a positive growth in the last financial year. The fittings manufacturer is also pleased with the development of sales in the EU member states in Eastern Europe. Significant losses were, however, recorded in Russia and Ukraine due to the impact of the conflict there. Business continued to be good in North America, whereas the economic situation in South America was characterized by ups and downs. Most markets in Asia Pacific continued to record a positive development.

Blum. On average, the Blum Group employed 6,515 persons worldwide, which is a growth of 328 employees in comparison to the previous year. 82 new apprentices will start a technical course of training with Blum Austria on 1 September 2015. This means that 298 trainees will be serving an apprenticeship with the Blum Group as of early September, 14 of whom are with Blum USA.

Investments during the 2014/2015 financial year Investments by the Blum Group totalled more than ¤171 million in the 2014/2015 business year. In Austria, a new high bay warehouse was put into operation at Plant 2 in Hoechst. Construction work was started on an extension to Plant 4 in Bregenz to increase production and warehousing capacities. Blum will have doubled the capacity of its vocational training centre in Dornbirn by the time the company takes on its new apprentices in September. Blum set the course for its future corporate development by buying a 40,000 sq. meter (430,550 sq. ft.) plot of land in Dornbirn in the immediate vicinity of Plant 7. This is where construction work will be started on a new stamping centre in the Autumn. Blum also invested in its locations worldwide. Production and warehousing facilities were expanded in Poland, and an extension to offices and warehousing area was completed in Russia. Warehousing capacities are currently being increased in Brazil, and construction work was started on a new central warehouse in Shanghai, China.

It was presented at the trendsetting tradeshow in Cologne this year and was enthusiastically received by visitors. The company’s product offering is rounded off by various services, such as the Online Product Configurator which helps users quickly find the right fittings, and a new mobile app that helps manufacturers and fitters with dimensioning and the adjustment of fittings. Marketing and logistics services are being extended on an ongoing basis.

Decorative Panels Charity Summer Event Decorative Panels held a two day Summer Charity BBQ. We were pleased to welcome 250 of our customers and suppliers on Thursday 2nd July, and our workforce of over 350 people who came on Friday for a day of fun and fundraising for three extremely worthy charities. Both days kick started with a bit of fun and a spot of light competition on ten different styles of interactive inflatables – the perfect way for adults to become big kids again!! Throughout both days, members of the dp team sold over 4000 tickets to raise money for our three chosen charities, Children in Need, Forget me Not Children’s Hospice and Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice. We are delighted to say that we raised £4963 on Thursday and £1531.15 on Friday, and Decorative Panels have decided to match this great effort pound for pound so we are able to donate £9926.86 to Children in Need, and £1531.15 a piece for Forget me Not Children’s Hospice and Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice. A team from our Teesside site also participated in a duathlon earlier in

the year and raised an amazing extra £504.45 for Zoe’s Place. We wrapped the evening up with an exhilarating performance from the UKs best event band, the RPJ band. Before they arrived, the band told us that they strive to exceed expectation at every turn, and didn’t they do just that! From us all at Decorative Panels, we would like to say a huge thank you to

Leitz Tooling Three Peaks Challenge Raises Over £5,000 for Children’s Charities On 4th July, one of the hottest weekends of the year so far, Team Leitz (Brian Maddox, Tony Kumm and Dave McCann) made their way to Fort William in Scotland to start their climb of the three highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours. The hike and climb of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon mountain totaled more than 23 miles over 11,000 feet. Our intrepid team survived high winds, snow and sleet on Ben Nevis to complete the climb of all three mountains, and they finished a valiant 16th out of 25 teams undertaking the challenge that weekend.

They said, “It’s all about the kids; that’s why we did this insane thing. The actual climb was physically and mentally draining, but that was nothing compared to what the children and families that these charities work with go through on a daily basis, and it’s our privilege to help”. Over £5,000 was raised for children’s charities, with £2,000 going to Action Medical Research, which is dedicated to improving the health of babies and children through research, and £3,000 to Haven House Children’s Hospice, which delivers specialist nursing care and makes a massive difference to life-limited children and their families.

WHAT’S NEW Makita Introduce 18v Lxt Finishing Brad Nailer - Rocker switch selection between bump or sequential fire mode - Low recoil level for better tool control - High visibility slim tip nose The new Makita LXT DBN500 brad nailer is engineered for 18 gauge finishing nails and from 15 to 50mm length. It is particularly suitable for second fix construction site installations such as doorway architraves and skirtings. Powered by one 18v Lithium-ion battery the motor develops a maximum output of 460watts and will give approximately 1000 shots on a full charge. The magazine has the capacity to carry 110 nails and when empty the machine weighs just 3.5kg. Operator accuracy and firing efficiency are the keys to the new Makita brad nailer. The easy-to-see slim tip nose is not shielded from view as the front body line is only just ahead of the sight line. Nail depth can be

controlled by adjustment without tools and an LED job light illuminates the target point. The anti-dry firing mechanism ensures that a nail is in the ready position or if not positioned correctly the nailer will not operate saving battery life and enhancing safety. This new Makita nailer can be used in either bump-fire mode, where the nose is bumped against the target to activate it, or in sequential mode where the tip is placed on the target and the trigger pulled. Mode selection is by simple rocker switch. A trigger lock can be used to safeguard the machine at any time. Recoil has been substantially reduced in this new Makita nailer which provides better tool control for rapid applications; it also reduces the effort required from the operator to control the nailer when constantly repositioning the tool for the next shot.

Norbord’s New Dryer System Brings Green Bonus After a 12-day shutdown, the new thermal oil furnace and revamped dryer system at the Cowie plant of leading panel products manufacturer, Norbord, was installed, tested and back on line, on schedule and with no accidents; no mean feat when you consider that the £7 million project involved more than 100 contractors on site dismantling and removing the old plant and installing new equipment. The project took the equivalent of 15,000 man hours to complete and involved up to 20 trades working across the site to meet the tight deadline. In addition to installing the new burner and dryer system, Norbord also installed a dust-cleaning system so that waste wood dust generated at the site could be used as the primary fuel source. Norbord is a leading global manufacturer of wood-based panels and the world’s largest producer of oriented strand board (“OSB”). Cabinet Vision’s 2D Drawings Help Sell Bespoke Designs A bespoke furniture manufacturer uses Cabinet Vision’s 2D drawing page as the heart of its selling process to customers. Hetherington Newman’s reputation for fine English craftsmanship, producing contemporary and classic bespoke furniture and architectural joinery, has grown through word-of-mouth recommendation without the need to advertise. The specialist Cabinet Vision and ScreenTo-Machine woodworking software creates accurate designs at the Cheshire studio and showroom, and ensures they are faithfully reproduced at their factory in Derbyshire, 30 miles away. Mainly using painted face frames with veneered carcasses, their materials schedule includes oak, maple and walnut veneer carcasses, along with solid woods such as oak, walnut and maple. CAD designer Ruth Lovelock says because every room design is unique to each customer’s specific requirements, Cabinet Vision’s drawing page is a major selling tool. “We use it rather than 3D photo rendering to make the design realistic to the customer’s chosen appliances and decor.” Every job is designed from scratch, following survey dimensions. “Each cabinet

should be exact, and we show what the appliances are and where they’re going.” Ruth works in conjunction with fellow designer Zoe Iasonos, beginning Cabinet Vision’s process with drawing the walls and setting the job properties, then pulling in the cabinets, ensuring the cabinet construction and material is exactly what is

required. When the cabinets are all in place, the cross section is sent to the drawing screen where she undertakes any modifications, including adding more details to make the finished 2D drawing more realistic. “For example, if a customer’s having a Mercury range cooker and there isn’t one in our library, we’ll create a line drawing of it. Also, we’ve saved a variety of handles in the symbols library, because standard handles can look like black dots when printed. It can be quite laborious creating realistic looking handles in the drawings, but going into that amount of detail makes all the difference when we’re showing customers what their room will look like.” The 2D drawing page proved particularly useful during the design of a unique larder cabinet. “It was 2.63 metres high, with a number of elements to it, including a pullout drawer at the bottom with a vertical divider. Above that was a section containing a wicker basket set in a frame. Then an engraved bread drawer with lift-up lid and

A number of adjustable shelves were on top of that with a door rack fixed to the back of the door, right up to a top box which could be readily accommodated because of the high ceiling. “We did it all in Cabinet Vision, and it was good to show the customer exactly what it would look like.” They also keep door styles completely bespoke, creating a new style for each job, rather than expecting customers to select from an existing set range. An example being where they needed a door with an applied beading inside the frame, rather than being routed out of the door panel. “Instead of creating a door with a raised panel detail we used a door with a flat frame and added a User Created Standard. The process duplicated a door without the bead, then the UCS took that style and added an applied moulding inside the frame.” Cabinet Vision was also able to overcome the issue of making that design work for a two-panel door, as well as calling the bead off on the cutlist, ensuring the factory was fully informed of the material quantities. She says the ability to add a comment to

cabinets, which appears on the assembly sheet, is another good way of ensuring the factory know exactly what is needed, especially if it is something out of the ordinary. “For example, if a kitchen base unit has vertical dividers for chopping blocks and baking trays instead of horizontal adjustable shelves, including that as a comment reinforces to the factory that what they’re seeing on the assembly sheet is right. “We spend a lot of time up front with Cabinet Vision to get the design absolutely right, but it ensures the workshop produces it accurately first time. No matter what the issues are or what we want, Cabinet Vision can provide the solution. Without it, we’d probably need three additional members of staff to achieve what we do. It would be extremely long-winded and prone to error.” The same would be true in the factory, according to joiner Michael Marsden who is responsible for the shop floor CNC operation. “Before we had Cabinet Vision four years ago I had to check every measurement by hand, but now I just check the model. It saves so much time.” When he receives the drawings he

ensures that what has been designed is completely machineable, that the drilling patterns line up, and double checks the material. “After I check each cabinet individually against the designer’s spec, Cabinet Vision produces the cutlists for the shopfloor.” Screen-To-Machine then transmits the CNC codes to the Morbidelli 3-axis router. “Cabinet Vision’s nesting function is particularly useful as hardly any additional set-up is required after those files are loaded. “As long as the model from the studio is accurate, we know that what we cut here will be absolutely perfect.”

Alphacam Raises Staircase Curtain for Innovative Timberworks Wales “It was like a curtain being in front of us until 2008. Then we installed Alphacam and the curtains opened.” Those are the words of Gerwyn Lloyd, owner of family-run innovative joinery and CNC machining company Timberworks Wales. “Alphacam has become completely indispensable. I can’t imagine a day in the workshop without it.” In particular it has revolutionised their staircase production process, in conjunction with Staircon. Gerwyn’s wife, Susan, designs their staircases with the Staircon Professional suite, and the file is transferred via AlphaEdit to their uniquely customised Anderson PTP-3013 router. “Alphacam nests the stair treads and places the strings and newel posts on the bed,” he says. “It would be almost impossible for us to lay everything out on the bed in conjunction with the laser, without it.” The laser he refers to is their SL ProDirector 6, installed above the router after consultation with Martin Measures from Alphacam and Derek Coulson from Staircon. The laser uses AlphaEdit to find the toolpaths for the parts, then projects them on to the workpiece below. “As it’s calibrated specifically for the CNC machine we can put any number of parts on the bed.

It increased our production by up to 40 per cent almost overnight.” He says using the laser projector frees them from pinstops and allows small parts to be nested anywhere on the table, optimising toolpaths and running more parts in each nest. “As it accurately shows the toolpath on the bed, we can place smaller blanks with much more precision, saving material costs and reducing off-cut

waste disposal costs. Projecting pod locations also greatly reduces the chances of expensive tool and pod collisions.” The CNC machine itself is another example of Timberworks’ innovation, as it can be used both as a matrix bed and for beam and pod technology. Only having around 1,000 square metres across two floors in their workshop nestling in the hills above Port Talbot, Gerwyn Lloyd says they do not have room for two machines. But as they produce anything from staircases to kitchen units, bedrooms, and board products – along with offering a subcontract CNC machining service to other joinery companies – they need the capability of both cutting techniques. “We adapted the Anderson ourselves, and Alphacam is perfect for cutting staircase components, curved windows, and parts such as chair arms, or anything else requiring a lot of tooling.” The timber used for staircases includes oak, walnut, ash, mahogany and mdf. Once Susan completes the full-scale production drawings using Staircon’s CAD function, the dxf files are exported into Alphacam

with pre-determined layer names, for machining. “They go straight into a folder specifically for stairs, and I then use a bar code reader to find the individual parts.” CNC programs are generated for individual strings, treads and newels, along with reports for the shop floor. “The laser uses the same files to project the position on the bed, so we never have any issues with parts being out of place. “Alphacam also gives us a 100 per cent total ability to change anything I need to at the machine, including tooling,” says Gerwyn. “If we’re working with a particularly hard timber I may need to slow the tool speed right down, and I can do it instantly with Alphacam.” It also means they can carry out swift and accurate prototyping, especially for staircases featuring complex turns.

The combination of Alphacam and Staircon provided Timberworks Wales with a low cost solution when their previous staircase software was no longer supported. The strategy was to install Staircon as a specialist front-end design and CAD package for staircases. The powerful and versatile Alphacam is a generic CAM system, which is also utilised for contracts other than staircases. “For example we recently had an order for 63 coffee tables, and we used Alphacam’s nesting facility to put all the parts out for us.” They stock over 100 cutting tools, frequently used in batches of ten. “We use specific tungsten tools for machining solid timber staircases and windows in a beam and pod operation, with pcd tools for our sheet work on the matrix bed.” Around 70 per cent of their work is for

South and West Wales, along with London, the South Coast, and now moving into the Midlands. But they are also starting to deliver further afield, as more customers learn about their guaranteed maximum turnaround time of 14 days for every contract, irrespective of the number of components involved. Operations Director Mandeep Binji was keen to take their crosscutting capability to a new level and the equipment has now been installed by Daltons Wadkin engineers at AJB’s new state of the art manufacturing facility in Corby Northamptonshire. Brave Design Reach New Heights In Vertical Panel Cutting Daltons Wadkin install Elcon Quadra Advance Brave Design Ltd have invested in a fully programmable automatic Elcon Quadra Advance panel saw to boost panel cutting operations in their contract furniture manufacturing unit in St Helens, Lancashire. INSTALLATION Kimla Tops the bill at Belgrade Theatre Daltons Wadkin play leading role To keep pace with ever complex and creative stage design Belgrade's Head of Workshop, Andy Hilton, looked to exploit the power of a CNC router at their dedicated production site in Coventry. 'I can not begin to tell you what a difference the Kimla has made', enthuses Andy, 'jobs that previously took two of our guys a week to complete by hand are now being machined in a couple of hours'. The Belgrade Theatre was built in 1958 as part of the reconstruction of Coventry after World War II. Holding 858 in its twotier main auditorium, and 250-300 in the flexible, new second space, B2, it remains one of the largest regional producing theatres in Britain. The Belgrade acquired its name in recognition and thanks for a gift of timber from the Serbian capital city of Belgrade, that was used in the construction of the auditorium. The impressive workshop space is housed at a separate site just a couple of miles from the main theatre in the centre of Coventry. Following detailed discussions into the workshops existing and future machining requirements Alex Dalton of Daltons Wadkin had no hesitation in recommending a Kimla CNC Router. 'The theatre uses a huge range of materials in its productions', comments Alex. 'The machine had to be versatile enough to handle continuous heavy

machining of MDF, Ply and solid wood, including nesting operations, while maintaining the ability to work with materials such as foam, rubber, aluminium and plastics. The machine was custom built with a large 2100 x 3100mm vacuum bed, 9 kW router head, 10 position linear tool changer and a separate oscillating knife head mounted on an independent Z axis. ‘The oscillating knife head is a useful addition

for rubber and foam etc.’, says Alex, ‘with twin servo’s it can also be used as a static knife’. As with all Kimla CNC routers, Belgrade Theatre’s machine was supplied with the Kimla PC-CAM software – a powerful but simple and intuitive CADCAM package that can be installed on as many PC’s as is required without additional licences. ‘We have been using AutoCAD for years’, comments Andy, ‘and the Kimla works seamlessly with our drawings, but we also find ourselves jumping on the PC-CAM software as its easier and quicker’. 'Our Kimla installations are going from strength to strength', enthuses Alex, ‘It was always going to be difficult to establish a new brand of CNC Routers into an already saturated UK market. HOMAG’s FKF 200 Solutions for Panel Lamination Launched in autumn 2014, the HOMAG Optimat FKF 200 is the preconfigured entry-level solution for single-sided laminating of board materials and for the production of lightweight panels. New Video Collection from Egger Wood panel manufacturer EGGER is producing a new range of videos aimed at furniture manufacturers and retailers looking to keep up with changing design trends across Europe. Available now at www.egger.com/home-decor-trendcast, and on Youtube, the first video deals with the ever-increasing popularity of woodgrains and rustic decors. INSTALLATION AXYZ Router Boosts Production at Leading Conservatory Manufacturer An AXYZ 4000 series CNC router supplied by AXYZ International has helped boost production and radically reduce customer turnaround times at Rotherham-based Connaught Conservatory Roofs. For over 20 years, the company has been manufacturing high-quality conservatory buildings, primarily for the home improvement market but also for the commercial sector, that involves the use of timber materials such as plywood and OSB composite board for the roofs. Hitherto, these materials were processed largely by hand that proved a time consuming and labour intensive operation. With the installation in February of this year of an AXYZ 4014 CNC router, the same work is being completed in a fraction of the time to minimise manual input and enable a much faster turnaround on customers’ orders. Managing Director, David Gallagher commented: “Following assessment of the capabilities of three different router manufacturers, we opted for AXYZ International as our preferred supplier. Although the most expensive of the three machines considered, the AXYZ router demonstrated superior engineering qualities. In particular, these related to the level of routing precision made possible and this ensured that the primary conservatory requirements of optimum thermal insulation and weatherproofing were achieved.” Manual input has also been further reduced due to the fact that the router can be remotely controlled via the company’s computer to enable unattended operation. The AXYZ router’s capabilities will shortly be further enhanced by the addition of a knife unit that will be used to cut building insulation material up to a depth of 90mm. Like all routers in the AXYZ 4000 series, the 4014 model can be supplied with a host of optional performanceenhancing design features. Arguably, the most important of these is the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility. This ensures

the material being processed is always held securely throughout the production cycle to provide optimum accuracy and a superior edge finish whilst reducing material wastage and machine downtime caused by incorrectly set vacuum valves. An expanded (up to 33 stations) ATC (Automatic Tool Change) is also now available. The AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility supplements and supports other performance-enhancing features recently introduced by AXYZ International. These include the latest A2MC machine control system that greatly reduces ‘bounce’ and vibration caused by sudden acceleration and/or deceleration and the new AVS (AXYZ Vision System) which is integrated within the A2MC system and which is fully compatible with all of the cutting tools used on AXYZ routers. Complementing these machine upgrades is a new helical rack and pinion drive system that greatly reduces machine wear. This is possible due to the system’s use of a multiple gear teeth configuration that

INSTALLATION HOMAG helps Little Dreams create an advanced manufacturing facility Stoke-on-Trent based Little Dreams has been manufacturing contract furniture for almost 30 years. Originally focused on the toy industry, the company diversified into educational furniture early on. Because of the high quality and precision of the components it produced, it was a small step from there to becoming a supplier to a wide range of market sectors. “Our production flexibility has been the key,” explains Andrew Leake, managing director at Little Dreams. bed machines. “The investment, however, that has made possibly the biggest impact on our business is in the HOMAG Automation TLF 210 storage and retrieval system coupled to the HOLZMA HPP 300 beam saw. This set-up was central to our five-year plan and is something that had been on our ‘want’ list for a long time. Our business uses around 150 different types of sheet materials in a year, some of which we will only require one sheet. Stock keeping for these items was a nightmare and we never really knew exactly what we had available at any one time. “All that has changed with the storage system. Not only do we now know exactly what stock we’ve got, but also we know precisely where it is. More importantly, perhaps, the storage system has increased the through put on the saw by over 50% because it delivers exactly the right board at precisely the right time. This means that the throughput of the saw is determined by the storage system rather than the saw operator, so it is much more reliable and efficient.”

Coping with production fluctuations “Another significant investment was the HOMAG Ambition 2264 edgebander with the ZHR 05 return system. We wanted to upgrade our previous machine to enable us to use PU glue and thicker edge materials so we visited the HOMAG UK showroom in Castle Donington to see what they could offer. “We were looking for a machine that would give us plenty of capacity. Our production is never constant; sometimes we are

running small jobs through the edgebander and then all of a sudden we need to ramp up production to cope with a big order that comes through. “The Ambition 2264 gives us this capacity with no loss of quality and the return system we specified means it can be run easily by one operator which is a big money saver.”

The shape of things to come “The nature of our business also means we have a lot of shaped pieces to edge and although we have a BRANDT KTD 720 that handles the small radius work, we needed a machine that would be able to cope with the large volumes of shaped worktops that we produce. “As usual, the HOMAG UK area manager, Jon Lawman, was really helpful and suggested we invest in a HOMAG Venture 320 L. This CNC machine is great for cutting and edging shaped parts and enables us to get a lot more work through quickly.”

Controlling our destiny “The investment we have made over the last five years has been substantial, but it has totally changed our business. Our USP (unique selling proposition) is that we can handle anything, easily, quickly and cost effectively. “The key to this has to be the eSOLUTION software which enables us to control all the machines. “Ultimately, once we do layouts and 3D visuals for customers and they give us approval to manufacture, we will be able to just click a button and send the job to the machines. Previously, we would have had three or four days’ work to get everything ready, but it will be instant and that is vitally important to us. Every year, lead times get shorter and shorter; it’s a major problem for manufacturers and so everything we do is geared to meet this demand.”

It’s like having another salesman on the road “All this new equipment has given us our dream factory, but it has delivered far more than just great products at competitive prices. When we invite customers or potential customers in to the facility they are blown away by what they see, particularly with the HOMAG Automation storage and retrieval system linked to the HOLZMA saw. They have seen nothing like it and the confidence factor it communicates is like having another salesman on the road. “Naturally, a project like this takes time and money to complete, but when we have needed it, HOMAG Finance has been ready to help, putting together sensible finance packages that suit our specific requirements. They have always given us a fair deal and it has enabled us to bring forward investment in machinery. “All in all, I have not got a bad word to say about HOMAG UK, they have always done us proud and I know I can trust them to do the best for our company,” concludes Andrew Leake.

Up to 50 window units per shift in a small space The concept is based on a solid gantry bridge, a beam table with one or two independently movable rows of clamps and the gripping unit for loading, clamping, and unloading the components. The spindles, processing units, tool changing systems and tables can be configured individually. This allows the machine to accommodate four parts simultaneously and for processing to be performed in parallel at both tables. Processing can take place at one of the tables whilst components are being clamped, loaded, or removed at another table. The result is a significant increase in performance compared to solutions currently available on the market. There is also a consistent scalability of performance from 20 to 50 window units per shift. Production is further increased by the compact installation area with both loading and removal in one place.

ToolTower tool storage system: faster, bigger, better The new ToolTower storage system provides high capacity, short tool change times whilst easily accommodating large and heavy tools. Generous distances between the tool slots enable loading without any gaps, even for large tools with double-section height. Up to four disks can be positioned above one another, ensuring full capacity to tool slots. The swivel arm maximises productivity times with a fast tool change. The new tool is prepared during processing and is ready in a waiting position, so that only a short swivelling movement is necessary for the tool change.

More than just windows - from XS to XXXL With part lengths of up to 4200 mm in the standard sequence and up to 6000 mm with single feed, part thicknesses up to 150 mm and widths up to 300 mm, the powerProfiler can handle much more than just the standard range of frames. SANDERS Viet Slashes Sanding Time at Hawkins Joinery Hawkins Joinery in Wellingborough is benefitting from faster panel sanding together with improved quality after buying a Viet S1 wide-belt sander. The Italian-made machine was bought primarily to sand down the lippings on oak and oak-veneered panels used as retail shelving, a task it does swiftly and efficiently. This was previously carried out either manually using an electric planer, followed by hand sanding, or was sent out to a local business that had a modern sander. Hawkins Joinery specialises in producing bespoke shop fitting units to customers’ exacting designs. End users include clothing outfitters Moss Bros and leading retailer Lakeland, plus many others, for which it produces counters, wall panels, gondola displays and tables. Said Dave Hawkins, who together with his brother Mark owns the joinery: “In a typical contract for a Lakeland shop we have to make between 100 and 150 items of shelving. It used to take one man around two days to do all the sanding by hand, so that the lippings were flush with the panels. “With the Viet it takes only about an hour, with one man loading the pieces on to the sander and another taking them off. The finished quality is always spot on, much better than we could do by hand.” He said that the time saved was a major boost to efficiency. “It allows the men to get on with other jobs in the workshop and there’s now no need to pay another company

to do the sanding for us when we are busy.” The Viet S1 2200 heavy-duty model features two sanding belts, the first to do the initial rough sanding and the second to produce a fine finish. Kündig Smoothes the Way for M&R Joinery M & R Joinery Services Ltd is a premier manufacturer and installer of traditional timber windows and doors in the North West of England. Operating out of a manufacturing facility in Knowsley, Liverpool, with its excellent transport links, the company offers a nationwide service, from initial quote through to surveying, manufacturing, installation and aftersales. Recently, the company has invested in a Kündig Premium-2 1350 RP sander customised for work with joinery, from Carl O'Meara of Kündig Ltd. “We needed a wide belt sander to save time and to reduce the dust in the workshop,” M & R's Phillip Levensen said. “Before we bought the Kündig we were using hand held sanders, so the belt size on that is 100 mm wide while the belt on the Kündig is 1.3 m wide: that is, 13 times the width of the hand held sander! “So the precision is much better and there is much less dust: with a hand held device even with a dust bag fitted the environment can become quite dusty. The Kündig sander has its own dust extraction system, which cost a few thousand pounds, but is separate to the dust extraction system for the other machines. It is better for the workshop in terms of dust: and we can put more items through it and more quickly than using a little portable hand-held tool. “A wide-belt sander is much more expensive than a hand-held tool, but we did some trials at Carl's place and were very pleased with the results. We had only used the sander a couple of times when we agreed to buy it! “During the three month turn around, waiting for the sander to arrive after it had been ordered, we felt we could not go back to using the hand held sander, because a widebelt sander saves so much time, so Carl let us use his sander when necessary. I felt a bit cheeky because we were arriving with so much product, but Carl was fine with this, saying use it as much as you like while waiting for the machine to arrive. We visited Kündig Ltd five or six times within that

period. “There was one particular evening we used it, we got there 2 pm or 3 pm, I didn't realise how much stuff we had in the van and we left at 8 pm: we reckon that the work would have taken one man about 40 hours using the hand held sander, but we did it in about four to five hours on the machine. It was pretty unbelievable, really!” Phillip added, “Carl O'Meara was quite instrumental in the choice of sander. If you like the person and get on with the person, you are halfway there to doing business. Carl was really, really helpful and he went the extra mile. We get on so well with Carl that we have spoken to him since concerning other machinery for our workshop.” He continued, “We had never had a widebelt sanding machine in our workshop before. When my brother and I entered the business at different stages, my Dad had everything the business needed to do the job. There is always bigger and better machinery out there, but we had what we needed. “Over the last few years my brother and I have taken the business over and have replaced a couple of machines that were old and needed replacing. As we are successful and get a lot of business we have continued to invest, and with the sander we are now at the next level: it has speeded up the process. Most people have a wide-belt sander, and so this was the first thing we invested in for something we have never had. “We never had any benchmark: we didn't know what they cost or which brand was better. We received a recommendation from the guy who does our maintenance: he spoke highly of Carl and said the Kündig sander was 'the Rolls Royce of wide-belt sanding'. It was the first one we really looked at. “We did make other enquiries, but one advantage of the Kündig sander is that when you get different thicknesses with other machines you have to open up and close the machine to the different thicknesses, while on a Kündig the heads move up and down rather than the table, which is an advantage as the working height remains the same. The technology behind it is very precise: it is an excellent machine.”

TOOLING Company Closes Doors on Waste Disposal Costs A Leicestershire joinery company has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs. JCK Joinery and Spirit Doors, part of Britdoors Group, manufactures bespoke joinery and timber doors. The company decided to purchase a wood waste heater to utilise the waste timber and board product it generates daily, reducing their expenditure on heating and waste disposal. Commercial Manager, Anthony Kellett researched the marketplace to find the best wood waste heater for the company’s needs. Having read favourable reviews about UK manufacturer Wood Waste Technology, the company requested a site survey and followed up customer references provided by the MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft. Anthony says: “The range of heaters offered by Wood Waste Technology’s met our requirements, and their existing customer’s comments were positive for the product and customer service. We have a wide variety of timber and board waste and it can all be used to fuel the heater. The WT10 keeps the workshop warm, even the cold spots adjacent to the roller shutter doors. As we use more of our waste for fuel it takes longer to fill the waste skip which obviously brings additional savings. DCS Dust Plant for Major Timber Supplier Leading timber merchant West Midlands Merchant Trading has recently installed the latest dust extraction technology at its 4-acre site in Walsall, West Midlands. Stocks range from pallet wood and rough sawn timber, through to decking and specialist machined products – all of which can be supplied with a variety of different timber treatments and preservatives.

Following its acquisition by GE Robinson in 2014 the company has seen upwards of £500,000 of investment in new plant and equipment, including the recent installation of a state-of-the-art dust extraction plant complete with ECOGATE energy saving technology. Supplied by dust extraction specialists Dust Control Systems Ltd. (DCS), the new plant has been designed to extract wood dust and chips from high-performance planer-moulders and other woodworking machines in the firm’s machining shops. Paul Kavanagh, Operations Director at GE Robinson, says: “It was decided that the existing dust plant was no longer fit for purpose and we called in DCS to discuss our needs – DCS installed and maintain

our dust plants at our Salford and Garstang sites, and we have been pleased with all aspects of the service they provide. After carrying out a full appraisal of our requirements, DCS recommended a modern extraction plant controlled by their Ecogate system. This system would satisfy our extraction needs and cut electricity bills by providing the optimum amount of power to meet demand.” An externally-sited modular filter unit, capable of handling large air flows with heavy material content, was installed. The filter incorporates screw and rotary valve discharge to a woodwaste transfer system which feeds waste to either one of two 13 tonne capacity container trailers. 65,000m /hr, the system employs two 55kW, low-noise, main fan-sets and a 15kW waste transfer fan. System control is provided by two Ecogate Power MASTER® variable speed drive units, complete with integral Ecogate greenBOX® 12+ controllers. Each woodworking machine is fitted with a motorised Ecogate damper gate which automatically opens and closes as machines come on or off line. Responding ‘on-demand’ to variations in machine usage, the Power MASTER units continually adjust the speed of the fans, and optimise energy consumption. “DCS completed a highly professional installation over a time contingent four day period and everyone at our Walsall branch is pleased with the performance of the new system”, says Paul Kavanagh.

DUST EXTRACTION Dustraction Trims the Waste at Thriving DIY Factory Dustraction has installed an extraction layout for AVC (Classic Woodworkers) at a new 75,000 sq.ft. factory in Stoke on Trent dedicated to servicing growing numbers of online customers. Production director Andrew Hancock at AVC says: “A move to a new factory is always stressful but our the extraction layout, complete with all ducting throughout and disposal to an external skip from Dustraction at Stoke never gave us a moment’s hassle; it does everything it says on the tin!”. The new layout will service the needs of more than three dozen existing machines, including everything from traditional spindle moulders to 10 big CNC router/moulders. Dustraction also designed the new installation to meet the needs of an SCM Window Line envisaged for installation in October this year. The Dustrax 9X cyclo filter is technology new to AVC and generates 100,000m3 air capacity to service a joinery shop floor that has evolved to meet the needs of an online customer base. These are people who already know what windows, doors

and stairs look like and don’t need to touch them to plan for their own future needs. In the internet shopping environment, buyers go first to the sophisticated AVC website to measure and plan using software that avoids the need to get the car out to drive to an old-fashioned out-oftown retail warehouse. Those prepared to make buying decisions online join a rapidly growing customer base at AVC, one of the fastest growing joinery suppliers in the online environment. Now onliners can enjoy researching architectural joinery, hardware and fittings from the comfort of a computer chair from which they can find out what an ogee moulding looks like, or what they can expect from chamfered profiles, and they can use the internet to plan major time savings into their projects. Dustraction’s new cyclo-filter is designed to run on a 24-hour daily cycle and is guaranteed for 6,000 working hours, or three years, extracting chipboard, MDF and joinery waste and returning clean air back into the factory. StairBox is part of the architectural package at AVC, delivering quality wooden stair systems at reasonable cost using customers’ own designs and measurements for online planning; AVC also has an extensive range of wooden stair parts including handrails, balusters and fittings. Customers really do now find themselves in charge of the whole do-it-yourself manufacturing package at AVC – where they can access everything an imaginative pair of hands needs. Andrew Hancock says cyclone technology from Dustraction will help AVC maintain a clean, dust-free atmosphere and will help to maximise his customers’ budgets. “We understand how difficult it sometimes is to get a staircase built that exactly fits the space and architecture a customer has available and which also looks the way they planned in their imagination,” he says. “Our software talks customers through the process in their comfortable, though remote, home environment and Dustraction now helps us to maintain a clean and tidy working atmosphere here in the factory that we can all be proud of!”
