NEWS 30,000th Combilift handed over at CeMAT Combilift Ltd, the Irish specialist manufacturer of multidirectional forklifts, straddle carriers and other innovative handling solutions for long loads, containers and palletised goods recently celebrated a milestone in the company’s history. The 30,000th Combilift to roll off the production lines in Monaghan was officially handed over to its new owner during the CeMAT materials handling and logistics trade fair in Hanover, Germany. Managing Director Mr. Arno Sorger accepted the Combilift C14000 model on behalf of Haslinger Stahlbau, one of the major Steel construction companies in Europe. Established in 1949 and headquartered in Feldkirchen in Southern Austria, Haslinger Stahlbau also has facilities in Vienna, Munich and Dresden in Germany and Dunavecse in Hungary. Haslinger Stahlbau processes an annual amount of around 40.000 tons of steel to realise its varied construction projects – with this figure continuing to rise - and the new C14000 is its eighth Combilift. Various Combilift models with capacities ranging from 4 – 14 tonnes are in operation across its sites to ensure safe and productive handling and storage of its in part very heavy loads. Combilift has some way to go to catch up Haslinger Stahlbau’s longevity, but in terms of growth and success in the materials handling sector it has certainly made its mark since it was established in 1998. Impressive

year on year growth has enabled what started as a small company offering a niche product to now be a major global name. From its HQ, manufacturing facility and R&D department in Monaghan, Ireland, the 450 strong workforce designs, develops and manufactures a wide range of products which are exported to 75 countries. Combilift MD Martin McVicar commented: “The amount of customisation featured in every model we produce makes the total of 30,000 units manufactured to

date a very impressive achievement and I’d like to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of the Combilift team. But of course thanks must also go to customers such as Haslinger Stahlbau who put their faith in our products time and again and thus enable us to continue to be the market leader in our manufacturing segment.” For further information: Email: info@combilift.com www.combilift.com

heads of the two companies, and both stand to benefit from the agreement: Biesse Group will further extend its product range, penetrating the "niche" yet highly-strategic industry of timber carpentry (beams and structural façades), drawing on the expertise of Uniteam to enhance its range of products and applications for machining plastics and advanced composite materials. This deal is part of Biesse's development and growth project, which has seen the Group expanding its business along external lines for some time. Uniteam, in turn, will benefit from the Group's undeniable international exposure and visibility, taking advantage of Biesse's status as one of the main players on the global stage in terms of industrial

machines. These two companies of different sizes are both driven by the same core values, which place innovation and technology at the foundation of every project, and consider research and development to be essential ingredients for industrial growth. Both Biesse and Uniteam will be able to exploit this fusion to their benefit, whilst maintaining the individual identity and features that have led to their extraordinary success in their respective sectors.

REPORT

Automated Integrated Solutions from Biesse With more than 20 machines on display at Xylexpo, the Biesse Group demonstrated how anyone can seize the rich opportunities offered by the so-called Industrial Revolution 4.0, having anticipated the future needs of the market and its customers Biesse can now translate this concept in to practice. 4.0 ready technology achieve levels of efficiency which today, more than ever, are crucial for keeping abreast of the competition in an increasingly global market. Following the concept of Think4ward, the company’s fundamental desire is to remain

by the side of its customers throughout the challenges that the fourth industrial revolution will bring. Biesse are dedicated to spreading the culture of automation to all their customers, even medium sized and smaller companies in order to guide them on the path to increased competitiveness. Factories are going digital – the machines communicate with each other via automation systems and interaction software and can ‘imagine’ the product, simulate construction and carry out tests before it has ever been made.

Biesse has significantly stepped up investments in technology, new showrooms, exhibitions and targeted events, and is developing the best distribution network in the world to offer clients the best customer experience in keeping with the Think4ward concept.

The WNA range allows each of the two cutting stations to work independently of each other. This solution allows users to simultaneously manage multiple stages of a single cutting pattern, significantly reducing production times.

The Selco WNA6 configuration is equipped with the cutter module, the industry-leading Biesse solution for the automatic execution of thirdphase cutting operations. During the rip cutting machining operations, the Selco WNA6 reduces the width of the workpiece, so that the panel arrives at the next step of the process at its final size. The entire process is fully automated with no need for operator intervention.

Flexible edgebanding becomes automated: Biesse solutions support customers in the Fourth Industrial Revolution challenge. By using the Winner W4 loading system in a cell with Akron 1400, Stream A and Stream B edgebanding machines, flexible edgebanding is now automated making the process efficient with just one operator and increasing machine productivity by 25%.

The new system is a perfect combination of efficiency and simplicity

REPORT Automatic and modular: The system unloads and stacks the panels at the end of each machining cycles. Using its size measuring sensors, it creates piles of different sized panels and checks their stability.

Biesse boring range - ready to tackle anything: The Made in Biesse boring range is the only one with solutions for moving panels, both horizontally and vertically, and also guarantees optimum management of panels with more delicate surfaces. A full range with solutions for any productivity and flexibility requirements, based on our customers’ real needs.

R10 Revolver Unit The R10 Revolver Unit has always been an important part of the Vektor range. It can perform very rapid tool changes in less than 2 seconds. This means that average machining times are reduced by 40% compared with a conventional system and the routing speed is increased by at least 30% due to the HSD electrospindle’s higher power. Finally, due to the versatile combinations of available aggregates, customers can always meet production requirements, no matter how complex they are.

X-Feeder: the new compact loading solution: The X-Feeder adapts automatically to different panel formats, thanks to the automatic positioning of suction cups depending on panel size. The loader can be configured with 2 or 3 arms depending on the characteristics of the materials to be processed, and can lift panels of up to 4400mm in length. This solution can be easily adapted to any manufacturing context, occupying a reduced footprint and optimizing the production.

The stroke of genius that increases machining centre profitability: In the current scenario, manufacturing companies are increasingly having to adapt to market demand: the ability to create custom commissions and provide one-to-one solutions is imperative to production. Synchro makes it possible to machine larger lots of panels, including those of different sizes, working alongside the machining centre to position each piece without the slightest interruptions. Moreover, the integration of Synchro into production process allows for businesses to optimize their costs, as the system works completely autonomously, even without an operator present. Accordingly, precious manpower is spared and can thus be used for activities with higher added value. Furthermore, inactive machine time for panel changeover is drastically reduced, and the risk of damage to materials resulting from handling of the panel by the operator is effectively eliminated.

Automatic positioning of the suction cup bar: Supreme productivity thanks to the automatic positioning of the suction cup bar. The process never needs to be interrupted by manual interventions, leading to a drastic reduction in processing times for stacks of panels of different sizes.

Transforming A Single-Blade Beam Panel Saw Into An Angular Plant To satisfy the requirements of companies who increasingly produce items in small batches, Gabbinani presented the new FLEXCUT device (versions 1/S and 1/D). Due to its flexibility and productivity, the device can meet varying production requirements, often dictated by market trends, and at the same time maintaining an optimum level of competitiveness in terms of a fast return on investment. FLEXCUT, consisting of a mobile grippers unit whose stroke is completely independent of the main pusher, allows the cutting axis of a single-blade panel saw to be used as if it were an angular machine. This means that during the same

10 Panel & Joinery Production JULY/AUGUST 2016

machining cycle it is possible to make both longitudinal and transversal cuts, increasing productivity by up to 40% and with a space saving of up to 20%. The extreme flexibility of the device is also guaranteed by the presence of the main pusher grippers, which can be excluded from the machining area, so that strips with different widths can be secured and as a result any type of different cutting can be performed without limiting the stroke.

Planet P800 The Revolution in CNC Edgebanding Morbidelli presented a world exclusive: the latest edgebanding unit, installed on the planet p800. The new unit opitiimises profiling and edgebanding operations of the most disparate types of edgings in the same program. The new device, revolutionary in its sector, installed on a boring and edgebanding centre, allows for the automatic change of the pressure and guarantees the fast and easy application of plastic and wood edgings, as well as softforming machining operations, thanks

REPORT to the MAESTRO EDGE software, which optimizes all the machining phases and guarantees maximum productivity levels. The pressure system can be replaced during machining, without stopping the machine, to load the most suitable system for the type of edging being applied or shape being executed. Even wooden or softforming edging, which are notoriously difficult to manage on a workcentre and that used to require manual operations or special machines, can be handled with superior machining performance levels and time savings. The possibility of profiling minimum radiuses also inside the workpiece at high quality levels render plant p800, the highest performing workcentre on the market. HOMAG UK Provides Integrated Solutions for James Johnson Over the last 24 years, James Johnson has achieved recognition as one of the leading specialists in bespoke joinery, providing clients, architects and interior designers with products of exceptional quality and reliability. The company turns over £11m and works with leading names such as Overbury plc, Lend Lease and ISG, completing projects for the likes of the National Theatre, Sky and BP. Based in Dagenham, the company has dealt with HOMAG UK for many years, its first purchase being a second hand BRANDT edgebander. “The nature of our work requires that we invest in the best machinery possible,” explains Ian Silk, James Johnson’s joinery director. He continues, “Last year we were looking to invest in a CNC, a new edgebander and a beam saw. “When we carried out our research

which included evaluating four or five brands, we were extremely impressed with the quality and performance of the HOMAG Group machinery. At the time, HOMAG was planning to have a HOLZMA beam saw and a BRANDT edgebander on show at the W14 exhibition and so we did a deal to purchase the HOLZMA HPP 300 beam saw and BRANDT Ambition 1650 FC from the exhibition.”

One good thing leads to another “At W14 we also saw the WEEKE Vantage 100 CNC and the BHX 055 vertical CNC machines in action and, as one of our existing flatbed CNCs had just broken down, we made the decision to invest in both the Vantage and the BHX CNCs. “We were doing more and more panel work and realised that the BHX 055 would be good for small panels whilst the Vantage

100 flatbed machine would handle bigger panels faster and to a much higher standard. “Although we were offered a finance package from HOMAG, we decided to buy the equipment outright. Probably the biggest factor in our purchasing decision was the total integration of all the machines. Even though the machines come from different companies within the Group, they all run off software that is compatible making life much easier for our operators. We run woodWOP, MagiCut and a nesting package which are easy to use and help improve efficiencies within the business.”

WEEKE Vantage 100 nesting CNC “The Vantage 100 has made a big impact on our business. It is easy to program and is so fast. Currently, we are making a large

quantity of panels that have hundreds of holes in them and with the old CNC it was taking eight hours a panel to process. With the WEEKE Vantage 100, however, we have halved that time to just four hours, delivering an impressive 100% improvement. “The speed of the machine, however, does not compromise the quality which is much better than we could achieve with our previous set up. With the Vantage 100 we gain all round; it is simple for the team in the office to programme jobs and also easy for the machine operators to produce the necessary work.”

Versatile, accurate and fast “The WEEKE Vantage 100 is fantastic; it has a 3-axis head which gives us more versatility combined with speed and accuracy. We can do a lot more with it compared to the previous CNC and we are looking forward to attracting new business with these added capabilities. Given all this, we are expecting the machine to pay for itself within three years. “One big benefit the Vantage 100 has

given us is a competitive edge when it comes to turn round times. These days, the market is very sensitive to delivery times; customers want work on site very quickly after ordering and the new CNC enables us to minimise production times and get high quality jobs to site fast. “Another significant gain has been thanks to the vacuum system which allows us to cut right through the boards. Previously, we could not cut completely through the board; this meant we had to hand trim out each part when it came off the machine. With the Vantage that additional work is a thing of the past, the parts come off the machine and do not require any trimming. ”

“Previously the carcasses were constructed by hand with biscuit joints but now they are drilled on the WEEKE and doweled which saves us at least 50% in terms of production time. In addition, it gives us a better quality finished product which is great. “Overall, we are delighted with the investments we have made in HOMAG Group equipment and we are looking forward to continuing our close working relationship with HOMAG UK in the years ahead, ” concludes Ian Silk.

WEEKE BHX 055 vertical CNC routing and drilling “A lot of our work involves panels and carcass construction and the BHX 055 is a real workhorse when it comes to this type of production. The panels are cut on the HOLZMA beam saw, edged on the BRANDT and drilled on the BHX 055 before being put together on the bench.

INSTALLATION CEHISA Edgebander for Simply Wood The installation of a new CEHISA Compact PCS Edgebander was the final piece in Simply Wood’s panel processing workshop upgrade, joining the recently commissioned Maggi 636 Borer and Altendorf F45 panel saw, all supplied by Daltons Wadkin. Simply Wood was founded by Wayne Geater and originally had great success in general joinery and bespoke cabinet making. In recent years, as the demand for solid wood products dropped away, the focus has moved to panel processing. ‘We operate all over the country supplying to the trade mostly. We don’t advertise or actively promote our services with all business coming from referrals. It is our ability to offer high quality products with very quick delivery times that gives us the edge’, comments Wayne. ‘Our old hot air edgebander serviced us well, but with advances in edging and panel technology I wanted to make sure we could continue to deliver the highest possible standards. As with all my machine

purchases I took some time researching the market before committing to the CEHISA. The machine needed to be compact, capable and flexible. I knew CEHISA by reputation and when I saw the machine demonstrated at Daltons Wadkin it was a clear favourite’. The Compact PCS forms part of the impressive range of edgebanders from Spanish manufacturer CEHISA. At its core the COMPACT offers edging application from 0.4-3mm, and 5mm solid lippings on panels up to 50mm thick. Building on the standard specification further options for pre-milling, corning rounding, scraping and buffing can all be tailored to customers’ requirements. Increasingly popular is the DUO-MELT glue unit, designed for quick switch over between EVA and PUR adhesives. The new ‘laser-edge’ glueless edging application system can be added to the COMPACT model and above for a perfect finish. CEHISA have been designing and developing edgebander technology for

almost 50 years and are currently experiencing there biggest year yet with an explosion in sales across the world and are set to hit 1000 machines for 2016. Sole UK distributors, Daltons Wadkin, have invested in a number of showroom machines including the FLEXY, COMPACT and PRO models for customer demonstrations. ‘CEHISA represents a key brand in our panel processing machinery portfolio and, as with the case of Simply Wood, allows us to offer a complete solution for customers looking to cut, drill and edge’, comments Daltons Wadkin sales director Andy Walsh. ‘Our range of Elcon vertical panel saws, Altendorf sliding table panel saws and Kimla CNC nesting routers can all be seen at our Nottingham showroom’.

EVENTS

Decorative Elements If you're looking for the latest design ideas to incorporate into your projects, Elements, the UK’s newest dedicated furniture suppliers show, is an event you won't want to miss. The industrial look is gathering pace. But this time, unlike its cold, clinical renaissance in the 90’s, organic materials are being presented in their purest form. Architectural lines, minimalist design and thin frames are being presented in combination with rusted metal décors and untreated woods that bring a sense of warmth and individuality to the latest trend. Tactile qualities are rising in importance with décor experts incorporating soft textures like leather, linen and wool into their collections to create strong designs that exude personality and the individuality today's consumers crave. “Your senses are key when specifying a product. You need to be able to have a connection with something to truly savour it,” comments Simon Mundy, Director of Mundy Veneer. Across the spectrum, this trend is being interpreted with subtle wood grains with deeply embossed, synchronised textures you can both see and feel. Décors with floral effects, knotholes and simulated painted wood are features you'll find on the stands of David Clouting and Kronoswiss. Botanical features are growing in importance, abstract art is finding its place in the most recent décor designs, and among the most recent plain coloured surfaces to emerge, you'll find antifingerprint supermatts and high glosses as well as anti-bacterial décors with a range of applications from residential kitchens to hospital and carehome projects. On the stands of exhibitors like Döllken, part of the Surteco décor group, and Ostermann, you'll find novel ways to edge worksurfaces, counter tops and furniture pieces, adding both character and uniqueness to inspire new design ideas. Decorative hardware is taking its lead from the world of haute couture by embracing leather and textiles for added style. Highly textured and rustic finishes

from Finesse Design and Crofts and Assinder and the use of deeply coloured metals like brass, bronze and copper, add charisma and warmth to the revived industrial theme. The latest trends focus on materials, shapes and tones that work holistically with one another. Joseph Kim from the design team of Korean giant, LG Hausys, explains the latest trend: “It focuses on things that complement each other: natural things, colours like soil, faded peach, beige, grey colours that can easily take on other natural, richer colours like sky blue and grey. The industry is stepping away from vivid single tones. Instead, the key is colour gradations that bring the outside in.” LG Hausys' latest collections can be found on the David Clouting stand. Earthy hues, soft pastel shades and coordinated unicolours fit perfectly and with the announcement that Rose Quartz and Serenity have been crowned ‘Colours of the Year 2016’ by the Pantone Colour Institute, designers are flocking to insightful décor producers and edging

giants such as Ostermann and Hranipex to find their perfect match for the ‘must-have’ colours of the moment. Both will present their latest ideas at Elements. Ronan Haslette, Managing Director of wood veneer specialist and Elements exhibitor, Merena adds, “Trends are constantly changing and it’s important to keep abreast of this. Elements is guaranteed to bring ideas to life and show visitors just how dynamic wood can be. It will open up endless design possibilities and bring the beauty of wood to life. Why wouldn’t you want to be a part of it?”

To see these trends and more for yourself, Elements will be will be taking place from the 2nd – 5th October 2016 at the NEC. For more information please visit www.wexhibition.co.uk/elements or follow @Elements_Expo on Twitter for the latest exhibition news.

Passionate About Veneer In June this year PJP, together with other woodworking and interior design journalists, were invited by James Latham plc to Decospan in Menen, Belgium a European market leader in the production of natural wood veneer. They were accompanied by Miles Kember Depot Director of James Latham. Established in 1978 by Urbain Desmet, Decospan produce a number of innovative brands as well as their cutting and finishing service which enables the veneer and/or veneered products to have a consistent colour. This is a result of their controlled methodology and advanced technique. Decospan is a family owned company and the management team is headed up by third generation, Pieterjan Desmet Sales and Marketing Director and Corneel Reynaert, Wood Consultant. James Latham have established a strong relationship with Decospan over the years, stocking their many veneer designs and working with them in partnership to bring their products to the UK. Decospan have manufacturing plants in Belgium, France and Croatia and are in the process of extending their production to an area adjacent to their Menen site at a cost of 30 million Euros to accommodate future developments. The trees supplied to Decospan are FSC, meaning they are sourced from responsible, sustainable management suppliers who have signed up to their Pure Wood Charter. The company is very aware of sustainable energy with 30% of the factory power being generated by solar panels installed at their production sites. The remaining 70% is green energy purchased from energy suppliers. In addition Decospan have invested in wind energy – the two wind

turbines in the industrial areas are a source of sustainable energy. The lighting for the storage facility which houses racking for 17 million Euros worth of veneers comes on by sensors when someone enter the aisle and then automatically switch off when not required. A certain amount of veneer sourced from exotic areas of the world – areas where species of tropical timber which may have an export ban. This has not been a problem for Decospan as they have the expertise and facilities to copy the design, texture and colour of these trees which they market as ‘Look Likes’. The formula is a closely guarded company secret! The Decospan “Tree House” was opened in September 2015. It is a marketing suite with 27 of the most popular wood types on display. A catalogue is available which includes an overview of all wood types and in addition Decospan have developed a veneer bible with A4 size samples of all 165 types of wood. The premium service in the Tree House offers a total experience of the various possibilities that veneer can offer – with more than 150 types of wood permanently in stock. There are modern facilities for dining with a built-in kitchen, specially equipped meeting rooms for architects, furniture and interior designers who are welcome to visit by prior appointment and experience for themselves what Decospan have to offer. Decospan also have six sales offices in Europe – Belgium, France, Croatia, Germany, Ireland and the UK. They will also be opening a new office and showroom in Clerkenwell, London very shortly. There will also be a Decospan display at James Latham’s new showroom at the Design Centre in Islington, London. Here are some of Decospan brands: SHINNOKI – Prefinished Wood Panels, launched in 2008. A range of ready-to-use finished veneer panels. Edge fishing – available in both veneer and ABS. QUERKUS – Oak – launched in 2014. A collection of oak veneered products.

NØRDUS – Larch, Spruce, Pine, Birch – launched 2016. The Mixmatch technique offers a collection of eight designs. LOOK LIKES – Made from real wood but not from the actual wood species. The top layer veneer is glued to chipboard, MDF, blackboards or plywood in different thicknesses offering endless design options. An ecological answer to exotic wood veneers. DECOFLEX – a jointed sheet of veneer sheet, first pressed onto paper. The wood fibres are then broken and finally pre-sanded with

a 150 grain. This gives a flexible sheet of wood veneer as an application for bended surfaces, edge bandings, door frame veneers and pressing panels, as it is able to bend without cracking. DECOROLL – A permanent stock of most popular wood species, reinforced with fleece, sanded and not pre-glued. CLICWOOD – veneer flooring. PAR-KY – veneered parquet flooring. CABBANI – Custom made parquet flooring.

Synchronised Texture Across Range is an Industry First The Feelwood range from EGGER brings together a new, carefullycurated collection of its most authentic, deeply-textured, melaminefaced chipboard panels. Since the introduction of more realistic Feelwood decors with their deep synchronised textures, and the look and feel of rustic raw timber, demand has soared in the furniture and interiors market. EGGER believes that bringing the ten premium MFC decors together with perfectly-matching laminates and ABS edging in one collection will make it easier for designers and specifiers. “Interest in our new authentic woodgrains – featuring knots, cracks and saw-cuts – has been tremendous,” said EGGER’s head of décor development Elliott Fairlie. “Whether it’s an on-trend kitchen, a hotel bedroom or an office interior – demand for something that looks and feels like real wood continues to grow. But the advantage our products have, apart from price, is that you get surfaces that are durable, sustainable, maintenance-free and offer colour continuity now and in the future. “We have made a multi-million pound investment in new production lines in the UK and Europe that use computer-controlled printing plates, and a double paper layer on our MFC boards, to give the deepest and most-realistic textures currently available anywhere.” “What if I told you this wasn’t real timber …” EGGER is the first wood panel manufacturer to offer synchronised pore – where the textured finish aligns with the grain itself – across all of its boards. The Feelwood collection includes hardwearing laminates, ABS end-grain edging and sleek compact laminates as well as melamine-faced chipboard. Feelwood is available in ten decors, some brand new introductions

and others a fresh take on popular classics – including H1180 ST37 Natural Halifax Oak, H1181 ST37 Tobacco Halifax Oak and H3342 ST28 Sepia Gladstone Oak. But common to them all is the authenticity theme – reflected in EGGER’s advertising strapline for the new range: “What if I told you this wasn’t real timber….” Available double-sided with both surfaces deeply textured, the Feelwood Elegance ST27 and Feelwood Nature ST28 decors also have a single-sided option with a non-synchronised reverse for where a lower cost product is required.

David Clouting at the Gherkin In a world with a constantly changing landscape, it is time to apply today's technologies for tomorrow's society. Everything about ourselves today is different to that of ourselves 50 years ago, and yet we still build using the same 50 year old materials. We are all becoming more savvy on our social responsibility and good design. On Thursday 21st April David Clouting to support this movement, held a design and innovation seminar for Interior Film and Deco Foil on the two top floors of the Gherkin, by flying over one of the top designers for LG Hausys to share his inspirations and vision! The audience was a mixture of some of the best architectural practices, interior designers and fitout companies in London. These events are successful at triggering the thought process through the whole design team, architect, contractor and end user staff etc to a more collaborative approach to occupied space! We spoke of new organic textures inspired by Nature, and how refacing in place of replacing can suit all expectations of finish, seeing the revival of PVC demonstrating new technologies for Super Matt and Gloss with finger free finishes, not forgetting airfree self adhesive systems. The event was a huge success and the credit goes to the attendees of whom without their commitment to their careers wouldn't be possible. Some of the feedback is reported below!

Scott, one of the top designers for LG Hausey, opening the seminar

Rethink Interiors - What a fantastic evening – amazing venue, great presentations, and a fabulous bunch of people! Special congratulations to Scott for handling the Q+A so well and answering all our questions on a unique product. Our team came away inspired and well fed and watered! Many thanks for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. “Thanks for the event last week. We really enjoyed it.” “It was fantastic! Thank you for the invitation. We had such a good time!” “Thank you for yesterday’s seminar it was really nice to see the product and of course I cannot put my words to the fantastic choice of the venue!” “Was really nice meeting you yesterday and thank you again for the invitation, I really enjoyed the event and I am really interested in using the products.” “Very well organised; Scott was a natural master of ceremonies; we learnt more product knowledge from the talks and lastly, did some good networking. So, all in all, a great success.” “Just wanted to email to say thank you for the hospitality and informative and interesting seminar, it was an amazing venue which showcased your products in real style” “Catch up later but I just wanted to congratulate you on a very successful event last night.” “It was a great event, not just the venue but the presentation was amazing. Extensions to the unicolours include some serene neutrals, playful pastels and vibrant eye catching brights. A FINSA presentation of decors would not be complete without paying attention to texture and the beauty of combining the appropriate texture and colour to create the perfect environment. FINSA unveiled 2 new and unique textures applicable to all colours in the GAMA DUO range. FINSA NUDE is a texture which flawlessly imitates both the look and feel of real leather. NUDE offers an aspect of warmth and elegance to any interior space. The FINSA ATLAS texture is a subtle interplay of gloss and matt pores which replicate the intricate detail of real wood veneer and manipulate the impact of light. The ATLAS texture applied to FINSA's new oak decors takes these intelligent wood grains to the next level of flair and elegance. To accompany the new decors, FINSA led the audience through an interactive demonstration of the GAMA DUO app. Available on any smart device the app is an easy tool which users can use for scanning the QR code of any dĂŠcor from the GAMA DUO brochure, downloading images of decors and roomsets and inputting sample requests.

PROFILE Norbord To Highlight the “Legendary Performance” of its MDF Range Norbord is launching a drive to promote its CaberWood range of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) – one of the most versatile modern building materials. MDF is made by compressing millions of tiny wood fibres together with a resin under high temperature and pressure. The resulting board is tough, easily worked and ideal for a mind-boggling range of building applications – from architraves and mouldings to furniture and fittings. Norbord can boast one of the widest ranges of MDF products currently available. Five grades are available from the basic lightweight general purpose grade (CaberWood MDF Trade) to the top-of-therange CaberWood MDF Industrial, a hardworking, deep routing, moisture-resistant product with uniform density all the way through the board. Each designed for a specific range of duties, the five products in the CaberWood MDF range offer unbeatable quality and “legendary” performance; something that Norbord wants more people to know about.

To raise awareness of these superior products, Norbord is embarking on a promotional campaign. The campaign draws its inspiration from this summer’s European football championships, explains Norbord Brand and Communication Manager, David Connacher: “Football is the largest spectator sport in the UK and to be able to resonate our tagline of “legendary performance”, it made sense to tie in with the year’s biggest sporting event that will, no doubt, feature some legendary performances,” says David. Euro 2016 will be the focus of a lot of media attention in the run-up to June and during the four weeks of the championship so Norbord hopes its campaign will strike a chord with football-loving builders. “Yet the theme of “legendary performance” will continue beyond July,” says David. “We want to increase the visibility and awareness of the CaberWood MDF brand as well as the three key messages of the features and benefits of the board – finish, routing capability and screw holding. We

Vollmer Carves Through Blades with New Grinding Machine The processing of metal-cutting saw blades has now been simplified even further with the recent arrival of the new Vollmer Loroch Evolution K850-M. Taking over the mantle of the 'benchmark machine' from its predecessor, the new K850-M is packed with new features to improve automation and operator experience. When creating the new Evolution K850M, Vollmer's aim was to develop an efficient, powerful and economical machine for grinding metal cutting saw blades that would suit the small to medium sized customer. By consistently applying proven Loroch methodologies, this goal has certainly been achieved. The K850-M incorporates an impressive new CNC control unit that has a 19inch touch screen for intuitive programming that avoids faulty inputs and reduces set-up times. Blades can be programmed in a matter of minutes with data-entry inputted directly at the machine, on the large colour display that uses symbols inspired by Smartphone's. As well as processing HSS saws, the new machine can grind solid carbide saws and friction saw blades with ease. The Loroch carves through a selection of blades credit to its powerful direct-drive grinding wheel configuration that reduces power loss and eliminates undesired vibration that can impact blade quality. With manual and

Operating from a 25,000 square feet workshop near Tunbridge Wells, All Scene All Props offers a full range of services, from initial design concepts, materials specification, in-house construction and onsite installation, with the ability to handle all kinds of project regardless of size or complexity. The comprehensive in-house production facility includes specialist carpentry, engineering and scenic arts sections, together with a full-scale space to enable every project to be pre-built prior to delivery. The AXYZ router now installed at the

company is a single-head AXYZ 6012 model with a bed size of 2.1m (width) x 3.6m (length). It includes a seven-station ATC (Automatic Tool Change) facility to help speed up production and accommodate different tooling requirements. As managing partner Piers Ross explained: “Purchase of the AXYZ 6012 CNC router was facilitated by the generous trade-in discount offer made by AXYZ International that enabled us to partexchange our old AXYZ 4008 router for this new and higher-performance model. This has resulted in significantly increased production levels and faster turnaround on the work we undertake.” The router is used to process a wide range of disparate materials used in stage and related constructions. These include hardwood, plywood, medium-density fibreboard (MDF), aluminium composite materials (ACM), aluminium, acrylic and plastic sheets, polyurethane foamed boards and high-impact laminates. Piers Ross added: “We use the router for virtually everything we need to process. It is a massively versatile production workhorse which is easy to work with and which, unlike other similar production machinery, does not raise any health and safety issues that need to be addressed before use. An

added benefit is that we can now source all of our tooling requirements from AXYZ International’s 24/7 online CNCRoutershop facility.” In common with all AXYZ routers, the 6012 model can be supplied with a host of additional machining options. These include the AXYZ Auto Zone Management function that ensures the material being processed is always held securely during the routing/cutting cycle and the latest A2MC machine control system for optimum precision and smooth operation. The A2MC has a massive 16GB of memory for program storage and provides network connectivity for error-free program transfer. A further optional production tool enhancement is the latest AXYZ helical rack and pinion drive system. This incorporates a multiple gear teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to greater routing/cutting accuracy, faster throughput speeds, reduced material wastage and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. As to how the AXYZ 6012 has performed since installation and the service provided by AXYZ International prior to, during and following installation, Piers Ross concluded: “In a single word, the router has performed ‘flawlessly’. The service provided by the AXYZ International team has been exceptional, with help and advice always available if required. In addition to servicing all of our core manufacturing requirements, the router has also enabled us to offer a CNC machining facility to other companies who need to outsource this particular production requirement.”

INSTALLATION Kimla CNC Router for Redco Norwich based REDCO is a specialist manufacturer and supplier of machined plastic materials. Established in 1981, the company has been meeting the demands of its increasing customer base with continual investment in its machine shop technology. The latest addition to the impressive lineup of CNC lathes and milling machines is the Kimla BPF2131 CNC router. The BPF is equipped with a 2100 x 3100 mm matrix vacuum table, 9 kW spindle, automatic tool changer, full CADCAM software suite and the impressive Dynamic Vector Analysis System (DVA) that enables the machine to operate up to 900 mm/sec (54 m/min) at an accuracy of 0.001 mm. ‘The Kimla BPF is by far our most popular CNC model’, comments Daltons Wadkin director Alex Dalton. ‘The Kimla’s diversity for working with almost any material makes it ideal for customers across a range of manufacturing sectors including furniture, joinery, sign and shop fitting, aerospace and automotive as well as educational establishments. The powerful but intuitive software is easy for operators to pick up and allows quick access to all machining parameters right at the

machine. It can work independently or be fed by other third party CADCAM software’. REDCO managing director, Mike Redshaw, has built the company’s reputation over the past 35 years providing high quality, reliable machining services for plastic materials. ‘During the first few years it became obvious that East Anglia wanted not just a knowledgeable, reliable and competitive plastics stockholder but also a machining service too. We began by subcontracting out all the jobs we won but it was soon apparent that we needed complete control of quality and lead times if we were to provide the service demanded by our customers’. Mike continues, ‘We bought a couple of manual lathes and set up what we laughingly called our machine shop – we learned very quickly that this was not enough. We continued to invest in newer and better machines and more highly skilled staff’. Daltons Wadkin has seen increasingly high demand for the Kimla range of CNC machines with sales for 2016 up 80% on last year. ‘We keep at least one Kimla BPF

model in stock, usually with a 2100 x 3100 mm bed which is ideal for nesting full sheets of plastic or wood based panels, says Alex. ‘I always encourage customers to visit our Nottingham showroom to see the Kimla in operation. You can only really appreciate the substantial build quality and machining capability when seen in the flesh’. REDCO now operate all over the UK and further afield. Mike continues, ‘It’s been a very stimulating journey for me and it is by no means over yet – a younger generation is taking REDCO into new areas of excellence and indeed new parts of the globe. A number of new products such as Acetate, Tri-Acetate and Aluminium Composite will ensure the future continues to be exciting and stimulating for all at REDCO. The Kimla is a key tool to our growth and we will be looking at purchasing a second later in the year.’

SOFTWARE Complex 5-Axis Programming Made Easy With Alphacam A shopfitting company has doubled the output on its CNC router, driven by Alphacam, in the last two years. The Wensley Group provides a bespoke design, manufacturing and installation service to the retail, leisure, education and healthcare sectors, manufacturing shop counters, pub bars and back fittings, staircases, doors and windows. While Alphacam CAD/CAM software plays a part in the design and production process for around 95 per cent of their jobs, CNC programmer Mark Greening says it really comes into its own on 5-axis staircase work. “Even straightforward staircases can be quite complex on the CNC machine, but the bigger and more complex-shaped ones with features such as curves, tangents and scrolls, would be almost impossible without Alphacam. “If the shop floor were to make even a simple, straight flight of stairs manually, it would take between three and four days. Using Alphacam I can do it in half a day.” When he joined the West Midlands company around two years ago, neither their Alphacam Ultimate nor the 5-axis 36-tool Reichenbacher CNC router which it drives, were being deployed effectively. “I invested time in developing how we used the machine and getting the tooling right. We’re still improving on that, but Alphacam gives us the confidence to try anything on it.” Five-axis work is becoming increasingly important, and he says the complexity of the shapes and curved handrails that he produces with Alphacam has surprised a number of people at the company. “Some of the designs we’re asked to work with are virtually impossible to make any other way.

32 Panel & Joinery Production JULY/AUGUST 2016

“Everything I do goes through Alphacam, starting with designing the products, through to them coming off the router.” He utilises many of Alphacam’s extensive CAD features, from a very basic aspect of drawing a line, to creating a surface. “When I’ve finished the design I move on to programming with the CAM operation. We work with a selection of tools, and because everything’s done onscreen I can run a simulation to see what works and what doesn’t, before we come to the machining stage. Alphacam shows us if the product we want to cut is fully machineable. “We can receive the work as a copy of a drawing which I then redraw in Alphacam, or the client may send a full architectural drawing where I simply break it down into the components and program them in Alphacam, or I may be asked to draw something entirely from scratch based on the client’s idea.” Even after the program has been sent to the machine there may be occasions when it needs to be amended. “All we do is switch the toolpaths off and change the lines were necessary without having to redraw or reprogram it.” He says many of their staircases have handrails that are twisted as well as curved, which are readily produced in Alphacam using polylines, splines and surfaces. “A lot of them need to be drawn almost freehand to produce what’s needed for the machining, and it would be quite difficult to do using a solid model package.” Retail contracts often call for a complete shopfitting service involving counters, point-of-sale stands and window displays...and with pub refurbishments requiring bars and the

full back-fitting, Wensley Group use a wide range of materials, including ply, MDF, hardwoods, softwoods, Tricoya panels and Corian. Mark Greening prefers to go on-site to personally measure up, ensuring his Alphacam drawings are accurate first time. “If I’m given a full architectural drawing instead, I’ll break it down in to all its component parts – tops, fronts, sides – right down to the skirtings, so every component goes on to the Alphacam drawing, ready for programming with the toolpaths.” As their work is almost entirely bespoke he is constantly called upon to produce different jobs, all with different components, so he says each job has its own unique challenge. “But being able to draw it in Alphacam and get everything right on screen first is absolutely invaluable. The software is now an integral part of our production process.” Always using the most up-to-date Alphacam release keeps them at the forefront of CAD/CAM technology, which he says is vital to get the best out of the Reichenbacher router. And on the rare occasion they need guidance on an issue the Alphacam support team are always quick to resolve it. “One piece of 5-axis code wouldn’t work on the machine, so I sent the program to Alphacam through their support portal and they altered our post processor. We were back up and running with a perfect program just a few hours later.” For further information: Wensley Contracts: www.wensleygroup.co.uk Alphacam: www.alphacam.com

Leading German Kitchen Manufacturer Switches To 2020 Insight Since early May, German kitchen manufacturer, Hummel Küchenwerk, has been con-trolling its entire kitchen production with the 2020 Insight software solution. From graph-ical quote generation to installation planning with subcontractors, all processes are mapped and processed in 2020 Insight. “We opted for 2020 Insight,” says Hummel MD, Matthias Flick, “because it is the only product on the market, as far as we know, that provides continuity in production control.” The graphical quote generation facilitates the planning of all types of kitchens which is an important factor for the North German market leader in the B2B sector as they supply many developers and home building organisations with their products. “In addition to a wide range of variants we also repeatedly receive special or bespoke requests,” Flick continues. This high variability must also be taken into account in the secondary processes. Sven Heinrich, Head of Projects at Hummel explains: “Due to the large number of variants we offer customers, our software requirements were very high. 2020 Insight gave us the option to develop and implement visual workflows which

enabled us to respond to all requirements. The flexibility of the solution and the tools provided allowed us to adapt the system so that it fully meets our needs.” With the continuous support and advice from two 2020 employees throughout the whole project, the first complete kitchen was produced in February as a test run. Cor-rection requests and improvement ideas were developed and implemented as soon as possible in the software solution. “That way we could ensure a smooth transition from the old to the new control system,” says Sven Heinrich. Project colleague, Thorsten Schmidt, adds: “It was also important to us that all transi-tions between the different departments were clearly defined and that no unnecessary disruptions occurred. Regardless of whether it is the planning, the machine connection for cutting, edging and front drilling, capacity or requirement planning, accounting or installation planning: all areas interact with each other and ensure effective and efficient manufacturing processes.” Matthias Flick concludes, “We can even integrate our project planning for individual B2B sectors, so that we now have an ‘all-in system’ and do not have to

SAWS The HOLZMA HPS 320 Flextec – A Fully Automated Beam Saw Specifically Designed To Process Single Panels Launched at LIGNA 2015, the HOLZMA HPS 320 flexTec is a world first – a unique robotic beam saw specifically designed for the processing of single panels. This new cutting cell completely redefines low batch production and single part flow, with fully automated processes and unlimited recuts. “For batch size 1 production to work efficiently,” explains Simon Brooks, HOMAG UK’s sales and marketing director, “it is important to group as many parts of an order as possible in one cutting pattern. This, however, requires at least one, and often more, recuts. “Using a manual saw, recuts result in considerably more work in terms of parts handling, whilst with an automated process multiple recuts entail complex transport equipment to return the parts to the saw. “Until the launch of the HOLZMA HPS 320 flexTec, a completely automated process with just one cutting line was not feasible. This is because of the high levels

of manual work involved. Parts requiring recuts have to be temporarily stored by hand and then manually returned to the saw. As a result, error rates increase and overall production costs rise.”

Unlimited recuts handled automatically The new HPS 320 flexTec, however, is a real game changer. A user-friendly and easy to maintain cutting cell, it can be connected to an automatic horizontal storage system from HOMAG Automation or integrated into an industrial production line. Its intelligent modular design enables cutting lines to be configured according to customer specifications and customised in terms of both part flow and output. Simon Brooks again, “The core component of the HPS 320 flexTec is an industrial robot with a specially developed suction traverse. This ingenious robot looks after the entire handling of panels, parts

and strips until all the recuts have been completed. “After the first rip cut, the robot lifts the strip, rotates it to the correct position for the cross cut and then places the strip on a purpose-designed side machine table, known as a strip buffer. This strip buffer which is controlled by software, feeds the strip back to the rear machine table. Here, the strip is automatically aligned and positioned over the cutting line by the clamps. “If a recut is needed, the robot places the part on the rear machine table or temporarily stores it, depending on the cutting pattern, on a buffer area above the pressure beam. This makes it possible to complete unlimited recuts automatically, without errors. “Finally, the robot collects the finished part from the front machine table and places it, correctly rotated for the next machining station, on the outfeed conveyor.

The integrated robot ensures zero error rates, rapid throughput and materials handled with total care

This conveyor can include an optional automatic labelling unit to ensure that every part that leaves the HPS 320 is correctly labelled for easy identification.”

Zero error rates and materials handled with total care Unlike humans, the robot doesn’t make mistakes, consistently delivering a zero error rate. It also handles the panels and cut pieces with precision care, despite the fact that its speed far exceeds that of humans. Another big benefit of the HPS 320 flexTec is its small footprint, achieved mainly by the clever positioning of the robot. This cutting cell features just one saw body, one programme fence and one waste removal system. It also dispenses with the need for a turning device. By specifically designing a machine for processing single panels, HOLZMA has

been able to achieve exceptional energysaving dust extraction via the right-angled fence. Special dustEx combination air jets on the machine table direct dust and shavings for extraction horizontally.

Optimal use of energy and resources “Overall,” concludes Simon Brooks, “this new cutting cell from HOLZMA takes automation to a new level. Everywhere you look, the HPS 320 flexTec delivers significant gains. “Material yields are increased because of the flexibility in cutting pattern layout. Waste is reduced thanks to the extra thin saw blades specifically designed for this single-panel saw. “The fully automatic cutting process reduces manpower requirements to a minimum, with just one machine operator needed to monitor the entire system. Further savings are achieved thanks to

longer tool service life, ecoPlus technologies in all parts of the machine, minimum maintenance requirements and less waste. “When you add it all up, the HPS 320 flexTec packs a mighty big punch. It is set to revolutionise batch size 1 cutting processes and will provide the perfect solution for bespoke manufacturers.” If you would like more information or a demonstration of the HOLZMA HPS 320 flexTec beam saw, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

specifications to meet individual customer’s requirements. A full working demonstration was arranged at the Daltons Wadkin Nottingham showroom so that Mercia could see a Salvador machine put through its paces. There are a number of alternative configurations available and after examining these with Andy the model chosen was a Salvador Superpush 250 Optimising Saw with twin aligners, 6200 mm infeed pusher, 150 mm cutting depth and a chain side loading system. This allows the machine to run continuously with minimum effort from the operator (bar loading the timber onto the feed chains). There is also an automatic outfeed ejection system synchronised with the cutting cycle, ensuring no loss of time when cutting.

The waste trap door activates rapidly with the off-cuts dropping onto a waste conveyor. The new machine has been installed and running at Mercia’s headquarters in Suttonon-Trent for some months now and is revolutionising their manufacturing process. The machine has increased Mercia’s throughput and accuracy – the S250 being PC controlled provides full cut information for each shift and Malcolm Marriott (Operations Director) can see at a glance the impressive performance provided by his new investment. Mercia have cut six million metres of shiplap, cladding and framing in the first 12 months since the machine was installed and on one occasion recorded 37,000 metres in one day! Andy Walsh enthused, “We were so pleased to have the opportunity of providing this superb crosscutting technology to Mercia Garden Products and we were confident from the outset that the equipment provided would perform to and even beyond expectations. We have known Mercia for a number of years and although we are supplying Salvador crosscuts to all parts of the UK it is especially rewarding to have this opportunity and make such an impact within our own county of Nottinghamshire.”

Striebig Demonstrates the Art of Sawing at University The University of Northampton is the latest in a growing roster of educational establishments to benefit from the introduction of a Striebig vertical panel saw. Its wood shop within the School of The Arts recently installed a Striebig entry-level Compact 4164 and staff are delighted with the numerous improvements it’s delivering. Richard Hawkes, the technical demonstrator for Woods, spends a lot of his time sizing sheet material into components wanted by students for their creations. This covers a variety of wood-based panels - mainly plywood, MDF and chipboard - as well as acrylics and the occasional sheet of Perspex. “We used a small table saw for panel cutting before but it was not the easiest way to do things,” he said. “The panels, measuring 8ft x 4ft or 10ft x 5ft, needed a great deal of manhandling to push them through the saw blade. Now it’s a simple job to place a panel onto the Striebig, which avoids a great deal of bending and back twisting.” As well as the important health and safety benefits of reduced manual handling, Richard Hawkes said the other main advantages of the Compact over the table saw were its accuracy and ease-of-use. “The accuracy is brilliant,” he said. “The Striebig gives us a much cleaner and smoother cut every time, which shows in the students’ finished work when compared with components cut on the table saw.

“It’s also extremely quick to set up and easy and safe to operate, so I really can’t fault it. The day it was commissioned I had a lesson from the machine’s installer and was perfectly happy to begin using it right after he had gone. I had a big smile on my face that day.” With a cutting range of 3100 x 1644mm (10 ft x 5 ft) and a maximum depth of cut of 60mm, the Compact 4164 guarantees impressive dust limit values of well below 1mg/m3. Richard Hawkes said the strip cutter supplied as an option with the saw was ideal for making fast and accurate repeat cuts when small pieces needed to be sized. As an example of the time saving being achieved, he recently had to cut 88 8ft x 4ft sheets of MDF into 8ft long narrow lengths for a student’s installation. “We stacked the sheets five at a time on the Striebig,” he said. “I reckon that doing the job on the table saw would have taken about five times as long. With sawing speeded up like this, I can now spend far more time with students to talk about their requirements.” Due to its versatility the saw is also in demand to size sheet materials for students taking Architecture and Product Design courses. The decision to buy the Compact was made by Dr Richard Hollinshead, senior lecturer, Sculpture and Spatial Practice, who has had extensive experience of using a Striebig at

other educational establishments. “I knew how good they are and was perfectly happy to specify one for our Wood Shop,” he said. Models in the nine-strong Compact series offer a cutting range from 3100 x 1644 x 80mm to 5350 x 2200mm. There’s even an automated cut cycle version, the Compact AV, which makes them even more productive. All Compact machines are based on a single, fully welded sawing frame to give decades of reliable service whilst maintaining cutting precision. They can be wall-mounted or freestanding and can cut practically all wood-based sheet materials as well as timber, plaster board, plastics, composites and aluminium panels. The purchase was part of an investment programme in new equipment prior to the School of The Arts moving into the university’s new £330m Waterside Campus, which is due to open in 2018. Striebig saws are available from sole UK sales agent, T.M. Machinery Sales. They will be exhibiting on Stand B610 at the W16 Joinery and Furniture Manufacturing show at the National Exhibition Centre in October.

SANDERS The All New BÜTFERING SWT 200 Series Sanding Machines – Compact High Performance For almost 70 years, the BÜTFERING brand has stood for high performance widebelt sanding machines and innovative surface finishing. The all new BÜTFERING SWT 200 Series carries on that tradition offering highly flexible and compact sanding solutions. Machines in the range efficiently perform calibration and fine sanding of solid wood and wooden materials as well as veneer and lacquer sanding up to full panel widths of 1350mm. The BÜTFERING SWT 200 Series models are all constant pass line machines which means the feed table height is constant providing a more heavy-duty and reliable solution. Each machine in the range is controlled via a 7” colour touchscreen with a user-friendly graphic interface. As with all BÜTFERING machines the attention to detail is extremely high, for example, the machines have earthing straps to eliminate static which can have a negative impact on dust extraction and sanding performance.

Advanced work piece thickness measuring The machines all feature automatic thickness adjustment from 3 to 200mm (previously 150mm) and a constant working height (900mm) via adjustment of the upper frame of the machine.

Work pieces are fed into the machine on a variable speed (3-15m/min), high quality multi-ply conveyor belt. The parts are guided through the machine with springloaded rubberised pressure rollers positioned close to the sanding heads.

Comprehensive selection of head types The SWT 200 Series offers a choice of four heads which can be specified in single and twin head configurations to give seven different machine types. All the heads feature a simplified head locking system which enables quick and simple changing of sanding belts. Designed for flat surfaces, the combination L-Head uses a contact roller for calibration and an air cushion sanding pad system (acp) for fine sanding applications. This pneumatic pressure pad system delivers the right pressure over the entire working width. In the same way, the combination CHead also features a contact roller for calibration but with the addition of the electronic pneumatic pad system (eps) for sanding. The machines’ electronics ensure the optimum sanding pressure on all areas of a work piece. The pressure pad consists of separate segments which are applied to match the work piece shape. Offering thickness tolerance compensation of up to 2mm, the system is perfect for intermediate and fine sanding of solid wood, along with veneer and lacquer sanding. The R-Head has been designed for calibration and preparation of surfaces to provide a mechanical key for glueing. It is very efficient with high stock removal rates whilst avoiding the so called ‘wash-out’ effect.

Oscillation marks are a thing of the past

The new BÜTFERING SWT 225 Optimat – compact high performance

A new addition is the inclusion of an H-Head which leaves no oscillation (snake) marks and sands at lower temperatures to increase the lifetime of the sanding belt. Featuring a chevron belt, the H-Head

delivers a smooth and extremely consistent surface finish making it most suitable for veneer, lacquer and filler sanding. It also offers a wide range of useful grit sizes up to P1200 grit.

Quick change brush system A useful option for the SWT 200 series is the quick change cassette brush system with cleaning and texturing brushes available. The glazing brush is recommended to smooth and to emphasise pores on lacquered surfaces whilst the wire brushes create that in vogue weathered or distressed look. “Yet again, with the SWT 200 Series, BÜTFERING has come up with a great range of machines,” claims Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG UK. He continues, “Whilst it may not look that different from the outside, the engineers at BÜTFERING have started with a clean sheet to ensure that every little detail of this powerful wide-belt sander is perfect. “Taking this fresh approach has enabled them to create a flexible, reliable, high quality sander all within a very compact footprint. The range and combinations of heads to choose from allows every machine to be tailored to each customer’s specific needs and I am certain demand for this SWT 200 Series will be high,” concludes Brooks.

SANDERS London Furniture Designer & Manufacturer Go For a Kündig Michael Northcroft is a British furniture designer and maker with an international reputation for excellence. All the furniture is made at the extensive London factory and showrooms located near London's Olympic Park. Founded by managing director, Michael Northcroft, in 1982, the company has built up an impressive exclusive client list who, like Michael himself, demand the very best. To achieve this, Michael invests in machinery: along with a brand new saw and a brand new edgebander, he has invested in a Kündig Brilliant-2 1600 REd sander, purchased from Kündig Ltd's authorised agent, A12 Machinery of Essex. “I use Albert [Holland of A12] because he has the right machines,” Michael said. “The former sander was past its sell by date. It was also only 1,100 mm wide, and we needed a larger sander because we are making increasingly larger high end furniture to fit the space in our clients' homes.” The Kündig sander is 1,600 mm wide. Michael had a short list of two manufacturers: the Kündig won out on a number of points. “ The machine has an excellent reputation. I also like the stability of the management at Kündig and hence the high standard of quality control,” Michael said. “I also checked with service engineers what their experience was between the two

manufacturers: they ticked the Kündig box. And I am more used to working with a Kündig: we had one many years ago which was a lovely, simple, heavily built machine, so I had a predisposition to Kündig at the beginning. “There is a certain logic to the design. If someone gets the concept right and thinks about it at the early stage, you get a better product. You can tell that Kündig has been through that process repeatedly over the decades. The sander has its own computer, so our operators don't have to get into the intricacies: things are preset. They only need to worry about how much to remove, at what speed, with which belts and how many heads. “The Kündig is an expensive beast, but you do get a high quality job out of it. “We make very high quality furniture. Our client base includes many international stars, performers, sports people around the world so we need high quality sanding. The furniture is tailored to their homes and the quality has to be really good. We also use a lot of exotic veneers and woods in our furniture. The Kündig minimises ripples and defects in high class lacquers. “We also sand our solid wood components on it. A multitude of solid wood components go into our furniture. The Kündig is highly accurate: you get the dimension out that you set the machine to. There is no burning, you get a very clear

finish and it is wonderfully trouble free. “We produce quality from the log to the finished furniture, so we need the very best in terms of machinery to minimise the rejection rate. It is inefficient to have to send things back to the cabinet makers: and the Kündig sander has removed pretty much all of that agro. “The machine is quiet: you don't have to wear ear defenders! If you can create a quiet, dust free machine shop, with natural daylight, that is lovely for the guys. Some processes are inherently noisy so ear defenders are required, but it is better for the men if it is possible to work without them. “It is a really good machine, I am really pleased with it. I would not recommend it if you have a really tight budget, but if you need a really high quality machine that is hassle free, the Kündig is excellent and yes, I would recommend it. “It is also a really easy machine to use. It is nice and wide, and can sand components 1.5 m wide. It has a much higher quality finish: there are no unsanded pieces. The Kündig sands the whole surface in one pass, and it has never sanded through the workpiece. We are also reassured because we have known the chap who services the sander for a long time, not that we have had any issues in terms of maintenance. “Buying the best quality machines works out cheaper in the long run, if you look after it. Machines such as the Kündig make the logic for manufacturing in the UK,” Michael concludes. For further information: Tel: 0845 833 0565 Email: sales@kundig.co.uk www.kundig.co.uk

WOODWASTE Wood Waste Technology Helps Timber Business Become Greener and Leaner One of the few ‘green’ sawmills in the UK is proud to have reduced its heating and waste disposal costs by installing biomass heaters from Wood Waste Technology. Great Barr Sawmills is an independent, family-owned timber yard supplying hardwood, softwood, plywood, doors and skirting with over 65 years of experience in the trade. The business was started by Director, Jamie Jones’ great grandfather in 1949, and then passed to his grandfather, and is now run by Jamie and his dad. It operates from a large, bright red building on a 1.2 acre site in Great Barr, and employs around 20 staff. After the company experienced various problems disposing of its wood waste via skips, the directors decided to find out more about biomass technology. Seeing the benefits for the business, Jamie has now purchased 3 biomass burners from Wood Waste Technology, giving each of the 3 buildings at Great Barr Sawmills its own wood waste heater. Jamie explains: “As our business grew, the costs of waste disposal kept increasing, and we reached a point where we were struggling to dispose of our wood and MDF waste, shavings and chippings through traditional methods, so had to look for alternative solutions.“ Jamie discovered Wood Waste Technology’s website, and after finding out more information about the benefits, initially ordered a WT10 for the machine shop. DUST EXTRACTION

DCS Extraction Delivers On New Pallet Line Leading dust extraction engineers, Dust Control Systems (DCS), have recently installed a new energy-efficient dust extraction system for specialist pallet manufacturer, Industrial Pallet & Transport Services (IPTS). Based on a three-acre manufacturing site at Ferrybridge, Yorkshire, the family-owned and operated firm is a major producer of new and refurbished pallets. Run by husband and wife Nick and Lee Bennett, IPTS produces around 20,000 pallets per week with large quantities of pallets always held in stock. Over 500 cubic metres of FSC certified, home grown British timber goes into producing their high quality pallets every week, and the firm holds the coveted international ISPM 15 quality standard for production of heat treated pallets. “Recent investment in a new automated pallet manufacturing line meant we had outgrown our existing extraction plant,” explains managing director Nick Bennett. "DCS had supplied us with dust plant in the past and we brought them in to discuss our changing needs. After carrying out a full appraisal, DCS recommended a modern extraction plant controlled by their

Ecogate system. This system would satisfy our extraction needs and cut electricity bills by providing the optimum amount of power to meet demand.” For the contract, DCS installed an externally-sited NFSZ modular unit, fitted with high-performance ‘Superbag’ polyester filter bags. It has an airflow capacity of 14,500m3/hr and is capable of efficiently coping with varying loads of wood dust and chips. Incorporated into the main ducting system is an ATEX-approved CARZ backpressure flap valve which prevents the effects of a dust explosion from travelling back along ductwork. The compact filter plant is fitted with a rotary valve which discharges waste ‘pressure-free’ into a closed loop conveying system that transfers the waste directly into a box cart. Additionally, an emergency bulk bag discharge system is included. Energy saving measures involved the installation of an integrated ECOGATE greenBOX12 controller, in conjunction with an ECOGATE PowerMaster variable speed drive, which automatically adjusts the speed of the main extraction fan as machines come on line or shut down – resulting in significant power savings over a traditional fixed-speed system. The result is a highly-efficient dust extraction system, which provides precise extraction volumes only when needed. It is expected that the

Compact DCS modular filter plant fits into limited space in IPTS yard.

ECOGATE system will reduce power usage by around 60%.
