Medite produced its 6 millionth cubic metre in Europe. Laid flat, the 8x4 sheets in 18mm would equate to 52,083 football pitches, or cover the London Heathrow site just over 27 times. pecialist shopfitting and commercial interiors company, Lambro Contracts Ltd, have invested in a Homag BOF211 CNC router – the first CNC machine to be installed in the company’s high-tech Wickford workshops in Essex. Lambro Contracts Ltd produce joinery to the highest quality as reflected by the stature of their customers. They work primarily in the hotel, retail, residential and casino sectors for companies like Hugo Boss, Hilton Hotels, Les Ambassadeurs Casinos, Luxe Restaurant and also in the leisure sector for spas and treatment rooms in hotels and high end residential sites. Factory Manager Paul Black says that decision to finally invest in a CNC machine was to increase, capacity, accuracy, quality and flexibility. Following rigorous research of the CNC market, Lambro decided to opt for the Homag router based on its reputation, superior engineering and all the advantages of dealing with the world’s premier woodworking machinery manufacturer and their extremely well established sales and service division in the UK – Homag UK based at Castle Donington. Homag UK’s Charles Smith worked closely with Lambro Contracts Ltd in terms of assessing the current and future requirements and arrived at specifying a Homag BOF211 CNC router with a matrix claming table (also equipped to take additional clamping pods or jigs), a 12-plate tool changer and high-tech CNC control unit supporting advanced Homag WoodWop software. Lambro Contracts Ltd have to process a high quantity of sheet materials and panel components and the matrix bed on the BOF211 allows them to do so on a nesting basis - obviating the need for a panel saw. However the powerful 4-axis BOF211 is also required for

S

processing solid wood products – primarily doors and door frames. To do this the matrix clamping table is easily adapted to accept individual clamping pods or the in-house manufactured jigs that Lambro have constructed. The Homag BOF211 was installed in April and Paul Black says it has been running faultlessly: “We’ve really grown into this machine – the more we use it the more work it seems to find for itself. It has given us real advantages in terms of production and delivery times and produces precision work all the time.” Lambro Contracts Ltd sent their operators for training at Homag UK and are now getting the most out of the router. As a result of the investment they have been able to transfer a significant amount of manual work within the factory. Lambro say that by installing the Homag machine they are able to show their customers that their service quality continues to improve and that the investment will go on to securing not only the high level of repeat business they enjoy, but also go a long way to expanding new market opportunities.

Better Than Expected W8 for SCM Group UK With all the “Doom and Gloom” leading up to the recent W8 Exhibition at the NEC, many exhibitors feared that very few visitors would turn up to the show, but the SCM Group were pleasantly surprised with the number of visitors attending their four stands and the level of enquiries and orders taken over the 4 days of the show.

CM Group UK’s Managing Director, Gabriele De Col, commented after the show “We committed ourselves to four big stands during the boom days of 2 years ago, in order to show our full range of SCM and Hi Tech Panel Division machines. Several new machines to the UK market made their debuts at W8, including the Windor 1 CNC Window Line, a Superfici Spraying machine, Sergiani Presses, Accord CNC Machining Centre with unloading device, K300 Edge Bander, Morbidelli Universal CNC Machining Centre and the Gabianni Galaxy T3 Beam Saw with rear loader. Our continued success is due to the very wide range of machines SCM can offer to all sectors of the market.” A number of new classical machines were displayed including the new TI 155EP Class Spindle Moulder, T220 Class Tenoner, SI 400EP Class Panel Saw and the full range of Tecnomax Spindles, Panel Saws, and Planer Thicknessers. Very popular were the electronic display panels with the CNC controls from the classical machines that customers could try for themselves before purchasing a machine. Demonstrations on all the machines displayed were continuous and fresh supplies of MDF and MFC panels, plus some hard and softwood, had to be hastily ordered at the end of day 3 for

demonstrations on the last day of the show. Concluding, Gabriele De Col stated “All my staff worked very hard before, during and after the show to make sure it was a success for us and a number of orders across our wide range of machines were taken at the show much to my surprise, plus a number of orders that will be confirmed in the next couple of weeks, including 3 Ergon CNC Machining Centres. I am not going to put any figures or values on the machines we sold yet, only to say we are relatively happy with the W8 Exhibition and we are very well set for 2009, even if the market is not as buoyant as we would like it to be. SCM Group UK will be around for years to come to assist all their new and existing customers and we have some very exciting news to announce to the market in the next few weeks.” For further information: Tel: 0115 9770044 Email: scmgroupuk@scmgroup.com Hi Tech Panel Division Tel: 0115 9777818 Email: hitechuk@scmgroup.com

Homag Success at W8 here was much speculation – even anxiety – in the build up to the W8 exhibition at the NEC that took place at the end of October. Homag UK always approached the show with positivity and optimism in a difficult economic climate. The Homag stand – their largest ever – was geared to demonstrate that superior Homag Group technologies and systems are available to forward thinking users at every industry level. From start up 1-3 man operations through to large scale industrial manufacturers geared to high volume. From craftsmen and bespoke furniture manufactures to big joinery works, fabricators and shopfitters, there was something for everyone on the Homag stand. On their second stand and in association with sales partners Young Black, Homag and timber frame specialist partner Weinmann had an equally successful show. Whilst overall exhibition figures were 11% down compared to 2006, Homag’s stand attracted a high number of visitors. There was a regular flow throughout the four days. Despite the economic climate, a very good number of orders were taken directly at the show. In addition a significant number of quotations were generated and many are expected to turn into orders in the coming weeks and months. Homag UK managing director Paul Cooper says that there remains confidence and optimism for the long term in the industry. Clearly times are difficult, but the strength and breadth of the Homag Group

W8 Enquiries Hold Up Despite Fewer Visitors, says T.M. Although visitor numbers to W8 were unfortunately down compared with two years ago, we were quite pleased that the quality of those coming on to our stand was still very high,” said Matt Pearce of T.M. Machinery Sales, exclusive UK distributors for the Swiss-made Striebig range of vertical panel saws. “Despite there being less people around we received a good level of enquiries, especially for the top-of-the-range Striebig models like the Evolution and the Control. “There was also a very good reaction to the new Compact AV model which we were showing for the first time. With manual feeding of the saw unit eliminated, the operator’s job is made much easier, giving him time to prepare the next sawing job. This was a feature that was met with approval, particularly from those who were running small businesses. “Having said all that, it was quite clear that potential customers were less prepared to place orders on the stand than at past shows. This has to be a reflection of the current difficult economic conditions which we all face.” However, he stressed that if the number of positive leads received during the four days of the show were turned into the expected sales, “W8 will have been a success for us.”

pecialist woodworking machinery distributors and engineers Daltons benefited from the opportunity to display their ‘new look’ at the W8 exhibition. The show gave the company an opportunity to display a host of products, some of which were new to their portfolio, including Houfek CNC Machining Centres, Salvador Optimizing Crosscutting Systems, all new Elcon ‘Quadra’ Vertical Panel Cutting Machine, Fravol Edge Banders, Vertongen Single End Tenoner, Houfek Max Heavy Duty Wide Belt Sander and the Kuper 6-Head Planer Moulder in addition to a range of Stenner Band Resaws, Diplomat and Wadkin Classical machines, etc. Daltons showed faith in the W8 show once again by taking more space than ever before and according to Director Francis Dalton their faith has been justified. “The enquiry level proved unexpectedly high bearing in mind the current economic situation” said Francis, “We have excellent enquiries to follow up and in spite of the doom and gloom projected by some of the media a number of significant business opportunities have come our way as a direct result of our presence here”. Daltons highlighted for the first time their Engineering Support Services Division and here again interest levels were high. Service Director Cliff Sharp was delighted with the interest shown in the company’s engineering, service and aftercare facilities. “We have been talking service contracts with a number of significant players

Hoffmann Pleased With W8 offmann Machine Company’s UK managing director says that their participation at W8 (still referred to as Woodmex by most of their customers and visitors) turned out to be a reasonable decision. “It was better than expected since we’d come here fearing the worst” says John Galvin. “We were still able to take a satisfactory level of orders and seem to have a reasonable level of enquiries to work on” he says. Renowned for inventing the unique dovetail key system for jointing, Hoffmann showed the versatility of the system on their stand for an extensive range of applications. From creating simple and compound mitre joints the Hoffmann system can also be applied to complex haunch and overlap joints and in is easily strong and secure enough to be used in beam construction. Hoffmann also demonstrated examples from their wide range of single and multi-function machines for the application of their system. Martin Sharpe Continues Expansion with SCM Group nyone previously visiting the old factory of Martin Sharpe, or MS (Midlands) Limited to be precise, would have marvelled how they produced their quality range of doors and panels from such a rabbit warren of buildings. How two SCM Ergon CNC Machining Centres were installed and continuously ran always amazed visitors to the tight manufacturing facility. Unable to increase capacity and efficiency, a move to a new, larger manufacturing unit was inevitable when Martin Sharpe wanted to expand his business, and therefore earlier this year, a move from Quarry Bank, in the West Midlands, to Cradley Heath took place, with both factories running simultaneously to ensure a smooth transmission without disrupting output. Starting work as a joiner, Martin Sharpe commenced manufacturing purpose made joinery for the building industry and domestic market in 1981. Then, in 1996, he purchased his first CNC Machining Centre, an SCM Record 220. The machine is still running well, machining doors and rebating doors for glass mirrors some 12 years on.

Martin Sharpe with operator alongside one of 2 SCM Ergons Like many door manufacturers, and with the advent of the membrane pressing of doors, Martin Sharpe needed more production of MDF door blanks and decided to purchase his first SCM Ergon Machining Centre with the assistance of SCM’s CNC Area Manager, Ian McCarthy. With a single routing head, the first machine was quickly followed by the purchase of a larger, second Ergon fitted with 2 routing heads and 24-station automatic tool changers. Production increased dramatically with the installation of these 2 Ergon machines. At that time, all the programming was manually done, but very soon, AlphaCam Cad Cam was purchased, followed by AlphaSim, Licom’s business management system. Martin Sharpe is a great believer in having the latest technology, whether machinery or software, and regularly invests if he feels the expenditure warrants the purchase. Martin Sharpe is not into mass volume production, but in his words “We offer a bespoke service to our many customers that are spread throughout the UK.” He manufactures doors and panels for kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and home offices that have distinctive clean, crisp edges and high accuracy profiles in a very wide range of finishes and colours, with high gloss being very popular at the moment. A wide range of designs are offered with the option of accessories such as alcove units, pelmets, skirting and palisters.

feature The SCM K500 ER2 edgebander The move to the new premises really excited Martin Sharpe as he also begun installing all his products in his customer’s showrooms, and this brought an immediate response, with customers regularly sending their orders to Martin Sharpe electronically. In turn, with office systems now in place, the orders are immediately processed with direct links to the factory, selecting board colour, nesting on the Ergon CNC’s, followed by glue spraying and pressing on Burkle Membrane presses. Just after the move and with the luxury of increased production space, Martin Sharpe purchased an SCM CNC Boring Machine, a model CYFLEX F900, for the boring of hinge holes in doors, again from Ian McCarthy. Martin Sharpe comments “SCM helped me move all my machinery and re-installed it in the new factory and at the same time I decided to purchase the CYFLEX, which has helped us tremendously boring the hinge holes in our finished doors.” In addition to door production, many of Martin Sharpe’s customers are now asking for carcasses, so as a one-stop-shop and as “Part of the Service”, an SCM Single-Sided Automatic Edge Bander, model K500 ER2, complete with corner rounding, was installed a few months ago, with the MFC panels being nested and machined on the Ergon CNC’s. Concluding, Martin Sharpe states “The move to our new factory has enabled us to increase production dramatically, offer more products, install a showroom and give us more office space. With the help of SCM and their wide range of machines and great Service back-up, we are confident for the future and we will continue to invest to gain more market share, but the most important thing is to give our customers exactly what they want, top quality products delivered on time.” For more information: Martin Sharpe Tel: 01384 415470 SCM Group UK Tel: 01159 770044 Email: mking@scmgroup.com

Reilly Brothers Rely on Homag ased at Longford in the Irish Republic, Reilly Brothers was established in 1979 to design and make quality fitted kitchens and bedrooms. The company has expanded steadily since then and now employs over 30 people while remaining a family owned concern. Partner Michael Reilly says that their customer base has expanded to cover both the whole of the Republic and Northern Ireland with important customers on the UK mainland as well. Reilly Brothers manufacture fitted furniture for their own ranges as well as offering a fully bespoke service for customers at the middle and top end of the market. “We are able to supply kitchen and bedroom furniture for 3 bedroom semi-detached houses right through to €50,000 installations for country mansions” explains Michael Reilly. Reilly Brothers have always had a policy of investing in fit-forpurpose and state of the art production equipment which has seen them develop a long standing and fruitful relationship with the Homag Group through Andy Jones. While always investigating the whole machinery market when upgrading their facility, Michael Reilly says that Homag have become a preferred supplier and technical partner as they are always able to provide tailored solutions, reliable and accurate machines and excellent back-up and service. The latest machines to be supplied and installed by Homag have arrived over the last 3 months as part of a significant single order and are both specialised and equipped to the customer’s specification. To upgrade their panel sizing capacity Reilly Brothers have installed a Holzma HPL380 rear loading precision beam saw with a special Ergomat de-stacking device fitted at the outfeed squaring fence. The Holzma was chosen not only for the current and future capacity but also for precision cutting of MFC and long term accuracy. Holzma are the world’s largest manufacturer of beam saws and have developed cutting edge system, innovations and solutions to maximise output. These include sophisticated software-driven optimised machine movements and cycle times such as optimum movement of the pressure beam and positioning of the patented “shark’s fin” side alignment device. Dimensional accuracy is

The Brandt single-sided edgebanders installed at Reilly Brothers delivered by a combination of the side alignment systems and the precise positioning of the program fence which uses contactless magnetic encoding that offers long-term precision. The chip-free cut – so essential for seamless edgebanding – is ensured by the patented Holzma mono-rail saw carriage guidance system which guarantees absolute alignment of the scoring and main sawblades. The second machine installed is a Brandt single-sided KDF7702C edgebander which is a very special hybrid model embracing a Homag top belt pressure feeding system and an EVA and PUR gluing system. The Brandt has a feed speed of 20m/min and offers a maximum edge thickness capacity of 15mm which Reilly Brothers will use for including solid lippings in their designs. The edgebander is also fitted with a Ligmatech ZHR-05 panel return device making it a truly one-man operation. To complete the system, a Weeke BHX500 throughfeed machine has been installed. With 35 drills, an X+Y grooving saw, a powerful router, and multi horizontal drills operating from top and bottom simultaneously or individually. This allows dual panels to be drilled and processed on a tandem or purely individual basis with, once again, true single operator control and the option of auto feed and off-loading. The Weeke BHX500 has proved one of the most instantly popular and best selling CNC processing centres worldwide. It offers enormous flexibility and very high output. With these new high-tech Homag Group machines in their workshops, Reilly Brothers are now positioned to move forward to their next phase of expansion by delivering greater design scope and ever increasing quality.

wo years ago, Moores Furniture Group of Wetherby, West Yorkshire, part of the Masco Group, identified a requirement to increase the capacity of the panel cutting area. Investments had been made in the edgebanding and drilling operations leaving panel cutting as the bottleneck process. Moores traditionally used two large Angle Beam Sawing Plants for breaking down their MFC and MDF 5600 x 2100mm full-size sheets into cabinet and door panel sizes. However, the flexibility of Angle Plants is extremely limited, so the Production Engineers at Moores decided to examine the panel saw market for alternative solutions that had to be one man operated. Drilling and edge banding capacity was satisfactory but panel sawing was an increasing problem. The main criteria given to all potential suppliers was “Flexibility”, not only for current production requirements, but for any future needs should production requirements vary. After a detailed survey and exhaustive negotiations, Moores opted for the Gabbiani Galaxy 125 panel sawing system supplied by SCM Group UK’s Hi Tech Panel Division, based in Nottingham, with SCM’s Area Manager, Kelvin Wilkins assisting the sale. The Gabbiani 125 is a single-line beam saw but fitted with a number of devices at the infeed and outfeed that makes the saw unique, such as the facility for making a variable position external head cut that splits the fullsize sheet into 2 manageable components. Paul Robinson, Moores Development Engineer, explains “We needed to put the head cut where we wanted it to provide the best yield from the board. The largest piece is then rip-cut into strips followed by cross-cutting. The smaller piece is held in the machine with the option of turning it or sending it out of the machine for rip and crosscutting later on.” “We also wanted the saw built to allow maximum flexibility for our future requirements, by adding a crosscutting station or, for example, be positioned at the start of a strip line. Integration of handling systems was essential, as it simplifies the control issues. With the Gabbiani, we have Mahros handling, that is built in the same factory as the Gabbiani saw, so linking was easy, the Mahros having 6 stacking stations, all controlled by software on the saw PC. The Gabbiani / Mahros system has been installed for 10 months and provides all types of MFC panels for kitchens and bathrooms plus MDF blanks for PVC wrapped doors. Additional sawing capacity has been easily achieved now with more variety and smaller batch sizes evident and the ability to receive more complex cutting patterns from Moores “Secant” Optimisation programs. Moores operatives had to be re-trained as the Gabbiani provided a different way of working with panels having to be turned manually, but because of the saws flexibility, any objections have long been overcome. Concluding, Paul Robinson commented “The Gabbiani was installed by both Gabbiani and SCM UK installation engineers who stayed with us until we were fully happy with the equipment. A few software issues, expected with a new type of machine, were quickly overcome, and the after-sales back-up has been very good with no major issues arising. “Flexibility” was the major consideration for ordering the Gabbiani for the present and our future needs and we can see the many benefits the saw has already given to Moores Furniture Group.”

Blades Slices Through Panels with Two Striebig Saws highly successful Kent-based joinery business that specialises in carrying out work for some of London’s most affluent residents has bought two Striebig vertical panel saws to boost production after moving into larger premises. Blades was formed by joiners Paul Wilcox and Shane Armstrong in 1996 to carry out work for wealthy property owners in London, mainly in the Kensington and Chelsea areas. Its two new Compact 5207 models are used chiefly to size MDF panels. The pieces are then either stained, sprayed or spray lacquered, or covered with leather, suede or a spray-on suede finish, as specified. As well as a standard blade the saws were supplied with a scoring blade for use with veneered MDF panels and 13mm thick Corian used as kitchen worktops. The Compact is the entry level model of the Striebig range. The 5207 version has a cutting range of 4600mm x 2070mm and a cutting depth of 60mm. It features as standard powerful TRK dust extraction, with a dust limit value below 1mg/m3, 17 panel support and transport rollers, adjustable blade penetration, and a powerful 3.9 kW motor. Among the optional extras available are a digital measuring system, an angle cutting unit, a strip cutting gauge and a grooving accessory for composite panels. The saws, together with Al-Ko extraction units, were supplied by Striebig’s UK distributor, T.M. Machinery Sales. With contracts received from leading architects and designers, Blades’ skilled joiners produce bespoke wardrobes, bathrooms, kitchens, plasma walls - also known as feature walls or media walls – as well as doors and staircases as required. In addition to using top quality woods and veneers, stainless steel, stone and leather are often incorporated in their work. Domestic contracts represent 60% of Blades’ turnover, which has included the fitting out of luxury yachts. It is also active in supplying high-end office fit-outs and reception areas for top City companies. After outgrowing its original premises, in May Blades moved into

The site is conveniently located 40 miles south of London, with plenty of room in which to expand in the future. Among the company’s first machinery purchases back in 1996 was a nine-year-old second hand Striebig Econom model. Partner Paul Wilcox said: “It has been regularly serviced by T.M. Machinery and is still as good as new. Because we were so pleased with it, and the service we have received from T.M., when we decided to buy two new vertical panel saws we decided not to look at any other makes. T.M. and Striebig have given us excellent service over the years.” He added that the “accuracy, quality of cut and ease and speed of use of the two new saws were excellent.” They were bought as part of a £100,000 investment in new equipment to coincide with the move to bigger premises. This has also included a flat bed panel saw, a cross-cut saw and three stateof-the-art spray booths. “When we set up the business we decided not to go for small jobs in the local area or into mass production,” said Paul Wilcox. “We have been very successful in targeting top-end property refurbishments in London.” Blades has a staff of 16, including project managers, CAD technicians, joiners, an apprentice, and sprayers, with fitting work subcontracted out. The joiners are responsible for a complete job from start to finish, with all of them trained to use the new Striebig saws. After being assembled, to ensure everything fits together correctly, items are dismantled for spray finishing before being packaged and labelled ready for delivery. “The average job takes us from between eights months to a year to complete, with our biggest contract to date taking 18 months. “To help us produce top quality work we employ only first class tradesmen, which we are always looking to recruit, and provide them with the very best quality equipment, which is why we have chosen Striebig for all our panel cutting.”

Combilift Celebrates 10 Years of Innovation ombilift Ltd, the world’s leading supplier of long load handling solutions, celebrated its tenth anniversary with an event that attracted over 100 journalists and key customers from around the world to the company’s global HQ in Monaghan, Ireland. Visitors from across Europe and as far away as Australia and North America enjoyed a full programme of events including helicopter trips piloted by Combilift’s technical director Robert Moffett, the final of the UK Driver of the Year Competition, “dancing forklifts” a press conference and visits to local Combilift customers. Attendees had the opportunity to talk to Combilift engineers and watch the design process in action during tours of the premises, and visits to the assembly lines gave an insight into the production processes of the wide range of Combilift models available. There were plenty of spectators for the four regional finalists of the UK Driver of The Year Competition, (South: Roy Cleaver from Alsford Timber, North: Mark Thompson from GAP, Midlands: Alan Cooper from Timbmet, N. Ireland: Jeff Cairns from Sam Mouldings). These drivers all demonstrated their considerable skills in controlling and manoeuvering a C4000 Combilift throughout a tricky course devised by Combilift together with leading

training provider Mentor Training. Results were announced at the beginning of the press conference, with the trophy for the overall 2008 champion going to Alan Cooper, who works at the Shellingford branch of timber supplier Timbmet. The last event of the morning saw the newly formed Combilift CB Display Team give Riverdance a run for its money by demonstrating the extreme manoeuvrability of the new CombiCB with a precisely choreographed and very entertaining “dance routine”. A video of this can be found on the Combilift website under the “news” section. Visitors had the chance to see the Combi-CB in action at one of the first customers to sign up for this new model in April 2007. Maurice Graham Builders’ Providers stocks the very diverse range of product that one would expect to find at traditional merchants, and uses a 4t conventional Combilift for handling packs of timber and bundles of steel. In another area, pallet racking is used for the storage of other products such as pallets of cement and packs of insulated board and panel products. The Combilift’s new Combi-CB versatility of the new all-round Combi-CB multi-directional forklift lends itself perfectly to such a scenario as it copes easily with the palletised goods, but can also be deployed for handling longer products such as boards or pipes when necessary. Speaking at a dinner reception in the evening, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Brendan Smith praised the contribution that Combilift has made to the local as well as national economy, stressed the importance of innovation in the current market, and thanked the assembled customers, journalists, distributors and employees for their continued support. Ten years ago Combilift was a small scale operation employing a handful of staff on a brand new concept for the materials handling sector. The Combi-CB is more compact than the traditional counterbalance forklift and has the added advantage of multidirectional operation and is therefore ideal for any customer who handles palletised good and long-length products. Available in LP Gas, Diesel and Electric this new 2,500kg (6,000lbs) capacity is available in lift heights of up to 7.5m (25ft). Its rubber tyres give the advantage of indoor/outdoor capabilities. Combilift will provide potential customers with a proposed layout drawing free of charge to show their possible storage when considering the Combi-CB for their operations. With the launch of the Combi-CB, Combilift have expanded its premises by 2,000ft² to cope with the additional volume of output. This new model will increase turnover by 10m Euros during 2009 and create 20 additional jobs, with an estimated turnover to reach 100m Euros, one year ahead of Combilift’s projections publicly set in 2006.

provision of handling solutions for long loads. Combilift was formed in 1998 by highly qualified engineers, Martin McVicar and Robert Moffat, when they developed the world’s first powered multi-functional forklift designed to fill a gap in the materials handling market. Until the Combilift was launched there was no one single forklift capable of providing the sage and space saving handling and storage of loads in confined spaces. The new manufacturing facility in Monaghan was opened in 2006 and is capable of producing over 2,000 units per year. “In just ten years Combilift has grown to be the global leader in the long load handling market,” said Martin McVicar. “We currently have over 9,000 units in operation with capacities from 2-5 to 14 tonnes in over 50 markets worldwide. The unique offering of the Combilift can bring increased manoeuvrability and space savings to nearly any business that involves the transportation of long loads.” Since the introduction of the original Internal Combustion (IC) powered Combilift, the company has, on average launched a new model each year. To commemorate its 10th anniversary, Combilift consolidates its position as the global leader in multi-directional forklifts with the launch of the Combi-CB, a revolutionary new product, identifying

It takes away many of the laborious jobs, allowing staff to get with the more interesting work, and speeds up production.” Initially bought for panel processing, the CNC has enabled Daystyle to take on joinery work, something Mr Day would not have considered before. For example, he recently completed a contract to make 65 solid oak window frames, all carried out on the Masterwood. Iona Joinery, of Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland, uses a Masterwood Project 416L. Owner Pat Moynihan said: “One of the big advantages is that you don’t need a trained joiner to operate it, which frees up skilled staff.” Using Masterwood’s MasterStair software, he can now design and produce a staircase in four hours, compared to a day-and-a-half using traditional methods. The machine is also being used to produce arched work and door sets. Owner Richard Mant said: “It has meant we have more than doubled our output without any additional overhead costs. We have gone from making five to six staircases a week the traditional way to upwards of 20, with no extra staff. This is a big plus in these tough economic times.” His Masterwood Project 300 has also enabled the company to extend its product range by adding a less expensive range of stairs to its portfolio. At Teesdale, Co. Durham joinery Alan Heavisides is reaping the benefits of using a Masterwood Project 415L. Owner Alan Heavisides said: “We initially increased output by 20 per cent while we are now employing four less people, achieved through natural wastage. “A spinoff has been more organisation in the office and in production methods, largely due to the paperwork produced by the CNC machine. “We hope to increase sales by 30 per cent this year, which will mean employing more semi-skilled workers and perhaps sales and office staff, and also plan to invest in another CNC machine from Masterwood.”

Masterwood’s Project 300 has allowed The London Staircase Company to double output without taking on any extra labour

CPC Rely on Homag orthern Ireland’s Cookstown Panel Centre (CPC) is one of Ireland’s major suppliers of panel products, quality components, fittings a variety of associated products. A core aspect of CPC’s product and service is supplying cut and edged boards to order. These sheet materials range from plywood to MDF and MFC and also the latest lightweight panels like Egger’s Europanel product. Key to CPC’s production facility are Homag Group edgebanders and beam saws that have been supplied and serviced by Northern Ireland Homag agent Electro-Tech based nearby at Moneymore. CPC’s MD, Gerry Mallon, says that over the last few years they have invested around £600,000 in Homag machinery – Homag Brandt single sided edgebanders and two Holzma beam saws. “We are careful to only invest in the latest technology and best engineered machines” explains Gerry Mallon. “We also took into consideration the fact that Homag UK have a highly qualified agent in Electro-Tech with their own fully trained engineers close to hand”. Cookstown Panel Products was acquired by the OSB Group in 2004, a move which, Gerry Mallon believes has been very beneficial for CPC’s customers as OSB has invested heavily in the business. “Since becoming part of the OSB Group we have been able to provide our customer base with new value added products and now proudly also have new state-ofthe-art premises.” In business for 30 years now, CPC’s new facilities bring the company's operating area up to 100,000 square feet and allows them to increase capacity,

product quality and delivery through the investments in machinery. The most modern of the Homag Group machines installed is the Holzma HPL380 high capacity beam saw with a rear loading and lift facility. The saw derives its legendary accuracy through a combination of side alignment devices – including the patented “shark’s fin” pressure sensitive alignment device that can work with even very thin and flexible boards and veneers. The main program fence positions the boards perfectly under the pressure beam and over the cutting line using a contactless magnetic system that does not wear and end up with progressive inaccuracy. The excellent quality of cut is delivered by Holzma’s patented mono-rail saw carriage guidance system which ensures prefect and long term alignment of main and scoring blades. This ensures a chip-free edge that can be presented to the edgebanders for a blemish-free bond. Gerry Mallon says that the Homag machines are totally up to expectation and performing faultlessly and that the entire investment has helped take CPC to a new level and put them in a strong position for the future to serve their customers throughout Ireland.

reenpeace has made a strong environmental case for the UK construction industry to use sustainable products like Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) - OSB as a cost-effective alternative to illegal plywood. Its latest report, ‘Setting a new standard: alternatives to unsustainable plywood in the UK construction industry’, is a practical guide for companies wanting to avoid the use of illegal plywood on construction sites. The report shows that there is no technical reason why unsustainable tropical hardwood plywood cannot be replaced with alternatives such as Forest Stewardship Council-certified (FSC) OSB, which can be locally sourced, competitively priced and is already readily available on the UK market. The report is welcomed by Norbord’s Environmental, Health & Safety Director Steve Roebuck who sees it as a strong endorsement for using sustainable products like Norbord’s FSC–certified SterlingOSB. “At Norbord, we ensure that all of the wood used in our manufacturing processes is sourced from sustainably-managed sources. In Europe, all fibre is FSC-certified. “Also, all our European products are CE-certified which means they are ‘fit for purpose’. However, today we are seeing plywood entering the UK that has been questionably CE-marked and this is currently being investigated by trading Standards,” he added. Greenpeace said that, despite the best efforts of some UK

construction companies, the majority of the sector continues to use illegal and unsustainable plywood. This is often manufactured in China, and commonly comes from the rainforests of Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Brazil. The report highlights a number of prestigious government refurbishments that have used illegal and unsustainable plywood in the past, despite government promises to only purchase timber from legal and sustainable sources. Greenpeace Forest Campaigner, Mariana Paoli, said: “Tropical forests are being destroyed to make way for throw-away products like plywood. It’s time for architects, specifiers and construction companies to clean up their act and we hope this report will provide the motivation for them to take action on this issue.” Greenpeace is pushing the UK Government and the European Union to adopt legislation which would make it illegal for companies to buy timber products not coming from legal and well-managed forests. Steve Roebuck concluded, “We are very supportive of the Greenpeace report as we have been raising the issue with the government about the negative effects of non-sustainable timber logging and illegal plywood.”

The project, located on a plot of land adjacent to an old industrial site complete with lime kilns in Midlothian, Scotland, ran into difficulties when planning delays led to the summer build being delayed until the harsh Scottish winter. The unrelenting wet winter weather meant traditional flooring,

EGGER’s WEYROC® Protect was specified by local timber merchant, Thornbridge Timber, in Dalkeith. It is specifically designed to shrug off prolonged exposure to damp conditions and provides a safe working platform thanks to its special anti-slip finish, which provides excellent foot-holding properties for site workers at height. All White Now n line with the current trend for white across all areas of interior design, Europe’s leading wood-based panel manufacturer EGGER has developed the most comprehensive collection of white decors available in the UK today. Popular decors in EGGER’s portfolio include Woodline Cream (H1424 ST22), a textured larch decor, Premium White (W1000 ST9), currently the brightest white on the market and new worktop decor Platinum White (W980 ST82), which combines white with a rugged, deep-set texture. Andrew Sanderson, EGGER UK product manager said: “We began developing and expanding our white decor offering as soon as we identified it becoming a key theme back in 2006, when we launched our Premium White (W1000) decor. “Gone are the days when cream, beige, and off-white trends ruled the day. Clean, bright whites are a top pick for 08/09. The trend for using white across the whole of a room was clear to see at this year’s Milan furniture show, and was presented in both matt and gloss, but also increasingly with texture.” White decors can also form the basis for colour accents or combinations with dark and often very distinctive and exotic woods. As a result of this trend of black and white combinations, EGGER launched Hacienda White (H3078 ST22) and Hacienda Black (H3081 ST22) in May. Both decors have a linear grain but with natural curves similar to that of a softwood to provide a clean, modern look for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, and creates a timeless elegance. Hints of grey can be seen throughout the design which softens the

contrast when the two decors are combined. The colour neutrality of the Hacienda decors also makes them very versatile and capable of combining with a wide range of colours. In addition, the deep ST22 undulating surface texture adds real depth both visually and to the touch. Looking to the future and staying ahead of the competition, EGGER is once again taking the lead with its range of new decors. Proof once again that they are industry leaders in design competence. Decorative Panels – Glossing Over Things ecorative Panels’ new laminating line by Hymmen will be raising standards of gloss finishing to a wide range of substrates, including dp-lite, for 2009. Its flexibility and quality standards will put Decorative Panels in a league of their own for surface finishing a broad range of wood based panel materials. Finishing to a wide range of specifications in gloss has been addressed in the development of the new line – it will apply everything from top quality 1.0mm acrylic gloss materials through 0.25mm PVCs, gloss papers already in the Decorative Panels portfolio and a range of CPLs in roll form. And the line will also operate in conjunction with an unusually wide range of

substrates including MDF, chipboard, hollowcore, plasterboard and ply. To celebrate the commissioning of the new line the Huddersfield paper foils lamination market sector leader has launched a new brand for gloss: dpreflections. And in support of the brand is a new swatch pack of gloss foil samples totalling a stock range of 16 standard unicolours with additional gloss finishes also available to special order. Under the new dp-reflections umbrella will be the Ultimate range which includes high-gloss ABS foils from 0.75mm to 1.0mm in thickness and supplied with a protective foil overlay. Gloss foils can be double-sided with either two different colours, or can be in single colour form backed by a balancer. The Premier and Select ranges cover alternative high quality high gloss options. Gloss foils are available in 1220mm widths and in various length alternatives from 1830mm to 3660mm and can be laminated on to a range of panel substrates. These include chipboard, MDF and plywood, of course, and also DP’s own hollowcore dp-lite at 22mm, 35mm and 50mm thicknesses. Hollowcore boards are gaining massively in popularity for their ability to generate furniture with a chunkier feel including kitchens with thicker end panels and shelves with a truly luxurious feel. Some vertical market applications also are picking up on new dp-lite, particularly in caravan manufacture where top class finishes for doors and worktops actually come with light weight advantages. And the range of fittings and connectors that has grown up around dp-lite and its increasing take up in the marketplace is burgeoning. Decorative Panels are now recommending everything from screws, hinges and drawer slides developed to make best use of the 5mm MDF skins and in conjunction with which, fittings and components require no additional support.
