W10 Dates Announced The W10 Working with Wood trade exhibition will be held at the NEC Birmingham 3-6 October 2010. “The event should be well placed to provide the essential showcase for the UK industry as the economy recovers,” said exhibition director John Smith-Bodden. “W10 is a natural focal point for our wood manufacturing visitors to satisfy deferred purchases.” W8 was applauded for the quality of its 10,000 visitors from across the wood manufacturing sector and W10 expects to grow that position. For this reason, and to maintain its identity across the whole wood manufacturing sector, W10 has decided not to co-locate with Interbuild as in 2008. Bookings from WMSA exhibitors will be invited in the autumn of 2009 with sales opening to non-members at the beginning of 2010. For more information: Tel: 01629 530 998

New Technical Executive and Member Advantages at WMSA The Woodworking Machinery Suppliers Association has appointed Geoff Isenman to take over the role of Technical Executive from Tony Kaye who retired on 30 April. Tony joined the association in 1992 and is well known for his extensive knowledge of machinery matters. WMSA will be honouring his long valued service at this years AGM. WMSA members can also look forward to an increased membership support package to help in these more difficult trading conditions. The coming weeks will see the launch of widened business help lines, a new credit management scheme and access to market and financial intelligence.

Steve Bulmer Becomes Managing Director of Biesse UK & Alberto Maestri is Appointed Subsidiaries’ Sales Manager Following his four years experience in Biesse UK as Managing Director, Alberto Maestri is leaving the subsidiary to begin the challenge of leading and coordinating the subsidiaries sales organisation through the application of the Kaizen principles. He takes up his new position in Italy of Subsidiaries’ Sales Manager, starting from the 1st of June 2009. Steve Bulmer, currently Commercial Director, will take over as Managing Director of Biesse Group UK and, having worked very closely with Alberto for the last few years, will ensure continuity in all aspects of the business. “I am personally very sorry to see Alberto leave us”, says Steve, “It has been a huge learning curve for me over the last few years. We have always had a common vision on the direction of the company, but Alberto brought so much in terms of organisation, procedures and team building. He has done a tremendous job in the short time he has been on board under very difficult circumstances. Our only consolation is that he will still be working very closely with us over the coming years. I am privileged to be taking over from him, but at the same time, I have a hint of trepidation, as he has left big shoes to step into”. Alberto adds: “Steve and the Management Team at Biesse Group UK are very clear on their objectives. The worldwide goal of the Biesse organisation is to be considered by our customers, employees and contemporaries as the reference business partner through delivering innovative solutions and support. By constantly monitoring our performance in all departments and by maintaining an attitude of continuous improvement within the organisation, we will keep raising the bar. With Steve and his Team, Biesse and Intermac UK are in good hands.”

Recession? – What recession! Were the words on many of the exhibitor’s lips at the recent Woodworking Scotland exhibition in Edinburgh. A spokesman for Nelton Exhibitions, the organisers of the event, stated that the vast majority of exhibitors at the event were extremely pleased with the level of interest they enjoyed at the show. Whilst visitor numbers were slightly down, the overall quality of visitors was excellent. Many sales were made and a very high number of good enquiries were received. The fact that so many exhibitors commented that their return from the show was so much higher than at last years W8 exhibition was especially pleasing. productivity and automation and which guarantees flexibility due to the use of EVA and PU adhesives. Bre.Ma presented a further innovation in the Vektor range capable of carrying out boring, routing and milling. All Bre.Ma machining centres including the Vektor permits consecutive processing of different panels without the need for manual set-up, allowing the operator to manage loading and unloading without the machine interrupting the production process. Finally, Biesse Group presented significant innovations in the engineering field through the BIESSESYSTEMS brand – the connection between the clients product and the most efficient way of producing it. The BIESSE CIMTRACK, the 3D process simulator which is used in the analysis of production processes, enables the systems to change the size of the batch, the number of format changes the size of workable panels and the optimisation of processing in real time. Many of the party have purchased Biesse machinery in the past and were adamant that they would be buying again now and in the future, for the simple reason that the purchase of reliable machinery together with a reliable after sales and support service is important especially in the current economic climate. technodomus exhib review to a wide variety of requirements. A strong machine base and reliable components ensure a long, productive life cycle for the GALAXY 3. The machine is based around the modular FLEXCUT system consisting of mobile units with grippers which can be excluded individually thus making it possible to handle highly complex cutting patterns in very short cycle times. Gabbiani has also redesigned the major components at the heart of this panel saw. The saw carriage, for example, now ensures even greater cutting precision. Carriage movements are even faster thanks to the drive units and the smooth-running recirculating ball screws. The machine bed has a single upright fitted with THK slideways for the blade carriage. This feature is a characteristic of all Gabbiani machines and has been redesigned to support intensive, heavy duty use even on three work shifts. The pusher and pressure units have also been redesigned to ensure smooth movements, precision positioning and optimised sawdust extraction. The PC–PLC control system and control interface have been designed to make life easier for the operator. No special expertise is required. The WINCUT interface is very user-friendly. The interactive diagnostic pages make troubleshooting simple and ensure a rapid return to service. The new version of the OTTIMO optimisation program has a new graphic interface, a new algorithm and new parameters with bitmap association. All features designed to make the system quick and easy to use.

Anderson Stratos Pro All Systems Go For Nesting he advanced nesting capabilities of Anderson Stratos Pro give distributor RW’s machine broad appeal at all shop floor levels. Stratos Pro takes the software and controllability advantages of the Anderson brand, perhaps the world’s leading maker of CNC workcentres, to shop floors both large and small. According to users, Anderson’s advanced software for panels nesting applications gives their Stratos Pro the ability to make a kitchen layout in three to four hours that would have taken five working man days on an old sliding table saw layout. Such an exponential increase in output capability is now providing many more opportunities for designers and fitters to explore new market niches at all levels, whether going direct to the end customer or servicing the needs of independent trade studios on the high street and on through to builders and developers. The helical rack and pinion drive of the Stratos Pro system introduces high level flexibility - work tables can even be extended in the x-axis. This is a very important feature for machining kitchen end panels or the full height panel components of bespoke bedroom or home office layouts. A set of pop-up location pins in the work table of Stratos pro

and its grooved HPL phenolic table combine to promote high levels of accuracy in positioning and clamping, both for single panels or for nested component sets. Sixteen vertical plus two-way horizontal spindles for drilling and an automatic 10 position tool changer generates huge flexibility and a high speed software bus can be incorporated to speed and simplify cad-cam programming. Manufacturing nested panel components on the Anderson Stratos Pro, users have discovered a simple answer to questions of maintaining and indeed improving the higher quality standards that today’s marketplace seeks. In addition to providing many smaller makers with opportunities to develop new market niches independently, users have also found RW Machines to be very flexible and reliable in support of this extremely adaptable technology. ith an impressive manufacturing facility in Cramlington, near Newcastle, Browns 2000 is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of kitchen, bedroom and bathroom doors and other associated products. With a line-up of 14 - SCM ERGON CNC Machining Centres already installed, more than any other manufacturer in the World, Owner Peter Brown visited the W8 Exhibition at the NEC last November, to discuss with a limited number of potential suppliers, the purchase of 3 more twin-table CNC’s, capable of the high production of nesting doors from a full-size sheet of MDF. Peter Brown comments “I spent two whole days at W8 in detailed discussions with manufacturers of CNC Machining Centres, who were capable of providing me with the very latest nesting technology that was available, as this process was now critical to our increasing production levels of our high quality doors.” “In the end, after careful consideration, I selected, once again, the SCM Group’s CNC machines, placing an Order for 3 – ERGON NT machines fitted with several new features that really impressed me. In discussions with SCM’s Area Sales Manager, Ian McCarthy, he also agreed to sell 2 older CNC’s to make floor space for the new Ergons.” Browns 2000 Production Manager, Richard Jenkins, continues “The first Ergons supplied to us had tables with bars and pods so that door blanks, all cut from an MDF sheet, could be individually machined. Peter Brown then ordered and installed a flat-table machine, fitted with SCM’s high volume vacuum system, so that the Nesting solution could be investigated. All successive machines installed were to this same specification and now about 95 per cent of our total production is nested, with the bar and pod machines used for specials and reworking.” The new Ergon NT machines will have two work tables with dimensions of 2120 x 3120mm each, with a gap between them for easy loading and unloading. High capacity table vacuum of 1000 cubic metres per hour ensures full sheet hold down. Two powerful electro spindles, each 13KW running at 24000 rpm and fitted with 12 plus 24 position automatic tool changers provide the high quality finish demanded. The routing heads can either run together or with the Independent X-axis controls, the heads can therefore operate independently, one per table, effectively providing two separate machines within the one machine. SCM’s new system for the cleaning of any excess dust from the work tables will be included ensuring the expulsion of any dust after a machining cycle before loading another full-size MDF sheet. Syncron Copying Devices will be fitted to each routing head to allow for any inaccuracies in the thickness of the MDF. Browns 2000 have developed their own incoming order system that can transfer Orders received by fax or internet, process them and then send directly to the CNC machines using AlphaCam and AlphaDoor very quickly so that Brown’s customers receive their orders in the shortest possible time.

Sales Director, Garry Brown, Peter’s son, comments “We are really looking forward to the installation of the three new Ergons, as the Nesting process has completely revolutionised our production processes. We are taking an increasing number of orders since the beginning of 2009 due to the demise of some of our competitors. We are currently introducing some new door styles, such as Melbury and Premier in the latest foils, with High Gloss finish continuing to be very successful.” Concluding, Peter Brown states “We have an excellent working relationship with SCM and my production staff can contact them at any time. Although we can normally resolve any problems that arise ourselves, it’s good to know we can contact SCM’s CNC Help Desk in Nottingham, and they can then dial into our machine using Telesolve to solve the problem. We can’t wait for the new Ergons to arrive and be installed, that will make a total of 17 Ergon machines we have in our factory.” For more information: Browns 2000:Tel 01670 590556 Fax 01670 738206 SCM Group UK:Tel. 01159 770044 www.scmgb.co.uk

Masterwood - support through the recession talian CNC machinery manufacturer Masterwood Spa has confirmed its commitment to the UK woodworking industry by further developing its manufacturing strategy and establishing a new sales and service operation (www.masterwoodgb.com). "We have a long tradition of supplying customers in the UK and Ireland and our commitment to helping companies achieve the best possible production will continue even during these challenging economic times", said Gianluca Ticchi, director of Masterwood Spa. "The sales and service team at Masterwood GB, led by John Cookson, Dave Kennard and Chris Alexander, has long experience and expertise in our machines. With full support from Italy, the new company will be working to build upon our success by maintaining and enhancing the top class support to customers, while also providing expert advice to new customers and new markets on the optimum machinery for their applications and business needs. "In fact, within the next few months we will be organising a visit by a group of UK companies to our factory in Rimini, so that we can demonstrate technology to help them improve their competitiveness through increased productivity and quality and reduced manufacturing costs". Masterwood will launch major new additions to its range of machinery at Ligna in May, including two five-axis CNC machining centres - the Project 4000 for rapid switching between door, window, stair and cabinet production and the Project 5000 dedicated joinery centre, which

I

can be specified with a 5-axis and 3-axis head working together. "These machines are both born from our refined strategy to specialise in 'bridge type' construction, in order to provide joinery customers with the most robust solution for machining solid wood", said Mr Ticchi. "For the panel processing market, advanced technology will also be shown at Ligna with the debut of the MW2142, designed for optimum large sheet nesting applications. For smaller volume customers we will also show the new Project 310, which brings the increased performance and versatility of large diameter tooling to an 'entry-level' machine with a low cost to the client". Masterwood says it will also soon be announcing new developments in software for its range of machines - including a unique application of parametric programming. n the edge of the beautiful Cotswolds, near the village of Minster Lovell in Witney, Oxfordshire, Minster Joinery Craftsman Limited is flourishing, especially after the recent installation of an SCM 5-axis Prisma CNC Machining Centre. Minster Joinery, established in 1984, is essentially a family business with 10 employees, with Managing Director, Steven Mullins, 28, steering the company ahead with his brother Daniel, 26. The company takes its name from their village, but upon examining the quality of the work they produce, it would look equally at home in a real Minster or Cathedral, with the local Blenheim Palace and Oxford Colleges providing a great source of work for Minster Joinery. With only the usual classical woodworking machines in the factory, Steven and Daniel Mullins discussed expansion of the company, to reduce delivery times and further increase the quality of their very wide range of bespoke joinery. Steven Mullins commented “Minster Joinery has always manufactured and supplied quality bespoke joinery, whether it is windows, doors, staircases, gates, porches, conservatories or the Above: A complete porch machined on the SCM many other requests we receive, mainly by referral machining centre or recommendation from satisfied customers. SCM UK’s Area Sales Manager, Roger Gabb, visited us and we arrived at a final specification for a 5-axis machine with a 6.3 metre long bed, even though this meant we had to extend our factory to accommodate the machine, but it has proven to be very worthwhile.” Programming of the SCM 5-axis machine is carried out by self taught Daniel Mullins using AlphaCam’s 5-axis Advanced CAD CAM package, with the bolt-on of Alpha Stair, as staircases and stair component manufacturing is on the increase, with an order for 22 staircases just received and more to arrive. The SCM machine is a model Record Actionline 110AL Prisma with TVN table and a variety of vacuum pods and modules. A 16-Station Automatic Tool Changer stores the tooling and feeds the heavy duty 5-axis routing head that is capable of machining all types of hard and soft timbers, some being of very heavy duty sections. Continuing, Steven Mullins commented “We have been very impressed with both the Sales and After Sales staff at SCM UK. Everyone is very helpful and that was good to know in the early days after installation of the CNC. We already knew they had a good reputation and our experience has confirmed that fact, and in return we never mind Roger Gabb bringing potential customers to see our machine and showing them the many benefits of purchasing an SCM

5-axis Machining Centre.” Due to the flexibility of the CNC, Minster Joinery are now capable of taking on work previously turned away, and rather than taking several days to prepare and traditionally machine a particular job, it now only takes a few hours, so lead times have reduced dramatically. Last words from Steven Mullins “The SCM has proven to be a great investment for Minster Joinery and we are very busy at the moment as our customers are those who demand excellent quality and they know we can deliver in a reasonable time. A second CNC machine will be considered soon.”

The new range of pumps also employs the more sophisticated Air Mix technology rather than air spray, which provides greater transfer efficiency with less waste and an outstanding finish. It is also available in an airless spray version. Graco’s MERKUR pump is suitable for single component application whether the material be water based or solvent based. Utilising low pulsation with high output fluid delivery, the air-assisted, airless spray technology employed assures excellent finish quality with high material transfer efficiency and fast production rates. With minimal service downtime and greater efficiency, quick payback and early profitability are benefits too good to ignore in today’s economic climate. Hi-Tec Spray Ltd supply more than application equipment and plant in isolation. They also develop a partnership with their clients to design and develop turnkey systems, where, on the one hand – individual components work well independently, and on the other – collectively fit together like a glove. They are one of few companies able to pull both sides of the industry together to deliver that total, professional solution.

The new edgebanding machine series the Homag Ambition 2264 PowerEdge gluing unit permits complete processing of furniture components in any conceivable form, including trimming, sawing, drilling and edge-banding. The integrated Homag TBP feeding system and the new AP automatic positioning table will highlight the BAZ 722 as a fully automated production cell. The current debate surrounding the most efficient use of resources is set to lend new impetus to the issue of lightweight construction. Homag has four versatile edging solutions on offer in this sector including the newly developed FlexEdge, which affords secure adhesion, a high degree of dimensional stability and minimal processing times, even when working with small radii. The Homag Group offers a full range of technology for constructing, decoratively facing, cutting, edging and packaging lightweight panel products. Homag will be unveiling a major advancement in edging technology with a patented LaserEdge system for the first time at Ligna. Instead of using glue, it fuses the edge and panel using laser-heated edging material, which renders any join practically invisible! Working in conjunction with edging manufacturers and laser specialists, a machine has been developed, which produces higher processing quality while significantly reducing costs compared to processing methods using PU hot-melt adhesives. Yet another innovation from Homag will be edge-banding machine KAL 300 with FlexTrim. This new machine uses automated tool changing within the machine to achieve fast resetting to different edge profiles and thus significantly increases the productivity of furniture manufacturing. The tried and tested KAL 300 series will also be upgraded with an extended range of functions. A 19 inch touch screen is now an integral feature of the machine, as is the facility for processing workpieces up to a thickness of 100mm through every processing stage on the machine from jointing to finish processing.

llwood Machinery, the sole importer of the Interwood range of machines has just completed one of their biggest installations at Shore laminates of Perth consisting of a fully automatic Pressing and Machining line. The original brief for this line was for the process of laminating up to 750 panels per day, producing panels from 11mm to 60mm thick with a panel size from 900mm x 2200mm up to a maximum of 3050mm x 1220mm. the substrata to be of plywood, MDF or chipboard. The Pressing line is heavy duty due to the need to load panel stacks that could weigh up to 1.5 tons. This stack is driven into the loading table and using a four post lift for accuracy lifts the panels up to the correct height to allow only one panel to be driven forward. Before this happens, the top panel is automatically aligned against a fence. The top panel is driven forward into an Interwood GSB top and bottom brushing machine then in turn though an Interwood GSD/HD glue spreader. An operator loads a laminate skin onto the index table and the glued panel is carried above this panel and lowered into position. This process continues until the required stack height is achieved. The stack is then automatically driven onto a cross conveyer that moves to whichever of the three presses are free, loads the stack automatically and places the panel under pressure. The three Interwood FHU Down Stroke presses with a capacity of 3100mm x 1300mm with a maximum opening of 800mm were fitted with power driven conveyers with a special high impact belting used in airports. These conveyers were fitted with sensors to determine the panel length that guarantees the load would stop in the correct position. There are eight 80mm hydraulic rams fitted to each press with a special control, to enable the automatic exclusion of the last set of rams when doing shorter panels. Bearing in mind the amount of panels that were being produced, Shore needed to update their machining capacity. Allwood designed a layout and process that was approved by the customer and the following line was supplied. The Press panel loads were placed on a cross conveyer that in turn loaded panels into each side of a Interwood Double Bridge loader, capable of lifting the complete range of panels onto a driven angled conveyer against a fence, offering the panels into a Interwood Double Ended Tenoner. Fitted with threes heads per side scoring, hogging and vertical milling this machine was also fitted with a centre saw that allows the customer to split panels in half for their click joint shower panels. After the panels have left the DET they travel onto a right-angled conveyer that will send the panels sideways through an indexing unit into a second DET. This was fitted with a long in-feed so the panels could be squared off with the drive dogs behind them to guarantee panel squareness. This machine again was fitted with

The conveyor line – fitted with sensors to determine the panel length will stop in the correct position three heads per side. A DVD is available of both these lines working. Allwood Machinery offers a turnkey service for any customer’s requirements. For more information: Tel: 01621 859477 www.interwood.co.uk

Unitech Invests in the Future New premises and new Giben Prisma 3000 saw for Banbury-based bespoke kitchen specialist

evin Crouch’s business colleagues (even his best friends!) advised him against a move to new premises amid news of deepening economic gloom. They also drew breath through clenched teeth, he says, when he told them he was investing in a new Giben Prisma 3000 SP panel saw from RW Machines in the opening weeks of 2009. In both instances, though, he is proving thier wrong-thinking about both himself and his business. Kevin is MD at Unitech Oxon Ltd., a kitchen design and manufacturing company which he has owned with his wife Valerie since 1994. Unitech is a prime example of sound corporate building on solid foundations that has given Kevin and Valerie the confidence they need to drive their strategy forward, even in the teeth of the worst recession for decades. “We’ve managed our growth very carefully down the years,” says Kevin. “In fact, we started out as designers and suppliers under the name Creative Interiors and we didn’t actually move into

Unitech’s Giben Prisma 3000 is fed from the front and new software technology makes it easier to program. manufacturing until 2001, when we had positively identified that the demand was unquestionably there.” When Unitech was originally established as a manufacturing entity, it was in a factory north of Banbury in Oxfordshire where Kevin turned to local wood-based panel specialists RW for the machining technology he needed. “Making the commitment to manufacturing was a significant step for us,” says Valerie Crouch. “We needed a supplier we could rely on for machinery to a standard necessary for the quality of output we are targeting at Unitech and also for the reliability and service to back it up – down-time on the shop floor is something we are determined to rule out of our production scheduling. David Thompson-Rowland and his team at RW Machines gave us the confidence we needed and he has always provided us with top notch service and support for our business as it has grown.” The move to new premises came in September 2008 and brought a number of new efficiencies to the business. For the first time, the whole operation moved under one roof with no more need to move materials around between smaller individual units. Also, the new location is better placed logistically, being situated just off junction 11 of the M40 at Banbury.

“We previously had about 7,000 square feet inside two buildings,” says Kevin, and now we have 11,000 square feet, all under one roof. As well as streamlining the production process, we’ve been able to open a trade showroom that really demonstrates the diversity of our range - we offer over 400 door designs and we now have the manufacturing versatility and software technology we need to offer a truly bespoke service.” At the same time, the Giben Prisma 3000 SP has brought a much greater production volume capability to the business. It replaces an older model which was also supplied by RW Machines and which had reached the end of its working life. “The new Giben has slotted seamlessly into our production line,” says Kevin, “and it is giving us greater precision working. It’s easier to program and it loads at the front so that the operator can run the panel sizing operation single handedly.” Prisma 3000 SP is from the world’s leader in beam saw technology and features the heavy duty construction that the market has learned to expect from Giben. The Unitech machine specifically is a single line panel sizing centre that was developed by Giben for the wood-based panel processing sector and particularly for use by small to medium sized cabinet furniture makers. Front loading of the stacks is facilitated by a panel pusher with grippers featuring double bottom floating appendices which block the stack during the whole cutting cycle and until the last trim cut is made. Support tables under the pusher bar are equipped with roller modules to protect the board surface from any damage; saw blade projection is to a maximum height of 132mm and the split pressure beam ensures maximum stack control. Unitech produces around 250 cabinets a week of which most are sold ready assembled and with doors in position for trade customers. Kevin Crouch estimates that the Giben will enable a doubling of this throughput due in large part to the significant improvement in materials handling that it represents. This has eliminated the need for manual removal and turning of workpieces between passes, allowing panels to be loaded, cut, turned and finished, all in one sequence.

Unitech’s focus on smaller trade customers has proved invaluable during the economic downturn. Says Valerie Crouch: “We are not dependent on one or two big customers for the majority of our business. A good mix of smaller specialist buyers makes us less vulnerable to big swings in the trading climate. “Our customers are not dependent on large-scale building projects and have been less affected than bigger operators by the slow-down in the building sector. We are confident, but not complacent, that we will have enough demand to see us through the worst of the recesion. “A new factory and new machinery like the Giben Prisma 3000 SP will make us more efficient, avoid down-time and it will also help us to make the most of the opportunities that will arise when the economy starts to recover and grow again. We feel we are about as well placed as we could reasonably hope to be in the circumstances.”

Dantherm in tune with Symphony ymphony Group, who manufacture high quality fitted kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture has expanded into new production facilities in South Yorkshire. Comprehensively equipped with Homag sawing, straight line and profile edgebanding machinery, a high quality dust extraction and waste management system was required to fuel a new 4.2MW Mawera boiler plant for factory heating. Symphony called Dantherm Filtration after being impressed with many recent installations and Dantherm's Paul Costello and Neil Parkes worked in close harmony with Symphony selecting Danfoss inverter driven fans to maintain constant airflow for all conditions. Remote colour touch screen controls in the production hall provide clear functional, status and monitoring. Woodstock Furniture Gets Hot Result with Reduced Waste and Free Heating Bespoke furniture manufacture Woodstock Furniture has slashed waste costs and heating bills at its Andover workshop since the installation of a combined dust extraction and heating solution by Wood Waste Control (Engineering) Ltd. Woodstock designs, manufactures and installs bespoke top-ofthe range kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture with installations ranging from private homes to luxury yacht interiors all over the UK and as far afield as Barbados. The company moved recently from Winchester to 12,000 sq ft premises in Andover which incorporate a showroom highlighting the company’s products and capabilities. Woodstock works mostly in hardwoods including maple, cherry, oak and walnut and brought its existing dust and waste extraction filter with it when the company moved to Andover. However, according to production manager Richard Mawson, Woodstock was keen to enhance the performance and abilities of its extraction set up with a view to reducing the cost of heating the workshop and the costs and environmental issues relating to the disposal of waste wood. “At the previous workshop dust and shavings were blown in to a lorry trailer which had to be removed and emptied on a regular

basis and off cuts were collected in skips which then went to landfill,” he said. He studied the market before choosing Wood Waste Control (Engineering) Ltd, one of Europe’s leading waste extraction specialists, to provide the new enhanced system. The company is based in Bourne End near High Wycombe and has hundreds of successful installations across the UK, in Europe, Russia and Africa. All Wood Waste Control equipment is built to meet COSHH legislation requirements and can stand alone or be used in conjunction with total-extraction return air heating systems Wood Waste Control designed the system and installed a Reinbold AZR800S chipper and a Reinbold RB60 briquetting press fed by a WRV 100 rotary valve from the existing dust extraction filter. Waste is compressed into briquettes which are stored in paper storage sacks. When required, the bags of briquettes are fed into a WWA500 warm air space heater, which is capable of burning around 40kg of wood waste offcuts every hour, and has an output of 500,000Btu. Richard Mawson said: “Wood Waste Control introduced us to the Carbon Trust who were able to provide an interest-free loan to enable the work to be carried out. Now we have cut the amount of waste going to landfill by two-thirds and gas bills have been slashed because we now use waste and offcuts to heat the workshop. “The system works really well and we have calculated it will pay for itself within three years. It is even possible that we could sell the bags of briquettes to local woodburning stove users so that would be an additional source of income – so much better than paying someone to take the waste away!”

Air Plants makes it comfortable for Komfort HEN Komfort Workspace decided to replace its old wood waste extraction system on the door manufacturing plant in Crawley, West Sussex, the company selected Air Plants Dust Extraction Ltd. Komfort Workspace, part of the Sheffield Insulation Group, is one of Europe’s foremost designers and manu facturers of workplace products, and as such, has an established reputation for the provision of excellent customer service and technical support. At Crawley, the state of the art woodworking machinery is employed in cutting, processing and finishing large quantities of timber based panels which, in turn, generates high levels of wood waste. Nigel Elmes, production engineer at Komfort, invited Air Plants to come up with a system that would cater for the existing machinery, plus provide in-built capacity for future expansion. The main criterion was to keep the existing extraction system running during the

W

installation, whilst keeping disruption of production to an absolute minimum. After careful consideration of Komfort’s requirements, Air Plants came up with a scheme that involved the initial relocation of the existing externally sited filter and fan over a weekend, followed by the installation of an APDEL Cyclo filter and two No. 90 centrifugal fans in its original location, while the old system continued to run. The internal ductwork was installed without dismantling existing ductwork, or disruption of production. Once installed, the changeover from the old system to the new was carried out over a weekend, with production up and running first thing Monday morning. Air Plants then dismantled and removed the redundant system from site, again without disrupting production. The installed system has a total airflow capacity of 85,000 m3/hr, which is almost three times the capacity of the original system’s 29,500 m3/hr. The two new fans extract a total of 34,000 m3/hr each, with 17,000 m3/hr available capacity in the Cyclo filter, for future machine extraction. The control panel supplied with the system incorporates the starters for a future third fan, so Komfort can keep future expansion costs to a minimum. Featuring Air Plants’ ‘Advanced Filter Technology’, the Cyclo - filter solution is a dust extraction industry leader. Offering control of large volume waste with continual output, the Cyclofilter has ‘Auto Pulse Jet Cleaning’ on demand and provides maximum operational efficiency with 95% separation prior to filtration. The Cyclofilter’s small footprint design allows flexible site positioning for both existing and new build applications and offers the solution for the control of all dust types, both natural and man made. Nick Hare, Komfort’s production director, has this to say: “The new system has had a major impact upon the manufacturing plant, both in terms of improved quality of finish on our CNC machines and also the overall appearance of the factory. No longer do we have to contend with excess shavings and dust on the factory floor, as it is dealt with efficiently and effectively at source. “Air Plants has provided a professional and practical service during the installation and Lance Morley was particularly committed to helping us through what could have been a major upheaval. The project was fairly painless and we never felt disrupted in achieving production targets while the plant was being assembled.”

leading vinyl door manufacturer has slashed energy bills for running its dust plant by investing in the latest ‘green technology’ dust extraction from Dust Control Systems Ltd. Based in Middleton, Manchester, Crystal Doors are specialists in vinyl-wrapped doors and accessories, supplying to companies who offer bespoke manufactured solutions for any room in the home. In addition to continuous improvement of its manufacturing processes, the company has an ongoing commitment to responsible environmental practice. Recently this commitment, together with a drive to reduce energy costs, led Crystal Doors to invest in a new energy-efficient dust plant and a woodwaste-burning heating system. Extraction power varies as Compact DCS Pulse-Jet Filter The doors are manufactured in MDF using auto-dampers open and close installation at Crystal Doors wood sourced from sustainable forests; boards are cut to size, machined to produce any design, and then fans which operate ‘on-demand’ from each of 14 machines. Operation finished with high quality printed vinyl. The new dust extraction system is entirely automatic, with the extraction system’s power varying installed by DCS comprises an externally sited Reverse Jet Filter, instantly as dampers open and close. This means that the dust plant designed to operate under negative pressure and handle air volumes always runs at optimum efficiency and keeps power usage to an of 20,000 m3/hr. The compact, high-efficiency filter deals with MDF absolute minimum.” dust from ten high-performance woodworking machines, three beam Dust Control Systems replaced three existing dust extractors and saws and a hogger that granulates offcuts. Waste is discharged, installed the new plant, complete with clip-together ducting runs and pressure-free, from the filter via a rotary valve to a soft flight conveyor automatic damper systems, without interruption to Crystal Doors’ which in turn feeds direct to a fuel storage silo. day-to-day production. Managing Director, Richard Hagan Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at DCS, says: “The most significant commented: “We are delighted with the new extraction system; our advantage of the new extraction system is its ability to provide precise old equipment employed fixed speed fans, running constantly at over extraction volumes only when they’re needed. This is achieved by 100kW for 10 hours a day, wasting vast amounts of valuable energy. utilising variable speed control and multiple high-efficiency clean air In contrast, the new extractor uses only 24kW to 40kW, operates fully automatically, and gives us optimum extraction volume, just when we need it.” Crystal Doors has certainly put its woodwaste to positive use – 95% is now recycled. The 20,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility is fully heated in winter, without the need for other heat sources, whilst waste disposal and energy costs have been dramatically reduced. This new ‘green technology’ extraction, with the added benefit of a genuine payback on investment, adds up to both environmental and commercial sense.

Savings Materialise with Egger Eurolight ight deadlines, demanding clients and stiff competition have always characterised the furniture fabrication sector, but the onset of the recession means it really is survival of the fittest. When it comes to making a business leaner, managers often look at areas where immediate savings can be made. But one area often overlooked is material selection, which offers excellent opportunities for savings. EGGER UK, Europe’s leading manufacturer of wood-based panel products has developed Eurolight, which is designed to offer the best of both worlds; lightweight, easy to work boards combined with excellent stability and a fashionable, hard-wearing finish. 50mm Eurolight panels are approximately 41% lighter than 38mm panels of equivalent area dimensions because of the rigid honeycombe structure sandwiched between two layers of melamine faced chipboard (MFC). Paul Watson, MD of specialist shop-fitting manufacturer and panel processing firm, SW Watson in Preston, Lancashire, is well placed to talk about Eurolights advantages. In January 2009, a major nationwide retailer commissioned his company to construct 24 wardrobe and 134 luggage table display units that had to be designed, built and distributed to stores around the country. The project’s turnaround time was four weeks and the units are expected to last three years. Paul’s project required 214 of Platinum White 50mm Eurolight. “I would say that using Eurolight meant we probably halved the time it took us to complete the project because of their lightness and the fact that we didn’t have to bond the boards up to achieve the required thickness. The project was also challenging from a delivery point of view because of the tight deadlines and

T

complicated logistics,” said Paul, “and as with most projects at the moment, protecting margins is more important that ever. “In order to meet the client’s needs, which was a hard wearing, contemporary looking shelving display, we came up with a design built of EGGER Eurolight. We chose Eurolight because of its versatility, light weight, durability and because the client liked the chunky, modern finish. “Lighter panels have direct money saving advantages,” said Paul. “Fewer hands are required to work the material and production turnaround times are reduced because the boards can be ordered pre-finished. And at the end of the day lighter materials save fuel getting the unit to the shop as well.” Paul added: “Eurolight has great stability for a surprisingly light product, which makes it ideal for furniture and worktop uses. Many of the displays are in heavy consumer traffic areas and in spaces where they could be frequently bumped by trolleys and cleaning equipment. Most have been n the shop floors since January and they’re probably going to be in a position for three years. As you’d imagine, durability was a key client specification. “We’ve also been working on ways to reduce the carbon footprint of our operation,” said Paul, “so using Eurolight also helps us achieve that aim because we’re using less wood to create the same displays.” Katie Burton, EGGER UK’s Marketing Coordinator said: “Paul’s large scale project demonstrates the versatility and advantages of Eurolight very clearly, and it’s great to hear that his client thought the project was a success. “The economic client is forcing interior designers and fabricators to assess their operational efficiency and many have found that a careful choice of material can produce savings throughout the production process. Eurolight’s décor, versatility and robustness means there are now more opportunities to use a material that is better value for money and doesn’t sacrifice the final look,” concluded Katie. Eurolight has recently been paired with Egger’s 2008-2010 selection of decorative laminate finishes. The range offers appealing shades and textures and features contemporary trends like quartzite alongside traditional evergreen finishes such as beech. All finishes are available in 38mm and 50mm Eurolight thicknesses and surface dimensions can be customised according to distributors’ requirements.
