43 Thousand People At Xylexpo 2012: The Biennial Exhibition “Holds On Strong” Figures were actually up to expectations: 43,295 visitors, 15.9 percent less than in 2010. These figures indicate a substantial endurance of the biennial international exhibition of wood and furniture technology and supplies, in face of an economic situation that is still very complicated, also for the 515 exhibitors, including 177 foreign companies from 34 countries, who attended the Milan show. The reduction of visitor figures was absolutely “inherent” to the critical economic situation and it was largely compensated by the excellent quality of visitors. According to exhibitors, such quality was instrumental to starting promising deals and establishing a good number of new contacts, that will ultimately translate into sales opportunities.

Biesse: Future technology today Biesse previews two NEW machines coming later this year! When people in the woodworking industry the world over think about machinery, innovation and advanced technology there is always one company that stands out, that company is the Biesse Group. With nearly 50 years in the industry, the Biesse group is made up of brands that everyone knows Bre.Ma, Selco, RBO, VIET and Biesse Rover, thought to be the most well-known and best selling wood CNC machine in the world. The Biesse Group has thousands of customers all over the world from Brazil to Britain. Biesse’s continued dedication to innovation and R&D means the company is bringing new technology to the market each year, currently the company holds over 200 patents for technology giving customers technology that no one else can offer. Biesse launched several new products at the recent Technodomus show in Italy, which were well received by the industry. Soon Biesse will be launching two new machines come the autumn and we can exclusively preview them to the UK market below. Biesse will be launching a new pod and rail CNC machine called the Rover BG, this machine is targeted at the mid-range level to be positioned between the existing Rover A and
Rover C range and will take advantage of a new generation of software developed by Biesse. The Rover BG will be a truly multi-purpose CNC, suitable for not only panel processing but the processing of doors, windows and stairs, thanks to its optional convertible bed that will be able to take the Rover BG from a pod and rail CNC to a flat bed. The new rover BG will have a mobile gantry structure offering excellent levels of stability, the bed will be able to be configured into a multi-zone for easy loading and unloading while the machine continues to work. Biesse’s second new machine this Autumn will be the UNILINE, part of Biesse’s continued dedication to its solid wood range of machines. The UniLine is ideally suited to the production of standard and special windows, and because of its design it is extremely safe for operators, in fact the machine can be left to run itself for up to an hour, before an operator will need to go back to the machine. This is thanks to the UniLine’s automatic loading, unloading and positioning of pieces, up to 16 pieces can be accommodated on the loading and unloading table before an operator needs to

reload the machine and unload the finished pieces. Because Biesse understands that tooling is such an important part of any solid wood machine the UniLine comes with a 22position onboard chain magazine or an optional additional 44-position flexistore magazine.
Both of these machines will soon be available from Biesse Group UK and will come with the Biesse’s 5 year Total Care package, which offers Biesse’s manufacturers warranty for 5 years or 10,00 hours and full servicing for the same period of time which comes with all new Biesse machinery as standard.

MADE IN ITALY Busellato Develop More Simple, Intuitive Controls On Entry-Level CNC Work-Centres A new CNC work centre from Busellato called Easy Jet is aimed at entry level users; the tooling bank is positioned on the right side of the work table for easier access. This is a machine designed for operational simplicity and carries a pre-set tool that allows automatic optimisation of cut depth on vertical spindles, which is of major significance for part nesting operations. Easy Jet shares the depth cut optimsation tooling with a new boring automat from Busellato called Thesix which also carries the same simple, intuitive touch screen controls that eliminate depth boring errors. A portable console with a seven inch colour touch screen simplifies start up operations and also, says Busellato, simplifies use of the machines overall. The compact nature of the touch screen console also increases visibility of the working area overall. CNC workcentres by Busellato have iconic status in the UK wood and panel sector for the manufacture of architectural and furniture components; the Italian specialist has been active in CNC research and development since the 1970s. The range has been largely redesigned in the recent past to better address the needs of the current generation of smaller independent panel and

joinery shops - many options have been reengineered, according to Ian Brown at IWM, UK distributor International Wood Machines Ltd. Busellato’s Jet Star 5 is another entry-level CNC offering very simple configuration of a highly flexible 2486 x 1256 mm component nesting table plus new automatic tool presetting for full optimisation of cutting depths. Technical pre-launch research for the Jet Star 5 led to the development of some important new features for improved working of timber and panels on what is now the latest generation of CNC workcentre systems, all of which can now be now equipped with full automatic panel
handling at both infeed and outfeed stages. Jet Optima by Busellato has traditionally been the big-selling model in the UK and now features a re-designed machine frame to further reduce overall dimensions in today’s smaller factories and craftsman workshops. Control cabinets of the new models are integrated within the frames of the machine to reduce footprint. And new QinX operating software introduces full 5xaxis working on entry-level machines; the very versatile Jet Optima has effectively been reborn for the production of doors, windows and furniture components on today’s smaller and more agile joinery shop-floors. The latest Jet Optima C21 can now be equipped with new 5 x position fixed tool changers on one side of the machine in addition to the 10 x position auto changer on the beam, plus additional double tool changer positions for bigger and heavier work-pieces. Increased tool storage makes the Jet Optima C21 quicker and easier to reset and to switch more quickly from door panels to window frames in today’s busy batch working environment. The JET Concept is the result of Busellato’s thirty plus years of experience manufacturing CNC workcentres on which both heads and work beds can be configured precisely according to specific customer needs and to give maximum

MADE IN ITALY Giben Edging Into UK Marketplace With RW Machines Italian saw makers Giben are expanding their wood-based panel working scope in Bologna with a strategic alliance alongside edgebander specialist Elwood. Newly formed brand Giben Edge will bring new and exclusive, high performance edge finishing technology to the UK marketplace through distributor RW Machines of Bicester with the new KS and KG series of machines. Says RW’s David Thompson Rowland: “these new edgebanders are solidly built, very fast and highly adaptable; their key strengths for the UK marketplace will be speed and dependability. Giben have built their new K series to ‘industrial’ standards: these are automatic edgebanders designed for high speed application of the widest range of finishing materials in both in roll and strip forms.” Robotics technology plays a significant role, raising standards on edge finishing: four corners can be processed simultaneously and robotic scrapers engage individually or in parallel, depending on the corner radii specified.
Easy to use touch screen displays will benefit Giben Edge users.
The undersides of these single sided machines also show advanced thinking on the deployment of additional finishing
options - easily-cleaned open spaces with all operating options housed in a cabinet at the end of the machine for easy access. Each

station can be selected and programmed individually or in groups and all settings are easily stored using a graphics display tablet that is simple, clear and concise. Giben Edge’s new edge finishing systems are impressive; they are fast moving and infinitely precise, bringing operating speeds up to 25 metres per minute and reducing gaps between workpieces to a minimal 500mm. A wide range of edge finishing materials can also be deployed; automatic multi-roll feed systems carry PVC edgings of 0.4mm up to 4mm in thickness and strip fed solid wood lippings up to 15mm for panels up to 70mm in thickness and strip widths down to 140mm. Agile robotics help to ensure precise, finely finished results. The day’s work can be electronically planned quickly and easily using batch processing down to single workpieces, all on a simple electronic touch screen panel. It adds up to high speed adaptability and operational precision on machines engineered and built to very high standards for trouble-free working, whether in-line or strategically sited. A broad range of edge finishing options
covers all current panel finishing needs from pre-milling through end and flush trimming combinations, automatic profiling and glue scraping right up to sand and buff fine finishing. Less widely used finishing options are also available including edge moulding, hot air application blowers and individual multifunction edge finishing stations. In addition to new edge finishing techniques from Giben comes Cojet printing of panel faces and edges using inkjet technology as an alternative to paper, wood veneer and vinyl sheet. Inkjet brings computer generated hi-resolution graphics to finishing, alongside deep, lustrous glosses in a huge range of colours. Application rates have jumped to in excess of 40mtrs2 per hour for 2012 and the versatility of print finishing can be applied to acrylics, plastics, glass, metals, ceramics and foam-based materials as well as to wood and wood-based panels. Alongside finishing automation from Giben Edge, the parent company has also been developing fully automatic feed, processing and return logistics for single operator management of edge finishing

component lines. During the past five years, Giben has won major award recognition for new panel handling and logistics technology at prime exhibition events and venues including Ligna and Atlanta, as well, of course, as Italy’s own Xylexpo. Giben’s aim, says David Thompson Rowlands, is to extend the capability reach of the Bologna organisation from its current position of panel sizing preeminence through the broader surface working and edge finishing fields. Giben Special Projects Division is also extending manufacturing reach from Europe, via their Brazilian subsidiary, across the rest of the world - and to China in particular, where more than a dozen turn-key factory projects have been completed, all of them at costs running into the multi-billions of Euros.

Patented by MAKOR, a special application head for GEMINI has been developed to seal edges of chipboard panels using UV fillers, a preliminary operation that paves the way towards revolutionary new frontiers in panel processing. For clients producing laminated furniture boards, the sealing of chipboard edges allows the wrapping process to fit smoothly on edges previously cut on beamsaw and machined on CNC routers. With the foils becoming thinner and thinner while improving their appeal and finish, the MAKOR solution is the real groundwork for a perfect wrapping quality. At the same time, the UV sealing of chipboard edges is also addressed to clients that want to produce lacquered panels using melamine laminated boards. So far, these clients had to stick to MDF because of the higher density that made it possible to somehow prepare the edges for coating. Instead, with this new system designed by MAKOR, clients can now seriously evaluate the possibility to replace MDF with chipboard panels, with obvious results in terms of reduced final costs for their product. GEMINI was first developed by MAKOR to coat edges of MDF panels thanks to a sequence of operations in line: pre-sanding – UV coating – UV drying – denibbing. The vacuum coating head is able to apply UV with 100% solid content, therefore allowing a total absence of product waste and zero emissions in the atmosphere. The special applicator, patented by Makor, can apply important quantities of product in the most accurate way, even on very profiled and round edges. This new method to prepare panel edges for lacquering operations has proven highly

revolutionary. In the last few years, most of the major producers of panels for the furniture industry in Italy and Europe have changed their way of thinking in regards to edge treating and installed GEMINI by MAKOR, which has allowed them to reduce stocks and to drastically cut their delivery times. TECNOLEGNO - Edge Sanding Solidity of the machines, reliability of the transport system and high quality of the sanding groups have always been the trademark of TECNOLEGNO, making its undisputed leadership position in the processing and sanding of edges widely acknowledged. In the last few years the company has widened further its range of equipment, once again proving the capability to adapt to market demand. Beyond the installation of several unilateral edge sanding machines, which still represent the core business of
the company, TECNOLEGNO has lately worked on many projects involving polishing of high-gloss edges, double-end machines for sizing and squaring panels, customised CN sanders for window profiles. In relation to edge coating and sealing operations, a few dedicated groups have been studied and developed to complete the wide range of sanding solutions. A clear example of this dedication to finding always new solutions for the edge is the sanding belt mod. NAS which has been developed to sand the corners of panels and therefore remove yet again another manual operation.

WHAT’S NEW William Hughes Uses CNC Technology to Make a Better Spiral Spring William Hughes Ltd, announces that it has extended its range of springs to include spiral springs. Unlike other manufacturers who use soft wire which is then hardened and tempered to give the required characteristics, William Hughes uses CNC technology to process spring hard wire into the required shape. The spring is then stress relieved and finished - resulting in a spring that is faster to produce, has a lower cost, looks better and has better performance characteristics. Spiral springs - or clock springs as they are sometimes inaccurately known - are a type of torsion spring. The use of profiled or square wire, allows high performance parts to be engineered for applications in awkward or confined spaces. Typical applications include the electrical and automotive industries, for example seat folding mechanisms. The difference between a spiral spring and a clock spring is that a spiral spring has a few coils that don’t touch each other generally delivering less than one full rotation whereas a clock spring – which can also be made by
ÂŽ
William Hughes – has many coils, usually fitting into a confined casing. William Hughes is a leading manufacturer of springs, bent wire-forms and assemblies and the introduction of spiral springs takes full advantage of the company’s experience, wire bending skills and state of the art wire forming machinery. CNC technology means that tooling for new springs can be manufactured more quickly and at a lower cost. Even small batch quantities can be quickly and economically produced for prototyping or low production runs. Solving problems for its customers is a key attribute of William Hughes, making full use of the extensive design and engineering facilities available at its Stalbridge, Dorset factory. When a solution is agreed with the customer, William Hughes will manufacture high quality parts using its large capacity production plant, which is one of the most sophisticated in the world. Starbank Panel Products Continues to Grow With HOMAG UK Established in 1976 by the Darbyshire family, Starbank Panel Products specialises in high pressure laminate fabrication, postforming, CNC component manufacture and solid surface fabrication for a variety of industries across the UK. Its products are used in an array of applications including the manufacture of healthcare, office and educational furniture components, washroom cubicles, ducting systems, vanity units, laboratory components, shop fitting, kitchen worktops and fire doors. Starbank fabricates precision panels manufactured from a range of core materials which can be faced with highpressure laminates from any of the main
laminate manufacturers. “Our mission is to become the UK's preferred laminate fabrication supplier,” explains Starbank’s managing director, Phil Darbyshire. He continues, “We want to be regarded as a dynamic, forward thinking and technologically advanced company that remains focused on the goals of continuous improvement and complete customer satisfaction. “To achieve this we believe it is absolutely essential to invest in the latest and best machinery available. Our preferred policy is to replace machines every five to eight years because we want to have the most advanced and efficient machines on the market. “In our opinion, in the woodworking

industry, one company stands head and shoulders above the competition and that company is the HOMAG Group. As a consequence, we’ve invested heavily in equipment from them for almost 20 years now and currently have 18 machines working hard in our factory. “Not only does HOMAG provide reliable, extremely well built, technically advanced machinery, but its machinery is also superbly supported by HOMAG UK in terms of service and back up.” Improved efficiency and quality “Our latest investments include the HOMAG KAL 526 double sided edgebander and the WEEKE BHX 055 CNC processing centre. The KAL 526 was bought to replace an ageing edgebander and this new machine has taken our performance to a higher level. “It uses PUR adhesive rather than traditional hot melt which gives superior bond strength and improved heat resistance, resulting in a better bond quality overall. This allows us to pursue more customers requiring hardwood lippings and laminates rather than just tape edging. “The KAL 526 was specified with turning devices at both the in feed and out feed ends of the machine which has enabled us to halve the number of operators needed to run the machine efficiently, even when manufacturing large panels up to 3200mm. Material is fed to the machine much easier and large panels are turned quickly and effortlessly with just one person at each end. “This has allowed us to redeploy the resultant ‘spare’ staff members more effectively elsewhere. And, with strong sales running some 40% up on last year, that is a real benefit. Now we can make

absolutely certain that all our staff are employed exactly where we need them most. “The WEEKE BHX 055 was bought to address an increasingly important issue within the business. In the manufacturing process we have a mix of high and low volume orders. Whilst, as a percentage of sales, the split is about 50:50, in terms of the number of jobs going through the plant there’s a much higher quantity of low volume orders. “To avoid tying up the high volume machinery with low volume orders we invested in the compact BHX 055 which is far more efficient at handling lower volume work. It really works a treat for us with small batch jobs and has freed up time on the bigger machines for high volume work. Inclusive warranty for peace of mind “Our commitment to continuous improvement means we have a lot of
money tied up in equipment and because of that we want to make sure that machinery is maintained in the best possible condition. As a consequence, all our machines have been covered by a 12 month service contract that guarantees they will be serviced three times a year by qualified HOMAG engineers. “For the new HOMAG KAL 526 and the WEEKE BHX 055, however, we decided to go one step further, opting for a five year all inclusive warranty covering parts and labour. Investing in these contracts means we know exactly how much each machine will cost us to run over the next five years. “We’ll have no unpleasant surprises and the machinery will be maintained in tip top condition. That level of peace of mind is very important to us and allows us to plan for the future with confidence and accuracy. A partnership of trust and commitment “From our point of view the partnership

with HOMAG is a very strong one. In a supplier customer relationship there are always going to be issues; anyone in business who thinks otherwise is just being naïve. The important thing is how those issues are dealt with. “The great thing with HOMAG is they seem to work with you rather than against you and that makes for a truly positive business relationship. From the service and parts, to the sales and training departments everyone at HOMAG UK is always willing to help whether it’s in normal business hours, evenings or the weekends, they’ll do whatever they can to get a situation resolved,” concludes Phil Darbyshire.

WHAT’S NEW
Brio: Top Gear For Bi-Folding And Sliding Doors As the trend for bi-folding and sliding doors continues to grow, fabricators will need durable, quality hardware that offers innovative solutions and in-built longevity, writes David Newton of Brio UK, the leading door hardware manufacturer The current trend to merge interior and exterior spaces by the means of bi-folding and sliding doors and windows is gathering pace so the necessity for fabricators to source hardware they can safely ‘fit and forget’ has never been more important. The use of sliding and bi-folding door solutions offers flexible options, adding pizzazz to both domestic and commercial properties and every fabricator knows that door hardware needs to be aesthetically pleasing, durable and reasonably priced. They also know that architects and specifiers are always going to demand products that tick many boxes but in the main will be looking for a product that looks good while giving years of trouble free use. Therefore it is essential that these heavy and expensive doors are fitted with hardware that is up to the job. Spending a little more on a quality product with a long guarantee and life expectancy is the most cost effective option in the long term. Often substandard product contains a lot of plastic components and these can have an adverse effect on the life expectancy of the product, which can lead to expensive remedial work in the medium and long term. Brio, across its comprehensive Weatherfold 4s and Timberoll ranges, can offer exterior folding and sliding door and window furniture that guarantees fabricators the quality, reliability and builtin longevity fabricators are looking for. Brio's recently launched Weatherfold 4s secure exterior folding door and window furniture has been warmly welcomed as a long looked for solution for composite clad
doors. Weatherfold 4s easily handles panels up to 150kg, creating openings up to 4m high and 19.6m wide. Up to eight equal size panels can fold seamlessly in each direction. Brio Weatherfold 4s also has inward or outward opening functionality and is suitable for timber, aluminium and Timber Clad Aluminium doors. There are now four panel weight capacities available: 50kg, 75kg, 100kg and 150kg. Brio Weatherfold 4s is a complete system that includes pivot sets, hanger sets, hinge sets, top track, bottom channel, seals, and locking and flush bolt options. The Brio Weatherfold 4s hardware is made of stainless steel construction that has been passivated for durability and is available in a choice of up to four premium finishes, Satin stainless, Polished Stainless, PVD Brass and PVD Black. And, because security has to be an integral part of any folding or sliding door system, Brio has adopted a total package approach, with locking solutions an integral part of the door and window hardware it produces and which have been developed to offer a high level of durability and security for folding and sliding timber, aluminium and composite door systems across its Weatherfold range. For all-timber sliding doors, Brio Timberoll bottom rolling hardware offers the best solution for exterior doors up to 300kg. All Brio Timberoll hardware offers quiet fingertip control through the combination of track profile, stainless steel bogies, precision bearings and nylon tyred wheels on a choice of aluminium, bronze or brass bottom rails. The full stainless steel construction of the bogie rollers and stainless steel bearings ensures that exterior Timberoll systems excel even in corrosion prone coastal areas. Brio is confident that fabricators will appreciate the breadth of the Brio range and the quality of its construction as it continually moves ahead to design, develop and improving its product. Brio offers

products that are flexible in use and will readily adapt its hardware to work with various materials thereby allowing the fabricator the freedom to undertake work across a wide range of budget levels. Brio is always looking to offer the right solution for the task and is happy to work with fabricators from the ideas stage through to the project’s fulfilment. Brio has a dedicated external sales force available for one to one consultation and a full technical advice and support service. Brio also offers a full quotation service – Quickquote – which not only gives the price but also full specification and advice on finished door sizes that can be passed on to the customer. Along with its commitment to producing quality product, this service is just part of the Brio service aimed at taking a lot of the pain out of the process for the fabricator.

Holzma Cuts Costs for Shape Furniture With 14 employees and a turnover of nearly £ million, Shape Furniture operates out of a 10,000 sq.ft. facility in Besthorpe near Norwich. The company always provides great service and creative solutions for its clients, whether working on a new fit-out, a refurbishment, acting as a main contractor or as a supplier. Shape’s goal is to complete every job efficiently and to the highest quality possible. To accomplish this, the company continually invests in stateof-the-art equipment and talented staff. “At Shape, we’re always trying to do what we do better,” claims Matthew Jeckells, Shape’s Managing Director. He continues, “We strive to be more efficient so we can pass on these savings to our clients whilst growing our business. “Since day one, we have invested in computer controlled woodworking machinery to ensure precision, flexibility and quality in everything we produce. This approach has been extremely successful for us, however, going forward we wanted to free up production capacity on the CNCs and felt that a beam saw would enable us to do just that.” The Benefits of Dealing Direct with the Manufacturer “Previously, we had always bought machines from agents, but a couple of issues led us down the path of dealing direct with the manufacturers. Firstly, service and support are key factors for us. We felt that by buying the machine direct from the manufacturer it would give us peace of mind and better aftercare. “Secondly, as machines get more technologically advanced, our belief was that advice straight from the horse’s mouth, so to

speak, would be more accurate and relevant. And that’s exactly what happened when we began talking to HOMAG. Initially, we were interested in a basic beam saw that would take the load off our CNC machines, freeing up production and improving the throughput of work in the factory.
“When we explained to the HOMAG team exactly what we wanted the machine to do and how it would fit into the somewhat tight confines of our production line, they immediately recommended the Holzma HPP 250 Easy2Feed model. “Whilst, on the face of it, this was a

higher priced option, it negated the need for us to buy a separate crane or lifting system to load the large panels onto the saw. As a consequence, this more expensive machine actually saved us money. “Now we can drive straight up to the rear of the saw with a forklift, load the boards onto the Easy2Feed scissor lift table integrated in the back machine. The board is then cut on the saw and we move the sized panels directly onto the CNC machines for the next process. “The Easy2Feed lift can deal with panel sizes up to 3100 x 2200 mm. It therefore eliminates the health and safety issues we faced previously when having to manually lift large, heavy boards.” Clear Commercial Benefits “The beam saw has met all our expectations. It has speeded up our production processes and given us better
yield from materials. Previously we were cutting primarily for ease of production, now we’re able to cut for efficiency first and foremost. “In terms of the allocation of labour, one man can now handle tasks that previously required two or three operators. This has enabled us to deploy our staff where they are most productive, further reducing costs. “The cut quality of the saw is excellent and will allow us to introduce a new carcass range into the business to complement our range of vinyl pressed doors. It will also enable us to do more service work for other customers. These new strings to our bow will generate additional revenue streams to the business. “The system is easy to use and all our operators find the CADmatic 4.0 software very user friendly with its clear graphics and simple controls. Once trained by the HOMAG engineer, even

our most junior craftsman has no problems operating the machine. “We have been very impressed with the service we have received from HOMAG UK. Their sales consultant, Charles Smith, is extremely knowledgeable and helpful, as are all the team in the UK and Germany. We have developed a strong, professional relationship with HOMAG and I would certainly recommend them to any company looking to take its business to the next level,” concludes Matthew.

Intelligent Features Increase Productivity For Triesse Ltd Founded over 35 years ago as a supplier of wood based panel products, Triesse has expanded to become one of the UK's leading independent specialist wood based panel processors and veneered, laminated board manufacturers. An important part of Triesse’s growth and continuing success has been its choice of highly reliable production machinery including their latest investment in the Schelling ah8 cut-to-size plant. David Colman, Managing Director of Triesse Ltd, explained that ‘manufacturing today has become increasingly competitive. Production processes have to be squeezed for every last pound per hour and for one more component per shift. Better production machinery is one of the few remaining areas where significant gains can be made. So, to maintain our manufacturing leadership, we purchased the latest ah8 cut-to-size plant technology from Schelling UK Ltd’. Achieving a high degree of automation is becoming even more vital to guarantee a continuous flow of material in a modern manufacturing facility. Born out of this philosophy comes Schelling’s automatic internal turning device which allows for head cut patterns without any interruption to the production flow. Once the head cut is made, the feeder pushes the head cut out and pulls the rest of the board back over the turning device. Furthermore the buffer between the rip cut and cross cut angular transfer increases the capacity immensely as both saws can cut simultaneously while strips are prepared for both saws. The advantages identified by Triesse include shorter cycle times, reduced manual handling and better utilisation of material. Just to push productivity even further, a separate push-off carriage simultaneously loads the rip-cut saw to keep production continuously moving. The whole of the Schelling ah8 is characterised by numerous automatically monitored functions all designed to provide optimal productivity. Triesse want the best possible solution for fast throughput of larger orders while at the same time retaining the option of small batch production, both with the highest dimensional cutting accuracy. Assisted by automatic cutting speed which is adjustable according to the book height both these options were easily achieved. With the aid of innovative technology such as double strip aligners and a powerful 32kW motor performance, the ah8 cut-to-size plant is ideal for both production scenarios, in short: an all-rounder in the industrial field. Against a background of keen competition the importance of organising the sawing operation was vital to achieving the production targets set by Triesse. Schelling’s design and engineering department made it possible and customised the ah8 plant to fit into the space provided; crucially without leaving out any production material buffer zones which ensure every movement is optimised.
30 Panel & Joinery Production JULY/AUGUST 2012
Markus Freuis Managing Director of Schelling UK Ltd, explained, ‘that no two plants are ever the same’. Each cut-to-size plant is designed according to the customer’s wishes and adapted to their requirements and space conditions. Solid conceptualisation combined with well thought-out details ensures a future-proof and highly profitable investment. At Triesse we knew that material loading and handling were essential performance characteristics which would increase the efficiency of the cut-to-size plant. This is why the plant was designed with the option of thin loading and many more additional features to ensure flexibility and help increased productivity. Schelling’s goal is to give each customer what they want and more. Of particular importance to Triesse is the ability to cut an extensive range of dimensions, materials and thicknesses. Because the ah8 plant is fully automated it has the flexibility to change from one material to another at the drop of a hat with the accuracy and capacity required by a volume producer. The whole sawing process is orchestrated by the latest control software (MCS Evolution). This allows the operator to see a real-time simulation of the whole machine working – which features clear operator guidance, with moving graphics on a large 22” TFT screen. This real time visualisation helps reduce operating errors, leaving more time for the operator to focus on production. Key to the increased efficiency is the High Performance Optimisation software (HPO) which delivers measurable performance improvements to the material production yield, utilisation of material and overall cutting time. This concentrated bundle of software and modern technology delivers measurable improvements and actually helps run the machine without any big interference from the operator. To summarize David, explained, ‘working together with Schelling the aim was to generate a cutting philosophy that delivered quality improvements, cost reductions, capacity increases, space benefits and a reduction in manual handling: we have achieved everything and more and are ready for tomorrows business’. Compact Cuts it for Northwest Panel Suppliers All three branches of a leading Northwest chain of independent sheet material suppliers now use Striebig Compact vertical panel saws following two recent purchases. Timber and sheet material importers G E Robinson, of Salford, and associate company Garstang Timber and Building Supplies, of Preston, have bought Compact 4164 models to handle all their sheet material sizing. The Compact replaced an elderly beam saw at Salford. At Preston, it has delivered added efficiency and convenience for customers as panel sizing was previously carried out on a dimension saw in the saw mill. Both saws, supplied by Striebig’s UK agent, T.M. Machinery Sales, are fitted with a 400mm strip cutter accessory for fast and accurate repeat cuts. A third group company, Makerfield Timber and Building Supplies of Wigan, has been using a Compact since 2007. They are used to size a variety of woodbased panels including MDF, plywood, OSB and hardboard, ranging in thickness from 3.2 to 25mm All three businesses are part of Northern Ireland-based Haldane Fisher, a long-time Striebig user. As well as featuring at three of its outlets in the Province, a Compact model has been used at its Douglas, Isle of Man branch since 2005. The Compact 4164 is the smallest machine in Striebig’s nine-strong entrylevel series with a cutting range of 3100 x 1644mm (10 ft x 5 ft) and a maximum depth of cut of 60mm. It features automatic moving backing support and with a powerful 3.9kW motor, and has exceptionally efficient integral TRK dust extraction that surpasses current European health and

WOODWASTE Biomass Campaign Comes to Downing Street Leading furniture industry representatives have today gone to 10 Downing Street to present a petition to the Prime Minister over their concerns about the impact of biomass subsidies on wood prices. This represents the latest phase in a campaign being co-ordinated by FIRA and the British Furniture Confederation (BFC). Many of the industry’s top company executives have put their names to the petition that highlights the extraordinary increase in the cost of wood, its prime raw material, as a consequence of woody biomass subsidies paid to energy producers. Stephen McPartland MP, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group, who took BFC representatives to 10 Downing Street said: “The industry supports well over 100,000 jobs and is a sector full of industrious small enterprises employing highly skilled staff. Current woody biomass subsidies are a significant cause of rising wood prices which are
damaging British furniture businesses.” DECC’s subsidies encourage energy companies to burn wood which is creating an unsustainable bubble in the timber market. Prices are rocketing and demand is growing so fast that the forestry sector has no chance to ever get near to meeting it. Energy producers are simply out-paying manufacturers and this will lead to the collapse of the mainstream British furniture manufacturing base, unless the subsidies are significantly reduced or removed, especially for the burning of newly grown trees. The furniture industry, which generates £7.3 billion of GDP (almost 3 per cent of Britain’s manufacturing output), is calling for the Government to call a halt to these subsidies now and seeks a comprehensive review as to their impact on industry
sectors such as furniture. “We are not look for any advantage ourselves – only a level playing field for all those in the market wanting to create value, whether products or energy, from wood,” said British Furniture Confederation chairman Paul von der Heyde. “At the moment there is an imbalance with the subsidy granted to the power generation industry.” For further information: www.biomass-petition.org www.britishfurnitureconfederation.org.uk

Abrahams & Carlisle’s Big Move Dust Control Systems Ltd has re-housed and upgraded an existing dust plant for leading interior fit-out specialists Abrahams & Carlisle Ltd. The Bradford-based company, now in its 60th year, prides itself on offering a high quality interior fit-out service, to both Private and Public Sectors, including the Entertainment, Hotel and Leisure industry. The business employs around 80 apprentice-trained joiners who work on general and specialist projects across the country which vary in value from £1000 to £4 million. It’s very much a family business with Garry Abrahams and his cousin Tony operating as joint managing directors. Both are grandsons of Douglas Abrahams who, together with Clifford Carlisle, founded the company in 1952. And the family line continues with both Garry and Tony’s sons, Ryan and Ben, employed in the business. The company recently moved its factory to a former warehouse facility, adjacent to the site that the firm has occupied for more than 40 years. The new location, with 34,000 sq. ft. of ground floor space, was the ideal site for the company to relocate to from their old premises which occupied three floors in two separate buildings. Garry Abrahams says: “The move presented us with the opportunity to develop plans to streamline production processes and to create an all-round energy efficient operation. We asked Dust Control Systems to reappraise our dust extraction requirements whilst utilising as much of
our existing dust plant as possible. We already knew of their energy saving credentials and were keen to pursue this avenue by upgrading the system to achieve new levels of efficiency. DCS presented an extremely convincing proposal and worked closely with us over the six week fit-out period, helping with the overall layout of the shops, positioning of machines, and also managing to install all dust extraction spigots in advance of the re-installation of machines. We always considered them to be the best in the business and the professional way in which they handled this project ensured they lived up to their reputation and our expectations” Melvyn Bathgate, sales director at DCS, says: “We were able to extend and modify the existing modular filter to comply with the latest ATEX European Directive and rehouse it on elevated steelwork to feed into a skip in the new yard. The entire extraction system was relocated and upgraded, including the addition of an air return system which will return air back into the factory during the winter months. In addition, the project involved the installation of a new 37kW main fanset and

an energy-saving DCS Dynamic Drive System whereby auto-dampers are fitted to most of the woodworking machines. As the dampers open and close the Dynamic Drive detects any change in volume requirement and adjusts the fan speed accordingly – providing the optimum extraction volume, only when it’s needed.” “We are delighted with the new facility”, said Garry Abrahams. “It ticks all the boxes and DCS played an important role in helping us achieve a smooth transition. We now have a highly effective dust extraction system which is saving us a significant amount of money. This, together with our biomass boiler which burns all our wood waste, and a low energy lighting system installed throughout the site, we are all extremely proud of our energy conserving achievements.

WOODWASTE 100% Safe Waste Disposal with Dustraction At Scenex Sets & Staging Limited Dustraction has completed an extraction project for a client whose own working standards set some fairly high job specifiction standards. In addition to extraction efficiency of non-standard waste materials under unusually difficult space constraints for a customer whose own clients include the likes of Landrover Freelander, Jaguar Cars, HBOS, Royal Mail, TNT and O2, standards are understandably high. All of these big brands are seeking, through national exhibitions and regional stage show events, many on a global scale, to reinforce their own corporate brands and trading visibility. Dustraction’s customer Scenex Sets & Staging Ltd. has installed a new Morbidelli CNC work centre in order to take control of a lot of work that they had traditionally outsourced and they have invested in a new machine with a bigger work table than many of their suppliers which allows them to target physically larger work. The Morbidelli now on the Leicester shop floor at Scenex carries a work table of 3.6 mtrs x 2.2mtrs; in addition to being a bigger table, the Morbidelli is sited under a mezzanine floor and limited height dictated that the extraction hood be carried on a cattinery wire - a cable and jockey wheel - to achieve enough height and mobility for the extraction inlet.

Shavings Into Savings A mould-making factory in Stoke on Trent is making and saving money since purchasing a briquetting machine from Gross UK and a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Since 2008, Stoke on Trent company SPB Moulds has made patterns for metal casting, and supplies foundries across the UK. Whilst looking at ways to reduce business costs, the team spotted an opportunity in the market to supply sustainable alternative fuel, and now receives additional revenue from selling briquettes made from its wood waste. MD of SPB Moulds, Simon Bowers explains, “When we needed to move into a larger factory we hated the thought of having to actually pay for heating, considering the waste we were generating, so looked into what wood waste heaters were available”. A client recommended heaters from Wood Waste Technology, as they had one and were impressed with the excellent manufacturing quality and superb customer service. Following the high commendation, Simon spoke with Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology who helped Simon choose an appropriate model of heater for the business. A WT5 45kw (150,000btu/hr) was ordered, and installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers ready
for SPB Mould’s staff to move into the new unit. The company is delighted to say that it still pays no heating bills, as the wood waste heater keeps the new 4000 square foot workshop and its twelve staff warm throughout the cold winter months. Delighted with the benefits of the new heater, Simon and the team identified an opportunity to utilise the shavings and sawdust generated during manufacture, so looked at investing in a briquette machine. Having experienced excellent after sales service from Wood Waste Technology on the wood burner, Simon was keen to buy a solution recommended by Kurt, so contacted him for information about Gross UK’s range of briquetting machines. SPB Moulds purchased a Genius 2/50 briquetting machine and is now using ALL its wood waste to save and make money. The company has slashed its skip bills, and only needs to hire a skip around once a quarter. Not only is the business now more environmentally friendly, the team also helps other local businesses by taking their wood shavings away for free to process through its briquetting machine. SPB Moulds is currently producing around 700 to 800 kilos of briquettes a week, which is estimated to bring an additional £15,000 of revenue into the business this year, and more in future years as extra wood waste is obtained from other businesses.
Currently the company is only supplying the wholesale market with briquettes, but soon hopes to obtain more shavings so it can also start selling to the general public. During the summer months, SPB Moulds is stockpiling all the briquettes produced, to help with supply when demand is high over winter. Simon concludes, “It’s just win-win for us. We can’t put a figure on how much we’re saving on heating bills as we’ve never paid them, but we’ve estimated we’re saving at least £200 a month on skip charges, plus have created an additional growing revenue stream for the business by selling the briquettes. We’re over the moon with the return on investment we’re getting, and would recommend more joinery businesses take a look at the opportunities that are out there to save and make money from wood waste.” Managing Director of Wood Waste Technology and Gross UK, Kurt Cockroft says, “We have a wide range of products that can help businesses save money on waste disposal, eliminate or reduce heating bills and transform wood waste into cash. By taking time to find out about clients requirements, we can recommend the best solution. We are delighted that SPB Moulds is benefitting from both investments.” Gross UK supplies a wide range of economical and heavy duty dependable German shredders and briquetters, which come in various sizes and specifications to enable businesses to buy a machine suitable to requirements. Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.

The New BÜTFERING 200 Series – perfect for the UK market BÜTFERING has recently unveiled the new SWT 200 Series of wide belt sanding machines which HOMAG UK believes is perfect for the UK market. The range includes single, twin and triple headed machines, all with a standard working width of 1350mm. Designed as a good ‘all-rounder’ for solid wood, veneer and lacquer sanding, the 200 Series offers a choice between models with segmented pad technology or those featuring a simpler ‘rise and fall air cushion pad’. “We’re really excited about this new range from BÜTFERING,” enthuses Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at HOMAG UK. He continues, “The 200 Series is just perfect for the UK market where many of our customers are looking for a true all-rounder that delivers exceptional quality.” A major strength of the new BÜTFERING SWT 200 Series is its constant passline design. This enables more convenient processing of longer or heavier parts, along with the use of fixed height in-feed and out-feed support tables. The abrasive belt length is 2150mm in all 200 Series models, making it more convenient to handle when regular belt changes are required. The length also fits logically within the total BÜTFERING range – 100 Series uses a 1900mm belt and machines from the 300 series upwards use 2620mm belts. The combi-head is used in all models; here the abrasive belt follows a triangular path. It runs around both a contact roller and pad allowing the choice to use either tool as needed. With twin or triple head machines the combi-head is the second or third head respectively, being preceded by either one or two contact rollers. All models in the SWT 200 Series use a touchscreen control and start, according to the program selected, at the press of a single button. Operating heads are driven

If a motor driven fan is required at a later date, this is easy to retro-fit, sitting conveniently inside the machine frame to minimise floor space and reduce noise. For veneer and lacquer sanding it is necessary to reduce the abrasive belt cutting speed and so a frequency invertor drive is an option on all segmented pad models. In a similar way, sanding belt and part cleaning
systems can be installed, along with different brush types dependent upon application. Variable feed speed is a standard. “The 200 Series will be produced in BÜTFERING’s German factory which, later this year, will benefit from a new production hall shared with the Group’s CNC specialist WEEKE. It is really encouraging to see HOMAG Group companies investing in new facilities and
it’s even more encouraging for us that they are designing and producing equipment that takes into account the specialist needs of the UK market,” concludes Brooks. For further in formation: Tel: 01332 856500 Fax: 01332 856400 Email: info@homag-uk.co.uk www.homag-uk.co.uk

LONGPRÉ Furniture LONGPRÉ Furniture is so pleased with its first Kündig sander, purchased in 2006, that when the expanding company required an additional sander in 2010, Longpré had no hesitation about acquiring another, almost identical, Kündig sander. Longpré Furniture is a design-led company, which has its roots in the fine art of English cabinet making. Founded in 1990 by cabinet maker, Paul Longpré, the company’s reputation has gone from strength to strength so that now, over 20 years later, Longpré has established itself as one of the top furniture making companies in the country. The thirty-strong team follows the traditional practices of all bespoke cabinet making workshops, where craftsmanship remains central to the overall production process. Longpré has an international client-base of design professionals and private clients, and a commission can range from an individual piece of furniture to the refurbishment of a luxury penthouse, yacht or flagship commercial property; and the craftsmen work in a variety of materials, including glass, leather, fabric and metal, alongside wood. The quality of the work produced demands the highest standard of machinery and equipment. In 2006 the company found that its existing sander “just didn’t do the job. It couldn’t sand veneers and, with the company growing as well, we needed something a lot more modern.” Longpré carefully evaluated three makes of sanders, including seeking out personal recommendations. “We spoke to other companies and other people, and they recommended the Kündig sander. We
arranged to go and see some in action and were impressed,” said James Couper, Production Manager. As well as the quality of work produced, a significant advantage was the Kündig’s user-friendliness. “We looked at a couple of other brands and they were fiddly to use. The Kündig is very user friendly, and everyone picks it up very quickly.” The model purchased by Longpré in 2006 was a Kündig Duplex (now called Premium)-2 1350 RE-L, with a first calibrating roller followed by a second electronic segmental sanding pad for veneers and lacquer. Additional equipment for the lacquer sanding was the variable speed to the abrasive and belt cleaning blowers, which are action controlled to reduce air consumption, along with a vacuum conveyor to ensure the workpiece is held firmly in place whilst denibbing. In 2010, the company expanded, opening a second workshop. James says that when selecting a sander for this facility, “We already knew how good a Kündig was, as the sander had been very reliable and did everything we wanted, so we didn’t bother to look anywhere else at all.” James adds that the two sanders are “virtually identical: the first one has a vacuum bed and the second one has not, and that is the only difference.” He is very happy with both sanders. When asked about the advantages the Kündig sander had brought the company, James highlighted the time saving, the quality of the finish and the reliability. He says, “You have no issue with it messing up the work, which is important when using expensive materials. Due to its consistent calibration, it is very precise. What it says

on the screen is what the piece of wood will come out as, you don’t need to check it all the time.” The sanders are serviced once a year by engineers from Kündig UK, a relationship that works very well, James told PW&SS. James is also very pleased with the back up and support he receives from Carl O’Meara of Kündig UK. “If there ever is a problem, it is usually a user problem, but he is always very helpful. An engineer will come down and set it all up and go through the procedure with the operator, and if there are any further problems, they are very helpful on the phone.” While the sanders are used principally on solid wood, they also work on veneered panels and MDF. James said: “We use them for virtually everything that is flat and needs sanding: frames, doors and individual pieces of wood, for example. They are constantly in use and very reliable.” Having received a recommendation of the Kündig sander from several companies, James says he would be very happy to recommend both the sander and the service Carl O’Meara has provided to others. TopSides and DesignSides are powerful yet simple design options for pot and pan drawers. TopSides in steel, plastic or glass are simply clipped in between the railing and the frame, adding stylish storage space inside the drawer, whereas a totally bespoke look can be created by using DesignSide instead of a railing. With partial or full-extension runners, InnoTech comes in a standard 470mm drawer depth to make the most of UK cabinet sizes, but different depths are available for bedroom and bathroom applications. “This is German engineering for the kitchen at its best,” said Hettich UK managing director Tim Leedham. “The details and quality behind the cabinet fascia are becoming increasingly important in kitchen specification, and with this in mind, InnoTech is a fantastic sales tool.” For further information: Tel: 0161 872 9552 Email: info@uk.hettich.com www.hettich.com/uk
International Timber Launches New Product for Windows and Doors International Timber, the UK’s leading importer and supplier of timber products, has expanded its already extensive range with the launch of Accoya Face Laminated Components for windows and doors. This high performing, cost effective window and door product is brought to the UK through an exclusive agreement between Accsys Plc, NFP Europe and International Timber. Accoya Face Laminated Components is a sustainably sourced manufactured product developed using a non-toxic modification process. It is a high performing, efficient alternative to tropical hardwoods and has a Class 1 durability rating on the weather facing elements. Due to its dimensional

FINSA For Diversity In Veneered Board Products In the UK FINSA are able to offer the greatest range and diversity of specialised veneered board products This includes their Iberpan 400 lightweight MDF board in thicknesses up to 60mm and available in 8ft x 4ft and 10ft x 4ft sheets with a wide spectrum choice of veneer species. Interesting options are their Multi Specie Veneer service which allows designers to mix different species of real wood veneers giving fascinating contrasts for the growing demand from the hospitality interiors sector and also for corporate furniture and interiors. Another increasingly popular veneers surface held in stock at FINSA’s Birkenhead distribution centre is the Bleach Oak Veneer – a beautiful surface that gives a White Oak effect as an alternative to re-constituted veneer and offers a surface that offers the tradition of Oak but without the strong grain and colour variation for a more consistent appearance. Highly desirable and currently in vogue is the Segato Veneer which gives a sawn cut effect across the grain – this look is highly effective in public environments and the latest favourite for up-market shop and retail display areas. Tinted veneers is another area of choice offered by FINSA which gives what is known as the fume effect to create fashionable hues and colours while further heightening the natural grains. Cedar Lebanon and Eucalyptas as species work well with this process while offering the customer a better value and sustainable option. Another unique substrate only from FINSA is the Superpan board which, when veneered, offers a superior surface quality, improved strength and machinability while offering better value at the same time. Another alternative from FINSA UK’s portfolio is being able to offer re-constituted which give amazingly consistent colour and structure from quantities from 5 sheets to
48 Panel & Joinery Production JULY/AUGUST 2012
5,000 sheets. All of this service and availability is the result of FINSA being a multi-national woodbased sheet material manufacturer which operates a specialist Veneer division at one of their factories in northern Spain. The veneers are sourced worldwide and meticulously matched, stitched and packaged for lamination to core board products. The range of species and patterns is extensive and FINSA deal with individual customers on special projects and bespoke requirements. So, in the UK, FINSA is adept at supplying its customers with veneers of the most demanding criteria, be it width of crowns, no natural defects, sequence matched, book matched, slip matched, mismatched, wide leaves, thin leaves or other desired effects. FINSA UK will work with individual customers to deliver each project to perfection. Finally one more special board option on which to carry beautiful veneered surfaces is their FinLight product which is available in thicknesses ranging from 36mm up to 61mm. The requirement for this type of product is coming mainly from the healthy reproduction furniture sector, office furniture manufacturers as well as the burgeoning leisure interior sector for hotels, bars, restaurants and clubs. All of these now recognise the huge advantage of a beautiful and superior surface finish for large thick pieces with a significant decrease in weight. FinLight is a light panel consisting of thin MDF faces with a 300kg/m core. It accepts standard handling cutting and edging processes and will accept any industry standard fittings while retaining excellent screw holding properties. In the UK FINSA have sales and distribution headquarters at Birkenhead on Merseyside from where they service the UK market and hold stocks of all veneered board products.

Dartmoor Makes A Welcome Return To The UK Market James Latham, the country’s leading importer and distributor of timber and wood based panel products, has reintroduced Dartmoor veneered boards to the UK market after an absence of almost seven years. A previously well-known and highly respected real wood veneer brand, Dartmoor was always associated with delivering a high quality, consistent product that made it suitable for many applications. Steve Frommont, Lathams’ product
champion for veneered boards commented, “For many years, customers from a wide range of industries – shop fitting to furniture production – would specify “Dartmoor” veneered boards for their high quality and excellent consistency. The product disappeared from the market when production ceased at the Norbord factory at South Molton in Devon a few years ago, but we are delighted to have brought it back and already it’s been incredibly well received by our customers.”
Lathams are currently in the process of registering the ‘Dartmoor’ brand name as a trademark which demonstrates the long term commitment and support it plans to put behind the brand moving forward. Dartmoor Caberwood MDF is now produced exclusively for James Latham, to its own veneer-grading specification and is available from all nine of James Latham’s panel products’ sites. Dartmoor branded product is available in a wide range of species, thicknesses and sheet sizes.

Ostermann Delivers Edgings In 24 Hours The edging specialist is staking its confidence in growth and a further expansion in the UK. Ostermann’s UK subsidiary, Ostermann UK Ltd opened a new logistics centre in Droitwich, England in March 2012. By moving into this new office and warehousing facility Ostermann is hitting the ground running with huge additions to its service with delivery times of 24 hours throughout the UK.
Service Ostermann style Ostermann is widely acknowledged as a provider of innovative solutions to the furniture manufacturing industry. Over 20 years ago Ostermann was the first company on the market with a Cross-Reference List. Today it is the largest anywhere in Europe. It encompasses some 65 board manufacturers with over 120,000 edging correlations in over 2,000 colours and finishes. The sheer variety of the product range is one of Ostermann’s cornerstones to their service concept. Another factor is that Ostermann keeps stock of just about all of these edgings and is able to despatch them immediately and all of that from lengths of just 1 metre and upwards.
The friendly Ostermann UK team
Ostermann UK is building up strong business relations to enable them to be a reliable day-to-day business partner for furniture manufacturers. With the satisfaction of each and every customer as their objective Ostermann UK regards the continual enhancement of its service in the United Kingdom as a task to be performed every single day. Taking possession of new warehousing facilities in Droitwich is one large step in this direction. Ostermann UK – a story of success Formed to bring the Ostermann philosophy to the United Kingdom. Ostermann UK Ltd has been headed up by Sabine Kinner since it was formed in August 2010, and under her leadership the team is constantly expanding.
“From the very outset I was convinced that the Ostermann standard of service could greatly satisfy many customers in the UK, but the speed of our growth over the last two years is extremely pleasing and makes me proud of my super sales team!”, is how the committed Managing Director sums up the rapid growth of Ostermann UK. In March 2012 she and her team took possession of the office and warehousing facility in Droitwich, some 40 miles from Birmingham and readied themselves for yet more growth. The edging specialist Angie Roddis, Inacio Mankulu, Richard Hands and Elaine Griffiths along with the Sales Representative Stephen Parsons and also warehouse staff Craig Lymer and Antonio Mankulu have 120 m of office space and

From this base the edging specialist can draw upon the modern logistics centre in Bocholt, Germany and thanks to the tried and tested logistics processes, is able to guarantee just-in-time delivery. Rigorously aligned towards the needs of tomorrow. Ostermann UK’s new warehousing complex is designed in accordance to the latest state of the art facilities. Alongside the office wing, the total floor space of 2,000 m will in future accommodate a high-bay warehouse, a long parts store and a hazardous goods store. “First and foremost the decisive criteria for moving to a new logistics centre was the satisfaction of our customers.” explains Sabine Kinner before adding, "this expansion in capacity enables us to meet incoming orders not merely with 24 hours but by 9 am the next day in the UK." So British customers can already look forward to even faster delivery times. The central location for the new logistics centre is not only critical for delivery time but also ideal for the Ostermann sales representative Stephen Parsons. From the
new location he happily sets out regularly to introduce customers to our edging range and our mobile handheld edge banding machines. The machine demonstrations are usually carried out on site at the customer or in-house at Ostermann in Droitwich, depending on customer preference. Ostermann’s logistics service – another of our core areas of expertise With a new warehousing capacity exceeding 2,000 pallet bays, Ostermann is massively extending its service to the British market, meaning that customers in the UK can continue to rely on Ostermann’s widely-appreciated delivery service and order their edgings for a next day service. Just a year and a half after establishing Ostermann UK Ltd this step sees Ostermann underline its expertise within the European market. “The new logistics centre represents a significant contribution to securing our UK base and to the development of the region”, says the subsidiary chief Sabine Kinner, who see the new facility as a tremendous
opportunity both for customers and employees. “Because the quantity of incoming orders is continually growing, all workplaces are kitted out with cutting-edge technical equipment.” This is part of Ostermann’s commitment to an efficient order process. “Every day we are working at expanding our range, optimising delivery times and making the order process as customer-friendly as it can be – after all service such as this in the UK is only available from Ostermann,” Mrs. Kinner continues. The innovative company is already one of the leading edging providers in the UK and with its new logistics centre, it is forming a basis upon which to enhance its market position further.

Decorative Panels Latest dp-decor Additions Design innovation has long been recognised by Decorative Panels Lamination as essential in the fast moving and fashion conscious furniture industry. Now continuous development with printing partners has led to the launch of three incredibly realistic new additions to the already extensive dpdecor range. Durham Acacia, Swiss Elm and Kaunas Pine are new woodgrain designs that are indistinguishable from natural wood veneer, a feature of all dpdecor range products; the result is a panel with a warm and tactile feel which

extends the product usability in to every aspect of furniture design and production. Durham Acacia has a smooth creamy woodgrain that coordinates and compliments natural wood tones which work particularly well with whites and creams. The design is cleverly formatted to be useable in both vertical and horizontal planes lending itself to applications such as wardrobe doors. Swiss Elm is a woodgrain full of character with wonderful detailing. The use of an optical emboss invites you to run your fingers over its tactile surface, while its tonal qualities
blend with earthy unicolours as well as a paler palette. Kaunas Pine, an update of a classic, has mellow warm tones and delicately yet strikingly grained which works well with traditional as well as modern furniture designs, this making it the next generation of this essential core product.
