NEWS Emissions From Power Generation Using Wood 80% Greater Than Coal Power Major bioenergy accounting flaws have been uncovered recently. One of the biggest finds is that, over a 20-year period, emissions from power generation using wood from conifer plantations are 1879 g/kWh*. That's 80% greater than coal power. Over a 40-year period, emissions are lower because the trees have had longer to re-capture carbon; but even then, biomass emissions would be 49%* greater than coal power. Use Wood Wisely highlights that burning whole trees in power stations would exacerbate the problem of global warming, undermining goals of reducing our greenhouse gases by 2050 and meeting low carbon energy targets. For more information: www.usewoodwisely.co.uk. Tel: 01786 812 225 www.norbord.co.uk.

The UK Needs 72 Million Tonnes Of Wood Each Year To Keep Up With Biomass Demand The UK currently produces 10 million tonnes of wood each year but with 42 new biomass power stations proposed across the UK, we will need to find additional sources. This means that we will need to import at least 80%* of the biomass we want to burn by 2020 which is a serious threat to forests worldwide; we will also deplete wood supply in the UK. The Use Wood Wisely campaign encourages a logical sequence of wood use

- building and making things from wood before it is burned for energy at the end of its use. See www.usewoodwisely.co.uk. For further information: Tel: 01786 812 225 www.norbord.co.uk.

AWARDS

Hanex & IDS support Winning Student Hanex and IDS support award winning student, Michael Harris, with the creation of furniture design concept Digital Desk 21, winner of the Future Makers Design Award 2014. Surface materials distributor IDS has donated sheets of its Hanex solid surfacing material in vibrant Orange to Michael Harris for the development of a contemporary furniture piece titled Digital Desk 21 which is a contemporary take on the classic writing desk. On June 11, Harris and his striking furniture piece won the coveted Future Makers Design Award 2014 from the Craft Council of Ireland. The award winning desk is designed for today's vibrant and open living / working spaces, and to be just as comfortable when using traditional pen and paper as it is with the latest digital equipment. Harris, a mature student, is studying for a BSC in Furniture Design at the renowned GMIT Letterfrack in Ireland. It is a National Centre of Excellence in Furniture Design and Wood technology, established in 1987. The Hanex solid surfacing was used to create a boldly coloured inlaid worksurface, chosen by the designer for its silky smooth matt finish to contrast with the open grain of the ash timber. The solid surface

provided a durable and user friendly surface to write on, with the colour and texture providing a visual and sensual treat to the end user. Hanex solid surfacing is available in a choice of 80 colours and designs and is exclusively distributed by IDS. With its ability to be seamlessly jointed and thermoformed, the material offers designers endless creative possibilities for interior fittings and furniture. The product comes in sheets sizes 12mm x 3680mm x 760mm on all decors, and 6mm x 2490mm x 760mm on the specialist ranges. In terms of functionality, the desk is higher than the average desk, designed to be used with a saddle stool and promote healthy posture. The legs are tapered and splayed outwards to give the desk a confident and robust stance. The large shallow drawer gives ample storage, while the discreet power cable storage and access point at the back of the desk help keep the desk clutter free by removing unwanted cables and charges. Says Harris: “Quality and longevity were of utmost importance to me, in build quality, and the materials I used. I wanted to put forward a bold design of the “right now”, contemporary in the true sense of the word,

but keep an elegance and element of timelessness about it. I wanted the desk to be digital device friendly. I have used clean lines and angled geometric surfaces to create a strong piece with a hidden complexity and thoughtfulness. The piece commands the space it occupies; it has a strong presence, and draws the viewer in to investigate.” Hanex is exclusively distributed by IDS nationwide, the UK’s largest surface materials distributor ensuring fast and flexible delivery.

Digital Desk 21 features a Hanex orange solid surface top, donated by IDS. The desk has been designed by Michael Harris, a student at GMIT Frack college in Ireland. Harris has won the coveted Future Makers Design Award 2014 for the striking contemporary furniture piece.

EVENTS

W14 – The Show You Must See The biennial national exhibition for joinery and furniture manufacturers opens on 5th October. It’s the biggest and most optimistic show for many years. W14 looks set to be the most important edition of the manufacturers’ national show for years. It’s not just a matter of size, although the show totally fills its 3 NEC halls and takes its place as one of the largest UK trade shows. More important is the diversity and balance this show has achieved with an exhibitor list spanning the great names in machinery, components and materials from across the world. Readers of Panel and Joinery Production are likely to be just daring to feel optimistic about prospects for the industry. The UK economy is ahead of anything happening in the Euro Zone and there is a new appreciation of the importance of manufacturers. There is a general cry to build more houses, with political parties

12 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014

seeking to outdo each other in the ambition of their construction programme. With that comes more construction work in providing an infrastructure for those houses. As we know, furniture demand tracks construction pretty closely so we can all see a solidly based recovery, maybe even a boom ahead. Despite the need to take a day away from the office or factory, it’s further good news for manufacturers that W14 is scheduled for the autumn (5-8 October at the NEC Birmingham). For those in search of new machinery, upgrading after some years of ‘making do’ or interested in the latest production techniques W14 is a must – running machinery and the expertise of an entire industry at your disposal. An already stunning machinery content has been further enhanced by the decision of Biesse to return to exhibiting at the show. A huge Biesse stand in hall 6 sees the company show in style this autumn.

With Homag, SCM, RW, Felder, DaltonsWadkin and JJ Smith leading the machinery who’s who in the halls, this is a feast of technology – much of which runs throughout the exhibition. W14 delights in its ability to showcase these big names, confident in their product and keen to meet the market. To see the best in components and materials has, in previous, years required a trip to German or Italian exhibitions – sometimes even further afield,. Now the market has recognised the potential in the UK and an impressive line-up of product is in the halls at W14. A glance down the exhibitor list will reveal that the show delivers on its promise to offer everything for the Joinery and Furniture Manufacturer… making it an incredible proposition and a must see event for anyone seriously planning to exploit better market conditions. Something told us that W14 was going to develop rapidly this edition when global

market leaders Blum decided to show to UK manufacturers. Blum’s presence at the show is part of a trend which has seen a rapid take-up by materials and components suppliers. A glance at the floor plan shows significant players in all areas of supply to furniture and joinery manufacturers will be ready to meet you at W14. Indeed, the ‘meeting’ aspect is right at the heart of all exhibitions. Face to face contact between supplier and customer usually produces exciting developments. Exhibitions are really the only media in which the instant two way exchange is possible. Seeing and feeling the products, watching the demonstrations and applying them to your own business. Finding people you can do business with and stimulating your own thought process. All of this is peculiar to an exhibition, benefitting your business in many different ways. If you are a joinery or furniture manufacturer looking to boost profitability in a buoyant market then you must be sure to visit W14.

YOUR CHANCE TO WIN AN IPAD WHEN YOU REGISTER FOR W14 Your day at the NEC will probably be the most important opportunity in recent years. Capitalise on it by registering to visit free of charge at www.w14exhibition.com. When you do, as an added bonus you will gain free entry to a monthly draw to win an IPad. Growing with HOMAG at W14 HOMAG UK has always been a staunch supporter of the UK’s major woodworking show held every two years at the NEC in Birmingham – this year designated W14. Underlining its position as the global market leader, HOMAG will yet again have the dominant stands at the exhibition and is looking forward to a lively show. “An exhibition like W14 is so important for the industry,” enthuses Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director for HOMAG UK. He continues, “The UK is home to some of the finest furniture, panel and joinery companies and the show is a wonderful opportunity for us as an industry to give these manufacturers the chance to see all the latest innovations under one roof.”

‘Growing with HOMAG’ – More than just a slogan “The HOMAG Group’s theme this year is ‘Growing with HOMAG’ and it is so much more than just a clever marketing tagline. The success and size of the Group is, in some ways, its own worst enemy because smaller woodworking businesses can easily fall into the trap of thinking that HOMAG

Group machinery is beyond their reach. “In reality, that couldn’t be further from the truth. The German parent company has invested millions of Euros developing a

range of machinery, from edgebanders and saws to CNC processing centres and sanding machines, designed specifically for start-up and small woodworking businesses.

Mirka Innovates at W14 Focusing on continuous product development enabling customers to make efficiencies and control costs while delivering a high quality finish, Mirka UK will be presenting a host of sanding and polishing innovations at W14 this year on stand 6E619. For the first time at W14, Mirka will be presenting its air sanding technology. The Mirka Pneumatic Random Orbital Sanders (PROS) are effective and durable tools for professional sanding. They are ergonomically designed and made from lightweight, hi-tech materials to create tools with optimal strength and user comfort. These machines are built for maximum dust extraction at low suction power and have a low noise level even when operating at their 12,000 rpm maximum. DEROS, the world’s lightest electric sanding machine in its class, featuring a brushless motor combined with patented driving technology, will be available to test drive. The sander plugs into an ordinary power supply, making it easy to move around, and is suitable for multiple sanding operations producing a highly effective smooth finish. It delivers a rapid, efficient, consistently powerful performance comparable to a conventional 500W electric machine, even under heavy load, and is economical to use, reducing energy costs. Its ‘closed construction’ prevents dust from entering the motor, avoiding typical wear and tear damage experienced by electric

machines. DEROS’ low profile delivers good control over the sanding process and its two-hand, ergonomic grip, effective for heavy sanding applications, combined with its low noise and vibration levels, reduces arm fatigue and minimises the risk of Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome. Mirka’s next generation dust-free Abranet® Ace will be on display, designed to increase production and speed for tougher, more demanding sanding applications in a variety of industrial sectors, whilst reducing costs. With a grit range of P80 – P800, this premium net product features ceramic grains that deliver a faster, more aggressive sanding operation. The improved robust grain impregnation prolongs the life and ensures fewer sanding defects and less grain breakage. The tougher velour backing provides better disc grip adhesion and enhanced edge wear, making Abranet Ace more effective and longer lasting and its highly visible reverse side print pattern is much more user-friendly. The high gloss solutions kit will be demonstrated on Mirka’s stand offering a quick, simple and cost-effective system that enables customers to high gloss a range of lacquered surfaces and solid surface materials. The kit offers two processes - a single compound polishing method involving more sanding; and a two-

compound polishing process involving more polishing. Both procedures can achieve a 95 to 98 gloss following the simple pictorial chart included in the kit. The set contains everything required for ‘the complete solution’ from the patented Microstar film discs, polishing compounds, microfibre cloths, Abralon finishing discs, mops and pads through to the correct backing pad for the polisher. Customers can also purchase a Mirka 180mm professional polisher in a case to accompany the kit at a reduced rate when purchased together. Also on show will be Mirka’s Ultimax wide belts, which are manufactured using a groundbreaking new production process called ‘Selective Coating™ Technology’ (patent pending). This features a series of tiny cavities designed into the abrasive material which work to prevent clogging efficiently. This innovative new technology, along with special abrasive grains, produces aggressive performance and excellent edge wear resistance while keeping the sanding surface cool. Together these features ensure a longer lifespan and reduced material usage per job. The belts are available in grits P80-P180, P240-P320. In addition, Mirka’s new abrasive film product, Microstar, designed for mattening and paint rectification of top- and clear coat applications, will be on display in belt format. Microstar has a special stearate layer and a smooth film backing. Used for dry sanding only, this product has a high quality finish and lasts longer as it doesn’t clog as easily as traditional products. It produces a fine scratch pattern that is easy to polish out and is recommended to be used with a 5mm interface pad. SCM Latest Machines Displayed on 4 Stands at W14 SCM Group, the World and UK’s leading manufacturer and supplier of Woodworking and Panel Processing machinery, will take the opportunity to show their latest machinery innovations at the W14 Exhibition, NEC, 5 - 8th October, taking a much larger space than occupied at W12. Covering an area of 624 square metres with 4 adjoining stands, new machines from the classical machine range, SCM's Premium Division and Industrial, Housing and Furniture Divisions will all be running to demonstrate to visitors the latest developments that have recently taken place by the SCM Group within their manufacturing facilities in Italy. SLIM LINE is an exclusive STEFANI patent being exhibited. It is a new, simple and economic edge banding technology, ensuring maximum finishing quality for processing of straight and soft-formed profiles. In traditional edge banding, glue is

applied to the panel. With SLIM LINE glue is distributed on the edge through a slot device. Therefore, the glue pot and consequently all the maintenance associated with it are eliminated. A thinner glue line ensures the very best quality of edge banding. Distributing glue on the edge is much more efficient than applying on the panel, as the panel porosity doesn’t allow a uniform distribution. The more uniform surface of the edge enables far less glue to be used compared with traditional edge banding. This translates into an almost absent glue layer thickness, so obtaining an excellent quality of the finished panel and great savings in glue consumption. SCM will be introducing the new Pratix S22 31B CNC machining centre for nesting operations and it is compact, safe and easyto-use. Pratix S is the solution for those woodworking, panel and furniture companies machining with the Nesting

process, various types of materials including solid wood, panels, MFC, MDF and plastics, with the requirement of factory floor space optimisation and operators with their first experiences with the use of CNC Machining Centres. The Machining Centre, Pratix S, has been conceived and designed in order to assure three main advantages - compact as it is believed to be the most compact machine on the market, taking up to 50% less floor space than others. Secondly, safety, as the machining centre is equipped with “bumpers” safety protections directly on the head, and this means top safety levels, best accessibility to the worktable compared to any other protection type, and maximum productivity, with the possibility of alternated work processing, therefore eliminating or reducing the loading and unloading times. Thirdly, very easy to use - Pratix S introduces a new and easier way to control

A new SCM Ti 5 Electronic Spindle Moulder with tilting electrospindle as standard, the exclusive choice for every joiner's successful machining will be on display. Purchasing a "L’invincibile" machine means a customer installs a customised solution because it is a result of years of experience, technical research and Italian creativity. Table size 1200 x 780mm. With many advantages over competitor's machines, the Ti 5 is fitted with a +/- 45 degree tilting electrospindle - CNC Machining Centre technology but now available for the joinery, carpentry or woodworking manufacturer. Total machining precision is guaranteed and with the abscence of vibration due to the perfectly balanced structure of the electrospindle ensures a top quality finish on all components machined. The

electrospindle’s direct drive eliminates maintenance procedures that are common with conventional belt driven systems. The "FAST" sectional worktable is the best support for the work piece as it provides support for the work piece being machined and is also close to the tool, allowing the adjustment with mounted tools. The "FLEX" fence is immediately in the correct position. A single simple movement to retract and re-position in an instant and accurately position the fence on the worktable with such precision that no other control is necessary (SCM patent). The "Easy" feature is the operating advantage for easy operator assistance. Integrated and fast control of all dedicated functions on the Ti 5. These features translate into immediate improvements in productivity and guarantees the capability and the full potential of the machine. On display will be an SCM Sandya 300 RCS Wide Belt Sander, with 1100mm working width that is ideal for small and medium-size woodworking, door and panel companies as it can offer solid wood and panel calibrating and veneered panel sanding operations, plus any other sanding requirements with a working thickness of 4

PREVIEW AMS Launch New Vertical Panel Saw Brand Into UK Market Leicestershire based Advanced Machinery Services (AMS) has announced the launch of a new range of vertical panel saws that will premiere at the W14 exhibition, in the NEC, Birmingham this October. Designed specifically for the entry level customer, these European engineered and manufactured saws offer both quality and low price. AMS director, Steve Foster explains, “The market for sizing large panels continues to grow apace and for some time now, we’ve been looking for a high quality, value for money brand of vertical panel saws to distribute in the UK. “To carry out this type of panel sizing efficiently requires a reliable, accurate saw that can consistently to do the job day in, day out. It needs to be a ‘no nonsense’ product that has a small footprint and with our new Primus brand of vertical panel saws, we’re confident we’ve found the perfect fit. The models we’re importing

from Europe come with a scoring saw and LED displays as standard, so they are well specified.” The first model available in the UK will feature an automatic moveable table capable of cutting panels 4100mm x 2100mm. Panels can be cut in the vertical or horizontal and the machine has a digital visualiser for the perfect adjustment of cuts. Despite the low price, it is a very wellengineered product featuring a completely welded frame. The panel support table has PVC-profiled listels that can be moved automatically to avoid contact with the circular blade in horizontal cuts. AMS has invested heavily to ensure the launch of this new product range is a success. The new Primus vertical panel saws will be fully supported with spares and service via the well-established AMS network throughout the UK. The company will hold stocks of main spares at its Leicestershire facility with most other spares being available within 48 hours

from the manufacturer in Europe. “We’re really excited with this new addition to our portfolio,” enthuses Foster, “The saws are designed and manufactured in Europe by a specialist vertical panel saw company with a strong reputation. “There is no doubt as to the performance of the product. The really impressive part, however, is the price. People just can’t believe it when we tell them how low the investment required is to buy one. “Visitors to our stand No. 8C335 at W14, NEC Birmingham will be able to see the Primus saws in the flesh, so to speak, and with the interest we’ve had already we are confident we have a winner on our hands,” concludes Foster.

PREVIEW New Combilift 4WSL at W14 Customised handling solutions Combilift will once again be flying the flag for the materials handling sector at W14 with a selection of its customised forklifts which have become a firm favourite in the timber, panels and furniture industries. Since the company launched its first C4000 4way model in 1998 more than 22,000 units have now been sold worldwide and the company leads the way in providing safe and space saving solutions for long and bulky products as well as palletised loads. New at W14 is the Combilift 4WSL, a two directional sideloader available with 5t and 6t load capacities which was developed for reliable, robust and fast operation when moving timber across extensive sites and offers considerable benefits over other

machines on the market. Overheating during prolonged operation is a common problem with many sideloaders but Combilift has counteracted any risk of this by incorporating a single Bosch Rexroth variable piston hydrostatic drive motor coupled with a rugged and proven JCB differential axle as used on the JCB 3CX backhoe model. This enables long distance travel at high speeds with no concern of overheating. Very low maintenance wet brakes are fitted as standard on the drive and front steering axles. As always, driver comfort and safety was a priority in the design stages and the cab features a deep suspension seat with joystick control, and a tilting steering column for easy entry and exit. Pneumatic tyres make for a smooth ride across uneven

surfaces such as cobbles, and the fully glazed front panel in the cab considerably enhances visibility for the operator. As the engine is situated in a low level compartment underneath the platform excellent visibility when reversing is also ensured. Other exhibits will include the compact 4-way Combi-CB counterbalance design truck available with capacities from 2.5 to 4t with various power options, plus a model from the original C series. PREVIEW Quiet, Dust-Free, and Runs at Half the Price Dust Control Systems has commissioned an energy-saving dust extraction plant for Showerwall’s bathroom panel production facility. The custom-designed dust plant serves the manufacturing premises for Showerwall – a waterproof panelling system consisting of high pressure laminate bonded onto an MDF core. Based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, the site processes more than 210,000m of board per year. Investing in a state-of-the-art dust extraction system was one element of a complete re-location programme which involved moving existing panel processing machinery from the company’s old site, then re-installing and commissioning at the new premises. DCS engineers were consulted well in advance to fully assess the requirements and their brief was to devise a scheme that would satisfy all performance needs, whilst also achieving minimum downtime by having the necessary plant

and equipment in place to reconnect machines as they came back on line. With an external area on the residential side of the building earmarked to house the new dust plant, Showerwall were resolute from the outset that the system should be silenced to an acceptable level. To this end, DCS installed both the main fan and waste fan within sound enclosures, and the plant also benefitted from the installation of an Ecogate on-demand system which optimises fan speeds, thereby reducing extraction volumes which results in lower noise levels. To complete the soundproofing process, Showerwall commissioned the construction of an acoustic enclosure which surrounds the whole dust plant. The compact DCS filter employed is an NFSZ modular unit, fitted with highperformance ‘Superbag’ polyester filter bags. It has an airflow capacity of 20,500m3/hr and is capable of efficiently coping with varying loads of wood dust and chips. The filter plant incorporates a rotary

valve and waste conveying system which transfers woodwaste directly to a sealed box cart. An ECOGATE greenBOX12 controller, in conjunction with a variable speed drive, automatically adjusts the speed of the main extraction fan as woodworking machines come on line or shut down – resulting in projected power savings of over 50% versus a traditional system. Also incorporated into the plant is a spark detection and extinguishing system which comprises a detection zone within the ductwork which triggers a water extinguisher if a spark is detected. Niki Gething, Showerwall Production Manager, says: “Everyone here is delighted with the DCS plant which provides us with an automated system that quietly and efficiently goes about the task of dust extraction. We were also very impressed with the standard of work and the way DCS handled every aspect of what was a very time-contingent contract.” For further information: Tel: 0800 040 7116 Email: sales@dcslimited.co.uk www.DCSlimited.co.uk

PREVIEW Blum Go Live at W14 Blum will exhibit at the premier national event for furniture manufactures and joiners with a live stand that will demonstrate how to use and create furniture with Blum products using their jigs, machines and technical e-services. For once Blum will not be showing their actual products but rather demonstrating the depth of their technical support for fitted furniture at all levels. (However, Blum products can be seen on the stand of one of their main distributors Isaac Lord, which is close by in the Hall). The Blum stand will be split into two sections – one showing how to use their technology and tools for traditional wood framed and in-frame cabinets, and the other for manufacturers using metal drawers and pull-outs for contemporary layon doors. Blum’s Dynalog technical e-service system will be demonstrated on two large flat screens on the stand. Blum UK Sales and Marketing Director David Sanders says that being at W14 gives them the ideal opportunity to show customers how they work practically with wood. For the first time since they have exhibited in the UK Blum will be selling their tools and jigs from the stand with a discount for orders taken at W14.

Latham’s Latest Surface Solutions Win Favour with Joinery Sector Two of James Latham’s latest additions to their surfaces solutions portfolio – Mirror Gloss and Natural Touch – both part of the innovative and ‘on-trend’ Kronodesign range - are already generating massive interest from within the joinery and woodworking sector.

Mirror Gloss Mirror Gloss, which pushes the boundaries of depth and definition, colour and reflective gloss, is produced using first class particleboard and high quality melamine film, achieving a gloss level of 140 points for decorative use in the furniture industry and interior design. The new range comprises 20 highly durable, scratch resistant, light and colorfast decors that include 14 sparkling gloss colours, four wood grains and two fantasy decors. The perfect application for Mirror Gloss MFC is fine domestic spaces, home and office furnishings, kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms as well as luxury retailing and shop fitting.

Mirror Gloss is perfect for fine domestic spaces, home and office furnishings, kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms as well as luxury retailing and shops.

Natural Touch Another product from the Kronodesign range, Natural Touch is the first ‘embossed-in-register’ melamine board where the grain texture precisely matches the surface finish. Now, the authentic look and feel of real timber - the graining, the subtle variations of shade and tone - is accessible on almost any project. Natural Touch is pre-finished, extremely durable, easy to work with and offers consistency in both colour and grain. This means that architects, interior designers, contractors and furniture makers can now achieve an authentic rustic realism using melamine. With Natural Touch, the applications are almost limitless. It can be used for cladding walls, building furniture, creating fixtures as

well as making striking punctuations to spaces and surfaces and the versatility of this product has made it particularly popular within the shop fitting and hospitality sectors. Chris Sutton, managing director of James Latham commented, “The Kronodesign range represents one of Kronospan’s biggest investments in product research and development and it shows. This range is fantastic and the market has certainly responded. Mr Sutton added, “James Latham now offers one of the UK’s widest ranges of innovative surface solutions. RENOLIT’s 2014 Highlights Collection Launched A stunning selection Almost 60 new stock range additions together with 20 recent 2013 dÊcor introductions are now showcased in the 2014 RENOLIT Highlights Collection Binder. This year three main areas of focus are prominent. Oaks decors provide one focus with the trend towards rustic romance unchanged. Another is the cool elegance of high gloss surfaces, with a variety of solid colours, contemporary metallic prints. With the third the continued emergence for the delicate feel of satin, matt and supermatt surfaces.

Orleans Oak Orleans is a uniform oak with linear detail. As oak remains prevalent, this version will undoubtedly be popular. It features

a uniformly coloured vertical design with gentle cathedrals and pale wood stroke undertones which are emphasized by the structured Veralinga emboss. Available in two colour ways, mid-dark mushroombrown Oceanic A and lighter beige-grey of Oceanic B.

Matt Three levels of matt surfaces are now offered by RENOLIT; satin, supermatt and tactile suedette matt. Satin has a shimmering matt surface that conveys an unmistakable silky luster which simply entices you to touch it. Supermatt has a smooth surface while Suedette Matt has a velvety textured finish which unites a great combination of both aesthetics and performance.

New Product Launches Prompts David Clouting’s W14 Return David Clouting will exhibit at W14 to launch its latest innovative designs, aiming to build on its highly successful performance at W12. The exhibition is seen as the ideal opportunity to introduce its latest surface sheet materials and further build on the company’s reputation for cutting-edge design. The main focus of its W14 stand will be an array of new Decofoil stock decors. The four new F3 colours include Porcelain White WAR51, Alabaster YEM18, Mussel YEM16 and Cashmere NCAB4. All four endorse the latest trend for solid colours, recreating the painted wood effect to the company’s usual high standards. A further essential element is matching with existing product on the market to allow designers to maximise the impact in all areas. David Clouting’s new Decofoil colours are therefore aligned with existing MFC product for Alabaster, Mussel and Cashmere, while its Porcelain White is a specific match for Egger MFC. More good news for furniture manufacturers is that the F3 texture can be produced in both membrane pressing and wrapping and lamination grades, providing the option for five-piece doors to be used alongside vinyl-wrapped doors. David Clouting at W12 David Clouting customers have come to expect a wide range of services and so will not be surprised to hear there are more options available. In addition to its Decofoil stock range, the company can also meet made-to-order demand for manageable quantities of its lamination and wrapping grade. Further displaying the diversity available from the company’s association with LG Hausys, David Clouting will also display its excellent range of vinyl floor coverings. With wear and slip resistance qualities inherent throughout, these are suitable for use in a wide range of commercial and health care environments. Yet more choice will be available with a display of LG Hausys Interior Film and, as if all the above was not enough, the company plans to exhibit additional new Decofoils which are currently under development.

EGGER UK Launches New Room Visualisation App Laminate and wood panel manufacturer EGGER UK has launched a new app for tablets and smartphones that puts a virtual design studio in the palm of your hand. Building on the success of its PC application, it provides a revolutionary new way of being able to visualise how colours and decors will look as part of a room. Using high definition scans, designers can quickly create decor combinations in room settings ranging from shops, hotels and restaurants to kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. Available for iOS and Android operating systems, EGGER VDS features all of the decors in the company’s recently-extended ZOOM range – with 23 new decors and six new textures, as well as its laminate and cork+ flooring collections. With around 30 room sets available, users can quickly place decors onto the surfaces in the room. EGGER UK head of décor development Elliott Fairlie said: “Sometimes carrying a swatch or real samples isn’t practical – particularly given the size and breadth of our range following the new ZOOM introductions. “The free app gives quick and easy access to all 250+ of our finishes in a large scale. But as well as being a digital swatch you can place the decors onto doors, end panels, tables, shelves, in fact

most of the furniture and flooring in each room. There’s no patchwork quilt effect or graininess. “This very quickly enables designers to evaluate how a décor might look as a piece of finished furniture, helping to speed up the product development or specification process significantly. “The app also makes suggestions for the most effective colour combination with your chosen décor, whether that’s a complementary finish for the wall, furniture or flooring. “And once you’re finished you can save the room sets for future reference and perhaps send it to a colleague or client via e-mail.” As well as being available to use offline, the app complements Egger’s web-based VDS ONLINE site and VDS PROFI – a desktopbased programme that also allows the user to not only place décors onto furniture in various room-sets, but also to import their own room-set pictures and map the décors onto those. The EGGER VDS app is available from the Apple App Store or Google Play. It is compatible with Android v4 onwards, or Apple iOS 6 and above. Simply type in “VDS App” on your device. Innovation in Design at Decorative Panels Lamination Ltd Innovation in design is always at the forefront of Decorative Panels minds with continual development in the latest surface textures and finishes. Decorative Panels Group Design Director, Julian Tatham, reports on the companies exciting developments that are ready to sample into the market. “Working closely with our printing partners we have developed a wide range of 3D designs featuring the latest in textured surface development. The surface creates a premium look, with superb print quality but best of all it makes you want to reach out and touch it to achieve the full sensory experience. It is so authentic that this collection of designs not only looks like, but now also feels like the real thing – natural wood products. The range consists of nine designs offering a broad spectrum of tonal shades and surface textures, modern and on trend designs suitable for a wide range of markets. White woodgrain is a clean bright design, the surface texture creates intrinsic interest and adds character to the simplest of decors. Katthult is a furniture décor that epitomises the current trend for Scandinavian design. Bright, light and full of life with an abundant use of colour that can be appreciated to the full when viewed alongside natural tones. With gentle planking, an open and structured pore and small cut flowers which together create a remarkable overall appearance for our next design, Redgate. Redgate has a strong structure that is curiously calm and soft. Iconic Beech brings new life to this recently overlooked design. Full of life with a natural fine balance and of course superbly tactile. Nash Oak is a very different and special design, nothing like to ones we know. Correspondingly lively and natural, it has a mellow, warm & homely used look. Strong in expression with a distinctive structure, Nelson has a grey-whitish pore and a gold-bronze hue to the overtone, allowing infinite toning with trend colours. Bobs Pine brings the look of driftwood to the market, textured and sculptured by the elements, roughly honed using basic tools with masses of character. Maxim Rich is a real eye catcher. A mixture of elegant graining enhanced by the darker lines gives this design real substance and

presence reinforced by its power when used side by side with a single colour. Maxim Dark completes the full of palate of colours and surface textures. The 3D range that we now have available to sample opens opportunities in design like never before.” Julian goes on to expand on the latest uni-colour offering that Decorative Panels Lamination have ready to launch. “All woodgrains are now developed to be used with uni-colours, they must contrast, compliment, co-ordinate and create a harmonious combination. The use of uni-colours is evolving and is becoming enormously important within furniture and interior design. To this end we are continuously looking to update our range of unicolours, the latest products ready to launch from DPL are, Ruby Red, Electric Blue, Petrol Blue, Duck Egg Blue, Lime Wash, Shaded White, Virginia Grey, Moon Grey & Praline. Colours that compliment and work well with our stock unicolours such as Sand Beige, Dakar, Mussel, Cashmere and Alabaster plus of course many of the designs in our dp-décor and dp-specialist ranges.” Finally Julian talks about a ground breaking development in acrylic surfaces. “We have for many years sought to develop an alternative to traditional glass mirrors and now believe we have succeeded. This acrylic surface is bonded to MDF in exactly the same way as we process all other designs in our dpspecialist portfolio. An easy solution to the developing trend for mirrored plinths in kitchens and mirrored fronts in bedrooms. An added advantage is that this material won’t crack or shatter so is ideal for situations where safety is a priority. Why not take a look?” “Book a visit to our brand new Marketing Suite where these and many more innovative products are on permanent display – I am sure you will be amazed at what we have to offer.” “Keep looking out for the latest development, new designs are coming out all the time.”

Kronospan Introduces a New Pure Wood Texture Kronospan has expanded its textured surface range with the rollout of a new wood grain press plate to its manufacturing plants across the globe. Developed using Kronodesign’s latest commercial and trend intelligence, the new press plate gives designers the option of a replacement wood grain structure, with matte effect and muted lustre. The new textured surface is called Pure Wood and features in nine new decors launched to a global audience of interior, furniture, product, building and architectural designers and specifiers. Mark Bircham, Kronospan's product development manager, says: “The challenge was to carefully replicate nature while meeting the market’s desire for future design. With this in mind, we invested in a new wood grain surface texture to create an understated and elegant wood structure, which furniture and interior designers currently crave. “It’s a natural wood grain structure with a raw veneer look. There are no complicate cathedrals, knots or blooms, but simple narrow and slightly wider wood grain pores. It means the press plate structure can work beautifully across different timber types such as oak, walnut, elm and ash.” Pure Wood’s simple wood grain pattern and matte effect produced by the new surface texture complements the current interior Krono CON Pioneer establishing (FO1) trend for a sparse interior backdrop. The low-key wood texture also softens the bright furniture colours dominating the design shows and matches gentler tones like the popular greys, mochas and cappuccinos. Kronospan’s new surface texture is now being used as part of Kronodesign’s 2014 trend update, which includes 13 new decors that come with full design exclusivity unique to the trend collection. Each new surface decor has been independently researched and developed by the Kronodesign team based on market intelligence and a tireless global design journey for inspiration.

explains Schattdecor Design Head Claudia Küchen. At SICAM Schattdecor will be presenting its 2014/15 TREND AND DECOR GUIDE and a selection of decors that complement the three themes concerned. Browns 2000's Latest Laser Edge Bander On SCM Group's Stand at W14 Exhibition Peter Brown, owner of Browns 2000, the leading UK manufacturer and supplier of vinyl wrapped and Glacier doors, has just placed an order valued at ÂŁ1.65 million for a fully automatic CNC routing and nesting line and a Stefani LASER Edge Bander, both for the production of the very popular Glacier Door range. To celebrate the arrival of Brown's eighth Stefani Edge Bander, the new LASER machine will be exhibited on the SCM Group's stand (No. 7E570) at the forthcoming W14 Exhibition, 5 - 8th

October, at the NEC. It will be fully working, as if on production, using materials and edge banding supplied by Browns 2000. As well as the Laser application, the machine will also have the Stefani PUR 'Slimline' gluing system for dual edging, similar to a Stefani edge bander already on production at Browns 2000. A door return conveyor system will be supplied after W14 to Browns, due to space requirements on the stand, along with the LASER machine. The Glacier door is available in 12 colours, with more to come, using Acrylic

and PVC laminated in house to produce the perfect high gloss surface. It is then edged with matching Laser edging materials to create the appearance of a seamless join with the doors being nominally 19.5mm thickness. The latest SCM nesting line, 37 metres in length, consists of two Ergon twin-table CNC routing and nesting machines with a board store for 20 stacks of sheets. A DMC cleaning unit and a Stacker at the outfeed completes the line, which will be capable of nesting panels from a sheet at a rate of 280 sheets per 8 hour shift.

New Striebig 4D Saw Offers Full Optimization “With business showing a definite boost over the last six months and woodworkers now prepared to open their cheque books more readily, we are very optimistic about our upcoming appearance at W14,” says Matt Pearce, sales director of T.M. Machinery Sales. At Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre in October, T.M. will demonstrate the latest machines from the Swiss-made Striebig range of vertical panel saws and the Italian Viet range of artisan wide belt sanders. To be exhibited for the first time in the UK will be the remarkable new Striebig 4D machine. The 4D is a truly revolutionary development as it is the world’s first vertical panel saw to offer intelligent cut optimization, even for the most complicated panel and strip cutting work. It represents a quantum leap forward in saw technology, offering outstanding performance levels for the benefit of saw

users who want maximum efficiency. The 4D, which can optimize and cut a full panel without the operator needing to re-handle it once it is loaded, will be shown alongside existing popular models from the Striebig range. For the first time since being appointed as UK agents by Biesse, Viet’s parent company, T.M. will also be showing machines from the highly efficient and economical Viet artisan range of wide belt sanders. “Having the latest models on the stand will remind the trade just how superb these Viet sanders are,” says Matt Pearce. He adds: “Appearing at Britain’s leading woodworking equipment exhibition every

two years has become an important part of our overall marketing strategy. “We know from our experience at W12 that W14 will give us the opportunity to meet a large number of woodworkers who we would otherwise find it difficult to reach “With the new 4D on the stand plus other popular Striebig saws as well as the Viet sanders, we are expecting a hectic time.”

INSTALLATION Venjacob and Barberan at Fairline Boats When Fairline Boats decided to streamline their finishing departments they went to a number of companies for help and advice. One company ‘Miller Associates’ was able to offer a package which suited their requirements. With 40 years experience in the finishing sector, David Miller took technicians from Fairline to Spain and Germany to run trials on their products. David is always keen to explain that when developing a finishing process and designing a line this must always involve the customer, their lacquer supplier and the machinery suppliers. Fairline wanted a top quality finish which was durable and able to be achieved automatically and in volume. The first trials were run at Barberan’s trial rooms in Castelldefels in Spain, where Barberan have a fully equipped finishing laboratory staffed by specialist technicians who will work with the customer and lacquer supplier to create the desired finish. Fairline wanted to be able to create a clear matt finish on flat veneered panels as well as fill very deep grained Wenge veneer. A very short UV curing line was designed with an infeed conveyer; heavy duty filling machine; single lamp UV gel unit; Roller coater with special grooved roller and a final two lamp UV curing tunnel. The

The Venjacob line installed at Fairline Boats

combination of these machines enabled the desired finish to be achieved. The machine line is of a modular construction and can be extended at any time to give a higher volume and capacity. The second part of the finishing project was to achieve a high gloss clear pigmented finish on the flat interiors of Fairline Boats. David took the project team to Venjakob in Rheda- Wiedenbruk, Germany, who produce automatic spray machines and drying systems for the furniture and plastic industries. In the fully equipped trial room, the

Venjakob technicians worked closely with the lacquer chemists to enable Fairline to see how to achieve the finish they required and to prove the drying and curing process. This enabled a line specification which included panel cleaning; the latest Ven Perfect spray machine incorporating multiple pumps and spray circuits for the clear and pigmented lacquers. This system includes the latest fast colour change over allowing colour changes to be made in 60 seconds. The auto spray machine was followed by drying tunnels including flash off; jetted drying; TL low wattage UV lamps to allow the high gloss lacquers to flow out and beginning drying, followed by full power UV lamps for final cure. Both the Barberan and Venjacob lines were ordered and installed into a purpose built factory at Fairline’s Corby factory where they are in full production producing the finish on the interior components for the range of high quality Fairline Boats.

PROFILE

Ney Takes On Vitap Coventry-based Ney Ltd takes on the agency for Vitap, a company with a 60year pedigree. Sixty years of history lies behind the name Vitap. Founded shortly after the Second World War by two Italian engineers, Pietro Tanzini and Franco Viciani, the fledgling company began by making grinding machines. In1957 the first mechanical drill with one head emerged and this was quickly followed by other models. Soon, a multiheaded drill made its debut and tentative forays began into export markets. Today, with a solid reputation in CNC working centres, straight and contour edgebanders, nesting CNC machines and through-feed boring machines, Vitap exports its technology to over 80 countries spanning all seven continents. Vitap’s President, Franco Viciani is rightly proud of his company’s achievements: “Research and technology, our company know-how and experience are here to be shared with all our associates in

such a way as to give them concrete tools with which to fight the market, improve their sales and service, and maximize their success,” he says. Adds Area Manager, Giacomo Bertoni, “We're always pushing forward and evolving our products. With 6o years of experience behind us, not only do we offer a fantastic range of machines that is competitively priced, we also offer stability and assurance that our machines are designed to the highest standards.”

So what does Vitap offer British manufacturers? Gerd Ney, Managing Director of Vitap’s newly appointed UK distributor affirms, “Vitap is a leading European machinery manufacturer and thanks to its knowledge and expertise in designing and building drilling machines since 1954, its current range of machines offers the small businessman unparalleled results. “The introduction of Vitap's CNC

operated machines really is the icing on the cake. We are selling Vitap machines on a weekly basis and it is fast becoming one of our major product lines. Our customers like the fact that a Vitap is a simple machine to use and, whilst it comes in at a fraction of the price when compared with many CNC machines, it can achieve the same, if not better results than a more expensive model. “We originally worked with Vitap 20 years ago,” continues Gerd. “We recently revisited its range and soon realised that Vitap was creating machines that were incomparable with anything else on the market. Their build quality, overall efficiently and affordability certainly got our attention.” Through Ney Ltd, a wide range of Vitap machines will be available, starting with entry level machines like the 27T semi-automatic boring machine and concluding with the advanced N2 and N3 CNC nesting machines. The Vitap Eclipse, a semi-automatic Edgebander for small and large panels, is ideal for smaller furniture manufacturers and fits perfectly both with Ney’s aim to champion the cause of the smaller manufacturer and with other edgebanders currently offered by Ney Ltd. Also supplementing the Ney portfolio will be machines like the Bridge. Launched two years ago, it adds a new option in CNC point-to-point boring to Ney’s already expansive range. Other machines like the recently launched Point 3 CNC high-speed point-to-point boring machine, equipped with a new loading and unloading system, show just how accessible the latest technology is through Ney Ltd. Gerd Ney adds, “Having over 60 years of experience in the market has helped Vitap develop its designs and fine tune its product line. Vitap has certainly impressed us and we know it will impress others too.” The Vitap range will be on display for the first time at Ney’s open days from the 5th8th October.

mode where it switches to standby after being inactive for long periods – this reduces energy costs during break periods by up to 90%. Energy efficient motors also contribute to economic power consumption throughout the range. Models are equipped as standard with I-tools which deflect the chips away from the tool cutting edge and dispose of them at a pick-up rate of over 97%, even at low extraction speeds. The Isystem markedly improves not only process reliability, the working environment and productivity, but also reduces energy costs used for extraction. Extraction costs can be reduced by up to 20% with the valve control system which only switches extraction on for operational units. HOMAG’s I-tool system dramatically reduces the necessary dust extraction requirements compared to standard machines.

The HOMAG Edge The true benefits of investing in HOMAG equipment can be seen not only in the life-time cost advantages of the machinery, but also in being in partnership with the global leader in woodworking machinery. Tool Optimisation Seminars Shine a Light on Leitz Tooling Leitz Tooling held a series of Tool Optimisation Seminars and demonstrations its Harlow head office over the summer, including demonstrations of their tooling capabilities on a Holz-Her Dynestic 7516 CNC, kindly donated by Weinig UK for the occasion. The half-day sessions were attended mainly by panel processing companies and furniture production companies with commercial furniture and interior fit-out contracts. In the seminars, the Leitz team presented the latest in tool optimisation and innovation and discussed a wide range of production issues and tooling problems, including correct RPM, feed speeds and peripheral speeds. The most popular section of the seminars proved to be Leitz’s tips and advice sessions, which covered very specific issues for individual customers, to ideas for solutions for much more common problems experienced by most manufacturers. Increasing noise, or heat caused by friction, were identified as possible warning signs which in many cases could be resolved by correct tooling and balance, and which has an immediate impact on improved accuracy and productivity. Leitz Tooling sales manager Brian Maddox also made an appeal for companies to measure their current tooling

performance, such as to number of cuts, pieces produced, items per day, so they have a benchmark for future comparison. Mark Gunn, senior manufacturing engineer at powered adjustable chair and bed manufacturer Furmanac Ltd. said the seminars changed the way people thought about tooling. “It became clear that there are things we can easily do which will have a positive effect on tool life and our productivity. This was a really worthwhile seminar.” Full service contractors Vascroft Contractors Ltd. believe in investing in quality tooling and as a Leitz customer, already experience the benefits of Leitz’s tools first hand. “We’ve realised that we’re using our CNCs at a fraction of their potential and today was another step towards addressing this. The combination of seeing Leitz tooling on the CNC and the briefing from Holz-Her gave us food for thought, as well as reassurance than our systematic approach to tooling with Leitz is the right way forward.” Leitz’s sales manager Brian Maddox said, “These Tool Optimisation Seminars are a great opportunity for companies to see what’s possible, to find out what a tool can really do, and even how to reduce the number of processes, making for more efficient and profitable businesses for our

Ridgeway Furniture Install 4 SCM Machines Ridgeway Furniture are a carpentry based manufacturing business located in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, formed in 1988 as a bespoke joinery manufacturer, making stairs, hotel furniture and kitchens. During the 1990's, as the golf and leisure industries grew, the company begun to specialise in changing room furniture. Ridgeway design, manufacture, install and maintain changing room furniture crafted from solid wood and veneer, and have an excellent knowledge of wood- based manufacturing. Having recently increased factory space to expand production, Ridgeway's Managing Director, Mark Cutler, identified the need for new manufacturing processes and machinery, so he contacted Roger Gabb at SCM Group UK, who had supplied a K500 Edge Bander 7 years previously. To date, Ridgeway has utilised the traditional 'screw and dowel' method of cabinet construction. Using a small drilling machine, with the increase in production, it soon became evident a faster machine with minimum setting up time was required. SCM's Cyflex F900 PRO BR was demonstrated in SCM's showroom, and after an impressive demo an order was placed.

SCM Hot Press at Ridgeway Furniture

Ridgeway's Operations Manager, Dave Watson, comments "Almost every panel in our cabinets requires some type of drilling or routering, so we thought the Cyflex, which takes up very little floor space, was the ideal machine, in preference to a large CNC machining centre. As the Cyflex can now additionally have a routing electrospindle as well as the standard grooving

saw, the specification met our requirements." The Cyflex bakelite worktable offers zero set-up time, designed to assist the operator and avoid any setting up procedures. The table allows space for all vertical and horizontal drilling spindles and the grooving saw blade to pass through to machine each panel whatever the positions of the holes and grooves. An automatic side aligning device with the "TP" detecting system for calibrating the opposite panel side reference, securely holds the panels even with the most difficult situations. The F18 drilling unit, with 12 vertical and 6 horizontal independent spindles (4 along the 'X' axis and 2 along the 'Y' axis) and an integrated grooving blade along the 'X' axis provides the machining of the panels together with the 5.5KW, 18000rpm vertical routing spindle and ISO 30 rapid tool changeover. Maximum 'X - Y' axis speed is 40metres/min. SCM Group's high powered Xilog programming system is very easy to use and is the same as fitted to SCM's machining centres. Auto centralised lubrication is included. Maximum

INSTALLATION workpiece dimensions are 3050 x 900 x 60mm, minimum 200 x 70 x 10mm. Dave Watson continues "We were so impressed with the Cyflex, within 4 weeks, we decided to purchase a second machine so we could operate the 2 Cyflex's in tandem. Programming the machines is done on the easy-to-use on-board computer or in the office and simply transferred by a memory stick." At the same time, Ridgeway's edge banding requirements were reviewed, so a more up to date machine was considered, and a machine in SCM's Nottingham showroom was demonstrated and immediately ordered. The model S1000 TERL, which has a very high specification, including the 'I-Touch' Computer, and numerous electronic setting devices including the top pressure beam (together with all the top mounted units) and the positioning of the pressure rollers. Operating at a variable feed speed of 10 22 metres/minute, a panel spacer at the infeed ensures the best feed rate of the panels is obtained. An Anti-Adhesive Unit is followed by an RT-E Panel Edge Trimming Unit fitted with diamond cutters to give a perfect panel edge for gluing and removing any imperfections since the panels were cut. A Gluing Unit with a hot melt pre-melting hopper feed unit ensures continuous glue flow even when processing long panels continuously. An End Trimming Unit is followed by an

Drilling, Routing & Grooving saw on Cyflex machine at Ridgeway Furniture

'RSP' In-Line Top and Bottom Trimming Unit and then an 'RI/S' Top and Bottom Tiltable Edge Trimming Unit with a 2position pneumatic kit for fast adjustment of the cutters for different edge trimming; straight, radiused or chamfered. A Corner Rounding Unit is followed by Edge Scraping and an Oscillating Buffing Unit. Dave Watson comments "The S1000 is the latest edge bander and as expected is very easy to program and set up between jobs. Being longer than our old SCM machine, it is much easier to gain access to

the operating units and make any necessary adjustments and to change cutters. We apply mostly 2mm thick PVC and the finish on our panels is superb." As Ridgeway had previously sent their laminating to an outside supplier, it was decided to bring the operation in-house to give maximum flexibility and offer shorter delivery times, so an SCM press was ordered, the model GS 6/90 30-13. With a 3300 x 1300mm capacity and heated platens with a 15KW Oil Boiler to heat them, applying laminate to chipboard, MDF or other substrates is quickly carried out. Dave Watson concludes "We are currently very busy supplying our lockers to fitness centres and golf clubs, as well as furniture to hotels, so the acquisition of the new SCM machines has been of considerable benefit to our business. Training by SCM has been excellent and we look forward to many years of good service from the CNC Drills, Edge Bander and Press."

HOMAG UK Stores Up Profit for the Chilfen Group Formed in 1960, Chilfen’s roots were established in the specialist industrial packaging market making softwood and plywood bespoke packaging solutions for the engineering and manufacturing industry. Since those early days, the business has experienced consistent growth and now encompasses three divisions – Joinery, Contracting and Export Packaging – with a joint annual turnover in excess of £6m. In the last couple of years, the Group has achieved significant success in the commercial and retail sectors working directly with blue chip high street retailers plus several high end interior fit out contractors. One of the cornerstones of the Group’s manufacturing processes is the cutting of stock. “Both the Export Packaging and Joinery companies rely on material being accurately cut to size as and when required,” explains Chilfen’s joint managing director, Russell Childs. He continues, “Historically, we had five employees undertaking this operation processing for both the Export Packaging and Joinery businesses. “This was done autonomously for each

company, making it not only labour intensive, but also inefficient as a production process. In addition, it was a difficult system to control and greatly slowed down the entire manufacturing procedures for both businesses.”

Looking for an efficient solution “Our old saw, purchased around 13 years ago, was tired and we were concerned that the operating software was ‘outdated’. This nervousness was the catalyst for us to evaluate our entire cutting operation. Our key goals were to find a system that would automate the loading of the saw and give us far more control over the manufacturing processes of the Export Packaging and Joinery businesses. “Ideally, we wanted to stay loyal to either the Italian or German brand equipment that already existed in the business. From our initial market research it soon became clear that, for this complex system, we were more comfortable with the reliable, advanced German engineering.”

A visit to HOMAG UK and its German parent company “The cutting process being such an important element of our manufacturing

operation, we knew we had to take our time to get the right solution for our business. We began discussions with HOMAG UK and were immediately impressed by their helpful approach. They got to grips with our unique production requirements extremely quickly, giving us lots of hints and tips to help us achieve the exact specification for our needs. “Seeing is believing, as they say, and so HOMAG UK arranged a visit for us to go up to S W Watson in Preston who had installed a very similar solution with a HOLZMA beam saw and BARGSTEDT storage system. The visit confirmed to us that this was the way to go, but we wanted to be absolutely certain and so HOMAG UK also arranged for us to travel out to Germany to see several ‘Store ‘n Saw’ installations and visit the HOLZMA and BARGSTEDT manufacturing plants. “The whole specifying and buying process took three to four months. Roger Wilks, the HOMAG UK sales consultant, was excellent throughout and never once did he try to over-sell us, despite the fact that we were constantly adjusting the specification to get exactly what we wanted.”

Delivery on the dot

Store n Saw – the HOLZMA HPP 300 is automatically fed by the BARGSTEDT storage system

56 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014

“As you’d expect from such a professional German operation, the delivery and installation process went like clockwork. A meeting was scheduled four weeks prior to delivery when they gave us very specific start and completion dates. True to their word, the equipment and engineers arrived at 8am on the specified Friday and the installation was completed plumb on schedule. “Throughout the installation, HOMAG were always on hand to provide guidance and help so we could get back up and running as quickly as possible. Clearly, with an installation like ours, it wasn’t going to be the work of a moment, but thanks to HOMAG and Chilfen senior staff’s meticulous planning it couldn’t have gone any better.”

INSTALLATION

BARGSTEDT storage system – automated stock control and retrieval at Chiltern Joinery

Getting up to speed “To ensure we were able to get the best out of the system HOMAG had arranged comprehensive training. Two of our team went to Castle Donington for training on the Cut Rite software that controls the HOLZMA saw. Cut Rite is a much more flexible system than our old software and it required very little adaptation to integrate into our systems. “For the detailed BARGSTEDT training, two operators went over to their facility in Germany and this proved to be vitally important in preparing us for the step change the system would bring to our business. “Final training was done by HOMAG engineers on site during the installation process. Naturally, a complex project like this needs time to become fully integrated and productive within a manufacturing process, but the results we have achieved since its installation have been outstanding.”

Total control with supreme efficiency “We now have total control over the cutting process in our manufacturing cycles. Work is cut for both the Export Packaging and Joinery companies using just two operators rather than the five

previously required. That gives us a saving of up to 120 hours per week alone which is pretty incredible. “More importantly, perhaps, the automated stock control system means we know exactly what stock we have at any given moment. This enables us to control the work flow for both businesses accurately and efficiently. From our customers point of view this translates to us being able to consistently deliver product at precisely the right time and to the high quality they have come to expect from us.”

Reliable product. Friendly service “In our business we can’t afford downtime, our customers are very demanding and rightly so. With the HOLZMA saw and BARGSTEDT storage system we can rest easy because, like all HOMAG products, they are totally reliable. It really is German engineering at its best, complimented by great UK manufacturing attitudes. “For total peace of mind, the system is linked via the internet to Germany, so that any occasional incidents that might occur can be quickly sorted. I have to say though, that we’ve never had any major issues. So, whilst servicing is minimal, we have taken out a 12 month service plan which gives us

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

total confidence about the machine going forward. “Coincidentally, the five months since the ‘Store ‘n Saw’ system was installed have been our busiest ever. There is no way we could have coped with the volume of business going through our factories without this outstanding system. It really has changed the way our business is run and it is delivering outstanding financial returns just as we were told it would. “From Roger Wilks on the sales side to the technical servicing team, the people at HOMAG are professional but very friendly, open and honest. They provide exactly what you want from a trusted supplier and they have given us the total confidence that the HOMAG Group is the partner with whom we want to drive our business forward in the future,” concludes Russell Childs.

New Showroom and Training Facility for AMS in Leicester Leicester based Advanced Machinery Services (AMS) will be opening a 10,000sq. ft. purpose built showroom and training facility at its Skeffington Mill site later this year. The new low carbon footprint building will house up to 18 new and refurbished machines in the showroom, all powered up and fully operational with extraction. The facility will also house a retail shop for both the trade and hobbyist to purchase machines and ancillaries. “Our business has seen tremendous growth over the last few years and this new showroom, training and retail facility is a major investment in our future,” claims Steve McGloin, a director at AMS. He continues, “We recognise the demands of the market are changing all the time. Customers want a choice; some can’t afford the level of investment required to buy new equipment, but they need a machine and so buying a refurbished model with a 12 month warranty is very attractive to them. “Our new showroom and training facility will reflect this need, with both new and refurbished equipment on display. Also, from our point of view, having money tied up in stock is expensive; consequently, we want to fully utilise the showroom machinery by using it for training purposes as well.”

Cementing the relationship with specialist training company DIDAC For the training, AMS is extending its association with training company Didac. By delivering quality training that is secondto-none, Bristol based Didac has established a reputation as the premier training company in the furniture manufacturing and woodworking industries. They manage and run the health and safety at the industry’s W14 exhibition and are heavily involved working with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). Over the last three or four years AMS has

58 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014

developed close ties with Jon Gibson and Martin James, the founders of Didac. “Jon and Martin are well respected in the industry,” confirms McGloin, “our companies share similar philosophies, so it was a perfect fit for us to develop a partnership with Jon, Martin and their team.”

A comprehensive range of training and consultancy services “In the early days, we offered training services to CNC machine users,” explains Jon Gibson, managing director of Didac. He continues, “Since then we have expanded our offer to include a wide range of training and consultancy services, When the opportunity arose to become part of this exciting new venture with AMS, we jumped at the chance. “AMS is centrally located in the UK and therefore ideally sited in terms of it being a convenient place for companies in the midlands and the north to send staff for training. At the AMS Skeffington Mill site we will replicate similar training packages as to those we offer in Bristol. “Our two Nottingham based trainers will deliver courses out of the AMS building. Initially we will be offering courses to those already in work that need up-skilling or refresher training and also, via our National

Funding Contract, training those people who are unemployed and looking to gain qualifications to move into the industry. “For AMS and Didac, this relationship will strengthen both parties’ already strong reputations. For Didac, it allows us to have an impact on the midlands and north of the country, whilst for AMS if offers another string to its bow and makes maximum use of the new facility. “Finally, it is good for the industry as a whole, something which is very important to both AMS and Didac. We will be running courses that vary in length from one day to six or twelve months and in the future will be looking at ways to work with the schools in the area to train up teachers,” concludes Gibson. To help promote the training courses run through the new Leicester facility, there will be a member of Didac’s team on the AMS stand (No. 8C335) at W14, 5th – 8th October 2014 NEC Birmingham.

CASE STUDY

Cabinet Vision Takes Pain Out of Creating Dental Cabinets The UK pioneer in creating ergonomic dental cabinets halved its surgery design time and material wastage by switching to Cabinet Vision software. Paterson Health Group was the first company in the UK to design bespoke ergonomic cabinets for dentists, who historically used ordinary cabinets and sideboards. The new system wrapped around the dentist’s position at the head of the patient’s chair, ensuring both dentist and nurse could easily reach everything they needed. Managing Director Stuart Paterson says that 35 years on from setting that trend for dentists, it remains the core of their business, although they now also create doctors’ surgeries, medical centres and speciality clinics. Operating out of 22,000 square foot premises in Gloucestershire with 24 employees, they use Cabinet Vision for designing and manufacturing all orders, mainly from MDF – including melamine for carcases, and MDF core with high pressure laminate for fronts – along with solid acrylic and some Corian. “Because

Cabinets and drawers designed by Paterson Health Group utilising Cabinet Vision software

many dental surgeries are converted houses with unusual-shaped rooms, our standard product range is just the starting point. We need to tailor every cabinet to the customer’s individual needs, and Cabinet Vision does that extremely quickly and accurately.”

After surveying the site and taking measurements they drag and drop each cabinet from the standard catalogue into Cabinet Vision, then customise it to meet specific requirements. “Sometimes it’s just a case of altering widths and heights, but often includes a particular combination of drawers and frontages. Within a minute we can change cabinets from a cupboard to a five-drawer bank. Even splitting drawers and keeping them within the right settings is child’s play for Cabinet Vision. “When we shrink or expand one aspect, its parametric capability automatically changes everything else, so we don’t have to worry about moving lock holes, handles and hinges. We know they’ll be right, and the software also highlights overlaps and collision points. It saves us so much time.” The customer then receives a 3D rendering which includes the dental chair so the dentist gets a proper feel for the room. “And thanks to Cabinet Vision we can also invite them to our showroom for a demonstration ‘walk-through’ of their surgery, spinning the image so they can see it from every angle. It even shows them

how the light coming into the room will affect their main working area.” Stuart Paterson says they design a full surgery in around three hours, which used to take all day before they invested in Cabinet Vision. And using the integrated S2M Center to send the NC code directly to their Anderson Selexx CNC router reduces material wastage by around half. “S2M is an extremely powerful tool. We go from the design screen to Screen-To-Machine which automatically creates the toolpaths, optimising material usage.” Previously their offcuts were often the size of half a shelf, while he describes them now as thin strings of waste. And this saving is fed back to the customer in lower prices. Before investing in the Andi and Cabinet Vision four years ago, it took more staff three days longer to make a full surgery than it does now. “Someone spent a day writing out a cutting list from the design, then every panel had to be cut from a board, oversized. We had an early CNC pod which we coded at the machine and then we machined everything panel by panel. Now everything’s done in just one pass, and

saves us two and a half operatives in the factory.” Cabinet Vision also plays its part in helping Paterson Health Group win contracts in the first place. With every job being completely bespoke, they make extensive use of the built-in Bid Centre to produce accurate costings, enabling them to give the customer the best possible price. “It’s a price-driven market at the moment, and as we sell directly to the end-user we design, manufacture and install, so we need to be highly competitive. As we’re never quoting from standard catalogue items the fact that Cabinet Vision tells us exactly how much board we need for the carcases and fronts, and how many hinges, runners and handles we’ll need, along with putting on the mark-up, which we control, is absolutely vital. It pulls all those things together and produces a quote form which we export to Microsoft Word and send to the customer.” He describes every stage of Cabinet Vision as being a “one-button-press,” from the Bid Centre to obtain the quote, generating the cutting list from the design, and sending NC code to the Andi.

As well as dental practices across the UK they also supply the Ministry of Defence, having installed bespoke dental and medical surgeries at military bases in the Falkland Islands, Afghanistan, Belize, Brunei and throughout Europe. Operating in a tightly controlled niche market, Paterson Health Group fully understands about cross-infection, specific waste layouts, how to adequately house specialised equipment, and the different heights required between the dentists’ cabinets and those used by the nurses. “There’s a world of difference between producing cabinets for this industry and the kitchen trade,” says Stuart Paterson. “But Cabinet Vision lets us translate our 35 years experience into producing exactly what the dentists need quickly, easily and accurately.”

SOFTWARE

HOMAG Group Software – Making the impossible, possible If you talk to HOMAG customers, it soon becomes abundantly clear that one of the many advantages of dealing with the HOMAG Group is its leading edge software. Over the years, the HOMAG name has become synonymous with innovative technology and precision quality machinery. The company recognised very early in its development that in order for customers to achieve optimum results from its equipment, HOMAG had to develop simple to operate, reliable software. So, to make the impossible, possible, they have created a variety of top of the range software programmes that enable customers to have complete control over their manufacturing processes. A prime example of this can be seen at Bluespot Furniture. Bluespot operations director, Dr Andrew Cooper, explains, “Our entire manufacturing system has been built around HOMAG Group equipment because it is the most reliable and technically advanced on the market.

“When moving to our new premises we undertook a comprehensive evaluation of equipment and systems that would help us achieve our goals and it soon became clear that integrated control software would be a pivotal factor in our decision making.”

woodWOP – Take control of your CNC programming system Perhaps the best known and respected HOMAG software is woodWOP. Since its launch in 1992, woodWOP has set the standard in CNC software. Luke Briggs, CNC production manager for Silverlining Furniture is a fan: “The HOMAG Venture 316 5-axis CNC processing centre is the first HOMAG CNC I’ve run and despite the high tech specification, it is so reliable; you press the go button and it just churns through the work producing outstanding quality results, time after time. “Table legs that previously took two or three days to craft by hand are completed and ready for the next process in less than two hours; it’s just amazing and so easy to use. The

woodWOP software that controls the Venture 316 is totally user-friendly. I went on a four day training course at HOMAG UK’s Castle Donington headquarters and came away bubbling with enthusiasm about the capabilities of the package.” With its latest edition, woodWOP 7, the HOMAG Group has redefined the boundaries of 5-axis programming. The new 3D version offers a whole new approach. Whilst in previous router programming methods contour lines were used, now customers are able to select a surface and allow the software to automatically calculate the paths present. The functions of CAD/CAM which are directly integrated in woodWOP, provide impressive operating simplicity and easy familiarisation for its operator: 3D roughing, 3D finishing, 3D peripheral routing and 2D curve routing. To help existing woodWOP customers HOMAG has set up a dedicated forum where operators can get advice or support from other users of the software.

The latest edition of woodWOP software is available in 3D

Optimisation with eSOLUTION CAD|CAM This furniture design software optimises the production process at the initial design stage, right through to completion of the product. It is specifically configured to create efficient order processing and instant integration to production machinery. With its modular design, customers need only purchase the modules relevant to their business, making it an extremely cost effective solution that gives furniture manufacturers a real edge. eSOLUTION delivers parametric furniture design in 3D and provides a direct link to the machine technology. Immediately following the design process, production drawings and bills of material can be created at the click of a mouse with design data automatically forwarded to HOMAG machinery. This means they are directly actuated with all the necessary parameters such as tool selection, drilling pattern, speed feed rate or approach strategy. Regardless of whether you are working with dimensionally variable carcass furniture or complex furnishing items, such as counters, bars or reception desks,

assemblies are generated in 3D complete with all their connections, processing operations and hardware. At the same time, woodCAD|CAM creates drawings in a two or threedimensional view, including all crosssections and details for easy communication with architects and developers. The system encompasses an integrated order and project management capability. This means planning and design data is calculated directly with material and production costs which can be read out in various forms, such as a manufacturing cost calculation or a quotation template. Not only is this software the modern way to produce furniture, it is also the only way forward if you want to remain competitive in the ever changing marketplace.

woodNest Professional – Software for nesting shaped parts Developed to make nesting easy, it is used to take woodWOP programmes and optimise them into full-sized sheets so that the user can get the best yield from their materials and, therefore, achieve maximum efficiency.

See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com

“This software gets the most out of materials and time,” explains Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director at HOMAG UK. “It optimises cutting and machining in one programme. woodWOP programs are imported directly, placed on an unprocessed panel and optimised to reduce material costs and shorten the total processing time. “In designing and developing software, the HOMAG Group has always focused on three key areas: ease of use, productivity and profit improvement. The woodWOP, eSolution and woodNest software packages take performance to a new level of professionalism giving customers the opportunity to improve the control and efficiency of their operation,” concludes Simon.

Using Technology to Make More Profit Technology isn’t just about replacing process for the sake of it, it can help increase profitability. Take quotations for example. One of the common problems tradespeople have, including joinery companies, is the time it takes to produce a quotation. A forgotten quote is more than just lost work, it can hurt the reputation of your business. There’s software that lets you create good looking quotes whilst on

the move; what’s better they can be sent directly to your customer via email or text, thus cutting costs, plus you retain a central record. “One of the by-products of using the software has been a significant cost saving of about £5,000 a year in print and postage.”

Work together, even while apart Another good use of technology is for managing busy, dispersed teams where collaboration is essential. Especially important when everyone is working on different projects and/or locations, there are some useful tools available for mobile devices that enable the boss to track activity and keep the lines of communications short.

PROFILE AXYZ Routers on Song at Craft Wales Supplementing the earlier purchase of an AXYZ 4000 Series CNC router, Caerphilly, South Wales-based Craft Wales has now installed a larger AXYZ 4008 machine to further expand its production capabilities. Established in 2006 by husband and wife co-directors Paul and Helen Hogg, the company specialises in the manufacture of bespoke timber products. These are designed primarily for the education market but also include products such as robust timber benches and traditional oak signs that are a popular choice with country parks and rural areas in view of their aesthetic appearance and environmental sensitivity. Paul Hogg explained: “The original machine purchased from AXYZ International enabled us to increase and enhance the range of products we supply to the school environment that now feature detailed logos and personalised designs. The router was used initially to process plywood and MDF but with the addition of the larger 4008 machine fitted with an AXYZ ATC (Automatic Tool Change) facility we are now using PLAYTECH, a German plastic product that will enable us not only to add more detail and colour to the products manufactured for the school environment but also allow diversification into new markets such as tourism and craft skills.” The AXYZ 4000 Series routers now installed at Craft Wales are the most popular in the AXYZ International portfolio for industrial woodworking, furniture production, joinery and panel processing applications. The latest 4008 machine has a processing area of 2,440mm (length) by 1,466mm (width). It can be supplied with a host of both standard and optional performance-enhancing features, including a recently expanded (up to 33-station) automatic tool change facility that provides both automatic and manual tool change options. In addition to the expanded ATC facility, a number of new or recently introduced machine upgrades are now available to AXYZ router owners, the most notable of which is the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility. This ensures that the material being processed

68 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014

The AXYZ 4008 CNC router in operation at Craft Wales

is always held securely throughout the routing/cutting process to provide optimum accuracy and a superior cut finish. In addition to greatly improving material hold-down efficiency, the facility also helps minimise material wastage and machine downtime caused by incorrectly set vacuum valves. Other machine enhancements introduced by AXYZ International include the latest A2MC machine control system that eliminates problems caused by sudden acceleration or deceleration often found with other control systems. Integrated with the A2MC system, the latest AVS (AXYZ Vision System) enhances machining accuracy as well as offering compatibility with all of the cutting tools used on AXYZ routers. A further optional machine upgrade is the latest helical rack and pinion drive system that greatly reduces wear via the system’s multiple gear teeth configuration. This ensures a more even distribution of the workload, resulting in increased feed rates, greater accuracy of cut, quieter operation and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. A project involving the use of an AXYZ router and one of which Craft Wales is especially proud is the Play Train produced for the school environment. As Paul Hogg explained, “The router has been invaluable

in honing the design and customising the various sections that make up the engine and carriages. Schools are now able to choose between faces or school logos and badges. The train was originally manufactured from plywood and painted by hand which proved a time-consuming process. We can now use a combination of the self-coloured plastic material and the AXYZ router with its ATC facility to manufacture the product faster and without the need for a paint finish.” On the service provided by AXYZ International, Paul Hogg was fulsome in his praise. He concluded: “Craft Wales found AXYZ International to be a highly professional company with which to deal. The engineer who supervised the installation of the second router was extremely knowledgeable and helpful, instilling complete confidence in our staff during the training period and providing ongoing technical support whenever this is required.”

WOODWASTE Enhanced tax relief scheme now available on biomass boilers There’s never been a better time to invest in one of the revolutionary new automated biomass water boilers from Wood Waste Technology, as this type of heating has recently been added to the approved equipment list for the Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA) scheme. The ECA Scheme is part of the Government’s programme to encourage companies to buy energy efficient equipment and manage climate change. It provides businesses with enhanced tax relief for any equipment purchases that meet published energy-saving criteria. As the Wood Waste Technology WW199 boiler gained an efficiency rating of 92.4%, businesses could be able to claim a 100% first year capital allowance on this purchase

against the taxable profits of the period of investment. Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology says, “The ECA scheme could be a great way for a business to improve its cash flow through accelerated tax relief. For example, it might allow a business to write off the whole cost of a biomass boiler against taxable profits in the year of purchase, as opposed to writing down the plant over 5 years, potentially lowering the amount of tax owed in that year compared to what would be due under the general capital allowance rules. “ More and more businesses are starting to realise the financial benefits of investing in biomass technology, due to the huge savings that can be made on waste disposal and heating costs, so it’s no surprise that

sales of Wood Waste Technology’s new automated water boilers are going strong. Offering a high quality, easy to use system at a competitive price, with three different heating solutions (space heating to factory areas, traditional radiator heating for offices and domestic hot water), the boiler is opening up the market for smaller companies, as well as larger corporations, to benefit from renewable energy hot water solutions.

DUST EXTRACTION Dustraction Helps Retail House Solutions Increase Manufacturing Efficiency and Address New Markets Shop fitting and retail displays is a fastmoving environment in which shopfitters react quickly to the needs of their high visibility brand clients whose timber or panel-based displays can generate massive lifts in sales overnight. Production Manager Luke Dakin says: “Design is also in the mix, of course, combining the best graphics with wood and panel based displays manufactured to high standards and to very tight schedule deadlines for big brand customers. We need a clean and functional shop floor to address that.” Retail House in-store displays, with fully supported overhead canopies and large light boxes, for example, can boost sales by 100% on prime retail sites overnight for client brands like Yves St. Laurent, L’Oreal, Guerlain, Givenchy, Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior. Skincare, colour, fragrance and consultation sites for prime names like these demand manufacture and fit-out to tight production deadlines when department floors will be re-open for trading at 9.30am next morning. It’s exciting stuff, says Luke: “We have to make here, often overnight, and then pack, shift and fit-out top quality panel-based displays overnight and with no suggestion of hold-up. Now we are also breaking into new fields with clients like BareMinerals, for whose skin-care and colouration retailers we are working with modern sheet materials like black glossed wood-based panels, printed acrylics and even painted glass or stainless steel sheet plus Corian patterns and colours. And now Retail House has a cohesive shop floor production layout of their own featuring state-of-the-art CNC by Biesse plus also edgebanding, overhead routing, vertical spindle moulding, planer thicknessing plus table saw sizing precision. “The plan is to extend manufacturing capacity to the many other organisations in the industrial midlands area with similar production needs to our own. We have a good layout here in Croft, designing with real timber finishes and combining light pad and LED illumination, stainless steel sheet and Corian solid surface work tops. Dust extraction has become a very significant part of the manufacturing mix at

Limited footprint of steel gantry-mounted filter at Radio House Solutions as well now as low noise output from Dustraction’s fan-sets.

Retail House Solutions in an environment that has to be as clean, tidy and efficient, and as creative as every other part of the shop floor. Dustraction’s Dustrax No 27 modular filter has a cloth area of nearly 2,000 sq ft and gives a filtration velcocity of 5.2 fpm. Each section of the modular woodwaste filter carries multiple tubular cotton fabric filters with more than 100 of them in total, all powered by a 37kW TEFC-wound unidirectional electric motor. Heavier waste particles are dropped by the system into a hopper while fine dust is collected by the fabric filters; two automatic shakers maintain the sock-type filters clear of wood dust and in perfect working order. All wood dust and waste generated by Retail House leaves the factory via heavy-weight rotary valve and airseal with resilient rubbertipped fan blades that prevent blockages,

avoid fan damage and are also now low noise. The filter is fitted with explosion relief panels in full accordance with the latest ATEX requirements. “All of our wood waste collection and disposal systems are fully COSHH compliant,” says Dustraction’s Steve Matuska. “We take our role in keeping production machinery clean and clear of working dust very seriously; everything we do is in full compliance with the latest regulations of the Health & Safety Executive whose working regulations we monitor at all times and to whose conditions we always react immediately.”
