NEWS BA Clic Components Secure Funding For 40 Jobs In Rotherham Operating from a newly refurbished 52,000 sq ft factory at Barbados Way, Hellaby in Rotherham, from a total start up funding of over £3m, new company BA Clic Components have just secured £440,000 of funding from the Sheffield City Region (SCR) Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP). The LEP funding is designed to enable BA Clic Components to bring 40 new jobs to the local area and keep this innovative production process in UK and more specifically Rotherham. The BA Clic Components factory will be manufacturing ClicBox, which is a revolutionary product that makes cabinet assembly easier than ever before. It doesn’t
require any tools, fittings or glue; you literally just click the different components together to make an even stronger than traditional carcass in seconds. This is great news for the local economy as the new Northern Powerhouse minister Andrew Percy recently visited the BA Clic factory and told us “This government remains committed to rebalancing the economy through creating a Northern Powerhouse, by devolving power to those on the ground and giving them the tools to get on with the job." David Caulfield BA Clic's Sales & Marketing Director added, "We are delighted to continue expansion in the South Yorkshire region where we have already established
business with another business within the group, employing over 150 people in Doncaster. Our experience of the skill set and work ethic of the people of this region convinced us of the prudence of setting up a further operation here in Rotherham. We are convinced this can create real job opportunity and continued economic growth in and around this area."

PROFILE Blum Celebrate Solid Increase In Revenue Blum reports revenue increase of 6.5 % in the financial year 2015/2016. Yet another year of growth for the Austrian fittings manufacturer. Thanks to innovative products, an international market presence, consistent investments worldwide and highly flexible employees, the Blum Group has once again seen a revenue increase during the financial year 2015/2016, despite very different performances by the individual markets. The family enterprise reports an increase of 6.5 % compared to the previous year. With a revenue increase of 6.5 % to ¤ 1,656.17 mill. fittings manufacturer Blum concludes its financial year 2015/2016 that ended on 30 June. Innovative products, its international market presence and consistent investments all mean that the family enterprise headquartered in Höchst (Austria) can celebrate a solid increase in revenue. 50% of the company turnover was generated within the EU; 15% in the US.
Diverging developments on different markets In Western Europe, all markets developed in a positive manner for Blum in the financial year 2015/2016. In Eastern Europe, the fittings manufacturer is also pleased with the way business has developed in the EU member states. In Russia and in Turkey, on the other hand, revenue has decreased drastically due to economic sanctions and political instability. Business in North America continued to flourish, while the tense economic situation made itself felt very strongly in South America, particularly in Brazil. In the AsiaPacific region, most markets continued to grow, and Blum also registered growth
figures in the Middle East and in Africa.
Employees – the basis of success "The high level of motivation of our worldwide team and the excellent cooperation of all departments and organisations within our group are an essential building block of our success", says CEO Gerhard E. Blum, summing up the fundamental importance that Blum attaches to its employees. During the past financial year, Blum had on average 6,849 employees worldwide, an increase of 334 compared to the previous year. On 1 September 2016, 80 new apprentices will start their technical training at Blum Austria. This means that from September 2016, the Blum Group will employ 306 apprentices, 13 of whom are based in the US.
Investments during the financial year 2015/2016 During the past financial year, the Blum Group has invested a total of ¤ 173.64 mill. At the Austrian site, a three-storey manufacturing building and a fully automated high-bay warehouse at plant 4 in Bregenz will commence operation in September. An additional high-bay warehouse is currently under construction and is scheduled to be completed by spring 2017. Construction work for a new, 8th plant in Dornbirn has already commenced. The plan is for a stamping centre with a high-bay and strip steel warehouse to be operational by summer 2018. In March 2016, Blum started to build an office and warehouse complex in Greece, scheduled for completion by the end of this year. A new central warehouse was opened in China, and projects to expand the high-bay warehouses in Australia and Poland are set to commence this autumn. With its commitment to renowned environmental networks and the use of alternative forms of energy in manufacturing and building activities, Blum always strives to use resources carefully and responsibly, in all areas of the company.
New products and services During the financial year of 2015/16, the company has retained its strategic focus on the development of new products and services. In line with the current design trend that focuses on kitchens and furniture pieces
With innovative fittings solutions in all three product groups (lifts, hinges, pull-outs), Blum reflects current design trends
with handle-less fronts, Blum offers sophisticated solutions in all three product groups (lifts, hinges and pull-outs). This includes box systems and runner systems for wooden drawers, but also the lift and hinge systems. The new motion technology Tip-On Blumotion combines mechanical opening with gentle, quiet closing and was a feature in many of the show kitchens presented at this year's Milan Furniture Fair. Blum's product range is completed by different services such as the Online Product Configurator that allows users to find the right fittings in a speedy and uncomplicated manner, or the mobile app for manufacturers and fitters that facilitates dimension calculations and product adjustments. The service range for customers and partners with its focus on assembly, marketing and logistics is expanded continuously.
Outlook for the upcoming financial year 2016/2017 It is difficult to assess what the upcoming financial year has in store. The problems arising from the sanctions imposed on Russia and the effects of the unstable political situation in Turkey will continue to make themselves felt. Blum hopes that the economic situation in North America and the Asia-Pacific reason will remain stable. In South America, particularly in Brazil, there are few indications of economic recovery. However, Blum remains convinced that their family enterprise will be able to make a positive impact during the financial year 2016/2017, based on innovative products, international market presence and outstanding staff. Automated Integrated Solutions From Biesse At W16 The Biesse Group will demonstrate how anyone can seize the rich opportunities offered by the so-called Industrial Revolution 4.0, having anticipated the future needs of the market and its customers Biesse can now translate this concept in to practice. 4.0 ready technology achieve levels of efficiency which today, more than ever, are crucial for keeping abreast of the competition in an increasingly global market. Following the concept of Think4ward, the company’s fundamental desire is to
remain by the side of its customers throughout the challenges that the fourth industrial revolution will bring. Biesse are dedicated to spreading the culture of automation to all their customers, even medium sized and smaller companies in order to guide them on the path to increased competitiveness. Factories are going digital – the machines communicate with each other via automation systems and interaction software and can ‘imagine’ the product, simulate construction and carry out tests before it has ever been made.
Biesse has significantly stepped up investments in technology, new showrooms, exhibitions and targeted events, and is developing the best distribution network in the world to offer clients the best customer experience in keeping with the Think4ward concept. Stands A510, D610 and N610.

The WNA range allows each of the two cutting stations to work independently of each other. This solution allows users to simultaneously manage multiple stages of a single cutting pattern, significantly reducing production times.
The Selco WNA6 configuration is equipped with the cutter module, the industry-leading Biesse solution for the automatic execution of thirdphase cutting operations. During the rip cutting machining operations, the Selco WNA6 reduces the width of the workpiece, so that the panel arrives at the next step of the process at its final size. The entire process is fully automated with no need for operator intervention.
Flexible edgebanding becomes automated: Biesse solutions support customers in the Fourth Industrial Revolution challenge. By using the Winner W4 loading system in a cell with Akron 1400, Stream A and Stream B edgebanding machines, flexible edgebanding is now automated making the process efficient with just one operator and increasing machine productivity by 25%.
The new system is a perfect combination of efficiency and simplicity

Automatic and modular: The system unloads and stacks the panels at the end of each machining cycles. Using its size measuring sensors, it creates piles of different sized panels and checks their stability.
Biesse boring range - ready to tackle anything: The Made in Biesse boring range is the only one with solutions for moving panels, both horizontally and vertically, and also guarantees optimum management of panels with more delicate surfaces. A full range with solutions for any productivity and flexibility requirements, based on our customers’ real needs.
R10 Revolver Unit The R10 Revolver Unit has always been an important part of the Vektor range. It can perform very rapid tool changes in less than 2 seconds. This means that average machining times are reduced by 40% compared with a conventional system and the routing speed is increased by at least 30% due to the HSD electrospindle’s higher power. Finally, due to the versatile combinations of available aggregates, customers can always meet production requirements, no matter how complex they are.
X-Feeder: the new compact loading solution: The X-Feeder adapts automatically to different panel formats, thanks to the automatic positioning of suction cups depending on panel size. The loader can be configured with 2 or 3 arms depending on the characteristics of the materials to be processed, and can lift panels of up to 4400mm in length. This solution can be easily adapted to any manufacturing context, occupying a reduced footprint and optimizing the production.
The stroke of genius that increases machining centre profitability: In the current scenario, manufacturing companies are increasingly having to adapt to market demand: the ability to create custom commissions and provide one-to-one solutions is imperative to production. Synchro makes it possible to machine larger lots of panels, including those of different sizes, working alongside the machining centre to position each piece without the slightest interruptions. Moreover, the integration of Synchro into production process allows for businesses to optimize their costs, as the system works completely autonomously, even without an operator present. Accordingly, precious manpower is spared and can thus be used for activities with higher added value. Furthermore, inactive machine time for panel changeover is drastically reduced, and the risk of damage to materials resulting from handling of the panel by the operator is effectively eliminated.
Automatic positioning of the suction cup bar: Supreme productivity thanks to the automatic positioning of the suction cup bar. The process never needs to be interrupted by manual interventions, leading to a drastic reduction in processing times for stacks of panels of different sizes.

PREVIEW
The Genisis Brand at W16 When investing in a new piece of equipment, choosing the right supplier is just as important as choosing the right machine. J & C O’Meara Ltd was formed some 26 years ago by Father and Son service engineers Messrs Joseph and Carl O’Meara. Back then the company’s main activities revolved around service/maintenance and installation work along with the refurbishment of used woodworking machinery. Around 15 years ago, the Company saw the demand for new machinery increase where customers preferred a quality product with a full warranty at a discounted price as opposed to upgraded older machinery. To this day, that trend has continued to the degree that the supply of new equipment accounts for over 90% of the company’s machinery sales. The reason for this explains Carl O’Meara, ’It’s quite simple really, we offer quality new machinery at discounted prices, all backed up by our no nonsense guarantee. We also enjoy the fact that we are not a traditional sales outlet. We are a totally independent supplier of quality new machinery where we have the opportunity to go out into the Global market and use our experience to source new and exciting products that give that little bit more than as is ordinarily available’. This year at W16, some of the best selling machines from the Genisis brand will be displayed including;
Genisis 512S PCD edge bander with pre mill and corner rounding
This new and innovative edge banding machine has literally taken the industry by storm and now brings the capability of a high specification machine, of compact construction to the small to medium sized furniture maker. The machine is ideal for coil fed materials up to 2mm in thickness,

has pre milling, the unique combined flush/end/corner rounding trimmers, scrapers, solvent cleaners and buffers to give a ready to use finish all working a very production 12m per min. The machine is equipped with a touch screen display and has pre heating of the panel edge to assist in the bonding process during the colder months. This machine will be working and ready for demonstration at the exhibition.
Genisis P32 sliding table panel saw
Having previously sold a German brand of saw, Carl knew exactly what he wanted when he decided to introduce a new machine into the market. This was back in 2006 and now, with over 100 machines installed around the UK, this has proved to be their best selling panel saw. From that very first cut starts a sequence of events that will determine the level of quality and accuracy of how a piece of furniture evolves, this is where the strengths of this machine lie, from the reinforced multi chamber sliding table, to using large diameter rollers to ensure an easy gliding and accurate motion to the fine details from the flip stops to the clear flat scales.
Genisis Briquetters Choosing the right briquetter has been seen as quite a complicated process, when in reality it can be relatively simple. Firstly, material ideally needs a moisture content of around 8-14% and then you just need to know how much waste you are looking to process. All machines have a ‘maximum output’ but this of course depends upon the material being processed. Once this has been established, simply choose the right machine for you. J & C O’Meara have 15 different models to choose from, all use a Siemens touch screen control and all have a load sensor to allow them to work automatically when waste is entered into the hopper. All machines compact at a very
high pressure (around 160 bar) to ensure a completely solid briquette is formed that maintains its shape if packed and transported and of course during burning. The range of models include the compact Nano, the traditional style gravity fed machines and the Vertical machines which have an auger feed and sensor on the output to automatically increase or decrease the amount of waste being entered into the compression chamber. Thus automatically compensating for the waste being processed if shifting from dust to shavings. The vertical series are also easier to integrate under a dust extractor to eliminate the manual handling of the waste. They even have a machine capable of compacting MDF dust… On display and ready to demonstrate will be the Traditional E55 and the Vertical E60 Super machines.
OMC Heated Press
This machine simply needs to be seen to be appreciated. Built in Bergamo, Italy OMC construct their machine frames using structurally graded steel. The frame is that of a 200 ton machine but maximum pressure is capped to 160 tons across the 3100 x 1550mm platen. The machine is oil heated and uses the latest touch screen technology to control the heat, pressure, cycle time and calculate the pressure and exclusion of the outer cylinders when only part loading. OMC build a comprehensive range of hot and cold platen presses, membrane and liquid presses and hydraulic clamping machines.

Weinig And Holz-Her Bring The Next Generation To W16 Weinig - the technology leader in standard machines for planing and profiling, and Holz-her - the high quality panel processing machine specialist will be showcasing their latest innovations as part of the Weinig Group’s presence across three stands around M810 at this year’s W16 Exhibition.
Weinig at W16 In 2004, Weinig began a new era for planing and profiling with the introduction of the Powermat series. Now, Weinig’s next generation is the all-new Powermat 700 which sets the highest standards for four sided processing with the most userfriendly moulder on the market. The new Powermat series underlines Weinig's position as the technology leader in standard machines for planing and profiling. For workshops, the new Powermat 700 entry model ensures production in Weinig quality and with maximum profitability, regardless of the batch size. The combination of proven

no ongoing licence fees are needed which might restrict future choice and company development. The perfect processing centre for any business that needs flexibility combined with economy; the Multirex is unique in its price category.
CNC flexibility is key In solid wood manufacturing today, flexibility is the key. Whether you are switching from making ‘A’ energy rated timber windows to creating workpieces with complex shapes, Weinig’s Multirex CNC uses the very latest technology to make easy work of the most challenging manufacturing, opening up new production potential. Weinig’s long understanding of the changing needs of solid timber processing makes all the difference. The Multirex CNC features innovative and robust clamping technology specifically developed to guarantee the precise machining of solid timber components. Open software architecture means that
Holz-Her at W16 At W16, Holz-Her will feature the latest in its range of vertical CNC machining centre solutions - the Holz-Her Evolution 7405. With a machine footprint of less than 5m2, an easy to use interface, and a patent pending 4-sided milling facility, the HolzHer Evolution’s versatility and flexibility makes machining cambered parts such as furniture fronts and counter tops easy and fast. Precise complete machining on all four workpiece edges as well as the surface allows panels to be formatted completely, resulting in perfect workpieces completely grooved and profiled on all edges (patent

pending). Upgrade to the 7.5 kW HSK spindle with tool changer for 6 tools, and the machine also allows profile milling, point thinning and engraving with automatic tool change. The vacuum-based clamping system (patent pending) is gentle on material and being equipped with software-controlled suction cup positioning with hole recognition, workpieces with lengths of up to 1,500mm can be machined on all sides without re-clamping. This guarantees extremely short cycle times (up to 35% shorter machining cycles) and maximum precision, even on long parts.
Effortless edgebanding with a PURfect finish In response to customer demand for fine to zero glue lines, all Holz-Her edgebanders are capable of delivering a fine glue line as standard. From the smallest edgebanders to the largest production solution, each comes with Holz-Her’s unique and awardwinning Glu Jet system as standard, catering for every size and type of business. Be it high gloss or solid wood edging, the system is both flexible and versatile and comes with a three year warranty.
This is industrial technology for all – you can now process PUR glue as standard, but without the hassle. As the benchmark for professional cabinet makers, most manufacturers would use PUR, but not all machinery can cope with it. With the Glu Jet ready to use in under four minutes with EVA or PUR, Holz-Her’s unique system is the right solution for any edgebanding requirements. Program selection allows the machine to be set up without even opening the hood, so it’s ready for production immediately. But it doesn’t stop there. With the new Holz-Her Lumina series comes an option for the LTronic system – the laser edging unit from Holz-Her unbeatable in terms of speed and cost efficiency. The NIR (Near Infrared Radiation) module in Holz-Her’s LTronic unit transfers heat energy quickly and precisely to the specific point required making it

ideal for activation of function layers on laser edging. Two different NIR modules are available: the standard module for edge heights up to 23mm, or the optional NIR+ module for edge heights up to 45mm. It’s ready to use as soon as you switch it on – there is no heat-up time or any heat-up phases during the machining process. In addition, the complete system operates absolutely silently; a huge advantage over other noisy systems. With the integrated protective plate on the NIR module only needing to be briefly cleaned just once a week, the system is a pioneer in terms of energy efficiency. Mixing Gloss And Matt For A Quality New Look Wood-based panel manufacturer EGGER UK is looking ahead to what it believes will be one of the dominant design themes of 2017 with its latest PerfectSense gloss and matt range. The super-smooth MDF boards highlight a growing trend for mixing and matching solid colours and textures – and are particularly effective when used with woodgrain accents. “Solid colours are growing in popularity as frontals, making surface texture finishes more important than ever,” said the company’s head of décor development Elliott Fairlie. “Our high-quality lacquered board, PerfectSense Gloss, was a popular introduction thanks to its mirror-finish – and we are looking to meet evolving customer tastes by aligning the colour palette with our PerfectSense Matt range. Other decors are already in the pipeline for 2017 – which we believe will be a big year for ‘mix and match’. “PerfectSense Gloss offers high reflective values and a flawless mirror finish – along with a smooth surface that is strong in the fabrication process and particularly resistant to gloss-level changes and micro-scratches in use. “At the same time, the new UV lacquer process gives matt boards unique properties of its own – being highly resistant to heat and abrasion as well as having anti-fingerprint characteristics.” Durability is a key feature of EGGER’s PerfectSense range, making it ideal in a kitchen, commercial environment or interior design project. Larger sheet sizes, double-sided boards, matching edging and coordinated carcass options help designers, specifiers and fabricators to create striking and tactile designs with both a
quality look and feel. EGGER’s gloss finishes have struck a chord with those looking for an up-market appearance and texture. But as they appear more widely across the mass market, end-users are inevitably looking for differentiation at the higher end of the spectrum. “It is here that the ‘mix and match’ concept comes into its own,” added Elliott. “Using EGGER’s new PerfectSense Matt alongside a contrasting gloss offers the chance to combine colour and surface finish, with contrasting textures placing the emphasis on an opposing look and feel. “And it is when you start mixing and matching contrasting gloss and matt frontals, perhaps with woodgrain accents or a hardwearing melamine from our new deeply-textured Feelwood ranges, that things really get interesting.” Both versions of the super-smooth PerfectSense MDF panels come in a larger than normal sheet size of 2800x2070mm with a thickness of 19mm. Coordinating ABS edging is available in 23x1mm and 23x1.3mm PMMA, and some boards also come with a matching Structure 30 finish for a coordinated carcass option. Larger sheet sizes offer both better utilisation of the board and less wastage. Other thicknesses and double-sided boards are available on request, while a protective film is placed on the surface of the board and on the ABS gloss edging for extra protection during handling and production.

Milano High Gloss Panels Now Available In A New Stardust Finish The Milano high gloss panel range, popular in kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture manufacturing has been enhanced with a subtle new sparkle effect, called Stardust, that creates a superior ‘piano gloss’ finish. Stardust enhances the lacquered high gloss surface with a subtle sparkle creating a unique mirror-like finish that is highly luxurious looking. Compared to other materials, such a depth of finish cannot be achieved with standard melamine or laminate, and it is more scratch resistant and cost effective than acrylic panel products. Says Dave Huggins, Business Development Director for Panel Products: “Gloss remains a highly popular look and we have developed the Milano range to combine superior looks with the practicalities for easy handling, cutting and finishing by our manufacturing customers. The panels are also fully PEFC certified.” The Milano range is based on six colours of jet black, brilliant white, light grey, ivory, graphite and kashmir reflecting the most commercially popular colours. Each of these will now be available as a plain solid colour or in the new Stardust finish, making an offer of 12 finishes overall. Milano High Gloss in Stardust is supplied with the high gloss
layer to one side and matching colour on reverse in a satin finish. Panels are supplied with a clear protective film to protect the gloss surface. The MFMDF panels are available in a sheet size of 2800 x 1220 x 18mm un-edged, with a standard pack size of 25 boards. Two styles of edging available, either a matching gloss or two-layer 3D to give the appearance of a glass fronted panel. Reaffirming IDS’s commitment to the environment, Milano High Gloss also benefits from PEFC certification as standard. Milano High Gloss panels are exclusively distributed by International Decorative Surfaces nationwide offering ex-stock availability from its 13 regional branches for fast and flexible delivery.

Alphacam Makes The Mission Possible For Film Studios’ Cavalry Whenever a new job comes into a company that film studios describe as needing the “cavalry,” digital designer and CNC supervisor Jason Szukalski is instantly thinking how Alphacam CAD/CAM software will break it down into machinable parts. “We’re getting a reputation for being the cavalry because we can pull things out of the bag for the studios, by doing urgent jobs for them extremely quickly. And Alphacam’s the reason we can achieve this.” With Watford-based Anarchy being just minutes away from the Warner Bros studios at Leavesden, that happens on a regular basis when a director changes their mind or an actor needs something different. The company also works closely with film studios at Shepperton, Pinewood and Elstree, creating high-tech futuristic, contemporary and period set dressings and props. In addition, they have a growing portfolio of work for television, point of sale and art installations. Film work includes using Alphacam to create 50 I.T. servers, entrance lobby desks for the latest in the Mission Impossible series, Rogue Nation, starring Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg; film chronometers, sextants, whalebones, chests, anchor chains and barrels for In The Heart Of The Sea, starring Chris Hemsworth; and retro control units and a number of gadgets including bugs and bug

detecting equipment for The Man From U.N.C.L.E., directed by Guy Ritchie. “We sometimes think there’s no way we can do their rush jobs in the time span they give us, but we’ve succeeded every time, because Alphacam creates models and CNC code so quickly. We may have only a couple of days to do an impossible job. But Alphacam makes it possible.” Typically a line drawing for a film prop will be in feet and inches, which he converts into millimetres and starts sketching it in Alphacam. “I may use Creo to do some 3D work, then it goes back into Alphacam where I break out all the individual components for machining, and send the NC code to the machine.” Although he describes his 3-axis Pratix NST 8 x 4 router as an “entry-level” machine, he says driving it with Alphacam makes a big difference by producing highly complex items. “Using Alphacam means the Pratix performs tasks it was not originally designed to do. You’d be hard pushed to look at some of our highend parts and not think they’ve come off a 5axis machine.” Around 95 per cent of Anarchy’s jobs begin life as an Alphacam drawing and move on to the router for cutting with Alphacam toolpaths. “Then there are traditional model making techniques for finishing, and on to the spray
booth. If it’s a mechanical type of job there’ll be engineers working on it, too, but Alphacam, is central to everything – that’s what brings it all together. “I’ve been using Alphacam for nearly 25 years, and as soon as I look at a job I’m mentally breaking it down into the machinable parts and thinking of the necessary workflow.” Anarchy operates out of 5,000 square metre premises with four employees...calling on a number of subcontractors when they’re working on a major film. They cut a wide range of material, including MDF, hardwood, softwood, aluminium, brass, foam, Foamex, polycarbonate, nylon and chemiwood. Any steel work that is required is drawn up in Alphacam and sent to a subcontractor for laser cutting. Jason Szukalski, who is a director of Anarchy, began his career as a model maker when everything was done by hand. “I embraced CNC technology when it came in, as I could see what a valuable tool it was, and it’s absolutely vital now I’m working with special effects, making objects and props for films and advertising, which is very exciting. “I can be sitting at home watching television, and suddenly comes on that we’ve made. It’s a real buzz.” For further information: www.verosoftware.com. Anarchy: www.anarchyltd.com Alphacam: www.alphacam.com

SOFTWARE Complex 5-Axis Programming Made Easy With Alphacam A shopfitting company has doubled the output on its CNC router, driven by Alphacam, in the last two years. The Wensley Group provides a bespoke design, manufacturing and installation service to the retail, leisure, education and healthcare sectors, manufacturing shop counters, pub bars and back fittings, staircases, doors and windows. While Alphacam CAD/CAM software plays a part in the design and production process for around 95 per cent of their jobs, CNC programmer Mark Greening says it really comes into its own on 5-axis staircase work. “Even straightforward staircases can be quite complex on the CNC machine, but the bigger and more complex-shaped ones with features such as curves, tangents and scrolls, would be almost impossible without Alphacam. “If the shop floor were to make even a simple, straight flight of stairs manually, it would take between three and four days. Using Alphacam I can do it in half a day.” When he joined the West Midlands company around two years ago, neither their Alphacam Ultimate nor the 5-axis 36tool Reichenbacher CNC router which it drives, were being deployed effectively. “I invested time in developing how we used the machine and getting the tooling right. We’re still improving on that, but Alphacam gives us the confidence to try anything on it.” Five-axis work is becoming increasingly important, and he says the complexity of the shapes and curved handrails that he produces with Alphacam has surprised a
number of people at the company. “Some of the designs we’re asked to work with are virtually impossible to make any other way. “Everything I do goes through Alphacam, starting with designing the products, through to them coming off the router.” He utilises many of Alphacam’s extensive CAD features, from a very basic aspect of drawing a line, to creating a surface. “When I’ve finished the design I move on to programming with the CAM operation. We work with a selection of tools, and because everything’s done onscreen I can run a simulation to see what works and what doesn’t, before we come to the machining stage. Alphacam shows us if the product we want to cut is fully machineable. “We can receive the work as a copy of a drawing which I then redraw in Alphacam, or the client may send a full architectural drawing where I simply break it down into the components and program them in Alphacam, or I may be asked to draw something entirely from scratch based on the client’s idea.” Even after the program has been sent to the machine there may be occasions when it needs to be amended. “All we do is switch the toolpaths off and change the lines were necessary without having to redraw or reprogram it.” He says many of their staircases have handrails that are twisted as well as curved, which are readily produced in Alphacam using polylines, splines and surfaces. “A lot of them need to be drawn almost freehand to produce what’s needed for the machining, and it would be quite difficult to do using a solid model package.” Retail contracts often call for a complete shopfitting service involving counters, point-of-sale stands and window displays...and with pub refurbishments requiring bars and the full back-fitting, Wensley Group use a wide range of materials, including ply, MDF, hardwoods, softwoods, Tricoya panels and Corian. Mark Greening prefers to go on-site to personally measure up, ensuring his Alphacam drawings are accurate first time. “If I’m given a full architectural drawing instead, I’ll break it down in to all its
See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com
component parts – tops, fronts, sides – right down to the skirtings, so every component goes on to the Alphacam drawing, ready for programming with the toolpaths.” As their work is almost entirely bespoke he is constantly called upon to produce different jobs, all with different components, so he says each job has its own unique challenge. “But being able to draw it in Alphacam and get everything right on screen first is absolutely invaluable. The software is now an integral part of our production process.” Always using the most up-to-date Alphacam release keeps them at the forefront of CAD/CAM technology, which he says is vital to get the best out of the Reichenbacher router. And on the rare occasion they need guidance on an issue the Alphacam support team are always quick to resolve it. “One piece of 5-axis code wouldn’t work on the machine, so I sent the program to Alphacam through their support portal and they altered our post processor. We were back up and running with a perfect program just a few hours later.”

Cabinet Vision Adapted For Revolutionary New Material Cabinet Vision engineers have set up a customised program to manage an innovative manufacturing process for waterproof and bacteria-proof cabinets produced out of a specially developed unique material. The idea for the revolutionary Sealwise WCB (Waterproof Construction Material) came to its creator Paul Huggins when he was in hospital. “On the trip to a wetroom for my first shower after being unable to walk, I discovered there was nowhere to put my clothes while I had a shower. Also, months after leaving hospital I watched TV footage of the floods in Worcestershire and saw dozens of ruined kitchens being thrown away. It all spurred me on to investigate whether material was available anywhere in the world for waterproof carpentry. And there wasn’t.” He was shocked to learn that around 400,000 tonnes of wood particle board were being thrown into UK landfill sites every year. “That’s actually around 560 times higher than the London Shard building – and as a single footprint of 8 x 4
46 Panel & Joinery Production SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016
sheet would reach beyond mobile phone satellites in orbit.” He worked closely with a German company, Simona, to develop a waterproof construction sheet material, which could be used for cabinetry that was also fire retardant and had anti-bacteria properties. At that time he was Managing Director of Wood Wise Trading Ltd, a company which he later developed to be the number one choice for manufacturing Sealwise products. Today he runs both companies, with Wood Wise being based in Somerset; alongside a Regional office of Sealwise. In addition, Sealwise have their head office in Belfast. Whilst Wood Wise are classed as the centre of expertise for working with Sealwise WCB, Sealwise also work with a number of manufacturers and distributors in the UK, along with selling into around a dozen export markets. Co-extruded from recycled material, Sealwise is a single homogeneous sheet material which is made out of three parts, including a recycled upvc core and pvc surface. The three layers come together in a
wet state, which means they then chemically bond together preventing any chance of future delamination. Furthermore, at the end of the product’s lifecycle it can be further recycled into material for injection moulding. Having used Cabinet Vision and its Screen-To-Machine module from Vero Software to design and manufacture the full range of Woodwise products for around ten years, he says the software needed a slight modification to be as equally effective with Sealwise. “We work with Sealwise sheets of 8 x 4 and 10 x 5, but instead of using cam and dowels on separate sides, top and base, we make cabinets predominantly out of one continuous piece. The two ends are cut to 45 degrees, and V grooves are routed to fold it. We’ll roll the cabinet over four times, and it clicks together at the end with a final Ovvo joint, all from the one piece of Sealwise. When it clicks together it creates enough pressure so that when W14 solvent is applied for the capillary action to work, it seals all the internal joints completely.” For more details on this see the web site www.sealwise.co.uk. He says that because the traditional Cabinet Vision software is parts led…creating individual parts and then applying joints…Cabinet Vision engineers developed special programs to ignore parts, and create one complete cabinet carcase, with the grooves to allow the folding. Wood Wise invested in a new Busellato CNC router from RW Machines, and with the assistance of their engineers added some additional aggregates for the special grooving and Ovvo joint work. “This final joint is written into the program and sent to the machine by Screen-To-Machine, ensuring the clip is always used in exactly the right place.” Charlie Huggins, who runs the Wood Wise production operation, says that despite its unique characteristics Sealwise

SOFTWARE
is machined in exactly the same way as MDF and chipboard, and, as well as the patented groove and fold system, it can also be cam and dowelled, screwed and glued. This means that everything they have ever made in wood and board with Cabinet Vision, can also be replicated in Sealwise. “Sealwise costs slightly more than MFC and similar to that of HDF board, so is a quality product, but is getting widely known as being the best at what it does in its sectors.” It has been used to replace a large number of kitchens in flood areas throughout the UK, including around 45 in Cumbria. As well as installed in around 50 NHS hospitals in the UK, Sealwise is being used in the new hospital programme in Kuwait, and the company is handling enquiries from 90 hospitals in China. A new shadow board, for Hillbrush, is currently in being made for the food industry, and they have recently manufactured a range of kennels for catteries for Technic, which were previously made from stainless steel. After designing the kennels, Cabinet Vision’s nester simply looks at a 10 x 5 Sealwise sheet, cuts it out to the correct sizes which then have the grooves cut in, and their machine operators simply take it off the bed, fold it, add the
back panel and click the final joint into place, before it is sealed. They also supplied all the kitchens in the Battersea Dogs’ Home refurbishment in 2015. In addition to being waterproof and fire retardant with a B1 fire rating, Sealwise inhibits bacteria’s reproductive system meaning MRSA and e-coli bacteria, for example, die out extremely quickly. Other benefits: its screw retention is 2.5 times higher than MDF – in tests conducted by Exeter University nearly five tonnes of pressure was required to pull out an M8 screw; and tolerances go down to 0.8 of a mm, matching those of MDF and chipboard. Sealwise has been tested against some other cheaper imports for safe ingredients and where the lead content of the imports was far over the regulatory levels, Sealwise’s lead content was so low that testers struggled to even measure it. And because of its anti-bacterial and fire retardant USPs, Paul Huggins has built in a special safeguard to instantly show architects, builders and auditors that they have the patented product and not an unauthorised copy. “They have an additive called Verimaster which means if their laser pen is run over Sealwise, it lights up certain molecules, rather like when shops scan £10

notes.” This is an industry first and reassures all those who specify Sealwise that they get Sealwise. He says before they had the Busellato to manufacture the Sealwise products, they would design their MDF and chipboard cabinets in Cabinet Vision and send the programs to their machine using ScreenTo-Machine. “Now, all that’s changed regarding the process for Sealwise is that when we’ve designed the cabinets we apply the special over-ride for Cabinet Vision to ignore the separate parts, and create the NC code for cutting the sides, top and base as one piece of material, and routing the V grooves for folding it together.”

INSTALLATION Bespoke Kitchen Manufacturer Invests In Kimla CNC Router Cheshire based McKye’s Bespoke Furniture Designers and manufacturers specialise in the production of high quality kitchens. The decision to invest in a Kimla CNC router was prompted by increased demand and the requirement to reduce panel processing times. Following a working demonstration at the Daltons Wadkin Nottingham show room, Tim McKye quickly realised the benefits of a Kimla over other CNC routers on the market. ‘The build quality of the Kimla was immediately apparent. One of the key things for me was the physical foot print. Space is always a premium but the Kimla is compact. We opted for a machine to accommodate jumbo boards, but even with the large working area it takes up very little relative space in our workshop’. Each Kimla is manufactured to order. With almost limitless combinations of bed sizes, spindle types, tool changers, table configurations etc the Kimla is a fully customisable CNC machine. Tim continues, ‘I had been met by blank expressions from other manufactures when I asked about increased Z axis heights or increased working areas but for Kimla it
was no trouble. A truly refreshing approach.’ The Kimla BPF model was equipped with a 9kW spindle, 10 position tool changer, 2.1 x 3.1m matrix vacuum table for nesting, 300mm Z axis and table reference pins. Each Kimla is supplied with its own powerful CADCAM software package, but as Tim was already familiar with Vectric software a post processor was installed for seamless integration. ‘The speed and accuracy of the machine is phenomenal’, enthuses Tim. ‘With the large format bed I can nest components from a jumbo sheet. Work that previously took me a week now takes just two or three hours. Fitting time on site is also quicker as everything is accurate and fits first time.’ A key attribute of the Kimla machines is versatility, and the ability to continually monitor cutting paths to regulate the feed speed ensures the best possible finish. ‘We are now cutting Corian, something I have not even thought of before. The increased Z axis means I can mount vacuum pods on the matrix table for solid wood processing too. Again, something that set the Kimla apart for me.’
Daltons Wadkin have been specialising in CNC machines for over 10 years and have experience of installations across a range of industries including aerospace, automotive, sign and shopfitting, stage and set design, plastics and education as well as traditional furniture and joinery manufacturing. ‘This year sees us celebrate 115 years of service to the industry’, comments director Alex Dalton. ‘We have built our reputation on supplying only the very best equipment with a continual emphasis on quality and service. The Kimla range of CNC routers fits perfectly into our product portfolio. Traditional joinery equipment is still an important part of our business, but it is our range of high-tech CNC products that offer our customers the biggest opportunity to boost production, increase quality and cut costs’. PROFILE At Last, A High Quality, Truly Affordable EntryLevel Beam Saw – The HOLZMA HPP 130 It’s been a long time coming, but LIGNA 2015 saw the launch of a new beam saw equipped with everything the small or craft workshop needs to cut single panels and small batches cost effectively. Not surprisingly, the new addition to the marketplace is the brainchild of global market leader HOLZMA. Designated the HPP 130, this power-packed compact beam saw costs little more than a well-equipped table saw; it performs, however, to a much higher level of precision and with far greater efficiency. “It has always been a bit of a bone of contention with smaller companies that they cannot justify the investment in a beam saw,” claims Simon Brooks, HOMAG UK’s sales and marketing director. He continues, “This new HOLZMA HPP 130 is a real gamechanger. Not only is it manufactured to the same exacting standards as the more expensive HOLZMA saws, but also it delivers all the benefits of larger beam saws at just £3.64 per hour based over 5 years, with a 20% deposit and operational 40 hours per week. This makes it a truly affordable and better alternative. “Traditionally, small workshops have had to make do with table saws which are less accurate, more of a health and safety risk, and less productive. With a saw carriage speed of up to 60m/minute, the HPP 130 delivers faster, more accurate cutting. A benefit further enhanced by the electronically controlled program fence which has an electro-magnetic measuring system to
guarantee dimensional accuracy of plus or minus 0.2mm.”
Made-to-measure control system – CADmatic 4 BASIC The CADmatic software was developed especially for production processes in panel dividing technology. The HPP 130 is driven by this software which the operator controls via a 19” low energy, crystal clear flat screen monitor. This easy to use specialist panel processing software allows manual adjustment of the scoring saw blade and has a graphically supported diagnostic feature.
Options to create a bespoke saw There are a number of options that can be specified for the HPP 130 to create a saw that is designed for your specific needs. As standard, the machine features HOLZMA’s robust clamps which gently and accurately position material over the cutting line. To provide extra grip, however, additional clamps in positions two and four enable the secure clamping of large, thin or smooth panels. The main saw motor is a powerful 5.5kW, but this can be uprated to a stronger 7.5kW motor if required. The in feed air cushion tables are 500mm wide as standard, but can be specified at 650mm wide to allow for larger panels. Additional rollers on the edge of the air cushion table are also optional; these make gentle handling of larger panels easier and safer.
Another productive option is the label printer which enables the printing of customised labels directly at the saw. These labels can include bar codes, text and graphics for clear parts labelling. When combined with HOLZMA’s Cut Rite optimisation software, the label machine can produce parts labels with instructions for downstream CNC machining. The Cut Rite optimisation software, which is proven to boost performance and efficiency of panel sizing, enables better control of costs and makes faster calculations to improve the cutting processes.
Opening up new business opportunities “The HOMAG Group announced a host of new and improved machinery at LIGNA this year,” concludes Simon Brooks, “but the HOLZMA HPP 130 has the potential to change the market forever. We see it as one of the most exciting breakthroughs and one that will open up new levels of professionalism to the smaller manufacturers. “The interest at the show was fantastic and we are looking forward to demonstrating the saw at our Castle Donington showroom where UK customers can see this amazing little beam saw put through its paces.” If you would like more information or a demonstration of the HOLZMA HPP 130 beam saw, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

Three Salvador Crosscuts In One Sawmill Daltons Wadkin Success in Scottish Borders Forest Garden Ltd is one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and distributors of garden timber products. The company visited the Ligna Fair in Hannover to compare the latest automatic crosscutting technology and immediately saw that Salvador could meet their requirements. The enquiry was passed to Daltons Wadkin as sole distributors for Salvador in the UK and Ireland who arranged working demonstrations on the complete range of straight and angle cutting machines. Andy Walsh, Sales Director for Daltons Wadkin, travelled to the Lockerbie based sawmill to assess their needs. ‘We have considerable experience with this type of application. The mill at Forest Garden is very impressive with 8 automatic crosscuts processing up to 1000 m3 of locally sourced timber a week. The original remit was to replace one of the crosscuts but once they saw what Salvador could offer it was decided that a combination of straight and angle cutting machines would offer the greatest benefit’. Daltons Wadkin installed two Salvador SuperPush 250 crosscuts alongside a Salvador SuperAngle 600. Both SuperPush 250 machines are identical featuring 6.2m infeed length capacity, automatic chain loading and tilt return ejection system on the outfeed. ‘This is a high capacity configuration’, comments Andy. ‘Boards are stacked to maximise throughput and the
chain feed system delivers a continuous supply to the machine while the outfeed system collects the cut sections before pushing them out in a pack for the operator to easily collect.’ The SuperAngle 600 offers angle cutting capacity up to +/- 70°. As with the SuperPush models the machine is processing multiple lengths at once and is also equipped with tilt return ejection system for quick outfeed sorting. Common across all Salvador automatic crosscut models is the powerful but intuitive control software and operator interface. Optimisation and defecting facility is provided as standard along with direct and offline programming of cutting lists from spreadsheets or third party stock management software. Drymill Manager, Jerry McLachlan, is pleased with what Daltons Wadkin has delivered. ‘The three Salvador’s have actually replaced four of our old saws and still have capacity to spare. We produce a range of products including garden buildings, fencing, decking and decorative structures so flexibility is important. However, for me, it is not only about the machines capability. Technical support and backup is key. The Daltons Wadkin team have exceptional knowledge of all things Salvador - from initially identifying the right machines through to delivery and implementation’. Since the late nineties Forest Garden has
One of the three Salvador crosscuts installed by Daltons Wadkin and in action at Forest Garden Products
seen many changes through acquisition and organic growth. In 2006 a new management structure integrated a number of operational processes to ensure faster response to market demands. The company now operates two separate divisions, Forest Garden and Forest Sawmills, the latter operating out of two sites with the largest being based in Lockerbie, Scotland and has the largest specialist fencing sawmill in the country. Forest Garden is the manufacturing and distribution arm of the business and is based in Hartlebury, Worcestershire. It proudly boasts the largest manufacturing and distribution sites in its sector from where it delivers weekly to over 3,000 retail outlets in peak season. In addition to that, it also operates an industry leading home delivery service which delivers a staggering 100,000 units per annum. Daltons Wadkin have supplied Salvador automatic crosscuts to a range of industries including garden product manufacturers, sawmills, timber frame manufacturers, sofa and bed manufacturers, timber merchants, door and window manufacturers, flooring specialists and many more.

PROFILE SCM Olimpic K560, The Complete Edgebander With A New Two Motor Rounding Unit The latest Single-Sided Edge Bander from the SCM Group is the Olimpic K560, a compact and productive machine. It has been designed to continuously operate on production for many hours per day. It is perfect solution for all companies that require high productivity when edge banding a large number of panels at the same time, or with very short production runs requiring changeover rapidly. With a great optimum performance to price ratio, the K560 is a reliable edge bander with top finishing quality and productivity that even small and medium-sized woodworking, furniture and panel processing companies can now afford. The RT-V Panel Edge Trimming Unit guarantees a perfect edge joint line, with a surface without any imperfections on the panel edge before gluing. It utilises 2
motors with opposite rotation and with large diameter tools (100 mm). The panel edge trimming is up to 3mm thickness. A perfect glue joint line is obtained with a glue roller that ensures uniform glue application on all types of materials. Increased productivity is up to 12% with a feed speed of 12 – 18
metres/min. Panel thickness is 0.4 to 3mm (6mm optional). Productivity and quality is assured with 2-motor technology on the Rounding and Trimming Unit. The features of the rounding unit allow for the double function of both simultaneous trimming and rounding operations. The two joint operations, within a single group, require less space and, together with the working distance between panels of only 600 mm, gives a reduction in time for the edge banding of panels in long production runs. The “R-K” trimming unit provides 3 different machining operations. Rapid machining changeover between thin, thick and solid wood edges is due to the 3 working positions and the “Combi” tool that is supplied as a standard feature. There are 2 choices of program control units. The ORION One Plus is simple and intuitive. The control with its buttons, customised graphics and 4” display allows for and error-free machining. With the “Touch 7” control, just a “touch” is required to use the machine. Error free machining with the touch-screen display and customised graphics that allows an intuitive and easy selection of the main machine functions. Sav¤nergy allows the use of power only when they are required, making the features of the machine operate only when they are really necessary. It means the machine automatically enters into “standby” mode when there are no panels to be machined at any particular time, providing lower power consumption = lower costs = more competiveness (An option).

PROFILE HOMAG Demystifies The Increasingly Complex World Of Edgebanding Advances in technology have driven quality expectations higher and higher, particularly in manufacturing. The furniture industry is no exception and one manifestation of this is the advent of edgebanding ‘without joints’ or, as it is more commonly known, ‘zero-joint’ technology. There is now a mind-boggling range of options to choose from, so we thought it would be a good idea to demystify the process. Simon Brooks, sales and marketing director of HOMAG UK explains, “The HOMAG Group has been a pioneer of edgebanding since 1960 and so, with over 55 years’ experience under its belt, is well placed to explain the potentially confusing world of edging.”
or heat resistant products and PUR adhesive provides this additional performance. Far less PUR adhesive per square metre is required to form a much stronger bond when compared to traditional hot melts. Consequently, this reduced volume of adhesive results in a very tight glue line. It also offers superior bond strength to EVA, although it does take longer to fully cure than the instant ‘grab’ of EVA; this, however, has no detriment to the quality of the product whatsoever. FINISHING
Gallito Adds Finishing Touch At Ellis Furniture Spray booth and drying systems specialist, Gallito Limited, has recently completed the installation of a new paint spraying facility for leading furniture manufacturer Ellis Furniture. At its factory in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, Ellis Furniture design and manufacture strong, durable and safe furniture to meet challenging environments such as schools & universities, care homes and hotels, as well as manufacturing high quality kitchen and bathroom furniture for the retail market. Founded in 1891 by J Thomas Ellis, and at the forefront of UK furniture making for 125 years, Ellis Furniture still remains a privately owned family business. Today, operating from a modern factory with 200,000 sq. ft. of production space, the company designs and manufactures furniture to exacting standards, and utilises a combination of traditional skills with some of the most up to date production machinery of its kind. Manufacturing is complemented by an extensive finishing and assembly facility where the company’s latest investment in technology has been undertaken to fulfil the needs of a changing market requirement. Ellis Furniture’s engineering manager, Paul Dudley, explains: “Our production processes cover a wide range of materials including high pressure laminates, MFC, real woods and veneers, as well as painting and lacquering a variety of different substrates. Since the launch of our ‘1891’ painted collection of kitchens and bathrooms, demand for paint-finished products has continued to grow, and the decision was made to invest in an automatic panel spray painting line to manage this increasing demand. However, we needed to retain our capability of undertaking short run and tailored production and, since this would be uneconomic to run on the automatic paint line, we still had a requirement for handspraying and a traditional spray booth.” The company previously had two

individual spray booths which had been sufficient for their needs in the past but, they weren’t in the ideal location, and both booths were now nearing the end of their serviceable life. Paul Dudley continues: “We have a long history with Dust Control Systems; they’ve maintained our extraction system for many years, and have previously
installed an Ecogate extraction optimisation system for us, and a highly-efficient 110,000 m3/hr Schuko filter. FINISHING hesitation in calling in Gallito (one of the DCS group of companies) to present a design proposal.” Following a site visit to Ellis Furniture, Ian Ward, managing director of Gallito Ltd, put forward a proposal for a fully contained 50m2 enclosure, housing three separate 3000mm wide dry filter spray booths; providing a working floor area of almost 40m2, a working height of 2960mm, and a total filter area of over 20 sq. metres. The enclosure is manufactured from 1.2mm thick galvanised folded panels, bolted together and sealed, and product entry and exit is provided by centrally located, selfclosing double hinged doors. A separate personnel access door is located at one end, and double doors at the opposite end allow access to an existing drying room. Clean filtered air is drawn from the factory by fans located above the enclosure, and lighting is provided by twelve 1500mm long twin fluorescent fittings. Each booth is served by its own 710mm diameter 3kW axial fan, running at 1400rpm and extracting up to 3.37m3 per second. 710mm diameter ducting, routed between roof trusses and out through the roof, allows vertical discharge of filtered air to atmosphere. Inside the enclosure, the spraying area comprises three standard Gallito DFB300

plenums fitted side by side – two 1000mm deep removable partitions allow each 3 metre wide area to be used independently or, when the partitions are removed, provide a working width up to 9 metres. Ian Ward, commenting on the Ellis installation, said: “To ensure a long,
trouble-free working life, Gallito booths are built to the highest standards, using premium grade materials, and all galvanised panels are cut to size on a CNC laser cutter, then folded and formed to give a perfect fit and seal.” “Gallito’s engineers completed the installation and commissioned our new spray facility in a one week window we had earmarked for the work”, says Paul Dudley, “and we are delighted with the quality of the whole structure. The installation now allows us to produce short runs economically, to a quality-controlled standard, and we also use the booths to produce accurate sample products for client approval prior to volume production on the automatic spray line.”
(Left) With a working floor area of 40m2, the Gallito enclosure provides Ellis Furniture with a clean, safe environment for paint spraying.

Norbord’s OSB Campaign Helps JT Atkinson Boost Sales of SterlingOSB The family-owned company, which has 24 branches across Tyneside and Cumbria, has been running the campaign since late March and has seen sales of SterlingOSB increase significantly over the past couple of months. "Norbord provided us with a promotional package including posters, point-of-sale information and giveaways. In addition and key for us, their reps came in and did some in-store training for our sales staff," says the company's timber development manager, Jonny Atkinson. "The training was all very informal and relaxed; it gave our people the knowledge to talk to customers about the product with confidence," adds Jonny. In particular, JT Atkinson's staff have been able to talk to customers about the advantages of using SterlingOSB in place of more traditional products - in particular softwood ply. Customers have responded very positively to the campaign says Jonny: "The idea of swapping plywood for OSB has been

planted amongst the pro-ply customers and we also have traditional OSB users." JT Atkinson's customer base includes several timber-framers and modular housebuilders for whom SterlingOSB has much to offer. "Our customers use it for all sorts of weird and wonderful things and are curious to learn more about its versatility," says Jonny. The proof of the pudding is of course in the eating and Jonny says that he has noticed a significant increase in SterlingOSB sales since launching the campaign. "Our branch network has grown over the past 12 months, so the figures are hard to pin down, but looking at our sales figures there has definitely been an increase. "SterlingOSB3 18mm is our biggestselling OSB product and we have seen a 55% increase on sales since 2015," explains Jonny. While a proportion of these additional sales are down to information being made

DUST EXTRACTION Full Environmental Waste Management Upgrade For Touch Design In Devon Dustraction has installed a new dust extraction and management system with Touch Design Group in Devon. The newly commissioned extraction plant has been installed to operate automatically in tandem with a new boiler system by long-standing and leading waste-to-energy partner Wood Waste Technology at the new factory of long standing dust extraction customer Touch Design in Exeter. Touch Design Group is well known for the architect-inspired interior projects it undertakes, many of them in the most exclusive territories of London’s West End. Kitchens, bedrooms with dressing
rooms, libraries, bars, staircases – whatever the project, skilled craftsmen make each piece to order using both CNC technology and traditional bench skills. Their top-end users are unstinting in the production quality demands of directors Ed Tremlett and David Crosby, who are similarly uncompromising when it comes to the demands they set for their dust extraction and working environment standards. "When we moved to our Exeter site a year ago, we needed to upgrade our dust extraction system so that it worked seamlessly with the new boiler that was planned from Wood Waste Technology,"
recalls David Crosby. "We had used both them and Dustraction before and their working association and standards of engineering meant we could be assured of an integrated fit – which was exactly what we needed because the funding we had secured was for a complete package. Dustraction is used to working both with Wood Waste Technology and also now with us, so it made good sense to stick with the partnership we knew and were used to." Dustraction's quotation included upgrading the existing extraction system and replacing its Dustrax four-section filter with a new six-section 27RV Dustrax

filter, to be fed from a new 37kW fan-set together with another new fan-set to enable the waste to be discharged directly to a waste silo. The Dustrax 27RV wood-waste filter has an automatic shake-down of waste from the tubular sock-type filters giving an area of around 162 square metres. Waste is transferred into the end of the hopper section by a floor-mounted fan-set and is discharged via a heavy duty rotary valve air-seal. “The whole of the filter plant,” says Steve Matuska, “is mounted on a galvanised steel support structure that's been specially designed by us to raise the rotary valve high enough so that waste can be fed directly into the conveying system, silo and WWT boiler installation to work in syncro and fully automatically.” An access door has been included below the rotary valve to discharge waste directly to a container or bulker bag to bypass the boiler if required and explosion relief is in accordance with ATEX requirements and
has been built into the filter by Dustraction. Operation of the entire plant is controlled from a single control panel and the finished installation enables Touch Design to comply fully with all COSHH requirements. "The hopper feeds the boiler automatically," says David Crosby; "it really works a treat, and Dustraction have been fantastic to work with. They were always here when they said they would be and the whole installation went through like clockwork. As always, Dustraction have been very communicative throughout the process ... we couldn't be more pleased!"
Dustraction’s new system at Touch Design is disposing of wood and panel waste from architectinspired interior projects destined for the most exclusive territories of London’s West End.
There was limited space for Dustraction and WWT to work with at Touch Design; with careful planning, Dustraction got the plant installed and working.

DUST EXTRACTION DCS Turns Up The Heat At Glyngary Innovative and award-winning Glyngary Joinery Ltd is benefiting from a new biomass heating system supplied by Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS). Glyngary is renowned for quality bespoke joinery manufacture; especially for its distinctive range of sash windows and casement windows and doors, which are manufactured in a wide range of natural woods. The family-owned company, established in 1985 by Colin Yates and now operated jointly by his sons Glyn and Gary Yates, undertakes all production at the company’s 19,000 sq ft facility near Warrington, Cheshire. In common with all joinery manufacturers, Glyngary Joinery creates a good deal of wood waste. Avoiding the need to dispose of this waste and instead use it to heat the business premises made sense in itself, but the DCS proposal also explained the financial benefits of the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme (RHI). This Government-funded scheme, which was launched in 2011 and managed by OFGEM, pays end users for every kW of heat generated for their business premises. DCS predicted that the company’s capital expenditure on a suitable system could be recovered in around 5 years through RHI payments, but the Government’s payback

commission the new installation, Gary Yates said: “We have had a long-standing relationship with DCS; they installed our existing extraction system and have taken care of maintenance and LEV testing for many years. We have always been impressed by their professional approach and the proposal DCS put forward for the new biomass system presented compelling economic reasons for going ahead with the investment.” Wood waste from the various machines and workstations in the factory continues to be extracted via the existing DCS filter unit but, rather than the collected wood chips, dust and shavings ending up in a waste trailer, the material is now transferred by means of a transport loop to a cyclone which is situated above a new storage silo. The waste is discharged pressure-free from the cyclone, via a rotary valve, and drops into the storage silo below. The silo itself incorporates a mechanical agitator to ensure a consistent flow of mixed waste to a screw conveyor, which in turn delivers the wood fuel through to the boiler room. Sight windows, arranged vertically up the side of

DUST EXTRACTION the silo, allow easy visual monitoring of wood waste levels. The boiler room houses the new DCS 300kW Biomass Boiler, along with the RHI metering units which provide a real-time readout of kilowatt hours of heat produced; providing Gary Yates with a constant indicator of the revenue being generated. The high efficiency, user-friendly boiler has automatic ignition, automatic heat exchange cleaning, and automatic deashing – all standard features which help to maximise efficiency and reduce downtime for maintenance. To minimise emissions from the burner, the flue is fitted with a fume scrubber which ensures the system performs well within local authority guidelines. To make most efficient use of the hot water generated by the biomass boiler, DCS installed 3 separate hot water loop systems. One of the 3 loops exclusively serves the spraying/drying room where two heat exchangers, independently controlled by room thermostats, maintain a constant even temperature throughout the working day. A second separately metered loop is routed through a series of 6 heat exchangers, strategically-sited above the remainder of the workshop area. This
Six heat exchangers ensure a consistent working temperature throughout the factory.
flexible, efficient use of the boiler ensures both the drying room and workshop are always maintained at optimum working temperatures. The third loop, connected to an externally-sited heat dissipater, is designed to operate in the unlikely event
that any excess heat is generated – this loop is not metered, so receives no RHI payback, but the system is finely tuned to the factory’s requirements and the dissipater is rarely used. To provide Glyngary with the desired heating levels the boiler consumes up to 4 tonnes of wood waste each week during the cooler months of the year, but in the summer months this reduces to around 1 tonne. In winter, the factory doesn’t produce sufficient filtered waste to meet the demand of the boiler, but all waste wood off-cuts from the factory are collected and stored for future use. DCS supplied a highthroughput Schuko Off-Cut Shredder which is used to recycle the stored timber when it’s required for wood fuel. Additionally, Glyngary purchase around 20 tonnes of wood chips per year to augment the supply of fuel in winter – but even burning the bought in fuel returns a profit. Area Sales Manager for DCS, Ray Townley, adds: “DCS were delighted to be awarded this contract. The system is ideally suited to Glyngary’s requirements, and working with Gary and the team is always a pleasure.”

WOODWASTE Wood Waste Technology Sponsors 3Peaks2Wheels Challenge For Charity Wood Waste Technology, one of the leading UK manufacturers in waste to energy systems, based in Stafford, is sponsoring a charity challenge that involves not only climbing the three highest mountains in the UK, but also a 500 mile cycle ride between each of the 3 destinations, starting in Scotland, via the Lake District to finish in Wales. Kurt Cockroft, MD of Wood Waste Technology, heard about the fundraising attempt and immediately offered to become a corporate sponsor of the race, providing financial support as well as providing the team’s sports kit and assisting with marketing the event to help the team raise as much money as possible. Kurt heard the story of Joe Ellement, a Stafford boy who survived a horse kick that caused horrific injuries to the top of his skull when he was only young. Now age 22, Joe realises how very lucky he’s been to have not suffered any on-going brain injuries, despite being critically ill at the time and needing titanium plates to keep his head together. As a result, Joe’s on a mission to raise £10,000 for Headway (South Staffordshire), a
local charity that helps to promote understanding of all aspects of the devastating effects of brain injury, and provide information, support and services to survivors, their families and carers. Joe and his family have been running a series of charity events throughout 2016 leading up to their ultimate event in September, the ‘3Peaks 2 Wheels’ challenge. The team started training last October, as they estimate that in addition to the 3 days it will take them to climb Ben Nevis, Scarfell and Snowdon, they’ll need to cycle in excess of 100 miles a day over 4 days, in order to give them enough rest time before getting back in the saddle the next morning. Joe says: “I was so lucky to survive an accident like that without any side-effects. It’s going to be stressful doing the challenge as we’ve got to be able to do the distance in the 4 days we’ve allocated. In training, we’re trying to cover 14 miles per hour, which might be faster than we’ll be able to go during the actual event as we’ve no idea what the conditions will be like on the rural roads. I’m so grateful for everyone who is joining or supporting us on
this challenge, including Wood Waste Technology. It’s a big commitment, with all the training and planning. It’s definitely taking over all our lives, but it’ll be so worth it to raise £10,000 for such an important charity.” Joe’s dad, Lyndon is joining his son on the challenge, and there’s also a 3-man support crew involved in the event, including Joe’s mom who’ll be responsible for setting up refreshment and food stations every 25 miles. Kurt Cockroft says: “I’ve heard that apparently there’s an estimated one million people in the UK living with the long-term effects of a brain injury, who are having to deal with such life-changing situations whilst trying to rebuild their lives around their illness. Joe’s very lucky to have survived such a horrendous accident, and we’re proud to be helping him raise money for Headway, to help those less fortunate.” To find out more, and donate to help Joe and his team achieve its goal, please visit https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/3pe aks2wheels
