Introduction The importance of the teacher of Religious Education in our secondary schools cannot be exaggerated. In every respect, it is a challenging task and requires not only knowledge and understanding of the subject but deep faith and conviction as well as a genuine concern for the well being of every student. It is a privileged task that carries enormous responsibility because for many students, the RE teacher is the visible representative of the Catholic Church. In order to support you, I am very pleased to welcome and introduce this second edition of the Teacher’s Book ‘The Way’ which accompanies the Student’s Book and DVD. These form part of the series ‘The Way, the Truth & the Life’ which has now been published for 3 – 14 year olds. This programme is based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Religious Education Curriculum Directory for Catholic Schools published by the Bishops’ Conference. God calls all people to himself so, in the unit on other faiths, the students will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of them and will be encouraged to build bonds of friendship with many young people they will come to know. ‘The Way’ builds on Book 6 of the primary series and ensures continuity and progression. It is possible that not all pupils from primary schools will have used Book 6 so there is a wide range of Power Point presentations, flipcharts for Smart and Promethean interactive whiteboards, audio recordings and worksheets on the DVD to supplement and complement the content of this second edition. On the DVD, you will also find a great variety of assessment tasks mapped to the Levels of Attainment in Religious Education in Catholic Schools and Colleges, Bishops’ Conference Department for Catholic Education and Formation. The Teacher’s and Student’s Books and DVD have been produced by the Teachers’ Enterprise in Religious Education, that is, by teachers from different parts of the country working in a collaborative manner and pooling their expertise. I thank Fr. Herbert Alphonso SJ most warmly for all the work he has put into the theological notes, the study sessions in Rome and for the great encouragement he continually gives to the teachers involved in the Enterprise. I trust that all who use this Teacher’s Book, Student’s Book, DVD and the supporting website www.tere.org will be helped in a clear and direct way in the important task of enabling students to learn about the Catholic faith and to respond to its invitation with growing faith and generosity.

Reflect on who God is and how He makes Himself known to us.

[Note: In an attempt to simplify the text in the Student’s Book Abram’s name is called Abraham. In Genesis 17:5 God changed Abram’s name to Abraham because he was making him father of many nations].

PPP ‘Getting to know people’: Starting point: Think of how we get to know people. How do we learn to trust them? How well can we get to know them? Does it take time?

Explain: Each person finds God or God finds them in a unique way that is special to them. A starting point for many is the beauty and order of the universe. We have only to take time to study its beauty to be led to the belief that it must have a designer. Watching the sunrise or sunset can be a deeply spiritual experience as the Psalmist says, ‘The heavens proclaim the glory of God’ (Ps. 18).

PPP: ‘The Glory of God’ use as a silent meditation. You may wish to play very soft music while watching it. This PPP should help pupils to observe the beauty of God’s creation and prepare the way for our real starting point: REVELATION and FAITH.

Explain to pupils that they are now going to learn a new way of thinking about what they learn in RE – it is called theology. They will have to think in a deeper way and look for meanings that are not immediately obvious.

1. Revelation and Faith

Faith Faith is like absolutely trusting what someone says is true even though there is no proof. We generally say we have faith in someone when we trust and have confidence in them. But faith in God is a supernatural gift. Explain: the difference between revelation, to reveal something of ourselves to others and Divine Revelation.

Divine Revelation is God’s own ‘unveiling’ or revealing of God and God’s plan for us. It is a gift from God. It gives us a share in God’s divine knowledge. It prepares us to share in God’s divine life. We are going to see how this plan unfolds in the life of Abraham who, because of his absolute trust in God, is known as our father in faith.

Discuss: Why do you think that the writer has put Revelation and Faith together? • Help pupils to understand that God will only reveal Himself to those who have faith. Revelation calls for a response in faith. • Step by step, God gradually unfolds His plan to people who have absolute faith and trust in Him. Why do you think Abraham’s faith needed to be educated and challenged? • God had great plans for Abraham but He had to be sure that Abraham was ready to respond in faith to each challenge God sent. In this way, Abraham’s faith grew. • It is a little bit like a parent starting to give a child tasks to do. The more reliable the child became the more the parents would give him/her responsibility.

Additional activities WS 4 ‘Big Questions’: this could be used as a ‘starter’. WS 5 ‘Faith Journey’ this could be used as a meditation and also as an activity to help pupils to focus on their own faith journey. It is also a preparation for the next Key Learning Objective [KLO].

1. Revelation and Faith

Reflect on how Abraham’s journey of faith in God began. Think about our relationship with God. Starting point: Invite pupils to think of their faith journey. Were there difficulties along the way? Was it difficult to trust God? Where did they find help? What can they do to strengthen their faith? Do they know of any inspirational people whose example strengthens their faith?

WS 6: ‘Faith Journey’ (for less able pupils). This could also be used for a starter as it will help to focus the pupils’ minds.

Little by little, God was helping Abraham to know the part God was playing in his life. Abraham had to come to an understanding of ONE GOD – rather than the polytheistic concept of many gods. This was a totally new concept because belief in polytheism was widespread at that time. God challenged Abraham so that his faith would grow. God’s promises were realised in the distant future so they required great faith on Abraham’s part.

God took the initiative; He acted first. God broke into Abraham’s life and said: “Leave your country and your kindred (relations) and your father’s house and go to the land that I will show you” (Gen. 12:1). I am giving you no details, God seems to say; I am not telling you for how long, or what kind of people you will meet. In faith, Abraham left and did as God had asked him. Abraham made the complete act of faith: always putting his trust in God. God comes back to educate and challenge Abraham’s faith over and over again. Each time Abraham’s relationship with God grows stronger and God is able to give him extraordinary blessings.

Additional activities Start to build up KEY WORDS, pupils learn their meaning and then play ‘Just a minute’: a pupil picks a key word from a box and explains the meaning of it within one minute.
