Hello and what a start to the F1 season! Lucky Alonso, eh? It goes to show how well the monocoque chassis works in providing protection for the driver. Lewis was lucky too, holding onto his second place. Not sure on the Channel 4 coverage yet, I’m missing Suzie Perry, but we’ll wait and see how Steve Jones works out. Richard O’Rourke covers the full race and of course his passion, the WRC and the returning MotoGP, read all about it on page 16. We’ve found our winner of all our back issues - is it you? Find out on page 20. We finish our Top Ten Volvo estates on page 12 and jump into the future with a look at flying motorbikes that could be the next big thing. We feature the best and also some strange cars from the Geneva Motor Show held in March and have a fantastic Reader’s Ride in the form of Tow Mater. 2080bhp AF10 Hybrid. Arash Motor Company have shown their AF10 supercar at the Geneva Motor Show with a new hybrid powertrain that the firm is calling ‘Warp Drive’. The AF10 was launched in 2009 from the firm and now the improved version boasts 2080bhp. 900bhp comes from a 6.2-litre supercharged V8 and the remaining 1180bhp comes from four electric motors, one driving each wheel. There are five gearboxes on the car, since there are five ‘Warp Drive units’; four electric motors and the V8 and each of these gets their own gearbox. 0-62mph is quoted at less than 3 seconds, with a top speed of more than 201mph. The new AF10 hybrid is due on sale later this year at £1.1 million. The AF10 is also available as a non-hybrid V8 for £350,000 and as a Hybrid Racer for £1.2 million.

Andy Mac of Hot Rod España/Hillbilly Hot Rods has been in the hot rod and custom scene for 25 years as a hobby and is now trying to make it into a business. The latest build project is his scale replica of Tow Mater from the Disney ‘Cars’ movie.

It’s the only scale hand built steel replica in Europe and built from a Land Rover Discovery chassis and took him just under 4 months to complete.

Andy does regular trips back to the UK for engine and gearbox parts for all types of V8's, including normal and race tuned. Mater is heading back to the UK later this month and will be seen at many of the shows and cruises around the south of England. Their next project will either be a 1966 Batmobile or the Pink Panther car, but they will undertake any weird and wonderful work / projects that anyone may want.

They also have their own car club: Moonshiners Car Club Costa Blanca, which meet on the last Sunday of every month at the Meroil gas station in Catral, off junction 733 on the AP7. 2015 Formula One The new qualifying format was a disaster and, surprise surprise, has been scrapped for the rest of the year. The Mercs still filled the first two slots on the grid in Australia with the Ferraris on the second row followed by a mixture of Red Bulls (Tag Heuer badged Renault power) and Toro Rossos (2015 Ferrari power). When the race started the Ferraris blasted off the line and took the lead with Vettel ahead of Raikkonen. All looked good for an Italian win until Alonso in his McLaren tripped over the Haas of Gutierrez and barrel rolled in the gravel trap before coming to rest upside down against the barrier. Alonso was lucky to escape uninjured and the latest news is that the engine, gearbox and monocoque all survived the massive impact.

Fernando Alonso crashes The race was stopped while the debris was cleared away and all the cars returned to the pits where they had free choice as to which tyres they would use for the remaining laps. Ferrari chose the soft tyres which meant having to stop again while Mercedes chose the medium compound which would get them to the finish. Logic would have said that the choice should have been the other way around with Ferrari having track position and Mercedes having to gamble but the decision was made and it was the German team who got it right. Rosberg led the way home ahead of Hamilton and Vettel with Raikkonen having retired with a turbo fire and while the finishing order looks familiar it does not tell the whole story and the fact is that Ferrari are on the pace and could well make a fight of the championship. Daniel Ricciardo finished fourth for a surprisingly quick Red Bull with Massa fifth in a surprisingly slow Williams. Star of the show was Roman Grosjean who was sixth in the brand new Haas, a points finish being beyond expectations for the fledgling American team. MotoGP Qatar was the venue for the opening round of the Moto GP championship and the news from practice and qualifying was the straight line speed of the Ducatis. Yamaha still had the edge on lap time ahead of Honda but the Dukes were looking good to upset the usual Jap battle. Iannone was the

favourite to take the fight to the Yamahas but he fell off and so it was left to Dovizioso to uphold Italian honour. The race was a fairly processional affair with Lorenzo taking a comfortable victory but Dovi’s Ducati was able to get the better of Marquez on the Honda to finish a well deserved second. Rossi challenged for a while but had to settle for fourth while the Suzukis were quicker than expected but still a little off the ultimate pace. The 10 mph speed advantage which the Ducatis hold will tell on the faster tracks and, unless the others catch up, life could become interesting later in the season.

World Rally Championship The World Rally Championship held it’s third round in Mexico and while it lacked the drama of last year’s event when Ott Tanak went for a swim it was, nevertheless, an exciting affair with Jari Matti Latvala taking a well deserved win ahead of championship leader Sebastian Ogier, both driving VW Polos. Latvala started 7th on the road reflecting his championship position and benefitted from stages that had been cleared of loose gravel by the previous runners. Ogier had the worst of the conditions but gradually climbed the leaderboard and was satisfied with second place and also had the bonus of an extra three points from winning the power stage. Dani Sordo was initially third but was later demoted to fourth having incurred a penalty due to an admin error by his Hyundai team. Mads Ostberg was the beneficiary and took third place in his Ford with Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) and Ott Tanak (Dmack Ford) following on. Neuville and Mikkelsen both retired with mechanical failure following accidents and Citroen, who have a limited WRC programme, did not take part.

He was at ease with the language and fully immersed in the culture. He was a founder member of the Phoenix Car Club here on the Costa Blanca and served two terms as a Vocal Events Manager. Every drive that Eric prepared was meticulously researched and his knowledge of local history was astounding. He preferred drives to be on rural roads and not motorways, and where possible to include a cultural item of interest such as the Muslim Graves, Ancient Water Wheels or the Submarine Pens at Cartagena. His collection of cars over the years included a Jaguar XK120, a Fiat Barchetta, a VW Karmann Ghia convertible and his Citroen 2CV van 'Olive'. Our thoughts are with his wife Ann, his family and many friends.

Lotus on Two Wheels by Jill Carter

The Lotus marque is well known for producing race and road cars over the past 60 years but for the first time the badge will soon grace a motorcycle. The C-01 motorcycle is not designed, engineered or produced by Group Lotus plc but is the result of a collaboration between Group Lotus, Kodewa and The Holzer Group. The project was led by Dr Colin Kolles of Kodewa. Lotus have partnered Kodewa, a German autoracing team, to produce a top-end motorcycle that is rumoured to have a price tag in excess of $140,000. This amazing machine will be launched as a limited-edition of 100 units and will be road-legal. Its creator is Daniel Simon a former Bugatti designer who is well known for his automotive designs which the reader may have spied in several Hollywood films. His Bubbleship featured in the Tom Cruise movie “Oblivion”. The German Racing team Kodewa have been given a licence to design, engineer and produce the C-01 by Group Lotus plc. Kodewa are well known in racing circles having participated in the FIA World Endurance Championship, the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters as well as the European Le Mans series. Indeed the original idea to create the C-01 was thought of by Kodewa's Dr Colin Kolles who wished to produce a bike “that wasn't just great to ride but represents a piece of art in motion”. He feels that this bike brings to the market “a unique combination of both state of the art technology with a truly jaw-dropping aesthetic”.

Commenting on the C-01 Günther Holzer, CEO of Holzer Group said: “I was one of the first people to ride it and I have to say I was very impressed. Together we have found that delicate balance between raw, aggressive power and breathtaking handling. The team has created something very special, it looks incredible, it sounds fantastic but above all, the ride is sensational. I’m very happy.” There are three colour schemes available for the aerospace quality steel, titanium and carbo-fibre chassis; black with copper finishes, silver with vivid red and blue stripes and the classic Lotus colourway of green and yellow. It is possible to customise the finish at a price...? Technical details for the motorcycle are given below for those who wish to know more about the construction.
