We’ve great news to start this month as we announce the opening of Ferrari Land, Spain on April 7th. As regular visitors to PortAventura we have been following the project with interest and are looking forward to checking it out for ourselves. We know it is unlikely be as good as Ferrari World in Dubai, but it is easier (and cheaper) to get to and houses Europe’s tallest rollercoaster. Ferrari seem to have sorted out their Formula One cars as well this season, their pace equalling that of the Mercedes in the first race. You can read Richard O’Rourke’s report on the race on page 16. David Hudson gives some great advice on getting your classic car through a Spanish MOT (ITV), so be sure to read it before you go. Bruce Rowbotham has written an interesting article on the land speed record, see page 12 and Richard makes us laugh with his memories of his time as a motorsport photographer. We’ve big money in the final part of our Top Ten as we count down the most expensive cars sold at auction - and yes Ferraris are featured once again in this issue. Detroit Electric Sports Car. The Lotus Elise-based Detroit Electric SP:01 looks on course to make production due to a new £1.5 billion deal with the Far East Smarter Energy Group of China. The model uses lithium ion battery packs that will give a range of 180 miles and take four hours to fully charge. Power output from the electric motor is rated at 281bhp with 166lb ft of torque. The SP:01 is claimed to have a top speed of 155mph and a 0-60mph time of 3.9 seconds. Initial prices were said to be £100,500, although the final price is yet to be confirmed. Detroit Electric plans for an electric SUV that’ll arrive in 2018 and another model two years later. The ambitious company aims to be selling 100,000 electric vehicles worldwide by 2020, made at their site in Leamington Spa in the UK.

Top Cop Car. Dubai police have added a Bugatti Veyron to their group of 14 supercars, which include a Lamborghini Gallardo, Aston Martin One-77, a Lamborghini Aventador and Ferrari FF. The line of cars was launched in 2013 to help improve the public image of the police force. The vehicles are mainly used to drive around tourist areas as a marketing tool.

Make Your Own. When Europe’s largest postal service, Deutsche Post AG couldn’t find a zero-emission delivery van that met its needs, it bought a startup and developed one. The StreetScooter is a boxy, bare-bones van that has no air conditioning, radio or even a passenger seat! It has a top speed of 80km/h and is proving so successful for the German company that they may start selling the vehicles. They plan to produce 10,000 e-vans annually starting this year and aim to electrify its own global fleet of 92,000 vans. This switch away from diesel comes in light of some cities banning diesel vehicles or taking other steps to cut emissions.

I Feel The Need For Speed by Bruce Rowbotham Many of us have driven at 100mph either legally or illegally, whilst a few of us have even broken through 200mph at the wheel of one of the handful of supercars that can be bought by a lottery winner. Once behind the wheel there are parts of Germany where you can take it to the limit in the pursuit of a personal best. At 100mph you are covering a mile every 36 seconds and 146 feet every second, so there's plenty going on. Speed has always fascinated us, in 1909 a 21 litre Benz was timed at 115mph in the first electronic timed run over a measured mile. By the 1930's the limit was being pushed ever higher by Malcolm Campbell, George Eyston and finally John Cobb who achieved 369mph in 1939. In the years that followed the Second World War interest in land speed records waned, although Malcolm Campbell's son Donald did manage to raise the record to 403mph in 1964 before his death in 1967 whilst in pursuit of the Water Speed Record that would have made him the holder of both records simultaneously. For the next 20 years the Bonneville Salt Flats in America saw the Land Speed Record being incrementally raised to 630mph by jet powered cars in the hands of American drivers. Then in the true style of the “Plucky Brit,” Richard Noble entered the fray in 1983 and at Black Rock Desert raised the record to 634mph in his car Thrust 2, a record that stood for 15 years until 1997, when fellow Brit, Andy Green well and truly smashed the record when he achieved 763mph in Thrust SSC and the first supersonic run.

Thrust 2 If you are a speed freak who has just won the lottery and you want the ultimate car, then you would probably buy a Bugatti Veyron, a car recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the fastest production car in the world with an average top speed recorded as 268mph with it's engine uprated from the standard 1000 horsepower to 1200hp. The Veyron model is now discontinued but Bugatti have already produced the prototype for their new car, the Bugatti Chiron with an engine producing 1500hp. This car will be faster than a current Formula One car and as with the original Veyron, new and complex solutions to hitherto unknown aerodynamic and engineering problems have to be found, all the while keeping the car road legal. Listening to Andy Green describing Thrust SSC and the record run in 1997 is truly amazing, Stark facts and statistics can be boring, but not these, even to a non petrol-head. Thrust SSC is powered by 2 Rolls Royce Spey engines producing 100,000 horsepower. The car is 54 feet long and 12 feet wide, weighing 10 tons. Even now no tyres exist that are capable of withstanding the loadspeeds generated, so it runs on 4 solid wheels. The bodywork is optimised for speed and by virtue of its weight, the initial acceleration seems slow. Whereas the Veyron will go from standstill to 100mph in 4.7 seconds, Thrust SSC needs 20 seconds to reach 100mph but thereafter the gains are unbelievable. Adding another 100mph every 4 seconds. So from 200mph to 700mph takes just another 20 seconds. In less than a minute the vehicle goes from rest to supersonic.
Black Rock Desert is made up of fine alluvial dried mud, if you pick a piece up it crumbles like fine dust but overall the surface is slightly more compliant for the solid wheels than Bonneville's salt. The course used for the record attempt is 14 miles long: 6.5 miles for acceleration, a measured mile in the middle and 6.5 miles to slow down. Andy Green covered the measured mile in just 4.69 seconds meaning he was covering over 1000 feet per second over the ground. At this speed powerful shock waves were being generated in front of the vehicle effectively digging up the desert surface by the ram of air pressure. As a consequence the visible wheel tracks left during acceleration were replaced by a single ploughed trace 12 feet wide, before they reappeared again as the vehicle slowed. On October 15 1997 Andy Green made his 2 way runs through the measured mile at an average speed of 766.035mph - equalling Mach 1.02 thus breaking the sound barrier. In Gerlach, the nearest village although situated 10 miles away, the sonic boom broke plates and took pictures off walls, even setting off fire extinguishers in the local school. A record had been created. History was made. Thrust SSC is now on display at the Spirit of Speed Gallery at the Coventry Transport Museum. Meanwhile Richard Noble and his team are still pursuing greater goals. His Bloodhound SSC project aims to break the 1000mph barrier in 2018.

Members and guests of The Jaguar Enthusiast Club on the Costa Blanca gathered together on the 5th March for the second event of 2017 at the “Clubhouse” of the La Marquesa Campo de Golf situated between the villages of Rojales & Quesada. Members unfamiliar with the location were consolidated at Restaurant La Herradura in Los Montesinos for morning coffee prior to moving on in a 17 Jaguar car convoy to the club house at La Marquesa Campo de Golf to join the other 10 cars already there.

A fantastic display of 27 shining timeless examples of British Automobile Engineering graced the restaurants car park in a spectacle of gleaming grace & pace, just a beautiful sight to see. Our record of 90 members at a local event was very nearly broken this time. On arrival, the 88 members & guests were treated to a Cava reception, prior to selecting one of the three outside seating areas to join their respective friends for a pleasant discussion accompanied by a range of beverages before enjoying lunch.

Giving Your Classic A Better ITV Chance
I came across a very old article about giving your car a better MOT chance. This was drawn up by ESSO Research Centre near my home town of Abingdon. With 30 years experience of owning a classic in Spain of which 14 years were dealing with problems of expats I thought an article on hints and tips on taking the ITV (MOT) for a classic might help. Not all ITV Stations are classic friendly and when I have spoken to ITV stations that were causing a problem for our members the engineers always say that they do not want classics on the road prefering them in museums. I recommend the Redovan ITV because it is classic friendly and my engineering friend there is a classic owner who has helped all the people that I have sent there as well as myself. There is no standard national ITV test in Spain the automonous communities have their own standard test. You have to take the ITV test in the region that your vehicle is registered in. If you don't then you may face a

Any alteration that has been made to the vehicle must be registered with Trafico including a tow bar. In the 90s I failed the ITV because all the tyres on my 600 were .05 over the ITV width specification and I had to replace all the tyres to pass. So check your tyres for tread, age and pressure that helps with the braking test. A good tip from the
article is to change the engine oil before taking the test. This will give you a better chance to pass the emissions test but use a good correct oil. If your classic only travels a short distance occassionally then the systems may be blocked up and will fail the emissions. Either do a long trip to clear it or put an additive in with the fuel to clear the system. Check all the lights

Check under the carpets, under the car and the exhuast for penetrating rust. A Chapa (body shop) will repair this for you cheaply. Check that the shock absorbers spring back heathly when you push down and the seat belts are not frayed. Consider changing your classic to an electric ignition. These can fit into the distributor and cost from 40€. The result is more power, better consumption and emissions and will help to prevent overheating. Win! Win! Another tip in this climate is to use Castrol Valvemaster Plus with your petrol. Again this will help with emissions, better power, consumption and overheating. Only use coolant or waterless coolant in your radiator to help prevent overheating in the Spanish hot weather. By David Hudson.

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2017 Formula One Ferrari are back! After a winless season in 2016 the red cars were on the pace in Melbourne for the Australian GP and Sebastian Vettel produced the goods in the race to beat the Mercs fair and square. Hamilton led from pole position but Vettel shadowed him all the way and when Lewis pitted Seb stayed out and performed a Schumacher like overcut, banged in a couple of hot laps and emerged from his pit stop in the lead. Hamilton was racing against Verstappen which held him up but the consensus (Niki Lauda and Toto Wolff included) was that Ferrari had the quicker car anyway and deserved their win. Valtteri Bottas drove steadily to third place while Raikkonen was fourth ahead of Verstappen, Massa, Perez, Sainz, Kvyat and Ocon. Poor Daniel Ricciardo had a lousy weekend at his home Grand Prix. He crashed on Saturday during qualifying and had to take a penalty as a result of a gearbox change. Then he got stuck in sixth gear on the formation lap, started from the pit lane two laps down and then retired with engine problems. Things can only improve for the smiling Aussie. McLaren did better than expected and
Alonso held tenth place until two laps from the finish when suspension problems caused him to fall back. Things are looking ominous for the once great McLarenHonda partnership and one wonders how tenable the relationship is and, indeed, how long Alonso’s patience will hold out. MotoGP In the first race of the season in Qatar, the start was delayed for 40 minutes after a rain shower in the desert and the riders felt that the damp track was dangerous. Wet was ok because they had tyres to deal with it, but not damp! Anyway it was Moto GP rookie Johann Zarco who took the lead on his Tech 3 Yamaha and he led impressively until falling off on lap 6. Then Iannone (Suzuki) fell off while dicing for the lead and it was left to Andrea Dovozioso (Ducati) and the two factory Yamahas of Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi to fight it out for victory. Champion, Marc Marquez too was involved for a while but fell back because he was on the wrong tyres. Viñales and Dovi exchanged the lead many times before the Yamaha finally pulled away with Rossi seemingly happy to settle for third.

WRC Rally Mexico was all about Kris Meeke and the most dramatic finish ever to a rally. Ever! Meeke led by 37 seconds from World Champion Seb Ogier as they entered the final stage and all he had to do was get to the end without drama but Meeke being Meeke could not do things the easy way. Oh no. With just over a kilometre to go he entered a right-hander too fast and flew off the road through a fence and down into a car park. On the way he struck the tail of a VW Passat and then proceeded to circulate the car park in panic looking for a way out. His co-driver, Paul Nagle, kept the cool and guided the shaken driver through a hole in the fence and back onto the rally track. He got to the end of the stage and, despite the delay, still won the event by 13 seconds. In the meantime his Citroen team were watching live TV coverage as were the other drivers and the expressions on their faces were priceless. The team went from shock to dismay to relief and delight in a matter of seconds and Meeke himself was speechless at the end. The only words he could utter were “I’m a lucky, lucky boy”. Oh, by the way, Ogier was second and Neuville was third. Have a look at the You Tube coverage if you want a good laugh and a lesson in how not to win a rally. Chris Meeke

Ride 37: Test Ride BMW K1300R Beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say. That may be true, but the "beauty" I´m beholding when looking at the BMW appears to be of the "inside" variety if you know what I mean? This bike not only looks like it fell out of the Ugly Tree, it also seems to have hit every branch on the way down! LOL!! OK, seriously. It´s not Honda CX500 ugly, remember them? I mean it´s nickname was the "Plastic maggot"!! But the BMW K1300R is definitely something you have to "get used to", It´s looks are a bit black, two wheeled Transformer, if you know what I mean? It does exude an aura of menace though, of power and purpose. The more you look at it the more delicious, detailing you find. Cast alloy frame rails, "squinty" xenon headlights, the single sider swinging arm

(with beautifully made crash bungs!)...not sexy like a Ducati..but strong and impressive in a very Bavarian way. At least on the right hand side anyway. But the shaft drive means the left is Butt ugly by comparison! The whole bike is dripping with "ooer shiny bits" not Harleyesque chrome, but Bad Boy black carbon fibre! The Akropovic exhaust (OEM) gives a lovely but legal bark as you press the starter button, and you immediately get a sense of "something wicked this way comes!". The high and wide bars with standard heated grips, let the controls "fall easily to hand" (thank you test ride cliche number 104! LOL!) whilst the clocks are modern, clear and well placed. Once astride the "beast", the seat is thin but well padded/shaped, the thing sure looks a lot better from there! It feels thin waisted, light and extremely well balanced. The four cylinder 1293 cc twin cam that has been breathed on by the same folks responsible for the crazy-fast Buggatti Veyron makes about 175bhp. It may not seem a lot to you "kids" out there nowadays, but this is a naked "Roadster" weighing only 228kgs remember!! With a "limited"?! top speed of 155mph, it crosses a standing quarter in just under 10 seconds!! Whilst managing 34mpg giving a tank range of 170 miles. So, off we go then. What a surprise! The motor is full of torque but not intimidating as I´d expected at all! The ride is "cushion of air" comfortable thanks to the electronically adjusted suspension. The Duolever front end means no fork dive when braking etc and can seem a bit starnge if you´ve not experienced it before, but the tyres give great grip inspiring confidence and a slightly heavier right hand! Making progress is easy through the 6 speed box (quick shifter as standard!). With no worries about tyre set up (courtesy of the tyre pressure monitoring system!?) and the handling being/ power etc being kept under control by the electrickery (ABS, TCS, TPM, ASC) The animalistic howl from the Akropovic "on cam", soon had me casting a quick glance in the adequate mirrors to see my companion (and owner of said BMW!!) ..rapidly shrinking in size!? A look at the speedo had me hauling on the 4 pot Nissins on the huuuuuuuuuge brake rotors!! As the stupendous brakes retarded velocity from "I´m going to Jail!!", I slipped on one of the miniscule indicators (yet another nice touch!) and pulled in. And gingerly handed the keys back whilst looking appropriately sheepish/remorseful! BMW...BIG MAD and WICKED! Try one, just don´t go past any speed cameras! A Funny Thing Happened.... by Richard O’Rourke In a new series of articles Richard O’Rourke recalls some amusing incidents which occurred during his time as roving photographer and reporter for Motoring News in the 1980s and ‘90s.
1983 EUROPEAN GP AND TOM’S KARTING COUP Last month I told the story of the tyre and the customs officer and the British GP at Brands Hatch. Well, it was back to Brands Hatch again the following year but this time for the European GP which was added to the calendar in September while the British GP took place at Silverstone in July. The race was remarkable in that it was the only time that both Toleman cars finished in the points and remember folks that in those days points were scored only down to sixth place. Derek Warwick and Bruno Giacomelli drove the Hart powers cars and once more the rate of attrition was high with just 15 of the 26 cars making it to the finish. The race was won by Nelson Piquet in a Brabham (a team owned and run by Bernie Ecclestone) with Alain Prost second and Nigel Mansell third in Renault and Lotus respectively. Andrea de Cesaris was fourth in the Alfa Romeo and I can still recall the glorious wail of the engine to this day. I had given up the camping and this year decided to stay in the luxury of an hotel along with the crew from RTE TV and a few other friends. The traffic jams and slow progress to and from the race was a small price for a comfort-
able bed and an on-site bar in comparison to the relatively mundane though fun conditions in the campsite. I was joined each day by my good friend, mechanic and navigator, Dick O’Brien and his 12 year old son Tom. Having trekked around the circuit for most of the practice day we eventually settled into some seats in the grandstand at Paddock Hill bend and it wasn’t long before Tom became bored and begged his father for the price of a go at the junior karting track which was right behind the stand. Dick parted with the few quid and told Tom to rejoin us when he was finished with his karting exploits. A long time passed with no sign of Tom returning so we decided to search him out and there he was, still circulating on the track. Now the deal was that the winner of each race would get a free go in the next one and young O’Brien was winning race after race much to the consternation of the other kids and indeed the chap who was running the show. The other kids (and their fathers) even complained that Tom’s kart was quicker than the rest and so he was told to change but he continued winning.

Dick was beginning to think that he had a young star on his hands and that any moment Bernie would show up with a million pound contract ready to be signed but the explanation was much simpler but nonetheless ingenious. Tom was dragged ashore and, with a nonchalance that would stay with him for the rest of his life, told us the secret. The karts were restricted by means of a block positioned under the throttle pedal so that it could only be depressed so far. Tom overcame this by putting his foot behind the throttle pedal and lifting the cable with his toe, thus achieving full unrestricted throttle and disappearing down the track while the others scratched their helmets in amazement. The little trophy (only one) was proudly carried back to the car and to this day sits on a shelf in the family garage. Tom O’Brien, multiple winner at Brands Hatch. Not surprisingly Tom became a mechanic and after qualifying spent a couple of years with the Arden Formula 3 team in the UK before returning to Ireland to take over the business when Dick retired. Dick O’Brien was well known in Cork as being the man who could fix or service anything. He built his own Ford Special in the late fifties which he raced until quite recently and it was not unusual to find a Ferrari, Porsche or other exotica in his modest garage in Rockgrove. He specialised in looking after the oldies and loved fixing cars that were older than he was. Apples don’t fall far from trees and young Tom had clearly inherited his father’s mechanical prowess and ability to overcome problems.
