Editors Notes:
The summer events have started in the UK and we have a feature from our reporter, Jill Carter, who attended the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Moving Motor Show earlier last month. See pages 14 and 15. Clare Lawrence has been chatting to Ben Edwards for our Under The Spotlight feature. Formula One fans will recognise his voice, if not his face, since he is the lead F1 commentator for the BBC. Still flying the British flag, we have the last 5 of our Top Ten British cars and have a look at Overfinch, the company who enhance Range Rovers. Very British James Bond has been spotted riding a motorbike, well the actor Daniel Craig, while filming for the next Bond film. We compare him with the most iconic movie motorbike rider: Mr Steve McQueen. Can Daniel Craig look as cool as him? See page 21 for our comparison. We’ve got more car art, again in London, this time it’s BMW’s turn. Bringing us back to Spain, we feature 3 supercars Made In Spain and of course have a look at the local club and event scene. With more advertisers than ever and even more cars for sale, you can find it all inside your Costa Car Trader. Happy motoring! Professor

New Vision For Compact Vehicles B Pillar Less
This is the new B-Max, the soon to be replacemnet of the Fusion. It's a Mini MPV with sliding rear doors which are normally found on full size or compact MPVs, such as Ford's C-Max range. The clever detail is that there are absolutely no B pillars, this makes climbing in and out an easy excercise, especially for their older clientele.
Engine Options Include Ford’s New 1.0 Ecoboost
Easy Door Access 1.5 Metre Access

Sexy And I Know It
Just how can you better the brilliance that is the McLaren MP4-12C? Cut the roof off, of course. We like convertibles here at the Costa Car Trader and although this looks stunning, especially seen here in Volcano Red, will it be able to add some fun into the drive? The MP4-12C has been harshly criticised for being just too perfect and lacking a certain ‘je nais se quoi’. As expected, it has similar performance specs as the coupé: 0-62mph in 3.1 seconds, 0-100mph in 6.1 seconds (against the 12C’s 6.0 seconds). The top speed is just 3mph off of the coupé, at 204mph. Our favourite bit? The retractable hard top (RHT) or, as we like to call it, the roof. It can be lowered in less than 17 seconds and the best bit, it can be done while moving at a speed of up to 30kmph. You know you’re going to use that always when pulling away, well if you live here in sunny Spain. First deliveries are expected in November at a price of around 250.000€.

This mean-looking machine is the Aspid GT-21 Invictus and it comes out of Catalonia. Under the bonnet, there's 450bhp from the 4.4 litre V8 supplied by BMW. 0-60 is under three seconds, with thanks to a dry weight of under 1000kg. The top speed is 187mph. 250 are being planned each year, but no hint of the price tag yet. See the video of it in action on our website.
Also hailing from Catalonia, the Tramontana is hand-built, with only 12 being made a year. Power comes from a 5.5 litre twin-turbo V12 sourced from Mercedes-Benz. Top speed is limited to 202mph with 0-60 in 3.9 seconds. Priced at a cool half a million euros.
From Valencia, the GTA Spano is a stylish looking sportscar which has an 8.3 litre V10 with a staggering 820hp. The top speed is 217mph and 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. Only 99 will be built at a price of about 700,000â‚Ź.

Overfinch is a British company which specialises in enhancing Range Rovers. Founded in 1975 under the name Schuler, they have specialised in modifications to appearance and mechanicals. An Overfinched Range Rover is noticeably different from the standard versions and have recently become very popular with high profile celebrities. 1975 Overfinch started out as part of Schuler Presses Ltd and was founded by Arthur Silverton. Their first project was when they fitted four Dellorto carburettors to a standard Range Rover, along with external mods. They then installed a 4.4 litre Leyland P76 V8 into a normal Range Rover. 1978 They took advantage of the Welsh Rally to test a new Schuler/Ferguson gearbox along with testing what is now commonly known as anti-lock braking system (ABS). They also began development on the 5 speed manual and 3 speed automatic transmissions.
OVERFINCH
2003 The Overfinch 580S was launched and was the first Overfinch not to have a GM engine. Since then, they have been tuning the standard Jaguar V6 and V8 engines, rather than replacing them with Chevrolet blocks. 2005 Overfinch won the Ford “Special Recognition for Outstanding Achievement in Design” award for SuperSport styling.
Depending on the size of your wallet you can purchase a standard Range Rover Sport or Evoque and hand it over to Overfinch for a professional and attention to detail overhaul, or you could purchase one direct from them at a cost of anything from £50,000 to £100,000.
1981 A Range Rover fitted with the Schuler/Ferguson Formula gearbox, entered by Land Rover France, won the Paris-Dakar Rally. In the same year, Schuler equipped a long wheelbase Range Rover with a Jaguar V12 engine, and vented brakes were introduced. 1985 Overfinch was born after Schuler handed over control of the Range Rover division to the UK and thus re-named. Overfinch has enhanced every version of the Range Rover, and the Range Rover Sport. The company also produces a number of options, such as wheels, interiors and aerokits.

Bentley
Auction Fever This rare bright orange 1955 Aston Martin is expected to fetch around £2.5 million when it goes up for auction on August 17. It's an Aston Martin DB3S which has a 3 litre engine which gives around 210bhp. Only 21 were built. If it reaches this figure, it will put it on par with James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 which fetched £2.6 million in 2010. Two records were broken recently at the Bonham's sale at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. First up was a unique 100-yearold Silver Ghost, which sold for £4,705,500; making it the most expensive Rolls-Royce ever sold at auction. The car was originally bought in 1912 for about £1,000. Then, a 1929 Bentley was sold for a record-breaking £5million making it the most expensive British-made car ever sold at auction. The final figure was £5,042,000 smashing the previous British-car record of £3.5 million paid in 2007 for a 1904 Rolls-Royce. The Bentley was once owned and raced by Sir Henry 'Tiger Tim' Birkin. who set a lap record in the car at the Brooklands Outer Circuit in 1931 when it hit an amazing 137mph.
BMW Art Cars A collection of BMW Art Cars (1975-2010) designed by famous artists will take over an NCP car park in east London, as part of a London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts show. In total 16 BMWs, which have been shipped to the UK for the first time ever from Germany, will be exhibited over six floors of the car park in Shoreditch. Visitors will view the cars on each level including Level 5's “Masters of Pop”, with cars by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg. The BMW Art Car Collection first started when the American sculptor Alexander Calder designed a red, yellow and blue BMW racing car in 1975 for his friend, the French racing driver and auctioneer Hervé Poulain. The collection has grown to include its latest acquisition, Jeff Koons' 2010 brightly coloured stripy model. Robert Rauschenberg

Hand Gestures in a Car? Surely not? No, these are gestures and expressions that can control a car's function. A new gadget which is set to come on the market in two to three years, uses an infra-red sensor on the dashboard recognise the driver's facial expression and translate into a list of commands for the radio, Sat Nav, heating and mobile phone. The gestures, which are being tested before they are finalised, include a wink to turn the radio and music player on and off. Motorists can even make a phone call by making the 'lifting the receiver gesture' with their hand and dial by saying the name of the person they wish call. The air conditioning and heating is controlled by raising and lowering their left hand above the gear stick which has another computer sensor mounted inside. The technology means drivers would be able to control the functions inside the car without being distracted from the road. Hans Roth, director of technology at Harman which designed the system, said: 'It’s all about reducing distractions in the car. If you don’t have to take your hands off the wheel or look down then it’s obviously safer.'

With Clare Lawrence British motor racing commentator Ben Edwards has voiced television coverage for not only one, but many motorsports, from Formula One and Superleague Formula to the British Touring Car Championship. He has worked for the BBC, Eurosport, ESPN, ITV and F1 Digital+. He is now the main commentator for Formula One on the BBC, working alongside David Coulthard. Hi Ben! Thank you for taking time out to do this interview for the Costa Car Trader. You have been likened to F1 commentator Murray Walker, due to your enthusiasm and energy when commentating – Would you agree with this comparison? Hi Clare, I think that all commentators are unique and it’s difficult to compare one with another. I have massive respect for Murray and in fact at the British Grand Prix this year I worked alongside him for the first time in my career, which was a real honour. I do believe that passion and enthusiasm are vital ingredients of good commentary, and I am always hoping to infuse the viewer with some of the enjoyment that I feel when watching motorsport. Your first commentary position was with Tiff Needell – Was this the first time that you had met him and did you enjoy working with Tiff? I first met Tiff earlier that same year, 1987, when I was racing in a junior single seater formula myself, and he was reporting on the series for Top Gear. Combining journalism with driving racing cars was always a bit of a dream of mine, so he was someone I aspired to emulate, and it was a real pleasure to commentate with him. It seems funny now that I was the ‘expert’ commentator that day, because I had won the Championship for that type of car, and yet there I was sitting next to someone who had driven at Le Mans and in GP cars and knew far more than I did! I enjoyed working with him, and indeed we worked together as racing instructors on various events after that. You started your working life as a mechanic. Do you ever see any of the people that you worked with in those days? I was a mechanic in a Formula Ford team, a starter category where drivers first start becoming serious about chasing a career in the sport. One of the youngsters who worked on the same team as me is now the Team Manager at the Marussia F1 team, so we bump into each other at most of the GP’s. And one of the drivers that I worked with became -
one of my closest friends; he didn’t make it to F1, so he had to revert to his training as a dentist, and he sorts me out when I have toothache! 20 years broadcasting – You must have had some humorous moments. Can you tell me about one of them? When I was working for Eurosport, I would normally have to travel to their studios in Paris to do commentary on weekly magazine style programmes. One day the flights to Paris were messed up by fog, and time was ticking away to the start of my programme. My mother was still living near Gatwick, so I raced to her door, grabbed the telephone and started commentating from her living room while watching her TV as in the background she was shoving her friendly but excitable and loud Rottweiler dog back into the kitchen….It could have made a very strange soundtrack to a race. Do you take part in any sport other than motorsport? I used to run to keep fit, but nowadays I’m doing more yoga. My wife trained as a yoga teacher last year, and I really enjoy the combination of increased flexibility, strength and focus that doing yoga can give you.
Ben Edwards different places but I have my base in the UK and I have never lived long term in a different country. That’s not to say I might not do so in the future, though. For all the rainy summers and immigration queues at airports, I do love England but I am not blinkered into thinking it’s the only place in the world and there are plenty of advantages to being elsewhere. Let’s say I have an open mind. How old are your children and do you think that they might follow in your footsteps? They’re in their early twenties; my step daughter is an illustrator and is working in London, while my stepson is a natural born salesman. He loves cars and racing and he regularly goes on camping trips to race circuits both in the UK and on the Continent with his mates. He definitely has the gift of the gab, and could talk the hind legs off a donkey, but I’m not sure he’s going to follow in my footsteps…. Thank you again Ben and I hope that you continue to succeed with your career. Perhaps we can do this again!
I have read that you once thought of moving to America for your career, but decided to stay in England. What made you stay? I have 2 step children who are now both working, but at the time they were at school and it would have been very disruptive to their lives to have shifted to America. Also, I had already commentated F1 for Eurosport and I was hopeful that I would be able to do so again for another broadcaster, and that was less likely to happen in the States. I spend a lot of time in Spain. Is there a country, apart from England, that you feel you live in?
To see more about Ben, you can visit his Entreprix website at: http://www.entreprix.co.uk

The Moving Motor Show is now in its third year and many people believe that it is THE British Motor Show with a number of manufacturers using the venue to launch new cars. Many manufacturers offered potential clients a passenger ride up the famous hill climb course, later recognised by their huge grins.

by Jill Carter
Autotrader was in partnership with Goodwood in the organisation of this event and were very pleased with the reception that this year’s endeavour received from an enthusiastic public. John Quirk their editor-in-chief was keen to point out the strong interest in the British car market and the excitement that the launch of new models at a live event creates. The Moving Motor Show Pavilion was manned throughout the FoS but was no longer ‘Moving’.
The event encompasses many models of car in a limited space so a person looking to buy a car can, in many cases, see them moving as well as static and thus compare and contrast their characteristics. This often leads to a short list of cars with some that had not previously been considered an option. The stands and pavilions were busy with a deluge of enquiries however the manufacturers had prepared well and manned their show area with enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff.
Volvo chose the Moving Motor Show to launch the V40 which is the first production car with a pedestrian air bag. Volvo’s aim is that by 2020 no-one should be killed or seriously injured by a Volvo! That would certainly be a fantastic statistic but is it achievable? Good luck Volvo.
A Mazda MX-5Miata GT concept car wrapped by Creative FX was showcased by the car manufacturer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. If interest is generated there is a high probability that the car may progress to production.
A short walk across the track bridge up from the hill climb start line provided entry to the central area where the huge pavilions of Lotus, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota to name just a few were situated. The Mercedes-Benz display included their concept style coupé which is aimed at the successful executive. It is expected that the production car will be very similar to the concept car when it is launched. The next bridge allowed you to cross the track to where the Festival of Speed cars were displayed.

I think the secret is out! If you wish to get up close and personal with the Festival of Speed cars and some of their drivers, this is the day to go. Tickets at a reasonable £20 and only 40,000 spectators (up 50% on last year) enable relatively easy access to the entire site.
The theme for this year was ‘Young Guns Born to Win’ and just to keep everyone occupied during the rain cloudbursts the program had photos of drivers who fitted the bill and the aim was to name all twenty. This year’s attendance was the largest of its twenty year existence with an impressive 185,000. The site is so large that most of the time there is plenty of room to move but when famous drivers make an appearance it can get rather cosy.

The Hill-climb is the pivotal event of the weekend and large screens, grandstands and expert commentary make it possible to view all the action. The final shootout for the hillclimb took place on Sunday with the drivers starting in reverse order of their fastest qualifying time. It was a tense and exciting climax to the event as less than six tenths of a second separated the first three drivers. Anthony Reid in the Chevron GT3 took the top step of the podium in a time of 46.46 seconds.
Will Fly Photography Dominating Goodwood House the Gerry Judah designed sculpture could be viewed from most areas of the park, standing 28 metres high this tribute to Lotus consisted of a 3D loop with six Lotus cars. Mark Webber was joined
by his team mate at Red Bull Racing Sebastian Vettel and former F1 World Champion Alain Prost who were making their first visit to the Festival and proved to be a great crowd pleaser.

Renault’s Alpine concept car made its British debut at Goodwood on Friday. Created to honour 50 years of the original Alpine A110 rally colossus, the appropriately-named A110-50 was driven Will Fly Photography by Alain Prost. In the Stable Yard behind Goodwood House an exhibition honouring Alain Prost’s long and illustrious motor racing career was well attended. On view were some of the cars which helped him claim a seat with the very best of motor sport. Also numerous photographs and descriptions of epic moments in his career were well presented throughout the Stable Yard. Emanuele Pirro, the Italian ex-F1 driver and five times Le Mans 24 Hour winner answered questions in the outside interview area which had seating on three sides for the public to sit and listen.
Photo by Jill Carter Photo by Jill Carter Another great success for Goodwood and despite the appalling British summer they found the few days that enabled the event to be enjoyable. Thanks to the efforts of the Goodwood ground staff and lulls in the rain my ‘wellies’ remained in the car boot.
Fun for the adventurous.

2012 8th July Silverstone, Great Britain After so much talk about constant rain, muddy fields and thousands being asked to stay away from the British Grand Prix, drivers and fans were able to enjoy a dry race. Fernando Alonso started on pole and had a good start to stay in the lead and keep Mark Webber behind him.
The race gets under way

out fighting moving up the grid, overtaking Michael and then Felipe to sit in third position. After the final pit stops on lap 38, Fernando's lead was almost five seconds. Mark waited and closed the gap and by lap 48, Fernando’s options had had it, while Mark’s harder tyres were in top form. Mark was able to overtake Fernando and pull out a gap of over 3 seconds as he took the chequered flag. The fans were delighted and an enormous cheer went up as he overtook to take the lead. Fernando took second and Sebastian third. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button were eighth and 10th, whilst Force India's Paul di Resta retired after two laps.
22nd July Hockenheim, Germany Ferrari's Fernando Alonso once again started on pole and made a dash away from the line ahead of Sebastian Vettel. He maintained the lead and left enough gap to pull clear before their first pit stops to ensure he held the lead into the second stint. Jenson Button climbed up from sixth on the grid and into third place. At the second set of pit stops he jumped Sebastian to take second place. Fernando was in control this race and slowly edged out a gap ahead to avoid any chance of his rivals using their DRS. Jenson began to lose grip in his rear tyres and was overtaken on the penultimate lap by Sebastian in a bizarre move in which he went off the track.

Best Wishes to Maria de Villota We were upset to hear about the crash at Duxford airfield last month which resulted in Marussia test driver Maria de Villota losing her right eye. Having mentioned her in our feature last month about women in F1, it is sad to have to report such bad news. The car appeared to suddenly accelerate and plough into the loading ramp of a support truck. Marussia conducted an initial analysis immediately after the crash. While the exact circumstances of the crash have yet to be revealed, Marussia team principal, John Booth, said: 'We are satisfied the findings of our internal investigation exclude the car as a factor in the accident.' The findings have been passed onto the Health and Safety executive who are conducting their own probe into the crash. 'We have now concluded our investigatory work and can again focus on the priority, which continues to be Maria's wellbeing. In that regard, we continue to support Maria and the De Villota family in any way we can.' Everyone at the Costa Car Trader passed on their best wishes too for Maria and her family.
Fernando took the win, his third this season; Sebastian crossed the line in second and Jenson third. However, after the race, Sebastian was given a 20-second penalty for the pass, since the rules state that you can't go off the track to gain an advantage. This meant he was dropped to fifth place and Jenson promoted to second. Lewis Hamilton didn’t have a good race, despite it being his 100th Grand Prix. He retired with gearbox damage after running well down the field following an early puncture.

LÍNEA DIRECTA REPORTS ON THE NEW FRENCH LEGISLATION ON DRINK DRIVING From July 1st, all French drivers driving on roads in France must carry a breathalyser kit in their cars. The measure, announced by the previous government, was due to take effect four months ago, but the rush to buy the kits has led to supplies being sold out, which has led to a moratorium on the introduction of the devices. According to the French authorities, the regulation, the first of its kind to be introduced in the European Union, will also affect foreign drivers who drive in France, although they will not be required to have the device installed in their vehicles until November. In addition, breathalysers will also be obligatory in all discotheques and bars which have a licence to open at night. By implementing this law, the French government hopes to save 500 lives a year, due to the presence of alcohol being detected in almost a third of all fatal accidents occurring in France. In addition to this regulation, the French authorities have approved a packet of measures aimed at reducing the accident rate on roads, which include: An increase on the road network in the number of fixed speed cameras to 2,500, which will not be signposted. The introduction of new generation mobile speed cameras, which allow a travelling police car to measure speed. All motorists must carry a high-visibility vest and a warning triangle.

July Ace Café
P
hew, what a scorcher we had this month! However, Sunday morning started off a bit cooler, thanks to a nice breeze, but it soon hotted up at the Ace Cafe. At 11am there were only half a dozen classics to be seen, but half an hour later we had over 40 cars and motorcycles on display. This is fewer than last month, but maybe some were a bit too tired to come out and play after staying up past their cocoa time to watch an amazing end to the latest Andy Murray show. We had the usual regulars and occasional visitors, including several Porsches, seven to be precise, and a few motorcyles. In between, ie, with three wheels, was a rather nice Volkwagen powered Boom Trike with box trailer. Phoenix Car Club

Oval circuit racing at Cartagena is growing steadily every month. More and more cars are getting ready for the winter season and last month two races were won by 14-year olds! The Cars are now racing in heats to determine who will progress to the finals and such is the over-enthusiasm of some drivers that the race cars have suffered a few bumps and scrapes along the way. Last month saw drivers especially flying in from Ireland and UK to compete with the numbers of spectators steadily on the rise. Racing takes place every second Sunday evening during the hotter summer weather. If you feel the need for extreme Speed, you know where it can be found! More details and updates on Facebook, visit their website www.velocity-racing.eu. or call 674 256 147. To get to the track, get off the AP7 at junction 820, near Cartagena and follow the signs. In race two, Marco Melandri took the win after a close battle with three other riders. Eugene Laverty took second, just ahead of Chaz Davies to take his first ever podium, with Max Biaggi a close fourth. The top four riders were separated by only 0.484 seconds. In Brno, Czech Republic, Marco Melandri scored the double, winning both races and Tom Sykes taking second in both. Max Biaggi leads the board, 21 points ahead of Marco Melandri. 2012 At Oulton Park, Swan Yamaha's Tommy Hill celebrated his first triple win in the British Superbike Championship by claiming all three race wins of the day. He also had three flying starts to take a hat trick in the STIHL Power Award from the sixth round of this BSB season. At Brand’s Hatch, it was local hero Shane 'Shakey' Byrne who scored his third and fourth race wins of the season, by taking the double in front of his rapturous home crowd. In round one, he held off the challenges from Noriyuki Haga and then Josh Brookes, whereas in race two, he fought off the hard-charging Josh Brookes. Dani Pedrosa in Germany 30th June Assen, Netherlands
It was an action packed race, with the drama starting on the first corner, where Álvaro Bautista took out Jorge Lorenzo. Dani Pedrosa then led the race but Casey Stoner overtook him to take the win leaving Pedrosa in second. Andrea Dovizioso took the last podium position. Bautista received a penalty for the incident, but it’s no consolation for Lorenzo and it was the second year in a row that he has been taken out by another rider at the Dutch circuit.
8 July Sachsenring, Germany
Dani Pedrosa got his first victory of the 2012 season after battling throughout the race with his team-mate Casey Stoner. They were neck and neck on the final lap, but Stoner crashed out two turns from the end. He was pushing too hard to chase down Pedrosa. A large gap then saw Jorge Lorenzo take second and Andrea Dovizioso third. 15 July Mugello, Italy Dani Pedrosa took the initial lead, but was overtaken by both Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso. Jorge Lorenzo went on to open up a gap and take the victory, his second successive victory at the track. Dani Pedrosa took second ahead of Dovizioso, who took third for the third time on the trot. Stoner had a tough race, due mainly to the wrong tyre choice. Lorenzo now has a 19-point gap at the top of the championship ahead of Pedrosa and 37 ahead of Stoner. 29 July Laguna Seca United States We will report on this race next month.
