This is Ford’s new baby SUV, the Ecosport. It crosses over with the Kuga and is on the prowl of Nissan‘s Juke. It’s based on the new Fiesta which is still the best supermini money can buy and has many similarities inside and out. There is an issue with the name though, Ford is requesting that people pronounce it as the “EchoSport”. The engine that will probably take up a large portion of sales is also the best in the range. It’s the 1.5ltr turbodiesel and produces 98bhp, despite the 14sec 0-62mph time it's got plenty of torque to get you around town. Ford claims it should cover over 60mpg which makes it the cheapest Ecosport to run too. There are two other engines to choose from; a 110bhp 1.5ltr petrol and a 1.0ltr EcoBoost which reaches 0-62mph in 12.7 seconds and will still manage to return you around 53.3mpg.
You probably don’t know but this new Ecosport is the second generation, the first being built in 2003 by Ford Brazil and it was one of Ford’s best sellers. In 2012 the second generation first appeared in India as a concept and was launched a few months later in Brazil. Ford believes it’s time to hit the European market and the Ecosport is ready to order now.

Californian-based Trion Supercars have designed this beast, the Nemesis hypercar. Although currently it's still a concept, the company are planning to handmake the cars in the USA. Looking to take on Bugatti and Koenigsegg, they are boasting a power output of more than 2,000bhp. Yes 2,000bhp. (the Koenigsegg One:1 has 1,322bhp). Powered by a twinturbocharged V8 engine, 0-62mph is in 2.8 seconds and the top speed is over 270mph.

Due out this autumn, the facelifted Volkswagen Scirocco gets new styling and a revised range of engines. The original Scirocco was launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1974, with the new version appearing 5 years ago. New colours are also available including metallic lilac.

Peugeot 208 GTi 30th Anniversary Edition. Boy racer’s favourite, the Peugeot 205 GTi is celebrating 30 years since it was launched back in the 80’s. To mark the occasion, Peugeot have produced a special edition of the 208 (the modern day 205) so those yearning for their youth can buy this matt black menance and feel 20 again... Only this time around, the insurance premiums won’t be so high. The 1.6-litre petrol engine produces 208bhp, giving 0 to 62mph in 6.5 seconds. It will be available at the end of the year, but prices haven't been revealed yet.
For Sale: 25 Year Old Mini With 13 Miles on the Clock. The British Mini Club is selling a Mini which was bought in 1989 when the company released 3,000 limited edition cars from their Longbridge factory line to honour 30 years of Mini production at the plant. A farmer purchased two of them with the intention of giving to his sons in the future, on their 21st birthday. It was not to be however, since both of his sons were too tall to fit into the little cars by the time they reached 21. So, the farmer sold them to the BMC, who used one as a raffle prize while this Mini was put in storage. The car has only 13 miles on the clock and never been registered since being made. It’s up for sale at £18,000. Aston Martin’s Latest Gaming Car. Last month we told you about Nissan and VW's cars in the PlayStation racing game Gran Turismo 6, now Aston Martin have unveiled their latest contribution. The Aston Martin DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo is the result of six months work by an in-house team. The 800bhp twin-turbo V1 DP-100 Vision Gran Turismo was developed using many of the processes the company used to develop production cars, with hand sketches followed by 3D modelling and onto computer-aided realisation. Aston Martin has been a feature of Gran Turismo from the games debut, with the very first edition including the DB7 Coupe and the Volante. Gran Turismo 6 already features the One-77 developed by the company in 2011. The new car can be downloaded now.

Classic Car Collection. You may remember in our June issue we told you about dentist Dr. James Hull who was selling his classic car collection of around 500 classic vehicles. They have been purchased (for an undisclosed amount) by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Operations division. The estimated price was around 100 million pounds. The collection has 130 Jaguars, including C- and D-types, an XKSS, an SS100, a rare alloy-bodied XK120, several early E-types and a Mark X once owned by Sir William Lyons, shows JLR’s desire to “invest more” in its distinguished heritage. “We share the same objective as James Hull of keeping this unique collection in British hands,” said John Edwards, Managing Director of Special Operations. For the second month we’re showcasing the cream of automotive engineering with Aston Martin.
This 1934 Lagonda M45 Tourer could nearly reach 100 mph with a 4.5ltr 6 cylinder engine. A sporting version M45R Rapide took victory at Le Mans in 1935.
This is the reinvented DB9 due in 2016. It will kick off Aston Martins rebirth of new aluminium architecture and a new range of Mercedes AMG engines.

With Clare Lawrence Gary Connery is a professional stuntman, appearing in many films such as Harry Potter, James Bond and Johnny English. He is the man who landed a wing suit after jumping from a helicopter at 2,400 feet and was the stunt double for the Queen during the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. You are the only person to have jumped from a helicopter without a parachute and survive. How did this come about? Landing without a parachute is the Holy Grail of jumping. Back in 2003/4, I did my first jump from an aircraft with a wing suit and realised I knew how to land it. In September 2011, I jumped several times in Walenstadt, Switzerland with a wing suit and confirmed I could land it, since I was able to fly through the narrow mouth of the gorge each time before releasing my parachute. I decided that I would go for it. If I didn’t do it and someone beat me to it, I would look in the mirror each morning and be destroyed. I spent eight months preparing for it before making the jump in May 2012 from 2,400 feet, landing safely on a runway of cardboard boxes. What emotions did you experience and what was the overall feeling from that day? It’s hard to explain the feelings from the day, the only way to find out is to do it for yourself! Everyone has a fear of jumping out of an aircraft, but everybody’s level of fear is different. I have a high threshold before reaching mine, but to some people the same fear may be felt removing a spider from the bath. The wing suits are amazing. They look similar to the 'winglets' that some mammals have that enable them to glide from tree to tree. Is that what the technology is based on? No, although the idea may initially have come from this. The first wing suits were designed back in the 1930´s, but like all things, they have evolved over time into the suits we have today. How did you get started as a stuntman? As a young boy, I saw my father come home from work unhappy because he didn’t like his job and I realised then (I was only about 7) that I wanted a job I enjoyed. Throughout my childhood I watched films such as James Bond and wanted to be a stunt man. As I grew up, I kayaked with the British Junior Team and was heavily involved with ski racing. I met someone on the stunt register, who advised me what I needed to do to become a stuntman and so I set about achieving the 6 sport qualifications necessary. Once qualified, I put my name on the stunt register.
Being the Queen’s double at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games must have been thrilling. What was it like doing a jump live on TV?
GARY CONNERY Do you drive a fast car or bike in your personal life?
Very different from the TV and film work I am used to where you can re-record as often as needed. I practised the jump beforehand, but the tension was very different on the night, knowing that an estimated 1.4 billion were watching around the world, it was high pressured and I wanted to do a good job.
Yes, I have two motorbikes, a Yamaha R6 and a 1200 Suzuki Bandit, which is unique and has a fantastic paint job.
Did you get to watch the rest of the ceremony?
No one had done it before and I wanted to do something in support of the Dalai Lama in Tibet. Like all things, you start out with small steps and gain experience. This jump, as all of mine are, was calculated and thoroughly thought out.
Once I had landed, I got de-rigged, changed into my own clothes and took my allocated seat in the stadium. Although I only got to see the last 10 minutes or so, the atmosphere was electric and it was a great feeling to know that everybody had seen my jump but no-one knew it was me. You have done stunts for films including James Bond, Indiana Jones, Batman Begins. Were many of these using cars or bikes? Not really, if someone is needed for car and bikes stunts, there are people on the stunt register who are better at these than me, having taken part in the Motocross GP for example and so are usually chosen. I aim to change this with my lastest world record attempt. (See later)
You jumped from Nelson’s Column, which is considered a low base jump at 151 foot from the platform. It sounds like a crazy thing to do. Why?
Have you had any injuries whilst doing your stunts? I am very careful and have never broken a limb. I find it tends to be your down time when injuries occur, since you are not so focused. For example, after the wing suit jump I came away completely unscathed, but while we were cleaning up the landing area, I picked up a coke can and sliced my finger open! Where do you go from here? I have another landing project in the pipeline, with a twist, I can’t say any more at this time, but watch this space! Later this year I am going to attempt to break the land speed record in a 2500bhp Keating Supercar. Hopefully capable of 360mph, we are aiming for a peak speed of 300mph which will smash the current record held by the Bugatti Veyron at 268mph. 2014 6th July Silverstone, Great Britain Nico Rosburg was on pole with Lewis Hamilton starting from sixth after a mistake in qualifying. Lewis made a great start and had got up to fourth after the first few corners when the race was red-flagged following a heavy crash involving Kimi Raikkonen. The Ferrari driver ran off the track through Turn Four and spun as he rejoined. Felipe Massa clipped the car as it spun across the track, and Kimi speared into the barriers. The race was stopped to repair the barriers and thankfully Kimi only suffered bruising to his ankles. The race re-started behind the safety car after an hours delay and Nico built up a five-second lead in the two laps it took Lewis to pass Jenson Button. By lap 18, Lewis had closed the gap to under 3 seconds and Nico pitted but then reported "problems on the downshift" two laps later. Lewis made his first pit stop six laps later and rejoined nearly 6 seconds behind his teammate. The Brit was closing the gap on Nico, he got to within 2 seconds when Nico lost his gears and had to retire. Lewis remained in the lead and went on to take the victory. It was an important win for him, he last won in the GB Grand Prix in 2008 when he also won the title. With Nico not getting any points, Lewis is back within 4 points of his teammate. Valtteri Bottas had another cracking race, moving up to third early on and staying there, eventually taking the second place on the podium. Likewise Daniel Ricciardo had a good race, starting in eighth and maintaining his tyres on a onestop strategy to finish in third.
Jenson Button took fourth with Sebastian Vettel finishing 5th having started in second, but dropping down at the start. The World Champion was involved in a wheel-to-wheel battle with Fernando Alonso in the later stages. It was like a playground spat and very enjoyable to watch. Fernando wouldn’t let him through lap after lap and you could hear Sebastian on the radio getting more and more angry. He finally passed Fernando after 15 laps, leaving the Spaniard to take 6th place.
The safety car came out and once it went in, Nico pulled away and opened up a large gap in a short space of time. Lewis Hamilton had started 20th after a crash from break failure in qualifying and a gearbox change. By the 12th lap he was up to 10th and continued moving up the pack, or rather bumping up the pack; he made contact with Adrian Sutil, Kimi Räikkönen and Jenson Button. This latter knock caused some front wing damage, which wasn’t enough to warrant a change, but affected his car at the critical end stages of the race. At the chequered flag, Nico took a great win, in a German car for a German team, with Valtteri taking second again and Lewis third, not bad from 20th! The new Volvo XC90 will be one of the safest cars in the world thanks to two world firsts in technology. First, run-off road protection will take action when the car detects it has left the road; namely tightening of seatbelts, steering aids and warning systems. Secondly, auto braking at junctions will activate when a driver turns in front of an oncoming car. The car will brake to reduce the risk of a collision. Jaguar Land Rover have developed a virtual windscreen aimed at reducing distraction and increasing performance driving. Information can be displayed across the entire windscreen including possible hazards and navigational assistance, as well as optimal racing lines and ghost cars for race drivers. JLR say that this technology could be available in the next few years.

LOCAL CLUBS & EVENTS After June`s poor turnout, because of rain, (what`s that?) July's was back with all flags flying and the normal 100+ cars braved the heat to attend. A sparkling white Lincoln Continental convertible really was a large luxury car with “Trunk and Hood” big enough to play table tennis on. Could you get it in your garage? It`s a well known fact that owning a classic you rarely get your money back, but you have the enjoyment (and the pain), in owning them. A newer than new Citroen 2CV was on show, which the owner has spent over 15,000€ on is for sale on page 22 for only 16,000€. Club Torrevieja - San Cayetano Run 20th July 2014 14 old cars and 14 old men left the Lo Monte Hotel on the N332 at 13.00 hours. The cool temperature was a relief as some of the 'old girls' tend to overheat (and the cars as well). We headed off in the direction of San Miguel and onto Torremendo where we turned left just before the village onto the CV954, which was signposted Estacion de Canteras and the old station was at the far end of the road. The most noticeable thing was the total absence of traffic (it must have been like this in the 40's when most of the drivers were born). We joined the RM1 to Sucina and drove to San Cayetano for their town fiesta. We had been invited to put on a 'show and shine' in the church square in aid of AECC. We enjoyed a fabulous paella laid on for us, while the locals enjoyed being photographed with the cars. Thanks to Lesley and Mike Stansmore who made the arrangements for the day.

The Ariel Motor Company have launched the Ariel Ace motorcycle. Known nowadays for the Ariel Atom, the company actually began in 1870 making revolutionary bicycles and patented spoked wheels. The new Ace, which is the first bike they have made for 50 years, reinforces Ariel’s tradition, of all that’s best in British innovation, performance, quality and craftsmanship. The new motorcycle has a Honda 1237cc V4 engine with a top speed of 165mph and 0-60 in 3.4 seconds. Only 100 to 150 of the new bikes will be made per year from the factory in Somerset alongside the Atom sports car.

An Ariel Atom has been bought by Avon and Somerset Police to add to their fleet of squad cars. Its aim is primarily to track down bikers. Based on the Atom 3.5R, the one-off Atom PL has a Honda 2.0ltr engine that develops 350bhp and accelerates from 0-60mph in just 2.5 seconds.

Ride 15: Elda Castle
It was raining as the race started and both Repsol Honda riders; Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa started on wet tyres. As the rain stopped and the track began to dry, Marquez came in to swap his bike and tyres and then went back out to chase down Andrea Dovizioso, who he had been battling for a few laps previously. He overtook him and went onto take the win, the first rider since Giacomo Agostini in 1971 to win the first eight premier-class races of the year. Meanwhile Pedrosa was involved in his own battle with Aleix Espargaro with the two passing each other numerous times before the factory Honda rider broke away. Pedrosa took third place behind Dovizioso.
A group of around 14-15 bikers (some where posing) assembled at the Sunset Cafe for what promised to be a different ride. Well it certainly started that way with everybody hunting for Handy Andyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s keys. As the leader (mug) for the day it was chaos, but super Hayley found them stuck to the underside of his tank bag. (?How?) So with mutterings of blaming Rob for occupying too much space on the table, off we set heading along the N332 turning off for San Miguel picking up the AP7 just passed the toll booths. Leaving the motorway at the Aspe exit and stopping for fuel for both man and machine.
13th July Sachsenring, Germany
Once topped up it was off to Agost and following the road to the outskirts of Castalla. There are some great views along the way, which we all enjoyed ohh-ing and arr-ing to. Up into the mountains we rode on the CV8170 where, as it climbed among the trees, it gave glimpses of the spectacular views on both sides of the road. Once we started the descent the views remained just as stunning with the extra dimension of there being a sheer unguarded drop on one side and a solid cliff on the other. Upon entering the town of Petrer there was confusion as to the most direct route to the Castle but after a tour of the inner city where Petrer merged into Elda, the castle was sited high above the skyline, dominating the town below. The castle is well worth a visit and the 360° views stretch far into the distance.

Next it was onto a bar for quick bite where one of the riders (the Italian) declared that he needed fuel which prompted a round of derision. So with the hilarity of abuse subsiding for Handy Andy (the leader) onto the Italian, it was off towards Monover stopping for fuel for one. Picking up the signs for Pinoso, then La Romana, and onto the Hondons before heading over the mountain (more views) to Albatera. Following the signs for the A7 where Handy Andy jumped ship and left Rob to lead the remaining heroes back.
This time around the rain was before the race and the tyre choice was a difficult one as the track was drying very quickly. Most of the riders changed from wet set-up to dry after the final Warm Up lap, meaning they had to start from pit lane. The first few laps were chaotic as everyone was bunched up and vying for position. Marc Marquez made his way through the pack to take the lead ahead of his teammate Dani Pedrosa. Marquez headed off to victory once again, 1.5 seconds in front of Pedrosa. Jorge Lorenzo took the last podium spot over 10 seconds behind Marquez, with Valentino Rossi fourth. The riders go off for their summer break now, with Marc Marquez winning all nine races so far, giving him a perfect total of 225 points. There are 9 races left in the season.
