Editors Notes:

We were shocked and saddened to hear that Jules Bianchi passed away last month. After spending 9 months in a coma following his crash in Japan, the lack of news about him made us wrongly assume that he was on the way to recovery. Jill Carter has written a fitting tribute to the young driver who was tipped to be racing for Ferrari once Kimi Raikkonen’s contract came to an end. The last death of a driver in an F1 car was Ayrton Senna in 1994 and lessons are still being learnt regarding safety issues. Our team at the CCT send our condolences to his family and friends. You can catch up with the results of the current season of F1 in Richard O’Rourke’s Motorsport Month on page 16. Do you like our cover car? Is it reminding you of your youth? We love it and are grateful to Anthony for sharing it with us for our readers to see it too. It had its first outing at the Benijofar Car Show this month, which we also report on. We even have a Gran Torino Starsky and Hutch-style that you can cut out and make - something for the kids to do in the long summer holiday. Nathan Hall gives us his Car History and we are enjoying hearing about the cars of yesteryear. Happy motoring! Professor

Inside, the car features the ‘U-connect’ infotainment system used in the Fiat/Alfa/Jeep range. Lounge models have a larger touchscreen interface with smartphone connectivity, which is what the young city dwelling 500 drivers want. The Fiat 500 has undergone a visual revamp, the first since it was relaunched eight years ago. The revival has been a great success story for the brand with 1.5 million 500s being sold since 2007. Fiat claim that they have made 1800 detail changes throughout the car, including updated technology and equipment and an interior overhaul.

Jules Bianchi by Jill Carter

Jules Bianchi

Bianchi’s grandfather, Mauro Bianchi, was three times champion in the GT category of top international sports car racing. His great-uncle, Lucien Bianchi, competed in 17 Grands Prix during the 1960s and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968, before being killed in a crash a year later, at the age of 34. Bianchi was tipped as a future World Champion by many in the sport but unfortunately was not able to display his full potential driving the somewhat lowly Marussia car. So history will not be able to report whether he was the best driver of his family. (Mark Thompson / Getty Images)

French Formula One driver Jules Bianchi, of Italian descent, was born on the 3rd August 1989 and sadly died on the 17th July 2015 in his birth town of Nice aged 25 years. After languishing in a coma for nine months with severe head injuries sustained in a crash at the Japanese Grand Prix in 2014 whilst driving for the Marussia team, Bianchi slipped away. He previously tested for both Ferrari and Force India and was a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Three days before his death, Bianchi’s father Philippe in an interview with radio station France Info on Monday, spoke of the ongoing heartbreak of the situation. "In general, progress needs to be made in the first six months. It has been nine months now and Jules has still not woken up and there is no significant progress". Following his death, the family, including mother Christine, brother Tom and sister Melanie, released a statement saying: “Jules fought right to the very end, as he always did, but today his battle came to an end. The pain we feel is immense and indescribable.” The family said that they had discussed the plight of Michael Schumacher and Bianchi had stated that he would not like to live in a world he could not motor race.

His father, Philippe, managed a karting track near Marseille, where Jules made his debut behind the wheel aged three. He was racing by the age of five. At 13, he was spotted by Maranello Karting and once signed up demonstrated great skill and decisiveness in his driving. He developed well and in 2007 raced in French Formula Renault 2.0, winning five times and finishing the season as champion. The following season he progressed to competing in the Formula Three European Championship and finished third in the 2008 season. The following year (2009) Bianchi won the title in the penultimate race cementing his Championship with a win at Hockenheim, Germany bringing his total race wins to eight. Towards the end of 2009, he represented Ferrari at the young drivers’ test in Jerez and graduated from the Ferrari academy. In 2010 Bianchi was battling in the GP2 Series and was lying fourth in the championship before he was badly injured at the Hungaroring circuit, Hungary. He recovered from a broken vertebra in time to take part in the next round. In November of 2010 Ferrari named Bianchi as their test and reserve driver for the 2011 Formula One season. A year later, he was loaned to the Force India team as test and reserve driver, but lost out to the more experienced Adrian Sutil in the contest for a place in the team’s front rank of drivers. Bianchi joined the Marussia F1 team in 2013 and in 2014 scored his and his team's first World Championship points by finishing ninth at the Monaco Grand Prix. Jules Bianchi would have replaced Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari, according to former president Luca Di Montezemolo. The number 17, Bianchi's number will be retired from the Formula One line up as a mark of respect and remembrance.

MOTORS IN THE NEWS

Return of the Daytona Coupe. Shelby American are going to produce a limited run of the iconic Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. The cars are to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Shelby American’s FIA World Championship win. The original Daytona Coupe is one of the most desirable racing cars in American motorsport history. Only 6 were built and the price for one nowadays starts at $7 million at auction. While the cars are new, they will be built using the blueprints and measurements of the original Coupe. There will be improvements to make them safer and give more performance. There are two versions to choose from: Fiberglass-bodied models start at $180,000, with the aluminum starting at $350,000. Built as kit cars, the choice of engine is up to the customer, though Shelby American will provide an aluminum-block 289 V8 with a serial number identical to the rolling chassis for those looking for an historically-accurate powerplant. The total combined production run for both body styles is capped at 50, each with a commemorative badge celebrating the 50th anniversary of the original. Lego Ferrari F40. Lego have added a new set to their line up and this time it's the iconic 1987 Ferrari F40 supercar. The detail in the car is superb, Both front and rear clamshells open in the same way as the Ferrari, as do the doors. The headlights pop up and there’s even a can of tyre sealant in the area of the engine compartment. The Lego Ferrari is 27cm long and constructed from 1158 pieces. Aimed at builders 14 years old and above, it goes on sale next month priced at €89.99.

New DS Edition. Citroen’s DS upmarket brand is planning a new range-topping DS8 for 2018, launching first in China, then Europe. It's understood to be influenced by the Divine DS concept car seen last October at the Paris Motor Show as well as the 1955 DS. It would be up against the Audi A6 and top-end VW Passat. DS is now a standalone brand, rather than a subset of Citroen, due to the success of the DS Division, for example, the DS3 now outsells its Citroen counterpart, the C3. If you look at the new 2015 DS5, there's no Citroen chevron on the bonnet. We look forward to seeing a concept of the DS8, my guess would be at the next Paris Motor Show in 2016.

Anthony bought this Ford Gran Torino from the UK and his friend drove it over here last month. It is a year correct tribute of the original 1970s TV series Starsky and Hutch. Only 74-76 Gran Torinos were used, the pre-74 model has a different front and rear body shape. Anthony already owns the General Lee (featured in the CCT in July 2011) and a replica police car, what's next we wonder?

The car came from Texas and was virtually rust free prior to the Starsky and Hutch conversion. It was painted to reflect the second series of the TV show, hence the chrome mirrors, stripe shape and silver painted bumper filler panels.

Before Anthony got it it had: New exhaust, suspension components including coil springs and air shocks, new tyres, re-cored radiator, re-cored heater matrix, recovered seats, new carpet, headliner and door panels.

The car: 1976 Ford Gran Torino 5.8 litre Windsor V8 engine C4 3 speed automatic transmission (column change) 15" Deep dished polished period old school alloys on the rear, 14" on the front. Gabriel Hijacker air schocks on the rear to give it the extra rake. Original TV colour Ford 2B red and Wimbledon White stripe with black painted 5mm outline. Motorolla Police Radio and red magnetic flashing light. The original Starsky and Hutch TV programme aired between 1975 and 1979 and featured Southern California police detectives, David Starsky (played by Paul Michael Glaser) and Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson (played by David Soul). They took on the bad guys helped by informant Huggy Bear and of course Starky's 1974 Gran Torino. Upon seeing the car for the first time, Glaser commented that it looked like a "Striped Tomato" and the nickname stuck with the show's writers working it into the show as Hutch's derogatory name for Starsky's beloved Torino. In reality Glaser did not like and still does not like the car!

12

In 2004 a Starsky & Hutch comedy movie was made featuring Ben Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch. Glaser and Soul made a cameo appearance at the end of the movie.

This is my story on the history of my car ownership through the years … here goes... My very first car was given to me in 1967. This was a Morris Minor which was a project with which I was expected to tinker. Unfortunately the necessary budget and mechanical knowledge were beyond my means so the project was abandoned but a considerable amount of learning was achieved nevertheless. I then passed the driving test and drove the shop van, a Ford Thames 15 cwt. I remember one day loading 20 1cwt bags of peat in the van and on the way back going through some roadwork’s a little to fast. The van hit an oil drum marking the edge of the works and such was the impact that it spun in the air many feet and I saw it land in the rear view mirror. I thought that the front of the van would be so badly damaged I would be in big trouble, but when I parked at the back of the shop and inspected the damage, I could not see any, apart from a chip in the paint on the door hinge. I never did tell the old man ‘till many years later. This van was used for camping trips and collecting my motorbike, a Triumph tiger, when it broke down and this it did a lot so the car buying started. I got a tenner for the Morris, added £15 quid and bought a 1955ish Black Ford Pop sit up and beg. The brakes were terrible, especially in the wet and the wipers ran on a vacuum so unless you were accelerating you had no wipers. I blew a valve in the engine and the thing was becoming more and more troublesome so I sold it and bought a Ford Anglia 105E. It was a horrible grey colour which had to go and the cheap and effective alternative was to hand paint it with with Valspar paint. The finish was in two tone blue which could be buffed with metal polish to ‘flat’ it off. This was a very good car until my girlfriend mentioned that the floor was ‘bouncing‘. On inspection it was discovered that the floor was rotten and was about to cave in so a quick repair was done with pop rivets and a sheet of ally hammered to fit. Job’s a good’n.

I was paid back for this piece of engineering as the Anglia was sold and changed for a Hillman Imp. This cost £225 (we were in the big money now) but little did I know this was to be the worst car I ever owned. It blew the grand total of 14 head gaskets which sounds a lot but for anyone familiar with the Imp, this will seem quite normal. It was checked by the Rootes Garage and they said all was ok with the block and head. I was satisfied with their diagnosis and off I went but, lo and behold, 6 miles into my journey home it blew a gasket !! After I sold the Imp I was told that the cure for gasket trouble was to sandwich two together. Horses and stable doors come to mind!

Left: Ford Zodiac Mk1

Right: Ford Zephyr 6

It was time to go back to the Ford’s so this troublesome little Imp was traded for a Ford Zodiac Mk1. This was a very reliable car but you had to tell your passengers not to lean on the doors as they had a tendency to fly open I could have put new catches on but that would have stopped all the fun!! My next car was a Ford Zephyr, bought from my old school mate’s dad. It had a bench seat in the front, column gearchange and fins on the wings at the back. This was a really nice car and because it was very comfy and roomy I did some mini cabbing in it as I was buying my first house and needed to earn some extra cash. It was around this time I went out on my own with my locksmith business and needed a van so I started to drive string of 4 Morris Minor vans, a Moscovitch van, (what a tank) and, of course, 2 Ford Escorts. Later on I had a Mitsubishi L 300 and a Toyota Hi Ace; 12 seater for taking special needs children to school. All of these vans were owned over a period of time which is indeterminate, such is the passage of years and a dodgy memory. Read the final installment next week. Our thanks to Phoenix Car Club member, Nathan Hall and Richard O’Rourke for his invaluable help.

As my grandma used to say "roll on winter " and when the winter came "roll on summer"! Always we dream of that which we don't have at the time. A greeting from me to the brave people that have been in Spain this summer, when the visitors come back we will save them a bit of heat to welcome them on their return from northern lands and bring us a bottle of scotch whisky! Back in October 2014 in the CCT, I told you about my 1967 SEAT 600 and the restoration of it and now I will continue with some photos of the process. My whole life has been dedicated to the repair of this car, which was my great passion and remains so. I started in this profession 15 years ago and I have prepared all kinds of vehicles. The fact I am able to speak to all the readers of this magazine is for me a source of pride and satisfaction. I will continue with the restoration of my SEAT 600 until the end. The Motorsport Month by Richard O'Rourke

2015 Formula 1 Despite there being only two GPs this month there was plenty to talk about especially the very sad news about the passing of Jules Bianchi. Jules was no doubt a rising star of F1 and his death serves as a reminder of the risks the drivers take whenever they sit in a racing car. The touching scenes prior to the Hungarian GP showed just how tight knit a family they all are and, despite the rivalry and big money involved, there is still a human side to the sport.

Kyvat, Bottas and Raikkonen were all involved in the mayhem and in the end it was Vettel who took an emotional win ahead of the two Red Bulls with Danny K ahead of Danny R. No Mercedes car or engine on the podium? You have to go back to the 2013 to see that. Verstappen finished fourth and, wait for it, Alonso in the McLaren came in fifth with Button also in the points. If you missed this race do make an effort to watch it on replay. I promise you that knowing the result will not in any way diminish your enjoyment. The Podium in Hungary

No German GP this year due to financial wrangling between the circuit owners Jules Bianchi in Barcelona last year. and Ecclestone. Hard to believe that the home of dominant Mercedes and of Photo by Richard O’Rourke Schumacher and Vettel (9 of the last 15 Look at the top three finishers at the championships) cannot host a Grand British GP and you would be forgiven for Prix. Nothing could 1: Lewis Hamilton 202 be further from the truth as a blistering 2: Nico Rosberg 181 start by the Williams pair and changeable 3: Sebastian Vettel 160 weather conditions served up one of the best races of the season so far. Massa and Bottas led from the start but team tactics MotoGP let them down when a 1-2 finish looked One of the best races ever seen was the on the cards. Sometimes I think that verdict on the Assen (Holland) round Williams are almost afraid to take a risk of the Moto GP series. Rossi (Yamaha) to achieve a win and Bottas, in particular, and Marquez (Honda) had a mighty dice despite being very fast, doesn’t have the with Rossi crossing the line first and in killer instinct which is part of a great doing so extended his championship driver’s DNA. The team too lacked lead. Rossi is liked and admired by conviction when they should have everybody in the game but after this allowed the faster Bottas to pass Massa race Marquez declared war on the Italian but they procrastinated and threw away a for what he regarded as over aggressive possible win. In any case the rain inter- tactics (pot/kettle). The next few races vened and Mercedes and Ferrari could be interesting! outflanked Williams with Hamilton making an inspired (lucky?) pit stop to take the lead and go on to win.

On then to Hungary and the usual suspects again filled the top grid positions. Like Silverstone the Mercs were beaten off the line but this time it was the Ferraris of Vettel and Raikkonen who took the lead and, unlike Williams in Silverstone, they looked fully intent on staying ahead. All hell broke loose behind and the number of race changing incidents were far too numerous to mention here. Hamilton, Rosberg, Ricciardo,

And so to the Sachsenring in Germany where the Yamahas of Rossi and Lorenzo led the way from the Hondas of Marquez and Pedrosa. Not for long though as this was a track which was known to be Honda friendly and sure enough they duly took the lead and cruised to a comfortable win. The important issue was the championship standings as Honda are virtually out of it and so it was important that Rossi (the leader) and Lorenzo (the chaser) finish ahead of each other. Rossi did the business and extended his lead and, as Honda are expected to go well in the next race in the USA, the emphasis will once again be on the inter team battle at Yamaha. WRC We all know that Kris Meeke has a reputation for having the odd accident but even he surpassed himself in Poland by crashing on the shakedown stage which the drivers and teams use to make final set-up adjustments to the cars. After that drama it was business as usual with VW taking a comfortable win in the hands of Sebastian Ogier with team mate Andreas Mikkelsen following him home. VW have a total stranglehold on the championship, not surprising I suppose when you have the best car and the best driver at your disposal. Hopefuly the new Ford Fiesta will come good soon and challenge Ogier and co. Finland is next and what used to be called the Rally of the 1000 Lakes and traditionally won by a Skandinavian driver until Loeb came on the scene. Will Ogier take over from his fellow Frenchman or will Latvala or Mikkelsen keep home advantage? Worth a look at the huge jumps on ESPN or ITV 4. Kris Meeke

Italdesign Giugiaro

Nelson Piquet Jr. is the First Formula E Champion. Over 25,000 spectators packed into the grandstands at Battersea Park on the last Sunday in June for the final race of this inaugral season. There were three drivers in with a shot at the Title; Sebastien Buemi, Lucas di Grassi and Nelson Piquet Jr. Englishman Sam Bird took the victory, his second win of the season, great for him in front of his home crowd. The race for the Championship didn't disappoint, going to the final lap with the three finishing in the order listed above. However, it was Piquet who was the champion on the day, his six points for seventh place were enough to finish just a single point ahead of Buemi in the classification. The new season starts on October 17 in Beijing, China.

Giorgetto Giugiaro has resigned from his own design house Italdesign Giugiaro he founded in 1968. Giugiaro has been a key influence on the look of the modern vehicle, designing over 200 cars, including the 1974 VW Golf, first-generation Fiat Panda and the DeLorean DMC-12. Giugiaro, who is now 76 years old, sold a 90.1% stake in his business to the Volkswagen Group in 2010. Last month, VW subsidiary Audi bought the remaining 9.9%, which was still owned by Giugiaro and his son. In a statement, the c o m p a n y confirmed Giorgetto Giugiaro had left to "dedicate more time to his personal interests" and said he retained no position at Italdesign. Giugiaro was named Car Designer of the Century in 1999 and inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2002.

A group of riders meet on Thursdays at 9.30am (weather permitting) at Waldermars, La Florida. Call 671 826 201 or email mollyandbaileybassett@hotmail.com if you fancy joining them.

Ride 23: Long Way Round I've been told by numerous people (many of them local Spaniards!) that you can't get to Sierra de la Espuna national park without using the Autovias. Well folks, let me tell you...Yes you can. You just have to go The Long Way Round! About 14 of us braved the heat in the end, after two decided to give it a miss, one stayed home to do paperwork, another went sailing round the Med with Rob's daughter and one turned up on a bicycle?!! (And they were ALL Spanish!? Lol!). So, we gathered up the mad dogs and Englishmen and set off into the midday sun! The first part of the Run means getting to Fortuna and we've covered this before but there are various routes you can take. Our Day In The Sun began at Los Periquitos Hotel Spa

Fortuna. From the hotel we entered Fortuna on the C3223 heading out on the MU411 towards Campotejar. It's a great piece of tarmac this, with long, sweeping, open curves excellent views and a good road surface to boot. Onto Archena and Mula with the scenery getting better and better. Skirting Mula (going round it! Not dressing it in women's clothes that is!!?), we followed signs for Pliego. This road provides panoramas that would be at home in Snowdonia or the Scottish Highlands. This route takes you behind the Sierra De Espuna and as a result, you get to see the mountains from a totally different perspective. The road weaves through 'farmed' campo before plunging into the forest that makes up a large part of the Reserve. The only change in direction comes in the form of a T-junction. Taking a left, we continued along the MU503, the wooded nature of this road means the surface is uneven due to the tree roots. But a steady pace and a keen eye for vehicles are enough to secure safe passage. At the entry to the road over the mountains, Rob paused to point out the military Radar station on the summit...our destination. 1585 meters above us! GULP!! If you're on your own, there are a few 'stopping off' points where the views are frankly, breathtaking. Once at the top, everyone noted the temperature had dropped a few degrees and we enjoyed the views before making a steady descent. After lunch we made our way back to the coast via the much more conventional route of the RM602 before cutting across to the C3319 on the F12. An excellent day folks. Thanks to everyone who came along. Stay safe, El Guiri
