Alternative Energy Sources II

by Jill Carter The Norwegian government has just announced that it is seeking to ban all petrol and diesel powered cars by 2025. The new law has not officially been passed, but it has been put forward in a white paper, which calls for new private cars, buses and light commercial vehicles to be zero-emission after 2025. This was greeted with enthusiasm by Tesla, a leading electric car manufacturer. Currently 24% of Norwegian registered cars are electric driven. It will remain to be seen how this will affect classic cars..

Biomass Energy.

This is energy produced from organic matter such as wood, agricultural residues, food wastes, essentially anything that grows or is excreted by animals as manure. The most commercial of which has been ethanol which was discussed in CCT's June edition. Animal manure converted to fuel offers a number of advantages for large livestock and poultry operations. For example odours in the vicinity are reduced and manure can be produced cheaper than using propane gas for farm heating, refrigeration and running a boiler and can even be simply used in car engines. Many of you may recall the use of chicken manure by Harold Bate, chicken farmer and inventor from Devonshire in the early 1970's. He demonstrated that you can power your motor vehicles with droppings from chickens, pigs or any other animal of your choice . . . even with your own waste! To prove his statement is no idle boast, Harold has been operating a 1953 Hillman and a five-ton truck on methane gas generated by decomposing pig and chicken manure for years. He also claims that the low-cost methane makes his vehicles run faster, cleaner and better than they operate on fossil fuels fuel. The Hillman managed a top speed of 75 mph. Though he received global publicity the project never took off commercially though a number of his conversion kits were purchased.

Coffee as a Biodiesel.

New research from Bath University's Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies shows that waste coffee grinds could be used to make biodiesel. Oil can be extracted from coffee grounds by soaking them in an organic solvent, before being chemically transformed into biodiesel via a process called “transesterification”. Around 8 million tonnes of coffee are produced globally each year and ground waste coffee contains up to 20 per cent oil per unit weight. This oil also has similar properties to current feedstocks used to make biofuels. But, while those are cultivated specifically to produce fuel, spent coffee grounds are waste. Using these, there’s a real potential to produce a truly sustainable secondgeneration biofuel.” The research discovered that there was a reasonably standard composition and little variation in the relevant physical properties of the fuels, irrespective of the source. This means that all waste coffee grounds are a viable feedstock for producing biodiesel. The researchers suggest that while coffee biodiesel would be a relatively minor part of the energy mix, it could be produced on a small scale by coffee shop chains to fuel vehicles used for deliveries. These same delivery vehicles could be used to collect spent coffee grinds and take them to a central biodiesel production facility to be processed. A small coffee shop producing around 10kg of coffee waste each day would be able to sustain approximately 2 litres of biofuel. In a City such as London that adds up to 200,000 tons per year of waste that could be used instead of petroleum products to power vehicles. Bio-bean, which was founded in London by an architecture student claims to be the first company to industrialise coffee-waste recycling and is operating in London on a small scale. There are a host of substances investigated as potential fuel sources, some commercially viable and others off the wall (at present...?)

at The Ford Fiesta was first launched during the UK’s legendary long hot summer of 1976 and is now the UK’s bestselling car of all time. The Fiesta was originally produced at the all-new, purpose-built factory in Valencia. Henry Ford II personally chose the name (translation - party) to celebrate Ford's new connection with Spain. In the 40 years from 1976-2016, Ford sold 4,339,149 Fiestas in the UK alone, with European Fiesta sales set to surpass 18 million before the end of this year. Over this time, more than one in every 20 cars sold in the UK was a Ford Fiesta. Now in it’s 6th generation, it has undergone numerous facelifts during the decades.

To celebrate this milestone, 40 different models from across the four decades of continuous production drove in convoy last month from Ford’s Engine Plant in Dagenham, Essex to Brighton Mk 1 Race Course for a summer festival celebration of all Ford models. The Dagenham to Brighton drive was open to all Ford vehicles, with each car receiving a unique numbered plaque. Around 300 Fords took part, ranging from Cortinas to Rangers, and to mark the 40th anniversary the plaque numbers Mk 6 1-40 were allocated to Fiestas The Mk 6 Fiesta was the first cover from the four decades. car of the CCT when we started out!

This year’s striking central feature, designed by sculptor Gerry Judah, is celebrating 100 years of BMW and their achievements in Motorsports. Other birthdays celebrated were the 50th anniversaries of the Can-Am Series and of Sir Jack Brabham winning the F1 World Championship in a car bearing his own name. The 40th anniversary of James Hunt’s F1 World Championship, and the 100th Indianapolis 500 race were also honoured at this year’s FoS, rounding off a great line-up of celebrations.

Tesla Updates Radar in Wake of Autonomous Car Crashes. Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk has announced his company is taking steps to make its cars' Autopilot function more effective, even as German officials are reportedly considering requiring all autonomous vehicles be outfitted with black boxes similar to airplanes in the wake of a crash linked with the driverless function. A man died from injuries sustained in a May 7 collision in Florida, when his 2015 Tesla Model S crashed while in Autopilot mode after failing to notice a tractor trailer in its path. It’s understood that the system had difficulty distinguishing the white trailer with the white cloudy sky. This was the first fatal accident in a Tesla vehicle since the company launched its semi-autonomous driving technology last October. In that time, vehicles using Autopilot have travelled more than 130 million miles, according to Tesla's data logs. Two other non-serious crashes involving Tesla Model X SUV's have also hit the headlines in July although Musk was quick to point out that the Autopilot function was switched off in both these cases, meaning that the crash was due to driver error and the crashes may not have occurred if it was on. The World's First Graphene Car. First developed by scientists at the University of Manchester in 2004, graphene is 200 times stronger than steel, but made of sheets of carbon just one atom thick, meaning is is incredibly light (The University won the Nobel Prize for it). The BAC Mono vehicle, with graphene in its panels, was made by Briggs Automotive Company in Speke, Liverpool. The BAC Mono has been road-tested and is being displayed at the National Graphene Institute in Manchester as part of the Science in the City festival from July 22-29. James Baker, graphene business director at The University of Manchester, said: "The car is an excellent example of how graphene can be incorporated into existing products to improve performance".

Koenigsegg One:1 Crash

The manufacturer has examined the car back at its headquarters in Ängelholm and said "The One:1 experienced front axle brake lockup at approximately 170kmph on a section of the track known as Fuchsröhre before hitting the fence at approximately 110kmph. The airbags, fuel shut-oﬀ and other safety systems all deployed as they were designed to do."

The car sustained damage to its exterior panels and sub-frames, but there were no fuel leaks, oil leaks nor hydraulic ﬂuid leaks, which is reassuring, given the force of the impact. The doors are fully operational, and the removable roof remains intact. Luckily, Koenigsegg is conﬁdent the car can be rebuilt with the monocoque chassis forming the basis for the rebuild of the car. Koenigsegg only built seven of its £1.8m One:1 hypercars and the company have said that it would use this car for future record attempts because it belongs to someone 'very close to the company'. The current Nürburgring lap record holder is the Porsche 918 Spyder, which registered a time of 6min 57sec in 2013; the One:1 has a 1341bhp twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine and it is claimed to be capable of 0-62mph in 2.6sec, with a top speed of 273mph.

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2016 Formula One What a month for Lewis Hamilton. A 43 point deficit to Rosberg has been turned into a 6 point advantage in the blink of an eye. It all began in dramatic fashion in Austria where a last lap coming together between the two Mercedes drivers saw Hamilton cross the line in first place while Rosberg, with a damaged car, limped home in fourth. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished second with Kimi Raikkonen third for Ferrari. It had been an exciting race with Rosberg climbing from sixth on the grid to first place but Hamilton was relentless in his pursuit of the leader whose tyres were past their best and frustration got the better of the German in the end and in a bashing match we have now come to expect that the Brit will always get the better of his team mate. On then to Silverstone and Hamiltons home race. A heavy rain shower prior to the race meant a start behind the safety car. This deprived us of an exciting getaway and most of the drivers agreed that conditions were not quite bad enough to warrant the stern start. Be that as it may, Hamilton took full advantage from pole position and never looked like being caught. Rosberg and Verstappen were having a mighty duel for second place and it looked as if Nico had done enough to limit the damage when news came that he had been given a 10 second penalty for a radio communication indiscretion. Verstappen was promoted to second and Rosberg had to lick his wounds in third, the championship gap now down to just one point.

Moto GP We had a most remarkable race in Assen (Holland) where, due to a wet track and some crazy riding, a barely believable result was tossed up. The race was won by Australian rider Jack Miller (who?) on a 2016 spec Honda! The race was stopped after 14 laps because conditions were so bad with Dovizioso leading from Petrucci, Rossi and Marquez. After the restart, when the track had dried out a little, Jonny Hernandez took the lead for a while but then fell off and it was the little known Miller who kept it all together and took the race win with Marquez a happy second and Scott Redding a delighted third. The German round was next and once again no sign of reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo on the podium. Marc Marquez stood on the top step and with it took a 48 point lead in the overall standings. Cal Cruchlow had a great day out to finish second with Dovi third. Rossi and Lorenzo seem to be determined to throw the whole thing away but it’s early days and the remainder of the championship could well be one of the most exciting ever unless, of course, the crazy results continue.

Hungary next and a track where overtaking is next to impossible so pole on the grid is paramount. Rosberg achieved this in questionable circumstances but Hamilton turned the tables at the start and, with the two Red Bulls in close attendance, was first out of the all important Turn 1. From there on it was a procession with Rosberg and Ricciardo joining Hamilton on the Podium. While all this was going on a close eye was being kept on the battle between Ferrari and Red Bull for second place in the constructor’s championship. Ferrari have been ailing of late and Red Bull and Renault are on the up. No more moaning from the team about the French power unit and Adrian Newey is back on board to wave his magic wand over the energy drink containers. Such is the crisis at Maranello that there are talks of Arrivabene getting the sack and Sebastian Vettel looking to escape. Escape to where though? All the good seats are taken for next year unless he takes a punt at McLaren who are showing promise and with all new cars for 2017 who knows what lies in store. My guess is that he will stay put for another year and hope that the Italians can produce a race winner for the coming season. ‘KERB THE GATOR NOT THE ALLOY!’

The One That Got Away by Bruce Rowbotham If you are a classic car fan who has reached a certain age then somewhere in your motoring past there will one car that you regret selling. The one that got away. In 1975 I found a 1959 registered TVR Grantura Series 1 abandoned at a local garage, these cars, like the Lotus Elan, were available as a factory built car or supplied in component form for enthusiasts to build at home to avoid Purchase Tax. This car was a factory built car from their Blackpool base and registered locally in Blackpool as XFR 92. I say “found” as the car was at Beacon Garage in Catterick Village, North Yorkshire and had been recovered by them from the Catterick By Pass on the A1 Great North Road when it had broken down. The rear hub had collapsed and parts for such an unusual car were almost unobtainable. A fire that same year had almost destroyed the TVR factory and put their entire future in doubt. So after months of storage the hapless owner had finally surrendered ownership against the outstanding recovery and storage bill. Beacon Garage were happy to accept my offer of £25 and even delivered it to my home nearby.

TVR was founded by TreVoR Wilkinson in 1947 and took it's name from him. Like many small independent manufacturers it lurched throughout it's history from one financial crisis to another. The Grantura was an attractive 2 seater fibre glass body built on a tubular steel chassis. Just as Colin Chapman did at Lotus, TVR used a mixture of mechanical components available at the time, usually bought as discontinued or surplus stock from the mainstream manufacturers, blended with some parts manufactured themselves in house. Engines were either Ford or MG variants. Therefore there were many mechanical variations within the 100 or so Series One cars produced from 1958 to 1960 because they were built with whatever they had available at the time.

Classic Jaguars to Meet in Northern Spain for the Big One - 2017 Classic Jaguars from all over Spain, France and the United Kingdom will be meeting at the 5 star Parador Leon Hotel in April 2017. The Big One - 2017 as it has become known will be the largest collection of Jaguars ever in Spain. This amazing event is being planned and organized by the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain with the help of JEC France and JEC UK but is open to anyone owning a Jaguar. Geoff and the Trans American Trail Geoff Stacey is riding a dirt bike across the US without using Tarmac roads, a total of 5,000 miles, unsupported, off road, starting in Tennessee and finishing in Oregon. Geoff lost his wife, Sue, suddenly to a hereditary condition in 2007 they had not known she had. Known as "Long QT" or "Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS)", they were not aware that she was at risk and were informed that it can jump generations. After checking their children and grandchildren Geoff discovered his eldest grandson also had the condition. Luckily, the amazing staff at Great Ormond Street hospital (after treatment and 3 operations) have been able to sort him out and he is now healthy and no longer at risk. Geoff is raising money for Great Ormond Street hospital to say thank you for the care his family received. All money raised will be donated to GOSH and he will be covering all of his own costs. Geoff set off on July 21st and this is where he is: Day one of the ride involved 3 river crossings and a trek through Cherokee National Forest, he was pretty worn out when he arrived in Ducktown late afternoon. Geoff was off at 7 the next morning and rode some great trails and saw lots of wildlife. It was hot (100oF) and humid with thunder storms, rain and sun. Ride 30: The Upholsterers As some regular readers will know, there are currently two steeds residing in the "Guiri Towers Stables"; the long serving Gelert and the more recent addition of Gypsy. Long term love (and investment!!) Gelert is a Harley Davidson Softail Heritage Classic with many many shiny parts. Thus if it happens to (God forbid!!) get dirty, it takes about two and half days to clean "Properly"! At just under 350 Kilos, it´s no lightweight either! Add to that fuel, luggage and a pillion and things can soon get little tiring to say the least. I also tend to "Ride" my bikes rather than "bar hop", so mileage was reaching what (for HD "riders"!?) is considered and I quote.."Feckin huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge!!" LOL! So, when the opportunity came along to buy another/second steed, I jumped at the chance. I say opportunity, I mean "permission" of course! Lol! Gypsy is a 1997 Honda VFR 750FV, the last of the 750s! Now, this bike came with a full service history which is A GOOD THING, but had obviously never been garaged/loved which is A BAD THING!! Luckily it´s a 1990´s Honda so the exceptional finish meant it had held up pretty well. The petrolheads out there know how this story goes. New tyres, chain n sprockets, braided hoses and new seals/rubbers for the calipers. Then the forks were sorted out with fresh oil and seals along with fresh fluids and filters for the motor; and of course plenty of polishing saw her ready for another 30 thousand kms. That´s right, she´d only done just over 30 thousand kms in 19 years!!! Despite all this, something still wasn´t quite right! You know? when you can´t put your finger on it, but there´s just "something"....? A friend had a ride on the bike and that´s when we had the "light bulb" moment. The seat!!! Worn, slippery and somehow just not "right"!? Further investigation (took seat off and had a really good look at it! LOL!) revealed that this was NOT original, it had been cut down and recovered, with very thin vinyl that was obviously unsuitable for motorcycles.

So, perusal of InterwebmarketBay and magazine adds etc began. How much? Second hand?!!!!! What to do?!! Then "She who must be feared" said: "What about the chap who fixed the car roof?" Of COURSE!! A call to Tapiceria Basilio confirmed that Yes, they do bike seats! Hurray!! Off to Torrevieja the next day to meet with Basilio and discuss my "needs" and price etc Basilio has been in business for over 12 years (the last 5 in Torrevieja) working with most of the Dealers in the region at some time or other, he has built a solid reputation based on excellent work and good prices. Basilio showed me several different types/patterns of vinyl explaining the positives and negatives of each one before we decided on a specialised motorcycle non-slip vinyl. I thought that was it, but no! Now we had to discuss stitching options. Red, Green, etc or plain black? Double single etc etc? Did I want Stretch panels? Borders? Ribbing? We finally agreed on a little border stitching, some foam re-shaping for rider support and a little extra width for the pillion. They needed the bike for a day (to ensure correct fitting once recovered etc) and then came the biggest shock, the price!? Pardon? That´s less than the cost of a second hand seat?!! GET IN!!!! Result!! The job was done in the time stated, there were no "surprise" extra costs and the workmanship was better than I expected, despite having seen numerous part finished seats from Mercedes, Porsche and even a Maserati in the workshop! Time for a test ride! WOW!!! Who would have thought such a change could be had for such little money!? And the bike LOOKS sooooooo much better too! Most of the other improvements are "hidden", so this really makes a VISIBLE difference and brings a smile to my face every time I look at it too!! The sure sign of customer satisfaction eh? Basilio´s offer the same high level of professionalism for cars, vans, motorhomes and even boats! Obviously, when having one-off custom work done, it´s impossible to have "catalogue" prices.
