A Dream Come True... Bruce Guantlett is enjoying his retirement living in La Hoya on the Costa Blanca. He spends his time out with a walking group, working on his house, lazying around his pool and at the beach. Inside, however, he harbours a burning desire; to drive a Lamborghini. Aged 71, his dream came true. We met up with Bruce and his infectious enthusiasm and true delight at achieving his goal made us want to share it with you. Bruce’s love of the Lamborghini started when he saw the film ‘The Italian Job’ in 1969. A Lamborghini Miura cruises through the Alps in the opening scene before disappearing into a tunnel and exploding into a ball of flames.

Then it was over to the museum and Bruce saw his first Miura and it was every bit as beautiful as he thought.

The Italian Job Miura Earlier this year, his other half arranged a holiday for them. The whole thing was a surprise for Bruce, he had no idea where he was going. After a flight to Madrid from Alicante, they then flew onto Barcelona where they were collected by a limousine and taken to a hotel, where Bruce assumed they would be staying for their holiday. Not so, the following day they flew into Venice and a motor launch collected them and took them to a hotel where they stayed for 4 or 5 days. A train to Rome was next on the agenda and he couldn’t believe all the modes of transport he had been on! 4 enjoyable days were spent in the heart of Rome before another limo appeared and took them to the airport and a flight to Bologna. They got in a black Mercedes the next morning and went to...Sant'Agata! At this point Bruce knew where they were going and broke down in tears of happiness, he just couldn't believe it!

Miura Roadster Once lunch was over, it was time for the main event, the test drive. The car was a white Huracan and it took place on real roads. After a briefing from the English representative from Bull Bar, Bruce got into the drivers side and revelled in the moment. He could feel the power running through the pedal as he slowly drove away. After a short time of getting to grips with the car, he stopped at the start of a long straight and was told to floor it! The roar of the engine and the responsiveness of the car were amazing and a speechless Bruce soon found his words as the thrill of the ride engulfed him. What an experience! Go do it he says! The Factory at Sant'Agata A guided tour of the factory was first on the list and while the guide explained the processes involved, Bruce watched the cars being made in front of him. 5 and a half are made each day and all are already sold. MOTORS IN THE NEWS Bristol Cars Unveils First New Model in Years. The luxury car manufacturer which was rescued from administration has unveiled its first new model in more than a decade. The Bullet was built to celebrate the founding of the company 70 years ago and production is set to begin early next year. Bristol Cars said the two-seater car will cost "under £250,000". The firm was bought out by technology company Frazer Nash after it went into administration in 2011.

At the Silverstone Classic auctions last month, amongst the Ferraris, Porsches and ultra collectible motors was a one-owner, 7,986-mile 1989 Peugeot 205 GTI. It smashed the world record fee paid for one of these eighties hot hatch heroes, selling for £30,983, which was £12,000 more than the higher estimate. But to some it didn't come as much of a surprise, with 205 GTI prices soaring in the last 12 months, proving there's a real knack for picking up modern classic cars just before they take off in value.

The One That Got Away by Bruce Rowbotham If you are a classic car fan who has reached a certain age then somewhere in your motoring past there will one car that you regret selling. The one that got away. In 1975 I found a 1959 registered TVR Grantura Series 1 abandoned at a local garage, these cars, like the Lotus Elan, were available as a factory built car or supplied in component form for enthusiasts to build at home to avoid Purchase Tax. This car was a factory built car from their Blackpool base and registered locally in Blackpool as XFR 92. I say “found” as the car was at Beacon Garage in Catterick Village, North Yorkshire and had been recovered by them from the Catterick By Pass on the A1 Great North Road when it had broken down. The rear hub had collapsed and parts for such an unusual car were almost unobtainable. A fire that same year had almost destroyed the TVR factory and put their entire future in doubt. So after months of storage the hapless owner had finally surrendered ownership against the outstanding recovery and storage bill. Beacon Garage were happy to accept my offer of £25 and even delivered it to my home nearby. Looking back now, their compound was always teaming with broken down or accident damaged cars from the 50's and 60's that they struggled to get rid of - an unbelievable gold mine of classics in waiting.

re-splined the stub axles in his meal breaks and was paid off with a few pints. In reality the research and subsequent repairs were taking me a long time for all the usual reasons, with lack of money and lack of time heading up the list. Then I had a stroke of luck. My wife went into hospital to give birth to our daughter. Nowadays giving birth is like a rapid Pit-Stop with new mums and babies often home on the same day, whereas old midwifery traditions endured in 1977 and even for a normal birth my wife was in hospital for 8 days. With 2 weeks leave from work and only needing to commit one hour per day for visiting I pressed ahead with the restoration at a cracking pace. The car was finished just before she came home and not one visiting session was missed. Although I did leave a few oily hand marks on the cot sheets. Alas as you see from the photos, a TVR Grantura is not a practical family car and a new baby meant even less time and money was available for indulging in my big lad's toys when a Mk 3 Ford Cortina Estate was our practical family transport. I never got to enjoy the TVR properly on the road and these faded photos were taken in 1978 when I was giving it a final test drive at RAF Dishforth prior to selling it. I sold the car for £350 and made almost 10 times my original investment. Not too shabby in financial terms but try and find one now for less than £10.000. It's the one that got away.......

TVR was founded by TreVoR Wilkinson in 1947 and took it's name from him. Like many small independent manufacturers it lurched throughout it's history from one financial crisis to another. The Grantura was an attractive 2 seater fibre glass body built on a tubular steel chassis. Just as Colin Chapman did at Lotus, TVR used a mixture of mechanical components available at the time, usually bought as discontinued or surplus stock from the mainstream manufacturers, blended with some parts manufactured themselves in house. Engines were either Ford or MG variants. Therefore there were many mechanical variations within the 100 or so Series One cars produced from 1958 to 1960 because they were built with whatever they had available at the time. My car had front disc brakes from an Austin Healey 100/6. An ingeniously adapted steering box from a left hand drive Ford 103E Ford Anglia, that was turned upside down to make it compatible for right hand drive. It was fitted with a non original cross flow engine and gearbox were from a Ford 1600cc GT. The suspension was all independent by torsion bars. The rear axle consisted of a BMC B series differential mounted to the rear floor with shortened half shafts and stub axles from an Austin A40 Somerset. TVR had cast their own uprights to carry the hubs. It was the stub axle that had sheered and had caused the breakdown. . Throughout the next year I toured scrap yards and sourced the rear axle from an A40 Somerset. A friend who worked at a local engineering shop cut down the half shafts and

THE WORLD’S BIGGEST MOTOR RACING FESTIVAL 29-31 JULY 2016

Showtime Special The famous Grand Prix circuit hosted drivers from 28 different countries competing in 20 nostalgic races covering the full spectrum of historic motor sport. The opening day featured two additional sessions for Legends of Modern Formula One and 90’s Endurance Legends. On top of nearly 12 hours of track action, crowds were treated to some great family entertainment, including a fun fair, and rock concerts featuring The Boomtown Rats and The Stranglers.

Silverstone Classic is renowned for celebrating important anniversaries and 2016 is no different. To mark the 50th year since the 1966 World Cup Final between England and Germany, six stars were drafted in to recreate the home nation’s famous victory. England, in red were represented by International footballers John Barnes, Steve Hodge as well as John Stiles (son of World Cup hero Nobby). The Germans, in white lined up with ex-Formula 1 stars Damon Hill, Johnny Herbert and Anthony Davidson.

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2016 Formula 1 normally takes precedence in my monthly column but this month the spotlight is firmly on the World Rally Championship and Moto GP and with good reason too. WRC The WRC circus landed in Finland for what is generally regarded as the jewel in the crown of the rally season, often dubbed the Finnish Grand Prix such are the speeds attained over the smooth gravel roads and flying jumps on what was once called the Rally of the 1000 Lakes. Irish eyes were smiling at the Finnish finish when Kris Meeke from Dungannon, Co Tyrone (with Kerryman Paul Nagle on the notes) took a famous victory ahead of the home favourite Jari Matti Latvala. To add icing to the Irish cake Craig Breen from Waterford drove his DS3 into third place and surely put himself in pole position for a factory drive in the Citroen team for 2017 when the French manufacturer resumes a full assault on the WRC. Championship leader Sebastien Ogier put his VW in a ditch early on and lost 16 minutes and any chance of victory and in doing so, opened the door for the remaining crews to battle for the win. Meeke had the speed and composure to lead throughout and Latvala had no answer to the flying DS3. Behind these two Mikkelsen, Paddon, Neuville and Breen had a mighty battle for third place and it was the relative novice, Breen, who came out best ahead of his more experienced rivals. In winning, Meeke set a new record for highest average speed on a WRC round, a cool 131 km/h. The celebrations at the finish were emotional, heartfelt and fully deserved.

Germany was next on the rally calendar and the first all tarmac round over the tank proving grounds and vineyards of the Mosel region. Citroen gave this one a miss and so it was left to the VWs, Hyundais and Fords to battle it out. Mikkelsen led from the start and Latvala retired with a broken gearbox but it wasn’t long before Ogier stamped his authority on proceedings and built a comfortable lead which he held to the finish. Mikkelsen was overhauled by the Hyundais and it was Spain’s Danny Sordo who finished runner up by 0.1 sec ahead of team mate Neuville. It was Ogier’s first win since Sweden six months ago and he now holds a comfortable lead in the championship. Kris Meeke in Finland

Moto GP In Moto GP there was reason for celebration in both Austria and the Czech Republic. In the Red Bull Ring Ducati celebrated their first win since 2010 and not only that, they finished 1-2 with Andrea Iannone getting the better of Andrea Dovizioso by virtue of the fact that he choose to run on soft tyres and was able to make them last the distance. Lorenzo was third ahead of Rossi and maintained his championship second place behind Marquez. Casey Stoner was the last Ducati winner and he was there to celebrate with the team who, if they continue to progress, could be a formidable team in 2017 with Dovi and Lorenzo on board. In Brno all eyes were on Britain’s Cal Crutchlow who scored a famous victory in a thrilling race. Riding a satellite LCR Honda, the Coventry man took his first ever GP win by virtue of the fact that he choose to run on hard wet weather tyres while all around him ran softs in the expectation that the track would dry out and they would change bikes and finish on dry tyres. The track dried out all right but not sufficiently to change and Cal rode a masterful race to take a first GP victory for a British rider since the great Barry Sheene 35 years ago and did so riding bike number 35! In the early stages of the race Ducatis were first, second and third but Crutchlow was relentless and picked them off one by one and had a huge margin to spare at the finish. Rossi was second ahead of Marquez who still leads the championship but with Rossi now breathing down his neck. Formula One The German Grand Prix was a lacklustre affair. Hamilton got a great start while Rosberg, from pole, did not and the World Champion led from Verstappen, Ricciardo, Rosberg and Vettel. Rosberg climbed to second but was then penalised 5 seconds for an illegal move on Verstappen. The only other change came about when Ricciardo got ahead of Verstappen and that’s how it remained ‘til the end with Rosberg finishing fourth ahead of Vettel. Hamilton now leads the series by 19 points and looks good for another championship. Red Bull have upped their game and now look to be clearly ahead of Ferrari in the fight for second place in the constructors title race. Next stop is Belgium and the annual pilgrimage to the shrine which is Spa Francorchamps. The weather is always a factor here but dry, damp or wet the flat out (nearly) blast through Eau Rouge is always one of the highlights of the season.

"The Dream of Laura" is the 4th Exhibition Solidarity and on Saturday you can watch a gymkhana put on by the Mini Club as well as concerts by local groups. Sunday is the event itself featuring one of the finest and largest concentrations of of classic cars, sportscars, motorcycles and trucks. This year's event is to help Laura, who is a 4 year old girl from Almoradi who suffers from a disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). It is a pathologic that attacks the nerve cells that are in the spinal cord. Rehabilitation treatments and muscle stimulation are very expensive and the initiative of Virauto is to raise funds for her and her family. After a couple of days rest and a new bike for Bill (he blew his engine) we crossed into Idaho. Idaho City consisted of 1 store, 1 gas station and a bar! Up and over the Cascade mountains, 240 miles of sand, dust and deep gravel. Up one mountain then down and back up the next, through dense forest. It was hard going.

Geoff crossed the deserts in Utah and then went out onto the salt flats. Guy Martin was running out there trying to set 2 world records so he did not leave until after 11 then rode 170 hard miles across the desert.

After a night of Wine and Gin cheers Captains Wine (Malcolm) and Gin (Austin), it was somewhat surprising to find everybody up and about (fairly) early?! Well done boys and girls! And so..our "Tour of the Picos" began for real: The N-621 is poorly surfaced, but on reflection this is perhaps no bad thing? It keeps your speed down a bit and as we wound up the mountains and through the clouds, it quickly became apparent that a little more velocity might be unwise and may end in tears. This is mainly because the views DEMAND attention, sight seeing and speed are uneasy bedfellows folks! On and back down the other side of the mountains, and the temperature hit a heady 12 degrees!! Perhaps Wordsworth or Keats and their ilk would have the words to describe this small oasis of paradise in Northern Spain, but it´s mind numbing atmosphere of serenity and exquisiteness is way beyond my modest ability! Panes, just 20 minutes from Santander, had us taking a left onto the AS-114 and even more amazingly awesome stunning (and any other adjectives you can think of) scenery/views. Now, for the BIG ONE!! Our band of merry adventurers took the AS-626 up and up to Covadonga then left onto an unspecified road and up and up to the highest point of the Picos accessible to motor vehicles. Through the clouds again with sheer drops to either side at times..this was something else! A real "bucket list" ride!! The summit car park (I use the term very loosely!) was 1998 meters high! Los Lagos Enol and Ercina are so beautiful and almost made you want to cry! The views and atmosphere had all falling silent for a short time, the sense of awe only being broken when we realised we had to go back down! Gulp!! Ride 31: The Picos After meeting up with the Posse at El Realengo, we set off north/northwest on the A7 then the A31, A3 towards Madrid. The A3 is a fairly unremarkable road but with it´s good surface and relatively little traffic we were soon making good time. Rob set a fair pace and we soon encountered the usual "city traffic madness" on the Madrid ring road. Having negotiated the worst of it, the speed soon picked up again. Rob was there, right in front of Speedy (Jools) when her pannier opened and spewed all her best underwear over three lanes!! A weekend going commando for you then Jools?
