Festive greetings from us all here as we look forward to the run up to Christmas. Once again we have our annual Christmas Quiz for you to test what you’ve remembered from the Costa Car Trader throughout the year. We have the all important answers to Richard O’Rourke’s quiz we set last month and of course announce the winner. We’ve our last report from Formula One as we crown a worthy Champion. What a great season it was and we look forward to next years with much anticipation, especially because former World Champions Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso are moving teams and what will happen with Jenson Button - will he get a seat next year? The second Formula E race took place in Malaysia and we have a report on all the action, although thankfully it wasn’t as dramatic as the last race! We continue our Top Ten Renaults and look at some some rather ugly concept and production cars in our fun feature on page 7. Almoradi hosted it’s Car Show once again in November and we have photos of some of the stunning and souped up cars on display. Other local events can be found on Page 18. The all new Skoda Fabia Combi was revealed at the Paris Motor Show in October this year and is the Czech firm’s new supermini “estate” version. The front view is pure Fabia hatch featuring the crisp lines and angular lights that Skoda hopes will give it a timeless appeal.
The engine range is borrowed from the hatchback which includes a 1.0ltr three cylinder with 74bhp and a 1.2 TSI producing 109bhp. The diesel line up consists solely of 1.4TDI three cylinder units, offering between 74bhp and 104bhp.
Only the extended roofline and long rear overhangs differentiate it from the hatchback. Skoda have concentrated on making the boot as usable as possible; the floor is wider, the seats fold flat and the loading sill is just 611mm off the ground.
There are plenty of hi-tech features available too, including keyless entry and an infotainment system which allows you to mirror your smartphone’s screen and control its functions through the in-car system..

Aurora The Aurora was built in 1957 by a New York priest who was trying to make the ultimate safety vehicle. It never took off, maybe because it broke down 15 times on the way to the press conference. The one prototype was restored in 2005 and can be seen at the Beaulieu Motor Museum in England.

Smoking in cars. From October 2015 a new law banning smoking in cars with children comes into force in the UK. Enforcement officers will be able to issue a £50 fixed penalty notice both for smoking in the vehicle and failure to prevent others from smoking in the vehicle. If the case goes to court, the maximum fine will soar to £800 for someone caught smoking carrying a child and £10,000 for a driver who fails to prevent someone else smoking, it will apply to anyone carrying children in a car, not just the parents. The ban follows an historic vote in February, when MPs overwhelmingly backed plans to make it illegal to light up in a car in England, punishable by a fine or points on a motorist's licence.
Race Of Champions. This year’s Race Of Champions will take place at the Bushy Park circuit in Barbados on December 13-14. The Caribbean venue has seen off a strong field of rivals to win the right to stage the annual end of season motor sport event. A host of driving legends from the major forms of motor sport will assemble to discover who’s the fastest of them all. The event brings together the greatest drivers from Formula 1, World Rally, Le Mans, MotoGP, Nascar, IndyCar, Touring Cars, the X-Games and sets them all free to battle head-to head in identical machinery. Some of the cars will then stay on at the Bushy Park Circuit, which will host a range of new and unique ROC driving experiences throughout 2015.
Lagonda Taraf Super Saloon. Aston Martin’s new first class travel was unveiled last month in Dubai. The industry has been buzzing about the car since Aston Martin revealed earlier this year it was not only reviving the Lagonda badge (last seen in 1976) but that the model was going to be sold exclusively in the Middle East. It was announced that you could only buy it by invitation and that there would be a limited number, thought to be 200. Aston wasn’t revealing the price but is thought to be about £600,000 and even though it is a Middle East only proposition at the moment, it would seem the company hasn’t ruled out the possibility of this stunning new sports car hitting the showrooms in the UK. The Taraf draws lots of inspiration from the famous William Towns designed Lagonda of 1976 (see page 7!!), which was predominantly sold in the Middle East. Only 10€

2014 2nd November Austin, USA Nico Rosberg took pole after Lewis Hamilton had problems with his brakes in qualifying, a disappointment to the Briton who had been faster in the practice sessions. Nico converted the pole into the lead and held onto it in the early stages of the race, with Lewis staying close behind. Nico pitted on lap 15, with Lewis a lap later, and emerged 2.8 seconds behind. By lap 20, Lewis had caught up to be within a second of his teammate. On lap 24, Lewis made a brave move down the inside of the German at Turn 12 and took the lead.

Nico tried to fight back, but Lewis extended the gap to over 2 seconds and controlled it to the flag. The victory was Lewis's 5th consecutive win and 10th of the season. His 32nd career win, meant he beat Nigel Mansell's record for wins by a Brit. He has also equalled the tally of Fernando Alonso, putting them on equal fifth on the all-time F1 winners' list. The 1978 World Champion Mario Andretti carried out the podium interviews and finally agreed to let Lewis borrow his Stetson.
9th November Sao Paulo, Brazil Nico Rosberg was on pole once again with Lewis Hamilton second on the grid. Nico held first place, but Lewis saw an opportunity when Nico pitted for the second time on lap 26. Lewis stayed out and set the fastest lap to close the 2 second gap. The Mercedes engineers calculated that his first lap had not been enough to leapfrog him ahead of Nico, so decided to keep him out for one more lap to give him extra time to build the advantage he needed. However, this proved costly to Lewis, since the tyres were finished and he spun off. He recovered to pit and came out 7 seconds behind. He spent the rest of the race closing the gap and although his car was faster, he was never close enough to make a passing attempt. Nico took his 5th win of the season and closed the gap to 17 points. Felipe Massa took third, despite a 5 second penalty for speeding in the pit lane and pulling into the McLaren pits by mistake at his final stop. The two incidents cost him time but he was still comfortably able to hold off McLaren's Jenson Button. After the race Lewis said: "Ultimately it [the spin] cost me the win. I locked the rear and went wide. No-one's mistake but mine." Nico wins in Brazil

23rd November Yas Marina, Abu Dhabi Pole-king Nico was again the man at the front, but as the lights went out it was Lewis who made a fantastic start and flew past Nico. Lewis stretched out a lead to over 1 second and maintained it until the first round of pit stops. Then Nico had a problem; he lost his ERS and hybrid power, and fell back down the positions unable to do anything about it. The William's were having a great race and Felipe Massa led for a large part of the race before pitting late for a set Super Softs. The final ten laps saw Felipe closing in on Lewis, but the Brit was determined to win the race and held on to claim the win and World Championship. Valtteri Bottas finished in third, making it a double podium for Williams. Daniel Ricciardo finished in fourth after a pit lane start due to Red Bull's exclusion from qualifying for using an illegal front wing. Jenson Button came in fifth as he contemplates his future in F1. Sebastian Vettel took eighth on his last appearance for Red Bull. Nico finished out of the points and chose not to retire at the request of his team, wanting to finish the race. He congratulated Lewis in the podium waiting room after the race. It was Lewis´s 11th win of the season and became the fourth Briton to win two world titles; level with Jim Clark and Graham Hill, and one behind Sir Jackie Stewart. Lewis commented "This is the greatest day of my life".
Lewis Hamilton was born in Stevenage, Hertfordshire in 1985 and began karting in 1993. Aged 10, he won the British Karting Championship (Cadet Class) and STP Karting Championship. In 1995, he approached McLaren team principal Ron Dennis and told him, "I want to race for you one day, I want to race for McLaren." In 1998, Hamilton is signed by McLaren and the team’s partners Mercedes-Benz to become part of their Young Driver Support Programme. Lewis continued winning at Karting, taking the World Title aged 15. After successful stints in Formula A & Formula 3, he started in F1 in 2007, losing the title in his rookie year by only 1 point. In 2008 he achieved his first F1 title with McLaren and has now taken it again with Mercedes.

Sam Bird celebrates his first win in Formula E 22nd November 2014: Putrajaya, Malaysia Nicolas Prost claimed his second consecutive pole position but started from 11th due to the 10-place grid penalty for causing an avoidable collision in Beijing. Oriol Servia inherited pole and initially kept the lead. The race saw a couple of safety car periods to clear debris from Amlin Aguri’s Katherine Legge and Trulli's Michela Cerruti crash and to remove Venturi’s Nick Heidfeld’s car when he was knocked out of the race, just as he was last time. Virgin's Sam Bird took the lead and opened up a gap between him and the rest of the field. He changed cars later than everyone else and won by a decent margin ahead of championship-leader Lucas di Grassi and Sebastien Buemi.

Las Maromas Industrial Estate, Almoradí, was the venue for the Exhibition of Classic and Sports Cars on Sunday November 9th which attracted a wide range of cars and a huge crowd of spectators. The event was supporting the Cristina charity and the organisers were delighted with the response they received on the day. There were over 100 cars on show and these included Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Bentley, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes and many more. The Seat 600 club brought along a wide selection of their timeless little cars and Porsche Club Murcia also turned up with a fantastic array of the German classics, old and new. Some noteworthy cars were a Supercharged Auburn, an Alpine Renault A310, an Alfa Romeo GTA and a VW Karmann Ghia. Two highly modified cars which were hardly recognisable were a Dodge Viper and an Audi TT. My personal favourite was the Lambo LP560 but we are all allowed to dream! Richard O’Rourke

Marc Marquez signed off his 2014 season with a victory and a new world record for most victories in a single campaign in the top class, beating Mick Doohan’s 12 wins set in 1997. Valentino Rossi took second with Dani Pedrosa in third. The result sees Valentino Rossi take the runner-up spot in the championship.

Following the race in Valencia, the 2014 MotoGP season was brought to an end at the FIM Awards Ceremony. Double MotoGP Champion Marc Marquez received his MotoGP World Champion trophy, while his friend Tito Rabat was presented with the Moto2 World Championship trophy. Taking the Moto3 World Championship title was Marc's brother Alex Marquez. Alex (who is only 18 years old) won Moto3 Rookie of the Year last year after competing his first season in the World Championship. His 2014 title was confirmed with a third place in Valencia and the Marquez family had a new World Champion to celebrate. Alex Marquez will move up to Moto2 in 2015, where he hopes to continue his progress and one day challenge his brother Marc in MotoGP. Alex and Marc Marquez are the first pair of brothers to win World titles in the 66 year history of the world championship series.
