As you would have noticed, in recent years some of our beloved little cars have slowly increased in size and here we have no exception. The once little Fiat 500 has got bigger and bigger and now it’s gone to the extreme. 2017 will be the year of the hot crossover and Fiat will be one of the first makers to join the party with an Abarth version of its new 500X. The new flagship model will be fitted with big wheels, lowered suspension and deep spoilers. There will also be a sports exhaust and plenty of scorpion badges and graphics.

official release dates or sugestions of prices for the Abarth model yet. However, if we was to hazard a guess we expect it to be up around the 30.000€ mark. It should be expected on the market early 2017.

Power is expected to come from the 1.4-litre fourcylinder turbocharged engine used in Fiat’s 124 Spider. However, power is expected to be increased to around 200bhp to help compensate for the extra weight of this larger 500X. The Abarth’s chief rival will be the Nissan Juke Nismo RS.

For Sale: £45 million. A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO is expected to become the world's most expensive car after it was put up for sale at £45 million. Number 2 of only 36 made, it was raced at Le Mans and Sebring and, despite being more than 50 years old, is capable of 0 to 60mph in around six seconds and has a top speed of more than 170mph. The Ferrari has now come onto the open market for the first time in 20 years and is being sold by John Collins, who runs Ascot-based Ferrari specialist Talacrest. It is thought to be the first time in more than 20 years a GTO has been openly marketed in the UK. Bonhams sold a Ferrari 250 GTO at a US auction in 2014 when it went for $38 million (£30 million). The last time a GTO was auctioned before this was in 1990. With a £45 million asking price, this 250 GTO is 245 times more expensive than a brand-new Ferrari 488 and 4,500 times the price of a Ford Fiesta! The 200mph All-Electric Jaguar I-Pace. Jaguar unveiled its £60,000 all-electric car last month. The car has 200hp electric motors fitted to each axle giving a top speed of 200mph and a 0-60mph time of four seconds. Careful drivers should be able to travel up to 310 miles on a single charge. Jaguar says it has ‘torn up the rule book’ to create a svelte new 5-seater that combines ‘supercar looks, sports car performance and sports utility space’ in a vehicle that can be charged at home from the domestic mains. Design director Ian Callum said “This will be Jaguar’s first-ever battery-powered electric vehicle and opens a new chapter in the history of our legendary brand.”

In other words are any of their innovations adopted into everyday production vehicles? The answer is YES, a number of engineering firsts from the track are of benefit to the manin-the street driver. Some of the more successful inventions are described here.
Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS):
Traction Control System:
KERS has been used by all teams in F1 and many have suffered teething problems with its use. It stores the energy wasted during braking inside a mechanical fly wheel or a special battery pack for later use. Volvo, Mazda and Jaguar all have plans to incorporate into some of their production models, with the Volvo S60 T5 prototype leading the way.

Carbon Fibre:
A system whereby the car's on board computer measures the amount of wheel rotation during acceleration to aid grip and stability of the vehicle. If the sensors recognise that one wheel is turning faster than the others it instructs the brake controlling that wheel to slow down the wheel allowing the driver to regain control. This was subsequently banned in 2008 by FIA the organisation that introduces the rules and regulations for international motorsport. It was felt that it aided the driver allowing a less skilled driver towards an improved perfomance, however it is now widely used in production cars.

Carbon fibre is superior to current materials used in car production since it has a much increased weight to strength ratio, the downside being cost. The first F1 car to incorporate it was the McLaren MP4/1. In mass production lines it is mainly used for detailing the dashboard, wheels and interior panels.

Active Suspension System:
The Active Suspension System controls the vertical movement of the wheels relative to the chasis and was introduced by Williams in 1992 allowing the car's suspension settings to be changed for every curve on the track. It was the introduction of inboard computers that made this possible. In your private car it allows the manufacturer to offer “comfort” and/or “sports” settings. Nissan are using active suspension for safety reasons in the Infinite M vehicle which stiffens the suspension under emergency braking conditions. Active Suspension System

This article has only shown a small number of innovations that have made it to the production line. Others include in-car computers with sensors, semi-automatic gear boxes with paddle changing to name but a few. Is the cost of F1 sport justified? Well it is certainly enjoyed by millions around the globe and does advance the development of the motor car beyond what would be possible outside the sport. It is similar to technological advances made during war time i.e. The Tank in 1916, rehabilitation following life changing injuries in Afghanistan and Iraq, or even space exploration using freeze drying techniques and the use of solar power within the Space Station. Without these catalysts innovation would undoutably have been at a slower pace, due in part to lower funding and lack of impetus. Advances need a problem solving approch to succeed, in F1 this is a combination of safety, speed and fuel economy together with emerging technological discoveries.

A Toy You Never Grow Out Of by Bruce Rowbotham Train Sets, Meccano, Air pistols and Subuteo all figured at some point in every boy's childhood wish list of Christmas toys, and whilst technology has moved on, still sitting up there at the top table is Scalextric, now celebrating 60 years of racing on living room floors. My grandchildren have their X Station Play-Boxes, their dexterity with the controls amazes me, but when they come to visit us they are still eager to leave the screen of virtual reality for a while and try the tactile reality of my old Scalextric track. I got my first track for Christmas in 1960. The early cars and track were crude so I soon leaned about maintenance and repairs. Not just the routine replacement of pick-up braids and cleaning carpet fluff from the axles, but also using the silver foil paper from tubes of Polo Mints to repair bad connections between track joints and the major reconstruction of cars that had been squashed underfoot by aged clumsy aunts. The importance of electrical continuity, high resistance and voltage drops all began to mean something even if I didn't know they had these technical names. I remember playing with my first set continuously on Christmas Day until I had to stop for 10 minutes whilst my parents watched the Queen's Christmas Speech on our black and white TV. Shortly afterwards our next door neighbour called in to see if we were suffering interference on our TV picture as theirs had been almost unwatchable until the Queen's broadcast. It seems early cars lacked adequate electrical suppressors for TV. It wasn't long before the back art of home tuning beckoned. Production quality on tyres wasn't great, so tyres were spun up against a board of fine sandpaper that ensured they were not only perfectly round but also gave maximum contact area with the track, then the rubber could be sprayed with WD 40. This caused the rubber to decompose slightly and become extra sticky to aid grip. Finally on short and tight living room layouts, acceleration was more important than top speed so an extra session on the sandpaper reduced the tyre circumference, lowered the gearing and improved the acceleration. The old copper half-penny coins (½ d) could be sellotaped over the back axle to aid traction or better still, a small magnet glued inside the chassis floor directly over the metal tracks. My dad kept a small tin of Duraglit wool for polishing the chrome on our car, it was perfect for keeping the metal tracks clean and I was just as extravagant with this as I was with his WD40.... Scalextric caters for every taste, Formula One, Saloon Car Racing, GT and Endurance Racing, Historic Racing, Truck Racing and even Motorcycles. Trackside scenery and Pit Lane dioramas can elevate a hobby to an obsession if you are not careful.
And if you think Scalextric is just for kids, then it may surprise you to know that Formula One supremo Ross Brawn developed his early competitive nature and his technical and business skills through designing, building and racing 1/32nd scale slot cars. In the in the early 1960's he raced all over Europe. His cars were finely made and trimmed to weigh less than 4 ounces, this developed into a business with his father called HB Products - Hough and Brawn - with Ross mainly designing and building the slot car chassis. Ross left slot racing behind when he got into full-size motor sport in 1976. To this day you can still alter the stiffness of the chassis floor platform thus influencing the suspension by tightening or loosening the screws that secure the body to the chassis. A body tightly screwed to the chassis platform has no “flex” or “give” and is more prone to jump out of the slot. In 2009 Top Gear's James May explored Scalextric in his Toy Story series. He built the largest Scalextric track ever at 2.95 miles long on the site of the Brooklands Racetrack, then as a follow up last year he held a competition to break the world land speed record for a Scalextric car. As the cars are built to 1/32 scale he used a straight track with a marked section of 165 feet long, representing in scale one mile. Competitors were timed as they entered and left the “measured mile.” The old record of 458 mph (scaled speed) was well and truly smashed when a Scalextric Porsche car was timed at 696.6 mph. THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2016 Formula One The Mexico Grand Prix was a boring affair for an hour and a half with Hamilton ahead of Rosberg but in the final 20 minutes the whole thing came alive with Vettel catching Verstappen in third place and Ricciardo catching Vettel. After a bit of forceful jousting Verstappen crossed the line in third but in the cool down room was told that he had been penalised and that Vettel was third. He stood on the podium with Hamilton and Rosberg only to be told later that he had been demoted to fifth giving Ricciardo third place. On then to the penultimate race in Brazil with Rosberg holding a 19 point lead over Hamilton. Rain on race day threw a spanner in the works and suited Lewis rather than Nico who is a bit suspect on a slippery track. The race was interrupted seven times (5 safety cars and 2 red flags) because of crashes caused by the Pirelli wet weather tyres not being able to cope with fairly moderate rain. The race finally got cracking when the rain abated a little and Hamilton led from Rosberg, Perez, Verstappen, Vettel and Ricciardo. The two Red Bulls stopped for intermediate tyres which didn’t work and stopped again to change back to wets leaving Verstappen in 15th place with 14 laps to go. Then began one of the most remarkable drives ever seen in an F1 as the young Dutchman overtook car after car, never putting a wheel wrong and finding grip on parts of the track which none of the other drivers dared to use. On the final few laps he passed Vettel and Perez to finish third and was loudly cheered on the podium by the local fans who see in him a true successor to their hero, Ayrton Senna. Another local favourite, Felipe Massa, also received a hero’s welcome, even though he too was caught out by the conditions and crashed out in his final Brazilian GP.
The showdown in Abu Dhabi was just that with the destination of the World Championship going down to the very last lap. Hamilton led from pole position with Rosberg comfortable in second place which was where he needed to be. Verstappen got in on the act when he stayed out on the harder tyres and after the first round of pit stops found himself ahead of Rosberg. Nico caught and passed the Red Bull with a really brave move considering how much he had to lose and as the race unfolded Vettel, on soft tyres, passed Raikkonen and then Verstappen and was pressuring the Mercs. Hamilton slowed the pace in the hope of backing Rosberg into the Ferrari and Red Bull and this tactic nearly worked but not quite. Lewis won the race and Nico fended off the hard charging Vettel to finish second and in doing so deservedly won the Championship. The race marked the retirements of Jenson Button and Felipe Massa, two very fine racers and two really nice guys. They will be missed. Rosberg follows in the footsteps of his father Keke who won for Williams 34 years ago and joins Graham and Damon Hill and the only father/son World Champion. Coincidentally the Hills were also separated by a 34 year gap. Fate or what?

Nico celebrates becoming World Champion
WRC Big news from the world of rallying was the withdrawal of VW from the 2017 season. This news followed fast on the news that Audi would not be taking part in the World Endurance Championship next year so it looks like the costly emissions issue is coming home to roost. The 2017 cars had already been built and tested and drivers contracts signed and sealed so it looks like a very sudden and drastic decision by the VW top brass. This of course leaves Ogier, Latvala and Mikkelsen without drives for next year and with most of the teams already decided it calls into question where these top drivers will end up. Ogier to Ford? Latvala to Toyota? Who knows! Meanwhile the Wales Rally GB (or the RAC in old money) took place in unusually mild conditions and was won at a canter by Sebastien Ogier in the VW Polo who now joins Hannu Mikkola and Peter Solberg as a four time winner. Ott Tanak kept Ogier honest throughout in his Ford Fiesta and finished a good second ahead of Neuville and Paddon in the Hyundais. The final round of the championship took place in Australia where VW were hoping to end their participation with a swansong win. Sebastien Ogier was expected to set the pace but it was Andreas Mikkelsen who took the fight to the four times champion and won in a straight fight with a stunning drive with Ogier second and Thierry Neuville third for Hyundai, clinching second place in the championship in the process. Moto GP The penultimate race took place on a wet track in Malaysia and, with the championship decided in favour of Marc Marquez, the spotlight was on the fight for second and Viñales Iannone in Australiaand third places. Marquez, Crutchlow crashed out leaving Dovizioso in the lead from Rossi and Lorenzo and that’s how it ended with Dovi becoming the ninth different race winner this season. The final round took place in Valencia where Lorenzo dominated qualifying and the race to sign off on his Yamaha career with an emphatic win while securing third in the standings behind Marquez and Rossi. In the race itself, Marquez made a brave effort to catch Lorenzo but ran out of laps on his more suitable harder tyres while Iannone finished third ahead of Rossi. All change next year with Lorenzo off to Ducati, Vinales to Yamaha and Iannone to Suzuki so lots to look forward to.

Ride 33: The Alhambra Palace You know how you keep saying "Yeah, we´ll have to go there!" but never get round to visiting the place in question, even though it´s only a short distance away? Well, that´s what myself and ´she who must be feared´ had been saying for the last 14 years!! The location in question was The Alhambra Palace one of the "..modern day 8 wonders of the world..." So, when a significant anniversary came up, talk turned to a "mini break/weekend away" as it always does with us. There is NOTHING better than riding a motorcycle (the bigger the better!!LOL!) with your "babe" on the back heading towards a much anticipated destination for a couple of days R&R. Granada is a VERY easy city to get to, being well served by the Autovia system etc. We took the A30 to Murcia and then the A-7/E-15, before picking up the A-92 near Puerto Lumbreras. Despite being "motorways", this route´s fairly scenic, especially once you´re past Lorca and a steady pace with plenty of stops for coffee and a chillout made for a pleasant journey. We took the A-44 and then the A-395 and followed the signs straight to our hotel! There are a huuuuge variety of hotels/hostels etc in Granada and it´s really a case of take your pick. As ever, check the parking situation first. Our bike safely parked outside a 5* hotel, we were free to explore the city of Al-Andalus.
You MUST prebook entrance to the Alhambra. Entry numbers are limited for preservation reasons and tickets may not be available unless booked well ahead of time. Call 902 888 001 (English and Spanish) and have your credit/debit card ready and know what type of ticket and time you want. You can have "morning" "evening" and at some times of the year, "night" tickets. Once booked, all you have to do is turn up at the entrance, and use the machines there to collect them, simply follow the instructions on the machines themselves but remember YOU MUST HAVE THE CARD YOU USED TO PAY FOR THE TICKETS WITH YOU!! We chose a morning ticket with entry to the Nasrid Palace at 11am. You choose a time to enter this part and have a 15 minute "window" ie if you don´t get there within 15 minutes of your allotted time, NO ENTRY (and no refund either!). Note that the Nasrid Palace is a GOOD 15 minutes walk from the Alhambra entrance so make sure you give yourself enough time to get there. I´m not going to attempt to describe the place...there are hundreds of books on this place as well as the Web! All I will say is: we are both SO glad that we (finally! LOL!) got our act together and made the effort to see this place. If you like amazing architecture, fascinating history or beautifully landscaped gardens, you will not be disappointed. The food was good too, tapas the size of a starter every time you buy one. Great destination, friendly staff everywhere we went, helpful locals and lots of walking! LOL! Go see for yourselves, if you go on a motorbicycle you even get free parking!! Stay Safe, El Guiri

Photos by Richard O’Rourke Suzuki marked the 40th anniversary of Barry Sheene’s first world title by displaying a collection of incredible bikes and rare medals. The two gongs he received for winning his world titles made a rare public appearance, alongside seven sets of leathers and two helmets.

Suzuki Katana
Seven of Sheene’s race bikes were on display, including the two XR14s he rode during his championship winning years of 1976 and 1977. The Heron Suzuki XR27 that Sheene was racing in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone when he made the notorious 'gesture' to Kenny Roberts in 1979 also featured.
Suzuki GB built a Suzuki Katana from scratch during the show. The GSX1100SD Katana will be raced in the four hour Endurance Legends event at Donington Park in May 2017. The bike was built using parts from Suzuki's extensive Vintage Parts Programme.
