A crazy month on the Costa Blanca as we saw snowfall! The beach at la Zenia was covered in the stuff! Richard O’Rourke took his car out for a spin (not literally, luckily) and his photo has pride of place in this month’s Motors in the News. Richard has also been busy attending both the Ace Cafe and San Isidro Car Shows as well as giving us his usual Motorsport Month and his funny tales in the life of a motorsport photographer. Jill Carter talks to us about tyres, with great information and advice on tyre safety. VW I.D. Buzz Volkswagen has revealed a new all-electric concept car, which is described as a vehicle that “transfers a Microbus feeling into the future”, the I.D Buzz draws inspiration from the classic and iconic Type 2 Microbus, which was launched in 1950. Its 2017 interpretation includes retro design cues such as the two tone paintjob, blunt front end and large VW badge, but the space age interior, huge 22-inch wheels and wraparound LED lights modernise the design.

Tyres are not a glamorous subject but are most important to road safety. It is essential to remember that contact with the road surface is limited to four small areas of rubber and that these should be maintained in a good and legal condition for the sake of all road users. There are startling differences in braking distances between tyres just below the legal limit and those with full tread which can be as much as a full bus length. To be out of control and to have no effect on steering and braking leaves the driver feeling helpless and it is in the lap of the Gods as to whether he walks away from an impending impact. This is intensified in wet conditions where the stopping distances are so much longer. Figures published by the Department for Transport in the UK revealed that illegal, defective and under-inflated tyres were responsible for more than 1,210 road casualties in Great Britain during 2010. This was compounded by the Road Casualties report that shows eighteen motorists were killed during this period from defective tyres. For the previous five years one hundred and sixty four persons lost their lives in tyre related deaths. Do not skimp on tyre replacement and always replace the valve when buying a new tyre as well as balancing the wheel. Look after your tyres and they will look after you.
Tyres should be checked at least once a month but always before a long journey for:- Air pressure, correct pressures will be advised by the vehicle manufacturer to cover both carrying light and heavy loads, these can be found in the handbook or on the door slam panel. An under-inflated tyre will cause wear and tear on the outside edges whereas over-inflation accelerates central tyre wear. Unfortunately both conditions adversely affect the vehicles braking and cornering ability. - Condition, check for structural damage such as lumps and bumps in the wall of the tyre and objects, such as nails, embedded in the tread. These can lead to total failure of the tyre and cause loss of control. If found, have the tyre checked by a professional. - Tread depth, the minimum legal limit for the UK is 1.6 mm. Without a tyre gauge a rough guide is the use of a 20 pence piece inserted into several points of the grooves. If the rim of the coin is visible or almost visible the tyre will need changing as it it could endanger the lives of the vehicle occupants as well as other road users. A cautionary tale for all is that several years ago I bought a new car from a main dealership. Less than three weeks later I had a puncture at speed on the autovia and was lucky to avoid an accident. The tyre was inspected by Michelin and found to be over five years old, this on a brand new car. The main dealership and the manufacturer would not accept responsibility and I had to pay for all the tyres to be replaced. Now I check the date of manufacture when buying a new tyre or vehicle! There is no legal requirement to replace tyres as they age but they harden and become less effective with time.

Look No Hands. You may remember that we covered a story about a new BMW concept motorbike that stands up on its own. Well now Honda have revealed a motorcycle that can drive and balance on its own during the recent Consumer Electronics Show 2017 in Las Vegas. The Riding Assist feature harnesses Honda’s robotics expertise to create a bike that can balance on its own – stopping it from collapsing onto a rider. It could spell the end of accidents while driving at low speeds, something even the most experienced motorcycle rider struggles with. Motorbikes have a tendency to topple over due to their bulky nature, but Honda’s concept appears to stay perfectly upright without anything propping it up. Like BMW, Honda haven't said when the tech will become available. The Snow. It was a momentous occasion, snow in Torrevieja and surrounding villages for the first time since 1914, the Spanish residents were all out on the streets enjoying the falling snow. Richard O’Rourke summed it up when he sent us his photo “When it snows you just have to go for a drive. You just HAVE to!”
Future Technology. The automotive technology showcased at the CES last month was in part about self-driving vehicles, but also about personalizing the driving experience. Artificial intelligence and facial recognition will allow vehicles to let you in (if it's your car), and adjust the seating, lighting, music or other elements of the environment for you, automatically. Swiss-based group Rinspeed showed a prototype electric car called Oasis with a miniature garden inside. The vehicle with an "intelligent rolling chassis" can also operate in autonomous mode, converting its windshield into a screen for videoconferencing. 3-D screen technology was showcased by VW in their Digital Cockpit project. To create the 3-D effect, Volkswagen puts one screen behind another.

This beautiful 80 year old car is owned by Swedish couple Bosse and Britt-Marie. They bought the car in Sweden and had it shipped to their home in Murcia, where they spend the winter. The car arrived one Saturday last November on the back of a trailer and the next day they drove the Dodge to Phoenix Car Clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ace Cafe Meeting in Los Montesinos! The car is all original and has only 89,000kms on the clock. It was repsrayed in the 70s, luckily keeping the original dark grey colour. This car comes from Phoenix, Arizona and was initially bought for $760.
The electric system is 6 volt (not 12) and the engine a Straight Six, producing 87bhp with 3 gears. It has no heating system but does have hydralic brakes, a relatively new invention at the time. Dodge was a forward-thinking company and adopted new technologies in its cars. The Businessman Coupe doesn't use a key to start, instead there is a foot button under the dashboard above the accelerator. There's a crank to start the engine as a back up although Bosse has never had to use it, it has started first time each time. The spare wheel is on the outside of the car, in the four-door family version, the spare wheel can sit behind the front seat.
Someone bought the car 10 - 15 years ago and shipped it to Sweden, it was sold on to the owner Bosse and Britt-Marie bought it from. He had had many offers when he put it up for sale but everyone wanted to convert it to a hot-rod. The owner didn't want this and was happy to sell it to Bosse since he wasn't going to alter it. A few minor repairs to the brakes and seat is all it needed to get it to how it is today. It's for sale at the right price.
The Businessman Coupe was designed for the travelling salesman in America. With two doors, two seats and a large boot (trunk) to carry their wares (vacuums, encylopedias, etc). Having just bought the car, Bosse and Britt-Marie were looking for others on the internet and discovered that they only could find 2 original and a handful of hotrods confirming it to be very rare. A Funny Thing Happened.... by Richard O’Rourke In a new series of articles Richard O’Rourke recalls some amusing incidents which occurred during his time as roving photographer and reporter for Motoring News in the 1980s and ‘90s.
THE LADA AND THE ROLEX When I left you last month we had caught up with the runaway rally car and had returned to the beer. As we sat outside the taverna Jimmy McRae casually remarked that during their run over the stage they had come across a couple of tourists in a Lada who were hopelessly lost and, guess what?, they were from Cork (my home county). Of course I thought the lads were joking but they persuaded me that this was the truth and that any minute now the Lada would arrive in the village where we were resting. Sure enough, the Corkies rounded the corner to cries of “there they are” and so I stepped on to the road and flagged them down. I was dressed in t-shirt and shorts and was brown as a berry, a combination of sun tan and dust, and with my dark curly hair must have appeared like a local Cypriot. Imagine the tourist’s surprise when, in my best Cork accent, I said “alright lads, how is it going?”. They joined us for a beer and explained that they were on holiday in Cyprus where the girl’s father, an army officer, was stationed with the UN peacekeeping force and had indeed got lost on the unmarked mountain roads. They were completely unaware of the rally and were pouring over a useless map when this noisy, flame spitting, stone throwing projectile came towards them at lunatic speed. The projectile stopped and the occupants, who were wearing intercom headsets and must have looked like aliens, spoke to them in a combination of Scottish and Lancashire accents asking them if they were alright and gave them directions to the nearest village, tarred roads and civilisation. They joined us later back in our hotel in Nicosia and were still shaking their heads in disbelief at their strange encounter. Nothing to do with the rally but meeting a fellow Corkonian in such a remote place.
And so to the rally itself and another funny happening. Mohammed bin Sulayem, an Arab prince and a very wealthy driver from Dubai, had entered the rally in an Opel Manta run by the British based GM Rallysport team. Dusty Bin, as he was known, was a regular competitor in the Middle East Rally Championship with the odd foray to the UK and Ireland and had decided to try his luck on the unforgiving Cyprus stages. I was positioned near the end of one of the stages, snapping the cars and dodging the flying dust and rocks and when the first twenty, or so, cars had passed by I made my way back to the finish where my car was parked at a service area. After the flying finish the road went 90 left and downhill hairpin right and as I rounded the hairpin, there was Mohammed, sitting on a rock and looking a little forlorn. We exchanged pleasantries and I took it that he was having a rest and gathering his thoughts away from the hubbub of the service area but as I walked on I noticed the wheels and underbody of a rally car facing the sky in the undergrowth and suddenly realised that he had gone off on the 90 left and rolled the car. The service crew arrived and I snapped away as they began the recovery process and eventually put the car facing right way up. There was surprisingly little damage as the roll had happened at very low speed and very soon afterwards the car was started and driven to service where it was pronounced fit to continue. That evening, back in the press room, my photographs of the incident were in great demand and appeared on the front page of the local newspaper the following morning. Another day at the office, or so I thought, until news filtered through that Mohammed had lost his watch as he was scrambling out of the upturned car. No ordinary watch though, but a diamond encrusted
Rolex worth, I was told, around £20,000. As I was one of only a few people who knew exactly where the accident happened I was being encouraged by my fellow press buddies to go back there and search for the watch. I gave it some thought but resisted the temptation as my conscience wouldn’t allow me to sell it or keep it and if I gave it back to it’s rightful owner the most I could expect was his grateful thanks and maybe a small reward such as a Ferrari or a nice watch. Let one of his many hangers on go tramping around in the bushes and good luck to them if they found the watch. In any case I had more important things on my mind. Dinner, a few drinks with the lads, a good night’s sleep and the prospect of a hot sunny day ahead and maybe another upturned rally car or two. We heard no more about the watch so chances are it is being worn by a lizard but the good news is that Mohammed went on to finish the rally in a very creditable fifth place and with no more whoopsies along the way.
By way of a postscript, the same Mohammed bin Sulayem is now a high ranking member of the FIA, the world governing body of motorsport and a great ambassador for the promotion of rallying and racing in the Middle East.

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2016 WRC The Monte Carlo Rally heralded a new era in World rallying as we witnessed new cars with more powerful engines due to an increase in the size of the turbo restrictor, larger aerodynamic aids such as rear wings, front splitters and rear diffusers and less weight. All in all, faster, noisier and more aggressive looking machines. New too was the arrival of Toyota with their Yaris WRC, the Japanese giant making a welcome return to World Rallying after an 18 year absence with Jari Matti Latvala and Juho Hanninen doing the driving. Ford, under the banner of M-Sport, had captured World champion, Sebastien Ogier, after the VW team pulled out at the end of 2016 and he was joined by Ott Tanak and a returning Elfyn Evans in the D Mack run car. Citroen took a year off in 2016 to develop the new C3 WRC and the news cars were driven by Kris Meeke and Stephane Lefebvre with Craig Breen behind the wheel of last year’s DS3. Hyundai brought their very dramatic looking i20 Coupe and, like Citroen, they kept last years drivers, Thierry Neuville, Hayden Paddon and Dani Sordo. Andreas Mikkelsen, despite winning the final round of the 2016 championship for VW, found himself without a drive in the top category and had to settle for a seat in the WRC2 Skoda Fabia. The action began with two stages in darkness on Thursday night and the first driver to fall foul of the slippery conditions was Paddon who oversteered on fast left hander and rolled the car. Unfortunately a spectator was injured in this accident and later died in hospital. Paddon was withdrawn from the rally.
The pace was set by Neuville and he continued his relentless charge on Friday to take a 53 second lead into the Saturday stages. Tanak and Meeke were the initial chasers but Meeke struck a rock and wrecked his suspension while Tanak was overtaken by Ogier. The roads were largely dry but with snow and ice on higher ground (a bit like the Costa Blanca last month) and tyre choice was critical with most drivers opting for studded winter tyres on at least two wheels. Neuville looked comfortable in first place and was heading for his first WRC win with Ogier, Tanak and Latvala in the following places. The Toyota was performing well on it’s first outing and surprised everyone, including Latvala, with it’s pace and reliability. Disaster struck for Neuville on the final stage on Saturday when he clipped a rock and broke his rear suspension handing the lead to Ogier. No better man than the reigning champion to judge the pace and stroke it home and this he did much to the delight of Malcolm Wilson and the M-Sport team and for a while it looked like a Ford 1-2 until Tanak’s engine dropped onto two cylinders and he lost second place to Latvala. A heroic drive on the final stage meant that the Estonian held third place from a fast charging Sordo with Craig Breen coming home in fifth in the old car ahead of the new model driven by Lefebvre who finished ninth. Elfyn Evans had a great drive on his return in the D Mack shod car including two fastest stage times to come home sixth and Mikkelsen had a fantastic run in the Skoda to finish seventh.

Formula One Big news on the F1 front is the signing of Vallteri Bottas by Mercedes on a one year contract to partner Lewis Hamilton for 2017. The Finn was released by Williams and will be replaced by Felipe Massa who enjoyed the shortest ever retirement from Formula 1. The one year deal is significant as it keeps the door open for the likes of Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso should Bottas not live up to expectations. Both Vettel and Alonso are out of contract at the end of this season and should Ferrari and McLaren not provide them with winning cars they will be keen to make the jump to the all conquering Mercedes team. Hamilton, as I mentioned last month, may pack it in if he wins the championship this season and it is not beyond reason that the two former Ferrari men could become team mates at Merc. I may be wrong but Bottas has never impressed me as a driver of the very top calibre. He lacks the killer instinct and has in the past had opportunities to win but seemed to settle for a good points finish instead. I cannot recall a race where he pulled off a demon overtaking manoeuvre the like of which we have become accustomed to Max Verstappen making. He may be the perfect back-up driver to Hamilton and nett a load of points to help the team to another constructor’s title but a future team leader and World Champion? Don’t think so!

Just as we were going to press came the news that Bernie Ecclestone has been retired from his post as F1 Supremo. The Liberty Media Group who are now in charge of the business side of Formula 1 have announced that Chase Carey will henceforth take control of F1 and that Ecclestone will be given the title of Honorary Chairman, a post with no precedence and one with no effective say in what actually happens in the sport. Hot on the heels of this news comes the appointment of Ross Brawn to a yet unknown position in the Liberty Group, surely it is only a matter of time before he is announced as Bernie’s replacement.

WRC - MONTE CARLO RALLY The World Rally Championship 2017 got off to a sad start this year when a Spanish photographer died in an incident involving Hayden Paddon in his Hyundai i20. Out of respect for the man’s family, Hyundai decided not to run Haydens' car for the remainder of the Monte Carlo stages and amidst the rumours, Hayden issued a statement offering his condolences to the man’s family and asking the fans & public " not to speculate " whilst the FIA and authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Despite the sub-zero conditions thousands of enthusiasts turned out to watch the rally including the rich and famous who were flown in by helicopters to spectate from the best vantage points. The most popular stage was Sundays climb and descent of the famous Col de Turini. Ascending 1,607m, the conditions became more challenging as it began to snow heavily. At the end of day 3, Sebastian Ogier was overall winner as he debuted with the M-Sport World Rally Team in their all new 1.6 litre 380bhp, Ford Fiesta WRC Car. Team mate Ott Tänak wasn't so fortunate as he limped through the opening test from Luceram to St Roch with his Fiesta’s engine running on just two cylinders, with the engine problem finally leaving him in third place. Jari-Matti Latvala finished second in a Toyota Yaris on the Japanese manufacturer’s return to the WRC after a 17-year absence and fourth place went to Dani Sordo in the Hyundai i20. The Cathedral was built directly after the reconquest on the orders of Queen Isabella I, whose remains rest there along with King Ferdinand II of Aragon. Because it wasn´t opened until 1561 (having taken 181 years to complete!) rather than Gothic, it´s architecture is Spanish Renaissance in style, and sits on the site of the ancient Mosque. The awe inspiring facades are matched by the stunning, golden decorations of the interior. There are several Chapels within and the sacristy acts as a museum, holding paintings by Botticelli amongst others! The meager 4 Euros entry includes an excellent audio headset that guides you round whilst giving you more information than you can shake a zealot´s stick at!! Very good. Opening times are: Monday to Saturdays 045-1330 and again from 1600 to 1900. Closed Sundays and holidays, of which there are many in Spain..so check before you go! As we were in the area and suitably spiritually refreshed, we (as in ME! LOL!!) thought we might as well "take a looksee" at the Pico Veleta. Ride 35: Granada Cathedral Some of you may remember that Mrs Guiri and I finally managed to get down to Granada and at last see the famed Alhambra Palace in all it´s huge gardened, hours long, beauty?! Whilst truly impressive, it was also very tiring and afterwards we both felt the need for a change of pace. Divine Inspiration came via a throw away comment: "I wonder what time the Cathedral closes?" So that was it! We were on a mission! It was another 45 minutes walk from the Alhambra before we eventually reached the Cathedral, but at least it was all downhill!

Artwork kindly donated by Jennifer Janiak - Ross Noel, who was 15 years old on Christmas Day, is an absolute rock for all the other dogs, especially the nervous ones. He was recovering from ear surgery when he pulled out the medical drain and had to go back to the vets. It is only a 2 minute drive but seconds away from the surgery, he began whimpering, howling and crying. SOMETHING WAS WRONG! On opening the boot, we saw he had got his foot and leg wedged down a small gap between the boot floor and spare tyre. A vet came out to help as it was twisted and well and truly stuck. The fear of his leg breaking was indescribable but thankfully he was freed and unharmed. The Little Pod Association is a Registered Charity here in Spain. We are desperately needing a designated small van for transporting rescued animals to safety, vets visits, carrying food and supplies etc. The ancient private car that has been used has 243,000 kms on the clock and has helped more than 1500 animals. It is now on its last legs (or should we say WHEELS!). As the above recent incident proved, it is not entirely suitable for purpose. We are asking animal lovers to please help us raise funds to buy a reliable vehicle. The Little Pod Squad is happy to attend any local fundraising events.
