Our very own El Guiri takes us on a journey to a hidden delight away from the crowds, and now the motorsport season has finished, we once again showcase an F1 star from the past and see what’s in the F1 news. The Race of Champions, where racing drivers from all sports take on each other in the same vehicles, took place in Barbados a few weeks ago and a retired driver took the crown this year - who? You can find out on page 15. With a look at the cars up for the European Car of the Year award and our new Top Ten; this time Fiats, we have a lot packed in! The hallmark rear engine concept is now being offered for the first time in the four seater Forfour.
The revolution enters the next round of smart vehicles and now it has undergone major improvements in virtually all areas of safety and comfort. These include standard-fit Crosswind Assist, which is able to defuse dangerous cross wind gusts when overtaking lorries on bridges carrying out braking intervention. Forward Collision Warning (optional) helps when you edge too close to the vehicle ahead, the distance is monitored continuously by a midrange radar system.

The new generation will be priced the same as the current Smart series and the new Forfour will cost around 600â‚Ź more with the same engine.

Astonishing Barn Find. 60 rusting classic cars have been found in a barn in France, including a Ferrari Spider, a Maserati A6G, Hispano Suizas, Delahayes, Jaguars and Porsches. They were collected, mostly between 1955 and 1965, by a French transport tycoon, Roger Baillon, who set out to create his own automobile museum. When his business fell into trouble in 1977, Mr Baillon sold 50 of his cars. It was assumed at the time that the whole fleet had been disposed of. Earlier this year, the specialist auction busi-
ness Artcurial Motorcars, heard rumours that a handful of cars were left out of the sale. After much searching, they found and contacted Mr Baillon’s heirs and discovered the barn and cars. The most important find is the 1961 Ferrari 250 SWB California Spider (top left), only 37 were made and this particular one was used in the 1964 film 'Les Felins' with Shirley MacLaine and Jane Fonda. It is expected to go for around €12 million when it is auctioned next month in Paris. Expensive Plate. Classic car dealer John Collins paid a record-breaking £518,480 on registration plate ‘25 0’ at a DVLA auction last month. Mr Collins will be putting the plate on his 1961 Ferrari 250 SWB. The most expensive number plate ever sold previously by DVLA was 1D which sold for £352,411 in 2009.
The Name's Martin, Aston Martin. Behold the new James Bond car; the DB10. Unveiled at a live event at Pinewood Studios in December, director Sam Mendes introduced the new Aston DB10 as ‘the first cast member’ of the new Bond film SPECTRE. Aston Martin worked with the 007 production team to develop the new coupe, which has been made specifically for the film. Ten of the cars will be produced, all of which will be used on the film. Aston Martin are no fools though and the film is set to be released on Nov 6th 2015, around the same time Aston are due to unveil the DB9 replacement. It is expected that the replacement model to look similar to Mr Bond's car, except maybe the back wheel arches... News of 007's new DB10 comes in the 50th year of Aston Martin's association with James Bond, half a century after the DB5 first appeared in the film franchise. Daniel Craig will be back as Britain's top spy in SPECTRE, which stands for Special Executive for CounterIntelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion. All we know about the plot is 'A cryptic message from Bond's past sends him in a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.'

Season News F1 Driver Profile Alberto Ascari

Mercedes Lewis Hamilton says his relationship with Nico Rosberg is “back to normal" after a tense title fight throughout the season. The Mercedes drivers have been friends since they raced together in karts 14 years ago and met for the first time since the Abu Dhabi race at Mercedes' end-of-season Stars and Cars event in Stuttgart. Referencing the embrace the two shared in the pre-podium room in Abu Dhabi, Lewis said: "You saw Nico come over after the race and that underlined the respect we have for each other, and even though we had difficult times through the year we came out strong." Asked if they had any regrets, both drivers said they did not. Lewis Hamilton tweeted a split picture of his 1995 karting and 2014 F1 title wins. McLaren Jenson Button will continue to drive for McLaren after an uncertain few weeks waiting to hear whether McLaren would retain him or his team-mate Kevin Magnussen. It will be Jenson's 16th season in F1. Kevin becomes the test and reserve driver for the team. Moving to McLaren is Fernando Alonso, who says he has unfinished business with the team. The Spaniard drove for McLaren in 2007, after winning two consecutive titles with Renault. He came 3rd overall and returned to Renault the following year. Red Bull Red Bull gave Sebastian Vettel a pair of tight red Speedos, amongst other things, as a farewell gift. The German is known to have a British sense of humour and was photographed in front of the Trophy cabinet. Sadly, some days later, 60 trophies were stolen from the teams Milton Keynes factory when a 4x4 drove through the entrance. Team Principal Christian Horner said they were "devastated" by the break-in as the trophies "took years and hard work to accumulate".

Alberto Ascari is a two times F1 Champion born in Milan, Italy in 1918. His father, Antonio was an acclaimed racing driver but died while leading the French Grand Prix in 1925. Aged 7, Alberto decided that he too wanted to be a racing driver. Initially he competed on motorbikes, before entering the Mille Miglia in a Ferrari in 1940. After the war, he began racing again in a 4CLT Maserati, purchased with a friend. After a successful season in 1947 racing in Northern Italy, he gained the nickname 'Ciccio' meaning 'Tubby'. In 1949 Enzo Ferrari, who had been a great friend and team mate of Alberto’s father, signed Alberto to race for Ferrari. He achieved 5 wins in his first year and 9 the year after. In 1952 he won 12 of the races and achieved his first World Championship, his second following in 1953. Leaving Ferrari he raced a 250F Maserati to compete against the new Mercedes-Benz 'Silver Arrows'. The W196s were so dominant, causing many, including Alberto, to blow their engines chasing them. In 1955 he was at Monza watching testing and decided to try a few laps with the Sports Ferrari of his friend Castellotti. As he emerged from a fast curve on the third lap the car unaccountably skidded, turned on its nose and somersaulted twice. Thrown out on the track, Ascari suffered multiple injuries and died a few minutes later. Ascari’s death was regarded as a national loss. The corner where the accident happened, renamed in his honour, has been subsequently replaced with a chicane, now called Variante Ascari.
Formula E is the new FIA single-seater championship and the world's first fully-electric racing series. 13th December 2014: Punta del Este, Uruguay In his first Formula E race, Jean-Eric Vergne started from pole, but was jumped by Nelson Piquet Jr. who charged a little too fast and scraped the wall causing him to lose the handling. Vergne took the lead and instantly pulled clear, but a couple of safety car periods allowed Sebastien Buemi to take the lead with Verne chasing. A final lap shoot out was denied when Vergne suffered a broken suspension. Buemi went on to take his first win with Nelson Piquet Jr. in second and Lucas di Grassi in third. The next race is in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Jan 10th. Watch it live on ITV4.

mud/dirt across the surface as this is 'worked' land. Eventually a T-junction has us taking a left again (D14) on into Calabardina, a little gem of a destination in it's own right! A mere 2 clicks further and we reach Torre de Cabo Cope, but there's not even an eye-patch or parrot in sight!
Ride 19: Cabo Cope Cabo Cope sits about 9 kilometres from the relatively unspoilt fishing town of Aguilas. Which in turn is easy to get to via the Autovia network (Murcia, Lorca, Aguilas). Simple! But where's the fun in that? Lol! So, we made our way to Cartagena and headed for Mazarron on the N332. It's a lovely road this with great views and makes an excellent start to our 'adventure' as we try to 'swashle our buck'! Lol!! Skirting Mazarron we stay on the N332 and follow signs for 'Ermita del Ramonete'/ Ramonete. Shortly after this small pueblo (Ramonete), you come across a left hand junction signed 'Cabo Cope'. Initially, the road (D20) doesn't appear too promising. But it soon starts to twist and turn through a series of switchbacks as it climbs up into the Sierra del Cantal. The surface is good, but watch out for vehicles coming the other way as they tend to 'cut' the bends. At the summit is a radio/radar mast of some kind on your left, as the road bends sharply to the right. Approach it slowly, because the view that greets you as you breach the top is one you're going to want to savour. Stunning!!
Also called 'Santo Cristo', the tower was built in 1539 on the orders of King Carlos 1 but wasn't finished until 1574! No 'Spanish builders' jokes, please! The structure was a watchtower in response to continuous raids by pirates. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, it was finally restored in the late 20th Century (the biggest 'give away' being the stainless steel stairs!). The 'star' is not the tower itself however! This location really IS an unspoilt area of coastline (thank you Captain Cliche! Lol!), a marine reserve making it popular with divers. Go for a swim. Go for a walk. Go for the views or go for a picnic! One thing is sure, whatever your reason, you will NOT regret going! Stay safe, El Guiri.

World’s Fastest Street Legal Car

A couple of months ago we told you that Guy Martin claimed to have Britian's fastest street legal car.. well we were contacted by a reader, Tim Claxton who has put us right... Back in 2012, a Vauxhall Vectra, set the world record for the fastest street legal car at 250mph. The car belongs to Andy Frost who bought it in 1980 for £60. The car covered a quarter of a mile in just over six seconds, going 0-60 in under 1 second. As you may guess, Mr Frost has made some improvements from when the Vectra first left the Vauxhall factory. He has spent over 1,600 long hours modifying the car in his garage where he runs his business, Penn Autos in Wolverhampton. The car now weighs 1,200kg due to the adaptations and is estimated to have cost him over £100,000. The power comes from a V8 engine combined with two turbos from a large digger. The car has been built to race, but is still used as a run around every now and then. Check out the car in action on You Tube.

The UK's biggest bike show, Motorcycle Live 2014 took place last month with 39 manufacturers and over 150 other exhibitors showcasing the very best in motorcycling products and services, alongside 20 free live features, events and shows. The nine-day show was officially opened by eleven champions from the 2014 British Superbike Championship and its support classes, including British Supersport champion Billy McConnell and four-time BSB champion Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne. Other stars included over 20 racers from British and World Superbikes, the Isle of Man TT and Speedway. Brough Record A 1929 Brough Superior 986cc SS100 Alpine Grand Sports is the most expensive motorbike to sell at a public auction. It fetched a staggering £315,000 setting a new world record. Brough Superior motorcycles were built in Nottingham, at founder George Brough's factory in Haydn Road. Each bike was sold with a certificate guaranteeing it had been timed at over 100mph at the Brooklands racetrack, a remarkable claim for a road bike in the 20's. World War One British army officer TE Lawrence, also known as Lawrence of Arabia, owned eight Brough Superior bikes.
The European Car of the Year is the international award judged by a panel of senior motorists.
From a total of 31 candidates that were eligible for the prestige award, only seven have been shortlisted as the finalists. All of the vehicles are new and available now or before the end of the year in five or more European markets. Each must have the prospect of at least 5,000 yearly sales.
