A Happy New Year to you all! Another year and another calendar which features some of the cars we have seen at the Phoenix Ace Cafe held on the first Sunday of each month. Most of the photos were taken by Richard O’Rourke and I think you’ll agree he takes a great photo. A man of many talents, he has summed up the year’s motorsport on one page, despite really needing 3 or 4! Richard had a trip over the mountain into the campo to hunt out a lovely Alfa Romeo Spider with an interesting story behind it. El Guiri muses over the subject of technology this month, while Jill Carter has a good New Year’s resolution for all car owners. There were some wonderful sights at last month’s Ace Cafe; a Knight Rider KITT replica car, a Ferrari with a solution to a problem faced by some golfers and a selection of gleaming classic, American and super cars. We’ve a Top Ten for all you 80’s teenagers out there - what car did you have on your bedroom wall? A last look back at 2015 includes a glimpse at (what we think are) the best cars from some of the top films, of course we mean Spectre, but there are others... Happy motoring! Professor

The 675LT is the first McLaren in nearly two decades to wear the LT name, 'Longtail' It's a famous name in the history of McLaren, it was first used on the fastest version of the iconic McLaren F1 GTR 'Longtail'.

The main focus for the McLaren 675LT is clear; to deliver maximum performance, engagement and excitement. To achieve this, weight has been reduced by 100kg through the increased usage of carbon fibre. The power will come from a newly developed M838TL 3.8ltr twin turbocharged V8 engine with 666bhp. There will be 500 Spider models available worldwide.

Mad Max: Fury Road This film is rammed with strange and very unusual vehicles. Our favourite is the Peacemaker which features a Merlin V8 and tank treads. Fast & Furious 7 The $3.4 million Lykan HyperSport looked great in the film, despite that dodgy jump between two skyscrapers. Avengers: Age of Ultron The car of choice for Mr Tony Stark (Iron Man) is the Audi R8. We know this because he had one in all three Iron Man films. In the second Avengers movie he goes for a new R8 V10 version.

Jurassic World The Mercedes 6 wheeled monster is what’s needed when you are set to face dinosaurs in the flesh (well rubber).

Spectre I know we’ve covered it before but this beauty deserves another mention, the Jaguar C-X75.

MOTORS IN THE NEWS Bugatti Chiron. The Veyron’s successor will be named Chiron, Bugatti has confirmed and will debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March. The name comes from the legendary 1920s and 30s racing driver, Louis Chiron, who won several Grands Prix for Bugatti. The new car has a predicted top speed of 288 mph. Apparently, 100 orders for the car have already been placed despite the $2.5 million expected price tag. The company’s president Wolfgang Dürheimer has stated that “With the Chiron, [Bugatti] will make the best significantly better.”

SLC-Class. This is the Mercedes new SLC-Class, the replacement for the SLK-Class. From the 2017 model year, this model will become the SLC-Class with a view to tighten its ties to the C-Class. The styling changes are pretty noticeable moving from the SLK to the SLC, but they are not drastic. At the front end, there is a new steeply raked diamond grille, larger air intakes on the bumper, and updated headlights with C-Class-like graphics and integrated Toyota S-FR Concept d a y t i m e running lights

Honda S2000. Honda are revivving the S2000 name on a new roadster, which is currently being developed by the Japanese firm. The new S2000 will stay true to the original’s principles of a front-mounted engine, sited behind the axle line, and rear-wheel drive. It will be powered by turbocharged 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines, with a Type R version a possibility too. Introduced in 1999, the original version of Honda's two-seat roadster was renowned for its strong powertrain and lively handling, but the second edition of the car was axed in 2009. The new version will be taking aim at the Mazda MX-5 and Fiat’s forthcoming 124 Spider and is expected to be more expensive than the MX-5 at prices over 25,000€. Honda S2000

Toyota S-FR Racing Concept. Toyota have built this racing concept for the 2016 Tokyo Auto Salon taking place later this month. Although the company haven't committed to building the S-FR concept for real, it has handed the design over to its in-house racing team, Gazoo Racing, so maybe something will come out of it.

A New Year Resolution – I Will Clean My Car by Jill Carter

It is probably not top of your wish list but a spring clean of the car will pay dividends in feel-good factor.

Gleaming Paintwork

Use a lanolin based hair conditioner in the final rinse to really put a shine on the paintwork that also repels rain.

Sparkling Windscreens

Cola poured neat on the windscreens will remove traffic grime and dead insects. Protect the paintwork with an absorbent cloth. Once clean remove the cola with water ensuring no residue remains and pay particular interest to the paint. Dirty wiper-blades will streak the glass instead of keeping it clean and clear. Make a solution of 1/4 cup household ammonia to 4 cups cold water. Gently lift the blades, and wipe both sides with a soft cloth or paper towel soaked in the solution. Then wipe the blades with a dry cloth before lowering them into place. Fill the windscreen-washer reservoir with the following mixture. In a screw-top bottle mix 3 cups vodka (the cheapest you can find) with 4 cups water and 2 teaspoons washing up liquid, shake well, add to reservoir as required. Smaller amounts can be made for testing purposes.

Use window spray and burnish with an old pair of tights or stockings for a brighter outlook.

Interior

Nothing makes a car look unloved than a messy interior. Make the effort to clear the interior entirely and only replace items that are necessary such as a coin for the supermarket trolley, pencil/pen and paper, local map plus a disposable bag to put sweet wrappers and other rubbish accumulated during the next trips. Empty this at the end of each journey to retain the car´s loved condition. Next vacuum thoroughly using a paint brush to reach into the cracks and gulleys. Remove any floor mats and bang against a wall to remove grit and dirt replace and hoover. If drinks or food have been spilled it may be necessary to shampoo the carpets and upholstery with a household product. Leather interiors require a specialised leather cleaner that will remove dirt and stains widely available in car accessory shops. Krud builds up around door locks and other tight spaces. Wrap a cloth around a small bladed screwdriver and gently tease the dirt away from the cracks, the cloth may be dipped in a propriety product to aid removal. Air-vents fill up with dust which is easily removed by using a fine paintbrush sprayed with furniture polish. Rub this along and inside the vents, wiping off the grime before repeating. Remove old sticky decals from the windows using a plastic scraper and a solvent if a residue remains. All of the above will help your car look cared for and as well as improving the travelling experience will help in the second hand car market since a well looked after car is more likely to sell at a premium price.

The Race of Champions has been held since 1988 as a means of pitting drivers from all types of racing against each other in equally prepared cars. The 2015 Race of Champions was held at London's former Olympic tadium and featured 20 drivers.

Four-time Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel was crowned Champion of Champions. He defeated nine-time Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen in straight heats to take the title.

The racing followed a best-of-three format and Vettel won the opening leg by half a second before drama struck in the second when Kristensen's ROC buggy sprung an oil leak. A change of cars was required before the second leg was contested in KTM X-Bows.

2015 Formula 1 A well deserved third title for Lewis Hamilton and a steamroller victory for Mercedes in the constructors category sums up the 2015 season but there was more to it than that. Here we look at the year team by team and give the drivers points out of ten for their efforts.

2015 SEASON REVIEW Lotus. A tough year for Lotus despite having Mercedes power but a lack of funding held them back and the imminent Renault buy out was always on their minds. If the French can produce a decent engine this team could be worth watching even though their best asset is on the way to Haas next year. Grosjean had a frustrating year with too many DNFs but struggled on manfully to rate a 6. Maldonado is only there because he has a large bag of gold and scores 4.

MotoGP cont.. In Misano the Rossi pit crew got it all wrong in the rain and threw away what could have been a top three finish, if not a win and his petulance in Malaysia when he clashed with Marquez caused him to be penalised and start the final race from the back of the grid. A well deserved championship for Lorenzo though and despite the Honda being off song this year, a fine third place for Marquez. Ducati had a poor year with Dovizioso particularly slow and eclipsed by teammate Iannone. The Suzukis showed some pace early in the season and occasionally later on and could be a force next year but once again all eyes will be on Yamaha and Honda.

Mercedes. Once again the car to have and within the team Hamilton proved to be faster, more aggressive and more focused than Rosberg. Once upon a time in faraway Qatar the Royal Prince decided to reward a well respected Scottish oil engineer with the gift of a new car. The engineer was a long time employee of the Royal Family and it is not known whose choice the car was but in any case the chosen car was to be an Alfa Romeo 3.0 V6 Spider with a few tasty modifications such as Momo leather seats, Momo wheels and pearlescent white paintwork. The car was delivered from the local Ferrari/Alfa dealership in Doha and was enjoyed by the engineer until his untimely death in a shipping accident. He died intestate and it took a while for the authorities in Qatar to locate his next of kin but this was eventually achieved and when contact was made with his sister in Scotland, arrangements were made to ship the car to the UK. The car had been stored all the while in Qatar and was, of course bone dry and rust free so when it arrived in Scotland it was as good an example as could be found. Sister, by all accounts, did not like the car finding it too fast and in any case it was left hand drive and so the car was put into storage once more until it was sold to a member of the cast of the popular soap opera, Coronation Street. It’s new owner had a property in the Canary Islands and it was his intention to ship it there for use during holidays and his impending retirement but circumstances changed and this plan was scrapped. The car was once again put into storage and was occasionally taken out and treated to spins to local car shows and classic car rallies. Around this time the car gained somewhat of a reputation and was featured in Alfa owners club magazines and the Alfa Romeo Spider owners website. The tale of the car grew tails and some preposterous claims were made as to where it was built and by whom and to it’s mechanical specification. These I won’t go into here because it would only start the cycle of speculation all over again. Suffice to say that the present owner is satisfied as to the car’s provinence and has documented proof as to it’s entire history. Anyway, back to the story. Word went out that the car might be coming up for sale and the owner (Corrie Man) was inundated with enquiries and offers and questions about the aforementioned speculation to such an extent that he withdrew the car from sale and tucked it up in a garage once more. Enter Englishman, Maurice Mills, who was looking for a nice convertible car and got to hear of the Alfa and through a mutual friend and became aquainted with the car’s owner. It took a bit of persuasion but a deal was eventually done and the left hand drive car was shipped to Spain where it now resides. I recently paid a visit to Maurice in his home in the Spanish countryside and we spent a few pleasant hours chatting. The Spider is in immaculate condition, is now 18 years old and has covered just 12,000 km and is indeed a little bit special. It may not have the pedigree it was wrongly accredited with but is nevertheless a lovely car with a very special history.

Technology I was in a friend's car the other day. He'd not had it long and (as we boys do) he was full of praise for his new 'toy'. "Look at this" he said, pointing to what appeared to be a computer games consul protruding from the dashboard in what I thought was a rather clumsy and ugly manner. "You can play music on it" he said. "I've got a CD/radio player in mine" I answered. "Yeah, but this is better!" "Why?" "Cos I've got Bluetooth!" He beamed. "I know a good dentist" said I, glancing at his mouth."No no no! You don't understand" he laughed at my obvious 'Ludditeness'. "I can play music from my phone on it" "I don't have music on my phone. It's a phone!" says I. "Well, it means I don't have to

touch my phone when someone calls me" he continued "So it's safer!" He demonstrated this to me by leaning forward to touch the technical marvel with one hand whilst using the other to narrowly avoid the cyclist he'd not seen when looking at the screen! "If my phone rings when I'm driving, I don't answer it. So it's COMPLETELY safe!" I muttered through gritted teeth. "Yeah yeah but..." he enthused "this has GPS so you always know where you are". "I didn't know we were lost!" I said, starting to get a little worried! "No no" he stammered "we're not! But this has sensors and cameras and and..you can use the screen to reverse or park without hitting anything." At this point I looked sideways at my friend in amazement and incredulity. You see, the car we were in was...a SMART CAR!!! It only had 2 seats and if I lay down next to it I was longer than it was!!? "Couldn't you just look through the rear window (that was about 3 inches behind our heads!!) or in the mirror?" I asked. "I suppose so" He said "But this is better. It's TECHNOLOGY!" (On a HGV? definitely. A bus? certainly. A large MPV? possibly. But on a car shorter than my bike? I don't think so! TBC... Happy New Year. Stay safe, El Guiri
