Ferrari J50. Ferrari has unveiled an ultra-exclusive new model at a ceremony in Tokyo. The bespoke Ferrari J50 will have a limited production run of just 10 examples, each of which will be tailored to the requirements of the individual customer. The twoseater, mid-rear-engined, targa-bodied J50 has been created by Ferrari’s Special Projects department and designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre team in Maranello. The J50 is based on the Ferrari 488 Spider, but with all-new styling. Beneath that sculpted body, the J50 will be powered by Ferrari’s award-winning 3.9-litre V8 engine which produces 680bhp.

Stolen Chevrolet Corvette Returned. An eagle-eyed enthusiast with a keen attention to detail at a recent gathering in the northern California was checking out a 1964 Corvette when he noticed the vehicle identification number (VIN) was for a different model, evidence that the car was once stolen. The owner then brought it to the local California Highway Patrol to get it checked out. The VIN was from an Impala, while another number on the car matched that of a 1964 Corvette that was reported stolen down in Anaheim...in 1976. The owner had no idea, having bought the car from a dealer in 1987. The dealer is now out of business. The police contacted the original owner and she retrieved the car she lost 40 years ago. The Corvette is in great condition and is worth $50,000 or more today. The former owner is seaking compensation from his insurance company after giving the car back. Self-Driving Apple. Apple has acknowledged for the first time that it is investing in self-driving car tech. In a letter to US transport regulators, Apple said it was "excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation". It added that there were "significant societal benefits of automated vehicles" to be realised. There have long been rumours about the firm's plans but it had not publicly addressed them. End Of Batteries. British scientists unveiled a revolutionary new gadget which could make batteries redundant forever. The futuristic system will allow people to fully charge mobile phones and laptops in seconds. It could provide a huge breakthrough for electric cars, ending limited ranges and long recharging times of around eight hours.

Steve is a fully qualified Master Auto Technician with 27 years experience. Back in the UK, after leaving school, Steve worked at a Vauxhall main dealer and while there, he attended college and obtained a BTEC and City & Guilds National qualification. Moving onto be an MOT tester, clutch fitter and all round mechanic, he obtained a BTEC Higher National certificate. Steve then took a job at a busy Ford main delaer and was regularly sent on training courses, including advanced engine management, fault finding, engine & gearbox repairs. In all he attended over 50 courses in his 11 years at Ford and is qualified with an IMI (Institute of Motor Industry), AAE (Advanced Automtive Engineer) and CAE (Certificate Autmotive Engineer, Level 3). Moving to Spain 10 years ago, Steve has worked both mobile and for some of the more established garages in the area. Steve has a superb reputation in La Marina and has now established one in Torrevieja working from his own fully equipped garage. Diesel Cars: Why are they suddenly the bad guys? Jill Carter

Many people changed from petrol driven cars to diesel in a wish to help reduce greenhouse gases. Now we are being told that diesel exhaust gases are even worse for our health and around the globe governments and city councils are looking to ban the use of diesel vehicles in city centres. Some are proposing to go even further and ban all non-zero emission vehicles by a variable future date. Diesel fuel is a petroleum product that is used in diesel engines and is less expensive to produce than petrol though some Government taxes may not reflect this! The 'baddies' in diesel exhaust include the following; carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, aldehydes (formaldehyde, acrolein, acetaldehyde) benzene 1, 3-butadiene polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitro-PAHs plus toxic chemicals of sulphuric acid and trace metals (such as cadmium and arsenic). Not really designed for their health giving properties! The effect on the human body varies according to level of exposure and length. Poisoning with diesel has been well documented and an American Information Sheet states that long-term exposure to diesel exhaust can cause chronic respiratory symptoms such as persistent cough and mucous, bronchitis, and reduced lung capacity whereas long-term exposure to diesel fuel vapours can cause kidney damage and lower the bloodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to clot. In combination with other cancer-causing substances, such as cigarette smoke, asbestos, welding fumes and, long-tem exposure to diesel exhaust can increase your risk of developing lung cancer. If you have asthma, emphysema, heart disease, or allergies, exposure to diesel exhaust can worsen those symptoms.

Short-term exposure to diesel fuel vapours can cause difficulty breathing, nausea, eye irritation, increased blood pressure, headache, light-headedness, loss of appetite, poor coordination and difficulty concentrating. Swallowing diesel oil can cause severe abdominal pain, vomiting, vomiting blood, swollen throat, burning of the food pipe, irritated skin and severe pain or burning in the throat, nose, eyes, ears, lips, or tongue, collapse, rapid low blood pressure, and loss of vision. Siphoning of diesel fuel by mouth is not a good idea and cannot be recommended. Anyone who has ridden in a vehicle with a faulty exhaust or has been stuck in a traffic jam behind a lorry belching blue smoke will recognise some of these symptoms. Others who have unwittingly been in the vicinity of a diesel spillage may have suffered severe symptoms and required medical intervention.

Short-term exposure to diesel exhaust can irritate the eyes, throat, and lungs. It can cause light-headedness, feeling "high," headache, heartburn, weakness, numbness, tingling extremities, chest tightness, wheezing, coughing, nausea, and vomiting.

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2016 Formula One Not a wheel has turned in anger in the past month but rarely has there been such interest in the motorsport press, the specialist internet sites and social media as the musical chairs scenario is played out in front of a worldwide audience. Since Nico Rosberg’s shock decision to quit F1 the rumour mill has been in meltdown as name after name has been put forward as his replacement. The best seat in the sport is up for grabs and at the time of writing no driver has been chosen to occupy it. Approaches have been made to Williams to release Valtteri Bottas from his contract but the team say they would only do this if they had a suitable experienced replacement…. cue Felipe Massa to come out of the shortest ever F1 retirement. Merc money will talk and Bernie will make things happen. Another retiree, Jenson Button, has also been mentioned as Hamilton’s partner but this is even less likely. Alonso, Vettel, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg Sainz et al have also been mentioned but all are contracted for 2017 and negotiations would prove difficult to effect a release, especially at short notice. The most likely scenario is that Merc protégé Pascal Wehrlein will get the gig on a one year contract and that Alonso will use his ‘get out’ clause at McLaren at year’s end and move to the Silver Arrows by which time (if he wins the 2017 championship) Lewis Hamilton will retire and become a pop star. Wehrlein will then continue as Alonso’s number two if his performance this year warrants it. We will wait and see.

Rosberg announced his retirement two days after winning the championship leaving Mercedes in a very awkward position and while Toto Wolff was his usual diplomatic self regarding the dilemma, Niki Lauda was more forthcoming in his criticism saying that Rosberg was unfair in not giving the team a bit more notice. This, however, was a non starter because Rosberg’s decision was dependant on him winning the championship which only materialised on the final lap of the Abu Dhabi GP. His mind was made up that one was enough and that his life’s ambition was now fulfilled. Nico put everything into 2016 and indicated that he wasn’t prepared to put himself through it again in ’17. If Lewis had retired (as he threatened after Spain) that might have been another matter and Nico may have carried on. He will be remembered as a good, if not a great driver, and will join a long list of World Champions who will never make the shortlist of the truly greats. Fangio, Brabham, Clark, Stewart, Lauda, Prost, Senna and Schumacher are generally regarded as being the cream of the crop with current multiple champions Alonso, Vettel and Hamilton still awaiting the decision of the jury. The likes of Ascari, Graham Hill, Fittipaldi, Piquet and Hakkinen (all multiple champions) are not regularly mentioned in the first division and so Nico will join division three with the likes of Farina, Surtees, Hunt, Andretti, Scheckter, Jones, Mansell, Damon Hill, Villeneuve, Raikkonen and Button as once only champions and mostly in easily the best car. A very subjective list I know and argue if you like by putting pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) and send your opinion to CCT.

WRC In the world of rallying confusion also reigned in the wake of the shock decision by Volkswagen to withdraw from the WRC. This left Messrs Ogier, Latvala and Mikkelsen without gainful employment in 2017 but quick decisions were necessary with Monte Carlo only a few weeks away. Sebastien Ogier was first to blink and having tried the new Toyota Yaris and the Ford Fiesta he plumped for Malcolm Wilson’s M Sport Ford team alongside Ott Tanak. Shortly afterwards Jari Matti Latvala was announced as Toyota’s choice to partner Juho Hanninen in the Yaris leaving the very talented Mikkelson with nowhere to go. Then came the announcement from VW that they were going to homologate the 2017 Polo R and rent the already built and tested cars to any private team prepared to run them with full factory backing including mechanics and spares. The door is now open for Mikkelsen should some independent team take up the offer. No word as yet as sponsorship, logistics, a second driver (maybe) and a season long schedule would have to be put together but should all this come about Andreas could be sitting pretty with what would undoubtedly be a competitive car. Word has it that VW are prepared to pay the drivers (and co-drivers) saleries as they had already been contracted to the factory team for 2017 so that, at least, would ease the burden on any prospective privateer. Independent teams are no strangers to the world of rallying as outfits such as Tre Gazelle, Rothmans Rally Team, Chequered Flag, etc have all run factory spec cars in the past and while it is less common in the modern age there is no reason to suspect that a well organised team could not be successful with the Polo R in the future.

Club Torrevieja Christmas Dinner The club had its Christmas Dinner on Sunday the 11th December at 'Cala Capitan' in Cabo Roig. Fortunately the weather was kind to us and it was a perfect afternoon. Thirty six members and friends met at the restaurant for a welcome Cava and some canapés. The reception was followed by a very Spanish 3 course meal (no turkey) with excellent fish and superb steak from the BBQ. After desert and coffee, the entertainment was provided by Yvonne, the bar's resident singer. All in all a very enjoyable afternoon, which everyone seemed to appreciate, and a good way to start Christmas celebrations. Travels in a 600 written by David Hudson

The book tells of the experience from the 90s in owning and driving a SEAT 600 in Spain and the early days of the Classic Clubs of popular cars being formed. The author tells it as it happens warts and all. He was the only foreign founder member of the first Spanish Classic Club in the Vega Baja area of the Costa Blanca and Murcia Regions and their Second Vice President in 2004. He was the author and produced both a regular news letter and the club's history book of the first two years of the club, both were in Spanish and English. He organised the 12 classic meetings in Torrevieja and founded the first English speaking Classic Club in the Vega Baja area. With Angie he travelled over 90,000 kms. in a Seat 600 in Spain and Portugal. The longest trip was 2,500 kms. to Portugal in 5 days. They presented a letter and gift from the Mayor of Torrevieja to the Mayor of Madrid in recognition of the role of the 600 to the Spanish people with exploring their country on the 25th Anniversary of the 600. David was born in

David & Angie's experiences with driving a SEAT 600 in Spain 1940 in Abingdon, the home of the M.G. and Riley makes and after serving his apprenticeship in Leach's of Abingdon he worked in the early 60s at Nuffield Press where Lord Nuffield had his office which was still there as Bill Morris left it. Ride 34: Biar Castle Biar castle was built in the 12th Century and is Arabic in origin, having been constructed by the Almohads. It was later reinforced during the mid 13th Century due to it´s strategic importance, being a border town between the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon. Biar is on the "Route of The Castles of Vinalopo´" and was declared a national monument in 1931! The architecture is probably what a small child would draw if you told them to "draw a castle". It has two enclosures, an outer with four semi-cylindrical towers arrow slits and crenelated battlements, and an inner one in which sits the castle "Keep". Entry to the 17 meter high, three storey tower is an absolutely outrageous 1 Euro!! LOL! On the first floor

is a remarkably well preserved example of an Almohad vaulted ceiling (the only one of it´s kind found in any Spanish military building). The views from the open topped turret are simply stunning, giving a 360 degree panorama of the surrounding countryside and the town nestling below the protective walls. The town´s 3,723 inhabitants make their home at the foothills of the beautiful Sierra de Mariola, approximately 40 kilometers from Alicante. Access to the castle can be gained by following the signs through the narrow (VERY!!) winding streets to the small car park at the base of the monument. From there it´s a steep but not too long, walk up to the fortress´ impressive gates. The town´s traditional produce have been Honey, Dolls and Pottery (that´s Honey AND Dolls, not HONEYDOLLS!! LOL!). Some say the name Biar comes from the Latin"apiarium" meaning "place of the bees". Others claim it derives from the Arabic word "bi´ar" meaning "well"?! All we know is..it´s well worth beeing there...eh? eh? see what I did there? eh?! Oh, I don´t know why I bother!! LOL!! Easily reached by either Autovia or national roads, Biar makes a good "Day Out", just make sure you take some sturdy footwear! El Guiri

A Funny Thing Happened.... by Richard O’Rourke In a new series of articles Richard O’Rourke recalls some amusing incidents which occurred during his time as roving photographer and reporter for Motoring News in the 1980s and ‘90s.

THE RUNAWAY RALLY CAR The Rothmans Cyprus Rally in 1984 had attracted a very healthy entry being a coefficient 4 round of the European Championship. The European Championship was a big deal at the time as all the major rally teams were based in Europe and many independent teams ran factory spec cars for top drivers from all over the continent. From Scotland came British Champion Jimmy McRae driving a Nissan 240RS co-driven by Ian Grindrod from Blackburn. Jimmy and Ian had always been associated with Vauxhall and had driven the Magnum and Chevette HS and HSR to many successes in the UK and Ireland and had more recently driven the Opel Ascona and Manta. The Manta was a particularly successful tarmac rally car and the battles between McRae, Billy Coleman, Bertie Fisher and Austin McHale were legendary. The Nissan was chosen though because of it’s toughness having proved itself on rallies such as the East African Safari and Acropolis Rally in Greece. Cyprus is well known for its loose surface, rock strewn roads, high temperatures and very low average speeds. At that time the average over a fast Irish stage such as Knockalla in Donegal or Molls Gap in Kerry was well over 60 mph while averages in the UK forests could be as high as 40-50 mph. Here, due to a combination of twisty roads with ne’er a straight and many hairpin bends, suspension breaking rocks and loose, sandy surface the average stage speed over the entire rally was less than 30 mph. That is not to say that the cars were travelling slowly, oh no, they were flat out at times but nearly stopped at others and the slow bits outnumbered the quick bits. You Tube the Cyprus Rally sometime and you will see what I mean. Anyway. On the day before the rally started myself and fellow scribe, Brian Patterson, decided to take our Dealer Team Avis Mazda out for a look

and see what all the fuss was about. I navigated and Brian drove and using our UN issue map (not all roads are shown on the Michelin variety) we found our way to the start of Stage 1 and the track was all we expected and more. We crawled our way through and emerged at the other end, at last regaining a tarmac road over an hour later and having covered just 14 miles and not having met another car or any form of human or animal life along the way. Mind you we did stop along the way to feed ourselves on grapes and apples which were growing at the sides of the road and these we picked without having to get out of the car. Not far from the end of the stage we rounded a hairpin bend and found ourselves in a small village which boasted a tavern which sold cold beer. Covered in dust and sweat, we sat on the veranda and sipped pint bottles of Keo and soon became aware of a deep, rumbling sound in the distance. Around the corner came the McRae Nissan which we waved to a halt. The lads were giving the car a final shakedown run to make sure that everything was bolted together properly and they joined us for a beer. Shortly afterwards we were joined by the chase car crewed by John and Yvonne Armstrong and we chatted about the rally, the stages and the coalminers strike in the UK. Brian, who was facing the road, suddenly jumped up and shouted, “Jimmy, the car is rolling down the hill”. We all turned around and sure enough the 240RS had decided to go for a spin, all on it’s own, and was

All six of us ran after the car and just managed to capture it before it came to grief against a stout stone wall. The car was started and once more parked in front of the tavern but this time with a few large rocks chocked under the wheels. The reason for the cars wayward behaviour was that the fluid in the hydraulic handbrake system had boiled in the 40 degree heat and become ineffective and so gravity took over and off she went.
