Summer’s here and all the local car clubs have been making the most of the sunshine and heading out to various places around the area, El Guiri too has taken his band of bikers deep into the mountains for an overnight jaunt to sample the sights a bit further afield. We’ve a couple of old cars that have been restored to look like the day they rolled off the production line - a Reader’s Ride Mk1 Ford Fiesta has had a make over by Doug at Rapid Repairs, San Fulgencio. Representing the Spanish cars, Jill and Martin Carter’s Seat 600 they won in a raffle a few years ago has been fully restored by Auto Sol in San Miguel. They both look fantastic and we hope you enjoy them too. Richard O’Rourke finishes his car story this month and we were surprised (and delighted) with his choice of his favourite car he has owned of all time.. David Hudson gives us some advice on driving in difficult weather conditions, the hot sun as well as heavy rain. Much loved brand TVR is to return in 2017 with 'at least' four models using V8 Cosworth engines. New owner Les Edgar is working with F1 and McLaren designer, Gordon Murray to design the vehicles "in the tradition of classic British two-seat sports cars with a composite ground-effect aero chassis." That suggests roadsters and coupes in the spirit of the Sagaris and Tuscan, but updated with more modern engineering. Rear-wheel drive, a simple manual transmission and non-turbo, dry-sumped V8s made by Cosworth are already confirmed.

Jack Orwin, owner of Club Cars, La Marina owns this beautiful shocking pink 5 litre V8 Chimaera 500HC. It's capable of 185mph and he admits getting it up to 175mph before the wheel shake made him slow down! He used to race the car back in the UK and takes the car to local shows here on the Costa Blanca.

I bought this car locally and decided to restore it to a usable classic. The car was very solid and just needed minor repairs before getting into primer then a wet ﬂat. I choose the champagne gold paint since it is the original colour of the car, not the blue it was when I got it! A clear coat was then applied for a nice shiny ﬁnish. After the rebuild it had a machine polish and the outside was ready and looking fantastic.

MOTORS IN THE NEWS Lamborghini Urus. Lamborghini will add the Urus to their portfolio from 2018. We first saw the concept back in 2012 at the Beijing Motor Show and now the company have confirmed that the SUV will be their third model line, alongside the Aventador V12 and Huracan V10 supercars. The high performance crossover is expected to cost around €170,000 and double the production at the Sant’Agata Bolognese factory. The company expects to make an extra 3000 sales a year as the market for SUVs continues to grow.

Return of the London Motor Show. London is on course for a true all-encompassing central London Motor Show on May 5-8 2016 to be held in Battersea Park. Global brands will be on show displaying their latest innovations, from hypercars, hybrid executive machines and MPV and SUV, through to the smallest and most economic city cars and runabouts. Not simply a static display, The London Motor Show will allow all manner of dynamic driving experiences, both in Battersea Park, and also on a race track via an exciting helicopter ride. We guess the choice of location must be related to the Formula E final which was held in the park last month. The UK used to host a Motor Show; the British International Motor Show was held regularly between 1903 and 2008, initially in London at Crystal Palace, Olympia and then Earl's Court before moving to the NEC in Birmingham in 1976 where it stayed until 2004. It then returned to London for 2006 and 2008 at the new location of ExCeL. The 2010 and 2012 shows were cancelled (much to our disappointment since this magazine started in 2009). Goodwood stepped in and launched the Moving Motor Show day in 2010. Let’s hope the British motor industry get behind the new event.

Nautilus. We've found another 6-wheeled car! We love them here at the CCT. This time it's Captain Nemo's Nautilus car, which was driven by Sean Connery in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and it's to be sold at auction. One of just two models made for the movie, the machine is fully functional (although not street legal) and features heavily throughout the film and its promotional material.It is expected to raise between £18,000 and £25,000 when it goes under the hammer at Coys' Blenheim Palace auction on July 11.

I am pleased to present the restoration that has been made to the SEAT 600 of my friend Martin and Jill Carter, who brought it to my workshop wanting a bit of painting. Martin thought that the vehicle was perfect, but I sadly showed him that this was not the case... Many parts and items needed replacing and repairing before painting. We told them that we will only do the work properly or not at all, since we are a reputable company and have standards we adhere to. The first step was to remove all its accessories, assess its state, then start to restore the bodywork, doing it correctly as it would have been 46 years ago. Some of these years I have been working in this world of the automobile, always with the quality that I had been taught by my teacher. When the bodywork was complete, we primed and then painted the car, which turned out perfectly, thanks to my colleagues. I do not want to be tedious, so have only told you a brief overview on the repair of the SEAT 600, which in reality is not complex because of the simplicity of this car. You can see the result of the work in the photos (right). I urge you if you need to restore a vehicle, do it well or do nothing, just don't scrap them! The cost is not the issue and you will not remember this as you have many more years of enjoyment of the car. If you do, then the restoration has not been done properly. Tano, Talleres Auto Sol S.L. A lighthearted romp through the ups and downs of 40 years of car ownership. Part 3. The Alfa was indeed a lovely car to own and to drive but with virtues come vices and trade in value definitely came under the latter. I could have gone back to Signore Alfa where a deal could have been struck but I was never much inclined to replace cars like with like so I shopped around and set my eye on a Mazda 6. Metallic red, all the bells and whistles and a good price to boot. I drove away with a smile on my face but very soon after I realised that I had done it again. Nice car but wrong car. The Mazda was wonderful if you wanted a good looking, reliable family car with decent go, stop and handling but it was all a bit bland for me. Less than a year later I was back at the Mazda/VW dealers where they had a Mk Vl Golf GTi. One lively drive was all it took to convince me and before the silly grin disappeared from my face I had signed the order form and a few weeks later my 2 door, silver, 6 speed, 200bhp 2 litre turbo, GTi was delivered. Not since the 205GTi (20 years hence) did I enjoy driving so much but the Golf was a bit more grown up and mature, just like myself! Not a bit of it! I turned into a hooligan again and every trip was a treat. I even looked forward to the 40 mile round trip to work and every chance I got I headed for the quiet country roads of West Cork and Kerry where the GTi was in it’s element. Best car I ever had? Probably!

The MX-5 Club

Around this time retirement from my job as an Air Traffic Controller loomed and I was looking for a project to fill my time. I toyed with the possibility of a yacht or a speedboat but sanity prevailed and I set about finding a classic car. I had had enough of oily hands during my rallying days so I looked for something reliable, fun and topless. I know what you are thinking but I already had one of those so instead I went in search of a Mazda MX-5! After many months of searching I found what I was looking for, a 1991 British Racing Green Mk1 VSpecial with reasonable mileage, a good history and a clean, rust free body. The VSpecial came with tan leather upholstery and an LSD as standard and all in all it was a little beauty. Off it went to Dick O’Brien where all the fluids were replaced and a full service was done and very soon it was the recipient of many gifts from MX-5 Parts in the UK, too numerous to mention in the space available here. Soon afterwards three of my workmates also bought MX-5s and so began the ritual of the annual trip. We toured the Scottish Highlands, Brittany, the Lake District, the West Country ( a visit to the the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu), and numerous shorter jaunts in Ireland. When the time came to leave the cold, damp climate of Ireland and head for the sun there was little debate as to which car would accompany me and so the little Mazda was loaded with golf clubs, guitar, cameras, computer and a few clothes and off we went.

People laughed at me and said I was crazy to rely on such an old car on such a long trip but I had every confidence in the car and I was proved right. To date it has completed four such trips and has yet to miss a beat or ask for as much as a drink of water. A quick, lightweight, rear wheel drive car is hard to better and the little Mixer ticked all the boxes and more. I tried to have it changed to Spanish plates but this proved difficult and so it was sent back home where it now resides in the loving care of my good friend John, the only proviso being that I have the use of it whenever I go back on holiday. I look forward to my next visit. Before I left Ireland I had changed the Golf GTi. Three years of very happy motoring had come to an end, largely because I now had the MX-5 and two fun cars was one too many. I decided that a complete change was needed and so I went back to the aforementioned John Dennis and his Opel Dealership and asked to take a test drive in the new Insignia. He thought I was joking at first but soon realised I was serious and not long afterwards I became the owner of a 2 litre turbo diesel SRi with a few Irmsher Tuning bits, leather seats with heating and cooling and optional 18” wheels. This was my first ever diesel car and also my last. It may have had oodles of torque and fantastic economy but for me nothing can replace the instant throttle response of a good petrol motor and my only regret is that I didn’t specify the 240 bhp gas burner. Other than that it was a lovely car with superb comfort and handing and very smart looks as well. Having settled in Spain I sold the Opel and with the MX-5 back in Ireland I found myself carless for the first time in forty two years. Gulp! What to do? I pondered, cogitated, did a lot of head scratching and still couldn’t decide what to buy. All sorts of cars entered the equation but my mind was made up when I got an email from a friend back home which said “for Gods sake don’t buy anything sensible”. Off I went in search of another MX-5 and soon after I found my present car in the Mazda dealers in Elche. The Mk3 is a smashing car and a lot more civilised than the Mk1 if not quite as much fun to drive. Still, with the DSC switched off it’s not half bad! What next? Not a clue. A Ferrari 355 (if the lotto numbers come up), a Porsche 911 SC, a Merc SLK or maybe the new Mk4 MX-5. Who knows! Jaguar Enthusiasts Club Rebate Outing by Eric Arnold

On Sunday 21st June, the JEC went to Restaurant Rebate. Turn out for the day was good, 60 people and 20 beautiful Jaguars gleaming in the sunshine. We made our way in convoy to Rebate, through the orange and lemon groves and round the stunning Pedrera lake with its turquoise water. If you have never visited the lake, it is something you should make an effort to do, it is spectacular. Restaurant Rebate is a little tropical oasis with fabulous food, great service and flamenco dancers in the court yard, a recipe for a perfect day out. After a Cava reception we enjoyed a feast fit for royalty for just 25€, the food here is very different to the usual Spanish restaurants we visit. After announcements and awards we all left with full stomachs and big smiles.

WEATHER HAZARDS by David Hudson This June Spain has had flash floods that have taken lives and so it is a good time to explain to visitors (and residents) about the dangers that heavy rain can bring. Flooding and hail storms can change roads to rivers and underground areas to deep lakes. The following has been taken from the useful information sheet for the visitor: RAIN It can be dangerous in the rain since the tarmac is designed to cope with the extreme heat and not melt. Unlike the tarmac of the UK, it is not it is not good in the wet. So take care when driving immediately after a rain fall especially following a dry spell, although some places have special tarmac on the corners, you should drive with extreme caution. Latest figures released by Trafico said that in dry weather there were 347 accidents while in heavy rain it was 1487. But in light rain after a dry spell it increased to over 3400 accidents. Continuous heavy rain is very dangerous because of bad flooding, within 30 minutes you can have over 100 litres of rain fall and the danger is the speed that the water raises.

Club Torrevieja Clásicos Red If you are in an underground car park and water starts coming in, get out quickly and leave your car for the insurance. If you get caught out in flood areas get to high ground and in the night be wary of the road because the reflection will mean you may not be aware of the edge of the road you are driving on. SUN In the summer sun the exhausts can set fire to the grass on roadside so take care when parking or driving onto dry grassy areas. Throwing a cigarette out of the car window in the Elche area will mean a fine. Don’t forget American brand cigarettes are designed not to go out so be careful of your cigarette ends and never throw them out of the window. Be careful when driving in the hot sun because dehydration can occur very quickly, so always carry a bottle of water in the car. Also be careful of road rage in the summer, where patience is short and tempers flare easily. If in doubt of someone approaching your car lock the doors. MotoGP Things are hotting up in the land of MotoGP with just one single point separating Rossi and Lorenzo following the latest round in Barcelona. Once again reigning champion Marquez fell off while chasing Lorenzo and he seems to be struggling on a difficult Honda. The Yamahas appear to be much more compliant and it is hard to see anything but a Lorenzo/Rossi battle for the title. (I’m with Jorge for no other reason than that my great grandfathers name was George Lawrence!). Dovizioso also crashed out on the Ducati but the surprise of Barcelona was the performance of Suzuki who had Espargaro and Villegas on the front row. Race pace wasn’t as quick but the signs bode well for future success. We now have four competitive makes fighting it out for success. Oh for a similar scenario in F1!

Sebastien Ogier WRC Hyundai were on the pace in Sardinia and led for most of the way with Haydon Padden looking like taking his maiden win only for the relentless Ogier to overhaul him and increase his championship lead. Neuville, in the other Hyundai, finished third ahead of Elfyn Evans and Ostberg. Early casualties were Meeke and Latvala who had big accidents. Following Latvala’s win in Portugal Ogier said in an unfortunate interview that the fastest driver (himself) didn’t win and he came in for some criticism for this from the other drivers but once again he proved that he is the best when the chips are down and it is now up to the others to prove him wrong. 345 Degree Rally - June 2015

Twenty six members in 13 classic cars turned out, not knowing what to expect from the title of the rally. We went along the N332 passing through San Pedro, Los Urrutias, Cabo de Palos and on to the La Manga Strip. For those not familiar with this road, it is 22 km long and at the end you have to turn around

and come back. To the left of the road is the Mar Menor and to the right is the Mediterranean proper. At the end of the strip is a very steep hump back bridge, which we avoided going over, as we did not think it would look good seeing a Ferrari see sawing on the bridge, let along the look on Ferrari Joe's face. It was only now made clear to everyone that the end of La Manga strip where we had travelled was only a short distance away over the sea wall - hence 345 degrees around the Mar Menor, give or take. After a lovely lunch in El Hombre Del Velero we headed home.

The world famous TT (Tourist Trophy) takes place on closed public roads, with the races taking place in a time trial format. The narrow course is fraught with dangers, including stone walls, trees and telegraph poles. The riders reach speeds of over 130mph on the 37 and 3/4 mile course which contains 264 corners. O t h e r winners included B r u c e Anstey (left) in t h e Superbike and John McGuinness in the Senior, breaking the outright lap record speed of 132.701mph.

John McGuinness won the SES TT Zero race for the second year running on the Mugen, with his teammate Bruce Anstey again following him home, as he did last year. McGuiness set another new lap record speed of 119.279mph beating his record 117.366mph from 2014. Ben and Tom Birchall won both Sidecar Races, setting a new race record time in the process.

Ian Hutchinson won the Joey Dunlop Trophy for the best accumulative results throughout the week, having won both Supersport races as well as the Superstock race. A tremendous result after he suffered a serious leg injury at Silverstone in 2010, just months after becoming the first rider to win five races in a week at the TT.

Ride 22: High Sierras We headed down to Arboleas on the A4 and MU31 enjoying the scenery. Although basically 'motorways', the vast majority of Spain's Autovias bear little resemblance to those in the UK (M6 anyone? No? I thought not! Lol!!). Exiting at Salida 151 the group followed signs for MU-30 Alcantarilla/E15 A7 Almeria, exiting at 547. No 'Navigational Errors' were made until we arrived in Arboleas itself. A new bridge, two new roundabouts and not a single sign to be had amongst the lot!! I adore Spain, but why oh why spend 2 million on a bridge and 2 roundabouts then NOT spend 500â&#x201A;Ź on a couple of signs? Rob kept everyone away from the bar until rooms were allocated and all the bikes were safely parked in the courtyard; where the local children played happily on them until late into the night! Lol!!!!

The next morning we set off in the direction of Albox, taking the AL8100 to Cullar Baza. This road was fantastic with bends abound, and with a generally good road surface there was plenty of opportunity to enjoy the the amazing views as we crossed the Sierra de las Estancias and Sierra de Lucar. When the group pulled into a roadside cafe for a well earned rest, we had been travelling for over an hour without having to stop for traffic, junctions etc. Not ONE!! That's an extraordinary experience and one that very few UK bikers experience nowadays. The scenery continued to impress on the A330 through Galera and into the Sierra de Orce, Sierra de Jurena and another stop at Puebla de Don Fabrique. This town is a worthy destination in it's own right, but that's for another day! The A330 becomes the RM730 seamlessly amidst wide open spaces reminiscent of the American Prairies. Hanging a left at Baranda onto the RM702, things just got better and better! Sierra de Mojantes and Sierra de Villafuente took us to El Sabinar. The run from there to our lunch stop in Nerpio was the 'Jewel' in what had been a 'Crown of a Day'!! The colour of the Embalse de Taibilla was indescribable! Lunch was had in Nerpio, situated on the edge of Cazorla nature park, Spain's largest and second largest in the whole of Europe! Following lunch we retraced our steps as far as Baranda, again open-mouthed at the spectacular vistas. From Baranda to Lorca is the RM711 and a wonderful final leg to the day's route. Fast flowing, sweeping bends the perfect thing to wake us up again before saying our farewells and heading home via the Autovias. Stay safe, El Guiri
