It’s wall-to-wall sunshine in Spain and nothing has changed with the CCT despite the UK voting to leave the EU. Only time will tell how this affects us Brits making a life in Spain. With a nod to the UK, Jill Carter has a look at some of the Queen’s cars as she continues her 90th birthday celebrations. The second half of Jill’s biofuels article will follow next month. The guys and girls at Car Broker Spain spent a weekend at the Subaru event in Zaragoza and have written a report and taken some photos for us - thank you, have a look on page 14. Big events last month including the Le Mans 24 Hours, where only one Japanese manufacturer has won in its 84 year history. Toyota were about to become the second when it all went wrong on the final lap. You can read all about it on page 13. Bikers had their annual adrenaline fix at the Isle of Man TT, which had great coverage on ITV4. Richard O’Rourke rounds up a busy month of motorsport on page 16 and we look closely at an F1 steering wheel on page 17. Clone Wars. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is suing a Chinese automaker for copying one of its designs.First unveiled in 2014, the Jiangling Motor Landwind X7 SUV’s looks almost identical to JLR’s Range Rover Evoque, which is also built and sold in China. But while the Evoque costs $60,000 the X7 sells for a third of the price. We have featured some of the Chinese automakers before in this magazine showing a selection of their copycat cars. In the past, Honda have won a lawsuit over a CR-V clone after a 12-year battle, the courts awarding it $2.4 million of the $45 million in damages it was seeking. If JLR is successful in court, it is likely that other automakers may follow suit.

Autonomous Rolls-Royce Concept. Rolls-Royce unveiled its first driverless vehicle, the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 last month in London. The vehicle measures just over 19-feet long and is designed without a steering wheel or a dashboard and is "powered by a zero emissions powertrain," according to the press release. Rolls-Royce has not announced when the vehicle is set to hit the streets, or how much it is expected to cost. Ford Fiesta's Having a Party. A celebration of four decades of the Ford Fiesta will take place at Brighton Racecourse this month. Organised by magazines Fast Ford, Classic Ford, Fast Car, and Retro Cars, the Ford Summer Festival will take place on Saturday 16 July, starting with a traditional ‘London to Brighton’ run including 40 Ford Fiestas to mark the small hatchback’s milestone birthday. Once at Brighton Racecourse there will be Ford displays, a retail area, live entertainment and onsite camping. Advanced entry tickets are priced at £10. Only 10€

Mini Vision Next 100 Concept. Another concept with 100 in it's name...this time it's the turn of Mini to celebrate BMW's 100th year. Named the Vision Next 100, the compact four-seater showcases a new design lineage that dismisses the retro look of today’s Mini models for a cleaner appearance. The Mini concept was unveiled alongside the Rolls-Royce concept and also highlights Mini’s ambition for future models to offer personal mobility, using the latest in autonomous driving and digital intelligence technology.

New Mercedes-Benz Electric SUV. The electric SUV concept is to be revealed at the Paris Motor Show this October. The manufacturer will preview a production version which will rival the Tesla Model X. It's Mercedes first step into an electric vehicle strategy and they aims to release four EVs by 2020.

H.M. The Queen's Cars by Jill Carter

In this 90th Birthday year of H.M. The Queen we take a snap shot of her motoring history. Bentleys, Rolls Royce's and Daimler Limousines in their Royal Claret livery make up the State Fleet of cars provided for use by the Queen and other members of the Royal family as well as visiting dignitaries. These cars are provided for use on official engagements and state visits and are unique in the fact that they are not required to display any registration number on the front or rear of the vehicle. The Daimler Limousines, however, together with the monarch's personal vehicles and those owned by other members of the Royal Family do display registration numbers.

Her Majesty, then Princess Elizabeth, became involved with vehicles during World War II when she joined the ATS, the women's branch of the British Army and served as a military truck driver. (Princess Elizabeth joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service at her own insistence in 1945, aged 18, as a Subaltern. By the end of the war she had reached the rank of Junior Commander, having completed her course at No. 1 Mechanical Training Centre of the ATS and passed out as a fully qualified driver). This may have inspired her deep regard for the Land Rover which persists to this day. A reported 80,000 GBP has been spent on refurbishing her Land Rover Defender which has been renamed the Carisma Defender D1. The photo shows new features of a plush interior with wifi, Bluetooth, a Bang & Olufson sound system, foldaway tables, a drinks cabinet with crystal glassware, fridge, variable mood lighting plus built in computers making a most comfortable workspace (see photo top right) The Land Rover has an impressive performance for such a weighty vehicle it's 2.2-litre diesel engine develops 122bhp, giving the Land Rover Defender a 0-62mph time of 14.7 seconds and a top speed of 90mph.

She also uses a green Land Rover Series 3 (above) owned by the Ministry of Defence which has been adapted so that people may see her more easily when undertaking Royal Duties and has a number of modifications perfect for a Head of State. It is thought that this vehicle was commissioned in 1978. Note the raised platform and glass screen. In 1979 the vehicle was sent to a workshop where engineers fitted an unconventional ‘traffic light system’,allowing Queen Elizabeth II to control the vehicle. The car is destined for auction on Saturday November 24th at the Historics at Brooklands near Weybridge, Surrey, with a guide price of 15,000-18,000 GBP which is expected to be easily exceeded. It appears to be in exceptional condition and has only covered 1,892 miles from new.

For leisure The Queen has used a 24 year old Land Rover, which she nicknamed “the Chuck Wagon”, specially built with a higher than normal roof for carrying deer killed in hunts on the Balmoral Estate (see photo above). It sold for 12,000 GBP despite the high recorded mileage of more than 153,000 miles. You may catch a glimpse of her Majesty driving herself around Sandringham and Balmoral sporting her trademark silk headscarf.

The 84th 24 Hours of Le Mans was held from 15 to 19 June at the Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans, France.

Neel Jani of Porsche started from pole position for the second consecutive year, but heavy rainfall forced the organisers to start the race behind a safety car. Once the rain had stopped and the track sufficiently dried, the field was released from under safety car conditions. Toyota, Audi, and Porsche traded off the race lead in the early hours until the No. 6 Toyota established a firm hold on first place, followed by the No. 5 Toyota and No. 2 Porsche. Issues for the No. 6 eventually allowed the No. 5 Toyota to take over the lead, maintaining a small gap from the Porsche.

Kazuki Nakajima was driving the Toyota to the finish in what looked likely to be Toyota’s first ever Le Mans victory. Then disaster struck in the closing three minutes of the race when it suffered a mechanical issue and stopped on the circuit just after crossing the line to start his last lap. Jani slipped past the ailing Toyota taking the race victory. It was Jani and co-driver Marc Lieb's first Le Mans win and Romain Dumas' second. The sister Toyota of Stéphane Sarrazin, Mike Conway, and Kamui Kobayashi finished three laps behind in second, while the No. 8 Audi of Loïc Duval, Lucas di Grassi, and Oliver Jarvis completed the race podium. Toyota later discovered the fault was a "defect on a connector on the air line between the turbocharger and the intercooler." An expensive mistake for such a small part of the car. 10 - 11 June 2016 Zaragoza June the 10th and 11th saw the 4th annual meeting of the Club Subaru España which was held in the picturesque town of Zaragoza. There were over 160 Subaru cars in attendance who, for the first time, were joined by Subaru Spain's head of public relations and press agency, Iñigo Trasmonte Garcia. Iñigo and his team brought with them 6 new Subaru models including the Forester, the Legacy, the XV and the all new Impreza WRX which was undoubtedly the star of the show. Iñigo explained that "one of Subarus distinctive features is the flat/boxer engine and all-wheel-drive which became standard equipment for mid-size and smaller cars by 1996". The 2 day event was perfectly orchestrated by Jonas Prado to include karting, sight-seeing and obviously a lot of convoy driving which left the whole region alive to the throaty rumble of 160 Subarus and lots of happy faces. Modified versions of the Impreza WRX and WRX STi have been competing successfully in rallying. Drivers Colin McRae (1995), Richard Burns (2001) and Petter Solberg (2003) have won World Rally Championship drivers' titles with the Subaru World Rally Team and Subaru took the manufacturers' title three years in a row from 1995 to 1997. Subaru's World Rally Championship cars are prepared and run by Prodrive, the highly successful British motorsport team. 14

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2016 Formula One The Formula 1 circus has had a busy four weeks with the Monaco GP followed by a trip across the Atlantic to Canada and back again a week later to Azerbaijan and another, but completely different, street circuit in Baku. Lewis Hamilton won in Monaco and Canada putting an end to a miserable run of events while Nico Rosberg had built up a 43 point advantage. Hamilton, it has to be said, was the recipient of his fair share of luck as questionable pit strategies by Red Bull (Monaco) and Ferrari (Canada) denied Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel what looked to be easy wins. Rain in Monaco meant a start behind the safety car and Ricciardo took the lead from pole position and dominated affairs until a fluffed pit stop (one stop too many in any case) dropped him to second behind a one stopping Hamilton. Ricciardo was furious after the race and even the usually available Christian Horner refused to be interviewed such was his embarrassment. Sergio Perez was a fine third with Rosberg struggling on the damp track to finish seventh. In Canada Vettel took the lead after a great start but then Ferrari threw it all away with a dodgy tyre strategy which forced him into stopping twice while all around him stopped just once. Again Hamilton was in position to benefit and in doing so closed the gap to Rosberg to nine points. Rosberg had a poor race and finished fifth with Bottas and Verstappen third and fourth. On then to Baku and what initially looked like a Formula E track with noise, actually turned out to be fine race circuit with high speed (220 mph) straights and unforgiving tight 16

sections. Many accidents during practice and qualifying promised plenty of action in the race and the forecast was for multiple safety car interruptions. Rosberg led from pole with Hamilton starting from tenth after a brush with a wall during Q3 and continued to lead to the finish line. Surprisingly there were no safety cars and all the drivers behaved themselves having found the track limits on the previous two days. Vettel was second with Perez having another good run in the Force India to finish third. The championship gap has opened again to 24 points as we head for Austria in early July.

WRC After what has been a horrible dip in form Thierry Neuville took victory in Sardinia for Hyundai and so became the fifth WRC winner in as many events following wins for Ogier, Latvala, Paddon and Meeke. The Belgian drove really well and proved that his car is a match for the VW Polos. Rough, dusty tracks hampered Ogier who was first on the road but he seemed happy with his third place behind Latvala in the other VW. Many cars came to grief due to hitting the rocks which were plucked out of the roads but Neuville overcame all the obstacles while maintaining an impressive turn of speed. While VW, Hyundai and Ford were battling it out in Sardinia, Citroen were testing next year’s car in Finland and the clips on You Tube are worth a look as Kris Meeke takes flying lessons over the notorious 1000 Lakes jumps.

Moto GP The Spanish round of the Moto GP championship resulted in a very popular win for the ever popular Valentino Rossi. A non finish for current champion Jorge Lorenzo allowed Marc Marquez, who finished second, to take over the series lead with Dani Pedrosa paying an infrequent visit to the podium in third Thierry Neuville place. The gap between Yamaha and Honda would appear to have diminished so we might have an exciting second half of the AMANDA season. A trip to this year’s Chelsea Flower Show in London unexpectedly gave us an article!

This garden is for an antique car enthusiast, with the planting designed to complement the vehicle. Planned as a two-tier structure, the ground floor offers essential off-road space for a car, but also a place for the family to relax. The roof top tier is planted as a garden.

These vintage Ice Cream vans were a lovely sight dotted around the showgrounds, although there wasn’t much business on the day we went, but nevermind, at least it didn’t rain!

to Orihuela, joining the A7/E15 at Benferri and headed towards Murcia. Onto the A30 at Murcia towards Albacete, coming off at Hellin onto the CM412. The CM412 from Hellin through Valdapenas to Ciudad Real is a stunner folks! After Ciudad Real we headed north on the N401, stopping near Urda at Consuegra to visit the castle and Cervantes' windmill â&#x20AC;&#x153;giants" from the epic Don Quijote. Again very impressive folks and a must see! When we eventually rolled into Toledo we were tired but ready to tackle the "find your hotel in a strange town" challenge. But no!! The good Burghers of Toledo know how to keep visitors happy and we simply followed the signs all the way from the ring road to the hotel door!! We booked in, unloaded the bike (the dirty bike!) and downed a couple of cold ones! Arrhhh! That's better! Then off to dine in a small but fantastic restaurant; 3 course, coffee, and wine 10euros! Result! We spent the entire next day exploring Toledo. there is too much to write about but here are some highlights: The Mezquita Christo de la Luz, Puerta de Bisagra, Hospital de Tavera (not a hospital but a great museum), Puerto de Sol (built by the Knights templar in the 14th century. the Templars have a long history/association with Toledo), Museo de Santa Cruz, The Alcazar, a military museum now that is a must!, Puente de Alcantara (original stone bridge built by the romans sometime BC!), The Cathedral, Synogogue Santa Maria Blanca, The Medieval Bridge- Puente San Martin, Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes. I could go on and on (what do you mean I have!!?) go to Toledo people, you will not be disappointed.

Ride 29: Toledo I was reading an article one day a while ago and discovered that two "world class" and "utterly exceptional" examples of Baroque and Renaissance art are here in Spain. It being a Catholic country it will come as no surprise that they are both to be found in churches! It may also come as no surprise that one of these is the Cathedral in Toledo. But what may be news to some of you (you lot being heathens an all!) is that the other is located right here on our doorstep in... (drum roll please)..... Orihuela! Hayley and I have visited "Colegio Santo Domingo" on more than one occasion. Soooo...Off to Toledo then eh?

Some tips: DO: *book a hotel with parking, it's not cheap in Toledo *visit the Alcazar- we spent 4 hours in there and only saw half of it! *go for two days at least, you won't get bored. DON'T: *eat or drink in plaza de Zocodover, one small Coke and one small Fanta, 7euros!!! *secure your bike with an extremely effective, expensive bike chain unless you're SURE you have not left the key 500 kilometres away in your house!! DOH!!! One locksmith, an angle grinder with diamond tip disc, 20 minutes and 90 euros- thank you very much!!! Stay safe, El Guiri

The world famous 37 and 3/4 mile Mountain Course is on public roads, which are closed to traffic during the races. The races take place in a timetrial format and the riders are in a class of their own. The course is not for the faint-hearted with many hazards including stone walls, trees, bumpy tracks and sharp corners.
