Editors Notes:

It’s time for change at the CCT as we hand over the magazine to a new owner.... We are delighted that the magazine will be continued to be run as a family business with the new owners and we are very happy that they will keep bringing you fun and interesting articles from the world of motoring. As self-confessed car nuts themselves, they are excited to take control and we wish them every success in the future. Although it is sad to say goodbye, it has been brilliant fun producing this magazine over the last 9 years and our grateful thanks go to all our advertisers (many who have become friends), our valuable writers and photographers; El Guiri, Richard O’Rourke, Jill Carter and Bruce Rowbotham as well as the many readers who have contributed with their own piece of motoring history. Thanks to Gregory and Kacper who do an excellent job of distributing the magazine ensuring that you can pick up your copy at the beginning of each month. Thanks to Ian and Dave for bringing this into my life, I have truly enjoyed the experience. Goodbye and happy motoring! Amanda Radwell

MOTORS IN THE NEWS

Brutal Launches S1 Supercar. Slovakian start-up car-maker Brutal has launched its S1 supercar, which was inspired by the Ariel Atom, weighing less than 900kg and powered by a 300hp Subaru STI-sourced 2.0-litre turbo boxer engine, the S1 is claimed to reach 100km/h in less than 3.9 seconds. The mid/rear-engined compact coupe comes with roof-hinged gullwing doors and a paintjob by renowned German automotive paint specialist Spies Hecker. 10 years in the making, the two-seat S1 rolls on a tubular frame chassis and wears a body constructed from fibreglass, carbon-fibre and special ‘Airex’ foam. The low-slung, wedge-shape body was designed by Jakub Štarman, who was a student at the Academy of Art and Design in Bratislava at the time, but now works for Skoda. “Given the level of demand, we assume that we can produce a maximum of six vehicles per year,” Brutal founder Marian Lušpai said. BMW Concept Link Electric Scooter Concept. At the annual Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, BMW have once again revealed a radical motorcycle concept. In previous years we have seen bikes that have become reality quite quickly, such as the Concept Ninety. This year BMW have presented the Concept Link, a zero-emission electric bike that is inspired by the self-balancing Vision Next 100, which we featured in a previous edition of the CCT. The compact electric motor driven that is powered by large, flat batteries in the underfloor area of the bike. This not only allows BMW to place the weight low down, it has also allowed them to create a distinctive look, which is further enhanced by the silver and matt black body. Babies Born Today May Never Need to Learn to Drive. The CEO of AXA UK Insurance has predicted that the car insurance sector will soon be completely disrupted by self-driving cars, with those born in 2017 likely to never need a driving lesson. Research is so fast-moving that self-driving vehicles could hit the roads within 15 years. Preparing for autonomous cars to be on the roads as soon as 2032, CEO Amanda Blanc said it is "crucial" for the insurance industry to build a framework for what will happen in the event of a car accident in future, when the driver is likely to be a computer.

New TVR. TVR has released more details of its upcoming sports car, 480bhp and 200mph for under £90,000, as well as this latest teaser photo. The car manufacturer has confirmed that they will reveal the car at the Goodwood Revival on Septmebr 8th. It will be the first new car from TVR since 2005.

Top 10 Most Expensive Cars in the World. Manufacturers tend to keep the prices of these cars private to potential customers, some we know but others we have a good estimate.

10. Koenigsegg Regera: $1.9-Million An 80 unit limited production plug-in hybrid exotic, the Swedish automaker admitted it has a four-year waiting list for its cars.

9. Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta: $2.1-Million The Aperta convertible was first seen at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. As expected, the convertible version demands a high premium over the standard coupe.

7. Pagani Huayra BC: $2.5-Million Bucking the trend again, the coupe costs more than the roadster, but the engine has been paired to a seven-speed automated manual transmission.

The Track

The Italian Job The circuit's location within Greater London made it a popular venue for film locations. In 1969, ‘The Italian Job’ filmed on the start line at Crystal Palace for the scene showing initial testing of the Mini Cooper getaway cars and in the paddock area for the scene where a security van is blown up and Michael Caine delivers his famous line “You’re only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!”. The Crystal Palace transmitter tower can be seen in the background of this scene.

at the

CRYSTAL PALACE

by Amanda Radwell

I grew up in South London and a lot of my younger years were spent in Crystal Palace Park. With a sports stadium, boating lake, concrete dinosaurs, a petting zoo, a maze, a dry ski slope (that you could use at any time with a bit of corrugated iron) and an adventure playground that looking back was obviously closed due to safety issues. There was also a track which is still there today for model cars to race. The park had a football ground which hosted the FA Cup Final from 1895-1914. The London County Cricket Club played matches at Crystal Palace Park Cricket Ground from 1900-1908.

The circuit was the venue for the London Grand Prix prior to WWII and in 1953 a new track layout opened with the inaugural event attracting 100,000 spectators. The circuit had a glory period between 1953 and 1972 as the venue for legendary sportscar, touring car, single-seater and motorbike showdowns. Most of the great drivers of the era took a turn around the track at some time during their careers, including Stirling Moss, Jim Clark, Graham Hill, John Surtees, Jackie Stewart, Jackie Ickx, James Hunt, Jochen Rindt and even Bernie Ecclestone.

The name Crystal Palace came from the Crystal Palace Exhibition building, which had been moved from Hyde Park, London after the 1851 Great Exhibition and rebuilt to form the centrepiece of the pleasure ground, before being destroyed by fire in 1936. Isambard Kingdom Brunel's water towers once famed throughout the British Empire for their height and grandeur, were taken down during WWII for fear they could be used as a navigational tool. The height of the land at Crystal Palace made it an ideal site for a transmission tower which was erected in the 50s and still provides television signals to the London area today.

The final international meet took place in 1972, where Mike Hailwood secured the fastest ever lap of the track, at an average speed of 103mph/166kmh. The final car race was held in the September of the same year and it wasn’t until 1997 that racing returned to the Palace, in the form of sprint racing. Millennium plans for the park stopped it after 4 years, but in 2010, Motorsport at the Palace was set up and hosts events celebrating the history of the track. The next event is on the 27th and 28th August 2017 and features classic car displays as well as racing from vintage to modern cars. Look at their website www.motorsportatthepalace.co.uk for more information.

So what’s this got to do with cars you may ask? Well, apart from attending a London to Brighton VW Beetle and Campervan run in a Beetle Buggy which started at the park in the year 2000, I was astonished to discover (only 4 years ago) that the park was one of the oldest motor sport venues in the world having staged its first motor race on ‘London’s Own Circuit, back in 1899. A permanent circuit was constructed in 1927, in which a single lap was one mile in length. By 1937 its length had doubled, just in time for the first London Grand Prix for cars rather than bikes. The race was won by the Siamese (Thai) Prince Bira at the wheel of his ERA 2B ‘Romulus’. His average speed was 56.5mph/91 kmh. Later that same year, Bira won the International Trophy race, also at Crystal Palace, the event being the first motor race ever to be broadcast on television by the BBC.

Much of the track is still evident in places around the park, taking a walk around there last year I could just imagine the noise and excitement of its racing days. You can get a real sense of why the top drivers of the time all wanted to prove themselves on the narrow circuit which was surrounded by trees and concrete walls. With its fast sweeping bends, the racetrack offered a unique challenge to the drivers.

Although its heyday has gone, there are some real hidden gems when you look around, this Gaudi-ish subway for example. It is a lovely park to visit if you are ever in the area.

2017

The 85th 24 Hours of Le Mans was held on the 17 and 18 June at the Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans, France.

The #2 Porsche 919 Hybrid claimed a dramatic victory in the 85th Le Mans 24 Hours in a race of attrition for LMP1 challengers which saw the LMP2 #38 Jackie Chan DC Racing Oreca leading with 65 minutes to go. Both Toyota and Porsche saw cars leading comfortably only to tumble into retirement with separate mechanical issues, the #7 Toyota TS050 Hybrid failing from the lead in the 10th hour while the #1 Porsche retired in the 20th hour, this resulted in an LMP2 car leading the Le Mans 24 Hours for the first time ever. The #38 Jackie Chan DC Racing Oreca driven by Ho-Ping Tung, Thomas Laurent and Oliver Jarvis was involved in its own LMP2 class battle when the #1 Porsche stopped to hand them a surprise lead.

The #2 Porsche, which spent an hour in the pits for a front axle issue earlier in the race, charged from 55th in the running order to come through the field. It only claimed the overall lead with 65 minutes remaining. Given the number of LMP1 retirements, the Porsche garage were fraught having seen #1 Porsche retire from a lead of 14 laps. But the #2 was successfully led home by Timo Bernhard for his second outright Le Mans win, and third in total, while co-driver Earl Bamber claims his second outright win to go with his 2015 triumph with Porsche and Brendon Hartley taking his first-ever Le Mans win. Despite the bittersweet ending for the lead LMP2 car, the #38 Jackie Chan DC Racing Oreca has made history as the first LMP2 car to lead outright at Le Mans plus a class victory and second place overall.

Car Broker Spain, Benijofar 626 006 074 or 966 367 634 Jaguar will kickstart its biggest assault on the global car market yet when it reveals the hotly anticipated E-Pace, its second SUV, this month. Jaguar is currently enjoying a significant boost in sales, in April the company reported an 83% increase in global sales for the year 2016/17, with the introduction of the F-Pace responsible for much of this. The smaller E-Pace, which will go head to head with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3, is expected to surpass its sibling’s success, it's softer styling appealing to a wider audience.

The E-Pace, which Jaguar has confirmed will be priced at less than £28,500 is a little less than the Audi Q3 but the same as the BMW X1. Jaguar’s director of design, Ian Callum, said: “The combination of sports car looks with Jaguar performance will ensure that the E-Pace stands out. Every Jaguar is designed to excite the senses, and we think E-Pace will do just that.”

Power comes from 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol and 161bhp and 178bhp diesels. It’ll be offered with either front or four wheel drive and a choice of either a six-speed manual or eight-speed auto gearbox. Higher up the range will be a 237bhp 2.0-litre diesel and a 247bhp 2.0-litre petrol. The E-Pace could also be the first model to receive Jaguar’s new hybrid powertrain.

THE MOTORSPORT MONTH by Richard O'Rourke 2017 Formula One Lewis Hamilton took his 65th pole position in Canada and equalled the record of his hero Ayrton Senna and then went on to take a fine win ahead of his Mercedes team mate, Valtteri Bottas with Daniel Ricciardo third. Hamilton closed the championship gap to Vettel to 12 points after Ferrari had a poor day by their recent standards and 18 year old Canadian, Lance Stroll, scored his first ever points by finishing 9th. On then to Baku and the Azerbaijan GP around the streets of the capital city. If I had a full page or even the full magazine I couldn’t fit in all the incidents which took place in one of the most exciting races ever seen but here goes anyway. There were 3 safety cars after various incidents and then the race was stopped for a while because of more debris on the track. Ricciardo won after being in 17th place after an unscheduled pit stop, Bottas was second after being in last place following a stop for a nose change after a coming together with Raikkonen, Stroll was third, taking his first podium, after a steady drive and was only passed by Bottas on the finish line. Vettel was fourth after being given a 10 second stop go penalty for driving into Hamilton behind the safety car. Hamilton finished fifth after he had to pit from the lead because of a loose headrest which had not been secured properly during the race stoppage. Verstappen retired from third place, Massa retired from fourth place, the two Force Indias bumped into each other while 5th and 6th causing retirement for Perez while Ocon recovered to finish 6th. McLaren scored their first points of the

season with 9th place for Alonso. Controversy, incidents, accidents, overtakes and more talking points than a political debate. In the end Vettel still leads the championship by 14 points over Hamilton but the gloves are off for the rest of the season.

Canada

MotoGP Three Moto GPs this month and two out of the three were won by Andrea Dovizioso on his Ducati. As a result he now leads the championship but it is very tight at the top with just a handful of points separating Dovi, Viñales, Rossi and Marquez. Dovi won in Italy where the crowd wanted a Rossi win but an Italian on an Italian bike was fair compensation. He won again in Spain ahead of Marquez and Pedrosa and all the time was closing in on Viñales whose flying start to the season has slowed somewhat. More bad news for Viñales in Holland where he crashed and saw his championship rival take fifth place and the championship lead. Rossi won the race after a great battle with Danilo Petrucci while Marquez just edged out Cal Crutchlow who came from nowhere to third only to be pipped by the works Honda on the last lap.

WRC The Italian round of the WRC took place in Sardinia and was won by Ott Tanak in the M Sport Fiesta, the Estonian taking his maiden WRC win. The dusty, rock strewn roads took their toll on the machinery and many drivers fell by the wayside. Worst to suffer was Kris Meeke who crashed out while leading the rally and who was later to learn that he was to be dropped for the upcoming round in Poland, the reason being given was to allow Meeke to get his head together after a series of heavy shunts. Andreas Mikkelsson came into the Citroen team in Sardinia and didn’t exactly set the world on fire which makes one wonder about the rumours that the C3 suspension is at fault and is inclined to pitch the car into the air when at full stretch over bumps. Poland will be fascinating and may well be the catalyst where the Citroen/ Meeke/ Mikkelsson puzzle is concerned. Meanwhile Ford, Hyundai and Toyota are getting on with the job and are in a mighty battle for championship honours in both driver’s and manufacturer’s categories. Ogier still leads from Neuville, Tanak and Latvala. Le Mans 24 Hour The annual upallnighter nearly threw up the greatest ever shock in the history of the event when, with just a few hours to go, the race was led by a LMP2 car. The super fast but fragile LMP1 machines had fallen by the wayside and it was left to the sole remaining Porsche 919 to come from last place to first to scrape the win. All three Toyotas failed to finish as did the number 1 Porsche which broke down while holding an 11 lap lead and seemingly cruising home. The number 2 Porsche had electrical trouble early in the race but was able to haul it’s way through the field while the team had everything crossed to save the embarrassment of being beaten by a modest V8 engined car.

Formula E Sebastien Buemi has extended his lead to 32 points after picking up his 12th career win in the all-electric single seater series. However, the Renault e.dams driver was not first across the line around the revamped Tempelhofring airfield circuit, but when on-the-road winner Felix Rosenqvist was given a 10-second penalty for an unsafe release in the pits, he was there to pick up the pieces. The next race is in New York on July 15th.

Smoking Can Damage Your Health – But Sex Is A No-No! by Bruce Rowbotham Racing car colours are evocative. British cars proudly painted British Racing Green raced around the world for decades, right until 1968 when Lotus boss Colin Chapman pulled off a major coup by getting a sponsorship deal with Imperial Tobacco. Overnight the team was rebranded as “Gold Leaf Team Lotus” and the Lotus 49 with it's traditional livery of green with a yellow nose-cone was repainted in Red, Gold and White and carried the Gold Leaf logos. The other major teams followed, eager to secure the big money offered by tobacco companies; McLaren teamed up with Marlboro, Ligier with Gitanes. Lotus remained with Imperial Tobacco, later shifting brand to the “John Player Special” in 1972 with the distinctive black and gold livery. Formula One was growing quickly in popularity as a spectator sport, although the BBC TV only gave limited coverage to the British Grand Prix and certain “glamour” events, like Monza or the Monaco Grand Prix.

In 1976 the BBC arrived at Brands Hatch to cover the non championship Formula One “Race of Champions.” The Surtees Racing Organisation, operated by John Surtees arrived with their cars ready to race. Their sponsors were Durex, the brand name was boldly displayed everywhere. The BBC sports producer, Ricky Tilling knew the party line and the BBC certainly did not consider Durex logos acceptable for family viewing and asked Surtees to cover them up. Surtees was under contract to his sponsors and refused, so Tilling, Murray Walker and the BBC sports team packed up and went home. By 1978 the Surtees Team had withdrawn due to lack of funding. Television ratings wars were being waged and the BBC finally committed itself to cover an entire Formula One season. Any form of advertising was always a vexed issue for the BBC and tobacco advertising was becoming even more controversial. Racing cars were now mobile bill-boards promoting smoking. A solution had to be found. In the end it was easy, the problem was overcome or perhaps overlooked? - By agreeing to make Motor Racing a Special Case.

Safety in Hot Cars As editor of this magazine, I hear all too often about children dying from heatstroke in hot cars. Parents forget that their child is in the car. Now there are 4 technologies that have been designed to prevent this occuring. 1. Sensorsafe is a technology found in some car seats from the brand Evenflo. There is a receiver that goes into your car’s diagnostics port, a socket located inside a vehicle that accesses various vehicle subsystems where small receivers can be installed to tap into a car's computer system. That receiver communicates with the car seat's smart chest clip, letting the driver know through a series of chimes whether a child is still in the seat after the car is turned off. 2. General Motor's Rear Seat Reminder System. This feature in some GM cars uses back door sensors that become activated when either the rear door is opened or closed within 10 minutes of the vehicle being started, or while the vehicle is running. Under these circumstances, when you reach your destination a reminder appears on the dashboard as well as an audible chime notification. "Rear Seat Reminder. Look In Rear Seat."

3. Driver’s Little Helper Sensor System is a sensor system that can be put in a car seat. The sensor goes under the car seat padding where the child sits. The sensor is then attached to a battery pack and synced with an app. You can set when you want the app to send you notifications after you stop the car. You can set the interval for when you receive the notification, the fastest being a minute. Also, if you don’t respond to the notification, Driver’s Little Helper will send a text and email to your emergency contacts. 4. Waze, a popular traffic app, has a setting that will remind a driver to check his or her back seat when a destination entered into the app is reached. But it won’t alert a driver during an impromptu stop. Experts say an important thing to remember when using app-based alerts is to make sure your mobile phone is charged. A simple solution is to leave your purse or briefcase in the back seat, telling the nursery to call if you haven’t arrived as scheduled or making a habit of always looking in the back seat before you walk away from the car.

area. Leaving the CM-412, we climbed steeply up a narrow but well paved series of switchbacks and gentler curves that eventually deposited us in the Hamlet that was to be our home for the next three nights. The solid, stone built houses, bar and 15th Century church are overlooked by the ruins of a 12th century Moorish castle that rests atop the rocky mound like a battered crown. The area used to be renowned for it's metallurgy, aided by the proximity of the Zinc and bronze mines. Like so many locations, the main "industry" is now Tourism though. For instance, whilst "Old Riopar" has only 5 residents, the Pueblo boasts at least 20 separate "Casas Rurales" or houses to rent.

A group of riders meet on Thursdays at 9.30am (weather permitting) at Waldermars, La Florida. Call 671 826 201 or email mollyandbaileybassett@hotmail.com if you fancy joining them.

Ride 40: RIOPAR This country never ceases to amaze me! Riopar lies in Albacete, Castilla-La Mancha; which geographically speaking, is right on our doorstep...230 kilometers and you're there. Easily accessed via the CM-412 and A7 or A31 autovias, it nonetheless feels like it's a million miles away from the Coast. Riopar has a population of 1498, but Riopar de Viejo (Old Riopar!) had a mere 5, yes FIVE, registered inhabitants at the last Census. So when 20 members of our club rocked up for a long weekend we outnumbered the "locals" by 4 to 1! Three kilometers north east of Riopar, "Old Riopar"sits 1100 meters above the surrounding countryside upon one of the many craggy outcrops that are common to the

The next two days saw us exploring the area both on foot and via two wheels (or three in one case! LOL). The roads are stunningly picturesque and (mostly! LOL!) well surfaced. In the midst of the Los Calares nature park, Leonard Vultures, Royal Eagles and Peregrine Falcons observed our progress as we wound our way to"Nacimiento del Rio Mundo" (source of the Rio Mundo). The actual "springs" are not what anyone goes to see though! The real Showstopper are the glorious waterfalls that cascade from the mountain and mark the real start of the river 'proper'! Absolutely gorgeous. If you love nature and yearn for a "retreat", this place takes some beating. Whether you explore on 4, 2 or 3 wheels or even on foot....there really is beauty abundance all around you. Not your typical "Biker haunt" maybe, but it certainly recharged our batteries and got our motors running! Stay safe, El Guiri.

There is nothing else like the Isle of Man TT Races, it captures the imagination in a way no other race can and its sheer spectacle and uniqueness delight fans all over the world. The races are held on such a challenging track, the 37 mile Mountain Course with its huge series of bends, bumps, jumps, stone walls, manhole covers and telegraph poles. The skill, bravery and concentration levels required are phenomenal, with speeds approaching 200mph, and, while difficult to learn and even harder to come first, the rewards for winning on the world famous course are like no other. With 110 years of history, rich in tradition and legends, to have your name inscribed on a TT trophy is a lifetime honour.

Bruce Anstey retained his SES TT Zero title with a win in the electric race on the Mugen Roku machine for his 11th Isle of Man win. He took the victory with a speed of 117.710mph, beating Guy Martin by 42 seconds. For the first time, all eight starters finished the race.

Former world champions Ben and Tom Birchall won both sidecar races, setting a lap record in the process of 117.119mph.

27th May - 9th June 2017 Peter Hickman claimed the trophy after taking five podiums and getting the best accumulative results through the week. It was only Hickman's fourth appearance at the TT but the British Superbike rider has enjoyed the his best results at the event to date. He said “I came here with no podiums but to leave with five is amazing and although it would have been nice to win, I can't complain as to ride round today with so many fans lining the track was brilliant".

Tyco BMW's Ian Hutchinson won the Superbike race taking the win by five seconds after holding off a late charge from Peter Hickman. Michael Dunlop

Guy Martin on the Honda

John McGuinness was absent from the TT after a crash at the North West 200 the month before. The Honda Racing Driver broke four vertebrae, three ribs and fractured his leg. Honda's new Fireblade was not as far down the development cycle as Honda would have hoped after its late arrival, which caused the team's other rider Guy Martin to have a poor TT. He even pulled out of the Senior race due to not having enough practice.

Ian Hutchinson

Michael Rutter claimed his fifth Isle of Man TT win after a fantastic ride on the Italian Paton machine in the Lightweight race. It was Rutter's first win around the Mountain Course at the TT since he won the electric race in 2013, while his previous win on a traditional petrol fuelled machine was achieved back in 1998.

Michael Dunlop secured victory in the red-flagged 2017 Senior race for his 15th career win at the TT. After the initial Senior race was stopped when Ian Hutchinson came off at the 27th milestone on lap two, suffering a broken femur, race officials confirmed a four-lap restart.

A Funny Thing Happened.... by Richard O’Rourke In a series of articles Richard O’Rourke recalls some amusing incidents which occurred during his time as roving photographer and reporter for Motoring News in the 1980s and ‘90s.

Dr John and Things That Go Wrong The life of a motorsport photographer is not all sunshine, nice places, fancy food and non-stop action. Kielder forest on a cold and wet November night is not my idea of fun and nor is 40 deg on a humid day at the side of a dusty forest track. Now I know which of the two I’d prefer, seeing as I now live in Spain, but nonetheless it was the latter which nearly caused my downfall way back when I came to be rescued by a now famous doctor. It was Cyprus and David Llewellin was driving for Audi in an effort to win the European Rally Championship. He was co-driven by Phil Short in the Quattro and the Audi team (as they do) turned out in force to give the Welshman the best possible chance of success. On day 2 of the rally (Saturday) Llewellin was in the lead but the team were concerned about the car’s performance in the high temperatures and dust which clogged the air filters. We all traipsed back to Nicosia at the end of the day but when I went to my room I felt distinctly unwell so I lay on the bed and fell asleep. When I didn’t show for dinner one of my press colleagues came to fetch me and discovered my sorry state and very soon returned with a man who introduced himself as Doctor John. He quickly diagnosed my condition and administered an injection and a magic potion which had me up and at it in under an hour. I went for dinner and afterwards asked at reception who the hotel doctor was and how could I contact him to say thanks and pay him his well deserved fee. It was then that I learned that Dr Christian John was in fact the Audi Sport team doctor who was there to monitor the crew and mechanics as part of a project to assess the effects of extreme conditions on rally crews. I met the man and thanked him and it turned out that I had nothing worse than a bad case of dehydration and the medicine he gave me was a concoction of

glucose and other magic ingredients which the crews carried in the car’s drink bottles. A few years ago I was reading an article in Motor Sport magazine about the preparations Audi had made for their very successful attack on the Le Mans 24 Hour Race and, lo and behold, there was the same Dr John who had prepared a program of diet and sleep cycles to combat the effects of fatigue on the drivers in this, the most arduous of motorsport events. He has been the Audi Sport team doctor for 31 years and since their withdrawal from the WEC is now concentrating his valuable efforts on the DTM drivers in Germany. Hot weather is not the only thing that can get you and I have been the victim of all kinds of biting and stinging things over the years, not to mention the odd attack by the rally cars themselves. Sometimes my camera case resembled a pharmacist’s bag with all the anti this and anti that stuff stored within as well as the ubiquitous box of sticky plasters. Attacks by rally cars were few and far between because, like all rally snappers, I always made sure I had an escape route planned in case a driver lost it and headed in my direction. I also wore very bright clothing, mostly a bright orange waterproof suit, to make myself a bit more visible in the largely gloomy Irish and UK

weather. On one occasion I was perched on a ditch when a car hit the ditch opposite and then headed in my direction, Having got the shot (I think) I then executed a gentle roll off the ditch and into the field. So far so good I thought but on the way down I passed through a bramble bush and ended up lying in something a cow had left behind! I emerged a bit scratched and smelly to the cheers of the many spectators and pride more than professionalsm told me to get back on the ditch and continue snapping, which I did. A fellow member of the Phoenix Car Club and a keen photographer recently asked me about the camera equipment I was using so for all you camera geeks here goes. I always used Canon cameras and carried two A1 SLR bodies (lighter than the F1) and my lens selection (all Canon FD) was made up of a 28mm wide angle, standard 50mm, 135 medium range and a 500mm telephoto mostly used for racing. A Metz flash for night shots and a compact Canon sureshot A210 completed the kit. Film, (remember that stuff), was Kodak TriX black and white and Fuji 200 and 400 for the colour transparencies. Nowadays it is still Canon with a 60D camera, 10-20 wide angle, 17-85 medium and 70-200 long range.
