65 YEARS LAND ROVER
It all started in 1947 when Maurice Wilks, Rover's technical chief, needed a vehicle to navigate around his farm in Anglesey. Wilks obtained a Willys Jeep then proceeded to modify it, this would eventually evolve into the Series I Land Rover of 1948. The first prototype was chassis number LR1 with registration number HUE 166.
The Series I sold 200,000 units in ten years, Series II came in 1958 which had selectable 4WD and a diesel engine. In 1990 this evolved into the Series III and what we know as the Defender. It still remains very popular selling 25,000 a year across the world.
In 1967 British Leyland Motor Corporation took over Rover and continued to produce the Land Rover series. With the introduction of the Range Rover models in the 70’s it wasn’t until 1978 that Land Rover became a company of it’s own.
To date the thoroughbred of the series I has developed into a wide range of four wheel drive models including the Defender, Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and the latest Range Rover Evoque.
To celebrate its 65th birthday a special Defender has been launched "Defender Special Edition LXV" (Left). Available in 5 versions, two colours, 2.2ltr 122bhp engine and 16 inch alloys.

The Mille Miglia May 16-19
The Mille Miglia 2013 was held on the scenic roads of Italy, starting from Brescia to Rome and back, on the fabled Mille Miglia roads to cross through 196 cities on the Italian peninsula, including San Marino, Florence, Siena and Maranello. The cars taking part were all selected from vehicles that either did race or could have raced in the 24 editions of the Mille Miglia held from 1927 to 1957. Along the way, they had to perform dozens of time, speed and distance trials. 415 crews embarked on the journey and 340 successfully returned to Viale Venezia in Brescia and the remaining 75 cars either withdrew from the race or dropped out.
This year we were treated to beautiful famous faces to match the cars - this year, British models David Gandy and Yasmin Le Bon took part in the 1000 mile race.
This years winners were the Argentinian crew of Juan Tonconogy and Guillermo Berisso in their 1927 Bugatti Type 40 with points totaling 35,417. (Right and far right)

Also in May, a convoy of hundreds of Lamborghinis drove across Italy as part of the celebrations. The parade of Lamborghinis was driven by owners, collectors and fans from all over the world. The Grand Tour started in Milan, through Bobbio, then Forte dei Marmi, Bologna and ending three days later at Sant’Agata Bolognese, headquarters of Lamborghini where it finished with a celebratory dinner.
50 Years of Lamborghini. Lamborghini have been celebrating their 50th anniversary with a number of events planned throughout the year. Last month these included a launch of their new car called the Egoista. The car seats one and is powered by a 5.2 litre V10 engine that puts out 600 horsepower. The driver’s compartment is built separately from the rest of the car to act as a “survival cell,” inspired by the design of the Apache attack helicopter, the company said. Lamborghini indicated that unlike the special anniversary edition of its Aventador sports car that rolled out last month, the Egoista will not go into regular series production. The company said Lamborghinis may be cars for the few, but the Egoista is “a car for itself” that will “always remain a dream, for everyone.”
The World's Most Expensive Toyota. A 45 year old Toyota 2000GT coupe has been sold at auction for $1.2 million, that's over 900,000€. The interior of this 2000GT, which has just 62,000 on the clock, had been restored to high standards. The two seat hardtop coupe was first displayed to the public at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1965 and dubbed as ´Japan's first supercar´. It had a top speed of 135mph and only 62 were ever built, with a handful of these exported out of Japan. The sale of the sports car was handled by Canadian-based RM Auctions. A spokesperson Megan McGrail explained why this six-cylinder car fetched such a high price. 'The 2000GT was the Japanese E-Type, a car that could run against the best that Europe had to offer. It has been credited with establishing the Toyota name as a force to be reckoned with in the automotive world. Today, the 2000GT is universally described as the most collectible, desirable, and valuable Japanese automobile ever produced.'
Renault Megane Renaultsport Red Bull Racing RB8. F1 winning team Red Bull has teamed up with F1 engine producer’s Renault to produce a special hot hatch to celebrate winning its third consecutive F1 constructor’s title. It uses the same engine as the Renaultsport Megane 265 Cup, a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering 261bhp. 30 cars are going to the UK and will be available to buy until the end of Sept.

Police Car Technology The Past and The Future
This Triumph TR4 police car was owned by Southend-on-Sea constabulary in 1962 as their 'fast pursuit' car. The technology of the day included in the sporty car was: 1. A Pye radio; 2. A Winkworth bell; 3. Air horns; 4. A windscreenmounted, hand-operated lamp. The convertible car had a top speed of around 110mph and was ideal The Past for pursuing bank robbers who tried to get away in their powerful but heavy Jaguar cars. There were no seatbelts in the car and the only police markings were a discreet sign on the front grille and a stop sign on the boot. It was eventually retired from service in the 1970s and the car was last sold to its current owner in 1991 who decided to restore it to original police specification. A spokesperson for the auctions said ”The TR4 is one of those cars which really needs to be seen. It is a genuine period police car. Standard police cars were normally saloons but the odd force would buy something different. This is probably the only one left.” This Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer seems to be a standard twenty first century police car, but underneath its shell is a different story. The car also has high speed broadband internet allowing the upload of CCTV footage and photos to a central crime database, enabling high speed communication and information sharing; 4. Advanced computer software boarded onto the Astra’s three main computers are capable of predicting future crime hotspots; 5. Kimi took second place with Felipe Massa third and Sebastian back in fourth. After such a promising start, Mercedes' Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton faded to sixth and 12th respectively. The cars struggled with high tyre usage and were unable to hold onto their positions.

Start in Spain Fernando stayed in third until the first pit stops, during which he leapfrogged Sebastian and then took the lead from Nico on lap 13. Fernando then opened up a lead ahead of now second placed Kimi. Fernando was on a four-stop strategy while Kimi was on a three, so the Ferrari driver concentrated on building up enough of a lead to enable him to make the

26th May Monte Carlo, Monaco In a repeat of the last race, Nico took pole position ahead of Lewis Hamilton, but this time, the German driver was able to make the start pay and led throughout the race to finish in first place. Lewis stayed in second place for the first part of the race ahead of the Red Bulls but dropped to fourth when he was forced to make his pit stop on the same lap as Nico because neither had stopped by the time the safety car came out. Sebastian Vettel moved into second with Mark Webber behind. After the race, Sebastian said “We had a fantastic start but there was no room to overtake.. I was surprised by the slow pace of the opening laps, you expect two silver arrows in front of you and we had two buses in front going for a cruise”. The race was strewn with crashes and safety-car periods, one after Felipe Massa crashed out on lap 30. The Brazilian's accident was almost identical to one he had the day before, smashing into the barrier on the outside of the track after locking his front tyres over a bump in the braking zone for the corner. There was a half-hour stoppage caused by a collision on lap 46 between Marussia's Max Chilton and Williams's Pastor Maldonado which damaged the barriers at Tabac corner. Sergio Perez crashed into Kimi Räikkönen, the last in a series of controversial incidents involving Sergio at the chicane after the tunnel. As the frustrating race ended, Nico enjoyed his second win of his career, with Sebastian taking second and Mark Webber third.

The Peugeot 205 is 30 this year and we fondly remember the 205 GTi which was launched in 1984. The era of the hot hatches; a powerful engine with sporty suspension in a lightweight car. A cracking combination and the 205 GTi jumped to the top of the hot hatch market ahead of the VW Golf GTi's and Renault 5 Turbos for those looking for a sporty car that could be used every day. Originally it came with a 1.6 litre engine producing 105bhp, which was then upgraded to 115bhp during 1986. It was joined in the range by a 130bhp 1.9 litre flagship at the end of 1986. The fate of the 205 GTi and indeed the whole golden age of the hot hatch was sealed in the 90s due to rising restrictions regarding emissions and insurance premiums going through the roof. here is always something new and interesting at the Ace Cafe meetings and the star was a 1934 Packard in pristine condition. The car`s appearance at this month’s meeting was the result of one of those chance encounters, when Adrian Marshall spotted the owner refuelling the car and handed him an invitation by way of one of our “Ace Cafe” cards. This big car is a feast of Cream and Chrome. A two seater with an occasional dicky seat behind, fitted with an 8 cylinder engine of 5 litres capacity. This one has spent all its life in Spain. Ride 4: Cabo de Palos The misty, cool start to the day put off a few of the 'weaker souls'. And so it was our small band of hardy adventurers set off down the AP7 for Cabo de Palos. At least MOST of us managed to turn up on time didn't we JOHN?! LOL!! Taking the exit for Los Urritias we went through El Algar and on to La Union along the N332 in quickly clearing weather. By the time we reached Cartagena to join the N343 for Escombreras, the sun was shining and all was well with the world! The N343 is a 'weird' piece of tarmac! Lovely curves, not too badly surfaced, a couple of 1950's movie-style tunnels, great views of a craggy coastline; all set against a backdrop of the mass industrialisation of the numerous oil/gas refineries etc looking something akin to a James Bond film: "Ahhh, Mr Guiri! I've been expecting you!!" At Escombreras we headed for Portman on the RM320. A bumpy, twisty bit of single carriageway with some interesting views (including one of a landfill site! He really knows how to spoil us that Rob Eh?) Turn right onto the N345 and everything goes up a gear; views, road surface, speed.... etc as you climb up and over Monte de las Cenizas before joining the RM314 to ride through La Manga Golf resort. Then it was a quick blat down the RM12 autovia to Cabo de Palos lighthouse. A very appealing part of the coast, it always reminds me of Cornwall: crags, inlets and traffic jams in summer!! After refreshments in the nearby marina, it was Los Nietos, Los Urritias and Los Alcazares then a final stop in San Pedro.
5th May Spain, Jerez Jorge Lorenzo was on pole with Dani Pedrosa behind him and they were close until Pedrosa took the lead on lap 6. He went onto take the win by 2.5 seconds. It was his first win of the 2013 season and in front of his home crowd. Marc Marquez, sitting in third, was closing in on Lorenzo and spotted that Lorenzo had left the door “a little open” and rode up the inside to try and snatch second place. They made contact and the Yamaha was bumped wide while Marquez claimed the position and finished in second. Lorenzo was not pleased, but confessed he had made a mistake by not closing the door more firmly on the way into the corner. The result meant Lorenzo lost the championship lead to Marquez and just to add insult to injury; it was the same corner that had been renamed in Lorenzo's honour the day before! The huge 111,000 strong crowd were ecstatic to see three Spaniards on the podium. 19th May France, Le Mans Dani Pedrosa won at the French circuit to become the first rider to win two races this season. He drove an impressive race coming from sixth place to take the win. Cal Crutchlow took second place ahead of Marc Marquez, who made a poor start but fought his way to take the last place on the podium, maintaining his podium finish at every race in his first season in the MotoGP class. Pedrosa now heads the Championship 6 points ahead of Marquesa.
