There’s some treats inside our June issue, first on our cover is the revamped Juke, a car we have followed since we first saw it’s concept at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2010. While Mercedes dominate Formula One, we look at some older cars competing in the Mille Miglia, which took place in Italy in May. Rolls Royce celebrate 110 years in the auto industry and we chart their history on page 13. Also on a racing theme, Jill Carter looks at the racing in the second part of her report from the Goodwood 72nd Member’s Meeting. The Nissan Juke caused an almighty stir when it was released in 2010, with its unconventional styling it won the hearts and minds of European buyers and was Nissan’s second best selling vehicle. Four years on and it faces huge amounts of copycat rivals in what has now become the fastest growing segment in Europe, so now it’s time to be revised to keep the music playing.
The Juke’s feedback from its drivers were that the boot is too small, so Nissan has addressed this by repackaging the boot with a two stage flooring system as well as flat folding rear seats.
So what’s changed for 2014? The exterior facelift has freshened up the outside but has still kept the overall character. There are new front and rear bumpers, projector lamps for the lower headlights, striking front and rear LEDs and that chrome ‘V’ in the grille to mimic the new Qashqai and X-Trail models. Lots more colour coding with new exterior colour choices.

Jaguar E-Type Lightweight
Jaguar have announced that they are going to build 6 lightweight versions of the E-Type. In 1963, Jaguar were going to make 18 versions of this competition car, but actually only built 12. Now they are using the last 6 chasis to finish the job and make 6 more identical cars, with the same 3.8-litre all-aluminium straight-six engine as the original car. MOTORS IN THE NEWS First Formula E Racing Cars Delivered. The 10 teams competing in the new FIA Formula E Championship received their first Spark-Renault SRT_01E race cars last month. Formula E is the FIA's new fully-electric single-seater championship designed to appeal to a new generation of motorsport fans, whilst accelerating the interest in electric vehicles and promoting sustainability. Racing entirely on temporary city-centre race tracks, it uses cars capable of speeds of more than 150mph. It’s 10 teams feature some of the leading international names in motorsport along with high-profile environmental supporters including Sir Richard Branson and Leonardo DiCaprio. Pre-season testing begins on the 3rd of July with all five dates open for free at Donington Park Racing Circuit in the UK. The first of 10 city-centre races takes place in Beijing on September 13.
Longest Line of Toy Cars Ever. Beaulieu Motor Museum has set a world record for the ‘longest line of toy cars ever’. Beaulieu had to beat the current world record of 14,310 cars which was set in Germany last year. They nearly beat this record by 10,000, achieving a massive 24,189 cars. The car trail was over 2km around the grounds at Beaulieu and they will now be sold to raise money for charity. Some of the model cars were signed and donated by celebrities, including Sir Stirling Moss, who donated a model of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR in which he won the Mille Miglia race in 1955. Land Speed Record breakers Richard Noble OBE and Wing Commander Andy Green OBE have added signed models of their vehicles Thrust II and Thrust SSC.

Nissan Pulsar. Nissan has launched a Golf rival, the Pulsar. The new Qashqai-based Pulsar is roomier, more thrifty and higher-tech than its hatchback rivals, Nissan says its technology includes rear-view cameras on all models, with lane departure and blind-sport warnings. Also available is automatic emergency braking. It’s due for sale in 965 41 98 57 the autumn.

The Mille Miglia May 15-18
The Mille Miglia 2014 was different to previous years, taking place over 4 days rather than 3 and following the route that was taken between 1927 to 1957. The route was 1,600kms through the stunning Italian scenery, starting and finishing in Brescia. The 435 cars that took part were all selected from vehicles that had raced in the 24 editions of the Mille Miglia held from 1927 to 1957. Along the way, they had to perform dozens of time, speed and distance trials. The total number of time trials rose to 74, which included six predefined average speed navigation trials. In this type of trial drivers must maintain a constant average speed.
This year there were many famous faces taking part in this historic race. Martin Brundle, Bruno Senna, Jeremy Irons, Brian Johnson, Jodie Kidd and Jay Leno.

2014 11th May Catalunya, Spain Lewis Hamilton was on pole and on the long run to the first corner, he took the lead ahead of teammate Nico Rosburg. By lap 13, Lewis had built up a 2.6 second lead. Lewis pitted first, with Nico 3 laps later. Mercedes chose to use different tyre strategies for the drivers, Nico on the hard tyre, with Lewis on the mediums. Nico had to bring the gap between them down to 2 seconds by the next pit stop to win the race, whereas Lewis had to maintain a 4 second gap if he was to win. After the final pit stops, Lewis was 4.8 seconds ahead, but Nico closed in on him and the last two laps of the race were exciting as Nico closed the gap to less then 1 second and so able to use DRS. A small error on turn 10 by Nico allowed Lewis to cross the line in first place. It was his first win in Spain and he was delighted, I guess also because he took the lead at the top of the table, three points ahead of Nico. He has won four of the five races so far. Daniel Ricciardo took the third spot on the podium, 49 seconds behind Lewis. Sebastian Vettel had a great race, starting in 15th position and finishing in fourth. Niki Lauda from the Mercedes team commented "Lewis Hamilton is unbeatable. It's very simple to say. Because he's getting better and better every race, he makes no mistake whatsoever and he's very focused. You can't beat the guy. Nico tried every trick today to get him. And he did a good job, but he couldn't pass him. Lewis is outstanding at this moment."

25th May Monte Carlo, Monaco The race was overshadowed by qualifying in the Mercedes camp, when Nico ran off the track after setting the fastest time. Lewis was part way through his fastest lap, two tenths up on Nico. Lewis felt he deliberately went off causing the yellow flag and so stopping Lewis claiming pole. The stewards found no issue with it, it was just Lewis left fuming. So Nico started on pole and made a good start taking the lead. Lewis followed him, then we saw the first safety car of the race, on lap one when Sergio Pérez hit Jenson Button and went off into the barriers. Daniel Ricciardo made a bad getaway and fell down to fifth. Sebastian Vettel had problems and retired with an engine problem. Another safety car stint saw the drivers pit, with Lewis missing a chance to jump Nico by not coming in immediately. Nico held onto the lead with Lewis close behind, but the Brit had vision problems with some dirt that had got under his visor and dropped off the chase. Daniel's Red Bull was flying in the closing stages and was challenging Lewis, but wasn't able to get past him, so he took third again. Fernando Alonso came in fourth. Nico takes back the championship lead and the atmosphere between the two friends is strained as they fight for the championship, certain that one of them will Nico Rosburg lift the crown.
Jack Brabham was born in Australia in 1926. He helped his friend build a small open-wheel car for racing on dirt ovals, then took over the driving from him in 1948. He went on to win the Australian Speedway Championship and two further titles with the car. He moved into Road Racing in 1953, winning many races and championships in Australia. In 1955, he moved from Australia to Europe to drive for Charles and John Cooper. The same year, he built a Bobtail mid-engined sports car and competed with Stirling Moss and proved to himself that he was capable to compete in F1. In 1959, Cooper built a championship-winning car and with Brabham behind the wheel he won the Championship for the first time. He repeated the feat the following year. He then set up his own company with Ron Tauranac building race cars and in 1962, Brabham left Cooper and raced for the Brabham Racing Organisation which used cars built by his company. Brabham took his third championship title in 1966 and became the only driver to win the Formula One World Championship in a car that carried his own name. This three-time winner was the first driver to be knighted in motorsport and is the oldest surviving F1 Champion. A town has also been named after him in Australia.

A rare 1974 Hesketh 308 went under the hammer last month. It was the car Hesketh Racing built for James Hunt to compete in the 1974 Formula One season. The winning bidder was Radio 2 DJ and car lover Chris Evans who bought the car for €280.000. In 2010 Chris Evans made history when he bought the most expensive car ever sold in Britain, paying £12 million for a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO. The first thing the DJ did was to ask James Hunt's son, Freddie, if he would like to drive the car. Freddie said “After many years of wanting to drive one of Dad's cars with enough time to get the tyres warm and get to know the car it finally looks like it might happen! I'm a very happy man.”

Up for auction in August is a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 owned by Steve McQueen. He bought the car while on the set of 'Bullitt' and had it resprayed from silver to red. He sold it in 1971 and it was subsequently transformed from a coupe into a convertible. The current owner, a former Le Mans winner, Vern Schuppan, spent a six-figure sum with Ferrari's Classiche department returning the car to look the same as it did when Steve McQueen owned it. The retired racer is now selling the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 and it is expected to set a multi-million pound world record price.

Ride 13: 14th Broken Bones Run Our 'Band of Brothers' (yes OK and sisters!), gathered at El Realengo as arranged and set off along the AP7/A7 before taking the exit for Aspe on the CV84. At Novelda we joined the A31 (Petrer, Sax, Villena etc). Normally, this stretch of Autovia is pretty relaxing with good views of the castles along the way. Today however, everyone and their dog was using it to get back to Madrid as fast as possible after the long weekend or "puente"! We stopped at the services just next to the exit for the N344 for a leg stretch and a moan about the heavy traffic etc. Someone mentioned possibly getting some petrol? But seeing as they were too tight fisted ('tocano'!) to fill up before we started, Rob wouldn't let him!! lol! Chastened and chastised, we followed the N344 towards La Font de la Figuera then took the CV660/CV657 to Fontanars del Alforins. From there it was the CV655, through countryside reminiscent of the south of France to a welcome rest stop at the car park at the juction with the CV81. Now, yes it is a car park! But it has to be one of the most beautiful settings for a car park?! It's certainly up there with the cliff top car park on the Isle of Skye that has panoramic views of Kilt Rock and the Western Isles! (writer's name drop number 426!! Lol!). The CV81 sweeps and winds its way through scenery resembling the Chedder Gorge, before spitting out the traveller onto a long, undulating straight that leads to the medieval town of Bocairant. After a brief refuelling stop we took the CV795 through Banyeres de Mariola. About 8 Kilometers out of town, the CV803 to Onil and then the CV799 to Biar and Villena is a biker's paradise! It's not TOO well known to be ruined yet, but keep your eyes peeled for Power Ranger lookalike/wannabe Valentino Rossis! The CV813 out of Villena is another gem of a road too: chasing the vanishing point into a sweeping left hander then a sudden switch to the right needs a push on the bars and off the throttle slightly, then hard on the gas again as we follow the road romping off into the distance! Excellent Just be careful towards the end as when you cross into Murcia the drop in Maintenance/budget means the surface takes a nose dive into 'oops!' territory!
Marc Marquez was on form once again in his home country, taking his fourth consecutive win in front of a crowd of 115,000. He won by a comfortable margin ahead of Valentino Rossi with Dani Pedrosa taking third place. Jorge Lorenzo finished fourth at his 200th GP. It was also his birthday.

Marc Marquez had a terrible first lap dropping down to tenth, while Valentino Rossi took the lead. True to form, Marquez began making his way up, gradually overtaking everyone and eventually catching up with Rossi. Rossi hung on for a couple of laps fending off the Honda rider right behind him, but couldn't stop the Spaniard. Marquez took his fifth consecutive win, with Rossi second and Ă lvaro Bautista third. The reigning champions perfect start to the season now leaves him with 125 points, 42 ahead of nearest rival Dani Pedrosa, with Rossi two points behind him.
